I know Howie linked to this letter last weekend, but as we approach election day and try to assess the effect that the netroots have had on this cycle, I think it brings up several very important points to keep in mind. The letter comes from Tom Mathieson, the campaign manager for Carol Voison, the Democrat running in OR-02. And if it doesn't bring a tear to your eye, well you're made of tougher stuff than us:
Hi Howie –
I'm Carol Voisin's campaign manager, and as we get to the end of the campaign I wanted to thank you again for all that you and the Hadenough/BlueAmerica team have done for us and the other candidates. As you and Rick Brown wrote in the Voisin DownWithTyranny writeup, this is one of those campaigns that has such structural disadvantages (Dems lose by 45%+), that it typically never gets off the ground, with a downward spiral of no belief and no money. This year has been different because Carol is a great candidate and she came together with some highly motivated volunteers, several of us from the netroots. Our weakness was also a strength, as the lack of professionals and insiders has allowed us all to keep the campaign in line with our ideals – we've made things up as we went along while running an honest and positive campaign that has shined a big spotlight on Greg Walden's record.
Without Hadenough we wouldn't be running any commercials. As soon as we saw it on fdl we put it on Carol’s website (with Walden's numbers next to an explanation about how Coleen Rowley was running against rubberstamper John Kline). Just asking you all if it could get adapted for us seemed like a big deal, yet the answer was always yes, all the interactions were always easy and fast, and soon we were running our own 60 second spot in our only two "metro" areas of Medford and Bend. Since we didn't have much money the ads, played sparsely, were sort of symbolic, but most everything about this campaign has been sort of symbolic, and it felt good.
And then a couple of days ago the Democratic Party of Oregon sprung $10,000 for us to run the ad the last week of the campaign. This is enough so that it will really get seen, and really will bring in some votes. The fact that the DPO wanted to spend money on these ads when the Oregon House is in play signifies that they know that it is helping both Carol and all the down ballot races. People see it and they immediately understand and remember the song and the images, and it pushes them across the action-inaction line. I know I'll never get it out of my head. Our grateful thanks to everyone who gave their time and talent to make this happen, and all the FDL and C&L and other people who make Blue America possible…
Spurred on by having Hadenough, we made our own 30-second tv ad based on Hadenough, and also just put out a radio spot directly targeting the Second District's large yet often neglected Hispanic community. We’re heading for the finish line, and we’ll be out there phoning and talking to people until the polls close on the 7th. We expect to do better than anyone ever has against Walden, and may be in the running for most improved district…
As you watch the results next Tuesday and you see OR-02 go up, note that no Dem has gotten 26% against Walden. Also note that while Carol raised just over $50,000 from people, Walden's bagmen have collected over $1,250,000. He has spent almost a million of it holding off Carol, and hasn't given more than a couple thousand of it back to the Republican party or his pal Pombo, so we're keeping that money out of play. And also note that without a blowout in the Second District, the Republican's will have a hard time reelecting Senator Smith in 2008. And everyone who still has Hadenough in their heads in 2008 will be a hard sell for them to ever get back. We've all done some good work, together.
I'm enclosing part of Carol's last newsletter with the story of her leading a group singalong of Hadenough in Bend.
Thanks again for all. Happy trails!
Tom Mathieson
In addition to making everyone who has supported Blue America feel really good about their efforts, it highlights the fact that there is tremendous value in supporting candidates like Voisin running in a district that statistically will always go to the GOP. With $50,000 in cash, she managed to tie up $1,250,000 in Republican money that might have gone to Pombo. That's a race that McNerney stands a very good chance of winning. The "Had Enough" video gave a shot in the arm to people who are running on hope, who have had precious little support from institutional Democrats. And there is down ticket value in running the ad, as recognized by the Democratic Party's $10,000 contribution expressly for that purpose.
The left owns popular culture. The Powertools can wax lyrical over Hattie Carol all they want, but Bob Dylan is never going to show up and sing it on behalf of Tom Coburn. It's something we should be looking to more in order to cut through the media glue that prevents candidates in smaller and more unlikely races from being able to gain a foothold in their districts.
As a sidenote — although it's not possible to point to exact figures, the GOP had to be hurt this election by the inability to funnel all that dirty DeLay/Abramoff money into House races. And if you think about the fact that the $2.3 million that we shook down 2008 candidates for was a big deal to the DCCC, think about how much the $20 million in GOP money we tied up in the Lieberman race was worth. There is a $40,000 personal cap on giving to federal candidates by any individual, and the Republicans were forced to spend boatloads on Lieberman, money they could not contribute to their troubled House races. (I had to laugh when the Red State guys said that as long as the Republican party itself was not giving money directly to Lieberman they did not care — wingnuts consistently just do not seem to understand how the system works.)
Thanks to Tom for writing the letter and reminding us all of the global, long term and strategic value of what we're trying to do. It may not be instantly apparent or quantifiable, but it is tactically important to promoting progressive values in this country nonetheless.

Latest SUSA poll.. McCaskill up by 9 in MO.
Thanks Jane and Christy and all the other FDL battalion for all your help this cycle and especially for all the work on the Lamont campaign. Hope to see you out and about in DC tomorrow celebrating …

Great post, Jane.

Jack Cafferty just apologised for calling Rummy a war criminal. He said he stepped over the line when he said that. I think we all need to help drag that line a ways so that the next time he says it the editors can’t bitch.
As with many here, I have put more money, time, work, and heart into this election cycle than any in my life. This is my last stand for democracy in America. I am so grateful for the infrastructure FDL, Kos, et al have made possible. I’m excited. I think we take both houses tomorrow. knock wood.
Just a thought: Do you think Arnold Schwarzenegger’s name will fit on the ballot?

Gas prices are at their lows in time for the elections. I saw it reported that gas prices hit a new low today. While this may be true, the reality is that prices have been nearly flat for the last 2-3 weeks. If you believe that gasoline prices are not manipulated, you will see this as serendipity and part of a seasonal variation. If you believe that they are, you will see this as an intervention in the political process. My opinion is that the gasoline market is always manipulated, within larger seasonal and economic cycles.
In the oil markets, prices are low but are firming up a little. Reasons given are attacks in Nigeria and the possibility of further OPEC production cuts. This is needless to say BS, but it does show that oil markets and oil producers are struggling to come up with a rationale that will sustain oil prices with a $58-$60/bbl floor.
Steve @ 9
Something is not right with these polls, there was another SUSA poll that had Webb up by a huge amount. I think these are a trap to discourage Democratic turnout in Virginia and Missouri.
Consider the source. And who is behind this poll?
SUSA…something is missing :)
My concern now is not so much with what happens tomorrow, for I truly think, for perhaps for the first time in many years, that right will triumph over we know what. But if it should turn out that we have disappointments, for whatever reasons, the battle must continue. Regardless of the outcome on Tuesday. We have to look to the ‘new dawn’ and not cease to do the right thing. And in this endeavor I will never give up. Not tonight. Not tomorrow. Or all ‘the day afters’. It looks good. And our candidates will slay the dragons. We WILL have much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving Day. 2008; here we come! Please make sure that everybody and anybody who might be simpatico with ‘the cause’ has a way to get to the polls tomorrow.
Jane, thank you for an excellent post. Thank you for this site too. I was pretty depressed after Katrina. If it hadn’t been for you and Christy, it would have been much worse. Living without hope is not conducive to good health. You certainly provided the hope in the form of good information, squint-eyed attitude, courage and really excellent ideas…yours and any others you could point us to.
I haven’t been able to blog too often for a couple of days now. What shows is everyone watching for election news manana? What time does Christy do CNN? TIA

Most network coverage doesn’t really get going until 7:00.
I’ve got one TV on msnbc and the other on CNN in honor of our blog hosts. Probably there won’t be very much until 6:00 when some polls close in Kentucky and Indiana. I’ve got some bellwether races in those states if people are interested.
Also I would like to hear what resources people have available for tomorrow. Was thinking non-food, but heck why not. All resources.
Here at chez egregious:
popcorn, recipes suggested by fdl
my bottle of wine for the 15th House seat

bellwether races by chuck todd, howie klein, and bob berenson
poll closing times by the half hour, state by state

Speaking of popcorn recipes,
In Cayman Brac the hostess at the bar was using one of those old oil-in-the bottom spinning-wire-thingy poppers.
I was chowing the popcorn she made; it had a real spicy red pepper taste and was quite addicting.
Turns out she added about a tablespoon of Tabasco to the oil as it heated.

Somehow I just don’t see us sinking to their level… which is why Greg Palast may be right. (Lord knows, I hope not.)
Perhaps this is a harbinger.

Oklahoma kiddo and bdu: It’s looking SO good! I’ve got a staffer from the Brown campaign camping at my house these last few days, and they are thinking it just might happen. It’s all about GOTV. In fact, tomorrow I’ll be driving people to the polls who need rides.
As far as absentee, I was going to vote that way until I saw that the absentee ballots in this county are counted by the exact hackable optical scanner model as the HBO program showed and the polling place models are newer, so I’ll be voting at 7 in the morning.
Actually, I’m thinking since Doolittle has never had a serious challenge he may not have had time to put into place any truly horrific vote suppression activities.

That’s not an election, that’s a circuit party!
This letter is priceless in terms of showing the interconnectedness of what we’re doing.
Top tier races with great candidates can pull folks into the polls to support down-ticket candidates.
Forcing the Republicans on the defensive in one area keeps them from pumping money into others.
And a great theme song is not just fluff – it’s what gets the troops pumped up and makes the case for the candidate stick!
And for Marion, speaking of Tom Lehrer:
We are the folk song army,
Every one of us cares
We all hate poverty, war, and injustice,
Unlike the rest of you squares. . . .

Evidently LiberYouth will outside polling areas in sandwhich signs pointing to Libershits’ position on the ballot as people walk in. (I know, I couldn’t stop laughing myself.)
Since Libershit will be there, Ned has to be.
So basically you have a slapstick comedy schtick with the sandwhich boards on one side, and Vote for Change on the other.
Also, there are many undecided people as of tonight. I found people were willing to say they were voting for Ned today, no one would admit to voting for Joe, some wouldn’t commit, and a quite a few undecideds.
Sandwhich boards. You can’t make this stuff up.

Olbermann next covering Republican Robo calling accurately as opposed to the rest of the TM.
JohnSwifty @ 116
HIMMEL! When I predicted 6 and 28 a couple weeks ago I thought I was the extreme outlier for the House. Now 3 and 25 sound positively conservative.
egregious money for these bets? how much are we in for? and is there a regular mail address I can send in my share if I lose
Eureka Springs, AR @ 119
I’ve got you already, fellow hillbilly :)
Will you help me calculate what watertiger’s numbers turn into? Like if we have 45 in the Senate now, and she says 100, that’s plus 55. And in the house…
KEITH IS TALKING ABOUT ILLEGAL ROBOCALLS!!!!
JohnSwifty @ 116
you are a pessimist.
egregious @ 29
Unlike everyone else, I went way long on the Rove indictment and still lost, so I’m gonna be real conservative here. Don’t pounce on me for being a stick in the mud, but I’ll go 19 and 4.
Racism is probably going to win in TN, and maybe in VA. The only ones that look to be in the bag at this moment are PA, RI, OH and MD.
I’d like to see 50 or 60 seats in the House (a real punch in the gut to Rove) and eight seats in the Senate (a real kick in the balls to same), but I just don’t think it’s in the cards. The robocalls, negative ads and polling place diversions are going to take their toll and I expect just as much threatening bullshit going on at the polling places by the `pugs as in 2004. And, in the last three elections, by hook or (mostly) by crook, the tight races have gone to the `pugs.
Still, the House will go to the Dems.
JohnSwifty @ 116
You’re a pessimist.
(We aim to please around here.)
[edit: we aim to please so much, we read each other’s minds from time to time.]
okay, I wasn’t around earlier, but does Loserman actually think before he speaks?
egregious @ 16
You’re sweet. I would think thousands, not millions, but have no idea.

I’m that person at the track betting on all of the long shots. ;-)

I know, but my heart was positively broken in 2004 and I have a good memory. I’ve only recently discovered this cloistered knook of sanity at FDL and so I’ve been dangling in the wind for the better part of two years with all my nerves exposed.
watertiger @ 128
You have to ask?
Keith is covering Robo-Calls now with Jonathan Alter.

He is soooo good…

Cheney will be so busy breaking tie votes he will have a heart attack
and then…

watertiger @ 130
I know, but…you’re betting on races that aren’t up for election this year.
Oh what the hell.
Watertiger, in for 55, 232
Mommybrain @ 82
Do you have a download of “Had Enough” burned onto a CD to play while you’re headed to the polls?
A bunch of people had predictions in that thread a couple weeks ago. I think mine was House 34 Senate 7. I’ll hold.
Props to KO for discussing the robocalls, and to Jake Tapper on ABC Nightly News for the robocall mention.
egregious @ 98
Watertiger must know that once you’ve plead guilty or been convicted of a crime, you eventually shuffle off to Club Fed and get replaced. Even if you’re Bob Ney.
punaise @ 120
I’m not betting but the ones most important to me:
Senate: Lamont
Wulsin, Laesch, Paccione, Rodriguez, Brown, McNerney
punaise @ 120
Can’t quibble with that. And most, if not all will make it!
The main thing for this voter is I want BOTH houses of Congress.
And let me not forget. Former judge and current Rep. Democrat Jari Askins for Lt. Governor of the great state of Oklahoma!
watertiger @ 128
There’s a word for it, actually:
Delusional lying piece of dung.
Oh. Sorry. That was 5 words, but the first is the one that I meant… unless it was the last four…
GSD @ 42
Thanks for the hearty laugh I just had. After three days of GOTV here in CT, I’m dead tired and needed that wonderful piece of snark.
daCascadian @ 137
Cheney will be so busy breaking tie votes he will have a heart attack
Is that with or without a post-election Lieberman ratfuck?
montag @ 126
I hope we’re both sour pessimists with more egg on our faces than Lorain on the day that great Quiche was invented. But, I know about the south; I know about racism and those currents run deep even when the folks think they can Ford the waters. I also am quite convinced that Diebold will play a hand. Even two or three basis points in the right places can swing the entire outlook from ‘landslide’ to general victory with no frills. That will be Karl’s turdblossom in this election, because there really is no reason it shouldn’t be a route–there I go thinking like a sane person again.
JohnSwifty @ 133
Know what’s scary? I know EXACTLY what you mean.

In ten and a half hours, I get to go vote. I can’t wait. I’m getting there when the damned place opens.
Ok we’ve got John Swifty, montag, Prairie Sunshine, and deCascadian who is going to Make Me Calculate. Hm. deC, am I on target if I have you down for 5 and 24? That is to say, Senate goes from 45 to 50 and House goes from 203 to 227?
Here is where you all can jump on me if I have calculated wrong about the current number of House seats….Need a moment to go check the data. Or you could show me some mercy and jump in with the current number :)
House has 435 seats right? So we need 218 right? and to get there we need 15 I’m pretty sure. So that means we currently have 203 right? Help me out here.
dab from CT @ 145
I think both of the fine Reps mentioned in this post are on their way out, dab.
Marion in Savannah @ 144
You need to try it in German, where they have a delightful habit of stringing what would be separate words in English into a single German word. This isn’t exactly part of my general German vocabulary, but try this: Wahnhaftesliegenscheissestück
Fahrender, if you want to chime in from Dresden to confirm or correct, that would be much appreciated!
dab from CT @ 145
Dab, I can’t be in Connecticut, but I’ve supported Ned since before he got 33% of the votes in the Democratic um…caucus? Anyway, all my best hopes, and thank you for working so hard for such a great candidate!
I still like Sonntagnachmittagspaziergang.

Still hoping some kind soul will take pity on me and provide a reference to the fdl post apparently 2 weeks ago that had a lot of predictions in it. Otherwise….lost on twisty winding paths….
Oh. My. God.
I’ll bet KO’s Special Comment is going to be about Dim Son saying that, gosh, the war is now about oil… I’m about to faint…
Which will give me enough sleep so that Mr. Marion in Savannah and I can wake up the little old ladies at the polling place at 7 AM and be the first kids in line, which will get me to work by 7:30.

Keith now interviewing Dean about the 50 state strategy. Pelosi calls for plus 22.
Dean is talking about the illegal robocalls.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 143
Kiddo, How do you like the anti-Askin ads, like the one that says “when asked about gay marriage, Jari askins said she was ‘tolerant’. Jari Askins, too liberal for Oklahoma!”
So apparently conservatives have to be intolerant. And you thought it was a choice!

Peterr @ 154
You’re on to it. For example the German technical word for A-bomb is: Eingrossesboomenklapperalleskaput
Howard Dean just called out the Republicans on Keith! Nice!
Yes. I agree overwhelmingly with this post. Make them fight in every district in every state in every election.
My friend David Gereighty has mounted a pretty decent grass roots campaign with little funds. He has had radio, tv and robo calls (not the bad ones that call 8 times)! Putting the district in play and making them spend their money in their district not on their buddies really helps.
Good candidates in every race. The people deserve a choice of candidates not the default republicrook because no one else bothered to show up. Period.
Great job Netroots! So very inspiring.
cleter @ 151
cleter, I’m working the polls tomorrow…and ours open at 6:30. I hope we have a high turnout here. The Times Picayune is predicting a low turnout, but everyone *I’ve* talked to has either voted early or is intending to go vote. They’re also predicting rain for tomorrow.
Lindy @ 148
But you know what else; I’m finding more and more people who know EXACTLY what we mean. When I was a lad, watching my Vikings lose because Preston Pearson pushed off and caught a Roger Staubach pass to take the Cowboys along on a superbowl bid and leave the Vikings in the dust, everyone called ‘FOUL.’ That event has gone down in the vernacular of NFL wise guys as a ‘known fix’. When asked about it, Bud Grant said something to the effect, “It doesn’t matter, we should have never let them be that close.”
That’s what I take into the future. Even if this progressive momentum does not register as a landslide on the current richter; there’s a big one building and the message is, “We can’t even let ‘em make it close!”
punaise @ 159

RE Lieberman and NARAL
To add insult to insult, the NARAL blog is apparently censoring any comments that point out the illogic of their Lieberman endorsement. I had posted a comment here about an hour ago. It appeared on the website when I posted it and was still there about 45 minutes later, but it has now completely disappeared. This censorship probably explains why pretty much all of their posts have zero comments. I was able to retrieve the exact text of my comment by hitting the back button on my browser. It was:

Lindy – thanks. Those of us on the ground have the spirit of FDLers with us.
The event in Danbury was bitter sweet. Ned was teary. His kids were overwhelmed. Annie, I think, is relieved. I mean, who wants to watch their husband treated like crap by the likes of Liebercreep?
The poll showing 44% to 48% was a relief – that’s what it feels like on the ground but when you’re that close you can’t tell. Of course the Q-poll was a bummer, but was expected. But this time around everyone just said – bull shit. I trust the unaffiliated P-Poll over the other biased polls around.
I must say, it’s hard to hear all the Liebercreep gloating going on. Will make victory that much sweeter.
Tomorrow will be interesting – face to face with the Lieberbots (they haven’t shown their faces at any events since they appeared on the cover of the New York Times last week) – taking a camera is a great idea – thanks UptownNYchick.

MIAMI (AP) — Former state Representative Ralph Arza is out on bail after surrendering to authorities on charges of witness tampering and retaliation.
The Hialeah Republican turned himself into authorities yesterday and was released a short time later on ten-thousand dollars bail. His arrest came following an obscenity-lcaed phone message he left with a fellow lawmaker.

A question for people who’ve seen him before –
I’ve never watched Scarborough. Is anyone else as mesmerized by his BIG head and teeny, tiny features? How does he manage to feed himself through that tiny little mouth?

Scarborough has a lot to answer for, yet as self-reflective people, don’t we all? But you know, he is an evolving human being which should be an inspiration for a lot of other people on TV.
I would like his physical features to be not the issue. We have a lot of fellow bloggers with physical disabilities and deformities. Let’s look an inner beauty.
I will give him the benefit of the doubt, as we wait on the other side of the Looking Glass for people to come thru once they GET IT. Let us show mercy for them. People make mistakes. It is painful to admit one has made a mistake as I am newly aware.

That’s where the real accent comes from. The Coen Brothers are actually from a little town down the street called St. Louis Park. Around here we all talk like newscasters, so it’s comforting when I travel to just flip on the local broadcast for a taste of home.
Another famous St. Louis Park Alum is Al Franken. And I have this personal fantasy that the Coen’s will come back into town to direct Al’s commercial slots as he rolls over that PMP, Norm Coleman, in 2008.

It’s interesting that Pat Buchanan is on Da Tube now. I very MUCH enjoyed reading this in his magazine, American Conservative:
http://www.amconmag.com/2006/2…..ature.html
It was just the end of his bus trip around CT – and the end of a bruising campaign.
He began by talking about what a nice life he had been living 1 year ago – wonderful family, great business, etc. Then, why he took on this quest. He got teary when he was talking about the special people who have supported him along the way.
It was just a very genuine, emotionally connected moment between Ned and those who have fought along side him (including many on this blog). Damn he is a decent, special man.
BTW – of course CT Bob, Matt Stoller, CTKeith and I’m sure other bloggers were there.
It was an intense scene.

Thanks Jane. And everyone else….
Another interesting thing about the Voisin story is that it wouldn’t have happened with out the seeds you all planted with the roots project, which is where Old Gardener, Rat Bastahd, and I met and vowed to crash the gate. Fate being what it is, my wife bumped into Carol while shopping and told her I had just come back from Ykos and had some ideas. Carol found me in the checkout line, and after some talking she asked me to be her “netroots advisor”. Soon Carol was reading fdl and mydd and froomkin.. oh brave new world… It was obvious we were plugged into a new and better source of information and way of doing things, and in September she asked me to run the campaign. The rest of the excellent staff have all gotten plugged in to the netroots, and so have lots of the people we’re working with throughout Oregon. Its been a wild ride… Thanks again to you all!
Tom Mathieson @ 242
Wow. This is a medium has been such a force to be reckoned with this election cycle. Thank you, Mr. Mathieson and thank Carol Voisin for us net-rooters.
Sleep well Firedogs. Pray to St Anthony that we find a Democratic majority tomorrow!
It’s about time someone challenged the GOP in my town. We haven’t had a democratic congressman since the 70’s. One right after another there has been a long line of crooks dumping on the people of Southern Oregon. I think it’s time for new blood…..

Please get together and make sure you/we all scream to the heavens that it was Clinton, Schumer, Rahm, K Street or the DLC that did this. They are already stealing credit for everything. They will be believed, this victory will become their victory, and they will dump us in the alley with Lamont’s body. Somebody has to lead the charge to make sure they don’t end up with the credit.
