You beat me to it. Of course she knew. She just didn’t want to lose all the stuff.

The wife was classic beard material: Looked okay enough not to embarrass him in public (made him seem somewhat manly for securing a not-dog, or perhaps not totally a dog), and she wasn’t psychologically secure enough to think she could get a het guy with looks, smarts, charisma, and etc. I wouldn’t have found him attractive, but I can understand how some women (and men) could.
