(Secret photo taken of citizen intelligence analyst hard at work.)
Digby sums up the idiocy:
It looks like the ole perfesser and his pals didn't realize that the Army of Davids might include a few soldiers of jihad. Ooopsie!
It's a good thing the government is launching an investigation to find the dastardly bastards who leaked that Pentagon chart that realistically assessed the conditions in Iraq the other day. That puts America at risk. "Shining a spotlight" on nuclear bombmaking plans (conveniently written in arabic)by putting them all over the internet, on the other hand, is a terrific idea. That's what the Republicans are all about — "a transparent process rather than one mired in secrecy."
You can sure see why these guys have such a reputation for being good on national security, can't you?
Oh yeah. Yee haw. For the love of all that is holy, vote for Democrats.

worst president ever………..
It’s always about politics and instant gratification and to hell with what is best for the American people. Had Enough?
FITZ! HELP!!
You know how Tony Snow will spin it.
He will blame the press for drawing attention to this information. Now Al Qada will know where to look, thanks to the librul press. Do you guys want us to win or not?
I don’t know why, but the photo in combination with the post title keeps making me giggle. *g* I think I need more coffee…

We’re All Prisoners, Now: US Citizens to be Required ”Clearance” to Leave USA
October 26, 2006
Forget no-fly lists. If Uncle Sam gets its way, beginning on Jan. 14,
2007, we’ll all be on no-fly lists, unless the government gives us
permission to leave-or re-enter-the United States.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (HSA) has proposed that all
airlines, cruise lines-even fishing boats-be required to obtain
clearance for each passenger they propose taking into or out of the
United States.
It doesn’t matter if you have a U.S. Passport – a “travel document”
that now, absent a court order to the contrary, gives you a virtually
unqualified right to enter or leave the United States, any time you
want. When the DHS system comes into effect next January, if the
agency says “no” to a clearance request, or doesn’t answer the
request at all, you won’t be permitted to enter-or leave-the United
States.
Consider what might happen if you’re a U.S. passport holder on
assignment in a country like Saudi Arabia. Your visa is about to
expire, so you board your flight back to the United States. But wait!
You can’t get on, because you don’t have permission from the HSA.
Saudi immigration officials are on hand to escort you to a squalid
detention center, where you and others who are now effectively
“stateless persons” are detained, potentially indefinitely, until
their immigration status is sorted out.
Why might the HSA deny you permission to leave-or enter-the United
States? No one knows, because the entire clearance procedure would be
an administrative determination made secretly, with no right of
appeal. Naturally, the decision would be made without a warrant,
without probable cause and without even any particular degree of
suspicion. Basically, if the HSA decides it doesn’t like you, you’re
a prisoner – either outside, or inside, the United States, whether or
not you hold a U.S. passport.
The U.S. Supreme Court has long recognized there is a constitutional
right to travel internationally. Indeed, it has declared that the
right to travel is “a virtually unconditional personal right.” The
United States has also signed treaties guaranteeing “freedom of
travel.” So if these regulations do go into effect, you can expect a
lengthy court battle, both nationally and internationally.
Think this can’t happen? Think again. It’s ALREADY happening. Earlier
this year, HSA forbade airlines from transporting an 18-year-old a
native-born U.S. citizen, back to the United States. The prohibition
lasted nearly six months until it was finally lifted a few weeks ago.
Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union are two countries in recent history
that didn’t allow their citizens to travel abroad without permission.
If these regulations go into effect, you can add the United States to
this list.
For more information on this proposed regulation, see http://hasbrouck.org/IDP/IDP-APIS-comments.pdf.

This weekend will be the real test of the relevance of network news going forward. Will they be Republican Infomercial Networks all?
Or will they step away from the cliff of shilldom and spin enhancing and come back to fact-base reporting.
Let’s see if I’ve got this right:
Sifting through sensitive intelligence data should be done with transparency, in public; sifting through the formation of US energy policy should be shrouded in secrecy.
For the love of all that’s holy, indeed!
Question:
What do we do Wed morning after the Rethuglicans have — through vote fraud and Diebold electronic stealing — “won” another election?
What the hell do we do?
In Ukraine people took to the streets. They shut.the.government.down. We need to do the same here. The vote fraud there got more attention from the US media than the fraud in Ohio in ‘04.

Hi medaka. Good to see you.
Am I the only one who finds the article claiming that Iran test-fired some missiles to be a little fishy, or maybe just too convenient?
http://www.yahoo.com/s/428979
Or if it *is* true, to me it reflects more on the prez’s swell idea to war-game just off Iran. I mean, why would anyone think that parking half our navy within spitting distance of Iran might cause any trouble?
Stupid prez doesn’t like the war he’s got, so now he’s lookin’ for a new one.
Can we please get some grownups in charge in DeeCee? Please? Paging Grandma Pelosi and her scary committee chairmen! I mean, are Conyers and Waxman really scarier — and riskier — than Roberts and Hoekstra?
Our nation is in great peril. The GOP is a clear and present danger. Change is required — now.
Egad, I hope that guy’s wearing pants!
I just contacted my district candidate. They are shocked and see this as a way to get press attention going into the weekend. Contact your campaigns, as they may be too busy campaigning to have read the news.

You don’t wanna know.
Maybe if the White House insists that John Kerry apologize for this, we’ll see wall-to-wall media coverage.
Did anyone see the HBO special last night about electronic voting?? It was compelling. It basically gives pretty decent evidence that the 2000, and 2004 elections were stolen and definetly left me, like the woman at the end of the program, in tears, wondering if we haven’t lost our democracy already. This said, please do not tell me that we are not to talk about this for fear of causing apathy. If anything it makes me want to show up and follow the trail, more than ever. Voting in large numbers is one way to solve the problem. But I am so curious as to why none of the sites, that usually respond to issues of concern will even discuss the issue. This is the foundation of our democracy. This is not paranoia, there is evidence, and there has been way too much evidence withheld. My greatest fear is that bush et al smirk because they have no intention of allowing democrats to win, and according to this documentary, these machines can be hacked and leave no foot prints.
They actually did a demo on the show to show how it works. It took just a few minutes for the programmer to do and made the tape come out with a totally different count. This virus then spreads from one machine to the next as they “talk” to one another. There was no evidence left in the coding. However, let it be known Diebold will not allow anyone to see the programming code. Also they knew that this was a problem way back in 2000 and hid it. Our government has known since 2000 as well, and they had evidence to show this.
The show made me cry. Is it denial, are we just too afraid to allow the thought?? I think if we don’t face the truth about this issue chaos will ensue after the elections and guess what??? Bush will put martial law in place. I kid you not, it concerns me deeply that we might want to have a plan in case this is what happens. Denial does nothing to solve problems.

Source for that Maliki thing would be…
“Just when it seemed that the situation in Iraq couldn’t get any murkier, more muddled or more dangerous, it did. Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, our “friend” or our client, if you will, has openly declared his independence from us and his dependence on his most important domestic supporter, the anti-American Shiite Muslim cleric Moqtada al-Sadr and his Mahdi Army militia. Maliki, it’s becoming clear, is as big a part of the problem in Iraq as al-Sadr and his gang of thugs and murderers. But President Bush is, well, staying the course with Maliki with all the obstinacy that he’s displayed throughout his sojourn in Iraq.”

OT – CNN – another combat operation in anbar province – more marines killed. 11 troops killed in November so far.
Was EPU’ed so will repost my comment here.
While this is a glaring and needlessly self-inflicted intelligence failure, it is important to realize that nuclear weapons are not something you can throw together in your garage so al Qaeda won’t benefit from these plans. The Iranians will certainly be interested in them to see if there is anything they can use in their own program. The North Koreans may have more difficulties with the language barrier but with their own recent failed test they too might like to see if the Iraqi data contains any insights applicable to their problems. The Pakistanis and Indians might pick over it for a few stray tidbits. Finally, more established nuclear powers might want to compare the Iraqi documents to their own intelligence assessments.
The Democratic candidate in ID-01, Larry Grant, is ahead in the polls for the first time.
As Christy says, don’t get all Eeyore on us now. We can win this, people. Be the wave!

Investigations led by a Republican lawyer named Stuart W. Bowen Jr. in Iraq have sent American occupation officials to jail on bribery and conspiracy charges, exposed disastrously poor construction work by well-connected companies like Halliburton and Parsons, and discovered that the military did not properly track hundreds of thousands of weapons it shipped to Iraqi security forces.

Mr. Bowen’s office has inspected and audited taxpayer-financed projects like this prison in Nasiriya, Iraq.
And tucked away in a huge military authorization bill that President Bush signed two weeks ago is what some of Mr. Bowen’s supporters believe is his reward for repeatedly embarrassing the administration: a pink slip.
The order comes in the form of an obscure provision that terminates his federal oversight agency, the Office of the Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction, on Oct. 1, 2007. The clause was inserted by the Republican side of the House Armed Services Committee over the objections of Democratic counterparts during a closed-door conference, and it has generated surprise and some outrage among lawmakers who say they had no idea it was in the final legislation.

That photo punched my inner child.
Andy Card’s presence should have come with a spew alert. His remarks boiled down to this:
Man beats wife.
Wife calls cops.
Cops come with sirens blaring.
Neighbors complain about the noise.
Man complains that if wife hadn’t called the cops, the noise never would have happened.
We’ve talked (speculated) on these threads before about how the WH must be viewed in the mid-level ranks of the intelligence community. How do you think they’re reacting today? It’s got to be one of their worst nightmares: we warned you, and you didn’t listen, and now we’ve got to clean up the mess. Again.
If an intelligence analyst had posted this stuff on a public website, they’d have been hauled off fast and had their lives turned upside down and torn apart. But when the White House does it . . .
(crickets)
katie at 20 — there are a lot of sites that talk about voter fraud issues. The problem with it is that the computer issues involved are a bit complex — and it takes some expertise to speak about it with any authenticity on that level. That said, there are a LOT of groups monitoring election issues this year, I get information from a number of them pretty frequently, and there are a number of things set in place to keep an eye on the vote. The fact that corporate media outlets have started talking about the issue and will continue to do so into the election is very promising. And the HBO special really helps to push the questions that need to be asked into the forefront.
On my end of things, though, what I’ve chosen to do with my expertise is to try and push our vote out at a high level. My computer skills are minimal, at best, and talking tech issues on this on my part would be irresponsible. Plus, in all honesty, every time the issue comes up, everyone turns into an Eeyore and we devolve into a “well, why vote if it isn’t going to count anyway” discussion, which is counterproductive. There are a LOT of people working the tech angle, a lot more working the legal angle, and I’ve chosen to work the GOTV angle. I missed the special due to the WVU game last night, but I’m going to catch it via TIVO at some point over the weekend, I hope.

Got it – thanks!
Christy: these electronic vote stealing machines are not all that complex or hard to understand.
Think of it as the excellent attorney you are. In EVERY state there are recount provisions which presume that each vote can be re-counted.
These computer machines do not allow that. There is no paper trail. All you can do is ask the computer, “what number did you say the other night?”
We need to talk NOW about what the hell we’re going to do WHYEN not it WHEN they steal another one. What measures are being put in place? Is there any independent exit polling that will be revealed?
The MSM”s “exit polling” will now be “smoothed” to match so-called “actual results” so it will be worthless.
Also, everyone needs to be urged to take small digital video cameras INTO THE POLLING PLACE

This might be one of the first things that the new Congress, (should all the stars be in alignment) should look into: Exactly how the DHS works (or doesn’t) and make an effort to focus their efforts on actual, you know, SECURITY. If that’s not possibe, shut the fucker down.
Oh, and they do need to rewrite the rules governing those lists. They are waaaay to much in the mode of the worst of Totalitarian states. I suspect that enough Dem congressfolks have been stopped as “terrorists” (Ted Kennedy was stopped early on) at airports to give them some impetus to get this done, and done right.
Leaking Atom Bomb plans on the net Arhh! I still can’t believe they did this, isn’t leaking classifed information against the law isn’t this treason? Just because Congress decides to approve war crimes like torture for example does not make it right, legal or ANY LESS STUPID! Just because the President does it does not make it OK.The logical reason we have laws are to protect…OURSELVES! The reason we give up some of our indivudual freedoms to governments is because we think that the safety of a group is worth it. Right now the social contract has been violated worst than an all boys school after a Mark Foley, Rush Limbaugh viagra binge in the Dominican Republic. (Rush never did explain why he needed to go to the DR with Viagra so I’m speculating) Condi are we going to wait for proof thats a mushroom cloud over an American City that bush gave terroists an Atom Bomb or do we impeach the chimp for being to stupid to live!
Accidentally cut myself off:
EVERYONE needs to take small digital cameras into the polling place with them. Carefully watch the voting machine.
We need video of a machine swapping the votes. According to reports, it’s already happened. We need video of it, hard evidence, to prove what’s going on. Anything short of that will be said to be a “glitch” or error or some such nonsense.
Rodney King would have been a nothing if there was no video of it.

Episcopalians in the U.S. officially get a new head bishop tomorrow, and it’s a girl!
She was actually elected back in June, but this weekend is her investiture.
Of course, I know that most of us are really focussed on the election that is just a few days away, and maybe this doesn’t seem like that important an event if you’re not Episcopalian. But it is kind of a big deal. Not just because she is a woman “breaking the stained glass ceiling”, but because of her leadership style of reconciling, reaching out, listening…
We need more of that in our leaders, you know? Anyway, it’s a good thing
From EPU land, this refers to the prior post, which should be heavily SPOTLIGHTed.
Folks, this is likely to get picked up by the networks, but they may not do more homework, as Christy has done. So the best thing we can do is to SPOTLIGHT, SPOTLIGHT, SPOTLIGHT [Christy’s prior post]. We may be able to make this the number one topic for the weekend; we have time to affect Sunday editorials, which are being written today; and we can affect the Sunday talk-head questions and guests. This can be a major story through election day.
In addition to major national/regional papers, especially those in critical states of MO, TN, CT, VA, MT, etc, (or media in the region of your favority local candidate) we should just hit as many CNN hosts and MSNBC hosts, plus all network anchors as we can.
I also suggest we Spotlight to special categories like “military” and “pentagon” and “security” reporters, by using the “MORE” button on SPOTLIGHT. Also “White House” and “political” categories produce very good narrower lists of reporters. After that, try “panelist” which produces a good list of people who show up on talk show panels.
If we can capture the lead story with this, we can blow the Bush/Rove messages off the news. And don’t forget to mention, in your “comment,” the attached article by “respected blogger, Christy Hardin Smith, of firedoglake.” Encourage them to look here for helpful information and analysis.

That said, there are a LOT of groups monitoring election issues this year, I get information from a number of them pretty frequently, and there are a number of things set in place to keep an eye on the vote. The fact that corporate media outlets have started talking about the issue and will continue to do so into the election is very promising. .
christy, all I can say is I’m holding my breath
once the results are in it won’t matter what we discover, the courts will over turn any challenge we mount
we have to win this time, this is the very last chance for democracy and man oh man, I don’t see how we can overcome e voting
There are, of course, honest Republicans, but these days they tend to be few & far between and retired. I wonder if the real October surprise is to tie this election up in the courts so that the House gets to pick who it wants. By making it a non-political issue, they get some cover for their upcoming post election screech-fest.
Raw story has this up:

Only if they’re doing it at a university. (My russki is rusty, no can translate reliably, but it looks harmless to me.)

No, son las instrucciones para la sorpresa siguiente de noviembre. Nuestras Demcratas tenemos uno previsto para cada maana durante los cuatro das prximos.

And that exclusively favors Republicans how?
I guess you gotta count me among the cynics feeling like the Bushies are gonna steal continuing control on November 7th. All this fervent GOoper hand-wringing and campaigning is just so much window dressing. Necessary adjuncts, but…
I hope I’m wrong.

Couple of thoughts I haven’t seen expressed here yet:
1. Who put the camera in my office, and why did they wait until I had my glasses on to snap the picture?
2. I know a guy who’d be happy to explain what a royal screw up this is, and why he, as a combat veteran, wonders how in the world anyone could think that this was less of a security problem than leaking a report based on statistics that were for the most part publicly available anyway. Oh, wait, the cowards and idiots who run the Democratic party threw him over the side because he forgot to say a pronoun.
Our new gulag overlords are transmitting orders.
Lamontblog has quotes from the Lieberman/Imus interview. Crooks and Liars’ headline implies that Lieberman will caucus with Dems. That’s not what he said. Here’s the quote
“You gotta join one caucus or another to protect your seniority… but I’m going to be very independent… watch me…”
Geez, I lost a line there.
What I MEANT to say was that, since Prof remembered his Cyrillic, I guess all was not lost.
On the other hand….
my dream scenario if Lieberman does win… Dems take 7-9 seats and Lieberjerk becomes a caucus of one.
Go Ned! GET OUT OUR VOTE.

My favorite details in this photograph are the Rx drug bottles, the cigarette dangling from his fat lips, and his resemblence to damn near every pot-bellied old obese white good ole wing-nut boys about to be tossed from office. ;~D
Nice work insulting the 60% of Americans who are fat. Way to win friends and show solidarity with ordinary folks. Ya know?

The wife was classic beard material: Looked okay enough not to embarrass him in public (made him seem somewhat manly for securing a not-dog, or perhaps not totally a dog), and she wasn’t psychologically secure enough to think she could get a het guy with looks, smarts, charisma, and etc. I wouldn’t have found him attractive, but I can understand how some women (and men) could.
Isn’t almost clear Bush wants someone out there to get a nuke and use it on us?
They let A.Q.Khan go on for years.
They torpedo Valerie Plame Wilson.
They drop oversight on N. Korea.
They put nuke plans on the net.
Maybe Dubya sees himself as God’s little helper, preparing for the Apocalypse just a little too hard.
