Well I'm in NYC today for my CMJ panel with George Clinton and Gibby Hanes so I won't see your comments until Sunday, but please don't let that dampen the party. This week's podcast is to further inspire the troops for this Tuesdays election. What's your favorite stand up and fight anthems? These are some of mine.
I'd love to hear your comments in the comments section. PEACE and POWER TO THE PEOPLE!

I can’t listen to music at work, but I can rock to this:
One of the great entertainments to watch just before an upheaval election is list of candidates who want to make sure they lose their dignity ahead of losing their seat. Along those lines is Rep. Deborah Pryce, number four in the House leadership who’s just announced that “What’s happening in Iraq is not a direct reflection on me.” And you know it’s good because those were actually her prepared remarks her campaign sent CNN after the interview. During the live session, in the midst of answering, she wigged out and declared the interview over.

I’ve got a soul
That can not sleep
At night when something
Just ain’t right
Blood red
But without sight
Exploding egos
In the night
Mix like sticks
Of dynamite
Red black or white
This is my fight
Come on courage
Let’s be heard
Turn feelings
Into words
American equality
Has always been sour
An attitude
I would like to devour
My name is peace
This is my hour
Can I get
Just a little bit of power
[Chorus]
The power of equality
Is not yet what it ought to be
It fills me up like a hollow tree
The power of equality
Right or wrong
My song is strong
You don’t like it
Get along
Say what I want
Do what I can
Death to the message
Of the Ku Klux Klan
I don’t buy supremacy
Media chief
You menance me
The people you say
Cause all the crime
Wake up motherfucker
And smell the slime
Blackest anger
Whitest fear
Can you hear me
Am I clear
My name is peace
This is my hour
Can I get
Just a little bit of power
[Chorus]
I’ve got tapes
I’ve got c.d.’s
I’ve got my Public Enemy
My lilly white ass
Is tickled pink
When I listen to the music
That makes me think
Not another
Motherfuckin’ politician
Doin’ nothin’ but something
For his own ambition
Never touch
The sound we make
Soul sacred love
Vows that we take
To create straight
What is true
Yo he’s with me
And what I do
My name is peace
This is my hour
Can I get
Just a little bit of power
[Chorus]
Madder than a motherfucker
Lick my finger
Can’t forget
‘Cause the memory lingers
Count ‘em off quick
Little piccadilly sickness
Take me to the hick
Eat my thickness
I’ve got a welt
From the Bible belt
Dealing with the hand
That I’ve been dealt
Sitting in the grip
Of a killing fist
Giving up blood
Just to exist
Rub me wrong
And I get pissed
No I can not
Get to this
People in pain
I do not dig it
Change of brain
For Mr. Bigot
Little brother do you hear me
Have a heart oh come get near me
Misery is not my friend
But I’ll break before I bend
What I see is insanity
Whatever happened to humanity

Donita, I love MOST of your choices, but I still don’t like rap or hip-hop. Ok, I’ve given it a chance but it still grates on my nerves like nails on a chalkboard. Sorry, call me hopelessly uncool but I just can’t see any redeeming value in Public Enemy’s hit. That’s fine, right? I don’t have to buy it or listen to it. But could someone please tell me why this stuff is popular to begin with? If I was interested in bad, rhyming poetry, I’d read it. I can’t stand the lack of musicianship in rap. I don’t care if it is cultural or urban or requires a particular point of view. It just sounds like bad music to me. Couldn’t it be all of those things and sound good?
Ok, I’m sorry, it I’ve offended anyone. I just had to get that off my chest.

I’m always amused when I hear this kind of thing about music — even when I’ve said it myself. It amuses me because this exact sentiment has been expressed about every new musical style in known history (even classical, back when it was new!)
Those are good songs Donita. I still say “Idependent Worm Saloon” is one of the best record titles ever. I brought a video.

Stand up and fight anthems?
Rage Against the Machine. The entire catalogue. If you don’t want to go and take out some right-wing ass after listening to “Killing in the Name of…” stop breathing now. Michael Moore did a video for “Sleep Now in the Fire” that has to be seen to be believed. During the filming of it, Rage stormed the New York Stock Exchange, causing it to shut down for the day. Other bands have talked about being political. Rage really was. I miss them. I miss them so much (Zach–come back! We need you!).
The “new” incarnation of RATM, Audioslave, does great political things still (the successful Taco Bell protest!), but they’re not RATM.
System of a Down: Boom! Aside: Michael Moore did an incredible job with the video for this song, using news footage from around the world of people protesting the Iraq war in Feb. 2003 interspersed with footage of ordinary people and SOD speaking against the war during the protests. It was awesome. SOD is almost worthy enough to assume the mantle Rage discarded when they broke up.

Zappa
Well I’m about to get sick
From watchin’ my TV
Been checkin’ out the news
Until my eyeballs fail to see
I mean to say that every day
Is just another rotten mess
And when it’s gonna change, my friend
Is anybody’s guess
So I’m watchin’ and I’m waitin’
Hopin’ for the best
Even think I’ll go to prayin’
Every time I hear ‘em sayin’
That there’s no way to delay
That trouble comin’ every day
No way to delay
That trouble comin’ every day
Wednesday I watched the riot . . .
Seen the cops out on the street
Watched ‘em throwin’ rocks and stuff
And chokin’ in the heat
Listened to reports
About the whisky passin’ ’round
Seen the smoke and fire
And the market burnin’ down
Watched while everybody
On his street would take a turn
To stomp and smash and bash and crash
And slash and bust and burn
And I’m watchin’ and I’m waitin’
Hopin’ for the best
Even think I’ll go to prayin’
Every time I hear ‘em sayin’
That there’s no way to delay
That trouble comin’ every day
No way to delay
That trouble comin’ every day
Well, you can cool it,
You can heat it . . .
‘Cause, baby, I don’t need it . . .
Take your TV tube and eat it
‘N all that phony stuff on sports
‘N all the unconfirmed reports
You know I watched that rotten box
Until my head begin to hurt
From checkin’ out the way
The newsman say they get the dirt
Before the guys on channel so-and-so
And further they assert
That any show they’ll interrupt
To bring you news if it comes up
They say that if the place blows up
They will be the first to tell,
Because the boys they got downtown
Are workin’ hard and doin’ swell,
And if anybody gets the news
Before it hits the street,
They say that no one blabs it faster
Their coverage can’t be beat
And if another woman driver
Gets machine-gunned from her seat
They’ll send some joker with a brownie
And you’ll see it all complete
So I’m watchin’ and I’m waitin’
Hopin’ for the best
Even think I’ll go to prayin’
Every time I hear ‘em sayin’
That there’s no way to delay
That trouble comin’ every day
No way to delay
That trouble comin’ every day
Hey, you know something people?
I’m not black
But there’s a whole lots a times
I wish I could say I’m not white
Well, I seen the fires burnin’
And the local people turnin’
On the merchants and the shops
Who used to sell their brooms and mops
And every other household item
Watched the mob just turn and bite ‘em
And they say it served ‘em right
Because a few of them are white,
And it’s the same across the nation
Black and white discrimination
Yellin’ “You can’t understand me!”
‘N all that other jazz they hand me
In the papers and TV and
All that mass stupidity
That seems to grow more every day
Each time you hear some nitwit say
He wants to go and do you in
Because the color of your skin
Just don’t appeal to him
(No matter if it’s black or white)
Because he’s out for blood tonight

People Have the Power — Patti Smith
You know we gotta sit around at home
And watch this thing begin
But I bet there won’t be many left
To see it really end
‘Cause the fire in the street
Ain’t like the fire in my heart
And in the eyes of all these people
Don’t you know that this could start
On any street in any town
In any state if any clown
Decides that now’s the time to fight
For some ideal he thinks is right
And if a million more agree
There ain’t no great society
As it applies to you and me
Our country isn’t free
And the law refuses to see
If all that you can ever be
Is just a lousy janitor
Unless your uncle owns a store
You know that five in every four
Just one amount and nothin’ more
Don’t watch the rats go across the floor
And make up songs about being poor
Blow you harmonica son!

Artist: Ochs, Phil
Lyrics for Song: Power and Glory
Lyrics for Album: There But for Fortune
Come and take a walk with me thru this green and growing land
Walk thru the meadows and the mountains and the sand
Walk thru the valleys and the rivers and the plains
Walk thru the sun and walk thru the rain
Here is a land full of power and glory
Beauty that words cannot recall
Oh her power shall rest on the strength of her freedom
Her glory shall rest on us all (on us all)
From Colorado, Kansas, and the Carolinas too
Virginia and Alaska, from the old to the new
Texas and Ohio and the California shore
Tell me, who could ask for more?
Yet she’s only as rich as the poorest of her poor
Only as free as the padlocked prison door
Only as strong as our love for this land
Only as tall as we stand
(additional verse supplied by Sonny Oches)
But our land is still troubled by men who have to hate
They twist away our freedom & they twist away our fate
Fear is their weapon and treason is their cry
We can stop them if we try

Sometimes, the way to get into rap is to do it via a “normal” song that a rap band does. Did you like a recent pop hit called,”Hey Ya?’
Well, it’s done by a rap group, OutKast, from the album Speakerboxx/Love Down Below. Also on the album is a seductive song called, “The Way You Move.” It sounds like what would happen if you crossed Earth Wind and Fire with rap. There are raps speaking out against the war, rap about the usual rap stuff (partying and being badass)…and funny snippets in between tunes, like Andre praying to God…only to find out God is a WOMAN.
Try listening to a few selections from that album, and maybe you can move on to some of the “other” rap, like Deltron 3000 (extremely political rapper). It’s not all gangstas and bitches and hos in rap. A lot of them discuss very serious issues, and from a point of view most liberals would agree with.
Another avenue to help understand rap better is to dig into some blue-eyed rap, which is the rap of white guys, aka nu metal. Rage Against the Machine is without a doubt the best attempt of merging rock and rap. If you’re leery, this might be an incentive to give them a listen: They were the most political band ever to sign a contract in America. And they had one of the best guitarists any band has ever had. Check ‘em out!
“Sometimes, the way to get into rap is to do it via a “normal” song that a rap band does. Did you like a recent pop hit called,”Hey Ya?’”
Agree completely. Became not a convert but at least a tolerator with Quincy Jones ‘95 “Jook Joint” release. Bought it just for “Killer Joe” but came to appreciate a couple other rap-oriented other tunes.
I think Chuck D had the best rap delivery.

Chuck D’s got the power of the “preacher’s voice”, a style that’s hooked listeners since long before old white record label execs began making money by selling records to young black folks.
The only thing that bothers me about rap, is the boom-boxes sometimes associated with it. I don’t particularly like being forced to listen to other folks music, no matter the genre. And later in their lives many of these boom-boxers are going to pay quite a price in hearing loss.

OMG! That song’s incredible! It’s like Lawrence Welk meets rap. Gotta have it! Thanks!
I figure most of you were familiar with the other songs on my list, but this one is a bit more obscure, and undeservedly so:
I’m just and ageing drummer boy
And in the wars I used to play
And I’ve called the tune
To many a torture session
Now they say I am a war criminal
And I’m fading away
Father please hear my confession
I have legalised robbery
Called it a belief
I have run with the money
And hid like a thief
I have re-written history
With my armies and my crooks
Invented memories
I did burn all the books
And I can still hear his laughter
And I can still hear his song
The man’s too big
The man’s too strong
Well I have tried to be meek
And I have tried to be mild
But I spat like a woman
And sulked like a child
I have lived behind walls
That have made me alone
Striven for peace
Which I have never known
And I can still hear his laughter
And I can still hear his song
The man’s too big
The man’s too strong
Well the sun rose on the courtyard
And they all did hear him say
‘You always were a Judas
But I got you anyway
You may have got your silver
But I swear upon my life
Your sister gave me diamonds
And I gave them to your wife’
Oh father please help me
For I have done wrong
The man’s too big
The man’s too strong
Scarier now than it was back then, but it’s an affirmation that what we do lives on, and that there’s a lot more to the human will than many people who believe they’re strong think there is.

For me it started with the words. I am still not exactly ‘into’ rap, but I am getting there. By which I mean, it no longer sounds all the same to me ; ) My intro was via slam poetry when we hauled harpsichord for our favourite neo-cabaret orchestra. Our guys were the headliners, one of the opening acts was Vancouver-based The Fugitives. Amazing, amazing show, I couldn’t find my socks for a week. After that rap & hip-hop and such just sort of started making sense.

I’m a poet, and the thing that amazes me about rap is the use of rhythm/meter and internal phonetic rhyme patterns. They listen to the sound of language, and the use of meter and rhythm to mirror tone and the velocity of thought is what I appreciate. Most of the lyrics, eh.
