Day Two of the Big Bad Bus Tour isn't exactly off to a good start. This morning's first rally was to be outdoors at the Percival Smith Towers Senior Center. Before the event was even underway, a crowd of Lieberman supporters turned up. They have a fake voting booth set up in the bed of a Toyota 4×4 and speakers that play that insipid jingle, ("When you're in the voting booth/Watch out for the LieberYouth…") over and over and OVER. It looks like a porta-potty on wheels and the music coming out of it is akin to the smell one would expect from such an enclosure.
They started out at the street, holding signs and chanting, a clot of 25 to 30 thick-necked Young Republican types. Then they moved up the driveway to the Senior Center and blocked the bus. They formed a noisy, chanting mob around the bus door and blocked anyone from getting out. Eventually Ned and some others managed to push out through the crowd, but the noise only increased and the LieberYouth pressed tighter, chanting so that the news cameras and microphones couldn't pick up a word Ned was saying.
It was an ugly and intense little scene. The few seniors who had come outside were rushed back in by the Percival Smith staff. I did manage to ask one bright-eyed little senior lady what she thought of all this, but she just pointed at her temple and twirled her finger in the universal sign for "crazy" and then she was whisked away by a staffer.
So this is what it has come down to, Mr. Lieberman? Sending your thugs out to physically intimidate old people? Nice. Classy.
But, really, that's about what we've come to expect from Senator "I am The Cosmos", isn't it?
UPDATE: TRex reports he was just ejected from Lieberman's press conference by two construction workers acting on orders from the Lieberman campaign. So, it is apparently okay for them to crash our events but not the other way around.

Some of my best friends are civil disobedients; they know the relevant laws well.
Blocking egress or access to public vehicles (buses; licensed charters) can open the door to all sorts of nifty criminal charges. Doing so on publicly and/or Federally funded premises can bring in whole new jurisdictions (and some Draconian penalties).

Ned should have security at each and every event. The campaign should have cameras and video cameras at every event to film stuff like this – and then send it to all the local news outlets.
The Lamont campaign should be issuing a press release about this.
This is the kind of things that could trigger all the undecideds to vote for Lamont. CT doesn’t do nasty elections. I can’t think of a time where there has been the threat of physical violence – or blocking someone from campaigning.
Lieberliar has put up the facade of being a good guy and non-partisan when in fact he is nothing of the kind – and hires thugs to rough up his competition. I’m sure there will be another $387,000 hole in Joe’s general election budget to cover the cost of juvenile delinquents showing up at Lamont events.
This on top of Joe’s Imus schtick this morning – where he refused he would say who he would caucus with because it could cost him the election – could make all the difference in the world.
If the Lamont campaign doesn’t use this – all the phone calls and canvassing in the world won’t make a difference.

Joe has to be evasive to keep his Republican support. As the struggle for control of the Senate tightens, Joe is also signaling that the price for his support will be high and that he is willing to entertain offers from both sides. This should surprise no one. Lieberman has been known for years as a man who could backstab you from the front. What we need to remember is that this is something that Establishment Democrats like Hillary, Schumer, Big Dawg, Reid, and Biden as well as the liberal Boxer did to themselves by taking a pass on the Connecticut race and not being open and vocal in their support of Lamont.

Ned’s campaign has to go after these guys with multiple video cameras. First video (has to have good audio) gets in tight and asks these guys for their names. If they refuse, victory, Lamont. It only makes it more likely that they are paid thugs. If they do provide names (probably fake), victory Lamont, now you can confirm that they are thugs paid for by
KarlLieberman4Lieberman. Other questions, are you a CT resident? Who are you voting for Governor? Try to get them to implicate themselves as paid Republican agitators.Ned’s campaign also needs other video from distance, 20 or thirty yards away, in case they attack the video that is in close.
Local news will probably pick up the video of the faces of these guys, as well as whatever they say. It’s very newsworthy.

I am State Representative Evelyn Mantilla, of the district where Ned made his stop this morning. I helped organize a quick meet & greet with the residents outside the building so as to not disrupt their environment and routine inside and to respect the Hartford Housing authority who manages it. This building is a low income senior housing building. I have fought for these folks for 10 years and they know me well and expect from me truthful information and to be treated with respect. The Lamont advance folks and staff handled the situation well and Ned himself was more gracious than anyone should be expected to be. He still made sure he greeted those who came outside to see him.
The actions of the Lieberman “volunteers” created an environment of intimidation and frankly just downright disturbed the peace of the residents. The crowd created such a tight space that they blocked the entrance to the building and any resident who wanted to get through to Ned, or just leave the building, had to push their way through or put up with getting pushed around themselves.
I am appalled. If they felt they had to make an appearance, they can march with their signs and chant their message all they want… but this was crossing the line. The lack of respect for these folks was beyond anything I’ve ever seen. These are SENIORS… this was not a rally… it was a simple meet and greet. I can’t begin to describe the outrage I feel.
The good news is that I’ve spoken with a few already and they are clear as to who caused the disturbance. I will personally be out there making sure they come out to vote for Ned.

Instead of joining his two main opponents for the U.S. Senate – Democrat Ned Lamont and Republican Alan Schlesinger – at Quinnipiac University, Joe Lieberman opted for a relaxing night of campaigning, beer in hand, at Mayor Mike’s in downtown Hartford.
It was a short stop.
It was also not very relaxing.
Lieberman lasted maybe 15 minutes before he was heckled from the restaurant by young Lyndon LaRouche supporters, who kept popping up along the bar like gophers coming out of their holes.

When people at FDL want to argue, we try to limit it to one thread. You stay on that thread and finish it, however, long people want to stick with it. If you want to argue with someone, I’d invite you to consider inviting them to a prior thread. If they don’t want to go, you’re out of luck.

Reminds me when I was part of the Clamshell Alliance up at the Seabrook nuclear protest in NH. They used construction workers with 10-foot wood staves to push us back. The state police were mostly from out of state.

North Korea has a very well equipped military that can kill much of the population of Seoul in a matter of hours. Not too mention the 20,000 U.S. troops stationed at the 38th paralell. Do you trust Kim Jong Il to sit passively during a U.S. cruise missile attack?
As armscontrolwonk points out, right now North Korea’s conventional artillery poses more of a threat to South Korea than its nuclear weapons.
A retaliatory strike on Seoul is precisely the reason Clinton didn’t attack the DPRK in the early 90’s. A strike at that time would at least have accomplished something; now the cow’s out the barn door. A strike would cost Seoul for no real gain.
Stepped up Pentagon planning doesn’t mean they’re about to carry something out. Darth Cheney wants some plans on his desk, so they’re going through the motions. But all those plan end with “Any action along these lines will end with the destruction of Seoul and an international economic crisis.“

The weapon of choice in this battle are video and audio. It’s no good taking a beating, if no one films it. With that said, however, I really like TRex’s grit.
Situations like these require GREAT discipline. Lamont supporters cannot throw a punch or say anything obscene or that can in any way be construed as a threat. It’s a lot tougher than it looks.

I’m not sure I’m hernia correctly.
If you find yourself in a situation w/o a video camera, many digital (still) cameras do have the ability to take (kinda crappy) videos for one to a few minutes. It’s better than nothing. Usually there’s a little icon of a movie reel or film frame somewhere on the camera to indicate it. Check your digital camera before you go out, so you can use it if needed!

This is very frustrating. I think one of the lessons we should have learned from the George Allen “macaca” incident is that when something like this is caught on camera, particularly on multiple cameras as John Casper suggested, that it gets far more play than people just recalling what they saw. It’s also much harder to refute or ignore.

We are fooling ourselves if we think that Joe is campaigning this way because he does not have the lead the polls show.
That could be of course, but it is equally likely that they are doing this because they are mean, arrogant bastards who feel that they have their foot on Ned’s neck and they now want to crush him.
Ned needs to take bold action to respond to this or (and it pains me to say this) all is lost.
We need a miracle, and I don’t believe in miracles, so we need action. Ned needs to step up to the microphone and denounce Joe in no uncertain terms.

I can feel my adrenalin rising just from reading about this assault on Ned. I went door to door for Bobby Kennedy in rural York County, VA in 1968 when I was all of 13. The VA Dems backed Humphrey that year so RFK supporters had to use whatever resources we could get. In York our HQ was a small rented office trailer parked on the edge of the parking lot of a defunct strip mall. We didn’t have electricty in the trailer or even a phone. Anyway, one night I was in the trailer by myself folding pamphlets or something when a couple of pick ups full of drunken rednecks tried to break in. They didn’t know I was inside, and finding the door locked they settled for throwing empty beer bottles through the trailer’s windows while I crouched in terror under a table. They finally got bored and left after about 15 minutes. I swore to myself that I would never ever take shit from a Republican. Maybe I need to go to one of Ned’s events in case the LieberHooligans show up.

Ellen – Lieberman knows full well that things can turn on a dime. He was behind 11 pts a week before the 1988 election and he won that by 10,000 votes. Plus – internal polling for both campaigns shows a much tighter race than external polling – and tightening more every day.
That’s not to say that Leiberman isn’t ahead or that Lamont’s challenge is not great.

They and their volunteers document interactions (in trademark bright yellow-green caps) and conflicts, as well as intervening directly with law enforcement. (and jailers and judges and DA’s ,should it come to that.)

I don’t wish death or ill health upon him. I’m hoping he falls under jurisdiction of international war crimes tribunals for his advocacy and vote for acts in contravention of international human rights law.
I’m wishing for Joe a long healthy life lived out in a cell in the Hague.
