Lou Reed has been a big supporter of our Blue America PAC. His latest gift to us is an unreleased version of "Walk on the Wild Side" he recorded in protest over the Iraq war, which we're proud to premier here on FDL.
Thanks to everyone who has been so generous supporting both the PAC and our Blue America candidates. As of today we've raised over $533,000. This is our way of saying thanks.
Walk on the Wild Side (Blue America Remix)
Enjoy.
(Special thanks, as always, to Howie Klein)

I just posted this on the last thread…
I just saw Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council on “Hardball” who says that the Repubs could keep the house and senate because of the new Jersey gay rights issue from last week and also Kerry’s comments. “I think what he said behind what he said this Vietnam Era mentality of the draft where you gotta stay in school to avoid the draft and if you flunk out you end up going over there in the rice paddies.” When Matthews questioned Perkins if he truly thought that was Kerry’s intent Perkins says “Absolutely that’s what he meant.” When Matthews states his differing view, Perkins further digs his hole by saying “If he said it in a vaccuum of never doing anything else to be dismissive toward our troops and our military than I would say you are probably right, but I would disagree with you. I think that it shows that many of the liberals just don’t have an understanding of how there are people that have such committment to this country that they would volunteer to defend the ways and the ideas of this Nation.”
HE WAS TALKING ABOUT JOHN KERRY!
I actually screamed at the television.
I like this one…
Lou Reed???
Thank you, Jane and Christy and FDL!

Roots and Lou !!
This Blue America thing has been an amazing innovation. It short circuits the Daou triangle. It leaves out the high priced wankers in DC, rendering them totally inconsequential.
It uses good homework, great writing, passion for justice, and constant injections of $10 bills to change the world.
I am so impressed with the efforts here and elsewhere (MyDD, AmericaBlog, DKos) to reinvent political funding. Hurrah for brilliant, participatory democracy!!

Thank you Lou and a big thanks to ActBlue for getting me involved.
Hopefully it’s the beginning of a long and sustained effort to put quality progressive people on the radar of voters for years to come!
Scarborough show is blasting the Bush idiots on blaming the generals for Iraq mess. I love it when the right-wingers are on the run. And make no mistakie, the Republicans are in huge trouble. Nov. 8 is going to be sooooo sweeeeet!

And just so everyone knows, Lou has been generous with the checks to Blue America too. But who knew he was such a big Tony Trupiano fan? I spoke to Tony today– he a total music fanatic– and he was going ape ’cause he’s crazy about Lou’s music.

I was just looking at some the $$ from Blue America- downloaded the data into Excel. What was interesting, in part, is the result of “average amount per donor”- actually it’s ~ $15 for a lot of candidates who nonetheless have raised a significant amount of $ via Blue America.
I surely don’t want to discourage anyone from giving larger amounts– this is more to say that small amounts- $5- $15 dollars add up to a lot, when there is such great participation!
Right click, save as, play in WMP. Works like a charm.

Dobson Criticizes Media For Reporting Haggard Allegation
“It is unconscionable that the legitimate news media would report a rumor like this based on nothing but one man’s accusation. Ted Haggard is a friend of mine and it appears someone is trying to damage his reputation as a way of influencing the outcome of Tuesday’s election — especially the vote on Colorado’s marriage-protection amendment — which Ted strongly supports.

I hope Lou’s and Howie’s creative ties to FDL continue beyond Nov. 7.

damn – I knew I was out of my depth on this
OfT: Misleading “Voter Information Guides for Democrats” arrived today at our house, with photos of Feinstein and a bald eagle on the outside. These guides list the entire Dem ticket, and then take oddly non-party positions on, particularly 86 (tobacco tax) and 87 (big oil tax).
I later got an email from the YesOn87 folks saying that the mailers had gone out, not authorized or paid for by any candidates or party, but paid for by the tobacco and big oil opponents of 86 and 87. “Use this guide when you vote” they say on the inside.
The proposition process is badly broken in California — we need to get back to representative government without these hugely expensive initiatives bought and sold by BigBiz.

fyi – The HBO documentary Hacking Democracy is on now and quite *cough* revealing.
Md. Democrats Say GOP Plans to Block Voters
A recently distributed guide for Republican poll watchers in Maryland spells out how to aggressively challenge the credentials of voters and urges these volunteers to tell election judges they could face jail time if a challenge is ignored.
Democrats said yesterday they consider the handbook, obtained by The Washington Post, evidence of a Republican effort to block people from voting Tuesday.

Kirby at Connecticut Bob live blogged the debate and did an amazing job. http://ctbob.blogspot.com/
I’m in Mass right now so I didn’t see it, but from what I read it was very, very good.
The two men clearly like and respect each other (Alan & Ned) – they actually spoke about the issues. No whining, no nasty comments, no hateful glares, no filibustering and going overtime. Just an adult and intelligent discussion – making their different philosophies and approaches known.
I hope CT residents see the difference in tone and content. I’ve lived in CT on and off for 43 years and I truly cannot believe the intelligent, thoughtful people of the nutmeg state will re-elect that vindictive, corrupt and selfish man for a 4th term.
I still believe that Lamont can win. Lieberman was down 11 pts a week before the 1988 election with Weicker and down 6 the night before the election.
People in CT tend to make up their minds as they are walking into the voting booth. I personally had two people come up to me when I was poll watcher on primary day to talk to me about their inability to decide whether to vote for Lieberliar or Lamont (of course I steered them Ned’s way).

Yikes – on the phone I hope.
There are some extremely conservative Dems in Connecticut – I have no idea why they think they are Dems (except perhaps their parents always voted Dem). One “Dem” walked into a coffee shop in Bethel and noticed all the anti Bush petitions, signage, etc. He lectured us that if we didn’t fight them over there – they would come here and throw grenades in our schools.
He clearly believed what he was saying – obviously he listens to Fox news, religiously.
Many CT Unaffiliated and Republican voters are more moderate and reasonable than about 25 to 30% of the “Dems” in CT.

Lou was, and is, no frills, straight ahead rock and vocals. I don’t compare him to Bobby Zimmerman. Apples and oranges. There was a little to compare as Lou got more political.
Someone once said of Johnny Cash that he was Dylan without metaphor. In whatever way that’s true, it’s also true of Lou Reed, though he sometimes tries to bump up against deeper realities (as in Magic and Loss).
But Balrog, if you can’t dig Sweet Jane or Satellite of Love or any of the old hits, don’t sweat it. He ain’t your cup of tea.

That song could be about any sex variation out there, but their take doesn’t turn me on, personally. This is OT, but I have to say something. I spent 6 years in fundie (evangelical) schools. During those six years, the administrator’s of the schools, and the church leaders that were tied to it, were constantly stepping down due to sexual impropriety.
Let’s see…the music teacher’s husband was arrested for propositioning a prostitute in central Louisville. He was a deacon in a fundie church.
His pastor, had to step down after a Swaggertish good-bye to his parishoners. His gay lover ratted him out to the congregation. I went to school with his kids, so I felt badly for them.
The thing that really burned me, though, was before all of the “scandals”, that same church’s choir director was gay, and he was wonderful, and Godly. They forced him out when they figured out that he was more than just flamboyant.
I’ve known these people were dirty hypocrites for years. The rest of America watched the televised fall of the evangelicals in the 80’s and 90’s. How did these people manage to get so much credibility and infiltrate our government?
There must really be some sort of mind control ray…..(adjusting her tin-foil bonnet – the Breeders Cup version).

Agreed. I saw him in the early 70s, when he was quite chemically enhanced. The concert was great but at the end Lou forgot to leave the stage. A roadie came on to lead him off and he started fighting with the roadie. That sure helped kick “Dabble with heroin” off my to-do list.

Frequent random thought lately:

Still, thanks Lou Reed for the lovely Apple flashback. Soon as it finished I picked up “John McLaughlin” on the radio. Couldn’t be mellower.

If you hit Apple-click (or maybe shift; I have an alternate mouse, with a right click button?), you’ll get the menu to downoad the file. When you do, click on it (wherever you send downloads). iTunes will open it right up.

Although my memory is fading as to the details, I’m pretty sure the Worst Song Ever had to be something by The Captain and Tennille…or would that even qualify as a song?
neurophius @ 207
For me it’s anything by Frampton and that ghastly wah-wah talking guitar. I have to turn off the radio or leave the room.
If there is one song that unites more of what I love about American music than “Walk on the Wild Side,” I don’t know what it is. I’ve heard more covers of it over the years than any song but – maybe – “Summertime” or “The Man I Love.” My son’s band is working on a cover of Lou’s song!
So, Lou and Howie help set the scene for this next five days’ walk on the wild side, as the media struggles ever so hard to create a meme that this election is close enough so it can be………..
Not a chance. We’re done with their wild side. Time for ours!

No, no. The worst song ever was “Billy Don’t Be a Hero” by Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods. Followed closely by “Torn Between Two Lovers” by Mary MacGregor. “Magic” by Pilot isn’t too far behind.

The problem is that when some of us were young, and listened to a lot of music on the radio, and there was a lot of music TO listen to on the radio, some of it was OK, and some of it was very, very good, but mixed in with it was some that was just very BAD…I think that’s why they invented car radios with those buttons that you could use to instantly switch to another station.
Bustedknuckles’ link to the new thread leads right back here.

Ha! That brings back a memory of riding in the car with my stepfather when “Magic” by Pilot clanged through the speakers. As soon as my stepfather heard the “Oh,” he was reaching for the button–ANY button–and got it pushed right about the time the guy got to the word “magic” in the first line. Then he said, “Magic is how the station changes whenever that fucking song comes on the radio!”
LJ/Aquaria @ 231
Sounds like my relationship with Rita Cosby, back when she was on right after Keith…
Speaking of old-style radio buttons: Anyone remember figuring out how to press those buttons to “glide” to a station in between the button selections?
Awright…

Haven’t heard the song, but need to comment on the chromasome math. It’s bullshit.
Australian aborigines and europeans have 46 chromasomes. If they had a different number, they’d be separate species. And you wouldn’t see any half-aboriginal children, much like how you never see half-chimpanze children.
The article sounds like some strange white-supremacist bollocks about superior european evolution. Stinky.
kiwifruit @ 238
more from that comment thread:
Sounds like some people still believe in the disproven Lamarkian evolution theory. IOW indidvidual oraganisms do not, as Lamarck believed, evolve.
I wish I had checked in sooner–I am up two hours past my work/bedtime. Thanks to all for all the links to fantastic music–without rock and roll, I think we might have killed ourselves between 2000 and now.
God–Lou Reed.
If any of you are in the San Francisco Bay Area, Lou Reed is playing Election night (7:30 start) at the small Fox Theatre in Redwood City and tickets are still available. I’ll be there.

Fox Theatre — you can buy tix online
The photo of Lou Reed juxtaposed with the adjacent photo of Mr. Fitzgerald I found to be very American. Very different but a lot alike, ya know?
Awesome, awesome, frickin’ great remix! It does not sound as if he did it for ‘a cause’, It just sounds as if he wanted to re-work it for its own sake. I usually hate remixes because they sound so …. deliberate and clumsy.
Thanks so much for this. I can’t tell you how much it’s made my morning.
Hey all–someone upstream asked about the chords to Sweet Jane. Someone later probably answered, but I gotta run to work, so just in case:
D A G Bm A
The rhythm of the thing is the tricky part, and it’s what makes the song.
D (pause) D A G-G (pause) Bm A
Works very nicely with barre chords if you prefer.
Hmmm, Ted Haggard seemed to “Take a Walk On The Wild side”
But above all, Please Vote for Democrats!
Why can’t Lou Reed?

I’m pretty sure the person I quoted just probably misspoke – you know how sometimes when posting a thought on the internets and you can’t think of the right word to say, you wind up saying or implying something completely opposite of what you really think. What they probably wanted to say was something like neanderthal or cro magnon man and what came out was aborigines.
But the overall metaphor which they seem to be getting to in regards to the meaning of the song is that human beings do and should evolve
