It's always great when people who don't read the blogs pass judgment on the blogs. The Democratic Strategist (via Digby):
Because of their different experiences, netrooters have dismissed talk of a sweep as so much old-timer mysticism. Old-timers have been unable to believe the netrooters do not see what is clearly before their eyes. As a result of their different experiences, netrooters are also more focused on carefully bringing home every victory that's clearly in reach and leaving nothing to chance in any race, while the old-timers are wondering whether a bank would loan the DNC $5 million or $10 million against future contributions to expand their reach from 30 targeted seats to 50. Old-timers are also speculating about whether they should count as won the top ten prospective take-overs and shift resources from those seats to the Tier 3 opportunities.
Digby says this is just jockeying for credit on a November 8 that may never happen, and I have to believe that this outcome is far from a foregone conclusion. I know I'm just a netroot newbie, but I find Howie Klein's assessment to be much more reflective of what the actions of the "old timers" and the "netroots" in this election season have actually been:
If recruiting candidates means finding self-financing Republicans to run as "Democrats," we wind up with corporate shills devoid of any Democratic values– like Tim Mahoney in Foley's old seat– or wasting god-only-knows-how-much money trying to defeat anti-war, progressive grassroots Democrats like Jerry McNerney with right-of-center rubber stamps (yeah, our side has that type too). Rahm's recruiting job has been terrible– unless your idea of a good Democrat is a conservative, anti-choice, homophobic Big Business pretty boy like Heath Shuler (who basically tossed a coin to decide if he'd run as a Democrat or a Republican). Meanwhile, did Rahm find a real opponent to take on Jerry Lewis, the most corrupt Republican in the House– and the one most likely to be be indicted and join his pals Ney and Cunningham and Abramoff in prison? (Answer: no; Lewis seems to have found his own "opponent," one who doesn't do any opposing.)
And if he's such a great fundraiser– and I'm not even talking about God having to save us from the Wall Street chits that will be cashed in after the Democrats take over– where are some funds for grassroots candidates an inch and a half from knocking off cash-rich GOP incumbents? Think Angie Paccione v Marilyn Musgrave or John Laesch v Denny Hastert or Coleen Rowley v John Kline or Victoria Wulsin v Mean Jean Schmidt or Steve Porter v Phil English. And every single district that has been a surprise, came not from Emanuel's efforts– except FL-16, which were probably very much his efforts– but despite him. He's always aimed at 15 seats. Democrats will probably take more than double that. Nothing to do with Emanuel at all.
And as far as vetting campaign strategy, I'd say I've talked in-depth to at least 50 Democrats. Exactly one seemed happy about Emanuel's DLC-oriented vetting and that one told me he had it out with Emanuel's attempt to impose his reactionary politics on his campaign and that he was able to convince Emanuel to back off. Most of the other campaigns see him and his anti-liberal interference as much an enemy as the Republicans.
We were engaging in this kind of long-term party building for beneath-the-DCCC-radar candidates on our Blue America page when Rahm was trying trying to run them all out of the race and could only count to 15, and to date we've raised over half a million dollars for them (that's more than the New Democratic Coalition raised for their candidates according to The Hill, so it's not exactly chump change). It's right there for everyone to see, proof that we were raising money for and promoting candidates who are now competitive back when they really needed it.
To all the "old timers" who now want to re-write history and take credit for that: you can't see this either, but I'm raising one finger on your behalf.

Scarborough blasting Bush on Iraq now.
Oklamhoma Kiddo- Isn’t Scarborough that asshole that totally support Bush until he realized Stephen Colbert was brilliant?
Scarborough lost much respect for him during Katrina…
Great post Jane. Especially the linked part about Tim Mahoney.

Hooray for the Mississippi nose-pickers!

Bless you, my dear! As it is known to us Irish, here tis a short wave goodbye. *g*
And btw, those “old-timers” ought to stick to the only thing they’re good at: washing hogs!
With all the Repugs being put out to pasture, washing hogs will be good business!
OT– on faux exclusive interview.
Boosh just said Lieberman is one dem who stands by his vote to go to war and his con-vic-tions and the dems turned their back on him.
Hannity wants to know if he supports Joe.
Boosh: I am staying away from that, heh, heh, heh and a wink and nod from Hannity.
(you just did the opposite, morons)
Hi Jane!
I was following this cr&p a bit from work. Number one thought:
COULD THESE ASSHOLES NOT WAIT UNTIL NOVEMBER 8
Between Netrootz and Dean’s 50-State Strategy we’re finally starting to get away from the Democrats forming a circular firing squad over “boutique” issues. And you ALL know what I mean by boutique issues, don’t you?
At a time when anti-Republican sentiment is at an all-time high, Democratic leaders decide the best plan is to appear more conservative, i.e. more like Republicans… So much for dancin’ with the one who brung ya.
ah.
Boosh just said that it was important to get the tall one, the number 2, we got Zarqawi and when the #3 “pops up” whoever, whenever it is.
I can’t stand it.
ifthethunderdontgetya @ 12

OT: just saw this at Salon.com:
Of course they are saying these things. They are already doing damage control to try to take credit for the dem wave so they can cash in with the lobbyists and play at totally ignoring us. Let them dream on. We are now here to stay. Dau’s triangle is standing on all three legs, thank you very much.
I hope we are keeping our eyes open for a good progressive to challenge Rahm in ‘08. I’m saving up my pennies to contribute to whomever that will be.
FDL is running really slowly for me. At least it’s working. Reminds me of being at the house in West Virginia with a 28.8 modem, only runing at 19.6.
But to get back on message, how many times this summer did Howie have a candidate on who told us that Rahm was doing exactly nothing for him or her?
This just shows that are job isn’t over on November 7.
What I don’t understand about the following quote by Bloomberg is this: The voters of Connecticut voted Joe out. End of story Mr. Bloomie!
BLOOMBERG QUOTE:
“I think the voters of Connecticut understand they need proven independent leadership. Joe Lieberman provides that,” Bloomberg said at a news conference after greeting commuters with Lieberman at the Stamford train station. “I think people of all parties are just tired of the political bickering.”
http://www.wnbc.com/news/10195396/detail.html
Actually I had not much respect for Scarborough before Katrina. The point of pointing out Scarborough’s change of view with respect to Iraq is to ask, if die hard proponents of the Bush invasion of Iraq such as Scarborough are jumping ship, where does that leave proponents, say, like Hillary, of keeping the troops in Iraq?
And I do not hold it against anyone the fact that they change their minds on anything in the face of overwhelming supportive evidence contrary to their previously held suppositions or position(s).
To all the “old timers” who now want to re-write history and take credit for that: you can’t see this either, but I’m raising one finger on your behalf.
I suggest we all do that when we show up at local Dem post-election parties, meetings, etc.
I have a further suggestion – paint that middle digit purple!
A sign that things have changed: On CNN’s Larry King, in a discussion about Michael J. Fox vs. Limbaugh and Parkinsons/stem cell research, Laura Ingraham was pouting about being outnumbered (and out-argued) by James Carville and David Gergen. Six months ago, this would have not have happened.
punaise @

That’s an excellent catch.
Ed*ard Teller @ 22
I will be more than happy to comply!
This is pretty typical. Here in Louisiana we are on the air in District 5, running ads against Rodney Alexander. Who will take credit for that if an improbable upset occurs?
But of course those who will receive promotions if the elections are favorable to Democrats will take credit for the work of the netroots. Did anyone expect anything else? But at least we know we did our job, even if it is thankless. Besides, we have to oust every single Republican, as they will say anything to win an election.
glad that someone ran the super Drano through the toobz. They were getting awfully clogged.
Thank you.
I think you are underestimating the total $ raised by the netroots.
I have not given any $ through act blue but have sent $ directly to chosen candidates. I’m sure I represent the tip of the iceberg.
Jane, this is just a smashdown post. Get right to it as you always do. I’m also worried about how slow getting into FDL is right now, because we need you on election day and after!!! I know there have been posts before about this, way back even, and it was offered that the site could take the load. There must be a very high load now. Thanks for everything you do and we do. GOTV and rock democracy!

Hmmmmmm the internets seem slow
When I started lurking here at FDL, there were few signs of a Dem revolt anywhere.
I have followed the uprising (while contributing where and when I can) and the turnaround has been stunning.
I think I joined around the beginning of the Plameology series. Look where we are now.
CHS, JH, FDLers, we know where the revolution came from. And we will celebrate our successes and failures briefly before turning against the next Orcs.
GOTV, and call me in the morning 11-8-06.
Carville was on the Situation Room tonight giving all the credit to Emanuel and Schumer, no mention of Howard Dean.
What I appreciate about Act Blue – Blue America is that it allowed me to hear about races I would never have known about and support some candidates who are worthy to be supported. This is in regardless as to whether or not they win. I have given to Roger Sharpe in NC a couple of times because of the opportunity to blog with him. We want to encourage the Roger Sharpes and Victoria Wuslins of this country to take a chance, put themselves on the line so to speak because it is with good people like them who bring change and renewal to this country. Regardless of who claims credit on November 8th, you will all know that you had a big and inmportant part in it. I salute you all!
I was worried about you on an earlier post Jane that you wearing down. But the one finger salute has now convinced me otherwise. I hate the Raul blowhard from my state. Please forgive us here in Illinois.
In the first quote (from the Democratic Strategist), if you replaced “netrooters” with “poll-watchers” and “oldtimers” with “trend-watchers” then it makes sense. Many of the bloggers I’ve read seem to me to be on the trend-watcher side.
naschkatze @ 35
Our targets are being defined for us. Just like Kissinger with the pointer, they are ever being defined.

I voted by absentee ballot today in the likely event I will in CT helping out Ned. The county election office was swamped. The people who were working were schocked at the level of activity and the number of people who had come in already. They had never seen anything like this they told me.
This is in Gloucester County in southern NJ. Back to deadlines. Nothing like a breath of fresh air off the Lake to revive the spirit.
RevDeb @ 18
Maybe Christine Cegelis could move into his district? That would be some lovely payback!
Yes, of course Rahm & Co. will piss and moan and maneuver to claim all credit and to call the shots next time. It’s going to happen. Big woo.
It won’t change what really happened. The candidates who are elected without Rahm’s help aren’t going to owe him a damn thing on November 8. That’s a good thing.
The danger is going to be in the next cycle, when Rahm will be able to double whatever the netroots offers to any of our, now, incumbents.
I guess we need to make sure we don’t donate to the DCCC and we do donate to individual candidates and through mechanisms like Blue America. We need to continue to focus our power — which also comes in the form of boots on the ground — and not give our resources away. As someone said, they want our money and our labor. They do not want us. Well, to that I say, “What’s it like to want?”
I also think it will be a very good thing if we have more “Lieberman events” — primary purges.
Ah, that bit from Howie warms my heart.

Hillary’s presidential aspirations depend on Bill Clinton going to Connecticut to campaign for Ned Lamont.
If he doesn’t go, it will speak volumes to all of us who have worked so hard for Ned Lamont.
And it will never be forgotten.

Listening to the reruns of Bush’s recent campaign speeches, his claims are so outrageous and dishonest it seems doubtful he’s actually trying to persuade anyone who’s still undecided and has an ounce of sense. These appearances seem more designed just to rile up the base enough to get them to vote.
That’s always been mr. Rove’s strategy — divide the country and count on your base and enough independents doing a better GOTV than our base — but this time, the rest of the country, even the trad press, seems to be rejecting his message.
I’m actually glad the election isn’t for another week, cause given the trends, in another week things will be even worse for the Pres and his party. (and Lamont needs the time). I can’t see any real issue improving for Bush in the meantime, and the media seem to be painting Iraq as in virtual collapse, with more and more panelists calling it a fiasco/disaster/failure/ etc. Only a major new event can reverse this — and as things get worse, that becomes the only thing we truly have to fear. And anything with even a hint of phoniness could backfire. Bush needs a true crisis, and I’m not sure Rove has got one of those in his playbook, unless the’ve got a way to provoke the Iranians into attacking us.
It’s really too bad. There was a time when I thought Hillary was the cat’s pajamas. No more. The Senator’s disrespect of Lamont, her position on the Iraq war and the Middle East in general did me in. I dislike Hillary Clinton.
OldCoastie @ 109
Good thought. Burns was a one-term congresscritter who was booted 2 years ago by Barrow. (Who is, in my opinion, a DINO, but consider where I live.) Bush has been here twice and Cheney at least once. They must be scared about something… (I hope, fingers, toes and eyes all crossed…)

The interesting thing about Hillary, is that what she needs to do for herself doesn’t require a minute of triangulating. She needs to get on the correct side of the Iraq issue, before its too late.
And the best way for her to do that is to go to Connecticut and say, “ya know, I hoped as long as I could that we could find a successful way out of Iraq, and that if only we didn’t have the incompetent Bush Administration in charge, we might be able to save the situation. But I’ve now come to the conclusion that Bush has made such a mess of it, it may be impossible to fix. So maybe Ned Lamont was right; this was just a mistake from the beginning, and we have to figure out how to get out. We have to do it carefully, safely, responsibly, in coordination with our Iraq friends, but we have to get out. And then we have to be willing to do everything we can to help them rebuild once they decide how to govern themselves without our dictating it. And it’s not just Iraq; that whole Bush/neocon policy is making Isreal less secure, and for that reason too, it’s time for a change. And I think Ned Lamont deserves a lot of credit for seeing that before some of the rest of us, and that’s why I’m hear today to support his election. Joe Lieberman will always be my friend, but on this issue, I think he’s just wrong, and it’s time for a change.”
In one stroke, she’d save her presidential ambitions, capture the leadership of the Party (even the Senate, if she wanted), minimize the risks of losing pro-Israeli support, probably lead to the end of the war (and perhaps get credit for it) and at least keep us progressives neutral or interested, if not make us supporters.
C’mon Billary. You can figure this out. Ned has made it easy for you. And I wrote your damn speech.

I like the Wes Clark ad too. But I’d prefer the same words coming out of Ned’s mouth. Wes isn’t running against Lieberman, or is Hillary, or is Bill…
Time to go for the throat, IMO.
Bonkers: CD Rahm..that’s a keeper!

Good to hear SJVG! Fingers crossed for ya!
Whooo hoo! someone just quoted Valley Girl (not by name, but linked) in a response to the new Ned ads:
Attention Team Lamont:
~~I just saw this comment on the NYT endorsement over at firedoglake
RevDeb and Scarecrow- I surely hope that the Lamont campaign is making copies of this editoral for ALL of the canvassers to hand out, not just the folks like you who take the initiative to make your own copies.
It really is a damning editorial.~~~
GO NED, and thanks Loch!

So very true.
The War just gets worse and worse. I don’t think people care anymore about anything but the one issue: Iraq. Quagmire. Rs out. Now.
Valley Girl @ 127
ROCKS!!!!
I can’t believe how in the video, she gets in the car and drinks her coffee like she hasn’t a care in the world. Amazing. A week before the election she acts like that. Yowza.
amazona @ 134
I have never looked into this stuff, though I am curious.
Thank you for your sweet comment. :)

Here’s the Blue America link for Angie Paccione, btw.
TRex is upstairs now…

There’s another question waiting for November 8. Ed*ard Teller hasn’t waited, I have. But we agree.

I love to hear stories from the Iowa caucus. Those are some pragmatists…and they don’t stint on asking the hard questions, one on one.
I’m looking for the pipe cleaners. My toobz are clogged. I can’t get YouTube to load…not a one. :(
Was trying to do ascii art finger…but the board doesn’t like ascii.

It’s not the amount that’s important. It’s a g.d. smoking gun (a howitzer really) of Bush selling his office — impeachable by anybody’s measure.
I’ll be blunt…
The sooner we through Ramit Emmanuell under the bus the better. And…
I join in that one finger salute to the folks in the ‘Democrat’ Party.
Ya tools of the Reich Wing all gotta GO!

He will. He’s gonna soldier right up that hill take it with a bright Blue flag!
We really need to put Schumer and Rahm in a box and ship em off to BFE. Aided and abetted by a media that is telling the world the Dems only “won” because they ran anti choice, conservative Dems; and we are fucked. Please Jane. Kick Kos and all the rest in the ass after Nov. 8 and remind them that we are progressives and Americans before we are Dems. If anyone of the netroots candidates turn out to be another GD Nelson in Nebraska, I’ll never donate another GD dime.

Yup, me too. $1500 and counting so far this season.
Digby says this is just jockeying for credit on a November 8 that may never happen
BlueDogger Ellen Tauscher’s doing the exact same thing. She was on the front page of yesterday’s NYT spewing very similar crap in an effort to disparage the fifty-state strategy and Dean (and us, who are the biggest backers thereof).
Kos supported Tim Walz (MN-1) long before the DCCC did.
don’t forget the Wellstone Action group in the mix…last election cycle democrats picked up 13 seats and turned a majority in our state legislature…9 out of those 13 winners went through wellstone action’s training institute for running campaigns and/or being a progressive candidate for office. many many others ran for county commissioner, local school boards, city councils and other local races off the radar screen. these workshops are offered nationwide and are contributing to the progressive swell in democrat land too…thanx to the blogosphere for giving me hope and grabbing back my government from the maws of fatcats, assholes, hypocrites, and perverted prudes (or prudish perverts)….

My finger is with Jane’s!
It’s right there for everyone to see, proof that we were raising money for and promoting candidates who are now competitive back when they really needed it.
Yup.
Early money matters.
A good fundraising operation can take that $100K and turn it into $1 million over the course of a one-year campaign.
