The LA Times misses several boats :
Republicans are ringing alarms about what the House would be like if the GOP lost control: a throwback to unreconstructed liberalism, big-government activism, tax increases and weak-kneed defense. They point with Halloween horror to the likely line-up of Democratic committee chairmen, including Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., and other liberal old-timers.
But, like Shuler, many of the Democratic candidates most likely to be elected are cut from a different cloth. Sixteen of them have been endorsed by the Blue Dogs, a coalition of conservative Democrats. Several of them used to be Republicans. Shuler was recruited to run as a Republican a few years ago but opted not to.
With so many conservative-leaning candidates at the forefront of the Democratic effort, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has, at least for now, stuck to a minimalist agenda that steers clear of grand, liberal ambitions.
Instead, Democratic leaders are focusing – and almost all serious Democratic candidates are campaigning on – a limited agenda that includes raising the minimum wage, repealing tax breaks for oil companies, restoring college-tuition tax breaks, cutting Medicare drug costs and other plans they believe could draw bipartisan support.
"Grand liberal ambitions?" What, you mean nobody is screaming "woo hoo, bigger government" and "let's surrender to Al-Quaeda, they're scary?" Because you know, those are at the top of the unpublished Official Liberal Agenda.
It is due to the fact that word "liberal" has been so demonized, so thoroughly mischaracterized and redefined by right-wing extremists that articles like this get written. The premise seems to be that it will be the triumph of conservative values that could take the House for the Democrats, but power will be turned over to flaming liberal committee chairs.
If many of the "blue dogs" get elected it is not by virtue of the popularity of their "values," it's because they live (and appeal to voters) in states where the pendulum is more likely to swing from one party to another at a moment when the GOP is remarkably unpopular, and it doesn't take tremendous powers of observation to figure that out.
The author refers to Henry Waxman as "an unapologetic liberal of an older generation," as if he's a broken down 8-track or something. Look at Henry Waxman's web page. If there's anyone who has been keeping his eye on the ball during the past six years and staying current with where the country ought to be despite the distractions of the emotional kindergartners who actually run the country, it's Henry Waxman:
- Democratic Medicare Drug Reforms Could Save Seniors Billions of Dollars – you know, by allowing the government to negotiate drug prices. In strict violation of the "raise taxes at all time" line item of the Official Liberal Agenda.
- Democratic Truth Squad Introduces 'Clean Contracting Act' — as ranking member of the Committee on Government Reform, Waxman wants to know where all the money went: "Contracts collectively worth over $762 billion have been plagued by significant waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement under the Bush Administration." Probably wants to get it all back just to blow it on weed.
- Homeland Security Contracts Waste Hundreds of Millions of Taxpayer Dollars — Henry released a comprehensive report saying that Joe Lieberman's baby, the Department of Homeland Security, has engaged in "pervasive mismanagement and waste. According to the report, noncompetitive contracts have soared over 700% in just three years, and the total value of the Department’s wasteful contracts exceeds $34 billion." Yet another reason to be happy that Joe Lieberman boasts that a victory for him would return him to the chairmanship of the Homeland Security panel.
- Iraq Reconstruction Efforts — Acording to a new report by the GAO there are "a record $3.5 billion in questioned and unsupported contractor charges in Iraq." Henry had to get special dispensation fro the Vast Liberal Conspiracy to engage in this fiscal responsibility, likewise his call to urge Dennis Hastert to hold hearings on the increased global terrorist threat. Needless to say, we almost tore hiscard up over that one.
The article is so ill-informed, so thoroughly misguided as to be absurd. The goals that Henry Waxman is pursuing are all laudable objectives that should be the goal of any adult tasked with Congressional oversight regardless of party. And if the more conservative members of the party are more likely to be susceptible to taking money from lobbyists and shirk this responsibility it doesn't make them "centrists," it makes them crooks.

Amen, sister!
Waxman ruuules!
I think that Waxman is the one person more than any other to take apart the current regime brick by brick to the foundation and then dig under it. I suspect he going through his files now. A rock, or a turd, he will look under it. Halliburton and others will want to put a contract out on him. The WORST Fricking Nightmare those assholes could imagine. It will be trick or treat time!!
Fritzmas or Waxmas! Take your choice! Justice is coming and they’re carrying Big Irons on their hips! The gunfight at the O.K. Corral revisited!! The lead will be a flyin’! Bush will want his mommy!! His face will be in the horse crap after Marshal Waxman gets his carcass! (I live in Arizona so what do you expect!)
Please add the Gang of 500 losers to those who need to be beaten.
I would love to watch that myself AZ,but I am hopeing for med cannibis to be on someones list…the current mess is not fair to anyone…
AZ Matt: How’s your Senate race looking a week before 11/7?
Henry Waxman, George Miller, and Nancy Pelosi – the Rethugs will need adult diapers!
lotsa malox…
Well, well. Duncan Hunter, another of the nasty Republicans foisted on America by San Diego area voters, thinks he’s good enough to be the next Preznut of the USA.
Apparently he will announce tomorrow morning his intention to “explore” a run, choosing the waterfront site where he began his “humble career” too many years ago.
It always amazes me how many hopelessly unsuitable people imagine themselves to be presidential material. Frist is a poster child for the breed. George Allen is another. But as a long-time Duncan Hunter watcher, I have to say that he may trump them all.
Make that trump them all, except for Dubya. Who got elected, which gives hope to other ambitious, self-deluded dunces. Yeah, I’m talking about you, Dunce Duncan.
I am an unreconstructed liberal (no to DLC; no to ‘third-way’; no to war; and on and on) Democrat. I wasn’t born this way. Good behavior is learned. My family and friends, many of whom are Republicans know this. They can like it or lump it. Period.
And I like Waxman.
I think Rep. John Conyers[sp?}will be the one to watch…an old pissed off black man with a long memory, and lots of questions
lina @ 10
Kyl is ahead but there is a chance Pederson can catch up. I am way far away from the happenings on an Indian Reservation so current news here can be iffy. The Indian Tribes aren’t happy with him because he has a staff member who is anti-tribal sovereignty and that was making the rounds of tribal e-mails. I think there will have to be a Blue Tide to wash Kyl away.
These are some of the same people who call Fitz a runaway prosecutor.
Oh no, the big bad liberal agenda!!
Hollywood Agenda
Limousine Liberal Agenda
Gay Agenda
Activist Judge Agenda
What’s with all these labels? I guess the goal is to label, remove any nuance or depth, and then demonize and discredit.
As an aside, I saw O’reilly on Oprah the other night. He was consumed with trying to do just that. No matter who commented, they were either a “t-warrior” or a devil (forget the term, I heard Bush hater, fox hater, and hollywood type, i think)
Good thing Joe Lie will work with these people to ensure the lefties don’t get too polarizing.
CatelynK @ 13
You are serious!? Duncan Hunter?!! He is an SOB, no better than Bush, well maybe smarter but no better. GOP is desparate.
“Grand liberal ambitions?” What, you mean nobody is screaming “woo hoo, bigger government” and “let’s surrender to Al-Quaeda, they’re scary?” Because you know, those are at the top of the unpublished Official Liberal Agenda.
Desperate times call for desperate, well, lying.
That bozo Rep. Royce (R) from California was on some show this morning saying the Democrats will raise your taxes 58%. Frist used that same number last week. It must be a Halloween thing, BOO!!!
Cozumel @ 19
THe KKKarl Rove School of Republinazi Lying is taking applications now for 2008. The cost is only your soul!

Responded to your propaganda statement on the previous thread
Conyers, of the House Committee on the Judiciary wants an impeachment inquiry. Rove know this. So does the President.
Cozumel @

As usual, it’s all projection.
Most likely, they know Democrats would bloody well like to raise Frist’s taxes 58%, so that the little people don’t have to subsidize his “blind” assets anymore.
I would love to see the Bush Boys and Girls in front of Conyers but I think it will be Waxman and others that will dismantle the administration.
This post is sort of a “teaser” for life in the liberal blogosphere after the elections. I find it quite exciting that fake Democrats (they’re really Corporatists), and the Corporate media will not be able to get away with their shit any longer without getting exposed. The influence Blognia-Herzegovinia has had this past year has been astounding, and to think we’re just taking our baby steps.
The corporate whores should be shaking in their stillettoed boots.

I thought Hunter is one of the ones who’s most likely to be indicted shortly.
David Roth campaign stalwart, soyinkafan, has posted a Kos Diary that could use a few recommendations.
C&L has a clip from an SNL cartoon last night depicting the RNC ad blitz for the last week of the campaign.
It may be damned close to what they’ll try to do.
Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee pumps $1 million into race to knock off Rep. Chris Shays (R-CT).

The showdown between the Constitution and BushCo is going to be one for the history books. BushCo has never submitted to oversight. I’m sure they don’t intend to any time in this decade.

I worry, cuz that’s what I do, that if we’re lucky enough to take the House back and the Fab Waxman and Conyers start their investigations the Prez and his thugs will all claim Executive Priv and State Secrets or whatever law they hide behind to prevent the truth from coming out. So it’ll go to the courts and we all KNOW how THAT’LL turn out.
So I drink.

The MSM slaves will
smooch fannysbe kind to Democrats ONLY after Nov. 7th.Until then, they will slavishly reguritate any and all Repug memes and talking points ’cause that’s what slaves do.
Repug masters says shit, MSM slaves say how high?
And if the Democrats make a big enough splash come Nov. 7th, well those ol’ MSM slaves just co-incidently will somehow conveniently forget they spewed all that Repug crap.
“What, I never…I mean some of my best friends are Democrats, Liberals, Progressives…can I have another cocktail weenie, pretty pleeeeeezzze?”
If my memory serves me correctly, Conyers would be the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee if the House is flipped. His was the first congresscritter blog I found.
Unless he changes his mind before his 10am self-launch, he’s a’runnin.’ Well, explorin’ a run.
Don’t I wish! He recently took out a full-page ad in the San Diego newsrag to refute allegations about funny business regarding assessment and taxation related to a property he bought some years ago. I don’t know if there’s anything illegal going on, at least with this particular incident.
Really, he should be thrown out of his current office just on general principles of conduct and decency. But nothing he does or leaves undone stops his supporters from re-electing him.
If you check out dailykos, you will see that Cubin and Trauner are locked in a nearly dead even race. If you can give a little to Trauner it will go a long way – ads are cheap in the mountain west. Believe me, Cubin is among the worst of the worst and her defeat despite Cheney’s best efforts would be an incredible achievement. Trauner is on our act blue page I believe. Please consider giving.

This whole month is going to cost me sleep, money, and worry…my wife and I voted today, here in oregon, vote by mail is so cool…but heartache if lieberman keeps his seat, and continues to poison the well. There must be some kind of major surgery if the dems dont want to jes’be rethug lite…the corpratist must be removed from the leadership….why Feingold isnt helping Lamont burns me on a candidate I could support for pres in a heartbeat

Interesting diary about Lamont door-to-door efforts- diary and comments very encouraging.
Shuler just got the big endorsement from the Asheville paper, which ought to be seen as a mea culpa for endorsing the incumbent GOPper last time. It’s a strange district for the LA to base any conclusions on.
Anyway, it misses the big point: the Blue Dogs will vote happily for the investigations that Waxman, Conyers and Rangel have on their laundry list, and for the leadership’s headline legislation — increased minimum wage, Medicare bargaining powers, etc. There’s no ideological schism there, even if the GOP frame it as conservative Dems enabling forced gay marriage and mandatory abortions.
TRex is taking on Lynne Cheney upstairs.

If you ever keep chickens and need someone to take your eggs to market, don’t call Rahm Emanuel.
No on everything but 39, 44, 46 and 47.
It was Gore Vidal, many moons ago, who said (and I’m paraphrasing from memory) that the primary function of Congress is to oversee the Treasury–to disburse funds carefully and monitor how the money is being spent, and all the “moral values” crap is a smokescreen to hide what they are really doing, which is abject cronyism.
You’d think that the classic conservatives would be overjoyed that someone like Waxman would finally have the opportunity to inject some fiscal responsibility into the Congress, but, noooooooo.
And, what about that “small government” business. The Dept. of Homeland Security was the single biggest reorganization of the federal bureaucracy since the National Reorganization Act of 1946, and its accompanying National Security Act of 1947, and it immediately added to the budget. And, then, it immediately became a haven for crony capitalism (thanks, Joe)–like Duke Cunningham’s favorite limousine service.
You’d think even the simple-minded reporters would begin to figure out what’s going on… but, nooooooooooooo.
pseudonymous in nc @ 46
Great. Diane Farrell, his opponent, is wonderful and I want her to win almost as much as Lamont.
Bill or Hillary could really help all the candidates in Connecticut by campaigning there.
Let’s get one thing straight – there hasn’t been an honest repuke since Lowell Weicker and Barry Goldwater.
Weicker quit the party and Goldwater pretty much washed his hands of it in the last years preceding his death.
In this day and age, I thnk it’s safe to say, every repuke is crooked, and we’d be better off if we got to read a large and inclusive obituary of each and every one of them.
Adie if you’re here – I left you some links on the bottom of the Torches and Pitchforks thread – @8:37
Jane:
As a constituent of Henry Waxman, I am offended by the term “unapologetic” – as if one has to apologize for being a liberal. Henry Waxman is a proud liberal, not an unapologetic liberal.
jane, articles like this are a direct result of the wingnut management of Tribune Company, which has done such a great job with the LAT in the past number of years of ownership that they’ve now put themselves up for sale and yet amazingly aren’t even getting any offers.
just like their johns in the GOP, Tribune Company managers are twirling about that brass pole, trying like fuck to get a few fetching glances thrown their way – to no avail.
this article is just the latest in the decline of the LAT’s once formidable (and objective) national political reporting.
thanks for nothing, Chicago assholes. you make the Chandlers look like the fucking Kennedys.
i hope Eli Broad ponies up that cash (along with Burkle) and the LAT gets a new lease on life. with circ declines a reality, something’s got to give.
Jim in LA @ 53
That doesn’t explain why the NYT has an almost identical piece, again featuring Shuler, with reliable shill Anne Kornblut on the byline. The Gang of 500 Idiots’ script couldn’t be clearer: conservative Dem candidates are stalking horses for Scary Nancy and her Scary Black Liberal Men. Anyone know if Halperin tipped his hat on this line?
dab @49: as much as I’d like Shays sent on his way, devoting almost all of a $1m buy to one district, in the most expensive media market, when small investments in cheaper races could make a difference? I don’t see the sense of that, especially when the party’s vacillations over the Senate race are doing wonders for the GOP House incumbents. With a week to go, Emanuel isn’t going to seal the deal in CT-4 with more ads.
Ill informed? Misguided?
Yep. That’s the LAT.
And of course media would be frightened at the prospect of someone honest chairing a committee in Washington. They might start asking questions.
Jim in LA @ 53:
Amen, amigo. The Times is now a worthless rag. Even the comics page sucks (why, oh, why must we be subjected to “Mallard Fillmore” every morning?????)
The only reason it still hits my driveway every morning is that the OC Register continues to be even worse.
Jane, I sent you and Christy a message on your Gmail accounts, asking if either of you could write a column describing the GOP’s “72 Hour GOTV” practice and how it differs from ours.
I’ve seen the term used quite a bit here and in news sources, but I’ve never known exactly what it entailed. I assumed they use churches to a large extent. Thanks.
You asked for comments from lurkers, so I’ll weigh in on this topic, sort of…with the Rs predicting the demise of the country with Pelosi, Waxman, etc. running things, why aren’t the congressional Democrats pointing out who will probably be majority leader if we don’t take the Senate…Mitch McConnell, who looks to me like an oppo researcher’s dream??
Apres pseudonymous in nc:
The Shuler race was also the subject of that broadcast report last week by that lazy dope Candy Crowley. (That was fascinating. I hadn’t realized that Nixon aborted a Soviet style revolution led by the Democrats in ‘68. Glad to have The Best Political Team Comprised Of Dimwitted, Gullible Clowns Who Act As Ventriloquist Dummies For The Republicans On TV around to help guide us through all this confusion.)
The right has always belittled both Conyers and Rangel (I don’t know how many much-younger snot nosed Repuke dildoes I’ve had to watch call Rangel “Charlie”, like he’s a cabana boy), this is nothing new.
The upshot of these reports seems to be that Pelosi will outlaw bras and makeup and Rangel will bust out the Muscatel and force Jenna Bush to marry LeBron James.
It’s patenly sickening, even for a party that considers an open racist like George Allen worthy to be a Senator.
‘Liberalism’ has become a bad word because no one ties it to the concept of ‘Liberty’, ‘liberation’, ‘liberate’, etc, some of the most American of concepts.
Hi, all!
I’m not an American. As a lifelong musician/advertising creative type, I frequently wish I’d had the luck to be so. I have enjoyed all of my multiple and one-off visits to Hawai’i, NYC, Chicago, L.A., SF, New Orleans, San Diego, Vegas, etc. – and the grace and hospitality I encountered. But, as a longtime expat operative in S-E Asia (Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia) I have also witnessed some “ugly Americanism”.
I have a lot of respect for FDL and its community, but, as a citizen of the world with a daughter just entering adulthood, I am disturbed by what current U.S. behavior may augur in respect of future generations’ ability to freely emulate my enjoyment of “les differences” that make life on this planet interesting, challenging and, ultimately, more rewarding than the psychological “subsistence” adhered to by many in communities such as yours, where only 60 million out of 300 million even possess a passport.
Whilst I appreciate that there are many small campaigns and battles to be waged at a local level, I would hope that ‘thinking” Americans can also appreciate the dynamic effect of their nation’s policies upon those of us who don’t get to exercise a vote on such decisiojn-making.
I implore you to consider the following article – especially the final few paragraphs – on the basis that you care about America’s impact on humanity beyond your municipalities, state lines and national frontiers. Sorry it’s so long and possibly slightly OT, but I really feel it needs to be read – and, hopefully, acted upon. Thank you for your indulgence:

They become like rabid dogs when it comes to Iran. See and hear Hillary bark. What is behind all of this? Big secret…huh? It is inforgivable the she, her compassionate hubby and nearly all the other bigwigs over at the Presidium of the Deomcratic Party left Ned Lamont to fight completely on his own. They simply abandoned him and the party he represents. May Kerry and Clark be applauded. You can be sure that come victory on November 7 Billary and peers, for instance the Republican Marshall Wittman of Bull Moose infamy, will be the first to claim credit and push to the front to take the prizes which are the fair due of the ‘centrists’ like Sore Loser Joe. No matter what:
VOTE DEMOCRATIC! HA!
At about 3:30 A.M EST there was a slide show of funerals at Arlington Cemetery on the front page of the NY Times on line. They disappeared no more than 15 minutes later. Is this the first time the NY Times shows such pictures? The front-page pictures keep changing. Maybe the funerals will return. Odd to alternate funerals with pictuers of basketball games and other kinds of entertainment. I can’t believe that the pictures my have also been shown in the print edition.
Should we strike Iran…and I fear nothing so much…we will destroy the order of things beyond all repair. We will witness our own destruction,as a nation.
