I'm pleased to present the first podcast of The Spin I'm In at Firedoglake!
The accompanying playlist is also included here with linking to iTunes if you want to buy the songs that you like in a higher quality format (believe me it's worth it). As always, we have links to the artists' websites if you want to find out more about them.
Some of you will notice that I've had some of these newer songs in my playlist in the recent past. I wanted to podcast the entire songs to really allow you to check them out. This is good material and deserves attention and sales.
I love discovering and being turned on to music and artists that excite me. I hope that you'll enjoy these musical selections. Warning: you may need dancing shoes.
I'd love to hear The Spin You're In in the comments section.

What a treat to have in the office on a Friday afternoon.
Close the doors, turn on the music — oh yeah, and get back to work.
Thanks Donita!
slainte,

Gah! EPU’d and stuck in moderation… Here’s an abbreviated and hopefully acceptable version of what I posted down-line:
KO’s on Page Six:
“KEITH Olbermann is thisclose to his day of reckoning for a one-night stand. […]
“[The one-night stand]also says the more criticism she gets from Olbermann’s fans, “the closer I get to going full-throttle and publishing all of the dirt. You’re KO’s worst enemy. I hope you can live with it.”
Hear the whine of swift boats headed down the river?

Have any of you seen “paycheck stuffers” for political candidates/issues?
The podcast rocks! Thank you so much!
watertiger and attaturk have been up to some seriously hilarious mischief with their “Character Counts” GOP calendar.

DONITA!!!
I’m in the office and we’re broadcasting Beethoven’s 9th right now. Man, there are some crazy tonalities in this symphony. Just…out there. Beethoven was a mad genius.
As soon as the fourth movement ends, I’ll listen to the podcast.
punaise @ 7
Not. Right. At. All.
punaise @ 8
I love the pic that has Laura with a doobie.
TRex @ 8
That 4th movement (Ode to Joy) is the most beautiful piece of music ever written IMHO. Did you ever hear the Walter Carlos (now Wendy Carlos) version on the soundtrack to A Clockwork Orange? That version of it was so haunting and life altering for me, it’s what made me want to play synthesizers. Great stuff!
TRex @ 8
T-REX!!!! Roll Over Beethoven!! (When you’re finished)
Oh, awesome! I get to hear Donita’s voice! So fun…am loving this. :)
Congrats 21,000,000 site visits. Ola from Dominican Republic. Have posted a little at the bottom of the last thread so as not to take this off topic. Hi to all.
Did you know that we have Beethoven to thank for the strength of the modern piano? He played them so hard, especially as his hearing was going, that he would end up smashing them to match-wood. They were just spindly little things, initially, but LVB went all Pete Townsend on them so they had to make him stronger ones. Well, once they started making them bigger and stronger, they realized what a huge difference it made in the sound. Now the old school pianos are called fortepianos and they’re really only used in chamber music that requires a lighter, sweeter sounding piano.
I am a storehouse of useless knowledge, I know.
Hey egregious — safe travel to you! :) (And there’s a Fitz fix for the first post of the day, just FYI…)
Donita, I’m now playing this podcast after downloading. Thanks for choosing a site that provides this option. Not all multimedia sites do this. Flash isn’t available on all computers, particularly the 64 bit ones.
Oooh, Deee-Lite!! The kids are going to boogie when they get home from school today!!
Hey Donita and gang, just wanted to give you an update on how discussing “lock-outs” is helping us. It’s part of a list of things we think can help rejuvenate a dying (read: dead) downtown district. The idea of finding a way to provide housing for university students and lock-outs for artists in the same area was very popular; we’re going to put this on a wash-list to discuss with local banks and economic development folks once the election is over.
Oh, and I have a new fun toy!! It’s YASNS (yet another social network software), but it’s built around music. Check out iLike.com — very, VERY new, squeaky new, but it looks like it could be a lot of fun. Anybody wanting to try it, send me an email and I’ll send you an invite to “be my friend”; you’ll be able to see what I’m listening to whenever I’m on line and in iTunes. rayne_today -at- yahoo.com
Christy Hardin Smith @ 13
Hi Christy!!! Thanks, I hope you like it. More to come. How’s it going over in the Two Year Old Set?

don’t miss Miss June
Donita at 20 — It’s going to have to wait until she gets home from preschool today, I’m afraid. But for momma’s purposes, it’s rocking!
thanks for the podcast!
Donite ROCKS! This is great. I’ve put my podcast hopes on hold until Dane Benson kicks Don Young out of his DC office.
Christy: David Safavian is being sentenced today. Is there a way to get his PSI report? I wrote this three weeks ago re his relationship to Don Young:
Although Safavian has been pinned mostly for the well-known golf junket to Scotland, which has also brought down Congressman Bob Ney of Ohio, Don Young’s name came up in another aspect of Safavian’s trial, the aforementioned Old Post Office Complex area development scam. There is a possibility that more information about Young’s involvement in this crooked deal will come out in Safavian’s pre-sentence investigation report, which is due for completion soon.
Cool: love the chicken one, and the video.
So, hammerklavier is a klavier you can hammer?
Looking forward to the podcast.
Hey, you can find the spin I’m in here:
http://ilike.com/user/Rayne_T
Also found a freebie that I really enjoy, rather like Sting and Police; check out What If You by Slowhand Row. You can find it in my Recently Played list (view all), or at Garageband.com.
Cujo359 @ 17
Yeah, Odeo got our business specifically for this option being available. Also, if you guys want to leave your own audio comments on the podcast page you can record an audio comment if you have a mic hooked up to your computer right through your browser. Odeo rocks!
I love to listen to Beethoven…
The Spin I’m in - “Do I make you Horny?” edition…
yep, this week I’m all about horns. Nice Brass. the intergalactic umpah sound.
Wild Magnolias - “(somebody got) Soul, Soul, Soul” from the bottomless trove that is New Orleans music.
Spam All-Stars - “Sueltame” - somebody handed me this ep a couple years ago and it dang near knocked my teeth out.
Hypnotic Brass Ensemble - “Baliky Bone” - these cats are the hottest thing on the streets of NYC. They head to Europe next week. Find them.
Fred Wesley & the Horny Horns - “Four Play” 1) melt one stick butter; 2) Pour in mouth.
Earth, Wind and Fire - “Beauty” from their second album. This has one of my favorite horn arrangements of any song.
Fini — Odeo is great, working very nicely!!
Been a real bonus over the last 24 hours, lots of new toys to play with, like Odeo. What a needed short-term break from the pressure.
Okay, off to pick up Kid #2 from school.
Pachacutec @ 24
Thanks Pachacutec! I know, that video is great.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 17

Ooooh thanks. first i thot you meant there was a new post and i could zip over and hit the zero :). fitz a MATH major that explains a lot bwahahahaha. Everybody seems to know my daughter here, she is volunteer schoolteacher at the elementary level. ET alaska ad status=? Over and out.
Donita, you have to tell us what your costume is.
You have to.
I’m thinking about going as Annie Lennox at the end of that video I posted above…
That’s one great video. Off to check out the rest of the podcast.
Donita, congratulations on your first podcast!
TRex @ 34
Ohmigod! Now that’s the spin I’m in (sans gown, of course) which is way my apt looks they way it does. Though anytime a guy dresses in drag, I always ask them if I can have the shoes after they’re done. Not that they are stylish, but 6-ft blondes need all the shoes they can get. Do 60-ft theropods have the same problem?
Donita, I look forward to hearing what you would wear for Halloween.
I went to a Halloween party as a wet t-shirt contest winner last week… I wanted to work some sort of social commentary into the costume but didn’t have time to figure it out.
musical/video tangent: I got a kick out of this comment at the end of yesterday’s Duran Duran thread:
LJ/Aquaria @

The podcast is neat. I can hear Donita’s midwestern accent.
kristinejoy @ 37
Actually, these are the shoes I’m wearing right now. I tend to gravitate to manly footwear. Just in case I have to kick the shit out of somebody.
TRex @ 41
you didn’t buy those online, did you?
I guess the closest thing I’ve got going right now is that, thanks to putting an HDTV tuner in my computer, I’m now able to receive something called “The Tube” or The Tube Music Network. It’s a channel that plays all music videos, with no commercials. It’s basically what MTV should be, at least for those of us who remember what MTV was like twenty years ago.
Check your local listings. Out here in the lesser Seattle area, it’s on channel 22_2, which may have a different number depending how you reckon these new HDTV channels. The way things go in the TV business, it’s certainly not going to be good for much longer.
you didn’t buy those online, did you?
Who, me?
*Looks around*
I don’t know what you’re talking about.
*hides boxes and shipping papers*
Donita, the chicken song made my day — and I logged on to Itunes and ponied up a buck for the pleasure. Life is good!
OT gang, Jan Brown, Charlie Brown’s fantastic wife, has a diary up at kos, if anyone would like to give her a recommend. It’s about her son Jeff going to Iraq for his FOURTH rotation and John Doolittle using the typical Republican ploy: he attacks the Browns as unpatriotic.
Anyway, I really needed that Chicken Payback song today — the video is pricelss!
TRex @ 41
Me too, for the same reason. Of course, I live in San Diego, so if I were to be bashed, it would be by some frat boy in flip-flops.
They look comfortable, as well. :)
TRex @ 44

TRex @ 34
I think you should go as the young Bad Seed.
Totally O/T but not really considering …
My brother in law was working a gig in Detroit yesterday. He was on his way into town and found that the southbound I94 into town (he lives north of Detroit) was shut down. Traffic was already stopped when he approached Mt Clemens (nr Selfridge ANG base). No movement southbound, no traffic coming from the south, either. Twenty min later traffic started flowing again. Later he found out from TV reports that I94 had been shut down both directions, ditto I696 , the east-west route north of Detroit, including all overpasses closed and guarded. The reason? *CHIMPY WAS IN TOWN* to campaign with Mike Bouchard. Raised over half-a-million, according to the Bouchard website. The $1,000-a-plate do was in Warren MI, the “arsenal of Democracy” and home of a big General Dynamics plant which makes M1 Abrams tanks. Lots of jobs. Bouchard is running against Dem incumbent Debbie Stabenow (although she voted for torture, so what’s the beef?) and I94 would have been his route if he came via Selfridge. Did it in reverse to get him out of town a few hours later. My B-in-L says he is not aware of any advance warning re hwy shit-downs. Also that there have been numerous presidential visits to the Detroit area over the decades without the whole damn place being shut down.
Interesting note: What is this with ‘aristocrats’ and roads anyway? My husband’s family left Warsaw late 19th C because the grancestor, coachman to a rich family, refused to run down some peasants and refused who didn’t move fast enough. The family story is that he went home, told his wife to pack up the kids and they left the same night. Headed west toward France, then came to America from there, so the story goes. Landed in Hamtramck, MI “Little Poland”
FunTrivia: Selfridge Field (now Selfridge ANG) was named after Lt. Thomas E. Selfridge, a pioneer aeronautical engineer and the first person to die in a crash of a powered airplane.
They look comfortable, as well. :)
They really are. And they make a great sound on hard floors. You sound like bad business approaching. THOK! THOK! THOK! People turn and look to see what’s coming.
Heh. It’s a TRex!
Cujo359 @ 42
We just got an affiliate here on HDTV channel 29_2 in Indianapolis. That station is brilliant! I love it, it gets much airtime in my house these days. They play videos like Donita’s playlists - varied and ecelectic but always good stuff.
Love Dee-lite, but one of my guilty pleasures from the ’90s is Pure Sugar. They’re Delicious!
TRex @ 16
Another big influence was Leopold Steinway. He’d spend his weekends skeet-shooting on his upstate place, then come back to the factory on Monday morning to complain, “I can’t hear it, make it louder.” And they did.
Fun Beethoven 9 fact:
Early on in the 4th movement there’s a bit of counterpoint with the Freude theme; IIRC it’s bassoons and the strings. It’s the quiet stretch just before all the triangles and cymbals and the football marching band come in. Anyway, if you listen to the counter-melody (which I think the bassoons have), you might recognize it. Schubert stole it for the opening theme of his own “9th” Symphony.
Actually I like the third movement of Beethoven 9 better but I’m an oddball that way. (I also prefer the third movement of the Moonlight Sonata, so sue me.)
All Hail Fini FiniTOOBZ! (aka Joh Padgett) who produced the podcast and despite a couple of technical difficulties, made it work. It will only get better.
I like these songs.
Professor Foland @ 53
In the matter of the People v. Professor Foland, we the jury find you GUILTY of being an oddball. We sentence you to 90 days of Rogers and Hammerstein.
HotFlash — ugh. I could have warned your BIL about the Bush shut-down. Bet that p*ssed off a lot of people, perfect before the election. Cheney’s actually worse; the roads were shut down for 45 f*cking minutes after the man left town during the 2004 election season.
Bouchard may have gotten some $$, but he’s going to need to overcome a lot of bad sentiments about Bush, has a 12-pt deficit in polling against Stabenow.
kristinejoy — thanks for the Pure Sugar, that’s another fun one!
Donita Sparks @ 54
Awwww, shucks [blushes]. Tweren’t nuthin. I had fun with it, despite the technical glitches experienced but hey that’s to be expected first flight out.
Kudos to Donita for the fantastic hosting job on this, she’s not bad for a podcasting virgin, eh? Give her a hand folks, she worked her tail off on this all week and did a great job!
Donita, I LOVE this stuff. But could you provide a little more commentary between songs explaining your choices?
Did anybody read Camille Paglia’s deeply ignorant interview at Salon? Gawd that woman pisses me off. She’s actually saying Drudge got it right on the page scandal. She’s all, “But I love the gays! They’ll fuck in alleys or back rooms or any old place! They live their lives from pickup to pickup! We shouldn’t take that away from them!”
Stupid bitch. And she calls herself an intellectual. I wonder if we could get Grover Norquist to give her a bath.
hey donita!
what a great playlist!!! i love that song by “the 88.”
i have been wanting to see them live for the longest time!!!
you’re show last friday was ROCKIN’!!!!
prostratedragon @ 26
No, it’s a Klavier you play while hammered. Gotta run, off to take the harpsichord in for Friendly Rich’s CD launch… should be lots of fun.
HotFlash @ 63
The klavier has been drinking…not me.
portia.vz @ 60
Yeah it’s a work in progress. Thanks for your comments.
TRex — you really should know better.
Never read Camille Paglia. A sucking waste of time.
And never let Jane catch you shopping on line!
Although given the two sins, I’d taser you for reading that b*tch Paglia; bigger waste of resources than shopping. Have absolutely NO idea why any outlet gives that humanity-hating wench the time of day, particularly Salon. It’s like their lame attempt at fair-and-balanced content.
hammerkavalier
yes, Tom DeLay always was rather haughty and domineering
TRex @ 64
Tom waits for no one
TRex @ 61
I’m going to have to check that out. I have to say I enjoyed the audacity of “Sexual Personae”, but that chick has a serious case of penis-envy.
kristinejoy — this latest bit by Paglia at Salon comes off like a sharp-clawed harpy doing a Cassandra impression, IMO. Ugh.
Cute video, my tweenager is going to LOVE it. But then she’s still recovering from TRex’s “karma hunting” vid. Heh.
FWIW: paglia means straw in Italian
Rayne @ 69
OH I KNOW!!! Until you mentioned it just now I had stopped that song from running through my head like a 5 yr old with scissors for the last week! “Hi there voter, how do you feel? Tired of the same old voting deal?…” DAMN YOU TREEEEEEEEEEX!!!!!!
TRex @ 61
TRex, I did read that and I was shocked. I usually love her. Sexual Personae is one of my favorite books, but this interview really threw me off.
HotFlash @
63
is there a way to fit a virginal and a portativ into the trunk for the gig, HotFlash?
Huh-oh, we broke iLike.com!! Having BIG growing pains there, the place only launched on the 24th and it’s exploding.
But their Help Desk is extremely responsive, never had people like that at any other website. Hope they’ll be able to keep up with the growth!
LindaR @ 73
Her pop-culture takes have always been weak. Remember when she thought Madonna was the peak of Western Civilization?
I think I’m going to write about Camille for tonight’s Late Nite post.
OT - first Christy likened it to Marco Polo. Now Tim Grieve at Salon.con War Room goes to the state fair:
TRex — check out the responsive comments at Salon, too, big hurting in there. 226 deep, last I looked. Ouch. Paglia has a way of hitting on every raw nerve.
TRex @ 77
From your pickup?
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 57
Overruled on appeal. The 3rd Movement of the Moonlight kicks serious butt. It’s one of the few pieces i can still play from memory.
Rayne @ 58
Add to that all the women who had to THROW AWAY their cosmetics because of recent government flight rules. I have seen some very steamed people at airports in the last couple months. Perhaps they, too have had enough.
TRex @ 77
So, why aren’t there any lesbian sex scandals, Camille?
Come on, this is a softball, people. Anyone?
I’m sure she would give the obvious answer.
Because lesbians don’t have sex.
egregious @ 80
Well I was referring to his preference for the 3rd movement of Ludwig Van’s 9th, not the Moonlight Sonata. From the 3rd movement of the 9th I just don’t experience the soul stirring feeling I get from the 4th movement of the 9th. But taste being what it is, I can understand someone preferring the 3rd movement.
Oooh! The podcast drowned out the beeper on my oven and I nearly burned the chocolate chip cookies. Next batch will not be so, ah, crisp. Anyone?
kristinejoy @ 83
No little soldiers, duh. H/T the General.
OT - another take on the Berkeley discussion panel last night:
Donita
i just bought the chiken song. ;-) You’re podcast is going to contagious!
Thanks Firedoglake!
LOL jeffreyw, same here, I’m baking choc chip cookies and german choc cookies, the choc chips ones are a tad crisp from listening to the music. Great first podcast Donita and Fini, I’m really enjoying it.
*Waving to everyone*
Fini–you are quite right.
Starting fresh here to avoid ziggurat collapse.
Hope things are ok with you and your family. Thanks for your response the other day, I picked it up much later. Between the mom stuff, Russia stuff, and oh yea the elections, it’s been a wee bit busy.
From CNN.com:
“WASHINGTON (AP) — The Republican National Committee said Thursday it won’t run any television ads in Ohio on behalf of Sen. Mike DeWine during the final week of the campaign.”
Or, as the late great Freddie Mercury would say, “Another one bites the dust.”
Christy - here’s a headline I found on Raw Story that apparently pertains to David Safavian:
Ex-Bush official receives 18 month sentence: Developing…
jeffreyw @ 85
It is my goal to burn a batch of cookies for every memeber of the Firedoglake community. One down……
And this from Raw:
“A former Bush administration official received an 18 month prison sentence for obstructing justice in connection with the convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff influence-peddling scandal, Reuters is reporting.
David Safavian, 39, who resigned from his job last year on the same day that the criminal complaint was signed, once worked at the General Services Administration and the White House budget office.”
Nope, 2 down:

The family and I are doing ok so far. I had a lot longer time to deal with my mother’s impending passing than some of my family who were in denial about how well they thought she was doing. The holidays will be a new challenge for all of us though. If we can make it through the holidays together without serious infighting it will be ok.
It has been a seriously busy time, but I’m glad I could be of help. Feel free to contact me anytime.
Oh, if anyone is interested be sure to check out the Monticello blog I started. This is where I am doing my political thing, and I am gonna podcast live on election day every hour on the hour between 6-11pm with vote count updates.
Shez! burning cookies in our honor, how cool! I love german chocolate but have never had german chocoloate chip cookies. I’m gonna have to explore this sometime.
