It indeed would be interesting if memory could effect [sic] past conversations. I’m sure Karl Rove believes it can. He’s constantly trying to change history that way.

There were several moments when Loftus was completely caught off guard by Fitzgerald, creating some very awkward silences in the courtroom.

One of those moments came when Loftus insisted that she had never met Fitzgerald. He then reminded her that he had cross-examined her before, when she was an expert defense witness and he was a prosecutor in the U.S. attorney’s office in New York.

Apparently, Fitzgerald picked up on that and took her apart on the stand.

Mickey, I don’t know all the details about how Loftus’ work on “false memories” may have been misused.

But my impression from the Post article is that what Fitzgerald nailed her on was overstating a very particular point in her testimony Thursday about jurors’ impressions of witnesses’ memories.

The article also mentioned that he cited what sounded like some contradictory points in some of her work. But I’m assuming it was in particular about her work on jurors, not about the issues of “recovered memory” produced under hynosis.

Okay, which one of you rabble-rousers is responsible for this sub-entry under Elizabeth Loftus at Wikipedia?

Testimony in Scooter Libby Trial

On Thursday, October 26, 2006, Loftus was called as the first defense witness in a pretrial hearing in the federal perjury case case against I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby. Under cross-examination by prosecutor Patrick J. Fitzgerald, Loftus struggled to defend the scientific basis of her methodology, amid apparent contradictions between her testimony and her work, and internal contradictions within her work. Loftus also insisted that she had never met Fitzgerald previously: however Fitzgerald reminded her that he had cross-examined her before in another case in which she was an expert defense witness. And while you’re looking at the transcript, look up Elizabeth F. Loftus. She’s the “False Memory Syndrome” expert who discredits the memories of those claiming childhood sexual abuse. I expect she’s been right a lot, but she’s been way wrong lots of times too. If you read about her, her bias leaps from her words. She quit the American Psychological Association, claiming they’d gotten away from “science.” Fitz helped show that she’s taken a trip away herself. Long overdue for Dr. Loftus.

Tell me about it! I can’t tell you the joy it gives me that Fitz ripped her research. She also gets a lot of money testifying on the unreliability of eyewitness testimony. Her ego is has alwasy been larger than her effect sizes.
