In an interview with ABC News broadcast on Sunday, President Bush gamely suggested that “we’ve never been ’stay the course’” when it comes to Iraq.

and what followed is a great indication of what’s so crazy about Washington, DC these days. Bush is, as we’ve sometimes observed, not the most comfortable public speaker, particularly when he’s talking off the cuff. The man speaks in macros. You can tell just by listening to him that he has certain phrases down, and he’ll use them over and over. If he’s said a phrase once, he’s probably said it a hundred times. The man has trouble finding new combinations of nouns, verbs, and modifiers. He makes Homer Simpson sound like a voice-over artist.

So, what’s crazy is that Tony Snow thought saying that Bush only said that eight times that they could find would fly with anyone. What’s even crazier is how few in the “MSM” have called him on it. Keith Olbermann did a good job of it, of course, but I don’t think anyone else did, even PBS. This was such an obvious opening that you’d think that even the least enterprising journalists would have jumped on it and found, oh, say a couple of dozen quotes in their vaults. But no, it’s just KO and the fever swamp.

That’s the one that doesn’t belong, of course, but part of the reason is that he isn’t talking about “bloggers” as in plural. He’s talking about whoever opened the heyjohn.org site that started all this stuff about the fortune Kerry is supposedly sitting on, and then folded it up a couple of days later. No one has ever claimed responsibility for this site. It’s one thing to stay anonymous. It’s quite another to just crap on someone and then disappear. Whoever did that were justly deserving to be called cowards.

Christy — Howard Kurtz did another of his “they all do it” columns in which he decries all the mudslinging ads. He cites three Repub ads and just to show “they all do it,” the lone Dem example he uses is the Kerry aide calling bloggers “cowards.”
