When all you have is crap to sell, you shovel it out by the bucketful, according to the WaPo:
On the brink of what could be a power-shifting election, it is kitchen-sink time: Desperate candidates are throwing everything. While negative campaigning is a tradition in American politics, this year's version in many races has an eccentric shade, filled with allegations of moral bankruptcy and sexual perversion.
At the same time, the growth of "independent expenditures" by national parties and other groups has allowed candidates to distance themselves from distasteful attacks on their opponents, while blogs and YouTube have provided free distribution networks for eye-catching hatchet jobs….
The result has been a carnival of ugly, especially on the GOP side, where operatives are trying to counter what polls show is a hostile political environment by casting opponents as fatally flawed characters. The National Republican Campaign Committee is spending more than 90 percent of its advertising budget on negative ads, according to GOP operatives, and the rest of the party seems to be following suit….
The goal on both sides seems to be to depress the voter turnout of the other side — and while Democrats are able to raise issues such as corruption, bribery, multiple felony pleas and convictions, war profiteering, rubber stamping and failure to defend the Constitution…the GOP is reduced to showing scantily clad white women asking a black Senatorial candidate to call them in a Southern wink and nod to the "good ole boy" voting block.
What a mess.
Which is why I am so proud that we have been able to send a little joy in the form of a great song and a funny YouTube ad around the internet — and, in some cases, to districts via our Blue America PAC. The brilliant "Have You Had Enough?" campaign got some good press, and I wanted to share it with everyone this morning (via Howie).
The local paper in Chris Carney's district did a story on our Blue America efforts, and the effects that You Tube and other internet efforts have had on the Carney campaign, and others around Pennsylvania. I thought this bit, from the Scranton Times-Tribune, was especially good:
Mr. Klein, the former president of Reprise Records, the famed record label founded by Frank Sinatra, organized an online video featuring the swing-rock band and the jazz-pop singer and titled it “Have You Had Enough?” — as in “Have you had enough of Don Sherwood?”
They put it on YouTube, once the popular Internet home of amateur recordings and clips of sitcoms, but increasingly the host of political commercials, gaffes and clips for the computer-savvy.
The video would hold its own against highly polished commercials beaming from local television screens these days as the election approaches, but it will never reach local living rooms unless televisions are hooked up to the Web.
An online blog community, of which Mr. Klein is a part, created it….
You guys did this. This awesome song is going to be hummed and whistled all the way to the ballot box by a whole lot of voters all over this nation of ours — and we were able to get it on the radio and on YouTube because we have all pitched in together to make it happen. Fromt he initial call between Howie and TommyYum, all the way to today, this has been a tidal wave of effort from folks here at FDL and at DownWithTyranny and Crooks & Liars, and I cannot thank everyone enough.
If we had done nothing this election cycle but this one project, I'd be as happy as I could be. This is truly the best of grassroots activism — seeing a need, figuring out a way to fill it, and doing the work necessary to get the job done instead of sitting around and waiting for someone else to do it. Amazing work, gang. Absolutely amazing work. Standing O for everyone involved on this — you've all earned a big round of applause.
And the best part of the whole thing? How can you not smile and enjoy the thought of voting for a progressive candidate after you hear and see something like this:
It's Friday. What are you doing this weekend to help to get out our vote? Eleven days and counting…no time to stop until we cross the finish line. And yes, I have had more than enough. It is time for change, for accountability, and for an avalanche of votes for Democratic candidates across the country. But we don't get any of that if we don't get our voters to the polls and voting in droves.
Now let's get to work…
UPDATE: I meant to add this in — today is the last day on Chris Bowers' push for the Use It Or Lose It campaign. Do you know where your elected representatives stand on this? If not, please take a peek and make some phone calls! And as Jane said last night, we're trying to get the "Had Enough?" ad in one more district, so if you have a fiver to spare, we'd sure appreciate any donations. And if you don't have a fiver to spare — please consider making some GOTV calls or canvassing this weekend instead. Every little bit helps!

VA GOVERNORS to SPEAK at JIM WEBB RALLY
Real Virginians for Jim Webb
A Diverse Grassroots Coalition Event to Support Jim Webb
Governors Tim Kaine and Mark Warner will join Democratic Senate candidate Jim Webb at a “Get Out The Vote” rally Saturday at Poe Middle School in Annandale at 1 pm. Congressman Jim Moran and Congressional candidates Judy Feder and Andrew Hurst will also speak.
The event is unique because it was proposed, planned and will be largely executed by volunteers rather than paid staff. The volunteer organizers are members of a group called “Real Virginians for Webb” (RVFW). RVFW was formed shortly after Sen. George Allen’s infamous “Macaca” statements, implying that the “real world of Virginia” excludes minorities and embraces prejudice. Shared indignation among Webb volunteers working in various ethnic outreach programs inspired them to unite their separate efforts under one banner.
The notion that we are all “real Virginians” caught on with non-ethnic volunteers as well. Unlike George Allen’s “Ethnic Rally,” RVFW’s “Get Out The Vote” rally is intended for Virginians of all backgrounds. Organizers of RVFW include many Caucasians, and the group stresses that this rally is not for minorities only. As organizer Jan Mueller explained: “This movement is about uniting people. It’s for all Virginians, and all Americans who believe that the values that we have in common are greater than our differences.”
Speakers:
Senate Candidate Jim Webb
Governor Tim Kaine
Governor Mark Warner
Congressman Jim Moran
Congressional Candidate Judy Feder
Congressional Candidate Andrew Hurst
Location:
Poe Middle School
7000 Cindy Lane Annandale, VA

One of the sites that I enjoy visiting, has it’s fair share of tin-foil hat wearers, so I have to pick and choose the information that I share with other sites.
Interestingly enough, this site (which has several investigators from inside the DOJ who post regularly), have been speaking of a false flag operation that includes sinking a CARRIER, for God’s sake, in the Persian Gulf.
I have never felt hate before, but I do believe the cabal in chiefs have finally stirred that emotion out of me. Telling people that they sicken me does not adequately describe what I’m feeling.
Son’s of bitches.

And there was a front page article in the Waterbury paper about YouTube and it mention this ad! What a great lead in to the arrival of the FDL show in CT!

Responding to Christy from the previous thread, regarding: All hands on deck for GOTV!
“Which shows you why we’ve been pushing GOTV efforts and everything else — there is a whole lot of accountability at stake in this election. And we need every hand on deck to make sure we get it.”
Unfortunately, I’m a Canuck, otherwise I’d be neck deep in GOTV myself.
My interest in these proceedings however is somewhat vicariously global, since our own current government up here in Canada, is a puppet satellite to the NeoCon GOP.
Personally, my own fears of the NeoCons extend to their efforts at consolidating their power through a ‘fortress america’ approach to the GWOT.
My outrage over the Iraq war, 9/11, and the GWOT, and anxiety that Canada might be subjected to some sort of false flag attack to bolster ‘international support’ for the Imperial ambitions, has been keeping me up at night for some time now.
Images of Darth Cheney slavering and gloating the phrase “We’re talking Mass Death somewhere in North American here.” have been haunting me for weeks.
I’ve been feeling stuck with quietly cheering on the sidelines through much of the GOTV campaign. On U.S. regional electoral issues, I’m kind of an outsider.

That last question is especially important, because Wednesday morning, November 8, a lot of pundits/talking heads are going to be competing for attention to try to define what it all means. The Dems have so far not put a defining theme on the election. There are two possibilities:
1. The Dems could say, “this is a referendum on the policies and competence of the Bush Administration and Republican leadership.” It’s like a no-confidence vote. If you agree with the way the country is being governed by the ruling Republicann party, then vote one way; if you disagree with that, then vote for Dems. This may be the best frame we can hope for, and if so, we should start repeating it.
2. The Dems could also say, this election is not just about rejecting the Bush/Republican polices but a reaffirmation of Democratic principles: reverence for the rule of law and Constitutional principles of checks and balances and individual rights over unchecked governmental power; etc — and lay out something that the Dems could all a “mandate.” This is my preference, but I don’t see a party leadership capable of articulating that.
The point is that we need to start now defining what our hoped-for victory (whatever it is) means — and how it should be described by the media.
But if you don’t vote Republican, flying monkeys will steal your babies and make them gay. And if you disparage the president, Osama will chicken dance in the Oval Office.

I think it was Lakoff who came up with a zinger on this issue. Something about how an eventual Dem victory would play out in the media. Instead of “how will the Dems manage to be effective with their new majority”, based on all the institutional advantages that the Repups have, it should be “how can the Republican party survive intact?”. that’s a poor paraphrase, but you get the picture.

Christy,
I got up early to change over to winter tires on my Golf TDI and get ready to bring my wife’s Subaru into the tire shop – which will be crowded today (!!), whew. I turn 60 in a week. Tires used to be light exercise, not a major piece of work.
Then – realizing the friggin’ clock is ticking on getting the word out that Diane Benson has closed the gap on Don Young from 30 points behind to 9 points down in 38 days in the best polls available in Alaska, I took the half hour I don’t have to read all of your Libby post below. WOW!
“Yes, that’s right, it was testimony about maggots.” What a treasure reading that story was.
Going in to Benson HQ early this afternoon to organize next week’s “radio storm,” a guerrilla/educational activity which I can’t describe until it is over. Then I’ll change to tux for the first of seven concerts I’ll be in over the next few days.
Here a good diary about Webb’s appearance on Wapoo radio this morning and the interview and his smackdown of the salacious allegations.

I’ve just read on a couple of sites that the Democratic lead among likely voters is higher than among registered voters (18 or 19 points vs. 11). This might be a dumb question, but do we know for a fact, in the Quinnipiac poll on CT Senate race for example, if likely voters are being reported or registered voters? If poll numbers reported are taken from the registered group, shouldn’t Liebercrap’s numbers be a little skewed?

Yesterday afternoon’s Diane Benson press release:
Benson closes gap to only 9 points
Anchorage – On the heels of a 14 point gain in just three weeks, the Diane Benson for Congress
campaign completed a new poll based on the methodology of Craciun’s October 15th poll.
A poll conducted by Hays Research Group on October 24 – 25, 2006 of 400 registered voters who are more likely to vote in the upcoming election. The poll contains a five point margin of error.
Don Young 43%
Diane Benson 34%
Other Candidates 7%
Undecided 15%
Refused to Answer 2%
“This is another great step for this campaign”, states Kris J. Pierce, Campaign Manager for the Diane Benson campaign.
“This shows that we are reaching out to the voters of this state. We are gaining and are closer than any other Democrat since John Devens, former Mayor of Valdez in 1990.”
The poll showed that Rep. Young lost nine points to the Undecided in just the last week since the Craciun poll. The results also showed seven points for third party candidates. Benson received the endorsement of Alexander Crawford on the KAKM “Runnings” program on Wednesday night. Crawford is the Libertarian Party candidate for Congress.
“We welcome all voters of all political parties that feel that our federal government and the focus of the current representative is not in the best interest of Alaska”, continued Pierce.

Angry reporters. YAY.

Water-carrier: Cheney opposed to Snow-boarding
Man, is it me, or are GOP candidates around the country just hoping the entire Bush Administration disappears for the next 11 days and doesn’t speak to anyone? Tony Snow is being a patronizing ass, and the press is having none of it this morning. Holden is going to have a field day with this one…hehehehehe
Female reporter (Ann Compton) just said the veep is not perfect, he did curse Leahy on the senate floor and did shoot his friend in the face!
LOLOLOL
Completely agree.
The latest pollster.com poll has Lieberman4Lieberman at 49. Anytime an incumbent is below 50, they are in trouble. Ned’s behind, I don’t mean to diminish the challenge, but this ain’t over. Another thing Lieberman4Lieberman can’t count on is GOTV from the Democratic party. Lieberman4Lieberman wouldn’t endorse the three Democratic candidates for the House. GOP leads in all three races, but narrowly. I can’t imagine those House candidates, Courtney, Farrell, and Murphy will allow their GOTV resources to be used for Lieberman4Lieberman.
I’m not from CT, certainly willing to defer to others who know the situation there better than I do.
No day is complete without news from Halliburton.
Halliburton Crookery
You know, the more I think about it, the more I think that Tony Snow should just keep right on insisting that Dick Cheney was talking about some sort of ludicrous game of “Marco Polo” between American interrogators and terrorism suspects instead of waterboarding…because it makes him sound like even more of an ass. Nothing like showing yourself and the Bush Administration for the scam artists they really are…at 11 days and counting before the election.
Let’s see, this week we’ve had a Mr. Pissy presser, Rummy stomping out of a presser, the Veep okaying waterboarding on the radio, and the whole of the Administration — including the President — trying to stand up and say that they never did say “stay the course” when their own website says they did at least 160 times and counting. I say — bravo! Keep it up! *g*
When asked about the Pres. support for civil unions, he says he doesn’t know….
Snow: “I’m incompetent”
Why, I agree!
The new Lamont ad is brilliant.
Is that only playing on the website or will that make it on TV?
re: snow’s press briefing…
snow is dancing around whether cheney refers to use of waterboarding during radio interview. snow says that he nor the vp will talk about techniques, and that the vp was not talking about waterboarding, but that “we do not torture”.
an interesting exchange was when a reporter stated that bush DID refer to techniques that were unacceptable when he was referring the abu ghraib situation. later someone else asked if cheney considered waterboarding as torture- and snow dodged it by saying he did not talk about techniques…
so by inference, since banned techniques can be discussed, and waterboarding cannot be discussed, and the adminstration does not condone torture, then the administration does not consider waterboarding as torture…
i think for any thinking american, that’s a no brainer, but i wish the white house press corp could corner that slippery bastard
Christy Hardin Smith @ 57

Well done.
While we’re assailing the weaknesses of the WH Press Corp, I wish they’d ask, “if we’re ‘a nation at war,’ , why hasn’t the WH reinstituted the draft?”
“We do not talk about techniques.”
That screams for the question: “Why not, if you say it is all within the law?”
Note to MSNBC: please discourage Rita Cosby from wearing yellow. Thank you.
“We do not talk about techniques.”
It implies al-qaeda can “prepare” their “soldiers” for drowning. I’d like to know how al-qaeda does that.
Maybe some of the frustration the reporters showed today toward Tony will show up in their reporting. Nah, probably not.
i hear that al qaeda has a fingernail pulling contraption machine to prepare the jihadists for that technique… they can put the waterboarding training washboard next to that…

Well, the Bush/Rove strategy was to focus voters’ attention on terrorism, to scare the voters, so it’s logical that they’ve made themsevles out to be as scary as possible. Someone misread the memo?
Just a quick stop:
I’m phone banking for Linda Stender in NJ-07 tonight [and bringing goodies for the volunteers–thanks for the suggestion CHS]. Mr. NJP will be at a special peace group meeting, getting up to speed on Iran issues.
I’ve been calling NJ congressmen as part of Use It or Lose It, but have not had much success. I checked over at MyDD, and only Frank Pallone [my congressman, in NJ-07] has ponied up anything–a measly $25K, and he’s got a warchest of more than $2.3 million. I’ll give his campaign office another call this afternoon. I’ve had no luck reaching Donald Payne’s office [NJ-10]–he has no opponent in the race, so my guess is nobody’s in the office, since they don’t have to do anything at all. I also tried talking to Rush Holt’s office, and they talked a good game about how many campaign appearances, but he hasn’t released any new cash. Same for Rob Andrews [NJ-01 or -02, can’t remember, right now]. There’s going to be a rough race for Senate here in 2008, and all those jockeys are getting into position. Money in hand now is money they won’t have to raise then. I understand what they’re doing, and my pitch in the phone calls I make is that with the toobz, we can really see what they’re doing. Those who give now will be rewarded with progressive support in 2008.
Catch you at the ‘Lake tomorrow morning.
PS Punaise had a great post in the Late Nite thread. He went to the wonky talk-fest with Lakeoff and Grand Master Kos et al last night, and gave a good summary there.

That’s the one that doesn’t belong, of course, but part of the reason is that he isn’t talking about “bloggers” as in plural. He’s talking about whoever opened the heyjohn.org site that started all this stuff about the fortune Kerry is supposedly sitting on, and then folded it up a couple of days later. No one has ever claimed responsibility for this site. It’s one thing to stay anonymous. It’s quite another to just crap on someone and then disappear. Whoever did that were justly deserving to be called cowards.
Cujo, Christy — I agree. Two cowards here; the anony blogger and Kurtz.

Thanks, Christy. This paragraph:
and what followed is a great indication of what’s so crazy about Washington, DC these days. Bush is, as we’ve sometimes observed, not the most comfortable public speaker, particularly when he’s talking off the cuff. The man speaks in macros. You can tell just by listening to him that he has certain phrases down, and he’ll use them over and over. If he’s said a phrase once, he’s probably said it a hundred times. The man has trouble finding new combinations of nouns, verbs, and modifiers. He makes Homer Simpson sound like a voice-over artist.
So, what’s crazy is that Tony Snow thought saying that Bush only said that eight times that they could find would fly with anyone. What’s even crazier is how few in the “MSM” have called him on it. Keith Olbermann did a good job of it, of course, but I don’t think anyone else did, even PBS. This was such an obvious opening that you’d think that even the least enterprising journalists would have jumped on it and found, oh, say a couple of dozen quotes in their vaults. But no, it’s just KO and the fever swamp.

It is fascinating. 1 in 10 answer on a Fri afternoon (should have waited til the pm!); it is great to get those folks who “havent’ made up their minds” or who are solidly DEMS. A few “fuck yous” and one “My son is an Iraq vet and i’ll vote for George, thank you very much.”
Except, George aint’ runnin’.
