[Please give a big FDL welcome to Randy. As always, with our Blue America threads, please stay on topic and be polite. Welcome Randy -- chatting today as a candidate, as well as an FDL reader! We're focusing on a local race today to emphasize how important all these races are, up and down the ticket, and hoping some of our other readers will take a page from Randy's book and think about running in the future, or at least doing some work on local races. Every little bit helps! -- CHS]
Unless you live in a tiny northeast corner of Wisconsin west of Marinette (basically the Green Bay northern suburbs), chances are the only way you know Randy Koehn is as "noonan," his Firedoglake blogger sign-on. Lately though, until this afternoon, he hasn't been on Firedoglake as much.
That's because he's knocked on 8,000 doors in the last few months. That's a lot of doors. And he's been going to an awful lot of Friday night football games.
You see, blogger noonan/Randy Koehn is also the progressive Democrat running for seat being vacated by Assembly Speaker John Gard, Wisconsin's 89th Assembly District. Gard, virtually always referred to as "the Tom DeLay of Wisconsin politics," is trying to move up to the congressional seat being vacated by right wing rubber stamp Mark Green so he can pursue his futile but messy attempt to become Governor.
Wisconsin Democrats need to wrest about a dozen seats from the Republicans in order to prevent them from gerrymandering the state in 2010. Randy's race for the open Gard seat is the tip of the arrow in that crucial battle. He won a tough primary against a well-known middle-of-the-road Democrat and now he's facing an extreme right wing nutjob named John Nygren.
Randy grew up in the district. In fact, now he's a history teacher, teaching in the same classroom he studied history in when he was a kid!
Until this spring he was an independent but he registered as a Democrat so he could run for Assembly and bring progressive ideas and solutions to the fore there. He feels blogging has made him a much better — and much better-informed candidate — although his reactionary opponent, an insurance salesman, a Republican Party county chairman and a serial spousal abuser, never stops deriding him as "an extremist blogger," whatever that is.
I have a friend, Gil, in a small town in the western part of the district, in a town called Puluski. He grew up there and he doesn't know Randy. He has known Nygren for years.
"He's a real Eddie Haskell type," he told me last night, "the kind of guy that gives you the creeps…comes over to your house and steals a rare stamp out of your stamp album when you're in the bathroom."
Gil has already made up his mind to vote against Nygren before I called to get his lay of the land.
When someone like Randy says "We need to build our economy from the bottom up, with a strong foundation, not wait for money to trickle down," that may sound like music to progressives' ears. To the wingnuts, it sounds like communism or atheism or gayness or terrorism…or whatever they hate this year.
When Randy started his race, he had a wide range of progressive issues he was running on — from "easing the property tax burden, equalizing school funding throughout the state, and bringing high paying jobs to the area" to helping to solve the medical care breakdown that middle and working class folks in his district are so burdened by:
"Now," he told me, "I don't get much further than talking about affordable medical care. That's the #1 issue, the issue on everyone's mind I meet. I'm not meeting anyone who wants to discuss the GOP talking points, 'Gays, Guns and Abortions;' everyone wants to know what I plan to do about affordable health care."
And Randy has a plan — one that provides everyone with health care and drives the right-wingers crazy, especially right-wingers like Nygren who supports risk pools (that's what insurance agents do) and Bush's thoroughly discredited health savings accounts.
Endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters, the AFLCIO, SEIU, AFSCME, and Planned Parenthood, Randy has to face a mass media owned lock stock and barrel by partisan Republicans. They didn't even cover the one candidate forum Nygren agreed to do. Why bother? They already know who they're supporting regardless of what the candidates say.
Up against that Randy's got a legion of his former students and they're all over his My Space page and all over the district.
Randy has put a lot of the money he's managed to collect into hundreds of yard signs and into fliers that his volunteers are passing out every weekend. He also put a TV ad together. He's been able to run the TV ad on cable networks in the area. Last night it was on during The Daily Show. I'm thinking we could significantly help Randy out with his race.
Take look at the ad. It only costs $14 to run on the local cable system. I bet a lot of us can find $14 to get someone from our own community and who believes in the same values and principles we believe in to be able to run the ad on TV. We added Randy to our BlueAmerica ActBlue page to make it easy. (He's right between two of our favorite candidates, John Laesch and Larry Kissell. Let's show him the kind of love we've shown them.)

Good luck, Randy!
Noonan! We’ve missed you — but it sure is good to have you back around under these circumstances. And huge thanks, as always, to Howie for such a great introduction!
Howdy everybody, and since no one else has said it yet: FITZ!
Welcome (back) to Firedoglake, Randy
Noonan?
Oh, I thought someone said “Hello, NEWMAN!”
Hi firedogs and Howie, and welcome, Randy.
How important is the national anti-GOP tenor in your Assembly race? Will you get votes because of Foley and Hastert and Cheney and Bush and the rest of the crooks?
[edited by CHS: As always in Blue America threads, please keep the discussion on topic. If you have something off topic to discuss, please do so in the prior thread. Thanks!]
How goes the race thus far, Randy (wow, that feels weird to type, Noonan…)? Sure hope we can help you out with some yard signs and mailer money and ad assistance. The GOP has been focused for years on local races — which is exactly how we got into the gerrymandered fix we are in at the moment. We Dems need to even things out, and fast. Folks like you are making a HUGE difference for all the rest of us, one election at a time.
hey Randy/Noonan –
Good to see someone walking the walk. Literally.
Sent you 2 ads worth of spare change, and wish you all the best in the election.
Can you co-ordinate with some of the bigger Dem candidates in Wisconsin who have campaigns in your area for last-minute canvassing/lit drops?
Welcome back, friend!!!
You are my hero.
Howie Klein @

I think it’s highly important. As I’ve been campaigning in Gil’s home town, which is highly Republican, people there are dissatisfied and disaffected with their party and willing to listen to a voice of change and reason.
Not only are they disgusted with “their party” they are very happy to listen to a Progressive, especially after they hear my message.
Good Luck! take some names, kick some ass!
Ruby Tuesday @ 10
Thanks!
Well, the Kagen campaign is about the only other game in town. That race is very dirty, as is the governor’s race. Lots of mud being slung around and it seems like the ‘big boys’ want to duke it out through commercials.
Other local candidates are hoping to ride along on my coat-tails and organization to do lit drops with me. We’ve run one drop every weekend this month, and we’re getting more volunteers each time.
Green Bay is the big media market here, but local cable is affordable. That’s way out of my price range, but the local cable market is cheaper than radio and hits several thousand people per dollar invested. Lit, doors and this ad are my big push as we count down to Election Day.
I tried to emphasize it in the intro, but I want to make sure that everyone understands that the TV ad in the link can be run on local Wisconsin cable tv for $14. Every $14 we give Randy, that’s another time he gets his message out. I think it’s an incredible investment.
GOOD LucK! TAKE SOME NAMES…KICK SOME ASS!
Pachacutec @ 11
Thanks Pach! You’re making me blush. :)
The information you folks talk about here make me a stronger candidate.
Hi Howie and Noonan!
I was happy to donate, Noonan…my mom grew up in Milwaukee, and my parents met at Marquette.
Noonan @ 14
Oh. Yeah, you don’t want to get bogged down in the mud. Good to know the local candidates in entry-level races are banding together. Hope everybody’s got a new set of gel sole inserts.
I do think this is a great investment. I like the practice of breaking down some of these costs so we know what we’re underwriting. Some candidates/orgs always seem to want to ask me for contributions of $100/250, and my reaction is usually ‘are you out of your frackin’ mind?’ but buying one cable ad, or one 15 second radio spot in a small market is something I can handle. I can’t carry a bunch of orgs on the cash in my wallet, but I can hand someone willing to fight another stone for their sling.
Good luck and work hard!
As a teacher (math, science, English) in a small, rural, public high school, in a very red state (though this was not always thus) I get a good deal of negative feedback from outside the school setting concerning the profession. Do you in your state see this? And would you care to comment on how best to counter the negative misinformation generated toward teachers by the ‘right’?
Christy Hardin Smith @ 9
Exactly. They’ve managed to push out most of the moderate Republicans from here in the past few elections, and any County race is decided by the Republican primary. We’re hoping my campaign will bring some of my supporters ‘out of the closet’ and show their blue roots next time around.
Howie,
The Abramoff article you posted at downwithtyranny yesterday is close to being a bombshell! What I’d give to be looking over Jack’s shoulder as he sits at his cellblock desk. I’ve done a compilation of all the new material on Don Young that has come out within the past two weeks and sent it to you.
I’ve also sent out your comment “FBI insiders, or at least those with inside info from FBI employees familiar with the Abramoff case, are betting that almost instant indictments are looming for Alaska’s Don Young, Florida’s Tom Feeney, John Doolittle, Jerry Lewis, Duncan Hunter, Ken Calvert and Dirty Dick Pombo of the Golden State and Phil English and Don Sherwood of Pennsylvania, as well as for former GOP Crime Boss Tom DeLay” to every news outlet in Alaska – and a few others.
Thanks, again and again, Howie…
Hey, Noonan. Great to see you around here under these circumstances. Thanks for running a great progressive race and representing for the blogosphere.
Sending 3 cable ads, with a touch for ActBlue. Get him!
Oklahoma kiddo @ 20
My opponent’s campaign is basically based upon bashing teachers, even though his wife is a teacher.
If you have time, you can search back a month or two to find more examples. Needless to say, we disagree on what the facts are, which makes it difficult.
As far as how to counter the Right – we’re struggling with that ourselves. Build strong bonds with parents and your community leaders, if you can. Just like voters have low approval ratings for Congress, but return their local incumbent time and again, you can build “our school isn’t like that” if you reach out.
Noonan, what made you decide to run?
Just sent you some $$. John Laesch, too.
You’ve been missed around the Lake and I’m pleased to help you buy a few more ads.
Randy:
You go! I’m down in Madison and, to be honest, I’ve only paid attention to the Gard-Kagen race because I hate Gard so much and don’t want him to get Mark Green’s seat (he’s running for Gov against Dem Jim Doyle).
Wisconsin insider joke: So Randy, will you be living up nort’ or in Sun Prairie? :) *evil grin*
(To all FDLers, Gard “maintained a home” in Peshtigo, his district, but lived full time in Sun Prairie, just north of Madison. And of course collected per diems for “travel and lodging”…typical repug ethics.
I’m donating too…best, best of luck.
Suzanne @

Frustration. The famous quote “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore!”
We haven’t been given a realistic choice here when Gard was running. I sat on interview committees and couldn’t believe some of the people there were actually running.
My wife and I were involved in the Kerry campaign back in ‘04 – she was the Vets for Kerry coordinator (USAF) and I was a ward captain. We saw the good and the bad about how to run a campaign, made strong connections with people throughout the area, and saw just how abused this area was by the area Republicans.
Finally, people in this area asked me to run.
Noonan @ 4
LOL Well, wudayaknow! Best of luck, Noonan!
Okay, who’s Bill Clinton posting as here? And Keith Olbermann? ; )
we need teachers in state legislatures, and nurses, and plumbers, and day care workers too. Working people, not just lawyers and small business owners. People who have seen the effects that Republican rule has had on our schools, our medical care system, our infrastructure, manufacturing and technical industries.
Hope we can buy you few dozen ads and a couple of thousand flyers by tonight.
When it comes to fishing for decent, honest, forthright American Patriots – there’s not a better “hole” than Firedoglake!
I took a minute with Siun last night to marvel at the wealth of riches we have in our little community. Some awesome folks, including you, Noonan.
Go here to help Noonan buy more cable ads. Such a bargain, at only $14/per!
Meant to add that my contribution is in honor of one of my brothers, a high school biology teacher in a town near Boulder, CO, a great guy and a great teacher.

Youse guys! Fer shure, I’ll be stayin’ by da Yoopers, eh?
People actually ask me if I’ll be moving after the election!
Noonan @ 2:59 pm (#30)
That’s the best reason I can think of. Good luck with the campaign and give ‘em whatfor.
Noonan at 35
People actually ask me if I’ll be moving after the election!
That’s really, really sad actually…
On a happier front, I just got back from the Blue America page and set some commercials your way…
The Repugs were all licking their chops thinking they could move up the ladder– Green from Congress to the governorship, Gard from the Assembly to Congress and that Nygren kook from being head of the county Repugs to an Assembly seat. Now it looks like Green and Gard are both going to be searching for jobs in the private sector and I sure hope we can help you send Eddie Hasell back to where he belongs too. I can barely believe it’s only $14 to put that TV spot on the air! (And in case anyone is wondering how to get it on the air: here ya go.)

Like I posted the other day (maybe my last post before tonight?) I’ll be sending out thank yous in the next week. When I’m not posting I’m writing thank yous tonight :) writers’ cramp keeps carpal tunnel away!
Howie Klein @ 38
Monday Night Football airtime is $150 (which still is pretty cheap compared to what we’d pay if the Packers are on! :) I was really shocked when we saw the pricing lists myself.
I think sometimes we forget (me included) how important it is to get progressives to run for the state assembly/senate seats. If we can’t get boots on the ground at these levels, it will be almost impossible for our message to be communicated to the “everyday” voter who’s not a complete idealogue and isn’t addicted to national politics like we are…
Do you have a consultant from the Dem Party available to you? Do they tell you how many ads on cable wins you an election? Or how many ads on cable equals an ad on Monday Night Football?
martha @
41
Exactly! That’s why the Progressive groups around the country are starting to pay more attention to races like mine. As someone mentioned above, even school board races are important. Progressive voices for change can counter the MSM at the local level and lay the groundwork for national change. That’s how the Revolution of’94 took place.
Noonan @ 40
That is really affordable – $150 bucks might get you a :60-second spot, running 8p-midnight on some of the larger market radio stations right now. Inventory is tight and the remaining avails are priced accordingly.
PS: 8p-midnight is NOT a great time to be on radio air, everyone is watching TV then…
Howie Klein @ 42
I don’t have one at my beck and call right now – but the ad is designed to be carried in bars with the sound down and reach that demographic as well.
Drive by …
Hey! That’s so kewl, Randy!
I used to live in Appleton ’bout a half a mile from the Fox River
Hope you WIN!
Randy Noonan… Nice ring to it. Seriously, can you give us a sketch of the demographics and economics of your district?
sofistic @
47
Sure! This is an area that had relied heavily upon the paper industry for generations. Sort of the Wisconsin version of the Rust Belt. Many of those jobs have moved south or out of the country, so we’re moving to a service based economy after several factories have closed in the past couple of years.
Demographics – we’re very White – 97 % although that is changing. My home town is the largest city in the district, with about 12,000 people (that hasn’t changed in 100 years). The ‘official’ rating of this district is 47% Democratic, and with the ill wind blowing from DC and Madison, combined with the open seat, that makes this seat ripe for the picking.
I could pull up official census data if you’d like, but we’re blue-collar factory and farming communities with a guy in Madison that hasn’t been helping us much. It also helps me that my opponent is calling himself the ‘New John Gard’ – refer to Martha’s comments about him :)
Totals so far:
Randy Koehn 25 $422.71 $522.71
Come on, firepups! I know we can get more than 30 tv commercials paid for!
This is for family!

The Repub’s are in deep crapola. It looks like alot of their negativity is starting to damage them.

Hi Randy/ Noonan & Howie
It’s great to see a Wisconsin race covered by Blue America & I hope you all will consider Bryan Kennedy, James Sensenbrenner’s opponent in WI congressional district #5. http://www.bk2006.org/ I’ve also posted this thread in the Wisconsin group at http://www.democraticundergrou…..#215;17682 Thanks a lot Randy & Howie
Speaking of winguts, what DO you do when you encounter one while out knocking doors, Randy?
How do you approach them with your sane, well-thought out plan for bringing more affordable health care to them? Do they go on attack?
P.S. Please no Atlas before dinner.

I’ve really only had that happen a few times. I just cut bait and fish at a new hole – I won’t win them over and they don’t want to hear what I have to say. The majority of the time, die-hard Rs will tell me they don’t vote for a Democrat. But many of them are sick of everything their party supposedly stood for being hijacked. NPR had a great discussion about this last night.
When I first started doing doors, my advice had been don’t mention I’m a Democrat and people will listen.
While this may be true in some cases, there were people that would ask “You’re not a Republican, are you?” before I would get to far, so I started answering that question in my introduction and things have been just fine.
Noonan @ 59
Yeah, I sense that people are really a lot more receptive to listening to the Democratic side now more than ever. I think we really need to seize the moment and push hard at GOTV – like Christy and others here have been doing. If not now, when? Good on ya.
Just an aside here – for all the reputation the vaunted GOP machine has, they keep asking me to volunteer for phone banking and doors for their local candidates!
Oh my, A Noonan outing party.) Well it’s raining the creeks are up and my bank deposit is stayin’ put today, high and dry. You can count on me for a couple of spots very soon. Thanks Randy, for doing the dirty work!
Eureka Springs, AR @

Thanks! As a social studies teacher, I signed up with all campaigns to get information for my students. The GOP still asks me to help out after two years of yelling at them on the phone when they call.
Anyway, this is my opponent, in case you wanted to know. I hope that link works.
Oh, are we sending you to Madison or Washington? Sorry if thats a dumb question. I don’t get the (Gard seat) part of the post.
If it’s Washington be sure and pack those History text books for the dual purpose of hitting Republicans over the head with the Bill of Rights!
Eureka Springs, AR @

I got the same question here, especially before the primary. I’m going to Madison, but my opponent (in his own words) is proud of his continuing support of GW.
The R’s are pulling a big switcheroo here in WI, as is happening in a few other states. My current Assemblyman is running to replace my current Congressman – who is running for governor. This election can send a real seismic shock to the Republican establishment.
I lurk mostly, and I dropped a little cash on noonan to help it along (and some for John Laesch; Fat Denny has to go). That ticker is moving slowly though.
Jane and/or the other big dogs: would it be possible for you to do integrated ActBlue contribution, like what John Aravosis is doing over at AmericaBlog? I think that just that little step might drive more folks to contribute — you could add it at the top or bottom of any Blue America article.
D
Randy, just contributed $25. Good luck!
I just spent 6 months on a consulting engagement in Milwaukee. Love Wisconsin!

Thanks, and thanks to everyone that has given tonight. I love Wisconsin too, and that’s why I’m running. I tell people it is time we return to our roots as a leader in this country instead of following the lead of Texas. People are responding!
Am I too late?
I’m in Noonan.
EPU :) I’m still hanging around for a few more minutes. Thanks LindyH!
My pleasure! Go get em! I was away cooking and just got back. I’ll post the link forward tonight, for anyone looking for a good place to drop some dollars.
Lots of people still on their way home from work or still there.
As people catch up with the thread I know we’ll see some more action for you, Noonan.
Hang tough!
Cooking is what I should be doing now. My mom has our kids (4 & 5) right now, and they are due back any time now.
Well let me tell you, Nova (PBS) last night mentioned the fact we are rapidly heading for a reverse in the earths magnetic field. We could have visable aurora borealis from most anywhere on earth, as many as eight poles and play a new version of roulette with a compass. So you, amigo, are ahead of the curve.
Oh, the polarity..
I had the pleasure of following the Mississippi up into Wisconson during the 100 year flood back in the ninties while on an antique buying trip. Beautiful country! Funny accents, unlike mine. /snark
Really nice folks just hankerin’ for a progressive, like everywhere else.
When you see Senator Russ Feingold tell him to run!
No problemo. I’ll be back and forth throughout the night. I have some calls to make and some prep work for an hour long radio discussion tomorrow morning. We’ve been on the road quite a bit the past four days, running my son to have a minor procedure at a hospital three hours away. 12 hours on the road over three days isn’t fun, but tonight has really helped lighten my spirits.
And yes, he’s doing just fine, you really don’t want to know what they had to do to him if you’re getting ready to eat, but it was minor and he’s back to himself already.
got moderated? GL Noonan!

Good Randy, bad Randy, I guess.
Busted, Noonan! I’ve spread the word to a couple of your other families! BTW, I first found FDL through you, so this is poetic justice.
Hi Noonan,
We were up in the Marinette area recently, met some nice folks and got to see the Packer game. We also saw some of your yard signs and wondered who this guy Koehn was. Now we know.
Good luck, and win big.
