It is thirteen days and counting until the election. And our Blue America candidates are all pushing hard toward the finish line. If you can spare a fiver for any of them today via our Blue America page, it could make the difference between paying for another mailer or advertisement -- anything you can do to help would be very much appreciated by our Blue America candidates.
Now, let's take a little time to catch up with some of our candidates and some other campaign news -- there's a lot of news to cover, so I'm only able to hit a few. If you have news about a particular favorite Democratic candidate -- whether it is someone on our Blue America list or not -- PLEASE share in the comments below.
-- I wanted to take a moment to say a huge thank you to Andy, who has put together some of the amazing "Have You Had Enough?" videos for our Blue America PAC. Howie has a lot more on Andy's background -- let's just say it was a fantastic thing for him to take time out of his busy schedule to volunteer on this -- and I wanted to say thanks for everything.
-- Victoria Wulsin is neck and neck with Mean Jean Schmidt. Her campaign is putting out a new, hard-hitting ad, that you can view via YouTube here. Huge thanks to last term's candidate Paul Hackett, who has been campaigning as hard for Vic Wulsin as if he were running himself. This one is going to be a fight to the finish, so if you live nearby, GOTV help could be very, very useful here. As could poll watching volunteers. And I hear that the Cincinnati post has endorsed Vic for the OH-2. Howie has much more here.
-- The WaPo reports that Charlie Brown has pulled within striking distance of John Doolittle in the CA-04. Doolittle holds a HUGE amount of power in Congress, and Brown's win would be an enormous win for Charlie and for the Democratic party. If you missed our chat with Charlie, you need to go back and read Howie's fantastic introduction to him to understand just how much a Brown win could mean for America in terms of knocking out a whole mess of corruption all in one fell swoop.
-- Kirsten Gillibrand is neck-and-neck (as in within the margin of error) with John Sweeney. Go Kirsten!
-- New Senate poll numbers from Chris Bowers at MyDD:
The word to describe every one of these Senate races: volatile. You can also add in "down to the wire."
-- Kos has even more poll numbers here. Here is what I know: nothing is certain until the votes are all in and counted (properly!). And I'd rather have a huge Democratic turnout than anything else this year -- consider it a late birthday present for me, what do ya say?
You want to know what you can do? Help get out our vote. Because we have thirteen days to get the job done, and turning out a massive vote for Democrats is the only way to win. Here are some ideas on how to help -- here and here. Or just click on the "citizen action" topic at right.
Make certain your neighbors, your work colleagues, your family members are voting -- offer rides to the polls if need be, but get them to vote. One of those votes could make all the difference in a close race, and at the end of the day, you don't want to be sitting there thinking "I should have done a little more," now do you?
Thanks so much to everyone for all that you already do.
I'll do more updates as I get them on our Blue America candidates. If you have information or links on a particular race -- news articles, endorsements, whatever -- please link them up in the comments or shoot me an e-mail. And please, if you have five bucks to spare, consider forgoing that cuppa Starbucks and giving it to a Blue America candidate of your choice instead.
Have I told you guys that you are the best? Because you are...now, let's get out our vote and kick some GOP boo-tay in November. And please do update on the candidates for whom you are doing work -- I'd love to hear some reports from the ground in the comments. Thanks again for everyone help and hard work!

Anyone remember the electoral vote predictor from ‘04? It’s still going, and doing a nice job of tracking and collating the house / senate polls.

ACTION ITEM:
Christmas in October.
Tell your family and close friends that you are planning to make donations to Democratic candidates in their honor in place of traditional Christmas gifts! Ask that they do the same for you. Focus on the tight races.
For all of you who are feeling strapped for cash during election season, it will be much easier to give when you know that you have fewer Christmas gifts to worry about.
Gillibrand certainly has the momentum. Hillary came to my little village on Monday to endorse her and it was a wonderful rally. Bill Clinton will be in Albany tomorrow with Kirsten and Brian Keeler at NYSUT (teacher’s union) for another rally. I get to see two Clintons this week! My sister - working hard for Harry Mitchell (who will upset that vile JD Hayworth) in Arizona got to see and chat with Ambassador Joe last night at neighbor’s house. We’re starstruck and loving it!

I’m de-lurking to pass along my report on NC-11
Candy does NC-11
Screwy Hoolie and I were back stage filming Max Cleland and Heath Shuler as they prepared for their campaign rally a few weeks back. Someone stuck their head in and said that CNN had arrived. Curious, I finished up my filming and headed out front to see what was up. Standing near the back of the pavilion was (ugh!) Candy Crowley.
A week later at Drinking Liberally, CNN once again showed up. This time we were spared an appearance by the Crowl. Instead, they sent along a smart, intelligent young woman who asked to interview a number of us for their upcoming piece on Shuler.
It seemed obvious to me that they wanted to get a number of us dirty, hippie, liberal types on camera slamming on Heath. I was very judicious in my remarks as I didn’t want my words to be used to make a case against Shuler.
As soon as I saw the teaser for the piece yesterday afternoon, I knew that we’d been punked. Kyra Phillips was giggling about Crowley’s use of the word Wussies to describe democrats. She asked her if that had actually been a quote from someone she interviewed and Crowley laughed and didn’t answer the question. Candy of course was the only one that used that word throughout the program.
I was interviewed for about ten minutes and I was pretty pleased with my comments. I stated my belief that on abortion, immigration and gay rights, that Shuler’s and Taylor’s views were indistinguishable (Ouch!, Crowley editorialized). I was then asked what that said about the democratic party. I replied that it represented democracy in action. I pointed out that I lived in a district that was fairly conservative and that the democratic party had always been the big tent party. The sentence that was chosen for the segment just made it look as if I was bitching about Shuler not being liberal enough.
Well you live and learn I guess. It was fun to see my face on the TV. I just wish it hadn’t been used to make an argument against the man whom I support in the upcoming election. All in all, I think that Heath came off looking good despite CNNs best efforts to slant the coverage. Crowley’s entire argument that all democrats are wusses went nowhere.
What a great Wulsin ad. The comparison between her and Schmidt is at least as great as the comparison between Diane Benson’s wholesome honesty and Don Youngs’ scurrying from Alaska hiding place to hiding place.

ACTION ITEM: Please Call Obama, Ask Him to Campaign with Lamont
Please (pretty please?) make this call for the good guys. Here is what I suggest for “talking points”:
1.) Joe Lieberman’s $387,000 slush fund is compromising democracy in Connecticut.
2.) Prominent Democrats should speak out against Lieberman’s slush fund, lest they undermine their status as leaders in the fight against the “culture of corruption” in DC.
3.) Lamont needs visible and vocal support from prominent Democrats like Obama to offset Lieberman’s illegal activities
Once again, Obama’s senate office phone number is:

Websites are having to decide how to headline Clusterfuck’s presser today. Many are settling on “President not satisfied about war”– which suggests the musical question- “So what the fuck are ya gonna do about it and when are ya gonna do it”
Fuckhead.
Darcy Burner (WA-08) isn’t a Blue America candidate, but she probably should be. Al Gore was here for a a rally for her and Sen. Cantwell yesterday. She will join Maria Cantwell and Barack Obama for a rally tomorrow, in Bellevue, WA.
She’s running against Congressman Dave Reichert, who is one of the few Washington legislators to vote for the Military Commissions Act, which is something no negative adjective comes close to describing. I’ll just point out that fact and move on…
Reichert’s supporters have been running a series of ads that imply Burner will increase middle class tax burdens and warn ominously about her support for the “death tax”, which is known in the real world as inheritence tax.
Reichert also has some typically Republican views about the environment. This exchange between Gore and Greg Nickels, Seattle’s mayor, the Seattle Times, illustrates them:
Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels, who introduced the speakers, said Reichert doesn’t think climate change is caused by humans.
“Did he say that?” interrupted Gore, whose film about global warming, “An Inconvenient Truth,” grossed $23.7 million. “He’s not sure it’s caused by humans?”
advertising
“He’s not convinced that it’s caused by human beings,” responded Nickels.
“C’mon! And this man is a United States congressman?” asked Gore. “You know, 15 percent of people believe the moon landing was staged on some movie lot and a somewhat smaller number still believe the Earth is flat. They get together on Saturday night and party with the global-warming deniers.”
Every poll I’ve seen for the last month puts this race within the margin of error, with Burner slightly behind. Undecideds are generally under 5 percent, which means this thing will probably come down to who can do GOTV better.
You can contribute to her campaign via the Netroots ActBlue page:

I just told my 3 kids that I was doing this. Now they’re all crying. Thanks a lot, *xyz…
Here’s an election talking point for anyone who is listening: the higher interest rates being charged by credit card companies right now are a VERY big deal. In the last few weeks and/or months, folks are getting hit with rates of at least 28%! This (I think) is a direct result of Bush’s banking “unreform” law. Combine that with Bush’s lowering of available federal student loans for high school kids, and restricting individual ability to declare bankruptcy, and you see a prescription for loan servitude for a lot of our population. The Dems need to change this.
Most here have probably already discovered Pollster.com- the best site I have found for recent polling information. They’re randy- get it up fast.
They now have maps and charts- the senate map currently shows dems winning in four takeover states and the other three tied. The tied races are Va., Mo., and Tn.
Dems need two out of that three and pop the cork! It’s going to be tough though. Va. is still goin gooper in most polls- although the most recent shows Webb takin a small lead. Tn. is goin the wrong way in the last poll. Mo? well it just sits there all tied.
I’m blessed in that I rarely meet any conservative mouthbreathers, but I got an email today that had me shaking my head. Just thought I’d share:
And this is why I’m voting and making sure my friends do, too. We have to take back the country from these people.

Let me add a belated caveat that there is no need to subject kids to the Christmas in October Democratic donation scheme.
But I plan to give it a shot with my parents and other (adult) relatives!
I hope others do too.
Again, this is a nice way of conjuring up more money for donations in these critical two weeks. Do give it a try!

Thanks. Every contribution helps. Burner’s in a district that’s been progressively more Democratic over the last few years. It’s about time they were properly represented ;)

I’m considering diving into the family fabric collection (I’ve got yardage that is literally older than I am, and I’m on the downside of 50), oiling up the old Brother (made in the USA, circa 1963, mostly steel and powerful enough to sew through suede, jeans and canvas), and actually making most midwinter holy days gifts.
I’ve already spent the Oct/Nov/Dec entertainment fund, and the ’saving up for a big wonderful vacation’ fund. Might as well blow off my participation in the midwinter consumer madness frenzy as well.
That being said, I just blew through most of my COH over at the Blue America page, just a few bucks spread as far as I could stretch.
I still find it amazing that I can enjoy giving money to people that I will never meet, in hopes they will do good when they go to represent us in Congress. Not because I want a representative who will give my company a defense contract, not because I hate some other group of Americans and want to prevent them from having full rights as I do, not because I need a little something slipped into a 5K page budget bill that will exempt my corporation from paying for past abuses, or hand over vast tracts of our national lands to a strip-mining company, but because I have hope.
I know some of these people will do things I won’t agree with, but I do have hope that they will make their choices, decisions, and votes based on their oath to protect and defend the Constitution, and their promise to serve their constituents and our nation.
Hope is still that most precious thing.
anjinsan @ 21
Actually feeling the need to email such a thing is a level of pathetic that I hope I never reach.
New poll out from Gallup in Iraq. So what do americans think should be done about Iraq? They don’t have the faintest fuckin idea- just like the politicians:
Americans remain somewhat divided as to what the United States should do about its troops in Iraq. Many politicians in Washington have called for the United States to set a timetable for withdrawing troops, though the Bush administration has rejected that idea. The poll tracks a key Gallup question that provides respondents four alternatives — withdrawing U.S. troops immediately, withdrawing troops within 12 months, withdrawing after the situation is such that the Iraqis can take over the country, and sending more U.S. troops to Iraq.
The results are similar to what they have been for the past year, with more Americans favoring a withdrawal of troops in a year or sooner than favor a longer-term withdrawal or an increase in troop levels. In the current poll, 20% favor an immediate withdrawal and 34% favor a withdrawal in a year’s time, while 35% favor withdrawal, but in as many years as needed to turn control of the country over to the Iraqis. Just 9% favor sending more troops to Iraq.

In response to reading about Kerry’s tight grip on his campaign money in the late night thread here, I dug out the old “Sim John Kerry” stories that my husband and I did a while back.
The following excerpt from a transcript of NPR’s interview yesterday with Karl Rove caught my attention (emphasis mine):
http://www.rawstory.com/news/2....._1025.html
Now let’s look at what immediately preceded the comment that caught my attention so that I can avoid quoting that comment out of context:
I just called my county clerk to ask about absentee voting here in Charlie Brown’s district (CA-04). She said just bring up my sample ballot and I can vote right there at the clerk’s office (I don’t want to risk my ballot getting “lost” in the mail).
Their process: With all ballots that come in, they check the signature on the outside of the envelope against the signature on file with the clerk. If it matches, they take the separate the ballot from the envelope and put it in the “to count” pile. (she didn’t use the word “pile”)
One week before election day, they start counting the absentee ballots. Not by hand, sigh, they run them through a machine. On election day, the first numbers that are reported by the clerk are the absentee ballots.
This makes me want vote early even more, just because psychologically I always hate it when the first numbers skew Republican and the talking heads always say “oh, the absentee ballots always favor Republicans.” This year, if they don’t favor Republicans, that will give the media another piece of mouth candy to repeat over and over: even the absentee ballots are not as strong for Republicans as usual.
(ooh, I like that phrase: mouth candy. It’s the kibble you feed the lapdogs?)
Anyway, the helpful clerk said they have a nice chair and table where you can sit down and vote and turn in your ballot. How great is that?
And this: She said this year the absentee balloting is huge. Just today, she personally picked up 17 bins of ballots — that’s bins of ballots, not 17 ballots — from the post office.
rwcole — is there a separate link to that Gallup poll on what to do about Iraq?
Seems to me the response to all the fear-mongering by Republicans is:
We are Democrats
We are the people who have been trying to raise the minimum wage, so people have more money to spend.
We are the people who are trying to protect your Social Security benefits from the false promises of private accounts.
We are the people who are trying to ease the tax burden on working families by asking the wealthiest to shoulder a more proportionate share.
We are the people who have been working for veterans’ funding, and health care.
We are the people who tried to give Medicare the authority to negotiate with the drug companies to make prescription drugs more affordable to our seniors.
We are the people who tried to structure prescription drug coverage for the elderly as part of Medicare, to keep it out of the hands of private insurers who were more concerned with the bottom line than looking out for seniors.
We are the people who have tried to bring new thinking and new ideas to the table for months and months and months, as Iraq descended further and further into chaos.
We are the people who have consistently sided with consumers against the interests of big business and the energy companies and banks.
The Republicans trying to scare you are the same people who have abandoned your interests time and time again, who have failed to listen to your concerns and address your needs. They are the people who think changing the rhetoric will fool you into thinking they are changing their policies.
The choice is yours: you can either fall victim to the scare tactics, or you can stand up for what you know is the truth, and vote Democratic on November 7th.
rwcole @ 30
lickin the windowpane is what got us liberals in the mess we’re in.
Finally, if the Republicans lose this election, there is going to be another bloodbath and Civil War — this one within the Republican Party — as they all turn on each other, seeking to identify and stigmatize the culprits who led this country into this unparalleled disaster. Alexander Haig had some strikingly aggressive and bitter comments on CNN that I think is just a small sign of what is to come if the Republicans lose:

The middle class is missing from Congress
By BRYAN KENNEDY
Posted: Oct. 19, 2006
Ihave a fairly typical middle-class family. My wife and I both work. We have three small kids, and we live in a modest home in Glendale. We have the typical middle-class debt and mortgage. And, even though I can’t stand the thing, I occasionally drive the minivan to take the kids to dance lessons and soccer practices.
There’s really one main difference between my family and yours: I’m running for Congress.
What that means is that I campaign about 16 hours a day, every day. That’s hard - both for my kids and for me. It also means that I can’t work my regular job. There simply isn’t enough time for both teaching and campaigning. While the campaign is ongoing, I’m on unpaid leave from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
To support my family, I draw a salary from the campaign that is less than my university salary. I felt it was more ethical to draw a salary from voluntary contributions than to be paid by Wisconsin taxpayers. I also have a campaign staffer who spends much of her time watching my kids because I am meeting voters and making fund-raising calls. Recent columns by the Journal Sentinel’s Cary Spivak and Dan Bice called these actions into question.

A couple of things here:
Early voting began Monday in Texas–Abilene is reporting a record turnout. Two of three interviewed for the piece said they are voting for change. They want Rick Perry out. (Okay lots of low info voters here and will probably vote for Strayhorn. I still haven’t seen a single ad by Bell(D) but Strayhorn has ads all over the place.)
More important for Webb supporters:

young rising star in the Republican Party has boasted to witnesses of his sexual relationship with Charlie Crist, the frontrunner in the Florida governor’s race who has repeatedly denied that he is gay.
The GOP staffer, 21-year-old Jason Wetherington, told friends at separate social functions in August that he had sex with Crist, according to two credible and independent sources who heard Wetherington make the claim first-hand.
Anne at 40: that’s a great list. It would make a nice 60-second ad, using [fill in the blank] as the spokesperson, with lots of pictures, once for each point. A national ad to speak for the national party.
have you seen the new DNC add on Iraq — lots of “stay the course” quotes,” ending with “we’ve never been for stay the course.” It’s great.
In case anyone is interested, NJSC posted its opinon re same-sex marriage. based on my quick reading it holds that same-sex couples are entitled to the same financial and legal benefits as married counterparts but punts to the legistlature to provide (qithin 180 days)such benefits by amending the marriage statute to include same-sex relations or under an alterantive scheme.

Re the Bush quote about absentee ballot turnout that I’ve seen mentioned a few times, is this striking because it’s an example of the usual gibberish or a ’slip’ of sorts that might shed light on the point of origin for planned election shenanigans?
We have a new shitstorm here in Nevada. GOP gubernatorial candidate congressman Jim Gibbons, trying to squirm out of a recent sexual harrassment controversy, now apparently has a nasty NannyGate problem, complete with a paper trail “employment agreement” his wife signed with an illegal some years back. Taylor Marsh does a great job on Kerry’s money, too. It’s worth reading, especially if you think he hasn’t done enough.

He’s doing a LOT more than others, IMO.
Audrey (47), kos has a post up saying Bell can win Texas governship: Perry (R) 36; Bell (D) 26; Strayhorn (I) 19; Friedman (I) 16. Kinky Friedman votes would have to go to Bell; Strayhorn is a Republican running as an Independent. Also, Bell has TV ads running here.
The Kerry conversation continues in a new thread.
Re the interview with Senator Kerry, someone asked whether Deb called the Senator “John.” The two places she used it were situations in which Deb was probably referring to Jon Jennings, Kerry staffer, who helped set up the meeting.

Just got around to reading this.
That is quite a stink, isn’t it? Water is precious in that area. There’s very little of it on the ground most of the time, I can tell you that. I’ve had reason to visit Ft. Huachuca for the past couple of decades, although I don’t remember anything about ManTech. It’s probably one of those low-cost contractors that just provide workers for the government agencies there. There are so many of them in that area that I doubt even the natives can keep track of them all. I think they’ve run out of three-latter acronyms, so now they’re working on glomming syllables together to form company names.
Anyway, good luck getting rid of Renzi. There will be plenty of his kind left after this election. Getting rid of a few won’t screw up that ecosystem.
I’m SOOOO glad you guys are giving some attention to Kirsten Gillibrand’s challenge of the Miami Mob Leader.
For those few firedoglakers who may not know, Sweeney issued the infamous “shut it down” order that sent a mob of DeLay staffers to violently disrupt a legal vote recount in Miami-Dade.
That would be enough for me to support anyone running against Sweeney, but in volunteering over the last few months, I’ve met Gillibrand a handful of times, and she is the real deal — smart, aggressive, well-funded, great on her feet, genuine, empathetic, Democratic to her core.
She’s come from nowhere to within single-digits, and needs all the help she can get over the next 13 days.
Go here to find out what you can do.
