-- The Lamont campaign held a press conference this morning, and have said that they will be filing complaints with state and federal election authorities on Turncoat Joe's sketchy, curious $387,000 plus "petty cash" slush fund. There are any number of reasons to keep payments "off the books" -- most of them are a dirty use of the slush fund. A Senator who has been around the political scene his entire life, like Joe Lieberman has, ought to know better than to operate in such a sleazy, off-the-books manner. If he's been above board in all of this, then Joe should show the media his mandated expenditure logs to show just what each and every dime of this was used for in the primary. CTBob and the Lamont campaign blog have more. The law requires record-keeping for every last penny of petty cash expended -- a written journal of all disbursements -- and thus far the Lieberman campaign has produced...nothing, nada, zip, zero, even though they promised to produce their "petty cash" journal today. What are you trying to hide, Joe? We're still waiting...
You can co-sign the Lamont petition for an FEC investigation here. The final debate will be held in the CT Senate race this evening -- wonder if the unprecedented amount of undocumented money that Joe spent in the primary for who knows what purposes will come up? (Um...yeah, I think so...since vote buying or paying for petition signatures, just as two possible keep-it-off-the-books examples, are illegal.)
-- Chris Bowers at MyDD is pressing Democrats running in unchallenged or barely challenged races to turn over some of their campaign funds to the DNC, the DCCC and the DSCC to be used in tight races that could use the boost. Check out Chris' post and see if a call to your elected officials can help move the ball forward for the whole Democratic party in November.
-- Via Howie, I see that the MN Star Tribune has endorsed Coleen Rowley and Tim Walz. Crooks and Liars is focusing their fundraising efforts on Coleen today -- so if you have a spare fiver, please send it her way via our Blue America page -- or, if you prefer, to any of our other stellar Blue America candidates.
-- Bob Geiger has some fantastic analysis up via IAVA on support of the troops by various members of the Senate. Hint: the GOP doesn't fare well. I've had more than enough of that.
-- The LATimes reports that the battleground for seats in the House has widened, and that the DCCC is going to put more money into the races in these competitive districts. It's about time -- but thank goodness.
What is going on in the races you've been working on? Good news, bad news, anything that you need help with that maybe, just maybe someone here might be able to answer?
The time for accountability is now. Had enough?

FITZ and FDL!
Unbelievable! ;D Back to the post.
Colleen Rowley rocks my socks.
The GOPerv Spin Machine constantly pushes the meme of (perceived) liberal relativism, which begs the following:
It depends on what your definition of “stay the course” is!
Get Out The Vote!!
FIGHT BACK!!!!
I’ve been doing a lot of volunteer data entry for local progressive orgs, mostly in support of their GOTV efforts. My most recent assignment involved inputting registered voters who were leaning or definitely voting Casey.
Now, granted this is kind of a self-selected sample, but I saw a *lot* of Republicans (mostly older) who were not just leaning Casey, but *definitely* voting for Casey. Warmed my heart, it did.
Quoting myself from prev thread, was close to EPU’d and less OT here than there.
HotFlash @ 134
Hundreds of dollars!
Thousands of dollars!!
Millions and billions and trillions of dollars!!!
Now don’t be too hard on Joe. He’s so used to dealing with all the big numbers in the Pharma bills and the Halliburton/KBR no-bid contracts that this $387K just seems so . . . petty.
I mean, a hundred thousand here, a hundred thousand there, and it adds up to nothing in Joe’s world. Once you get to the billions here and billions there, then you’re talking about real money.
One last pitch for McNerney then I’m on the road for the week, but back walking precincts again on Saturday.
This from the gang at SayNoToPombo re: the LA Times article you linked to above. The DCCC keeps promising $$$ to CA-11, but so far they have given NONE.
SayNoToPombo
Frankly, given the DCCC’s dismal record at reading the local atmospherics, I’m not holding my breath that CA-11 will be one of the 11 new districts announced on Tuesday. But miracles can happen. I suppose it couldn’t hurt to give them a holler on behalf of Jerry McNerney: (202) 863-1500.
IMHO, that’s a whole lotta cash for phone banking. Paying for phone banking!
To phone bank from ANYWHERE in the country, sign up to help Jerry McNerney defeat Richard Pombo. Help us GOTV.
Phone From Home for McNerney
Thanks FDL!
(My unscientific estimate is that roughly 20% of the Casey definites came from Republicans)
It always occurred to me that someone who had the facts and could reason soundly could easily see through the repub BS and people like Lieberman. I suspect that too many people simply are lazy, or don’t have the time to read through everything and get their news and ideas from sound byte MSM. And the MSM is hardly fair and hardly informative. This leaves John and Jane Q Public with a hard row to hoe to make sense of it all.
More recently the republican crap has been so overwhelming that the MSM is having a hard to time glossing over it and making all the problems bi partisan (not that the dems are all angels). So now the MSM is giving the public a smattering of the failures of the repubs and the Cheney Administration.. but it is hardly a tough hard hitting indictment of their horrendous behavior over the past 6 yrs.
If anyone compiled a list of all their disgusting behavior it would stagger anyone who could even get to the end of it… a litany of lies, corruption, malfeasance, nepotism, bribery, torture, trashing the constitution etc. How even 20% of the people can support these thugs is hard to believe… How does it feel to thing that so many of our neighbors condone such behavior? Makes you wanna move away… far away. No?
Or maybe wisdom will prevail in the end… against all odds.
Did this get linked to yet?
Nedrenaline!
Don’t forget… that Joe’s dirty, nasty slush money has its source in scum like Mel Sembler and other Florida Republicans. Joe needs to account for his campaign spending.
Like T-Rex said last night, “… rain and sunshine lead to grass growing and flowers blooming.”
Hey all,
The Rep seat in Wyoming is still up for grabs. The republican incumbent has been resorting to negative ads (surprise), but it doesn’t seem to have much effect.
With only a couple of weeks to election day, my buddies and I are doubling our GOTV efforts.
Again, I ask you guys to check out the worldcan’twait.net website. Out here in the west we refer to this as hedging your bet.
The calm demeanor of Bush/Rove spells trouble, as in election tampering. If Pelosi is serious about the no impeachment pledge, than all of this is for naught.
Anyway, the good candidate in WY is Gary Trauner. Send him some love or good wishes. By keeping a race competitive in a state with 60 % of voters registered GOP, the GOP is having to spend time and money that could be spent elsewhere.

Small point: it’s Coleen Rowley, with one L.
Last evening, DiFi’s first ads appeared on teevee. Essentially, she and a young woman are watching her 1992 ad, when she first ran for Senate, holding a little baby. Turns out the little baby is her granddaughter, who is also the young woman in the current ad, watching the old ad with Grandma Dianne.
awwwwwww
They chat about protecting the environment and a strong national defense, getting our troops out of Iraq and making college affordable.
Missing from this ad:
Senator Feinstein’s party
Support for any other Democrats, including strong Congressional challengers to corrupt Pombo and Doolittle and do-nothing Bono.
Endorsement of any statewide Democrats with whom the Senator shares the ticket next month.
That’s what happening on our airwaves — a four million dollar ad buy, putting almost half a million dollars in Feinstein’s media buyer’s pocket, with no endorsement or mention of the Democratic Party.
Looking forward to tonight’s debate. Joe should be very worried that he will be totally crushed by the slush fund mess. And, I’m going to enjoy every second.
But, I have to wonder….what happenned to this guy? When he voted for the Bush Torture Bill, I was just stunned. That bill is the most despicable, un-American, freedom-hating, vile thing that has happenned in the history of the U.S. So, I have to wonder..how did this senator with a decent record for his first 13 years become the man he is today?
TSF - How very Lieberstein of her.

Signed the letter to the FEC, too. Long-time lurker on FDL who has long appreciates the commentary on this site. What with all the adrenaline building up for Nov 7th, guess I’m coming out of the closet, so to speak.
From ABC News:
It is now possible that not a single Democratic incumbent member of the House will lose, leaving Republicans to play defense in an expanding number of places for a grueling two weeks.
From me:
Former Judge, and current State Rep., Jari Askins (D-OK) for our next Lt. Gov.!!! Next month.
Vote Feinstein: Her Granddaughter Is All Grown Up!
Stirring.
TeddySanFran, that’s why I’ll be holding my nose as I vote for her. Next time around (if she tries running again) I want a real Democrat running against her, just so people can see the difference.
OT: I wonder what would happen if Jenna and not-Jenna got on a snailmail list for military recruitment literature.
In the five years since 9/11, little has been done to secure our borders and our ports.
Heh.
Nancy Pelosi has announced she won’t seek impeachment if the Dems take control. The DLC will be sooo happy!
retirin’ at 26 — you know, once you’ve delurked, there’s no going back in the “closet.” *g* Great to have your voice added to the mix. :)

Welcome! Let’s hear from you often.
TeddySanFran @ 22
Good catch, Teddy. Sadly, its all about DiFi and her consultants - and zip about we hapless constituents. With Boxer shaming & compromising her once fine reputation by kissing up to HoJo and refusing to endorse Lamont, much less help him, guess its up to Nancy Pelosi to act like a Democratic leader. sigh….
TSF - assume you saw this re the challenges facing Charlie Brown:

Citizen Hardin Smith:
Kos has a good post on Joe Liarman’s
“precarious” lead in the most recent polls…I can’t believe that Lamont hasn’t polled better’n 65% of registered Dems in Connecticut. This race is the classic 3-way split that can put a parade clown in office if the electorate is turned off to both parties (see Jessie Ventura in Minnesota…er don’t if ya wanna sleep well). However, I was given ta understand that Connecticut is pretty “blue” and doesn’t show signs of abandoning the Dems, so wazup with Lamont’s low showin’ among registered Democrats?
The landscape in Minnesota looks pretty good right now for a 3 seat pickup…Walz and Rowley could use some cash but if the turnout is there on election day, the fascists are gunna be down ta one seat in the Minnesota delegation.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, THIS IS JUST A BATTLE IN A LONG WAR!!
Re Pelosi and impeachment:
Well, there might not be impeachment hearings. A super majority is required in the Senate, I believe to do the impeachment thing, and the smart money is on there won’t be enough votes to do it. But… I’d bet my last whatever on there being an inquiry, by Conyers etc. And that works for me, at least. And there are the criminal courts too.
Norske at 39 — Matt Stoller has done some great reporting this week on the polling situation in CT. Take a peek over at MyDD on that for some great insight. My take is that the polling models for this particular race have been all over the map, depending on the stance of the person running the poll — the QPoll has been consistently off by around 10% (it was way up for Ned in the primary, in what was really a tight race, and now it’s way up for Joe…so I’m trusting the ground game reporting that I’m hearing more than poll numbers because of that “once burned” sort of feeling, ya know?)
TeddySanFran @ 37
I used to live in Auburn. Placer Co. is a major “red-county”. And Doolittle and his wife are major crooks. They fit right in.
Holy crap — we could get 1 to 2 inches of snow today. Brrrrrr…we have had the weirdest weather this year.
punaise @

This district is changing, and I haven’t checked those numbers — but there are many new residents from the Bay Area and from So Cal. Many are anti-tax, to be sure — but I don’t think the district is as conservative as 20, even 10 years ago. I don’t think corruption and hiding behind his awful record is playing well. Charlie Brown is a fantastic candidate at just the right time, it will be a fantastic takeover of a previously uber-conservative district that may show that the Democratic affiliation doesn’t automatically disqualify someone.
retirin’ in five @ 26
Nice to meet you, retirin’ in five.

UPDATE ON NC-11
Greetings from the beautiful mountains and trails of Asheville NC. Things have been heating up on the SHULER vs. TAYLOR front.
Charles Taylor is a long-time congressman, multimillionaire, bank and large-scale landowner, apologist for GWB, and is strongly anti-conservation). Remember ‘Mr. Potter’ from the Christmas movie? You get the idea.
Heath Schuler has beat back some mud and lies, most recently in a well-funded direct mail blitz from Taylor. And now the good news:
Heath has received endorsements from the Hendersonville paper, AFL-CIO, NEA, League of Coservation Voters, etc. Recent polls show that his message is getting out and that the voters may be ready for a BIG change. For comparison, two polls from Constituent Dynamics-
10/12 Shuler (D) 51% Taylor (R) 43%
9/6 50% 47%
We’re running out of lawn signs!
My very best,
tfitznc
I have not seen anywhere where the IRS has been interested in the dispersal of almost $400,000 off the books. Seems to me that they want to track who is going to be reporting that as income, eh?
re impeachment:wont seek it doesn’t mean it wont happen as a result of all the investigations and public clamoring for it (yeah I know..in my dreams but I do dream….)
About the slush fund, someone just told me they spoke to a person at the FEC, who acknowledged that the complaint had been filed, but that it was unlikely anything could be done with the investigation until after the election. Which is pretty much what I figured.
The real damage this can cause for Joe is if the MSM picks up on it and starts asking the campaign where the money went. But my opinion of the MSM is that they’re a bunch of lazy, status-quo loving sheep, who would rather transcribe what is given to them than actually have to go out and DEVELOP a story, so I don’t expect a lot from them.
Basically, it’s up to US to keep the pressure on Joe and the MSM to cover this story. Don’t forget that Dick Nixon was reelected almost five months after Committee to Reelect the President employees were caught burglarizing the Watergate DNC HQ office, so if we don’t dig for the truth on this, it won’t come out until it’s way too late.
LTTEs and calls TV & radio news stations will help. And GOTV efforts can REALLY help at this point, since we’ll be the prime source of info on this scandal.
And CSPAN will rebroadcast the debate at 11PM EDT, if I heard correctly. WTNH.COM has streaming video, and WTIC.COM will have streaming audio. And watch your local listings, because CSPAN has been known to include important coverage last minute.
OT, from today’s WaPo (h/t to Waldo Jaquith):
Before North Korea announced it had detonated a nuclear device, some senior officials even said they were quietly rooting for a test, believing that would finally clarify the debate within the administration.
You know that wingnut blather about “the Democrats are rooting for our enemies”? More projection.
How crazy an ideologue do you have to be that you’d prefer to have something really bad happen to provide support for your position rather than compromising to prevent it?
Christy and Egregious: thanks. It will probably be an infrequent voice. But I’m watchin’, nonetheless. And fully supportive.
punaise at 46 — nah, you caught me at a good time — having a nice, hot mug of tea. :)
ruffian @ 49
A last-minute National Republican Congressional Committee ad campaign, indirectly raising the Clinton-Lewinsky issue, played in 30 competitive districts in the hopes of swinging them toward the GOP.
It was a gamble that didn’t necessarily pay off. Fears of a backlash appear to have had some foundation as more of the open House seats went Democratic than Republican.

1,312 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Oklahoma kiddo:
The numbers won’t be there in the Senate but if several committees start hearings on war profiteering, illegal surveillance, 9/11 and vote rigging, then we might have a situation like what happened with Watergate where enough of the fascists in the Senate will be lookin at re-election in ‘08 and will bail on the Chimp. Remember, the momentum for impeachment is gunna come from the senate investigations with the House committee takin action on evidence from the Senate. (At least that’s the way it worked with Nixon).
But I hafta tell ya that I am very torn about impeachment. On the one hand, for the survival of the constitution and our system, if we can’t get these fascists impeached for and illegal war and the complete corruption of the federal budget process then we’re toast. On the other hand, spendin the better part of a year on impeachment at the expense of soldiers’ lives and the collapse of the economy doesn’t bode well for takin the whole enchilada in ‘08.
But havin’ the choice to impeach or jest let the nazis stew in their own vomit is a nice situation.
KEEP THE FAITH AND DON’T LET THE BASTARDS OFF THE GROUND!!!
Don’t let the criminals off the hook!
From the Walsh report on Iran-Contra: “…the failure to punish government lawbreakers sends the perception that public officials are not wholly accountable for their actions. It also may lead the public to believe that no real wrongdoing took place.”
and
“Congress has the duty and the power under our system of checks and balances to ensure that the president and his Cabinet officers are faithful to their oaths.”
Christy Hardin Smith @ 43
Good thing we’re not getting it in DC, we’d have to shut the entire city down! *g*
Signed the FEC letter.
For some reason I am still fixated on all those Uncle Sam costumes Lieberliar paid for.
BTW. I *remember* hearing about the shoving match at the Temptations concert from someone who witnessed it. What’s more the Lamont person that got shoved was a tres petite young fille, and the person doing the shoving was a Lieberthug (mid to late 20’s I think). His supervisor aparently apologized to hers. But still!
I’m having trouble getting my head around the concept of $400K as petty cash. I think of petty cash I think of donuts money, money to buy a new ink cartridge when you run out of ink in the middle of printing , that sort of thing. Is $400K a reasonable and normal amount of petty cash for a Senate race? If it is what is it normally for? Anybody know?
punaise @ 60
OMG, punaise! Even Christy wouldn’t file a complaint about that.
Hey,
Maybe Lieberman can be punished now for the use of the slush funds.
There’s been a lot of talk about the possibility of vote-buying, but what if there was signature-buying, for Joe’s independent run?
Does the timing work for that possibility?
Can Joe be kicked off the ballot in this event?
Probably a long shot, but the issue is worth looking into.
Sally @ 62
Thanks, Sally. This is one for a cross-stitch sampler. Hmm, it’d make a nice Christmas present for Speaker Pelosi to hang in her new office, don’t you think?

but surely she’s a seasoned negotiator: this would give her something toboggan for.
GW Clusterfuck meets with generals to discuss renaming Iraq–”We’ve got to call this fuckin war somethin else” said Clusterfuck.. WE can’t afford to keep callin it “the war in Iraq”:
Senator Clinton’s GOP challenger, the NY Daily News reports, calls her “ugly”.
I may not care for the Senator’s Iraq and Middle positions, but if true, Republican John Spencer is hitting another new GOP low.
Senator Hillary Clinton is far from ugly. Speaking for myself only, I find this woman rather attractive, physically.
http://www.nydailynews.com/
The Iraqi theft of $1.2 billion discussed on 60 Minutes last night (which was supposed to be used for defense purchases) might also come under Joe’s idea of petty cash. The interviewer asked an Iraqi if any country had ever stolen that large of an amount and I hoped he would say, “Oh, sure, the U.S. has done that here and much more.”
In my cash-handling days for Federal and State governments, petty cash in no way meant it did not have to be accounted for in every detail.
If Tammy Sun can’t find the logbook re: the petty cash, how did they come up with the figure?
TeddySanFran @ 22

I’m so crappy at math. What percentage does that work out to?
Daily Kos has a post up that the Green candidate in CT-04 is pulling out to give the Democrats a better shot at Shays.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 71
[Okay JH: Swopa was right; some men just can’t handle strong, intelligent women, especially those in power. Some of us are barely out of the trees.]
Clothodi at 65 — no, it’s not a normal number. As an example, the Lamont campaign had around $500 in petty cash expenditures for the same period of time. The FEC regs require that you only have $100 at a time on hand for petty cash, and you have to keep track of every single penny that you disperse. You are required to make payments to people via check — just like you are for any other business. Petty cash is for stuff like an emergency box of paperclips or quarters for parking or something. Not handing out money by the bucket.
punaise @ 69
You’re now on a slippery slope; tough sledding here.
HotFlash (68), I’m all for sending every member of Congress the sampler you mention.

I want, no, I demand criminal proceedings against these brown-shirt thugs. Upon conviction, I want them in jail!
And…I’d like nothing better than full-on impeachment hearings. These Bush guys are nothing more than an organized criminal mob. Unfortunately, I just don’t see how, without the votes, that impeachment will happen.
Oh, and not incidentally this bunch are war criminals, and should be tried as were their political brethren in 1948 at Nuremberg.

Hmm. Could the any signature signing malarky have happened in the Hartford area, by any chance? I remember a woman telling she had been presented with a petition but refused to sign, with a lot of mysteroius emphasis in her voice, but maybe I am reading too much into it. I did think it was peculiar at the time though. The way it was expressed.

it presents a Calvin-and-Hobbesian dilemna
Good old Leslie Stahl wanted Pelosi to “pledge” there will be no impeachment. Shades of Russert, O’Reilly, Matthews, Blitzer, Kurtz, Brooks. I so wanted Pelosi to come back with a headliner quote but she failed me.
If this has been mentioned before, apologies.
But
