Go Ned,
thanks Jane
Hell yeah! Go away Joe!
Whoa- Chris Mathews was just drumming up votes for Ned!
“If the war keeps going after November and you didn’t vote against it, you haven’t done all you could. You only get one vote so why wouldn’t you vote against the war?”
this in context of why aren’t some dems – working class dems who Mathews identifies as most hurt by the war – voting for Ned
Holy Crap! Chris Matthews just gave CT voters a what for. He said, if you’re against the war you’ve only got one vote, vote against it. He said it makes no sense to vote for Lieberman if you’re against the war. Emphatically.
My heart is in my throat and I just can’t watch – can’t stand to hear Joe’s whiny voice.
So I hope those who are watching won’t mind describing the action.
Matthews also refers to Lieberman as “the biggest hawk on the planet”.
Nice first debate report up from Connecticut Bob!
http://ctbob.blogspot.com/
Here I am in New London, CT across the street from the debate. Just talked with the guy in the Kiss Float. Wasn’t able to get into the debate. Damn.
In just 340 hours, 2 minutes from NOW – It will be 12:01 AM Election Day -
this takes ONE HOUR, doesn’t cost ya anything with unlimited evening minutes
and Rove is counting on you NOT doing it
http://pol.moveon.org/phone/volunteer/c4c.html
tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock
Freedom Fever . . . Catch It !
Oklahoma kiddo @ 6
Yeah, it was great. He seemed exasperated with CT voters. He couldn’t understand why Lieberman would be doing so well considering Iraq is the number one issue.
Lord knows, as a nutmegger, I feel the same way.
Siun @ 3
He’s got that nailed.
He’s describing the blue collar Reagan Dems who most likely watch Fox News and therefore think Lamont is best friends with OBL
Wake up sheeple!
And they’re off. . .
The WTNH live feed URL is:
mms://a811.l1148252302.c11482.n.lm.akamaistream.net/D/811/11482/v0001/reflector:52302
If you live in a command line world, both xine and mplayer know how to interpret this URL. The stream appears to require WM9 capabilities. If you’re running Unix or Linux, that means you’ll need a 32 bit player. If you don’t know what that means you’re probably OK.
dab from CT @ 11
wow! did he really call out FoxNews? I think that’s a breach of etiquette in the Club…
I hope torture and the Supreme Court come up this time.
Just an aside – requiring user access to streaming be thru WMP. sux. (I won’t do it…even though this XP box has it installed. Real sux too, but this user wants that choice.
Here comes the debate over-the-air WTIC/1080.
Let the best man win!
How cool is this. Watch the debate and see the comments of all the FDL’ers at the same time.
I’m in mac hell at the moment.
It is cool. But I’m a bit bummed. Way too late to actually get into the debate. I’m across the street. So close and yet so far.
Jane Hamsher @ 17
I thought Quicktime could handle these streams?
Lieberman is asking the other candidates to refrain from kissing him. Seriously.
Cujo359 @ 19
Windows Media Player has a macintosh version.
OT, how do you close a mailto tag?
I just want to say that I don’t believe the polls about Joe. Bush is polling at about 35% Nationwide even with some Dem support and all the Gop votes I don’t think it adds up
Boy is LIEBERMAN NOT ANSWERING the Iraq question! Just off and running on bipartisanship.
I’m in.
xyz – how does Ned look? Cool & confident or all keyed up & tense.
You know he knows everything is riding on this.
Lieberman has been blabbing for four minutes or so now, so I haven’t gotten a look at Lamont.
Hope the Mods keep Joe on the clock!
Oh c’mon, Joe has to be SOOO over his time limit having wasted all that time on the non-opening opening statement answer to Iraq.
What a putz! Lieberman is blowing his load right from the beginning, like he did in the first debate. He’s digging his own hole. What a hole.
Every time he says ‘bipartisanship’ I want to scream It wasn’t bipartisan, it was Lieberman giving Bush whatever he wanted.
First question is apparently about Iraq. It took Joe more than a minute to get on point.
Lieb. says that he offered a ten point plan for success in Iraq
* Change SecDef
* Train Iraqi security forces
* We cannot fail – Lamont favors a “politically driven” policy of “retreat”. Pull together across party lines, blah, blah.
He really is the ultimate concern troll, but he has the schtick down to a well honed art.
He’s an uncommonly accomplished liar.
Is Joe packing a few extra pounds, or is his suit coat stuffed with bundles of cash?
Are they going to turn off his mike?
Remember the rule about Lieberman. The more the voters see him, the less they like him. So this opening statement by Lieberman might be a good thing.
Go Ned. He started real well!
Thank God for Ned. I fell asleep from Droopy Dog’s droning.
Ned is always clear and concise and strong.
I love you, Ned.
hey jane, as a canadian i don’t think it would be appropriate to send money to political campaigns in your nation. as an artist and a freedom loving individual, it scares the crap out of me to think that the lunatics that have hijacked the great nation of america might cling to power. so i was thinking, i’m in the process of recording a new album, how about i send you mp3s of 5 songs that are close to completion and you can give those songs to anyone that plonks a fiver into the democratic kitty. let firedoglake funnel the money to the appropriate campaigns through the act blue network.
call it a gesture or a gift or whatever, my work is all under the creative commons. maybe i’m crazy, but given the scale of impact that america has on the world, i think it is in my best interests to contribute in a meaningful way if i can. let me know at the email address provided and i’ll rip some tracks and send them your way. cheers and best of luck to all of my american friends in reclaiming your great nation.
punaise @ 34
Maybe he just has really small hands.
Pachacutec – I wonder how long it will take for Joe to bring up regime change in Iran this evening.
Ned sounds good!!!
Ned coming out pretty aggressively in his opening remarks
Lamont: “Stay the course” isn’t working. It’s not working. Mentions that Lieb. is calling his position “partisan”. “I believe we didn’t get into Iraq because we asked to many questions, but because we asked too few.”
Hah – Schlesinger standing in between Joe and the camera.
Those of you who can’t get the video may be able to get the audio from this site courtesy of Ct Bob’s site:
http://ctbob.blogspot.com/
Scroll down to this:
Anybody know where the Lamont rally is?
Ned was very good. Very forceful with a tinge of anger. Perfect tone
Pachacutec @ 45
Joe is the chip on Alan’s shoulder
Alan is very good, uses his body well, owns the space on the stage.
I hope Ned’s speaking from his heart. I want people to see the Ned those of us who have met him see.
Joe’s grinding his teeth.
holy shit, my 10 year old son just asked me what a virgin was! & he saw it on a movie on Disney channel!
Thanks for the live blog!
Schliesinger is doing his comedy routine
Schlessinger: Partisanship isn’t the problem. Corruption of Maliki government may be the problem.
dab from CT @ 51
He is.
Ned looks fabulous, his hair has a little curl on the forehead that is very attractive. He is coming on very strong and serious. Not bipartisan to go along with Bush’s failures in Iraq. Now we have 140,000 troops there in danger.
xyz at 36:
What’s to like? Repellent little man.
Ned’s got the fire in the belly
strong on health care
Cujo359 @ 13
Thanks Cujo!
thanks egregious – you do a great job live blogging
solai @
31
Not so much bipartisanship as date rape.
Lamont is doing the job in the debate. It’s obvious where this jerk questioner, Mark, I think his name is, is coming from.
Question for Lamont on health policy, Lieb hasn’t done anything for 18 yrs but Dodd there for 25.
Lamont: Dodd right on Iraq
As business person I can tell you health care system broken, bankrupting families and small business; bring down cost of health care by letting small business buy into plans.
Hurting jobs, hurting entrepreneurs, hurting growth. Need to send someone from outside the Washington cultue to shake things up.
I hope I’m not the only liveblogger here…
Lamont is speaking more slowly and forcefully than I have ever seen him speak before. It is resonating with the crowd.
The more I look at Schlesinger the more I dont like him. But he is still much much better than Lieberman.
I am having an anxiety attack – the thought of Lieberman being voted in for a fourth term is more than I can handle
Ned MUST win
lazlo pink @ 39
Nice offer! Hope Jane sees it. Legally you can’t contribute $$ anyway.
Everyone’s a bit distracted/ focussed right now!!
Cujo359 @

Jane Hamsher @
17
cujo’s link worked for me – i was also stuck in mac hell.
cujo – thank you, thank you, thank you!
Sch, must identify the costs of health care. Not silver bullet but step in right direction. Wants catastrophic insurance and health savings accounts.
A car ran into my house a couple weeks ago after being hit in the intersection. The woman driver went to the emergency room after the dust settled. I spoke to her today and her bill for a visit to the emergency room where she said she sat and waited for over two hours was FOURTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS! For nothing! barely nothing!
Lieberman is ‘Charlie McCarthy’. Bush is ‘Edgar Bergen’.
xyz – I saw him on Saturday and he was calm, upbeat and determined.
He knows this is for all the marbles
I believe it’s 2006, not 1964.
Breathe Dab CT, breathe..
Alan is talking about how expensive health care is. His eye surgery in the sixties was around 50 bucks or so.
He proposes health savings accounts. You can get it from employer or deduct it. Says that you will be careful in choosing your healthcare consumption if you have control.
Schlessinger: What we need are health savings accounts.
Cujo359: If you can’t afford medical insu*an*e, how can you afford to save for it beforehand? I’m not a Wharton grad, but I think the economics are pretty self-explanatory here.
Someone else will have to report Lieb because I JUST CAN’T BEAR TO HEAR HIS VOICE no matter how much I love my country. I’m sorry. I’m willing to travel alone to Russia repeatedly but I will NOT subject my tender self to that horror.
Has Schlesinger lost his frickin’ mind about healthcare??? People don’t care about the cost??? What planet is he from?
guess I’ve been live blogging on the wrong page!
I don’t type fast enough to do effective, substantial live-blogging.
I’d say Schles is at least coming across “credible’ to like-thinking repubs.
Sch 26 trillion, bill is coming, baby boom people start using system, whole health system collapses.
Your senator is not telling you the truth here.
Lazlo Pink – drop me an email and I’ll see what we can do – media dot firedoglake at gmail dot com
Thanks for the cool offer!
Eureka Springs, AR @ 74
LOL – I’m trying…
Joe’s ignoring Alan and whining about Ned.
Geez, what were the odds?
Lieberman lies again and again.
Oh crap. Don’t write the word “insu*an*e”! You’ll rot in moderation hell!
Lieberman is talking. I can’t transcribe. Needless to say it is all wind and lies.
Christ, somebody get the hook.
Schlesinger is giving the insurance companies a free pass. It sounds credible, but it’s the right wing spin.
Joe is like chalk on a blackboard.
Oh jesus, medikids, medichoice.
dabfromCT …Ned is a FINISHER….think positive…..he will get it done tonight…..300-400 supporters there before the debate must have jacked Ned up….
GO NED
Lieberman is a compulsive liar.
dab- and if you can’t breathe, at least try to inhale and exhale in alternation.. ;)
Dang, I used the i* word.
Joe almost choked saying “partisan polarization”
Lieberman talking about supporting Kennedy Katzenbaum .. now talking about middle class family dropping health care to send kid to college. Medicare, medichoice, medical malpratise reform … Joe saying he’s doing stuff
Unlike Net Lamont’s proposal mine does not have mandate on small businesses forcing them to cover everyone
we’ve had enough of partisan polarization and I’m the one to get it done
that was Lieberman … next question to Scheslinger
And Schlessinger is a weasel.
I think Lieberman said bipartisan 30 times in his latest response.
Pssst. Spell it *nsurance or it gets stuck in the filter.
punaise @ 94
707!
Question iraq admin talking in abstract terms good/evil. Is this right or more specific.
Sch start w illegal immigation.
punaise @ 93
I don’t want to hear about Joe’s pp.
*xyz @ 97
Yeah, well, ain’t that what he are?
somebody asked for restatement of question…who?
With the notoriety and recognition Schlesinger is getting, he’s starting to get the virus Obama’s caught. As I’ve said on another thread using an old expression my father used, he’s just had too much smoke blown up his ass. He’s starting to believe the b.s. and like 50 men and women in the Senate, already planning his Presidential campaign in his head.
selise @ 69
You’re welcome. I wish these websites would just get a clue, and in addition to their broken Javascript popups they also published the URLs in a readable form.
Eureka Springs, AR @ 98
——————————————-We should be so LUCKY….LMAO!
sch immigration is spearhead of terrorism
ooh, Alan smack-down from Stepontopofthis: “can you please just answer the question?”
OOOOHH…. somebody’s undocumented pool cleaner is now a TERRARIST… Well, according to Alan…
Sch says main threat is from mexico.
Shels, “Are we involved in a war between good and evil”? Schels started talking about immigration. GS stops him and asks that the question be restated. Schles keeps going.
This also-ran is an embarrassment.
Schlesinger sounds like he’s running in Arizona with this threat from Mexico nonsense.
Cujo thank you!
Schlessinger thinks the main terrorism threat is coming from Mexico. How many nukes does Mexico have?
I am concluding that Schlesinger is an idiot. Sorry.
Joe wants to give them amnesty, Ned wants to give them scholarships, I want to give them the boot – Schles.
I don’t see immigration as a hot CT issue and the question was on terrorism
Joe unleashing his inner neocon.
Schlesinger is sending immigration dog-whistle messages to the conservative/racist base.
Allen is answering a question on terrorism with his anti-immigrant policies. He might just be crazy enough to ciphon Republican votes.
Woops – now Joe is doing the Bush Islamofascist rap.
Don’t applaud Stephanopolous…he might be there representing the DLC….He is one of their trolls! Let Schlesinger actup who cares!
Joe whiiiiiinnnnneeeeee. Oh yeah, hearts and minds. Watch that movie Joe!
*xyz @ 88
Please try, just give a summary or the occasional bon mot. I can’t do Lieb it makes me ill.
Joe wants to win hearts and minds… I’m old enough to remember the ‘Nam… Winning Hearts And Minds…. comes out to WHAM… Thanks, Joe, for the new idea.
Joe still selling democracy in Iraq. He’s really sucking the pipe.
Lieberman is repeating Bush language. Ned has a chance to attack him now.
Holy Joe wants to reach out to Muslims.
With TORTURE, Joe? You’ll catch their hearts and minds with TORTURE?
Come on Ned, drill his ass
Siun @ 119
Actually, it is a huge issue. The mayor of Danbury has everyone stirred up about the illegal immigrants from South America. There have been KKK-like marches in Danbury – it’s obscene.
Joe just implied that iran is an Arab country.
Joe goes into Bush style 9/11 islamoterrorists who hate us and want to kill us … we need to stop them
not alright to give up and pull out of iraq – if we can succeed in Iraq and success means an independent government … hearts and minds of the muslim world
What in the hell is Joe talking about? “An alternate bridge to the muslim world” — jeepers, has he been hanging out too much with Ted Stevens.
Joe’s not ready to give up on Muslims – guess billions of people are relieved.
punaise @ 81
You don’t have to type fast just give us a clue, a phrase, a summary. Please?
Oklahoma kiddo @ 72
Oh SNAP!!! Ned or Alan?
Lieberman is talking about doing more killing in Iraq. My God.
Let us know if Ned whacks LIEberman!
can someone try insurance again?
Senator’s right, we have to win but we have to change course. . .BUSH-LEIBERMAN policy!
punaise @ 129
Well, it’s near some arab countries. Isn’t that close enough?
Ned just said “Bush-Lieberman policy.” Sweet.
Bush-Lieberman policy!
Whack ‘em, NED!
Ned is tying Lieberman to Bush at every turn Yeah!
12String @ 133
ROFLMAO.
Iran – Here we go again says Ned …
Ned’s talking about Iraq. Lieb’s smirking in background
punaise @ 130
There he goes projecting his new regime ideas from Karls secret playbook.
Good on you Ned…tie those idiots together…they ARE two pea-brains in a pod.
not force, not regime change. hard-headed negotiations with Iran
Ned is great so far … really clear and hitting hard
It seem like Joe’s doing all the talking..what gives?
this link is working -
http://wtnh.com/
Ned does look good, great body language, strong but earnest
ooooh “Bush/Lieberman policy”
on Iran – “here we go again” hard headed negotiations, backed by strong sanctions, no, not force, not regime change
We’re making bad choices and I think it’s time for a change! Well done Ned!
“Senator Lieberman, you don’t need to hog the microphone in this debate. I know you’re worried about losing the election, but you can still be heard as a Fox news analyst after . Let Alan and me have our time now, thank you!”
lamont iraq we are making the situation worse, our own intel agencies say. hold their feet to the fire, so they make compromises
every day stay the course the world more dangerous
iran…the world is more dangerous under bush admin..iran with a bomb oh my God…people advocate regime change i say here we go again. need hardheaded negotiations russi,a historic relationship other countries
gotta look at our own homeland sec, yes lieb is co head of committee homeland sec, but does ct benefit no,
2 billion dollars a week but no screening of port cargo, biggest threat weapon coming in container not screened bad choices time for a change HUGE APPLAUSE
dab from CT @ 150
no ned just had a good segment and got lots of applause
Ned: “The world has gotten much more dangerous over the last five years under the Bush-Lieberman policy.” “They say every time we have an issue with someone that we have to attack, and I think ‘here we go again.’ We have to have hard-nosed negotiations and diplomacy, backed up with tough sanctions” and use the nations that have leverage with those nations.
Pointing out that Lieberman has missed key votes on homeland security and his other committees — what has that gotten for Connecticut? It’s gotten them less.
Talking about the cost per day in Iraq. And what we could do with that money that would make us more safe if we were not wasting it in Iraq. “I think it is time for a change.” (Huge applause.)
Torture question for Joe!
this is another of those debates where each candidate gets a total amount of time, so RGJoe should be shut down pretty early if he’s droning on and on. watch him try to steal time unless they shut off his mic.
question about intrusions on privacy and retreat from rule of law now its lieb so i quit
Steph gave Ned extra time to even it out and he used it well
torture question now … for Lieberman
assessment from dean of Yale Law – retreat from the rule of law acc to Dean Ko
Marion in Savannah @ 102
“Bipartisan” is nothing more than a kiss to the Republican voters. Joe needs `em. Badly. He can’t say that Republicans are fuckin’ twits who’ve dominated Congress for twelve years and have made a mess of things. To do that, he’d have to be a Democrat….
Joe, “This adminstration has made some great mistakes” NSA wiretaps, “YES”! but. . .No one is above the law”.
Lieberman – trying to sound sane on NSA etc
siun, i just shipped an email your way. cheers
Lieberman is nutz.
thanks for the live blogging. I’m just too nervous to watch!
marky @ 156
Tell me Ned said that…
Joe’s talking… {very many expletives have just been deleted…}
Lieberman: “I want our government to be listening in on conversations that suspected terrorists are on, and looking at e-mails from suspected terrorists.” But he says that Hamdan says that the Bush Administration has to get a warrant. (CHS: oops, wrong case, Joe.)
Joe: not even the preznit is above the law. w/o liberty we are not americans
Holy Joe Tortureman has done nothing to help people who were wrongly imprisoned.
He’s done nothing to stop bush.
And now he says his record has shown he fought for our rights????
Kick his ass, NED!
I love to hear Lieberman talk about Hamdan. He allowed appointment of two of the dissenting judges in that case, Alito and Roberts
YES thanks for the live blogging…I can’t get the stream to work…THANKS
Ned’s recalling JFK and Reagan. . .
live blog is better than the television! he mumbled through his dial up connection.
“Senator Lieberman, the Democrats would welcome any bipartisan initiatives from you, but our definiton of bipartisan means voting with your party from time to time!”
Ned is exceptionally good tonight. He is by far the best in the debate.
Ned: stay true to our values and ideals. JFK – ich bin ein berliner
Reaga – tear down this wall
wiretaps – awesome power. we can do wiretaps within the law. need checks and balances
law allows pres to decide who is enemy combatant
strength of our ideals hearts and minds but we have wandered fm our ideals we are weaker
kennedy ich bin ein berliner world cheered reagan tear down this wall a stronger nation when we stay true to our ideals we have compromised in the eyes of the world
lot of time in communic connect the dots we can do that but all the more important that the pres act within the law court overview so not abuse wiretap and congress to act when pres acts as if above the law pres compromised that in a fundamental way and we’re a weaker country for it
Lamont is still doing the job.
rousing applause for Ned
Lieberman implying that he’s against warrantless wiretaps and arrests. Didn’t he vote for the MCA?
Lamont’s answer is great. His delivery is a little off, but it sounds like the audience likes it.
Ned – everyone talks about bipartisanship, we also need checks and balances
good line
he also channels Kennedy with Ich bin ein Berliner … the voice is so close, it’s scary
Oh, thank you, Ned. He just said, out loud in front of God and everybody: “We need checks and balances.”
Checks and balances!!!!!!!!!
And not for slush funds.
Accountability, checks and balances.
This president has compromised our liberty in fundamental ways, and our country is weaker for it. – Ned
Ned was EXCELLENT
NED: This President has to act within the law. Everyone talks about bi-partisanship. We need checks and balances. We need a Congress which will hold this President accountable if he acts above the law. We have compromised essential liberty…
Thus far, this has been Lamont’s best debate.
Joe is Rocking back and forth . H elooks autistic . . .
Joe appears to be experiencing acid reflux, behind Schles
crowd seems pro – Ned. Lot’s of cheers in the applause.
Schels, “serious reservations about the bill and he would have made sure habeus corpus was preserved. “Ned” You make a good point!
sch wd have habeus corpus for mili tribunals and review of patriot every 2 yrs
but dangerous world nuclear crater? first protect selves then make sure invid rights not abused. data mining says ned has good point but wiretapping need to do.
marky @ 176
did Ned say that? ;) please help us slow folks keep track of actual debate vs. editorial comments pleeze?
WOOO-HOOO for NED!
Well, great. Schlesinger is now re-invoking the mushroom cloud… Thanks, Alan. That may have changed votes from him back to Joe.
Schlesinger – Kind of wandered around on security vs. liberty. Seemed a bit incoherent to me.
Ned has just been teed upo to talk about 350k!!!
Hit it NED!
Q: what percentage of info in TV commercials and flyers is true?
Siun @ 184
Wow, Siun, I hadn’t really noticed the voice thing before… You’re absolutely right.
Ned’s not really answering the Q
Definitely Ned looks great. Confident as hell.
Sorry, VG,
I’m just making shit up:)
Sounds like Ned is handling himself fine without my help.
question what percent of ads true?
lamont
let’s get away from that
educated workforce, keep goodpaying jobs here, transportation system,NED IS STRONG, we’ve made no progress on that, bridge to nowhere, earmarks, so little for commuter and freight rail, need for economic
Ned is doing really well … much much better tonight
well, I think he’s passing. It was in response to a question from MArk Davis (lieber-ally)
Brought it back to issues. I guess thats good, but I wanted him to whack JOe!!
LOVE IT! Questioner says “Mr. Schlesinger” and Joe stands up! ROFLMAO!!! And Alan picking it up and running with it.
okay, schles may be entertaining, but it wears thin after a while
Schels, “all my adds are 100% accurate but they are dwarfed by the gentlemen behind me.
that was awkward – some kind of exchange between Alan and Steph, and then Joe proferring a lame hand shake
marky @ 204
Thanks-!!! ;) I’m sure there are a lot of people trying to channel to Ned..
I can’t believe this clown who’s talking now. Too bad, I wanted him to pull votes away from Joe.
Schlesinger channels Henny Youngman. Wants even funding of elections?
omg, did Foxwoods once let Schles do a ‘tight 10′ in the lounge ?!?!?
Marion in Savannah @ 209
“Umm, Mr. Schlesinger, you don’t mind if I steal some of your time–and your identity, too?”
sch joke about lamont going off topic w his answer to last question. aud laughs and screams
obscene amt money can be spent in a campaign 12m lamont 15m from special interests for lieb we cry out for level playing field in elections
[egregious comment here: he’s saying the REPUBLICANS are whining for a level playing field? here’s the world tiniest violin playing JUST FOR YOU]
now lieb so i quit
HAHAHAHA — Schlesinger just said “How many people could be helped by a $12 million check from Ned Lamont? Or a $15 million check from all the special interests that are supporting Joe Lieberman?”
JOE: Just started with a heavy sigh.
Joe is going overboard, imho.
Joe – heavy sigh.
can’t belienve ned says his ads are 100% true. jeers
Leiberman, “ned your ads are 0 untrue and constantly tell lies”.
Joe gets booed for accusing Ned of lying.
LIeberman just called Ned a liar Lots of Boos
Joe’s blowing it.
solai @ 212
Hopefully he can attrack the wingnut vote. There have to be a fair number of Republicans who can’t bring themselves to vote for Lieberman
sounds like they are singing Nazi songs at Joe
some kind of disruption in the hall
Liebushman getting heckled – someone singing in the audience – says it’s Lamont’s supporters
WTF is going on with people making noise??? WTF are they singing???
he’s calling Ned a liar
Joe just blew his “negative campaigning” line against Ned. He just made a vicious ad hominem attack and it’s very clear.
No matter how many millions of his families money Ned spends, the POLLS show Joe is loved.
He’s distorting my record *sniffle* *attack*
Jump ugly Ned
Neds pissed now GET em Ned
hello?
Ned fighting back hard. Lieberman just called me a liar
Joe now scolding Ned – here comes Ned for the beatdown -
“You’re record”
Ned just called Joe out after Ned called him a liar.
lieb you are part of the what is going on
soc sec you were for privat then against
3 terms limit then not
integrity what type of sen we’ve got, what type of sen we need
WILD APPLAUSE
it’s not negative just to use your words
huge applause
I bet it’s Code Pink disrupting the debates
Oh shit Schelsinger just wrecked Joe by calling him a wannabe Republican. Great joke line.
Damn, and I thought I already disliked Joe as much as I possibly could.
What a damned whore.
sch says lieb just wanted 3 terms as dem then 3 terms as a repub
dunno what they’re singing — any thoughts?
lieberman is a negative, petulant, bitchy little churl. Who listens to that whine and says “I’m voting for THAT guy?”
lamont wants another debate, lieb says ok, sch challenges them.
punaise @ 202
He shouldn’t answer leading questions. I don’t know how you can answer something like that truthfully, anyhow, other than to explain that all characterizations of a candidate by his opponent should be taken with a grain of salt. It’s not in their interests to tell the whole truth, and I should think that would be obvious.
test- long time no hear
This guy is a major buffoon.
Shlesinger just proposed more debates!!!
Lieberman and Lamont both appeared to agree.
Sounded like German ‘
Jane Hamsher @ 248
Iraq editorial by Joe last question!
Ned: that editorial go tme into this race
It’s got to be Nomentum people… They just started hollering again as soon as Ned stood up.
Awesome last question
punaise @ 243
I was hoping he would say that!
By far Lamont is doing the best job.
lamont behind in time?
question 4th trip to iraq progress is visible and withdrawal wd reverse
can we stop it?
person fm audience?
lamont scornful of lieb troops must stay satellite cell phones murtha stay the course not a winning a strategy we have a civil war lieb wrong then and wrong now every day putting more and more of our troops at risk 250m a day cd be better spent on port security and things here lamont is sounding very strong.
now lieb so i quit
Shit….
KO is on another rant
Ned is fighting like a Koi
What do I do?
the audience is laughing at Lieberman’s defense of his WSJ op-ed
Joe – I am not for stay the course – how many time do i have to say it
Joe: This is what I saw in Iraq (progress).
Unfortunately, beginning in Feb. the Terrorists made things go bad…I am NOT for stay the course! Then accuses Ned of giving up in Iraq.
What a fricking non answer.
lieb yr plan recipe for retreat and disaster.
one minute and half left.
Joe — “everything was going swell in iraq till they blew up the mosque in February.”

Sounded like German? Not the Horst Wessel song? Not even possible, is it???
KO calling the Republican party the greatest terrorist group in this country!
don’t ask don’t tell Q – Alan says that’s Joe’s Social Security position
Jane Hamsher @ 267
Shows how out of it he is. Exposed again.
Whew…..GO KO
question dont ask dont tell, be dishonest about sexual orientation
15 sec each
sch–policy is same as soc sec, dont ask dont tell, milit has respons, gay every right to be in military same as straight, no discrim
lieb–voted against it, judged as members of mili, reconsider, end policy
Schlessinger says gays should be allowed in the military.
Joe and ned both against don’t ask don’t tell
OMG.. I LOVE sch’s “3 terms as a Dem, 3 as a Repub” line. That is a killer!!
Here goes Joe chewing the clock, being heckled.
Schlesinger wants another debate because it’s the only exposure he’s going to get in this campaign. I’m sure he’s done more interviews over the past two weeks than in all the months before.
lamont i agree as well [no discrim]
lieb closing statement is being interrupted by persistent audience person
Poor Joe. Poor, poor Joe.
Who the HELL is doing that??? They’ve disrupted first Ned and now Joe… Who the hell are they?
Joe – “get out of here” to disruptors.
Steph – please escort them out
I think Joe and Alan are in love.
Code Pink
hecklers are unfortunate
Alan just yelled them down on Joe’s behalf
I’m afraid they have only disrupted Joe and he’ll use it against Ned.
Marion in Savannah @ 281
I’m in a coffee shop right across the street from the debate and the whole place just emptied out. Looks like they’re anticipating the end of this.
Bipartisan Joe. Holy Joe.
All is calm, all is bright…
Am I oblivious – I have no idea what code pink is. They are ridiculous.
wild applause after somebody spoke, alan
lieb thanks alan, out from under the bus. unfinished business terrorism global compet for jobs, rising $ health energy. not partisan fingerpointing. people ahead of party interest, how we saved sub base and jobs, how we will grow middle class end dependence foreign oil…..that was really unfair george….mod says i gave you the full time heavy applause
joe blamed the heckling on Lamont supporters before – that’s when Ned said he was a liar.
I couldn’t tell what these guys were singing or saying.
why would Code Pink give anyone a reason to be sympathetic to Joe ?
Alan: in the spirit of Halloween we have a US Senator here masquerading as a Republican
Now Alan is blasting Joe. And Joe is squirming behind his shoulder.
12String @ 291
Nor can I. They sure don’t like Joe, though. Whoever they are, they’re pretty annoying.
Code Pink are anti-war activists, they set up across from Walter Reed and protest the war. Some people think that butchering people is worse than disrupting a debate.
*xyz @ 289
KO is wild and on target!
cbl at 290 — because they were fucking obnoxious, rude and disruptive — and even Joe Lieberman should not have to put up with that at a debate. It was a shitty thing to do — and very selfish of
Code Pinkthe Larouchies (ed. CHS — my mistake from erroneous initial info. — sorry!) for doing it during the debate time. Protesting outside — fine. During the debate? Makes Lieberman sympathetic.Last word for Ned. Hit it out, Ned.
Holy cow what a messed up debate. I think Joe is going to win major points with the public for being called out by people in the audience, and I really wish Ned had jumped up and yelled like Schlesinger did for them to shut up.
Nice close for Ned.
Hope there are more debates.
ned scolds hecklers
punaise @ 293
Spew!
Lamont sounds like Bobby Kennedy.
I’d also make sure they were not Joe plants, it’s not beyond him or Rove.
Code Pink crashed the GOP convention in 2004 & got dragged out.
They planned a demonstration outside of the debate today.
http://www.codepinkalert.org/a…..p;type=176
Lamont wants our kids to be proud of us.
Nice flash of quiet passion from Ned at the end.
Ned Lamont sure does look like a Senator!
sch we can disagree on policy but no excuse for such an outburst
millionaire running as dem

pretty strong finish by Ned
Christy Hardin Smith @ 298
Hear, hear.
Ned won, folks.
Ned won.
Words fail me, when I try to describe my reaction to Joe Lieberman tonight.
It’s a good thing I haven’t had dinner yet.
I hope you get that that was the point of my question -
Code Pink lost my respect on that one.
Ned won – on the merits.
oddball @ 269

Agreed.
cbl @ 314
Valley Girl @ 315
I agree totally.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 296
are you sure that was code pink? i’ve done actions with them, and that didn’t sound like them AT ALL.
I was afraid they were going to do something like that.
On the other hand – if Joe blames the heckling on Lamont supporters and then it is shown to be Code Pink – then he looks like a bigger asshat
I just uned in to hear Alan’s and Ned’s closing. Ned was great. Somebody earlier mentioned that C-SPAN was going to carry it at 11 pm. Does anyone know whether that’s the case?
What the hell were the hecklers singing?
Ned showed himself to be the passionate advocate for his ideals that attracts me and so many to his campaign.
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.
Go Ned!
I thought Ned knocked this one out of the park, Schlesinger got in some good zingers (I wonder if he has done stand-up — or maybe his courtroom work has just honed his timing?), and Joe was whiny, petulant, crabby and making faces the entire time while either of the other two were speaking.
I do wish Ned had yelled at the asinine hecklers. And I hope that the press is decent enough to do honest reporting about who they were — because Joe tried to smear Ned with them, knowing that they are an unaffiliated group that already follows him around the state and protests his stance on the war. It’s not new for Lieberman — that he could stand there and act like it was goes right to the heart of what Pach was saying about Joe’s lying ability.
that’s all i am writing. hope it was helpful for people at the lake.
sorry it wasn’t up to my usual steno standards but i’m a little tired after working all day. thanks to all experienced and newbie livebloggers who jumped in to help others know what happened here. inclu possibly jane. we do what we can.
Yea Ned !
Way back. Waaaaayyyy Back! It’s gone!
MVP – Ned
Honorable Mention – Alan
I teared up at the end. Go Ned.
Cozumel @ 314
Valley Girl @ 315
What they did was really stupid. Lieberman’s too good at playing the victim – don’t give him a chance to do it.
Just finished watching the debate, didn’t read the comments yet, I’ll go back and read everyone, but I just have to say Ned just looked and sounded soooo JFK.
I hope they ID the disrupter. I want to know who he/they are really representing.
ShermanDem @ 330
yes. i’d be suprised as hell if that was really a code pink action. seriously doubt it.
Small, mean, petty comment… Is it just me, or is Alan Schlesinger’s head WAY too small for his body? Makes me nuts to look at him.
Sherman at 330 — me, too. I’m getting conflicting reports now via e-mail — but it was Ned’s staff folks who were trying to eject the asshats from the hall — that Stephanopolous asked to help out.
OT….But you MUST watch Olbermans special comment..THE BEST EVER!
I love that man!
Lieberman is vulnerable an many things. But Iraq is what Joe fears most. I hope Lamont hammers Lieberman on Iraq.
the disrupters were way out of line, shame on them.
JPL @ 322
That’s what my schedule says. 11pm C-Span 1
Okay- looks like we’ll have to follow up to see if it really was Code Pink. That is worth looking into.
Franco @ 336
I missed a special comment??? RATS! But I will rely on C&L to capture it for me.
Marion in Savannah @ 334
Of course, it is. He’s a wingnut….
Thanks a million to all of you live blogging this. It was the only way I could take it without being a total stress ball. I’ve gotten to the point where it’s worse watching or listening to Lieberman than Bush. You guys are great!
Ned won.
Code Pink just lost a third of their sympathizers.
not one mention of the petty cash, right?
Yea, don’t jump to conclusions on who they were, Joe will do that.
Was Lieberman’s lobbyist friend, Richard whatshisface, dressed up in demonstrator drag?!
Thanks so much to all live bloggers.
Twisted Martini @

Ahhh — they were Larouche supporters. Well, that explains a lot. SIGH Jane has a new post up top, gang.
As far as the debate tonight, Senator Lamont blew Joe and that other guy out the door.
Jesus. Joe called Ned a liar, and MY CONNECTION DIED! missed the rest.
Ned was on fire, please tell me he smacked droopy and finished strong.
THANKS Bloggers…
And I hope that the press is decent enough to do honest reporting about who they were — because Joe tried to smear Ned with them, knowing that they are an unaffiliated group that already follows him around the state and protests his stance on the war. It’s not new for Lieberman — that he could stand there and act like it was goes right to the heart of what Pach was saying about Joe’s lying ability.
Hi,
I just watched the debate, too, and I didn’t know that Lieberman was aware of this group before tonight. He turned to Ned and said – “your supporters” or something like that.
Wow, shame on Joe if he knew who they were, and said that to Ned.
I wouldn’t put it past Joe to plant them and then blame Ned.
egregious @ 341
please, a request…. are you sure it was a code pink action (and not a provocature)? and if not, would it be ok to condemn the action w/o blaming code pink?
Cozumel @ 317
Keith was on fire yet again!
I don’t think Code Pink would do anything to hurt Lamont.
punaise @ 345
Well, no question was asked, and only 90 seconds for closing. Makes it a bitch to introduce a new topic at the end.
We should not assume code pink were the disrupters. Lieber-youth have earned a petty reputation in CT.
The protesters screwed up. Now we are talking about them rather than about how good Lamont was and how whiny Joe is.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 325
Damn right. They really pissed me off. I couldn’t believe that Lamont supporters would be that rude. If they were SHAME ON THEM, they didn’t help Lamont at all.
On the other hand, I couldn’t help but wonder if Joe didn’t set them up on purpose with some $100 bills. He appears to enjoy playing the victim.
Jane’s new thread
Christy Hardin Smith @ 348
christy, thanks for the quick info…
Christy Hardin Smith @ 350
Larouche is still alive??? Who knew…. and who cares….
If Joe enjoys playing the victim, I’m willing to pony up some money to set up a session with Joe and Mariska Hargitay, who can wear her cop’s outfit and perfect make-up while she busts his ass for lying and petty cash infractions.
Selise at 362 — you are welcome — I got erroneous info from an initial e-mail — and then had someone there track things down for me at the same time Jane was having someone track it down for her. *g* It’s been that kind of day…and, frankly, I’m very relieved it was NOT Code Pink.
I want to ask a question as someone who doesn’t post here (or on any political site, really), but I don’t want to get jumped on as a “concern troll”.
I’m a registered Democrat in Maryland, so I don’t have any constituent stake in the Connecticut race (although I recognize the stakes at a larger level). I read new media far more than newspapers, and I don’t watch cable TV anymore (it’s insipid), so I consider myself well informed on the issues, the races, etc.
The question I have is why is everyone so exorcized about this particular race? The races between Allen and Web and Ford and Corker and Talent and McCaskill–all of those are much closer, and just as critical to the balance of the Senate. And yet I come to FDL every day, and I would bet one-third of the stories are Lieberman related. And in reading them I can see that Joe Lieberman causes absolute teeth-grinding anger in people–and people not from Connecticut–like no other race.
Although I don’t think it makes a lot of sense, I’m not criticizing that view, that passion. I’m just curip]ous what it is about this race that drives people the most.
Someone lay it out for a smart guy from MD. Help me understand.
Aaaand of course I meant Webb and McCaskill. Stupid typos.
T.Atkinson at 366 — I can’t speak for everyone here, but for me, the last three straws on Lieberman were: (1) his cloture vote on Alito, while parading around and proclaiming his pro=choice stance; (2) his “short ride to another hospital” for a rape victim who can’t get Plan B contraceptives comment — as a rape survivor myself, I cannot tell you how angry that one callous, thoughtless comment made me; and (3) his finger-wagging STFU speech to Democrats who dared criticize President Bush on Iraq.
Lieberman has long been a turncoat in faux bi-partisan clothing who was willing to sell out the party so long as it aggrandized his view of Joe and helped to shore up his stature somehow. But he represents a very blue state — so going against Joe helps the party apparatus enforce a bit more discipline on other wavering members and it sends a message — represent your constituents, not your ego. His refusal to abide by the will of the Democrats in the primary only solidified this bad impression of him for me. But that’s just me.
T. Atkinson @ 366
You might want to jump to the new thread to get answers, but before I do, let me tell you how I feel.
I’m a nutmegger, so I can’t answer from others perspectives. Joe has always felt like a traitor in our midst to me.
He can be right on so many little issues, yet so god awfully wrong on the biggest and most important ones. Or maybe I should say, he can be left on the little issues and too far right on the biggest ones.
T Atkinson, we need Ned for so many reasons, but a big one for me is that Lieberman, when the Ds take the senate, he would be chair of the committee that would head governmental affair investigations. Can you see Bush’s BFF Joe really digging into the muck, or do you think he will just blow smoke up our skirts? I’m betting on smoke, Joe has to go.
T. Atkinson @ 366
Speaking for myself only. There are many reasons I don’t like Lieberman. Chief among these is the fact that Mr. Lieberman lost the Democratic primary. Lieberman should not be in this race and should be supporting Ned Lamont, the winner of the primary. And of course there is the matter of Lieberman’s continued support for the Iraq war.
Christy, thanks for the response. I’ve read FDL, and your comments, for a while, and I appreciate your taking the time to respond. Nice appearance on C-Span the other day, as well. I heard it on the radio here in D.C.
Valley Girl @ 94
707!
If you feel like there is too much pressure on you, there are really only three things that are truly necessary:
1. Breathe in
2. Breathe out
3. Care for your babies (or elderly)
That’s it! EVERYTHING else can wait.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 350
Thanks for clearing that up. I was about to jump to a conclusion :). Whoever they were, they weren’t doing themselves or us any favors.
T. Atkinson at 372 — aw, thanks much. I appreciate it. I still haven’t gotten up the nerve to watch our TIVO of it. *g* But I got a lot of complimentary e-mails from self-identified Republicans, so I’m hoping that means something good for our side for the upcoming election. And we do talk a LOT about other races — take a peek at our Blue America topic link on the right hand column and see how many candidates we’ve been able to cover. Between that and adwatch, we’ve hit just about every major race at one point or another. :)
punaise @ 345
I was surprised by that, but it must be the judgment of Swan that it was better handled another way. I trust him. Good czar above the fray?
Urban Pirate @ 352
Ned smacked droopy and finished strong. He was WONDERFUL.
selise @ 355
You’re right, I apologize. I have no knowledge of who it is, just piling on based on rumors. I’m sorry.
Why vote for Joe?
If you’re a Republican, the answer’s a no-brainer.
But if you’re a Connecticut Democrat who currently intends to vote for Joe, please consider the consequences of doing so.
A vote for Lieberman is a vote to place the party’s agenda into the hands of a blackmailer.
Under the BEST case scenario the Democrats will gain majority control of the Senate with 51 vs 49 seats.
That 51st seat will be held by Lamont or Lieberman.
If Lieberman is the victor we can forget about:
Health care reform.
Checking the expansion of excutive power.
Blocking the confirmation of right wing judges.
Changing course in our foreign policy.
Conducting meaningful oversight hearings.
Every action or legislation contemplated by the party will be held hostage to the personal ideology of Joe Lieberman. Why? Because if Joe don’t like it, he simply walks across the aisle. Bye bye committee chairs. Bye bye majority control. Bye bye progressive legislation. Joe doesn’t even have to articulate the threat. The Democratic party will KNOW what’s at stake, and they won’t risk a return to minority status. This is why the Republican party is so supportive of Lieberman.
Recent polling shows that 35% of the Democrats in Connecticut currently intend to vote for Lieberman. Undoubtedly these voters think the election is about one Democrat versus another. In reality, it’s about a Democrat versus an Opportunist. Ask yourself, do you want to give Joe the opportunity to ensure that nothing changes for the next two years?
The senate race in Connecticut is the single most important contest on November 7. Please vote responsibly.
