Meanwhile, over at Atlas Juggs, we learn what's really important in Connecticut politics right now.
Jane!
Swanny!
What I’d like to know is what were the origins of all this so called petty cash?
Medina on the DoddPod contents:
She oughta know about needing help, considering how much help she needed re the anonymous personage she quoted about the LieberCash being “probably not illegal.” On the bright side, we managed to get the NYTimes “blog” to accept comments. How cool is that?
Oklahoma kiddo @ 1
Karl got JimmyJeff to turn over some tips?
Teddy #3 — I am soooo impressed. You got the NYT to correct!
http://empirezone.blogs.nytime.....nnecticut/
I thought Atlas Juggs was our pal Pammy the Lawn Guyland Vlogger…it’s so confusing
punaise @ 6
You mean that wasn’t Pam Atlas?
Wow. My bad.
Jane Hamsher @ 5
awesome, TSF!
Jane Hamsher @ 5
Yeah, I’ve moved up to the majors, now that WaPo’s Little Debbie is all-local-all-the-time.
Per others prior thread, I was thrilled that the NYT’s saw fit to publish TeddySanFran and my comments along with other Ned supporters. I left this as a response, I hope they publish this too.
Bold is mine.
What does accountability mean? Lindsey Graham says we should blame the generals (the guys Bush listens to) for the debacle in Iraq:
Sen. Graham Blames the Generals
“I don’t think that word means what you think it means.” — Princess Bride
TJ said: The Dems weren’t coming to campaign with Lamont because “Lamont is going to lose and the Dems will have to work with Lieberman after he wins.”
That’s circular logic and a self-fulfilling prophesy. If the Dem party had slapped Joe down in August and had fully supported the Democratic candidate - Lamont have won in a cakewalk. Instead the Dems have allowed Lieberman to fracture Connecticut and make a mockery out of our elective process.
Bill Clinton (who I now despise and the DCL crowd) have given aid and comfort to Joe while they hypocritically nodded to Ned and then refuse to support him. (I do not consider Wesley Clark, John Edwards, Howard Dean or John Kerry as part of the Dem leadership or powerholders).
And Rove’s money has allowed Lieberman to play two months worth of negative and untrue ads about Lamont. Not to mention the assist BushCo gave Lieberman by saying Lamont and his supporters were terrorist lovers and then launching an international terror alert.
After this election the Dem party will never get another my vote, my money or my time/talent. I think the netroots should totally boycott everyone in the Dem party except the progressive funded through ActBlue.
This is the end of the road for a 40 year Dem activist.
Regarding that link, I like Senator Dodd’s iPod list. Here’s that link just in case:
http://empirezone.blogs.nytime.....e-doddpod/
What songs from this century could improve it significantly?
I doubt this will make any difference in the election. Breaking campaign finance law doesn’t even merit a blip on most people’s radar. I expect Lieberman will get a slap on the wrist from the FEC after he wins, but that’s it.
Lie-berman will stop at nothing to usurp the Democratic takeover of congress.
DSCC
DNC
Bill Clinton,
WHERE ARE YOU, CAN’T YOU UNDRESS THIS POSER
PS I thought Atlas Juggs would be Pammy too
TJ, there’s evidence at this point that he broke Federal and State employment law too.
If the Dem party had slapped Joe down in August and had fully supported the Democratic candidate - Lamont have won in a cakewalk.
BS. If these Dem heavyweights couldn’t even swing the primary election, where only Democrats were voting, how could they possibly swing the general election, where the majority of voters will be independents and Republicans?
Christ, people, try to think about this stuff at least a little bit.
TJ @ 14
Tom Swan makes the great point that “petty cash” to RGJoe is probably more than Alan Schlesinger, the actual GOP candidate, will raise and spend in the entire general election. RGJoe will try to brush off this “technicality” the first, and probably second, times it’s raised in the debate this evening. I hope George Steph read my Spotlight!
TJ @ 17
Well, first of all, we DO think about it, and mostly a lot. But secondly, the ARG poll shows Dems split 66% for NED and 34% for L4L. A clear Democratic show of support — not just the unity breakfast, but national Dems as well — would have shamed RGJoe to the corner he belongs in. And made real clear to low-information Democratic voters who the real Democrat is.
John Casper @ 16
TJ’s trolling, I doubt quoting the law is going to make any difference to him.
OT: Good grief. I’m listening to Taylor Marsh’s audio broadcast. She’s playing the Bush interview with George Stephanopolous (sp?). Just in the two minutes, he said:
- We have never been about staying the course in Iraq.
- He thinks it’s a great idea to have outside experts review the Iraq situation. He was referring, of course, to the Baker-Hamilton commission. Why he didn’t listen to any of the outside experts who have already provided input is not clear.
- When asked “Can you see any possibility that U.S. troops will leave Iraq before you’re out of office?”, he replied “No. Well, U.S. troops are leaving Iraq all the time.”
Even by the standards of politicians, he’s a moron.
oops, sorry.
Could someone eliminate my comment #146 last thread? It was left in moderation. It was long and by now more than irrelevant.
Lose this asshole.
ifthethunderdontgetya @ 20
TJ @

If Lamont was able to dissuade Connecticut voters that Lieberman was a defacto Democrat, something that national Dems could have been very useful with, it would have helped him significantly.
Christ, people, think before you press “submit.”
A clear Democratic show of support — not just the unity breakfast, but national Dems as well — would have shamed RGJoe to the corner he belongs in.
“Shamed him into a corner?” What does that even mean?
And given that a “clear Democratic show of support” couldn’t even win the Democratic primary for Lieberman, why is it suddenly supposed to magically make a difference for Lamont in an election where most of the voters will not be Democrats?
Troll Juice in the Kool Aid today.
Can I get a rulebook update, please? If thinking is required, lotsa us are toast.
TJ @ 17
We do think about this. Why don’t you think about this:
Currently Joe gets 34% of Dem votes and Ned 66%. If the party, and people like the Big Dog, came out strong for Ned and got his share up to where it really belongs, say 80%, since Dems are 34% of CT voters that would mean a 9.5% swing for Lamont. That’s enough to swing the election right there.
punaise @ 27
It’s no substitute for real sugar.
“Christ, people, try to think about this stuff at least a little bit.”
You’re the one who’s not thinking it through.
Clinton, Gore, and others could have given Joe no choice, but to support Ned after the primary. They chose not to do that and that allowed Joe to leverage all the name recognition he got as Gore’s Veep candidate and soak up more GOP money.
Regardless of who wins in CT, Ned provided enormous support to Brown in Ohio and Casey in PA, because the GOP won’t support those Senate races anymore, financially.
We’re big tent here, we’re moving on.
Your throwing in the towell on Ned is pathetic and muddled thinking. He’s down, but he’s not down 17. If you have some practical reason
punaise-
check my commnet at 155, EPU’d from the previous thread. Gerundipity, my word!
TJ @ 3:49 pm (#26)
Your memory of that time is highly selective, if not downright delusional. A former U.S. President, and several U.S. Senators and Congressman endorsed Lieberman in the primary. In what universe is that a “clear Democratic show of support” for Lamont?
If the party, and people like the Big Dog, came out strong for Ned and got his share up to where it really belongs, say 80%,
And why are Democratic voters expected to listen to “the party” now when they didn’t listen to “the party” in the primary?
I haven’t yet heard an answer to that question.
ifthethunderdontgetya @ 30
it was a hit song by the RGs:
Jane Hamsher @ 25
Jane, did you and I just get suckered in to feeding a troll?
TeddySanFran @ 3:51 pm (#28)
Yes, when did that become a rule? I’m starting to suspect someone’s been rewriting it in the middle of the night.
scarecrow @ 11
My impression is that ownership of the Iraq mess lies with Bush, Cheney and both houses of Congress. To blame negative outcomes on bad advice is disingenuous and cowardly at best.
TJ @
26
If you’ve got a learning disability just say so and we’ll give you a pass, but the DSCC is not supposed to involve themselves in primary politics, and by in large they didn’t.
I haven’t yet heard an answer to that question.
Yessah Massa, I’m acomin’ just as fast as I can massa’
Morris Sheppard @ 36
Yeah but every once in a while you’ve got to deliver one for the crowd.
Besides, I’m honored whenever Dangerstein stops by.
TeddySanFran @ 28
Nah, you’re as good as sliced bread. And Jane is just practicing. Well done.
Joe always had the ability to blackmail the party, but most assumed that he wouldn’t do it and would instead do the honorable thing once he got over his hurt and pride. What the party has now learned, if they didn’t know before, is that Joe Lieberman has no honor; he only cares about himself. When the guy behaves that way, there’s little the Dems can do except call out his lack of honor and lack of trustworthiness. That’s where courageous Dem leaders could help, but it does take courage, because Joe is essentially blackmailing them — the implicit threat to go Repub and/or vote with the Repubs on issues critical to Dems.
We should just keep pounding on Joe’s credibility and phony image, and not worry about the commenter.
TJ @ 17
Hmmm - What Dem heavy weights during the primary? Bill was the only one who showed up for Joe - and actually, his visit made a significant difference for Joe. He would have lost by a lot more than 4 points.
One of the only reasons why some Unaffiliated or Republicans are thinking about voting for Joe (and they haven’t walked into that voting booth yet) is that he claims he’s been told that he will get chairmanship of some key committees. CT residents want the “clout” that will bring. Running as an Independent against the rightful Dem nominee - why is anyone telling Joe he will be given chairmanships?
He also says he will caucus with the Dems - but he’s taking Republican & lobbyist money. That’s another reason why I would hope the Dem party would have some principles and take a stand on this.
TJ @ 34
That’s because you haven’t asked that question until now.
Since Ned’s victory was fairly close, obviously a large percentage of Dem voters did listen to the party in the primary. I think a lot of those same voters would be persuaded to go with Lamont if the leadership made that point loud and clear.
Besides, I’m honored whenever Dangerstein stops by
ROFLMAO
Morris Sheppard @ 32
well, it was getting a bit tense down there. someone darn near dangled a modifier. On the other hand, I don’t foresee Cool Hand Schlesinger calling for a syntax.
Little story that stays on topic:
Teaching my 8th graders today about campaigns/elections and the billions that get spent. The students feel that the money corrupts the process. (You don’t say!)
Anyways, playing devil’s advocate I say, “but it takes a lot of money to run a campaign, tv and radio ads, lawn signs, paying your volunteers…”
Half the class was on it like bees on honey: “YOU DON’T PAY VOLUNTEERS!”
13 year olds get it…
There are a handful of big Demo sluggers who could have really given a hand up to Lamont. And didn’t. I for one will not forget these irresponsible Dems.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 38
I agree. I was just struck at how Sen. Graham “supports the troops.” And I’m trying to imagine what’s going through the minds of the Generals in Iraq and the Pentagon, particularly those who had concerns all along but stuffed it out of a sense of duty and obeying the chain of command. When you attack the General Staff, don’t expect them to defend you when the revolution comes.
Skilling sentenced to 24 years.
John Casper @ 45
he’s just flaunting his new body wax job
Good point, scarecrow @ 42. And let’s not forget, in your heart, you know he’s last.
punaise @ 46
You and Jane at 41 with her “besides, I’m honored whenever Dangerstein stops by.” were funny enough to make me nearly split my infinitives laughing.
Morris Sheppard @ 53
I’ll take that as a complement
so … when’s the debate and where can we watch it?
eager to see what happens next!
Joe’s been doing this long enough to know the rules. What an arrogant horses patoot to think he’s entitled to make up his own rules. I haven’t had a chance to catch up on all the details, so won’t comment beyond that, but oh my!Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.
Cujo unloads on Medina in the NYT’s:

Since the FEC probably won’t do anything until after the election, it actually makes it more incumbent upon journalists to get in there and see what they can find on this story.
Unless, like
Atlas Juggsthe NYT, they’re more concerned on what’s on the fucking IPod of someone who’s not even up for re-election and we’re two weeks outside of election day.Cujo359 @

Eve of Destruction??? Somehow seems awfully au courant…
Jane,
I don’t get Medina. WTF? What happened?
If you’ve got a learning disability just say so and we’ll give you a pass, but the DSCC is not supposed to involve themselves in primary politics, and by in large they didn’t.
And who pays any attention to what the DSCC says? Bill Clinton is at least a name a lot of people know.
Look, if people here just want to bitch about how they got screwed by the DC establishment, that’s fine and I’ll leave you to it. But for anyone who’s interested in the real reasons Lamont lost this election, this is a really good place to start:
http://www.dailykos.com/commen.....32/162#162
TJ @ 61
“Tom appeared on the sidewalk with a bucket of whitewash and a long-handled brush. He surveyed the fence, and all gladness left him and a deep melancholy settled down upon his spirit. Thirty yards of board fence nine feet high. Life to him seemed hollow, and existence but a burden. Sighing, he dipped his brush and passed it along the topmost plank; repeated the operation; did it again; compared the insignificant whitewashed streak with the far-reaching continent of unwhitewashed fence, and sat down on a tree-box discouraged. “
punaise @54
Which is how it was meant, of course.
Atlas Juggs? Who’s been looking under my mattress?
TJ - Lamont hasn’t lost the election. Let’s just wait until November 8th. Clearly, you have no idea what’s going on in Connecticut.
Medina has editors who don’t want her to tell the truth.
Marion in Savannah @ 4:09 pm (#59)
Yes, it does, but has anyone covered it in this century? I suppose you could add “Not Ready To Make Nice” to the list, too, along with “American Idiot”.
Throw “Won’t get fooled again” in there.

Editor from hell?
Pachacutec @ 66
That’s one of the reasons I mentioned the editorial staff in my response. The other is that it just seems like the obvious ironies should have occured to somebody before that story was published, even if Medina wasn’t aware of them.
TJ at 4:12 pm, again, you’re the one who isn’t thinking it through. Look at the polls. Whatever “happened,” was after September 25, which contradicts the diary you linked to.
Ned’s behind, but especially with Iraq going south the way it is, he isn’t toast, by a long shot.
TRex @ 70
It was nice of you to bottle up some of what you’ve been drinking and send it to the campaign. I’m sure they appreciated it, TRex.
I just looked at C-SPAN’s website to see when they are showing the CT debate.
C-SPAN still has Lieberman listed as a (D)!
Check it out:

Gas prices continue to decline at an increasingly slow rate. There is a continued attempt to bid the oil market down. I don’t think this can be sustained but it probably will keep oil prices low (under $60/bbl) until near or after the elections. This will also have a general effect on gasoline prices.
There may be some negative speculation here and I may be underestimating the impact of the lack of confidence that OPEC can enforce production cuts. I tended to discount the announcement and took it as pretty much of a given that OPEC would be unable to enact meaningful cuts.

Damn! I keep forgetting we’re in a whole new century now! (Senility can be SUCH a bitch!) Well, as a card-carrying old fart I turned the radio off (except for classical) when disco happened. So count me as tabula rasa for 21st Century “music.”
Ned ought to show up at the debate with three things….
1) a couple of pages of HIS OWN petty cash ledgers
2) A CD with ALL his petty cash expenditures on it…
3) a list of some of Lieberman’s small campaign contributors…
then at the opportune time, pull out the papers and say
“Joe….you’ve been in the Senate for 12 years, you are supposedly “Mr. Ethics”….how come you had a $387,000 slush fund in the primaries. How come you can’t provide the legally mandated accounts that look like this (pull out papers). How come you can’t provide the legally required full accounting that I have on this? (pulls out CD.) Why can’t you show Jane Smith, who gave you $25 last April, or John Jones, who gave you $10 last may, that their money isn’t sitting in the bank account of your “advisors”, or was used to buy votes?
