for the week ending 10/21/06
Hola! Omnipresent One here, back for another lecture on responsibility and choice. I understand that over the past 2000 years or so, you people have managed to get the whole "God's Will vs. free will" thing ass backwards. You do realize, don't you, that I've got an entire universe to run, and that I don't get my jollies micromanaging every sentient being on your planet. Just because I'm the Almighty doesn't mean you can avoid responsibility for your actions by pointing an accusatory finger at me. I know I certainly didn't will the old guy with the funny hat to wear red Prada shoes with a green tablecloth. And if some rich idiot son supposedly gives up drinking because he likes the cut of my jib, that's his choice. I must admit, it would've been nice if he actually gave up the drink like he promised, but I digress.
Look, I'm the Creator, not the Facilitator. I don't spend my days whispering in the ears of football players, televangelists or world leaders. Why, you ask? (I know you're asking, trust me on this.) Because it's not my management style . . . well, Moses aside -- that was a one-off. I owed him big time for dumping that hottie, Nefertiri. Also, it sets a really bad precedent. I talk to one world leader, then the next thing you know, somebody else is alleging that I told him something opposite and the whole thing spirals out of control faster than a George Allen press conference. And do NOT get me started on that guy.
All that being said, when I heard Bush declaring that I told him his role in life was to defeat terrorism and promote democracy through crusades in the Middle East, and that General Pace person claiming that I was behind his boss' decisions about the clusterfuck, pardon my French, in Mesopotamia, I knew I was eventually going to have to intervene. I don't ordinarily do this, but frankly, I'm just getting really tired of the power-grabs, hypocrisy and whining in My name coming from the chuckleheads running your country.
So here's the deal I'm offering: George Bush, Donald Rumsfeld, and their buddies Condi Rice, Alberto Gonzales and the rest are going to have to answer to the Pelosi posse after November 7 and all of the attendant investigations that such a change in leadership might encourage, if you follow my drift *cough*Watergate*cough*. Note, please, that I'm going to leave war profiteer Dick Cheney to my old roommate, Satan. He'll know what to do with him. In return, stop acting like such babies! Own up to your mistakes and make some kind of effort not to repeat them. Learn how to say, "Sorry, my bad." And stop with the hiding out in rehab centers; you're not fooling anyone.
Now if you'll excuse me, I've got some galaxies to whip up. Those NASA people are so easily entertained.

Ah, the whiff of Republican desperation. An open carton of 3 week-old curdled milk smells better. This very public exhibition of spontaneous combustion by Republican candidates might explain why the RNC hauled out the increasingly petulant Bush to campaign and high-kick like a drunken chorine, and to sit down for "serious" interviews with the likes of Bill Orally.
And only the Rude Pundit can withstand such an interview and sum it up thusly:
Watching O'Reilly interview Bush is like watching a horny mongoose hump a steering wheel.
Steve Soto at The Left Coaster posits some perfectly valid questions for the Chimperor. Makes no never mind that they're rhetorical.
Sadly, No!'s Brad R. disembowels the Administration's plan to replace the democratically elected Iraqi government.
BooMan at his Booman Tribune reflects on the Republican pretzelesque response to a Pelosi-led House.
The Omnipotent Poobah of Snark, James Wolcott, hunkered down in his new hunting lodge, has The Corner's K-Lo (Kathryn Jean Lopez, a/k/a the future seventh Mrs. Mitt Romney) in the cross-hairs. I could keep going with that reference, but I think it's best for all parties involved if I stop right now. Instead, I'll just point you to Rising Hegemon's Attaturk, who suffers a minor mind-meld with Wolcott.
Meanwhile, over at the Dirksen Senate Office Building:
TBogg outdoes himself lampooning Rick "Gamgee" Santorum's "Eye of Mordor" speech, while August J. Pollack, cartoonist extraordinaire (and so young...sigh), sees no real need to panic if, heaven forfend, Lieberman wins. TAPPED's Charles Pierce reviews Joe Klein's valentine to Barack Obama. DB, over at Skippy the Bush Kangaroo, offers candidate Tom Kean, Jr. a shoulder to cry on. And as far as Senate dick jokes go, Richie McWhite at Little Green Fascists makes me chortle like Beavis and/or Butthead.
Spocko at Spocko's Brain runs down the rejected tag lines for Bush's Death to Habeas Corpus signing speech. P. O'Neill at Best of Both Worlds gets to the nut of the Preznit's new powers.
Steve M. at No More Mister Nice Blog heaves a mighty sigh at the stupidity exhibited at lucianne.com and Roy Edroso at alicublog gets to wear the "seven with one blow" sash.
Finally, Steve O. at Bring it On! reveals the secret behind Stephen Colbert's "You're On Notice" board. Now everybody's going to want one.

The pic of our President, up top, is sooo Georgie. It captures the smallness of this little man so overwhelming well.

In Foxx campaign, funds go far and wide
She gives large amounts to GOP races across U.S.
U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx issued a mass e-mail two weeks ago pleading for money for her re-election in the 5th Congressional District. “Some people say I’m in a “safe” district but the Democrats knock off one “safe” person each year - And they have their sights set on the 5th District. Although this promises to be a difficult few weeks of the campaign, with your help I know that we will win,” Foxx said in the e-mail.
It goes on to say that she also must run against the liberal bias of certain media organizations: “The Democrats, New York Times and Winston-Salem Journals of the world want to distort my record of conservative and responsive service.”

Perhaps some years down the line the President can hire Harriet Miers as his criminal defense attorney. If this individual is deemed good enough to be George’s counsel in the WH, and to be promoted by Bush to the SCOTUS, then she ought to be one great and fine legal mind. That is if course if Ms. Miers is not in the dock herself. If not Miers, who? Gonzales? Well, that’s assuming he not in trouble himself for helping to undermine the U.S. Constitution. It’s no wonder the President is pouting. As usual. He’s such a gooood pouter and I’ve heard, tantrum thrower. Babs…come get your little boy.

Great picture of Clusterfuck indeed - makes me wonder who the shadowy fellow is in the background - Karl - or maybe Jeff - or if a bit older could be Jack? Pathetic in any event.
Help me figure something out here. Why are people saying we have to win 2 of the 3 VA, TN, MO, if we only need 6 to win?
I count: Ohio, Penn, Montana, Rhode Island, and Minnesota as going from R currently to D next month. Is this somehow wrong?
Yes if NJ goes flooey then we need 2/3, but otherwise?
Thx.
Assuming we hold New Jersey- and I think we will, we need to win both Missouri and Tennessee- and both are even money bets at the moment- that puts the odds of regaining the senate at one in four. Not great odds- but could happen.

EGREGIOUS
Here’s the LONG calculation:
Seats in play:
Pennsylvania
Ohio
Rhode Island
Montana
(assume dems win these- net takeover of four seats)
New Jersey
(assume dems Hold this one- still a net takeover of four)
Virginia
(assume dems lose this- still a net takeover of four)
Missouri
Tennessee
These are both toss ups- and dems would need both to get to a net takeover of six and take the senate back.
‘It’s a sin to tell a lie, la la la…’
;>)
(ot and all but … I do not like calculating takeover based on the Joe is a D assumption - he is not, will not vote with us and is funded by Rs - even as shorthand, I think this is a bad calculation - and I still think Ned can do it!)
Thanks rw. I was assuming Dayton of MN was a Republican, oops.
And btw we are going for a WIN here for Webb in Virginia. We’ve got great ground game.

As presently constituted, the Senate’s membership consists of 55 Republicans, 44 Democrats, and one independent, James Jeffords (I-VT), who is retiring at the end of this term. To assure that at least 51 Democrats are in the Senate this coming January, it will be necessary for the Democrats to pick up at least two of these three seats (VA, TN, and MO) in addition to the other five seats you mentioned. There is, of course, an additional complication, of which many of us are well aware, exerting a profound effect on our electoral analysis: the outcome of the U.S. Senate race in Connecticut.
Hey Gang-
I’ve been gone for the last two weeks…too much work to follow the comments everyday…but just checked in. Did Christie have a death in her family?
darkblack @ 35
I’ve taken to calling him Preznit Tommy Flanagan.
Siun @ 36
I agree. To keep control of the Senate, the Rethugs will offer Joe the moon - and he’ll take it.
If you assume that joe is a gooper and that he’s gonna win- then dems need to win Virginia to counterbalance (not likely)–if ya think Lamont’s gonna win- then you can use the calculation unchanged.
DairyMaid @ 41
Christy’s great uncle died and the funeral is today.
Thanks MayDaze.
Stephen- a gain of six seats gives the dems the senate.

There is no biblical authority for the proposition that “God eats”–so what does He need with table manners.
There is some biblical authority for the proposition that God enjoys walking in the garden in the cool part of the day- but there is also good biblical authority for the proposition that God has no body- so there ya go.

Poll quoted on WCBS NY radio this morning had Mendendez up by 9, which exceeds the MOE.
I don’t like his military commissins/torture vote, but I’ll remember that for next time.
This year Dems.
If it’s 51-49 with Liarman (L-CT) and he switches parties, his elective life is over. The D’s in CT who supported him will never do so again. I’d imagine the same would be true of many Indies. He will have lied directly to the very people who voted for him. And if the stats I see for CT are true (more D’s then R’s) he would effectively ensure never being reelected again.
Same would go for leaving the Senate for say, Sec. of Defense. What’s he going to do in 2 years? No Dem administration is going to hire him.
He may think he is sitting in the driver’s seat, but I think he’s wrong. Now whether the D’s will have the nads to say “go to the end of the line” Mr. Sellout (wrt seniority) is a whole ‘nother question.
Rat–I don’t think he’d do it either- but who the hell knows.
rat bastahd @ 67
He’s arrogant and foolish enough to think that even if he doesn’t switch parties, he can vote along Republican party lines and that no one will remember, six years from now.
For what it’s worth- I think that Ol Joe got the presidential bug a few years ago- and decided to stake out some centerist territory that was being ignored- he sees himself as Scoop Jackson reincarnated. He figured he’d match the goopers on national defense and some of the “culture” issues- and that he’d be in a position to win votes even in red states.
It didn’t work.
You are probably correct watertiger. Btw, great snarky post!
Unfortunately, I see the D’s caving and giving him his seniority…if he wins. I think he’s like a lot of fickle Americans in general, he’ll vote with the “winning side” until it’s something of supreme importance like a SCOTUS vacancy and then his self-importance/arrogance will lead him to “stand apart from his colleagues on principle” or some such bullshit.
Go Ned!
Kathryn in MA @ 62
Yeah!
Joe is bad for the entire planet.
in case anybody has money left to donate to candidates i have been thinking about how to decide where to put it. there are a lot of good candidates that deserve our support and i can’t give to all of them, so:
1. where are the toss ups? i’m putting some on harold ford. that really disgusting RNC commercial (see comment #61 on the morning talking head thread) majorly pissed me off. any more of that kind of crap deserves all the punishment we can muster. plus i’m an ol’ southern boy when i take time to remember.
2. who are the most despicable republicans? well, of the ones who haven’t resigned or aren’t probably going to get trounced i’m thinking jean schmidt and george allen, so i’m putting some on Victoria Wulsin and Jim Webb. a little extra for Webb since inroads into the south really would hurt the Rove plan. a few extra bonus points for that.
3. my first donation went to Lamont because he’s our lynchpin, so to speak and Lieberwurst is the poster crybaby for what’s wrong with the Democratic party. i want to help Colleen Rowley up in Minnesota because she’s such a strong woman and finally i’m going to find out who’s running against Jerry Lewis out in California. That twit has to go.
The next two weeks are going to be Sh*t storm. Get ready. Take no prisoners ……

Right & right. Priorities are really important.
First we take Manhatthan,
Then We Take Ber-lin.
Clearly, we have fishunderestimated him.
As for the impeachment topic from the last thread - I’m for transparent investigations to out the ReThug corruption, lies, coverups, and Constitution destruction - and if that leads down an impeachment avenue, great.
However, as much as I believe he (and DeadEye) deserve impeachment I think it’s too divisive for 08. Assuming at least a House takeover, Bush is immediately a lame duck - only the kool-aid drinkers are listening to his nonsense anymore anyways. He willb e cast out by many as a LOSER.
Thus my agenda: First, focus on the 100 Hours, get progressive fair legislation enacted that helps the middle class. Then, let Waxman, Conyers, et al conduct their investigations for all the world to see. Finally, bring indictments or whatever else is necessary to clean up the swamp, and if necessary head down the impeachment road.

If Iraq’s Shiites can form their own entity, why not those of northeastern Saudi Arabia, who chafe under Sunni rule? Or the Shiites of southern Lebanon? What about other minorities, such as the Alawis of Syria, the Druze and Christians of Lebanon, the Kurds of Turkey, Syria and Iran? Will they, too, demand the right to rule themselves?

Bay State Lib: It’s too late for much of an Oct. surprise. Lots of absentees have already voted. Lots of Oregonians will be voting this week.
AP - The White House is bracing for guerrilla warfare on the homefront politically if Republicans lose control of the House, the Senate or both — and with it, the president’s ability to shape and dominate the national agenda.
“There’s no question that the Republican coalition is stressed over the way Washington has been handling fiscal matters, the Foley affair, the Iraq war,” said GOP consultant Scott Reed. “All of these are coming together at the same time.”

My eastern band ancestor was named Anna, at least after she married a white man named Elisha Wright. This was probably not her original Cherokee name but who knows? She was born in NC but I know very little else about her life.
