I just tuned in to FDL and see that I missed Kirsten’s live blog. I suggested to one of her operatives over at dKos that he contact Howie about featuring Kirsten in a Blue America interview here at FDL, so I’m thrilled that it came to pass. Howie seems to have have underestimated the vitriol of the right wingers in parts of NY-20, including southern Saratoga county. Sweeney’s predecessor Gerald Solomon was a reactionary nutcase, not a mainstream Republican. He had the distinction of proposing more draconian drug war legislation than any other congressperson.</p> <p>There was an article in the Daily Gazette a couple days ago about Sweeney and his pal Tony Rudy. It told how Sweeney went on a junket to the Northern Marianas to check on the labor situation and said that everything he saw was totally above board. I haven’t heard Kirsten raise this issue in any of her ads yet, which surprises me. </p> <p>The latest Sweeney ad has him sitting on a couch with his wife, acting like a big crybaby and saying how Kirsten said mean things about his family … I don’t know what that’s about. </p> <p>I haven’t seen many Gillibrand campaign signs in these parts, but maybe that’s because they’re being stolen like the Hillary signs were a few years ago. </p> <p>I wish Kirsten the best of luck, but like I say there are some pretty rabid Republicans in this neck of the woods so I’m keeping my fingers crossed. Sorry I missed the liveblogging, but I was one of the folks out canvassing in Clifton Park. We knocked on about 600 doors today, and the lit drop should have hit about 25,000. I’ve been canvassing or phone banking almost every night for the past month, and have already arranged for the day before election day as a vacation day to work on GOTV.</p> <p>There were (my guess) about 120 people gathered today to hear Kirsten, most of them union members gathered for the lit drop for Kirsten and NY Assembly candidate Bob Reilly (also a very good guy), plus a few of us there to do canvassing. Albany was one of three cities to hold the first Dean meetups (I’m proud to say I was there), and the Gillibrand campaign has the same “people-powered” feel. I realize Alaska is a different political environment compared to the lower 48, but even so I think that being tied so closely to forced abortions would be the kiss of death for a Republican politician. Heck, I’m offended, and if I ever ran for office one of the planks would be “Free Birth Control for Everybody”.
