[Kirsten Gillibrand joins us in the comments today. Please give her a big FDL welcome -- and, as always, please stay on topic in Blue America threads, and please be polite. -- CHS]
Growing up in Brooklyn, I never could understand how a Jewish person, in this case, New York's senior Senator, Jacob Javits, could be a Republican (who, I was already convinced at a young age, were nothing but a bunch of authoritarian right wingers like Barry Goldwater and Strom Thurmond). But Javits was a different kind of Republican — a liberal (they don't have them anymore) — and so was my college housemate's uncle, Gerald Solomon.
I was a political science major and I was excited that my housemate had a congressman, albeit a Republican one, for an uncle. He represented a gigantically sprawling upstate district, so long that people in the southern part, Dutchess County, commute to New York City while people in the middle, say Rensselaer County, work in Albany, and people way up in Essex County…well, they could work in Montreal if they wanted to.
When Gerald Solomon retired in 1998 after being a congressman basically forever, a whole slew of mainstream Republicans like himself lined up to take his place. In fact there were nine. Solomon said 8 of the 9 were well-qualified to represent the area and only one was unqualified: John Sweeney, a right wing imbecile and slavish hack to New York Governor George Pataki.
Sweeney refused to join the debates and the other candidates split the mainstream vote, allowing Pataki's clone to waltz in to Congress in a heavily Republican district.
About 55% rural and only 2% African-American, Bush beat Kerry with 54% of the vote (and Sweeney took 66%, against Doris Kelly, a Democrat who spent just over $20,000 on the race, against Sweeney's $1.4 million). Well, in 2006 Sweeney may be tap-dancing but he sure isn't waltzing, and his current opponent, Kirsten Gillibrand, our special guest today at Firedoglake, has the resources to match Sweeney's corporate bribes.
Anyone interested in the nonstop foibles of one of the least competent members of Congress, can spend hour and hours reading the fascinating stories about Sweeney at 20TrueBlue, a blog dedicated to shining a bright light on Sweeney's ineptitude, buffoonery and faithlessness. And if you still want more, there's always the wonderfully-written Democracy In Albany blog.
Or you could go out on the stump with Kirsten, a brilliant and charismatic attorney (and mom) who doesn't hesitate to tell it exactly like it is when it comes to the hapless, in-way-over-his-head Sweeney.
"John Sweeney," she told me a few weeks ago, "hasn't been a strong advocate for the needs of this district or for the needs of middle class families… He has been a supporter of Medicare Part D– keeping people here from buying affordable drugs across the border and keeping the U.S. government from negotiating bulk rates for drugs…"
And that isn't the only beef Kirsten has had with Sweeney.
"He's voted against almost every kind of veterans benefit you could vote against– from health care, job training, and education to housing opportunities. He's voted 100% with George Bush on the Iraq war and has never once asked the tough questions it would take to start to hold the president accountable for his decisions… When Mr. Sweeney ran for office, he told voters he firmly opposed NAFTA– and then immediately supported CAFTA, took a trip to the Dominican republic and watched 100,000 manufacturing jobs in New York State get shipped overseas."
Kirsten is ready for real leadership and will be on the team that is tasked with cleaning up the horrendous mess made by Bush and rubber stamp nitwits like Sweeney. She's running on middle-class taxcuts, like making college tuition tax deductible, rather than on the kinds of tax cuts for millionaires Sweeney has supported– while he has consistently voted against raising the minimum wage (while voting to give himself 8 pay raises).
Kirsten sees the problem of energy independence as both a matter of national security and as a way to spur economic development and environmentalism.
"Folks in our district are very concerned with the price of gas. They are also concerned that this Administration and Congressman Sweeney have refused to stand up to Big Oil. As a consequence people believe that the oil companies have been manipulating the market. No one will be surprised to see has below $2.50/gallon by election day and over $3/gallon a few days after. One of the first things I want to do when I'm elected to Congress is to investigate the oil industry for market manipulation."
Kirsten is also a self-described "hawk" when it comes to finance reform in politics. She's made a pledge to the voters– a kind of IOU– that outlines what her constituents can expect of her in terms of ethics.
Kirsten came to politics younger than most people, mostly because her grandmother had been a secretary in the New York legislature.
"All the legislators were men and all the secretaries were women. My grandmother organized the Women's Democratic Club of Albany. She was a pioneer for women's rights in this area… When you care about something deeply, you have to stand up for it and you have to fight for it. And you have to put your whole heart and soul into it. I'm running because we need a new direction in this country and we need leaders who are willing to fight for our values and putting our families and our priorities first."
Can she win? Most polls show an even split.
The last Democrat who went up against Sweeney spent, as I mentioned earlier, less than $24,000, while Sweeney spent $1.4 million. Kirsten has already raised well over that. I also mentioned it's a very Republican district. It is, but polls show that less than a third of the residents approve of the job Bush has been doing as president.
Voter registration in NY-20 is not an insurmountable problem. The Republicans there are fiscally conservative, socially progressive and pro-environmental. Like Bush, Sweeney doesn't fit in with any of those precepts. They spend money like drunken sailors, allow Big Business despoil the environment for their bottom line and, of course, are completely reactionary and intolerant when it comes to social issues.
In the recent past, Democrats have won in NY-20. Schumer took a whopping 57% of the vote, nearly as many Republicans as the Republican candidate! When Spitzer ran for Attorney General he won with 59% in NY-20. He's on the ballot and campaigning for Kirsten, as is Hillary Clinton who is also expected to win big in the district.
Like everywhere, people are fed up with the Bush Regime and its disastrous policies and fed up with the rubber stamp enablers like John Sweeney. Some say it looks like a perfect storm scenario and I'm buying in to that, especially for a candidate as strong as Kirsten.
Please join me at the Blue America ActBlue page to let Kirsten know we appreciate her taking the stands she's taking and fighting an arrogant bully and Know-Nothing like Sweeney. The first 25 donors who add .05 to their contribution will get a copy of a great new CD, The Essential Donovan, his 14 greatest hits. And quite a few people have asked about the "Had Enough" Firedoglake clock that Ann made. Today we can give away a dozen to the first 12 people who donate at least $50 to Kirsten's campaign. Let's make sure Kirsten is with us in DC at the Blue America swearing in day party the first week in January.

About Firedoglake

Hey, Howie, I got my countdown clock this week…
MayDaze @ 1
We’re giving away 12 more Countdown clocks today. The details are at the end of the piece above.
Howie,
Jay Fawcett here. I hope I’m in the right place.
Hey Jay, great to see you. Today is Kirsten Gillibrand’s blog session though. Happy to have you here too, of course
Jay, I e-mailed you my phone #. Give me a call
I live in the 20th district and am working as hard as I can for Kirsten. I met Kirsten and her husband Jonathan back in 2004 and have been waiting impatiently ever since to have the chance to elect someone that will actually represent me in Congress. Kirsten and Jonathan are simply good, decent people with good hearts and the right ideas about what public service is all about… unlike the incumbent whose entire career has been all about ladder climbing and ingratiating himself to whoever has the most power and money.
Kirsten is coming to us from the largest lit drop in the history of Saratoga County, right in John Sweeney’s home town of Clifton Park.
Go Dems!
Kirsten
Although Sue Kelly has ducked John Hall and won’t debate him, most of the other NY Republicans have debated their Dem challengers. Is it likely you are going to get a debate with Sweeney? And if not, can you swing an appearance on the Colbert Report as Hall was able to?
Welcome to FDL, Andrew– and thanks for introducing me to Kirsten
Just saw Kirsten’s ad on her site called “No Decency”, THAT is GREAT…. looking at the rest!
BTW…. Howie, I recieved my “Wait, don’t move to Canada” and used it at my last DFA meeting. Thanks!
Hi Kirsten:
I live near, not in, your zig-zaggy district but I do know a lot of your constituents who can’t wait to vote for you.
How’s your internal polling looking and what’s your plan for the homestretch of this race?
Hi everyone. Thank you all for joining me online today! As you know, I am running for Congress because this country is in desperate need of leaders who will offer new ideas and real change. I look forward to answering your questions about the campaign and my ideas.
Welcome Kirsten, Jay and Howie, and Go Blue America!
Welcome Kirsten!
Welcome to Firedoglake, Kirsten. We’re glad you could join us today. Andrew says you’ve been out giving away literature all day. Did your son hand out fliers today?
Hey Kirsten,
What are some of the best things we can all do to help you win in November?
Doni
GO KG!!
Welcome, Kirsten! So great to have you here at FDL — and we cannot wait for you to kick some Sweeney butt in November. :)
Kirsten… I was reading in the paper that Glens Falls Hospital has asked the Sweeney campaign to withdraw and ad he filmed at the hospital because it might violate IRS regulations for the hospital. Is this the third or fourth time he has… um… circumvented… the rules about where and what is legal for campaigning?
Kristen:
Best of luck.
I’m in GA where several months ago the head of the state Democratic party told me they didn’t anticipate picking up any seats and were worried about holding on to 2, due to Republican redistricting.
I’m glad to hear that NY state is giving them a real run for it.
Thanks everyone for your questions. I just came back from going door to door in Clifton Park — one of our beautiful family communities. We had over 120 people going door to door today in that community alone! I really enjoyed talking to the voters about what matters most to them – high on the list were middle class tax cuts, taking on Big Oil to lower gas prices (no wonder they are at 2.39 a gallon right before Election Day!- let’s see where they are in a month or two), and getting healthcare costs down. One voter was concerned about education and the fact that NCLB is not funded, resulting in unfairness to our children and our property taxes going up and up. We certainly need a change in direction in Congress.
120 volunteers in Clifton Park is great! That’s where Sweeney lives. Did he have any of his usual hecklers there to give people a hard time?
I’ve been so pleased that you and the rest of the campaign have been unafraid to take it right to the heart of Republican country here.
Welcome Kirsten – it’s great to have you join us here at FDL!
It’s exciting to meet another great candidate who will bring decency and real values to Congress.
For suggestions on how to help: if you are here in the district, please help me go door to door. Also, we have phone banks every night. If you don’t live here but want to help, we have remote phonebanking every night as well. You can help by talking about the issues that you care most about and writing letters to our editors in our several local papers — your opinions matter! If you can work Election Day, we need poll watchers and help with get out the vote. If you want to do ANYTHING, just email me at campaign@gillibrand2006.com. Thanks for asking — together we will take back our Country and put this great Nation on the right track.
Kirsten, what are you hearing from the voters in your district?
What are their top three concerns and what will be your priorities after you are sworn into the 110 Congress?
So what did you tell them about NCLB and taxs?
Last year they were about to close an elementary school in another town in my district but the state came up with a one time bandaid payment.
This year they are talking about closing the elementary school in my town and busing the kids to the next town north.
And the County Executive just came out with a budget that includes at 25% property tax hike! On top of the school district tax hike already approved.
How do we get this under control and improve our kids educations while we are at it? I know these are common questions I get when I’m out knocking on doors.
Kirsten – I imagine that the moderate republicans who used to play such a role in NY politics feel pretty left out of the current process. Are they open to voting D in response?
Thanks Andrew. We plan to do a lot more work in Clifton Park and each of the 10 counties. Campaigns like this are won on the ground, and we have such an amazing amout of volunteers and grassroots supporters (as you well know!) that we will bring a victory to NY20 by bringing out the vote in record numbers. I didn’t see hecklers today — maybe we have won them over as well!
Andrew C. White @ 22
(and Kristen – we ask a *lot* of questions but we’re patient so please don’t feel overwhelmed – it’s a sign of our excitement over your race!)
Hey, Kirsten!
Welcome to Firedoglake’s Blue America! We are darn pleased to have someone with your credentials on our side.
Would you care to comment on the idea that the Bush tax cuts should be rolled back and transferred from the wealthy to the middle class and working poor? Some say that this sort of tax cut would be put back into the economy, as is NOT the case with the Republican tax cuts.
Top 3 Priorities:
1. Make sure tax cuts come to the Middle Class – the Middle Class are feeling squeezed because of high property taxes, high fuel costs and high healthcare costs. We need Middle Class tax cuts like making college tuition tax deductible. We need fiscal discipline in Washington. Our property taxes are so high because the Federal Government keeps sending down unfunded mandates — that has to stop. We should have pay as you go spending, stop subsidies to big oil and big pharma and rein in spending on non-priority projects like the bridge to no where in Alaska.
2. Energy Independence in 10 years as both a National Security Priority and an Economic Security Priority. By providing federal leadership, we can bring in private investment into alternative energies and conservation technologies. We can ask Detroit to raise mpg standards by 5% every year, and reach 60 mpg within 10 years. Otherwise, our troops will be forced to guard every oil pipline around the world for the next 2 decades. I would rather invest our money in home grown businesses that use renewable energies that are good for our environment and builds our industrial and agricultural base. This is how we keep our middle class strong, and as the market leader of the next big thing, we can say that outsourcing is not inevitable.
3. Lower healthcare costs for America. By focusing on preventive care as opposed to emergency care, we can lower costs for everyone. Right now we pay 37 Billion a year for emergency room care for those who have no access to care otherwise — with 47 Million Americans with no insurance we need a low cost provider to get them into a preventive care system. To lower costs, we should open Medicare to any person that wants to buy in at a rate they can afford, based on income. This would lower costs overall and build our economy because America will be healthier and more productive.
katymine @ 25
Just popped over the the Blue America page to send a little help to Kirsten’s campaign – gotta pay for all that printing for the lit drops!
http://www.actblue.com/page/blueamerica
This election is not about Democrats, Republicans or Independents, it is about leadership and the direction this country is going in. In our district we have many Republicans who also want to see a change in direction. There are many “Rockefeller Republicans” in our district, who are fiscal conservatives, social progressives and environmentalists, and who do not agree with the Bust agenda (because this Administration is none of those three things) — many of these Republicans are voting with me this election. Many have voted with Democrats in the past — in the last 2 elections, Schumer won the district by 57% and Spitzer by 59% — meaning that more than half of the Republicans that voted, voted for a Dem. This district is not happy with their current Congressman and will vote for change on November 7.
Top 3 Priorities:
Kirsten….. these are the issues that I am hearing over and over again all across America. They are mainstream core of what every voter I have talked to are hungry to hear from their candidates.
Just like NY, AZ now has three CD districts that are in play. It may be slow here today, hopefully everyone is out hitting the streets or phones for their favorite candidate.
Go get’em Kirsten….. off to hit the streets for my candidates!
btw…. thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule.
“the Bust agenda”
I love typo’s! They often tell the real story without being intentional!
The Bush agenda is a Bust!
Maybe Kristen will be relieved that I don’t have any questions for her. It’s hard enough to keep track of all that’s going on in Ohio as well as national disasters like the death of Habeas Corpus, so I really haven’t been able to tune in too much to races in other states. But I know that Andrew always speaks highly of Kristen, so that’s a good recommendation.
I came home this afternoon to see Andrew’s post at Howard-Empowered People about Kristen Gillibrand’s live blog, so I popped over here to check it out. I then checked out our Act Blue page and discovered that I hadn’t added Krisen to our list of candidates.
I have rectified that matter. Good luck with the rest of the campaign!
One Republican household I spoke with the other day was concerned about NCLB. They run a timber mill here in town and their concerns were about the raise in taxes but also about the dwindling of variety of trade school opportunities for the kids in town. People really see the connection between NCLB forcing a focus on teaching testing as opposed to teaching kids to find out what they are good at and giving them opportunities to explore it and find their niche in life.
All spending is about priorities. I disagree with this Administration’s focus on the wealthiest Americans in the nation. I think we need tax cuts for the Middle Class. Tax cuts for the Middle Class actually make a difference to the majority of Americans, who benefit so they have the funds they need to educate their childen, pay for healthcare and invest in our small businesses and communities. In the last tax cut, the average tax cut our community received $20; the average cut for those earning more than 1 Million was $40,000 and for those earning more than 5 Million, they received $500,000. We need better priorities, and ones that help our Middle Class families.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 31
Kirsten – thanks for the answer and for the leadership. It’s so important for us to understand that most voters are not dogmatic partisans but are people looking for better solutions to the problems we face – and looking to vote for candidates who understand their real concerns.
Folks – don’t forget to hit the Blue America page and help Kirsten get her message out!
http://www.actblue.com/page/blueamerica
Thanks a lot for doing your best to rid us of this terrible congressperson. Being from Florida, I take his leading the Brooks Brothers Riot very personally. I do not understand how they were allowed to get away with that. I will be so happy to see you win.
Siun @

Siun—just matched your donation. That literature ain’t cheap. OK folks, who’s next?
Kirsten—I really appreciate your chatting with us. November 8th can’t come fast enough.
I have not talked to a parent, teacher or administrator who is not concerned about No Child Left Behind. While the bill had some good intentions of bringing accountablity and goals to our education system, it has not been effective. First, the best ideas in it of smaller class size, teacher training, administrator training and principal training, have not been funded. Also, some of the testing requirments have not only resulted in “teaching to the test” at the expense of other learning, but also extreme pressure on our special education programs to meet standards without the funding to make it possible. What needs to happen in my view is a rewriting of the law based on the feedback from the parents, teachers and administrators, and then fully funding what is left. If not, we the taxpayers will continue to see our property taxes go up and up because the Federal Government does not have the fiscal discipline to fund its mandates.
Andrew C. White @ 38
Sweeney started with just about $750,000 advantage. Kirsten has done a fantastic job of closing that gap but he still has a lead in campaign money.
Also, the NRCC has started coming into the district in a big way with media buys attacking Kirsten. The Republicans have been nasty and negative from the start and I’ve no doubt that they will continue to the bitter end.
Kirsten… is there any chance Sweeney will stopping running from you and actually sit down to a debate between now and election day?
The ways that the so-called tax cuts of Bush simply offloaded expenses to local districts and property taxes is an important point.
RGB – thanks for the match … let’s see who steps up next!
Kirsten at 42 — my mother taught in the public schools as an elementary school teacher for more than 30 years. She’s retired now, but NCLB began before she retired and she hated how it changed everything from a focus on education to a focus on how to take tests. Understanding and comprehension went out the window — and the funding was never fully there for her district. She stays in touch with teachers who are still working at her former school — which is an exceptional one in our state of WV — and none of them are pleased at the change in emphasis and what it has done to their ability to help children think and grow. Especiall since ti cuts back on arts education and physical education programs, because everything is sacrificed to test taking preparation.
Kirsten – do folks talk much about Iraq when you speak with them? and if so, what’s the feeling in your district?
Polling: We are doing GREAT! Our last poll showed that we are at 44% to Sweeney at 42%. My name recognition is at 70%, which shows that our work over the past year of going door to door and meeting people in their homes has really made a difference. People are excited about my vision for change and for new ideas in Washington. Thanks for all your support. I need to sign off now because I am going to door to door on the main street in Saratoga. I am grateful for all of your time and all of your support. Please spread the word of our campaign and please contribute whatever you can. Even $20 makes a big difference – that buys 20 bumper stickers or 7 lawn signs – thanks so much!!!
Kirsten
Cookie Guggleman @ 11
Kirsten — thanks so much for stopping by today — we really appreciate it. Hope things go well for you in Saratoga. We’re all pulling for you!
Hi Kirsten,
I just finished canvassing for you in E.D 28. Great response from folks.
I have quite a story to tell you on John Sweeney dodging the issue of Social Security.
In response to a challenge from Josh Marshall of TPM, I started calling Congressman Sweeney’s office to find out his position on Social Security. I continued to call his office for the next year and a half. He has yet to articulate his position beyond, we need to save social security.
Now, my husband collects social security, I collect social security and so does our son. It’s hard to imagine a family of voters with a more direct stake in this issue. His office knows this well, as I have often conversed with members of his staff.
And yet, nothing. Nada. john Sweeney doesn’ think he owes voters in his district any answer on this issue.
I will be thrilled next week to start phone banking with Alex and targetting seniors and telling them my story, which is, BTW, documented with contemporaneous blog entries, detailing my phone calls to his office, as well as on Josh’s blog.
And speaking of blogs…why no blog? (and I apologize if this has already been answered upthread. I just got on).
And, I am critical of the fact that your site does not have a calendar of events on it. I know why that is. I just disagree with it. You still have something of a name recognition problem and that doesn’t help. At all.
Thanks for stopping by Kirsten– and best of luck between now and November 7. We’ll see you at the FDL swearing-in party in January.
Last one and then I have to go — but Iraq is a huge issue. People want to have leaders that will protect our troops with the armor and training they need and then receive the benefits they earned when they come home. They want leaders who will stand up to the President when he’s wrong and demand accountability for abuses and bad policy. I have a very detailed plan for Iraq that is on my website at http://www.gillibrand2006.com, but in summary, we need a Congressional resolution stating that we will not have permanent bases and no claim on the oil. We need to use our power and leverage there to bring the parties together to choose peace over civil war. To do this, we should have a notice period of less than a year that our military leaders should set to create a sense of urgency for compromise. We can bring each group to the table by making sure each is provided a stake in reconstruction contracts and oil revenues, and have real veto and minority rights. When the IRaqis choose peace over civil war, they will reject the foreign terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda from within. That is how we undermine terrorism in the long term and encourage self determination by the Iraqi people.
a href=”#comment-344143″>Siun @ 47
Hey gang, next Saturday we don’t have a congressional race to look at. I asked Mark Dann, the state senator from Ohio who helped expose all the Republican corruption there– and who is now running for Attorney General– to join us. I hope we’re going to learn all about Ohio and how Republicans try to steal elections and what we can do to prevent that.
Here is the latest on the poll Kirsten mentioned…
http://www.gillibrand2006.com/node/405
Iraq is of course a huge issue around here. Republicans, Democrats, and independents alike are unhappy with the Bush administration and Sweeney flip-flopped just the other day to saying “stay the course” isn’t working after voting for Bush and parroting his line 100% of the time before that.
For more Kirsten’s position on the Iraq War please see this:
http://www.gillibrand2006.com/Iraq
Similarly, Sweeney talks the usual “support the troops” line but then votes against our military and their families every step of the way. Kirsten has come out with her own GI Bill plan. She believes in real support for our military.
http://www.gillibrand2006.com/veterans
Sweeney has named one of the 20 most corrupt members of Congress BY CREW. Kirsten opened the campaign by going after him on his unethical behavior. Here is her ETHICS IOU:
http://www.gillibrand2006.com/ethics

Please contribute if you can. With the wonderful gerrymandering of this district we have all or parts of 10 different counties and several different media markets to contend in… including the NYC market for the southern end of the district.
Every little bit helps to get rid of the Miami Mob Boss John Sweeney.
Thanks!
Oh, and Kirten, this is hilarious.
I was out canvassing and I got home and my youngs son said, “Mom, Kirsten Gilllibrand was just here”.
And I said, ” No honey, Mommy was just out canvassing for Kirsten Gillibrand.”
He insisted, “No, Mom, I’m telling you. Kirsten Gillibrand was here.” “Okay, honey, ” I said, “Kirsten Gillibrand was here”.
I went over to my husband, who was parenting while I canvassed, and told him our son was confused by politics and thought that Kirsten Gillibrand was here.
Apparently, Mommy is confused. As my husband informed me, Kirsten Gillibrand WAS at our house. I missed you at my house by about ten minutes! Come back and visit anytime!
And I will think twice next time about naysaying a five year old!
Oooh, Howie — that sounds like a fantastic topic. Thanks much!
I should be getting used to it by now, but it always amazes me how articulate, positive and “with it” our Blue America candidates are. (Perhaps it is from watching W on tee vee, my expectations have become artificially lowered…)
If you are as impressed as I am with Kirsten, please consider contributing to her Blue America page.
Don’t forget! If you can swing a fifty – there’s a chance you can get a nifty “Had Enough Clock” for your donation for change.
A nice side by side comparison of where Kirsten Gillibrand and John Sweeney stand on the issues can be found here (PDF file)
http://www.gillibrand2006.com/…..weeney.pdf
Kirsten, what is your idea when it comes to Iraq? Are you in favor of a gradual pullout or an immediate and total re-deployment?
Jacquie, how are the radio campaigns going? Are any of our “Had Enough” ads on the radio yet?
And be sure to watch 2 truly innovative and enjoyable web ads the campaign came up with here:

and here:

For more information on where Kirsten stands on the Iraq War please see here:
http://www.gillibrand2006.com/Iraq
The Decency ad rocks. I e-mailed that to my list and they loved it.
John Sweeney has been a 100% Bush supporter and “stay the course” kinda guy until just the other day when he finally decided the people of this district aren’t buying what he is selling.
A few choice quotes:
Wow – another great Blue America candidate. You know, I talk to a lot of folks who say “they’re all alike” or “what does it matter?” and my response is always to send them to the Blue America page – these are inspiring candidates who show what strong voices and clear thinking can bring to the issues – and the folks I send, end up excited about the possibility of these great folks winning. Thank you Howie!
and everyone – don’t forget:
http://www.actblue.com/page/blueamerica
Similarly, Sweeney parrots the republican “support the troops” line every step of the way but then votes against our military men and women when it really counts.
Kirsten Gillibrand has come up with her own ideas about real support for our military, veterans, and their families in a revamped GI Bill:
http://www.gillibrand2006.com/veterans
And of course, Sweeney was named as one of the 20 most corrupt Congressmen by CREW recently.
Kirsten Gillibrand opened the campaign with the Skiing with Sweeney video and going after him for his corrupt practices. While he says Kirsten raises all her money in NYC the truth is that she raises more in the district then he does (it is not a wealthy district), more in the state then he does by far, and most of his money comes from PAC’s and lobbyists (by far) while most of hers comes from individuals.
Kirsten opened the campaign with her ETHICS IOU:
http://www.gillibrand2006.com/ethics
I had the great pleasure of participating in an event in New York with Kirsten several months ago in NYC and came away very impressed with her as a candidate and as a person. I can’t wait to have her down here in Congress.
Speaking of great Blue America candidates, I hope everyone has already seen the smack-back that Joe Sestak administered to Republicrook Curt Weldon. This has got to be one of the best responses to an attempted swiftboat attack I’ve ever seen. POWERFUL video.
If you have questions about where she stands on other issues please see the Issues page at her website:
http://www.gillibrand2006.com/taxonomy/term/8
Hey Joe!! How did your son like the pictures of you with Green Day?
Ambassador Wilson – thank you for dropping by!
It’s going to be wonderful when all these great candidates are in DC – what a party we are going to have!
And for the latest poll results that she spoke of please here:
http://www.gillibrand2006.com/node/405
Gillibrand 41 Sweeney 42
There has actually been one since then showing Kirsten up by 2, 44-42.
Howie Klein @ 58
(squinching up forehead, trying to think) Man, I am so flat this morning. I think I am going through “post-partem” letdown because all the radio buys were put to bed yesterday.
I know we have some on right now in CT-05, CA-04 and OH-02, but Monday is the big day – most flights start Monday 10/23 and run right up and on November 7.
Blue America PAC is very proud to be able to run radio advertising in support of candidates in IL-14 (go Laesch!), OH-02 (Mean Jean has got to go!), CA-25 (Robert!), CA-04 (Charlie Brown), CO-04 (Go, Angie!) AND to place ads in CT-05 because their local peeps raised the dough.
Phew. I’m tired. But really happy we have such a fabulous team of patriots that have come together to fight for our country.
Did I miss any, Howie?
Howie,
I thought Green Day looked a lot younger than me, and even with eye makeup less tired! My son loved it however and that is what counts. Gave mee great street cred. I have got to get some of their music to listen to.
I especially liked the pic with you, John, Rob, and of course Jane and Valerie. We were truly two thorns between the roses.
Sorry I missed Kirsten, but I’ve read some of her thoughtful answers here and at her website, and I think she’d make a good Congresswoman. Despite my vow to kick the Blue America habit, I dropped some in the kitty for her.
I suppose in a couple of weeks I’ll be over it anyway.
And please do consider contributing to the campaign. The district is a wonderful example of gerrymandering covering all or parts (parts mostly) of 10 counties and multiple media markets including the ultra-expensive NYC market for the southern portion of the district.
We’re buying airtime in the Albany and northern markets but having to do door to door and mailings in the southern portion because we simply can’t afford the NYC market rates.
If you can spare a few bucks then please click the Blue America link:
http://www.actblue.com/page/blueamerica#9140
And send a few Kirsten’s way. All of us in NY-20 will be very greatful for the help.
Peace,
Andrew
Joe at 73 — Great to see you — am so jealous that I didn’t get to come out and hang with you and Valerie and Howie and Jane and all the great folks at the PFAW event. Perhaps next year…
Thanks again for all your help Andrew
Cujo – I know what you mean – every week I think this will be the week I keep to my budget and then Howie brings us these great candidates and I just can’t help myself! But what a great investment in our future!
Jacqrat!!!!
What a great job – all those districts and all those buys! Bravo to our media maven!
Christy Hardin Smith @ 77
Christie, We missed you too. Fortunately, I feel like a get to see every morning when I go to the website to see what trouble you are brewing for our own national evildoers. Lots of material to work with.
Siun @ 78
Ha, I have the ultimate in budget-watch working for me! Having to survive on my disability benefits! But, I do get to do SOMETHING to help, and that gives me a really warm, squishy feeling.
Just wanted to let all of you who can donate know how much it is appreciated by those who cannot.

It’s a good commercial.
I have to run but thanks to all of you for what you are doing for Blue America. I looked at some of the figures yesterday en route to CN to do a Lamont fundraiser (republicans for Lamont). Very impressive effort.
If you don’t have a reason to loathe and distrust Sweeney, here’s one: He’s the scum that organized and was behind the infamous “Brooks brothers Riot”, that deliberately orchestrated a riot to intimidate the West Palm Beach, Florida election officials into stopping the recount.
That’s right, John Sweeney had a personal hand in putting Bush into office.
Haven’t had enough? How about this–it could be well and convincingly argued that John Sweeney was also responsible for the passage of Medicate Part D (as in Disaster), as he was the swing vote. The vote was an hour from taking place, and as of that time, he hadn’t made up his mind whether or not to vote for the bill. Well, he voted yes, and the rest is donut-hole, screw the old and poor people history.
You know, all we want is insurance like John Sweeney has. When John Sweeney had vasculitis, he had excellent medical care. The best neurologist at Johns Hopkins. Wow, out of state medical experts on his case. Frankly, it seems fairly obvious that if he were anything but a member of Congress, with the Congressional insurance perks, he would be dead long before anyone could diagnose vasculitis. Left untreated, or incorrectly diagnosed, vasculitis has around a 90% mortality rate. Time is essential to survival. Luckily, John had the insurance his constituents can only dream about. The kind members of Congress get.
All I want is what the criminals like Duke Cunningham, Bob Ney and thugs like John Sweeney have. Decent healthcare.
Is it really too much to ask of our Congress that all children in America be able to see a doctor? Under John Sweeney’s watch, thie infant mortality rate has risen for the first time in history. It’s not just his trashing of the Constitution that threatens to make us a bannana republic. It’s the decline of the availability of national healthcare that makes the US destined for third world status.
But John Sweeney doesn’t think he has to answer the voters questions.
October surprise? Sweeney is destined for a November surprise called “unemployment”.
Regarding blogs… a lot of the people in the district got together and formed a group called 20TrueBlue dedicated to getting rid of John Sweeney. We started a blog.
http://20trueblue.blogspot.com/
It is not an official campaign blog but we do try to keep it up to date with all things NY-20.
Feel free to stop on by!
As someone who lives about five minutes away from Sweeney, I just want to say thanks to everyone here and especially the FDL ladies for hosting this blog with Kirsten.
Andrew, I’ll be reading you on the CapCon blog, which has among the lamest wingnut bloggers I have ever seen. How you continue to have the patience to engage the residents of Looneyville is beyond me. Bless you.
Peace,
Gsail
Please consider asking them to adopt NY-20!
genoasail @ 86
ROTFLMAO
They keep me amused! (mostly)
Andrew C. White @ 88
Not a bad idea– and I have to admit, we are preparing the materials now… just in case. But they’ll pick who they want of course. I think tey’re from the South (judging by the accent on the phone just now)
Howie Klein @ 78
Thank you Howie for having Kirsten! She is just the sort of woman we want to send to Congress.
… now… time to go knock on some more doors.
Peace,
Andrew
Ok I’m in. With a little for BlueAmerica PAC too. Gettin’ close to $30,000 folks, who will get the next Had Enough campaign?
egregious @ 91
Egy!!!
Mighty exciting, eh? Egregious!
Jacqrat’s been buying spots and the campaign looks so great … what a neat way to help such good progressives!
Siun @ 93
Siun, may I just say you are like a nice hot cup of tea and warm comforter to snuggle with? I wanna hug you.
Cujo359 @

Cujo—I’m justifying it as pay now or pay later. So far, my wife just rolls her eyes and smiles. When we all wake up on Nov. 8th, I’m pretty confident she’ll still be smiling.
Sending a hug your way Jacquie! You are doing such an awesome job … and I know that setting up all those media plans is *hard* work!
Wait til MrEgregious gets the bills for THIS month :)
gotta run out and do some errands – and get in a good walk … too much computer time and not enough stretch muscles time and I’m feeling it!
See you all a bit later … but don’t forget to send a little something to help Kirsten and Blue America!
Consider the contributions as an 80th birthday present to my parents! Mom turns 80 today and Dad turns 80 on the 25th.
I want us all to give them a Democratic House and Senate for their Octogenarian celebration!
RBG @ 1:00 pm (#96)
That’s how I justify it. Thankfully, I don’t have a spouse to convince on that score.
egregious @
98
I hear there are some fine shoes at that Blue America store.
RBG @ 102
That’s it! THANK you.
MrEgregious came around nicely on Webb, is suprised to see Kissell and Laesch headed for a possible win, and has questions about Alaska. Hey I call ‘em as I see ‘em. Also, it’s not just working for this race, we are beginning to prepare for victories in Congress in ‘08.
“Democratic Candidate XYZ, who received a surprising 45% of all votes running against Congressman Repub, is given even odds to win this year.”
We’re gonna see a lot of stories like that.
egregious @
104
Should we be asking our brokers about the futures market for shoes?
RBG @ 105
From the traffic on this blog last night, I’d say go for it!
So far Friends of Egregious have raised $4,475 for Diane Benson-D, running to defeat Don Young (R-Forced Abortions), to be the Congressperson for the entire state of Alaska.
If they can get enough radio and TV spots out linking Young to Bush, the war, and his Marianas colleagues Pombo and Doolittle, we might see a true upset victory.
egregious @ 107
I am in such awe of you and ET’s efforts for Diane. She’s a keeper. That money will buy a lot of media in AK, I’d bet. Please continue to keep us posted.
Hi all:
Just a quick comment from down here in Philly: a few of my in-laws (my lovely wife being from Staten Island, NY) attended Albany, and some even now live in Dutchess County. I’ve been keeping them plugged into this race and encouraging them stay informed and stay involved.
Best of luck to you Kirsten, and to all your supporters and staff!
[awe, shucks…]
egregious @ 1:31 pm (#107)
Great work, egregious.
I realize Alaska is a different political environment compared to the lower 48, but even so I think that being tied so closely to forced abortions would be the kiss of death for a Republican politician. Heck, I’m offended, and if I ever ran for office one of the planks would be “Free Birth Control for Everybody”.
EPU time. New thread above. Continuing the theme.
BTW, egregious, I gave to Diane Benson (via you) earlier this week.
Coyoteville–
Yay! And thanks!
You be welcome.
Well I’ve clocked in late, but I’m in!
Happy EPU, everybody!
egregious @ 107
I’m proud to be a Friend of Egregious!
Check out this incredible RNC attack ad running now in TN.

I’m proud to be a friend of Thunder!
Wow. Sorry I missed the liveblogging, but I was one of the folks out canvassing in Clifton Park. We knocked on about 600 doors today, and the lit drop should have hit about 25,000. I’ve been canvassing or phone banking almost every night for the past month, and have already arranged for the day before election day as a vacation day to work on GOTV.
There were (my guess) about 120 people gathered today to hear Kirsten, most of them union members gathered for the lit drop for Kirsten and NY Assembly candidate Bob Reilly (also a very good guy), plus a few of us there to do canvassing. Albany was one of three cities to hold the first Dean meetups (I’m proud to say I was there), and the Gillibrand campaign has the same “people-powered” feel. There’s plenty of work yet to do, but lots of hands doing it!
Dang! I just tuned in to FDL and see that I missed Kirsten’s live blog. I suggested to one of her operatives over at dKos that he contact Howie about featuring Kirsten in a Blue America interview here at FDL, so I’m thrilled that it came to pass. Howie seems to have have underestimated the vitriol of the right wingers in parts of NY-20, including southern Saratoga county. Sweeney’s predecessor Gerald Solomon was a reactionary nutcase, not a mainstream Republican. He had the distinction of proposing more draconian drug war legislation than any other congressperson.
There was an article in the Daily Gazette a couple days ago about Sweeney and his pal Tony Rudy. It told how Sweeney went on a junket to the Northern Marianas to check on the labor situation and said that everything he saw was totally above board. I haven’t heard Kirsten raise this issue in any of her ads yet, which surprises me.
The latest Sweeney ad has him sitting on a couch with his wife, acting like a big crybaby and saying how Kirsten said mean things about his family … I don’t know what that’s about.
I haven’t seen many Gillibrand campaign signs in these parts, but maybe that’s because they’re being stolen like the Hillary signs were a few years ago.
I wish Kirsten the best of luck, but like I say there are some pretty rabid Republicans in this neck of the woods so I’m keeping my fingers crossed. You go, girl!
