This year I've been asked to be a panelist at the CMJ (College Music Journal) Music Marathon in New York City, Oct. 31st through Nov. 4th. Basically, newer/underground bands from around the world (along with some long-horn artists with a new record and some cred to go with it) converge upon the city for five nights of "showcases" in most of the NYC music clubs taken over by CMJ. College radio stations, booking agents, music publishers, record labels, etc. follow. Overall hob-knobbing ensues. With a badge ($495 General, $295 Student-ouch!) you can club hop all night and attend the daytime panels at Lincoln Center.
Lots of panels ranging from "Acting Up: Music Activism 2006", to "Hiring and Maintaining an Entourage". There is "CBGB: The Ultimate Reunion" with Chris Stein (Blondie) and Tommy Ramone (Ramones), as well as the panel that I'm on – "Lollapalooza 15th Anniversary Reunion".
I have to say, it's a doozey of a panel: George Clinton, Duane Denison (Jesus Lizard), Gibby Hanes (Butthole Surfers), Maureen Herman (Babes In Toyland), and yours truly (L7). We don't need a moderator, we need the Chief of Police. Should be interesting, all of us lined up on the dais…authority figures. I can almost hear Jackie Gleason saying "Har har hardy har har!".
Next week I'll be bringing you The Spin I'm In PODCAST. Yippee! I'll be playing some tunes and putting my two cents in about….oh, you know, whatever.
FYI, my band is playing The Viper Room in Los Angeles tonight at 10:00 with A.R.E. Weapons from NYC. Come on down and get your groove on.

Ooooh! Do you think Bootsy Collins could do opening statements for the Libby trial?
did something happen to comments? or did you guys dissappear?
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 6
I’d expect him to break out into ‘Free your ass and your mind will follow.’ For starters.
Good to see ya, Fini…
My own laptop (an underpowered Rev.1 ‘Wallstreet’ PB bit the dust…using a ‘recycled’ Presario XP pro box (w/Firefox, of course….) Just waiting for a virus to reformat to Linux. Looks like ya got yours cranked back up, though.

I’m on a Dell, dude, but its got mostly Sony parts and is tricked out for my unreasonable multimedia demands I place on it. Last evening I was tweaking audio drivers for a DJ gig I am doing for a private party tomorrow and my Windows got some mud on em.
I had to pull the ladder out, grab my handy window washing scraper thingy and some cleaning fluid along with a 6 pack of Dr. Pepper to get back to “otay” as Buckwheat would put it.
Donita
Funk Me Up! George Clinton in 1977! great Friday fun. have a great weekend.
This is *so* funny

I’ve been to CMJ before. Had a great time.
I think.

I love that clip. Damn, what a band. Now that’s a party goin’ on.
Jane Hamsher @ 13
I hear ya sister!
I’m listening to that Teddybears tune with Iggy Pop, its rather odd and lovely. Never heard it before, nice track Donita!
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 17
Yeah I love that song. Ironic and funny, but dark and dreamy too. And there’s no one more appropriate to sing that chorus.
Sounds awesome. Wish I could be there! The Viper Room is where River Phoenix died (he’d come outside, I think). IIRC, Johnny Depp was an owner or partner in that club and was present that night. What’s new with the Viper Room?
I was in a band that played CBs for CMJ. We had a great time. I guess that makes me old? Fuck shit up in NYC!! They need a good kick in the ass………..or maybe just a “shove”.
Sid
I have a distaste for these industry panel gatherings that is rivaled only by attorney-label sit downs. Donita, promise me you’ll be mean to some label suit at this thing. Make em buy you drinks all night then pants em on the dancefloor or something.
Well I’m glad I’m back on my own laptop this Friday so I can post, been working on site and I just don’t use client’s computer’s for posting.
Lately I have to say, I’ve been in a Velvet Underground/Lou Reed/Mott the Hoople/Ian Hunter groove.
I think the Lou Reed was subtlley suggested by his performance in Blue in the Face, which I saw a couple weeks ago. I loved Smoke, and never got a chance to see Blue until I found it on NetFlix.
Here’s Lou with some political comments

I was looking at pictures of you, me Horris Grant and Chris Rock in Chicago a while back. Didn’t somebody grab your ass? I think it might’ve been Cindy Crawford.
Suspicious Minds — Elvis —
Superstition — Stevie Ray Vaugn –

Mercy Street — Peter Gabriel –
Just Like Ali — Tom Cochrane –
Spybreak — Propeller Heads –

makes scanning phosphors feel like a car chase.)

The Ballad of Marshal McLuhan — Radio Free Vestibule –
OT. TPM Cafe Election Central shows Zogby Int., 19 Oct, Lieberman 49%, Lamont 43%, nothing showing for the other Republican. Sound better?
reporting back on the new Beck album, The Information, after purchasing the CD (how very old school…)
short version: it’s good. nothing earth-shattering, pretty low-key, but finely crafted. the kind of album that grows on you with several listenings.
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 21
Oh no worries my friend. I know what I’m getting in to.
BTW — before the Cindy Crawford rumors get out of hand, that was a joke.
Somebody did grab Donita’s ass IIRC but it wasn’t her.

It was me.
Jane Hamsher @ 28
Oh no my friend. Luke Perry grabbed YOUR ass.
Hey firepups,
Read a great post from the snark-alicious Charles Pierce over at TAPPED
Now back out to the dance floor….

Donita (and others in & around NYC right now) -if you can sneak away for an afternoon next week, go up to the Bronx Museum and check out the Tropicalia exhibit…
Plenty of great Os Mutantes/Gal Costa et al. footage, plenty to think about regarding the intersection of music and political activism in a repressive system. I went two weeks ago and I’m still unpacking it.
The spin I’m in reflects that…
Caetano Veloso – “A little more Blue” – the artist in exile, sounds like he’s channeling Nick Drake.
Gilberto Gil – “Volkswagen Blue”
Jorge Ben – “Cassius Marcelo Clay” – an ode to Muhammed Ali
Gal Costa – “Destafinido” from her India lp.
Erasmo Carlos – “De Noite na Cama” – festival for your ears.
Os Novos Baianos – “Tinindo Trincando” great rock guitars.

Label suit? Is Howie Klein going to be there? :)
sticky @ 33
See, its posts like these that make me think I should move to the East Coast. This is the sort of thing there is no way in hell I will ever see in the middle of the cornfields.
But hey, on the upside from this post I have some more tunes to get off Napster for my recent Latin listening. I just discovered Calle 13 and have been digging on the new Nortec Collective. And the new Shakira album in Spanish is very well done.
Looks as though China has taken the leadership role in this whole North Korea thing. My how far we (U.S.) have tumbled in the last six years. Perhaps Venezuela can mediate the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
AP – China appealed for “coolheadedness” on all sides in the North Korean nuclear crisis Friday…
Our Secretary of State is a vey bad toady.
Jane Hamsher @ 36
I do. I even perversely felt a little hurt that he didn’t grab mine. I’m the one who used to have a crush on him.
The Viper Room? Tonight? Donita Sparks? Holy mac… I’m there.
sticky @ 33
Thanks for the head’s up and playlist. I just know I won’t have time to check out that exhibit though. Sounds cool.

Mary Jane!
The dogs love their new dog dish with the big paw print, it’s their water dish. And I am looking forward to getting home and finding my new hat.
Yipee!
hey donita!
you & george clinton on the same panel, discussing music. i wish i could be in the audience!!
i WILL be in the audience tonight however! can’t wait to rock of my work week blues to your fabulous new band! i’ll be the slightly tipsy, but respectful fan in the front, dancing my ass off!
I blame George Clinton.
If anyone wants to know what Donita’s new band sounds like, check this out.
I love that song.
Peterr @ 38
Meh, there’s this breed of slimedweller (and Donita knows what I am referring to here) label suit that Howie never has resembled. Howie actually has great taste in music, respect for the artists and more sense in his pinky toenail than these guys I am referring to. The slimedwellers have no taste, less sense than a 10 year old fat kid loose in an ice cream store and a complete disrespect for artists and creative types, yet spends the whole week at these things trying real hard to build credibility with every hot band in sight by overpromising, overhyping the band and generally being a nuisance.
Nora @ 46
Come on up and say hello.
Jane, I’ll send you Nick’s “free write” for English, about robots from outer-space who try to take over the stage from Parliment Funkadelic, George and Bootsy save day with cinematic style. You’ll love it!
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 49
Sorry – I left my snark tag off! I know the types of which you speak (they have some frightening siblings in my field as well), and share your opinion of Howie.
Have fun, Donita!
mary jane @ 51
Nick does have fabulous taste for someone in the zygotic state when all of that stuff was happening.
punaise @ 47
So do I. For his contributions (among many other things) to the LOUDEST show I’ve ever been to. P-Funk All-Stars. UMass/Amherst Fine Arts Center…Feb. 1994(?) Oh, and the show itself was circusy. WeirdO material to the max.
Second place on decibel scale is Little Feat, Spfld(MA)Civic Ctr. sometime prior to Lowell George’s demise in the early 1980’s.
Peterr @ 52
No problem man, I’m real tired today, the snark went over my head like calculus. Generally, every business has its banal convention guys that always show up and are like Steve Carrell in The Office.
I had almost forgotten about the BH Surfers. Gibby Hanes is funny.
I have a confession to make. I liked Gibby’s side project, The Jack Officers better than I like the BH Surfers.
When all those JAG officers were at the White House, I kept thinking about them all day. So, of course, I had to ask everyone I ran into that day, “So what do you think of all those JAG OFFICERS in the White House today?”
Anybody want to hear my appearance on The Young Turks?
Peterr @ 38
Calvin Klein suit labels
TRex @ 57
I haven’t even heard of The Jack Officers. Do tell.
Blank Kludge @ 8
Not a bad theme for this year’s elections.

Those types got their start in the dirty ’80’s…The cats used to laugh at them with their little Anvil briefcases, negotiating memo deals and publishing chisels, until they started moving up the food chain.
Bright side is, they crashed the biznezz into a wall at turn #3 with their punk pezzonovante ways before they could lock down industry ownership of all things digital. So much for good hair.

It DOES keep popping up in my head. Not sure Ned should use it on his ads (altho somebody has PFunk stuff in a commercial; some car co.? I forget, but was ’souprized’ hearing it ‘mainstream’.)
I love the Young Turks, kudos for the appearance TRex!
By the way, I did an interview with John Laesch the other day if anyone is interested. Bookmark for later after listening to TRex.
TRex @ 58

You sound so calm and together. I thought you’d sound more like a Nervous Nelly.
OK, I need to get some rest before psychosis settles in. Gonna hit the rack to make up for lost sleepy-bye time. Catch you guys later!
You sound so calm and together. I thought you’d sound more like a Nervous Nelly.
I had been awakened from a sound sleep. I slept right through my alarm. The phone rang and a guy said, “You’ve got 60 seconds.”
And I said, “Gmmmmph?! MMMMMMPH!!”
You can hear me trying to sneak ice cubes into a glass in the background to pour myself an iced coffee. That was my big lesson from this appearance. Multi-tasking and talk shows do not mix.
Of course, I think even if I had been all the way awake, I wouldn’t have been particularly nervous. It just seems like the natural state of affairs for me that I should be talking to thousands of people at once about what I think.
My wife and I havc become addicted to the Asylum Street Spankers lately.

CounterCoulter is a catchy term.
Donita—
Younger son was surprised I knew who you were, and that I liked your music too. I’m gonna send for an L7 sticker as a present for him.
Hi Donita,
Today I had your song “Can I Run” going through my head, maybe it’s a (barely) subconscious metaphor for post-habeus corpus America. I once quoted it on FDL Late Nite and Jane responded she was a friend of yours, and I was like, “why, of course.”
In case any lost soul wanders back down here, I’ll just offer that this Bonnie Raitt video made me go out and buy a thumb pick and a guitar slide.
