Via Atrios, I found a doozy of an editorial in The Hartford Courant:
…Spin One, you could say it illustrates a person's ability to change one's mind in light of new information.
Spin Two, it shows that Joe's views reflect the views of whomever he is massaging at the moment. Looks like he was cozying up to a popular President Bush at the time, a time so long, long ago.
That's the problem with situational beliefs. They reveal a mind sharply tuned to self-interested popularity, for sure, but a mind more focused on opportunism than on what's best for American citizens.
As a congressman or senator, certainly you can be coy until the deal goes down. You can be demure, hesitant, questioning, even stalling, but if you make your decision based on whether or not you will be re-elected or if it will make you more palatable as a candidate for the presidency, then you're a fraud and deserve to be voted out on your keister.
Ideally, a thoughtful person in Congress who is representing a state would take the time to study an issue closely and vote from his or her core beliefs.
I'm not sure Senator Joe has core beliefs anymore, having lived in Washington for so many years. His main core belief seems to be to say and believe anything that fits the moment that will get him re-elected.
Ouch! But if the beenie fits…
(Oh, and Stoller gives good…debate summary. Pass it on.)

Happy Birthday, Christy and Siun!
Joe Lieberman backed the wrong pony on Iraq and on most everything else. And he will pay. Senator Lamont will be assembling his Washington staff quite soon.
BAGHDAD, Iraq – The two-month old joint U.S.-Iraqi bid to crush violence in the Iraqi capital did “not meet our overall expectations,” as attacks in Baghdad rose by 22 percent in the first three weeks of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, the U.S. military spokesman said on Thursday.

The newest Zogby shows a 6-point difference.
Certainly the Courant is taking a principled stand and demonstrating hypocricy at every possibility. GOTV!
tfitznc at 5 — do you know what the time range was on the new Zogby poll? They decided not to issue the latest Qpoll because it was finished just before the first debate and there was a lot of volatility afterwards. Am wondering about the Zogby poll timeframe…

I didn’t see Schlesinger in that Zogby poll, as listed at TPM. Where are there more details on this, and I assume it was before the second debate at least…
In case you missed it, Matt Stoller has a great post about yesterday’s debate in CT on MyDD.

And yes, Urban Pirate, it is great news.
Happy Birthday to Redd and Siun,
Good news from our good ladies!
I just want to make clear that the propeller beanie has a long and honorable history in science fiction fandom that has nothing to do with the vacillating-holier-than-thou Joe Lieberman. Fans have even been known to wear black satin propeller beanies to formal events, like the Hugo awards ceremonies. It’s part of our tribal culture.
But that aside, the Englehart post is just about perfect.
Have a lovely day, firepups, and Happy birthday Christy and Suin! May all the good angels watch over you and bless your days.

Unopposed House Democrats Sitting On $26,288,418
by Chris Bowers, Wed Oct 18, 2006 at 09:20:57 PM EST
Amidst all of this talk about taking out loans to fund key races and newly emerging races, not enough attention has been given to the huge amount of money House Democrats who are unopposed for re-election are currently storing away in their campaign bank accounts. I just did a quick tallying using Open Secrets, and calculated that the 45 Democrats who are not facing a Republican opponent this November have $26,288,418 in their campaign bank accounts as of September 30th, 2006. I put together a web page that details the cahs on hand for each of the forty-five unopposed Democrats:
Unopposed Democratic Cash
For the sake of comparison, the DCCC currently has $34,867,692 cash on hand, and the NRCC has $36,019,485 cash on hand. Further, Rahm Emmanuel apparently believes that Democrats are ahead, tied or competitive in 58 Republican held seats. The amount of money unopposed House Democrats are currently sitting on would equal $453,248.59 to each of those 58 districts.
That $26.3 million should be the fruits of the successful 435-district strategy this cycle, where for the first time in a long time Democrats ran candidates in more districts than did Republicans. This is supposed to be one of the ways that the fifty-state strategy actually drives resources to swing districts, rather than draining resources from swing districts. It is particularly disgusting that unnamed Democratic consultants are trashing Howard Dean for running the fifty-state strategy, rather than pressuring all of the unchallenged Democratic incumbents to donate their entire campaign bank accounts to the DCCC and / or Democratic challengers. These incumbents do not need election cash, since they have already won their elections. What these incumbents do need is a Democratic majority so they can actually govern for their constituents…

did anyone see Bill O’Reilly on the View yesterday? When asked to list a ‘non-rethuglican’ traditionalist, the first name he uttered was Joe Lieberman. To which, Rosie interrupted, ‘but he’s going to be beaten by Ned Lamont’ Bill asked if she wanted to bet money on it and she said that she already had, she maxed out her contribution to Lamont’s campaign.

No Crappy Q-Poll in CT Yet, and Other Joementus News
by Matt Stoller, Thu Oct 19, 2006 at 11:27:04 AM EST
Bold is mine.
Ruby at 17 — I ought to have put a fandom disclaimer at the bottom of the post. LOL
“To my knowledge, Joe Lieberman has never been a member of first fandom. Any resemblance is merely coincidence. No taste in excellent literature should be implied by the above photo.”
“Ideally, a thoughtful person in Congress who is representing a state would take the time to study an issue closely and vote from his or her core beliefs.”
Wrong. A Congressman should vote the beliefs of his constituents. And if he doesn’t know how THEY believe, then replacement is due.
Englehart’s blog post at the Courant website is great, but I’m not sure you can call it an editorial. Technically, editorials are the official stance of the paper (whatever that may mean, while Englehart is speaking for himself.
Actually, he’s speaking for lots of people, as good political cartoonists do – but he’s not issuing the official Courant opinion.
I GOT IT!!!! I GOT IT!!!

In 2004, over 171,154 Americans donated $328,479,245 and countless hours of time to help John Kerry get elected President. Now, two years later, Democrats have a real opportunity to regain a majority in both chambers of Congress.
John Kerry? He’s still hanging on to $8,352,685 of our money, while Democratic candidates in competitive districts are short on funds, and the DNC, DCCC, and DSCC are out of money.
Tell John Kerry to “let our money go” and help take back Congress by sending an email to info@johnkerry.com.

Folks, we should forward that great Englehart blog to everyone we know in Connecticut! My mouse’ll be clicking away as soon as I post this.
My very favorite Stoller paragraph:
“So my sense is that Joe didn’t do that well, but he’s a really good liar. As I mentioned before, most of his time was spent talking about all the pork he had delivered for Connecticut and being cut off by Bob Schieffer, the moderator, for going over time every singe answer and rebuttal (seriously, watch for that tomorrow night). In a question Joe answered about all the ways he’s vowed to vacillate on Social Security, Lieberman bragged about personally passing a bill in August to protect corporate pensions. Naturally, after the debate it was revealed that Lieberman actually skipped the vote on the final bill. Thankfully, we were treated to the pleasurable moments when Schieffer cut off Joe’s mike after the first six times Joe tried to go over his allotted time. How awesome would it be if Joe were always moderated by Bob Schieffer, 24 hours a day? Pretty awesome.”
Perhaps someone can come up with a Scheiffer control for Lieberman? *G*
Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but Madsen (I know, I know, take it with a grain of salt) has a (very) short bit up about Liarman, his ties to Bill Buckley, and the mob money (Lansky, Genovese) that Dirty Joe has enjoyed ever since Schmuckley backed Shmoe in ‘88.

I agree. I just Spotlighted it to everyone at the Hartford Courant with my thanks.
Just checked out WSJ’s battleground states poll map. Nice to see that, of the seven senate races in which R’s are leading, three are within the margin of error, and of the ten in which D’s are ahead, none are within the MOE.
Nice.
Edit: I did that calculation “bye eye”; the races that have asterisks indicating “within MOE” are slightly different, but still in our favor.

Besides doing GOTV and volunteering, getting involved in pressuring incumbents with unnecessarily large pools of cash to give to competitive campaigns is perhaps the most worthy use of our time leading up to the elections.
If we could effectively reallocate this cash it would radically change the campaign landscape in our favor.
Please do anything and everything you can help Bowers in his plan to identify such representatives and to apply pressure to those representatives who are identified via Bowers’ efforts!!!

The Great Congressional Wire Transfer
by Chris Bowers, Thu Oct 19, 2006 at 01:01:32 PM EST
After talking with a wide number of people who are interested in helping, I have decided to go through with the campaign I proposed last night to transfer funds from safe Democratic campaign accounts to the accounts of competitive Democratic challengers. In order to start the campaign, I need your help.
Look at the following list of representatives: Unopposed House Democrats Campaign Cash. Choose one representatives, preferably someone near you. Fine the following information on this represenative, and post it in the comments:
The email and phone number for their campaign office.
The amount of money they have given to other Democrats and to Democratic committees this cycle. You can use Open Secrets for this information.
Whether or not s/he has ever been in a close election.
Choose a Representative near you from the list of 45 Representatives here, and find this information. Then post the information in the comments. If you have the time, move on to a second representative after you have finished you first representative.
We are going to make this work. A lot of people are on board with this campaign, and finding this information is crucial to its success. If we can help facilitate a transfer of millions of dollars to competitive districts from safe districts in the final weeks of the campaign, we can make a huge impact on the outcome of the campaign. Please, get on this right away. We need to make this happen ASAP.

I am impressed with Christy Hardin Smith interaction in the TV with the other blogger, Paul Mirengoff. Actually, I’m not interested about submitting this comment or make some reaction through the internet. I’m a new comer and just want you to know that this time I will change course by voting the democratic candidates. I’m naturalized citizen and I’ve been here for more than 20 years. I voted for President Bush (Father), President Clinton twice, Senator Dole and President Bush (Son). What I’m concerned are the Health Care System issue, the Social Security and the economic condition to be improved so that these young generation can have better living condition and to provide continuous SS pension for the coming baby boomers who will retire soon. This administration is focusing on Iraq and not the domestic problems I just stated above. I don’t care whether it’s Hilary or Obama. I just want to change the administration from Republican to Democrat.

I agree with you that Christy came off very well on C-Span. The Powerline blogger had his Republican talking points all ready to go, but really didn’t seem to know what to do or say once he had read his script.

U.S. security officials have prevented an influential Islamic scholar from attending a conference in New York.
WEB EXCLUSIVE
By Michael Isikoff and Mark Hosenball
Newsweek
Updated: 3:54 p.m. PT Oct 18, 2006
Oct. 18, 2006 – A leading member of Britain’s Muslim community, headed to New York for an academic conference, was forced to leave his transatlantic flight without explanation by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security earlier today.
The removal of Kamal Helbawy, the 80-year-old founder of the Muslim Association of Britain, came just minutes before his American Airlines flight was due to take off from London’s Heathrow Airport. The incident is the latest instance in which U.S. security officials have denied prominent Muslim leaders entry to the United States.
The move startled officials at New York University Law School who had invited Helbawy to be a featured speaker at a conference the organization is sponsoring Thursday night on the Muslim Brotherhood movement. “He’s a really respected guy,” said Paul Cruickshank, a fellow at the law school’s Center for Law and Security, which had organized the conference. “He’s very influential within the Muslim community in Britain and his name is recognized throughout the world.”
Spokesmen for the Homeland Security Department and FBI declined any immediate comment on why Helbawy, a British citizen with a valid passport, was removed from the plane. A senior U.S. government official, who declined to be identified talking about sensitive matters, said he was puzzled by the incident because there appeared to be no intelligence reporting linking Helbawy to terrorism…

It would have been a rather grievious misstatement once…But to repeat it after a somewhat public correction from his nemesis, Keith Olbermann, I would opine that Bill O’Reilly is a thoroughly dishonest shill whose talents would be better spent on the gloveless upkeep of neglected interstate comfort stations. And since Mirengoff has repeated it, let him be the ‘plumber’s mate’.
And as for O’Reilly’s threat against the blogosphere…Although his familiarity with anything handheld that is larger than a personal ‘vibrating egg’ is questionable – Please, Bill, please come down from your ice cream castle and meet us in the trenches, brave man that you aren’t.
Since you and you other media ‘enemy combatants’ are no longer protected by even the barest sliver of legality, I am sure that the resulting interrogation (occuring after your poop-filled pants with you in them have been rounded up) regarding what you don’t know and how long you have not known it will be most mutually…enlightening.

Dear Lord. I just heard Conrad Burns talking about the secret plan. People were out and out laughing at him.
John– Yeah- the governor’s race just tightened a bit- but the gooper is still ahead.
There are a couple of strange possibilities out there- including a real melee- like
Dems win five seats and Spectre changes parties to give dems the ability to reverse the fucked up death to defendant’s rights bill- followed by Ol Joe switching sides to give balance back to the goopers. Could be interesting.
Best outcome is that dems just win it outright- but it’s still not clear where the damned sixth seat will come from.

Heather Wilson was already in deep feces- her race is rated “toss up” by Charlie Cook- who says he won’t ever rate an incumbent worse than toss up unless they are indicted-
Bye- bye Mrs. Pervert Pie!
Having finished “How Bush Rules” while on a trip to San Diego this week, I noted that Blumenthal makes an important, but almost offhand, observation about the Cheney Veep Candidate Search of 2000. At the time, I was awestruck by the ambition that resulted in, “I Pick Me!” Our friend Sydney points out, though, that suitors for W’s hand were required to submit all their info — financial, personal, familial — to Cheney for review. Any Veep search always includes oppo research (”What can they uncover about you that will embarass us? What can WE uncover about you that will embarass us?”). Cheney clearly retains all this in files to this day, about all W’s Veep wannabes.
Does anyone recall who Cheney vetted for the job he eventually took himself? By summer 2000, the top spot was Junior’s, so I’d guess many wanted #2. Who was on that list, submitting all their dirty laundry, now hoarded and Lorded Over by Cheney? Maybe they don’t really need the NSA spying after all, although I don’t doubt they use it Against All Enemies.
Cheney, of course, vetted himself (ha!) according to Bigfoot Karen Hughes.
So why does GW Clusterfuck continue to attack america?- He hates our freedom!

Kids in the system make allegations all the time, true or not. But a court-appointed lawyer doesn’t take kids out to eat or hang out with them–they only see them (and rarely ever at that) before a court date, and if the kid is already a ward of the state, these wouldn’t be custody hearings. Foster and group home kids don’t even attend their hearing most of the time as they are procedual. It’s sad to say, but when people step outside of their assigned roles to initiate more intimate contact with minors, their intentions should be questioned. From reading the link, it is always the cover-up that gets you.
