(Photo with quote from Time magazine, Nov. 2004)
With the polls looking increasingly grim for the GOP, the highest-ranking deer in the NRA Republican National Committee chairman Ken Mehlman has sent a talking-points e-mail urging supporters to pimp the recently passed torture bill, says Bob Geiger:
We expect a charlatan like Mehlman to depict the rubber-stamp, GOP Congress bowing to Bush's every whim as an example of how they "work together" -- no harm, no foul. That's his job.
But, of course, Mehlman didn't stop there. In the e-mail -- with a subject line of "Saving American Lives" -- the RNC chief conveyed to his GOP brethren that this law was a reason to not even consider voting for a Democrat in three weeks, saying the "Democrats in the House voted against interrogating terrorists."
He followed that incredibly misleading line of crap by declaring that Democrats in both the House and the Senate "voted against this bill out of concern for terrorist civil liberties" and asking his followers to "take a stand for a stronger America by doing everything possible to ensure that these Democrats aren't given even more power in Washington."
Okay, well, let's give Kenny M. some credit for a previously undiscovered sense of humor -- the notion of Democrats having "even more power" is pretty funny. But the rest of the quotes are a hint of just how ugly and desperate Republican rhetoric is going to become in the closing weeks of the campaign... up to and including accusing all Democrats of being traitors.
If Mehlman is determined to sharpen the contrast between the parties by using lies, though, I have no problem with our side using the truth to return the favor.
If I was on TV as a Democratic politician or talking-head pundit responding to Mehlman's smears, my reply would be simple: We think there's a better way to defend America than by torturing people. (And the GOP can play as many word games with the Geneva Convention as it likes, but torture is exactly what the bill endorses.)
We tortured people at Abu Ghraib, and that didn't exactly win us the war in Iraq, did it? And the unanimous opinion of our intelligence agencies in the NIE is that what we've done in Iraq may be causing us to lose the war on terror.
Losing in Iraq, losing the war on terror, and losing our American values isn't a good combination. And that's why Ken Mehlman and the Republicans are going to wake up on Nov. 8 after losing an election. They're losers, and the American people have had enough of them.

today is kevin drum’s birthday too.
Are you trying to say that Kevin Drum is a loser, Lina?
I was almost first.
you know, if mehlman, rove, et al., lose as big as they’re projected to lose, Bush will be a pariah in the GOP for the next two years. If they fail at the only thing they know how to do (elections), there’s nothing left.
zero. zilch. nothing.
2008 will be all about running away from all things Bush.
See, I’d like just one Democrat to respond to Mehlman “you know, Republicans like Ken are trying to scare people to distract them from all the closet gays in the Republican Party. Any thoughts on that Ken?”
I like Kevin Drum. I read him regularly.
I was going to say, “Fuck Ken Mehlman.” But, then I thought, no, I couldn’t do that, even if I were gay.
mehlman is about as pathetic a creature as you can find on the political stage today.
Am I the only one nervous about this big lead???
lina @ 4
The idea of Democrats getting “even more power” reminded me of a discussion I had with the woman who is now my mother-in-law last year. She was under the impression that Dems controlled the Senate. Both houses. And at first, she didn’t believe me when I told her she was unfortunately wrong. The GOP spin is really good at making people who aren’t paying close attention think that they, indeed are the underdogs, fighting desperately for the rights of like-thinking citizens. By blaming the Democrats every time something doesn’t go their way, the GOP gives the Dems a certain kind of mojo, but it’s a bad kind of mojo. And people fall for it. A few months later, I found out that my MIL no longer supports Bush. She didn’t want to talk about it, was embarrassed about it, but I figured/hoped, if they’re losing her, the GOP is truly lost.
slappymagoo @ 10
Do we have the same mother-in-law?
Mine not only doesn’t like Bush anymore, but has stopped watching O’Reilly and most of Faux news. Which is not to say she’s become a raving liberal, but at least she’s no longer a Rethug.

i’m not counting any chickens before they’re hatched. my heart’s been broken too many times.
Didn’t get this into the last thread:
The Zogby CT-Sen poll was in the field Oct 10-16:
Lieberman Continues to Lead
Anti-war liberal Ned Lamont’s revolt against moderate Democrat-turned-independent Joe Lieberman has lost significant momentum over the past three weeks. While a late September Zogby Interactive poll had the Democratic nominee surging, the latest poll puts Lieberman ahead by six points. But the race is still within the margin of error, there are still weeks to go, and anything can happen.
[…]
Source: Zogby Interactive survey of 531 likely voters statewide, conducted Oct. 10 through 16, 2006. MOE /- 4.3 percentage points.

Well then, lets think like the Gopers for a moment. Under a Demcratic Congress, folks at the top could be looking at some serious consequences once some semblance of oversight is brought to bear.
IMO, BushCo has no intention of letting something as quaint as an “Election” get in their way.
I have a very bad feeling about this.
daily sneak blogging from work -
I’d talk to ya Ken, but I’m a little busy ‘gingerly pampering terrorists’ right now !
btw Ken, some guy named Mike Rogers here to see you
Could we also point out that not a single Democrat has ever said that we should not interrogate terrorists? Ever. Repugs are clearly substituting the word “interrogate” for “torture.” While stating proudly that Dems do not support the use of torture in any circumstances, we must also address the facts about (Geneva Convention compliant) interrogation. The repugs have been repeating that lie about Dems not supporting interrogation since before Feingold’s Censure resolution. They have been getting away with it for far too long. Feingold corrects the record every chance he gets, but he doesn’t get nearly enough chances compared to the repug slime.

Are we in-laws?
My parents are in their eighties and too old to change allegiences, but are disappointed/pissed… are not giving money this round and say they don’t see any point in making the trip to the polls in Nov…
They’ll be out that day for a regular chemo treatment, so may relent… but I’m hoping they will be too tired to make the extra stop.
I am not as worried about KKKarl’s “October surprise” now after the Mastur-gate “September bombshell”, but I see that the White House is soooo confident that I am almost more worried now about the Diebold “November Miracle”. In some ways I almost wish they would do it since it would be such an obvious theft people might rise up, but then I think, most people wouldn’t do a damned thing. Sigh….
Hey gang! I have been scarce lately what with getting married and buying a house but I am driving by to announce that my friend David Gereighty is officially the nominee for Louisiana’s first Congressional District! With our open primary system there will be another democrat in the race, but David is the candidate poised to take advantage of discontent with the current Republican leadership in Congress. He is poised to take advantage of the fact that his opponent Bobby Jindal is the worst kind of Republican Rubber Stamp voting against his constituents. He is poised to take advantage that Bobby Jindal fairly blatant about the fact that he is planning on running for Governor of Louisiana next year. If he runs for governor he may very well win as Democratic governor Kathleen Blanco is somewhat injured politically. We must help David win and put an end to Jindal’s Rubber stamping and his run for governor.
See this link at DCCDC about Jindal: http://www.dccc.org/races/cand.....ighty.html
Please help David if you can. Please contribute through Act Blue. We need to stop Bobby Jindal in his tracks. We do not need a right wing republican in the Governors Mansion.
Thanks for listening to my drive by rant.
Peace to all.

I AM NOT A REPUBLICAN!
What a desperate idiot.
Good lord these people are scum.
OT if you see vichy dem rahm emmanuel ask him if he thinks a 50 state strategy for the Democratic Party is a good idea.
Do the dems have a big lead? Well- not exactly. They are not leading in enough seats (outside the margin of error) to win the house or the senate.
On the other hand- they are within the margin of error in enogh seats that if they win a reasonable share of em- they’ll get the 15 they need.
In the senate- things are MUCH more iffy. They need to win three out of the following four races:
Missouri, Tennessee, Virginia, and New Jersey.
Tough order- but not impossible.

Not a loser just a ‘Sensible Liberal’
It’s true that if Clusterfuck loses congress (either house) he will become a LOSER in the eyes of most goopers- an anathma. His likeness will be torn from the gooper book of winners- he will never be mentioned again without a sneer- and he will move from Lame Duck to Dead Duck. It’s one of the most fascinating possibilities out there- I hope that we all get to see it- as the goopers ear his living flesh.

Ok one more little post about David Gereighty’s recent endorsement:
If our wonderful hosts have a few extra minutes I would really love for them to talk to David. He is the real deal. He is a guy that is just as fed up as us with what is going on in Washington. He has no secret political agenda, he does not come from a political family. He is just a citizen who decided to run for office because he thought someone should oppose Republican Rubber Stamp Bobby Jindal. No person in the Democratic Party leadership nationally or in Louisiana thought there is a chance for Democrats in the First District. David stepped up anyway because he had “Had Enough”! He wanted to fight for what he thinks is right for our country. While Bobby Jindal runs for governor, David Gereighty is running for Congress. We need David as our Representative in Louisiana’s First District. We need a full time Congressman working for our interests, not big business.
Again, thanks to our hosts for this blog. I am forever in you ladies debt for helping me keep my sanity in an insane world. Thanks for your indulgence.
Please see the press release about David’s Endorsement.

Gereighty Receives Louisiana Democratic State Party Endorsement
Metairie - October 15, 2006
David Gereighty, candidate for Congress in Louisiana’s 1st District,
received on Saturday, October 14th, the official endorsement of the
Louisiana State Democratic Party for the U.S. 1st Congressional District
race. Gereighty stated “I am honored to receive the endorsement of the
Democratic Party. We are bringing together people of all political
affiliations who care about the rebuilding and revitalizing the 1st
District”.
Gereighty noted that the current representative has voted against the
interests of the people of the District on many issues. “Health Care and
medical insurance is of vital importance to all people in our community”,
Gereighty said. “We need a Representative that will fight for full medical
coverage for everyone in the District, of all ages and of all incomes.”
Representative Jindal voted for billions in our tax dollars for medical
facilities in Iraq, while he consistently voted against medical coverage for
working people in this country, Gereighty noted. He opposed expanding
access to the military’s TRICARE health insurance program to thousands of
Reservist and National Guard members, even though 20 percent of all
Reservists do not have health insurance, a problem that rises to 40 percent
among those aged 19 to 35.
Additionally, Jindal supported the recently-passed Medicare prescription
drug legislation language that prohibits Medicare from negotiating Medicare
prescription drug prices which keeps drug prices in the U.S. at twice the
cost of other countries.
Gereighty noted that Jindal has continually stated his lack of dedication to
the district. The Times Picayune (October 12, 2006) stated “It’s no secret
that Congress was his second choice.” Jindal emphasized in the 2004
congressional race and again this year and most recently on WWL-TV that he
is not the type to stay in one job too long (i.e. lack of dedication). “If
you want to elect somebody to be here 20 or 30 years, I’m not your person,”
Jindal is quoted as saying. Gereighty stated “I will be working for the
people of the 1st Congressional District to get the work we need
accomplished. Jindal will not be focusing on the needs of the people of the
1st District if he is running for Governor.”
Gereighty has also been endorsed by the Jefferson Parish Democratic
Executive Committee.

They have no intention of losing control. Whatever is necessary, they’ll do it.
BTW- have you seen their “These Are The Stakes” Halloween video spot?
Scurrilous.
As a poster on Salon.com noted:
_____
After 5 years of granting the Bush administration carte blanche to do anything they wanted to stop the “evildoers” (including the recent suspension of habeas corpus), why are the terrorists still such a deadly threat?
Wouldn’t a logical person therefore conclude that if the current crew stays in power, they will contintue to FAIL to solve this problem — especially when their mantra is ’stay the course’?
Sounds like a great argument to vote Democratic.
_____
Yeah, but, I fear that the fix is in.
.
Mehlman is running around in a very tight rhetorical circle, and he wants his minions to join him. Sounds good to me.
Here’s what he’s talking about:
We’re scared of the terrorists.
We must lock them up and torture them so that they’ll tell us where the other terrorists are and what they plan to do.
(Everybody in the world knows what’s really up: If you scare us, we need to lock you up and torture you, because we’ll never really be sure whether you’re a terrrorist unless you confess. But there’s no need to address the hidden agenda. The Democrats can slap him down with his own phony justifications.)
The simple Democratic answer: Torture and abuse breed more terrorists. The administration is bursting at the seams with confirmations of this simple and predictable fact.
So run, Mehlman, run, around and around. Faster! Faster! The terrorists you’re chasing are coming up behind you! Run!
I really think he needs to be referred to as “the unmarried Ken Mehlman”. And if anyone on the right bitches about it, we can amend it to “the unmarried Ken Mehlman, not that there’s anything wrong with that”.
On the White House confidence about the election: there is a certain element of gamesmanship here which I think goes to a deeper psychology among the public. Most people want a winner. Any sort of talk about uphill battles and we’re behind and so forth may energize the complacent true believer; this, however, is outweighed by turning off the wishy-washy soft supporter who doesn’t want to identify himself with the losing side.
Frank Probst @ 34
I do like that idea or “Merry Bachelor Ken Mehlman.”
A million years ago, when John Ashcroft was explaining to congress that he couldn’t fight the terrorists without the Patriot Act, I always wanted some senator to ask: Then, Mr. Ashcroft, has it ever occurred to you that you are not the right person for this job?
Ken Mehlman as a newborn
OT -and way late (I don’t know how much there is to go) but c-span is having a very good “Detaining Enemy Combatants” program that is getting to some of the sane questions/hard questions that should have been discussed in, oh, say - the Executive or Legislative or both - branches.

That’s what I like about rhetorically tagging them as “losers.”
Ken says that the Dems in the House voted against interrogating terrorists.

laura @

This is the flaw in the GOP’s much-heralded voter-ID and GOTV project. The pissed-offed-ness crosses many lines in 2006; their IDing along demographic and marketing-wizardry tokens may fail them, but Democrats still need to carry every candidate across the finish with ID and GOTV.
… in other words:
========
Had Enough?
========
won’t be ENOUGH.
DR @ 41
They’re probably in a blind trust.
(There was a joke like that about Bush Sr. during the Reagan administration…)
Mehlman’s spiel is just another example of the Right’s standard mixture of lies, ad hominem attacks, and strawmen. They are too lazy or too inept to get their facts straight or construct a logical argument. It’s so much easier to just make stuff up. Why address a criticism if you all you need to do is call the critic disloyal, weak, or maybe even a traitor? The goal is to deflect attention from the disasters, screwups, and criminality of this Administration and somehow make it about those who disagree.
We have seen this over and over again. Bush says you’re with him or with the terrorists. Ann Coulter says anyone who disagrees in any way with anything is a traitor. While what she says is shrill, is it really any different from Joe Lieberman slamming anyone who criticizes Bush?
The problem is that this strategy of shooting the messenger (or anyone handy) is getting old. Republicans trying to blame Foleygate and its coverup on the Democrats only produced catcalls. With Iraq in flames and Afghanistan falling back into chaos, with an Administration drowning in scandal and corruption whose only argument is: Trust us, how lame and pathetic is it for a Ken Mehlman to come out for the thousandth time and say, Don’t pay attention to us and our failures. Democrats are WEAK. In other words, look something shiny over there.

We were leading Penn State 17-3 last Saturday, and had dominated them. Knocked their first and second string quarterbacks out of the game. The third string guy comes in and scores a TD early in the 4th quarter.
So now it’s 17-10, the crowd comes alive and get realy loud, and we’re all thinking “here we go…” But you know what? Both the defense and the offense stepped up and finished. And that’s what the Dems will do in 3 weeks. FINISH THEM!

HAH!! What a useless piece of oversimplification.
The problem with Mehlman is he relies on his party’s inbred marketing folks to tell him this crap. He forgets there are caveats the Repug consultantocracy would preface any such pronouncements.
They’d tell him, In the aggregate, among voters XX years of age to YY years of age, with Z1 to Z2 amount of income, voters owning this vehicle tend to vote Party A/Party B by a CC% margin.
And Mehlman smooshes it all into less than half the words and tries to use a broad brush to paint that over all Repugs/Dems.
The couple I know that are obsessives about doing yoga are hardcore Republicans.
Gun owners I personally call friends are Dems and Independents.
My Beemer-owning buddy is a staunch Libertarian.
None of the above would get caught dead driving a Lincoln or a Volvo.
Mehlman and his peeps are trying so hard to fit everything into a small, simple frame that continues to support and justify their existence that they outright lie. They’ve done this simplification so much, so often, that they no longer ken that everything they now push is fact-free.
Ashcroft says that GW Clusterfuck should be trusted with the right to take away the rights of whomever he choses. Ashcroft was not asked if the next two hundred presidents should also be given such trust.
Ashcroft’s a fuckin idiot- as if the constitution should be changed annually depending on the character of the current person in the White House.
Finally read something useful the other day about this micro targeting. Some gooper is using it in a race against a dem who voted against opening some state land to snowmobiles. The goopers were able to access the records of every snowmobile owner in the district and contact each JUST ON THAT ISSUE- not on gay marriage or some other bullshit that the owners might not be hot on.
Now THAT makes sense- much of the rest of it is bullshit. They already know who the registered goopers are- and that’s enough in most cases.
By the way –
