As Howie said so well yesterday:
No, not for a cup of coffee. Our– yours, mine, ours– Act Blue page is kicking ass. It's only been a few short months since Crooks and Liars, Firedoglake and Down With Tyranny combined our fundraising activities and we're already the second biggest money raiser in the whole system, right after our pals at Daily Kos, Swingstate Project and MyDD. [We never got around to some worthy candidates like Darcy Burner (WA), Linda Stender (NJ), Tim Walz (MN), and Gary Trauner (WY) and the Netroots Page is a good place to donate to those folks.]
We want to try something different today, something a little unusual. Today it's all about $5 contributions. We always appreciate any contribution, big or small. And this week we have a goal. We want to get 1,000 contributions between the 3 blogs, that's 5 grand in total– and 1,000 people who will feel part of the great victory we sense is coming in 20 days. We want everyone to feel part of that November 8 and everyday after– how we saved our country from fascism. Take a look at our candidates. $5.00 for any one of them is what we're asking everyone to think about this week– between today and next Wednesday. Starting now.
If you have been thinking about giving to an of our Blue America candidates, please do so today, if you can. Time is running out for the money to be useful to them for this campaign — this isn't a decision you can put off for a couple of weeks. So if you have a fiver to spare, please consider sharing it with one of our great candidates on the Blue America page.
Consider it a birthday present for Siun and I. But more than that, consider it a gift that you'll be giving to the entire nation come November 7th — a gift that you will have a big hand in giving. And if you can't afford a fiver, or even if you can, please give some time to GOTV efforts for a candidate in your area. Thanks, for everything that everyone is doing — for our candidates, for this nation, and for my Peanut and all of yours.
(Apologies to the Great Depression singers who made Brother, Can You Spare a Dime so popular.)

Happy birthday, ladies!
I’m on my way over to Blue America to make a donation as a birthday present. I think it’s a fabulous gift to ask for Christy and reflects the wonderful, altruistic person that you are.
Love you lots.
Christy -
Although off topic, this breaking story, mentioned in a prior thread, might be of sufficient interest to mention now: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15329781/
Christy, you can be very persuasive. Happy birthday to you and Siun!
SP, CPA: Clinton’s fault.
:-)
Oh birthday girls, I gave your present last night!! If I’d only known it was a special day today, I’d have given today instead with a big bow on it!
OT — I thought of this after watching Bob Shrum and Pat Buchanan indulging in mutual back scratching on Hardball just now, agreeing thoroughly with each other about Iraq and John McCain…
It must be the Apocalypse, surely, when Shrum and Buchanan do the ham-and-egg together. Rapture must begin any moment now.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO TWO OF THE SWEETEST LADIES OF THE LAKE! (You know who you are…)
HEY. I don’t usually shout (well, yeah I do, but anyway) and I’ve never done this before, but I am in need of a brain or two to pick.
Do any of you fine readers live in the NE or SE section of CO? I’m talking Sterling, Ft. Morgan, approximately and points east, or in the vicinity of Lamar?
IF so, please email me at my “FDL HANDLE(see above)” at mindspring dot com, asap pls. Oh, and put HEY JACQRAT! in the subject, so I’ll see you.
Many thanks!
EPU’d, hope people will go back briefly to the previous thread and respond to this question from our resident 18 yr old political genius.
George @ 37
Rayne I love that movie. It was one of the highlights of my life to touch the actual Ghostbusters car.
I made a donation to Charlie Brown, in honor of our Nate, and to Diane Benson at egr actblue.
happy birthday, christy. :)
Ask and ye shall be given (via Act Blue) with best wishes and warm thanks to both Christy and Siun.
Jane Hamsher @ 2
I asked my friends/family to donate to the Lamont campaign in lieu of gifts for my birthday, earlier this month. Got a bunch of thank you letters from the campaign (I guess they mentioned the donations were made on my behalf) and that was a wonderful present.
If anyone has a birthday between now and November 7th, you might consider having contributions made in your honor to the candidate of your choice (or one of the ActBlue progressives)
Rayne at 6 I thought of this after watching Bob Shrum and Pat Buchanan indulging in mutual back scratching on Hardball just now, agreeing thoroughly with each other about Iraq and John McCain…
They’re setting us up for Unity ‘08, McCain/Lieberman.
Rayne – you captured one of my favorite lines in the movie. No one could do it better than Bill Murray –
Dr. Peter Venkman: Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together – mass hysteria.
The other Bill Murray exchange I loved was in Sigorney Weaver’s bedroom when she’s channelling Zeul (sp)
Thanks, everyone. Just went out for dinner with my mom and The Peanut. Have I mentioned that you guys are the greatest?
Sure everybody goes on national television and helps save the nation on their birthdays :)
Hope you are getting some good 3 generation photos.
egregious @ 17
just another day at the office…
Great project…
I chipped in $170, divided equally, $5 each, plus $15 to ActBlue. That bought a lot of contributions to a lot of great candidates.
Kudos to Howie for all his energy to such good ends.

Yeah, the groundswell from the cocktail weenie set pitched as some sort of populist uprising.
Also, California Republicans are now urging their candidate who sent out racist flyers urging Hispanics against voting to step down.
Also, check out Political Wire, they have the letter from Mrs. Don “The Strangler” Sherwood.
She is quite upset about how her families private life is being used for politcal purposes.
Oh right, I forgot Mrs. Sherwood, private conduct only matters if you are a Democrat.

egregious at 17 — hehehehe It has been a little surreal today. Generally, I sit around and mope and think about all of the goals that I haven’t accomplished. I started my day on C-Span today…that sort of undercut that whole wallowing in crappy self-esteem right there. *g* TRex and I were laughing about that earlier today. :) (And you know that I am clearly way too tired when I type in Nov. 11th instead of Nov. 7th. Getting up at 5 am to get to a teevee studio will do that, no matter how much coffee you ingest later in the day…I’m just saying…)
Just signed up for $5 apiece for the 5 CA candidates on your list a 10% tip.
Was hoping I could do much more, but talk about lousy timing: I went to the dentist Monday and found out one of my molars is cracked in half. (Jaw muscles of a pit bull, thank you very much.)
Without dental insurance (does ANYONE still have that?) I’m looking at a bill over $1,000 minimum; more than twice that if I fall into the 20% where this kind of break also requires a root canal.
I’m probably in the top 10% of the country in terms of wages, and while this’ll cramp my style for a couple of months, it’s not anything that will throw me into bankruptcy. But what I want to know is HOW on earth other people manage expenses like these? Like all the people with house payments that are 3x what mine is, who have actual kids instead of just a dumb cat to feed.
Yep, the war on the Middle Class is going very well, indeed.
GW Clusterfuck on the campaign trail again:
“I know this man- he’s like my brother- he would NEVER strangle his mistress- might knock her around a little ta keep her in line- but strangle? Tha’s impossible.”
The guy in Orange County is blaming it all on one of his (now former) staffers.
The mailing house says he himself called and checked on the letter, to make sure it went out quickly.
Pretty nearly every GOoPer in CA is telling him to quit now, and he’s refusing, because he thinks he’s winning (against Loretta Sanchez!) and will win the election. The district is 35 percent Latino: I don’t know what universe he lives in.
Lou Dobbs showing americans how to steal elections using Die Bold machines.
ArthurKC-Nice work!
Happy Birthday (mine is in a couple of days). Just sent a nice birthday gift via Act Blue – thanks for the continued push!
OT Your daily gas and oil prices
Average price for regular gasoline 10/19/06 in 50 states and DC

Average national price: $2.220, up $.001 from yesterday
Down 50.3 cents from same time last year.
Highest recorded national average price: $3.057 9/5/2005
Highest average price: Hawaii $2.993

Nymex Crude Future $58.50, up $.85
Dated Brent Spot $58.76, up $1.79
WTI Cushing Spot $58.50, up $.85
I believe this is the first time since gas prices began to fall in early August that they have risen on a daily basis however slightly. This may not be the end of the price declines but is evidence that point may not be far off. In oil, prices have once again bounced off their floor which appears to remain in the $58/bbl area.
Not bragging but dropped a total of $100.00 yesterday. Please drop by and give the Fighting Dem that I am working for in AZ who was spotlighted at Taylor Marsh’s.
Herb Paine is running against the slightly tainted John Shadegg.
Happy Birthday, girls!
Wish I could do more, but I went to the dentist a couple days ago and found out that I’ve cracked a molar in half (jaws like a pit bull, thank you very much).
I don’t have dental insurance, so I have to cough up the $1,043 it’s going to cost to get the tooth fixed/crowned. Oh, and there’s a 20% chance that this kind of break also requires a root canal, which would up the ante by about 175%.
Now, I’m lucky to be a contractor making pretty good money, living in a house small enough and bought enough years ago so that my house payment is probably less than a quarter of the average house payment around California. This will cramp my style for 2-3 months, but it’s not going to send me into bankruptcy or anything.
What I want to know is how other people handle this sort of “oops” – people with actual kids rather than just a dumb cat to feed, people who aren’t lucky enough to work at home and have to spend a fortune on gas and keeping a car running in order to commute to a job, etc. etc.
Looks to me like there’s one war the Republicans are actually winning handily: the war on the Middle Class.
Let’s see on the Republican moral reporbate update.
(R)Rep. Jim Gibbons in Nevada is linked to some 911 calls from a drunk woman alleging assault….
(R) Heather Wilson in New Mexico is linked to efforts to steal and hide a report involving her husband and some investigation regarding children….
(R) Congressman in California is linked to racist flyers urging Hispanics against voting.
George W. Bush(R-Delusional Asswipe) is actively campaigning for recent known adulterer and alleged abuser (R) Don Sherwood.
(R) Jim Kolbe has been referred to the ethics committee for allegations of wrongdoing with underage pages.
Charlie Bass(R) NH makes a sleazy ethnically remark about Bernie Sanders–stating he should go back to New York and drive a cab…like the dirty Jew he is….(I added the last line, Bass implied it)
Nice people, nice party.

My comment there re a discussion of Lieberman’s kids and Lamont’s kids [you regulars here at fdl know exactly what’s coming]
“Can we please leave EVERYBODY’S kids out of it? Allow people in public life to have a tiny bit of privacy for their families? It’s hard enough growing up in a political family without your every action stalked by the press, including internet press. If you have a teenager, or if you remember being a teenager figuring out who you are, then you know what I’m talking about. Please, show some mercy for these kids. Thanks.”
OT
ABC’s Diane Sawyer is in Pyongyang and was just reporting that the North Koreans have declared a “no first use” policy, I repeat no first use.
Does anyone find this as hysterical as I do? There are 2 fundamental rules that all nuclear nations follow:
1. All lie about their nuclear weapons policies.
2. All declare as policy that they will not be the first to use nuclear weapons.
The reality is that all nuclear powers, including us, have a “use them or lose them” strategy. No nation is going to wait around to be attacked and have part or all of their deterrent destroyed. If they feel an attack is imminent, they will strike first. That’s called the real world, Diane. You can come visit us here anytime.
AP via the Boston Globe has LIEberman whining that Ned’s going on-air with a LARGE media buy; but Ned says ‘There’s no whining in politics (esp. if you’re the incumbent with a record…um, remember, Joe how you went after Weicker?’) OK, I added that part, but…

…”"If he thinks complaining about the fact that we’re talking about his record is negative, I’d say he’s wrong — you’ve got to stand up for your record,” Lamont said.”…

I thot I was the specialist at sitting around and moping and thinking about all of the goals that I haven’t accomplished :)
Well done, good and faithful servant. You have prepared many years for just such a moment, a beam of pure light into the public mind. You and Glenn are powerful beyond your modest disclaimers. Perhaps it is because you are humble, yet boldly speaking the truth, that you are so effective.
I predict Washington Journal will call you often in the future. Shopping opportunity!
New thread
I had a glimpse into your coffee blergh moments at 7am while trying to liveblog before having even one cup of coffee. At one point I found myself staring at the keyboard and thinking, WHAT? Am I supposed to be producing something here? Yet apparently there was value in forging ahead despite brain fog. We live to serve.
Contributions to Colleen Rowley and Jerry McNerney, because it’s never over until it’s over and the fat lady’s sung Happy Birthday.
I’d rather give to winners in a losing cause than to losers in a winning cause.
From Crooks and Liars
Happy Birthday, Christy. I contributed to Diane Benson.

Actually, I am giving now to the bunch that the DCCC did not drop the 12 million to… hoping that soon they will consider the next level of possible candidates by keep them going until then.
Thanks so much to everyone. And egregious, a truly do appreciate you live-blogging this morning for all those folks who needed it. You are a peach. I owe you an ice cream!
katymine @ 4:22pm (#51)
Good idea. I notice that Harry Reid’s in some sort of snit because Sen’s Kerry and Bayh haven’t thrown enough into the DSCC kitty. As far as I’m concerned, more power to them for not wanting to flush that money down the toidy. Kerry, at least, has been raising money for lots of candidates, including some whom the D?CC deem unworthy.

Christy, I swore off support for Democratic pols ten years ago in Oregon…..standing in the choking dust of Clinton’s clearcuts.
Just another region sacrificed for Billary/Gore triangulation.
I’d still like to see Billary/Gore choking* on the dust in the moonscapes they chose to create throughout the nation’s forests.
For the past decade, my “political” donations have gone to direct action enviros. I’d rather fund climbers’ rope than consultants’ lunches.
Thanks to you Christy, Jane, Howie, and all the people at FDL who’ve helped me find Dems – and a political process – I can be proud to support.
Happy Birthday Christy and Siun -
Thanks for giving me a reason to give $100 (and 10% tip) to these worthy Dems.
I thought I’d never donate outside the Green Party again. Thanks for giving me a reason to change.
(*but not enough to endanger life or health – just enough so they can all stand there gasping for breath – like the ecosystems Billary/Gore chose to sacrifice on the triangulation altar.)
Oops.
Now I know I should’ve checked here first!
I spent my fortune on six candidates in NY and OH that were down in the polls within the margin of error – all through ActBlue – but I didn’t use any of the fundraising pages.
And a double sawbuck to ActBlue for carrying the load so far, for so long!

Happy birthday ladies!
I grew up in the San Joaquin Valley, and tho’ I don’t live there anymore, I just sent Jerry McInerney $50 yesterday. This is the first time I’ve been early for anything in years!
Late to thread, but a $50 to Act Blue Pac for Christy and Siun’s b-days and the birthday of a new American political landscape coming soon.
