Defense maybe; a spot on the Supreme Court I find highly dubious. It’s a hugely emotional topic for Bush Republicans and Lieberman just wouldn’t be far-right enough for them.

No, I think Lieberman is obsessed with his sense of entitlement and the trappings of power–look how angry and petulant he is at having to run this race. It’s shocking, but perhaps even more shocking is that he has so little self-control that he can’t hide it.

I think Lieberman’s wet dream is to be the swing vote in a tied Senate, and have R’s and D’s beg him for his support. His ego is that naked.

I have to agree with this totally. I can’t imagine Bush appointing a lifelong Democrat like Lieberman to the S.Ct.! The Reich Wing of his own party would howl for blood.

You saw what they did to Harriet Myers and she was a Bush loyalist. Joe isn’t even a judge! Under NO circumstances can Bush afford after losing the election to totally alienate the Republican base in a matter so close to their foul little hearts.

They expect a lay-down-and-die in the last ditch right-winger. Joe would be vastly too liberal for them.

But that only leaves Defense. How stupid do these Rumor-mongers think Lieberman is? Why would he leave the Senate — where he would have a secure seat for the next 6 years, to take up the captaincy of the Titanic? Preside over the disaster of Iraq after Rumsfeld is forced out? Who wants that job?

And of course Joe would only be in the job for two thankless years before he’d be out with Bush. What kind of future would he have then?

If the Democrats take the White House in 2008 he’d be toast, and even if McCain wins, there’s no guarantee he’d find room in the cabinet for Lieberman!

Lieberman was on the short list for Sec. of Defense, but nobody knows if he’d take it or even if anyone can convince Bush to sack Rumsfeld. Bush is into uber-loyalists, and Rumsfeld strokes him like a cat licking its paws.

Why wouldn’t Lieberman caucus with Democrats? What’s the downside for him? He gets his old committee seats, he gets to give the finger to anyone who opposed him. He gets to go on doing what he feels entitled to do since 1998 — be a thorn in the side of every Democrat.

He’s an independent now and can do what he likes. There has to be a certain appeal for him to see Andy Reid and Co. grovel and eat his shit 24/7. If they say or do anything he doesn’t like he can just give them a dirty look and they’ll tremble lest he switch over to the Republicans.

It’s much better to be in a position where BOTH sides have to kiss his ass, than to be in one where one side hates him and is free to rip him without mercy.

More than anything that is why Rove is supporting him. To screw up the Democrats and take all the air out of their sails even if they win. I refuse to believe Lieberman is stupid enough to take a job with the S.S. Bush, right at the point the ship is starting to sink by the bow!

OT and tinfoil hat time:

If a web site is threatening bad things security-wise, at what point will DHS shut down the Internet for “homeland security” reasons? (I know that there have been rumblings about this the past few days.)

Now, as a logical business owner, I can say that they won’t because the genie is out of the bottle and U.S. businesses RELY on the internet to conduct everyday business. So shutting it down would have real economic impact.

But…just wondering if we should create some old-fashioned telephone trees, just in case?

I hate it when I’m contemplating the view from conspiracy corner.

I previously posted about the excellent article, The Israel Lobby, by John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt published in the London Review of Books.

Would some of you brilliant people please read this and respond from the point of view of Lieberman’s strategic position in the Senate vis a vis the Israel Lobby? I think the Israel lobby is much more aligned with the Republican view of the middle east.
