Okay Chris Shays has lost his mind, that's a given. First he launched a bizarre attack on Ted Kennedy before going on to liken the torture at Abu Ghraib to a weekend at Plato's Retreat, and now as a Republican congressman up for re-election in the state of Connecticut he says that Lieberman is a "national treasure" and that Joe's victory is more important than his own.
The GOP seems to be in the midst of a meltdown that Shays typifies -- they've lost their bearings, they have completely unrealistic assessments of the situation they face, and they can't play defense. They just keep stumbling around like a pack of drunken frat boys who can't find their car keys, saying weird and irrational things.
But the one thing that seems to unite them all: they place a curious hope in the future of Joe Lieberman.
As Colin McEnroe says, during Monday's debate Lieberman betrayed his feelings of entitlement to anything he wants from the GOP:
Lieberman unintentionally disclosed another thing he believes: that the fix is in and that he doesn't have to worry about Republican opposition. He actually said it! He said he wasn't expecting an attack from the Republican side! Remember, he got a phone call from Karl Rove right after the primary. From that day until this, his campaign has been oozing Republican gravy. He gets their money, and he gets their tactical support. The only thing they have not been able to do for Joe Lieberman is find the "off" switch on Alan Schlesinger.
I was at dinner last night and I heard a rumor I've heard several times recently, and is just a rumor but it goes something like this. Following his primary loss in Connecticut to Ned Lamont, Lieberman was so humiliated that he was willing to do anything to save face. He knew his only chance to win was to lock down everything on the Republican side of the aisle, and so he made a deal with Rove and the GOP -- they would support him in any way possible, giving him money, advice, Dick Cheney stumping for him, and keeping Alan Schlessinger in the race as the Republican candidate even as they refused to endorse or support him.
In return (and I've heard different versions of this) Lieberman is given either the Secretary of Defense post (this is the Alterman theory) or a Supreme Court seat. Since GOP governor Jodi Rell is well ahead in the polls and will likely win re-election, this means that the task of appointing a replacement will fall to her and the seat will go to a Republican. Lieberman doesn't even have to switch parties and caucus with the GOP. In a close Senate battle it could easily be the move that takes control of the Senate out of the hands of the Democrats.
Lieberman has obviously reached some sort of agreement with Rove and the Republicans for their support in the state. Why aren't the press looking into the details of that deal? Enquiring minds want to know what he has promised in return. There is no free ride with the GOP.
I have no idea if the rumor is true or not. All I can say is that I believe with some confidence that Lieberman will keep running his mouth and talking trash about Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and other Democratic leaders he seems to have absolutely no fear of facing again in Washington DC. And that they, as they have done before, will accept this bitchslapping from No Show Joe with a smile, clinging to the hope that he will caucus with the Dems if he wins in November.
Looks like the GOP isn't the only party full of Peter Pans.

If there was a deal, Alan clearly has not signed on.
Joe Lieberman, your time is up.
Wow Jane.
That rumor sure makes a lot of sense.
Unfortunately for the GOP, it may come down to the Idaho Governor’s race, (about which I can find no polling data). Even RedState has picked up the rumors about Larry Craig. The General has been all over this.
Holy Joe goes to Sec. of Defense or the Supremes, and Rell appoints the draft dodging killer, shays to the senate.
Unfortunately, makes prefect sense. Truly Rovian.
I put a Schleslinger sticker on my car today. He’s a better campaigner than Lamont.
er
WHY is Joe so important to the REPUBS?
What purpose does he serve? What does he know and when did he know it?
am i the only one suffering from the combination of an overactive imagination and no information from the ct-sen debate happening right now?
OT, but it would’ve been epu’ed:
The previous thread led me on a journey to something I’ve been wanting to bring up since the Page committee started meeting, when there were rumors about other potential dalliances, even of females, about to come out. I thought it might have been our old friend Helen Chenoweth, Idaho R. representative who was the female version of an old horn dog. Chenoweth’s hypocrisy drew a lot of attention during the Lewinsky scandal. Poor Helen died recently but that won’t keep me from reprinting this from a ‘98 Salon article:
“As one GOP political operative in northern Idaho once told a reporter in an unguarded moment: “Helen is living proof that you can fuck your brains out.” (Chenoweth is widely considered, in Idaho parlance, dumb as a mud fence.)”
Technical question:
Can Lieberman “officially” be thrown out of the Democratic party? Or, would a better strategy for Democratic leaders be to completely ostracize the motherfucker (of course, this assumes that they have the cojones to actually do it)?
You gotta love Alan, he is totally pissed off and a standard bearer for all those who feel betrayed by their party. The Red Staters may not be honest and/or wise enough to realize they’re being punked, but Alan does.
He just may be able to rally disaffected Joe Sixpacks who like their online porn and blackjack and don’t want to hear Whinerman being his churlish, sex-scold self. I mean, at this point, what has Alan got to lose? The floor is his.
Selise at #6,

I’m suffering too and glad you brought this up. What’s the drill on the debate today - live audience - media must be there, no? Do we even know if HoJo showed up?
Mr. Lieberman won’t be smiling soon. But he will be cleaning out his desk.
Senator Lamont will be grinning ear to ear. And so will I.
OMG I’m in moderation.
I’ve been reading the Joe statements, and one thing keeps occurring to me: AD! Sure, it’s probably “early onset” but just you wait, if he is elected, he won’t start talking more sense than he does now…Less! Much less. Remember when Ronnie Reagan was so bad while still President that Nancy had to almost shout what he was suppose to say next? Yeah, Joe early onset… And, we thought Ronnie The President’s problem was his hearing being bad. Duh!
LIEberman has supported the the rethugs when it counted since before the coup. They expect him to keep doing what he has been doing since 98.
Defense maybe; a spot on the Supreme Court I find highly dubious. It’s a hugely emotional topic for Bush Republicans and Lieberman just wouldn’t be far-right enough for them.
No, I think Lieberman is obsessed with his sense of entitlement and the trappings of power–look how angry and petulant he is at having to run this race. It’s shocking, but perhaps even more shocking is that he has so little self-control that he can’t hide it.
I think Lieberman’s wet dream is to be the swing vote in a tied Senate, and have R’s and D’s beg him for his support. His ego is that naked.

Many of you are making heroic efforts, but I think it was Christy that pushed me over the line, she has a full plate and yet is volunteering her time. So I must follow her courageous example.

People, if I can do it so can you. This includes running for office by the way. It’s ridiculously easy. Have been thinking about the earlier CHS comments: (1) “Heck, even I could do better than this bozo.” (2) “Dear God please send us a candidate better than this bozo.”

Hopefully we’ll have news soon
alan schlesinger is the key to sending joe to the unemployment line where he belongs. now that he’s gotten a little press from the first debate, what are the chances that he can start to mount a real campaign? i know he isn’t getting jack from the gop, but there have to be a few wealthy repubs in ct who want to support and actual republican in the race. every vote he picks up is one less for joe.
Get that rumor out! Write letters to the editor. Talk to your friends. It’s completely ridiculous that Lieberman thinks he can run as a Republican and nobody will notice, not even the ACTUAL REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE.

The Hartford Courant and other media raised a big sh*tstorm about the socalled blackout, and got the CBS affilate to relent a bit. Media are allowed to attend and report, but the local station sponsoring the debate is holding off on broadcasting it until tomorrow. They will, however, make available certain clips (that they select) to other media outlets for the news tonight.
I’d say expect to see stuff at the Courant website about ten minutes after the debate ends.
Debate should be over. Need info……dying here.
happened to me yesterday when Cozumel said he was going to Vegas. I told him to bet red on the ruuuullettttee wheel.
There was never any choice but for Lieberscum to throw in his lot with the Repubs. He knew going into the primary that there were Dems who would only stay with him through the primary, especially the union folk. Afterwards, with no access to official party support from either side, there was no question that he would go for money from the Dark Side. Lieberman’s a whore and always has been. I continue to believe that this is the most important senatorial race out there. It’s a pity more people in CT don’t seem to care about how often Joe has sold them down the river. His “experience” is certainly the kind you wouldn’t wish on anyone you care about.

As Republican as Joe is I don’t see an actual invitation to sit in Rummy’s vacant chair. Unless it’s to serve as a fall guy during the cut and run from Iraq. Neocons would throw a hissy fit of unimaginable proportion before they would give up a seat at the helm of defense, imo. George Bush wouldn’t be able to tolerate his whine for a single minute no matter how wonderful Joe tells Bush he is.
Jane, do your friends think Joe would vote to overturn Roe? Could Bushco convince the theocons of this?
Of course only Joe would believe a hush hush offer of this sort from a pack of Rovian liars.
If there is any truth to this notion I wish someone would ask Joe as Sec Def if he would order/approve torture on Saturdays.

Jane, I think this is a crucial post. Why are you smiling, Joe? — indeed.
Because he knows how the currently constituted Democratic Party works, perhaps? He knows he can do anything now, say anything now, and the Democrats won’t do anything about it. Joe is able to get away with this crap because the Democratic Party is infected with gutless wonders.
Winning this election is just the first step in what we, as regular citizens, have to do to restore the American Idea. In this first step, we knock out the Republican Piratocracy and the Anti-Constitution Radicals.
We wipe the smile off Joe’s face with the second step, where we knock those same elements out of the Democratic Party.
As much as I loathe what the Republican Party has become, I loathe the Democratic Party more. Why? Because I expect the Republican Party to work to plunder our national treasure while institutionalizing privilege over merit. But I expect better from the Democratic Party.
Don’t be bamboozled by our success this cycle into thinking it is the Democratic Party’s success. The Democrats are going to take back congress in November in spite of the Party, not because of it.
And when we band of hooligans finish taking back congress, then we had better affirmatively throw those DLC bums (and we know who they are) out of the inner Democratic Party circle who are there to serve themselves, democracy be damned.
It will be easier than we have dared to believe. In fact, it’s already happening. The money is shifting, coming out of the hands of the DLC and into the direct funding, pass-through mechanisms like that of ActBlue.
Why is Joe smiling? Because he thinks he is going to get his, no matter what. Maybe he will. Maybe he will be the last well-known beneficiary of the dysfunction in the Democratic Party. Somehow, though, I think Joe’s sell-out to the Bushies will do him about as much good as John McCain’s did him.
Either way, the smile is at the sad, sad end of Joe’s story. He just doesn’t know it yet.

Lieberman wouldn’t want to give up his Senate seat to be Secretary of Defense for two years. Would you give up a six year Senate seat for two years as Secretary of Defense?
Regarding the Supreme Court, right-wingers though Harriet Miers was too far to the left. They wouldn’t accept an appointment of Lieberman to the Supreme Court.

To me, those parts of the rumor only make sense if he lost the seat. If he won, he could do much less work for the same money as a Senator than at either of those other positions.
Of course, if he lost, no one would offer him those positions anyway.
Looks like Joe is sort of telling us how he’s holding the Dems hostage. From a Salon article that someone here posted earlier:
I still think that part of the equation we are seeing is AIPAC. This group has entirely too much influence over our national policy, and is somehow involved in the Franklin-Feith mess.
The same constituency influences other folks like Rahm Emmanuel (who is hoping to stack the House with a pro-war Dem bench), and could be influencing HRC on her donations (they maybe threatening to yank support in 2008 if she steps into the Lamont-Lieberman mix).
If Joe became SecDef, they’d have everything they wanted, an easily manipulated fool who’d scold Congress if they interfered with DoD under his command.
Makes perfect sense. And it also makes it all the more critical that Joe is removed from office, period. No more public office EVER.
Can’t imagine joe (or anyone) wanting the secy of defense position for the last two lame duck years of this misadministration. Might as well rent a seat in hell.

Had a good thought this morning while walking the hills of SW Portland, OR:
The GOP has branded themselves the ‘testoserone’ political choice.
But lately they’ve really been acting less than manly. Used to be when they got caught, the response was, “Oh yeah? Prove it.” Not any more. There’s girlish whining coming from these frat boys and its really pathetic. A lot a risk-taking has gone wrong for the repubs and nobody has got the stones to say, “I fucked up. Now I’ll take my lumps.” When I make a bad decision, I stand up like a man and take responsibility. I don’t see a whole lot of winger masculine dignity on display. There’s a lot of pussyass, byatch finger pointing happening in the GOP these days and I think its very unattractive to the NASCAR/WWF crowd.
Just a thought. Use it as necessary.

Distract from the coming Craig resignation
Lieberman reminds me of little as much as the rant John Kavanaugh (Forest Whitaker) unleashes in The Shield at the cops and politicians who won’t help him bust Vic Mackey (Michael Chiklis) for his crimes (not that I’m sure which side I come down on for that particular philosophical debate), which ends with Whitaker yelling, “He pisses on us, and we just smile? … He’s pissing on us… He’s piss… How does it taste? Huh? Because to me, it tastes like piss!”
Harry, Chuck: that ain’t apple juice in your glass. Not when it’s served up by Joe Lieberman.
Maybe Joe is being set up by the republicans so Schleslinger can slip by to a win with a divided democrat base. If any of the Bush team campaigned for a candidate in Conn., it would be the kiss of death. But if they can string Joe along, perhaps they think they can sneak one by everyone.
OT and tinfoil hat time:
If a web site is threatening bad things security-wise, at what point will DHS shut down the Internet for “homeland security” reasons? (I know that there have been rumblings about this the past few days.)
Now, as a logical business owner, I can say that they won’t because the genie is out of the bottle and U.S. businesses RELY on the internet to conduct everyday business. So shutting it down would have real economic impact.
But…just wondering if we should create some old-fashioned telephone trees, just in case?
I hate it when I’m contemplating the view from conspiracy corner.
Even Bolton Joe thinks that darkblack’s caricatures are really funny!
jane hamsher @ 9
I think it was big of Ned to give Schles a few encouraging words at the end of the last debate. Anybody make any phone calls to Derby lately to assess the Schless base? It would be interesting to know how the hometown feels about Lieberman stealing Alan’s Republican nominee status.
Why the DSCC is not supporting Lamont is beyond me. Lieberman is going to screw with them if he wins in a variety of ways. I have refused to give any more money to the DSCC and I’ve told them exactly why: Lieberman is all about him and has no loyalty to anything except his oh-so-entitled sense of self. It’s also so fabulous to bypass the DSCC and give straight to the candidates who need it!
Even if Joe loses, he has value to Bush as a (faux) symbol of bipartisanship. If this rumor pans out, wait for Dubya to approach the podium with Joe alongside, when he’ll utter these words: “Listen, I care about reaching out to Democrats, so I’ve decided to appoint my good friend Joe Lieberman to be . . .” (Then watch Joe bask in the “my President called, and who am I to decline?” stroke to his ego.)
That’s been Joe’s value for the last six years, and even a loss to Ned in three weeks won’t hurt that too much. The people who believe Joe’s a bipartisan, reach-across-the-aisle, middle of the road Democrat will continue to fall for it, and that’s all that matters to Bush.
In fact, if the Dems take control of the House and/or Senate, Bush will be under serious pressure to make it at least appear that he’s a bipartisan kind of guy. This would let him try to cast all the hearings and investigations as “evil partisan politics.” Appointing Joe to something would give him a fig leaf just when he will need one most.
Appearances are so much more important than reality in the Bush White House, and if someone’s going to say the emperor has no clothes, he’s going to want to have a fig leaf close by.

Did Pat Robertson Smite Bob Corker?
If further evidence were needed of Harold Ford, Jr.’s momentum in Tennessee–and why Republicans face problems motivating voters on election day–religious-minded TV junkies (and plain, old inveterate cable surfers) caught it last night on the Christian Broadcasting Networks 700 Club, which featured an illuminating report from Tennessee that captured Bob Corkers woes as well as anything.
CBN correspondent David Brody interviewed both candidates with an eye toward examining how religion shapes their politics. Noting that Ford wears his on his sleeve (he shot a commercial in his church), Brody concludes of Ford that, “He’s hip, young, articulate, and talking about Jesus.” Ford even has the presence of mind to slip in a bemused dismissal of Corkers charge that he is “too religious.”

Because the media is run by central bankers and defense contractors who support Lieberman.
It may simply be that he will switch parties if he wins. SecDef is not a job any sane person would want, and Bush may not have any more court appointments in two years.
Highly unlikely that Clinton stumped for Lieberman without a firm D-commitment.

I have to agree with this totally. I can’t imagine Bush appointing a lifelong Democrat like Lieberman to the S.Ct.! The Reich Wing of his own party would howl for blood.
You saw what they did to Harriet Myers and she was a Bush loyalist. Joe isn’t even a judge! Under NO circumstances can Bush afford after losing the election to totally alienate the Republican base in a matter so close to their foul little hearts.
They expect a lay-down-and-die in the last ditch right-winger. Joe would be vastly too liberal for them.
But that only leaves Defense. How stupid do these Rumor-mongers think Lieberman is? Why would he leave the Senate — where he would have a secure seat for the next 6 years, to take up the captaincy of the Titanic? Preside over the disaster of Iraq after Rumsfeld is forced out? Who wants that job?
And of course Joe would only be in the job for two thankless years before he’d be out with Bush. What kind of future would he have then?
If the Democrats take the White House in 2008 he’d be toast, and even if McCain wins, there’s no guarantee he’d find room in the cabinet for Lieberman!
Lieberman was on the short list for Sec. of Defense, but nobody knows if he’d take it or even if anyone can convince Bush to sack Rumsfeld. Bush is into uber-loyalists, and Rumsfeld strokes him like a cat licking its paws.
Why wouldn’t Lieberman caucus with Democrats? What’s the downside for him? He gets his old committee seats, he gets to give the finger to anyone who opposed him. He gets to go on doing what he feels entitled to do since 1998 — be a thorn in the side of every Democrat.
He’s an independent now and can do what he likes. There has to be a certain appeal for him to see Andy Reid and Co. grovel and eat his shit 24/7. If they say or do anything he doesn’t like he can just give them a dirty look and they’ll tremble lest he switch over to the Republicans.
It’s much better to be in a position where BOTH sides have to kiss his ass, than to be in one where one side hates him and is free to rip him without mercy.
More than anything that is why Rove is supporting him. To screw up the Democrats and take all the air out of their sails even if they win. I refuse to believe Lieberman is stupid enough to take a job with the S.S. Bush, right at the point the ship is starting to sink by the bow!
