Still no debate for Robert Rodriguez and Howard "Cluck" McKeon in the CA-25. But we did get some footage of the encouragement that McKeon has been given by a certain Rodriguez supporter that doesn't lay an egg. (So to speak…I feel so punaise.)
Thought everyone would appreciate starting the day with a bit of a giggle. As TRex says, "every party needs a chicken."
Another of our Blue America candidates, Victoria Wulsin who is running against Mean Jean Schmidt in the OH-2, got some great press coverage the other night on the evening news on WKRC…for a certain YouTube advertisement that Howie and TommyYum and all the rest of us helped get online. This is something that you guys did — so give yourself a huge pat on the back, each and every one of you. (You can watch video of the newscast here, but you have to forward through the first part of the broadcast — the Wulsin piece comes on right after the penguin commercial.)
You helped Rick Penberthy — running for the FL-5 — to buy just over 10,000 postcards to mail out across his district. It was a huge boost to his campaign — and you deserve some serious thanks for that!
There are so many more examples — too many to list individually — but every little bit that everyone has done is so helpful.
Howie Klein has done a phenomenal job with Blue America from its inception, and deserves an enormous round of applause for the huge amount of time that it takes for him to vet our candidates, do the interviews, and set up our schedule of chats.
But look at the payoff: our Blue America candidates are doing a fantastic job of taking back America, all the while promoting progressive values and standing up for the best that this nation can be. Just take a peek at the names on the Blue America list — how little chance some of them were given at the start of this campaign season — and how far all of them have been able to go, with a little bit of support and seed money from all of you.
A lot of these candidates were not getting support from the typical Democratic establishment — but they did get a hand from you, and look where that has taken them now! Bravo — to the candidates, and to every single one of our readers.
Each week — on Wednesdays and Saturdays — so many of our readers show up to chat with these candidates, and to give them support, through both encouragement and financial contributions. I can't tell you how much that has meant to each and every candidate we have featured — and to all of us at FDL. We get appreciative notes from the campaigns for your involvement, so consider this your note from all of them as well. Thank you, more than any of you can ever know, for helping us, for helping Blue America, and for helping our nation.
Please, give yourselves a hand this morning. Well done! Whatever gets tallied up as a win in the Democratic column in November, you can say to yourself that you had a part in it — it is because of all of your work that any of this is possible. So, thank you. Now get up, get out there, and get out the vote!

Ta to you Christy! You’re one in a million!
Good morning Christy and all. A grey day here in Cheese-land, but I’m growing cautiously optimistic about the election.
Investigations with supoena power, and lots of them!!!!

Nice NYTimes puff piece on Jeff Trandahl. IMHO, it was designed to inoculate him against the anticipated sliming from Hastert’s office.
Christy,
Thanks for the thanks. We never do enough of that.
Christy, did you get scarecrow’s e-mail? What would you like us to do regarding same?

Morning all– Just finished reading the Stamford Advocate and found this:
http://www.stamfordadvocate.co…..-headlines
Lots of Lamont supporting LTE’s in the paper too!
You can watch the Tom and Rahm show on cspan today at 1pm when they appear at the National Press Club.
Maybe someone will ask Tom about his penchant for all of this trash and Foley, too.
G’mornin’ all,
Nice mornng post, Christy. I like good news to start the day.
As I scan the headlines, it’s clear the GOP is in a panic, pullling morey from races where their candidate is clearly a goner to help shore up races that haven’t been lost…yet. Meanwhile, Progressive/Democratic individuals (and to a certain extent, the party-thank you, Howard Dean) are pouring money and time into races across the country where victory seems even remotely possible.
Don’t know how many people have seen this, but it looks as if Ohio has had enough. Polls these days are encouraging.

love that chicken!
Morning, FirePups! Busy day here, don’t know if I’ll be around much.
OT – I wanted to share something that another Dem sent me this morning, about the black ops torture flights:
Village Voice > News > Planespotting by Trevor Paglen & A. C. Thompson
Tarnishes Wayne Madsen’s tinfoil. [sigh]
We have so much work to do ahead of us, like undoing S. 3930, undoing whatever black ops are going on, along with returning Fairness Doctrine in media and modifying ownership regulations, restoring OSHA, FEMA, EPA, NIH-CDC, NASA, so on and so on. It’s demanding, but we must be thinking of these things even as we work on getting our candidates elected.
In fact, if you are a Democratic Party member, you should be checking into your local party’s operations. Some local parties have elections of officers for the next 2 years within 30 days of Election Day; if your local party isn’t operating up to snuff, it is imperative that we work on developing slates to replace the current officers.
Again, more demanding work when we are busy getting progressives elected, but we have to be able to chew gum and walk at the same time if we’re going to be charged with the recovery of this nation. I’ve got conplete faith in the abilities of any crowd that can do what it’s done for Blue America candidates.
A mighty fine editorial from the Wapo…

Morning all,
Just watched the Lamont-Schlesinger-Lieberman debate via CTblog (why am I doing this when I’m not even a citizen??? And when it’s bedtime here!). Couldn’t help but be struck by Lieberman’s desperation to be “bipartisan”. Sorry, Joe, but it takes two parties to bipartisanate, and the Republicans ain’t interested.

Does Howie Kurtz lurk here? Seems like his opening line today might be aimed at someone near and dear to folks at the ‘Lake:
Hmmm . . .
Diehard? Check.
Left-wing? Check?
Hollywood? Check (in a cultural if not geographical way).
Screenwriter? Check.
Now if Howie had mentioned great hair, fabulous friends, and a passion for accountability to the constitution, we’d know for sure who he was talking about.
And that snark-filled list? Priceless.
What a gawdawful mess to clean up in the coming decades. Right now, it feels as if the ship of state is shuddering like it is right on the edge of breaking the sound barrier, or of the final scenes in 2001. I keep looking for a meme to encapsulate the efforts ahead, and the one that keeps coming back around is rebuilding the Commonwealth

What I really want to see is the enormous money taken out of politics altogether… it’s the only way to restore any fairness and to make sure the best, brightest, most capable and impassioned candidates are able to compete and win elections.

CHS, this ActBlue campaign has been the best thing. (I tried to add details to that, and finally figured to keep it simple.)
Thank you Jane and CHS and Howie and the rest of the FDL team for helping us keep our sanity and hopes during this horrible repubican regime.
The Republicans are advertising like crazy during the morning news lately. The most commercials are for US House District 1 (Nussle’s former district) where the heir apparent Whelen (sp??) is seriously badmouthing Braley. Yet, for every 10 Whelen commercials there may be 4 for Braley, or so it seems. The same can be said for the Governor’s race.
One doesn’t hear many commercials for US District 2 either. They did have a ‘debate’ this past Monday and was televised live on a local station. They both sounded darn near the same. So, it appears that there won’t be a whole lot of change happening from either one. About the biggest difference was that Leech is willing to entertain the idea of limited privatization of SS. I have a feeling that Leech will win because of name recognition.
The presidential races have started to work into the schedule. Kerry was here this week, yesterday I think. Bill Clinton was in Des Moines late last week. Others have been here lately. I’m sure more will be showing up in the next couple of weeks, then cool down for a couple of months and then start warming up again.
RevDeb @ 22
sadly, i think it’s the other way around. we’re the one’s playing catch up…just think what howie and christy and jane could do with rahm’s money!
but it’s ok, ‘cuz howie and christy and jane have given us a way to be in the game… and together influence the outcome…
rahm’s got his own list and there’s not a lot of overlap with howie’s list.
and i like howie’s better.

The coffee with the Taliban strategery is popping up in races all over the country. They’ve used it against Wetterling, too… latest polls show her up several points. How’s that workin’ out for ya, KKKKarl?
In the last thread I commented on Huckabee on Imus this morning and Rayne replied a cautionary note. Just so there’s no doubt, I harbor absolutely no illusions of hopefulness from ANY Republican candidate. They stood by and allowed the dark forces to take over their party and wreak havoc on every facet of our country.
It will take a strong Democratic commitment to restoring our Constitutional safeguards and a strong commitment to the values of the Founders to restore some semblance of integrity to this country within and across the globe. And it’s we netroots and grassroots who must hold them accountable to get it done.
Right now, the only Democratic leaders I see viable for ‘08 are Clark and Edwards. Another may emerge, but they’re my guys. For competence, the values they hold, and their experience in the fray of Washington.

HOUSE BELLWETHER? [Kate O’Beirne]
A well-connected Republican source who was running through the most competitive House races this morning said, “If we lose Heather Wilson, we lose the House.” The explanation was that Wilson has faced tough reelection races in the past and so knows what she’s up against. She’s aggressive, knows how to fight for her seat, and raises plenty of money. The reasoning is that if she is knocked off this year, there is little hope for incumbents facing their first real challenge. At the end of September, polls had Wilson tied with New Mexico’s attorney general Patricia Madrid. Recent polls give Madrid an edge of about 8 points.

You want to sweat something in the comments, that’s one thing.
You want to sweat something in a post, that’s a whole lot worse. You can bring it to the poster’s attention in a helpful way without drawing a lot of attention to yourself or the error.
Since you’ve got so much extra time and energy, why don’t you consider investing it in some GOTV efforts. Since we just lost “the writ,” (of habeus corpus) yesterday, nobody here is too concerned about an extra

There is a very scary diary up at Kos indicating that the Republicans have orchestrated voter purges in four critical states including Ohio, which will not be noticed by victimized voters until the election, at which point they will be denied the right to vote. The diary is being treated somewhat skeptically by commenters, but if it is confirmed it would be an absolute bombshell and something we would need to fight tooth and nail. Here’s a link:

angie @ 24
Speaker Pelosi (get used to it) favors public financing of elections. (said on one of th Sunday talking head shows, so no linky).
Alan Schlesinger was on our local classic rock station, WPLR, this morning getting some free radio attention. The morning hosts are notorious supporters of Lieberman and Bush, and yet they were utterly effusive with Schlesinger.
They asked him if there were any new polls out yet based on his performance at the debate and Schlesinger said the only one so far which was an online poll at WTIC TV. Of course, the usual cavaets were given about online polls, but I can’t imagine who would have inflated these numbers and for what reason. Apparently, after viewing the debate 54% said that they might change their vote to Schlesinger. Holy crap! Even if that poll is even a four-fold exaggeration, Schlesinger just might snatch those Republican voters away from Lieberman after all.
Meanwhile, the Hartford Courant decided to do a follow-up on Lieberman’s Social Security record and also covers the I was against Bolton before I was for Bolton issue.
Read the whole thing. It’s great.

Thanks MayDaze. That’s gotta be at the absolute top of the legislative list along with impeachment, ending the Occupation of Iraq, repealing the Military Commissions Act and some others.
As long as Ney and others keep pleading guilty, maybe there will be enough Republicans to join to override a Presidential veto. Hope springs eternal.
It was a fun session the other night in Trex’s inaugural USO Virtual Tour with staffers (and the candidate, briefly) from the Rodriguez campaign. They have a great cameraderie while pursuing a very serious goal. Since we can’t wave a wand and get all campaign staffers paid more, at least we can show our appreciation for their efforts.

I suggest we need to add something about level of maturity or mental age, too. There are entirely too many adolescents

Fresh thread, gang.
I know I sound (read?) like a broken record (my eight year-old asks, daddy, what’s a record?) but…anybody here ever been in the control room of a newscast? There are no minds thinking through the impact of ideas, the articulation of clear thinking, the quality of presentation. The director and producer and the corporate bozos who hold the keys are concerned with technical smoothness, looks of the host, pithy sound-bite-type commentators, what audience the guests bring to the broadcast, and if the subject is punchy. They will go with entertaining pseudo-conflict every time, as speeches scare them. People might turn the channel. Advertisers might get bumped. They hate speeches and reluctantly broadcast even the SOTU speech. No, the news is that Clinton gave a speech. Now we turn to a quick word from some know-it-all about the speech or about Clinton, and then four commercials.
Oh, I do go on. Sorry. Lost in the end of a thread anyway.
Hey marksb–how are you doing?

Oh, and I can’t run for three or four months. That sucks. In fact, the whole thing sucks. But, hey, the docs use the word “cure” multiple times in a conversation, and the care I’m getting is top-drawer (these guys are thrilled at my state of health and fitness), and I’ve got health insurance, so, all in all, it would seem I’m damned lucky.
