Here's the Sunday Talking Head line-up for the morning shows. Read it and weep -- or in a couple of cases, rejoice (see if you can pick those out...):
• "Meet the Press" (NBC) Guests: U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton; Republican Rep. Mark Kennedy and Democrat Amy Klobuchar, Minnesota candidates for U.S. Senate.
• "This Week" (ABC) Guests: U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton; Democratic Rep. Harold Ford Jr. and Republican Bob Corker, Tennessee candidates for U.S. Senate; actress and voting activist Marg Helgenberger.
• "Face the Nation" (CBS) Guests: Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice; Sen. John Warner, R-Va.; former Sen. Sam Nunn, co-chairman of the Nuclear Threat Initiative.
• "CNN Late Edition" Guests: U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton; Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean and Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman; Sens. Carl Levin, D-Mich., and Chuck Hagel, R-Neb.
• "Fox News Sunday" Guests: Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice; Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass.
• "C-Span Washington Journal" Guests: 7:30am - Jennifer Duffy, Editor, & Amy Walter, Sr. Editor, Cook Poltical Report; 9am - Nancy Yousseff, McClatchy Newspapers, Baghdad Bureau Chief; 9:30am - Lt. Cmdr. Charles Swift (USN), Defense Dept. Office of Military Commissions, Judge Advocate General.
For once, I'm excited about the "celebrity" booking on This Week -- because Marg Helgenberger is one of the actresses featured in the Women's Voices, Women Vote campaign that I spotlighted earlier this week, and I am very excited that it is getting a wider circulation among the talking head set today. The group is a fantastic organization, and I could not be happier that they are getting some much deserved recognition.
When you add that into the C-Span Washington Journal line-up this morning -- folks from the Cook Report doing the latest campaign number crunching breakdown, Nancy Youseff from the Baghdad bureau of McClatchy Newspapers (who have been doing amazing reporting from the region) and Lt. Cmdr. Charles Swift -- well, that just brings a big ole smile to my face.
So you'll pardon me if I decide to give Captain Mustache a miss, along with his sidekick Ferragamo Gurrrrl. I'm not certain there are enough antiacids in the entire world for that this morning, although for news watching sake, I should probably subject myself to it anyway.
The lovely bird above is a newly discovered species from a cloud forest in Colombia that has been named a Yariguies brush-finch. According to the AP (via NYTimes):
The bright yellow and red-crowned Yariguies brush-finch was named for the indigenous tribe that once inhabited the mountainous area where it was discovered. For conservationists the discovery of the species came at a crucial time -- the government has decided to set aside 500 acres of the pristine cloud forest where the bird lives to create a national park.
"The bird was discovered in what is the last remnants of cloud forest in that region," Camila Gomez, of the Colombia conservation group ProAves, said on Monday. "There are still lots of undiscovered flora and fauna species that live in the area."
The small bird can be distinguished from its closest relative -- the yellow-breasted brush finch -- by its solid black back and the lack of white marks on its wings.
"There are about two to three new birds found in the world every year," Thomas Donegan, the British half of an Anglo-Colombian research duo who discovered the bird in January 2004, told The Associated Press on Monday. "It's a very rare event."
There is much more information in the article, but suffice it to say, just getting a glimpse of this little fellow is an event. I thought you'd all enjoy sharing this little wonder this morning.
(H/T to reader "DM" for the link to the Colombia story. What a treat.)

Fitzy Boids!
Morning
Post could be formatted in a more readable way
Somethin not right with look/format of post Redd
EPU’d, so partly reposting this, because every day should be get out the vote day between now and Nov. 7.
And because I am on the Connecticut border in a motel for a conference, about to spend the day in NW Connecticut to see the autumn leaves (and peek at some Ned Lamont signs while we are at it).
Back in my Republican years (they were 38 years ago, so don’t worry) I sat in a campaign headquarters across the street from a poll location in New Haven, Connecticut, and watched in envy as the Democrats and unions drove car after car to the polling station with old people, handicapped people, people who didn’t have transportation. Those Democrats really know how to get out the vote, I said to my colleague.
Now the worm has turned. The R’s got it down pat, and the D’s are playing catchup.
Read this article Associated Press from yesterday, Dems Facing Proven GOP Turnout Machine , and start out depressed.
But by the time you get to the end, you’ll start believing we have hope this year. Then get out and make it happen. Get Out The Vote.
Prof - can’t be said enough - I am GOTV there, was there all day yesterday, won’t stop
Sorry about the html issue gang — I accidentally hit something when I put this together and didn’t realize it. Took me a while to figure out what was making the sidebar — oops. It’s better now, so you can refresh your screens for a more easily readable post.
Hey — for everyone that lives in Jack Murtha’s district — we went out for a drive to look at foliage yesterday and drove through part of the district between Mt. Morris, PA and Washington, PA. If you haven’t gotten a Murtha yard sign for your yard, please do — there are way too many Irey signs for my comfort level, and way too few Murtha ones. I know he’s polling really, really well — but yard signs can sometimes make a bug difference in both turning out and suppressing votes, depending on numbers. So please take a little time today and contact the Murtha campaign HQ near you and work out a way to get a sign. Thanks!
Good morning all. There is a big fishing tourny out on the lake this morning. I had about 10 bass fisherman fishing in the hole out by my dock. No fish yet.
Good morning, Firepups. This is a first for me; I’m so motivated to get this done I haven’t had my coffee yet. Trust me that as soon as I click “Submit Comment” I’m going to stagger downstairs and load up the coffee maker to the brim with Folgers.
Just this minute I got our complete Alan Schlesinger interview online. The 24-minute interview is for most people in Connecticut their first view of the candidate, and seeing how the first debate is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon, I worked 7 hours straight editing the thing to get in online at first light today.
Here it is. Some of you may recognize who is doing the interviewing, world-famous Online Journalist Pat Carroll. ;)

OK, off to get some coffee. I’ll be back.
wallace has over 14000 emails (sponsered by think progress) to ask condi why Bush didn’t get retribution for the Cole
he’ll have to ask, but she’ll know about the question and have a very nice prepared answer.
I think we should figure out what her answer is going to be and get ready to saturate the internet and punnsish her answer with the facts
NJ Prog, I left you a message below.
Olbermann!
I’m a little slow this mornin’. Just watched Lester Holt jumping rope. Could be a long strange day.
Life changed for the better when I gave up watching the Sunday talk shows. Blood pressure boiling Sunday morning rage - not such a good thing.
Morning,
Taking the grandkiddos to the Circus at the
Old North Station…
Should I be kind to the elephants?
I have one distressing item … what if the Repugs have already rigged the November elections? (paranoia)
Perish the thought.
Jack
Isn’t John Bolton already in the lame duck days of his illegitamately appointed post?
Jack at 14 — you can only do so much to rig an election if the opposition turns out in overwhelming numbers. It cuts down the possibility substantially. Which is why GOTV is so, so important.
As I understand it, Bolton can in fact be recess-appointed again; but he’d have to work for free, i.e., no public money could be used to pay his salary. Think that he could do it w/donations from Hudson Institute or other wingnut welfare?
dannyM at 15 — yup, unless of course they reappoint him to yet another “lame-ass can’t get through Congress with a crow bar” term.
i’m glad the bird, and the cloud forest could be saved… but i wonder with sadness about the people.
Bay State Librul,
Old North Station? Is that what they call the Garden/Fleet Center/TDBankNorth Garden these days? It’s hard to keep up.
So Bolton will be making the rounds with his brand of unhinged fearmongering re: North Korea. I hope he forgot to take his meds this morning and he further demonstrates to the viewing public just how wise Shrubbies recess appointment was. BTW, aren’t they poised to recess appoint him again? Any news on that front?
The Bay State Librul @
14
I think you are at least wrt it being already accomplished.
AFAIK, this kind of fraud requires precinct level coordination and individual machine level sabotage. In order to do it right, you have to coordinate it with the total number of votes cast in a precinct. That’s unknown until the station closes.
The best insurance imvho against it happening is aggressive monitoring of the polling stations, the machines, and our GOTV efforts.
Connecticut Bob @ 9
wow! major kudos to you, ctbob! can’t wait to watch…
one question though… for such a long interview, could you post an mp3 for downloading? or is that a stupid idea?
CT Bob, I was so happy yesterday when Jane mentioned that you were one in the same with Bob Adams, one of the first FDLers. I hadn’t seen any comments lately from Bob Adams, so I wondered what had happened. Can’t say enough good about your quiet, respectful, but persistent way of holding Joe and his paid hacks accountable.
Love the mohawk on the Yariguies, brings me back to the early 80s.
Lots of yammering this morning by the squirrels in my neighborhood. They are loud, vocal and out in number. Perhaps it’s some kind of protest going on. A little piece of advice, never buy a house in a grove of oak trees. It’s the squirrel’s world and you will always be a visitor.
Way to go CT Bob, I can’t wait to watch it.
Millinaryman at 23 — that sounds awfully fun this morning. :) And it’s true — you are always a guest of the animals whose space you inhabit. And I would not have it any other way.
Morning.
Via Not So Different, here’s Frank Rich of the NYT, on how them homo-sekshuels have infiltrated the party of God.

My, my! Ken Mehlman makes a rare appearance. I’m sure he got to vet all his”questions” to make sure nothing Dupont Circle Related was included.
wow. schlesinger is a scarey guy…. he talks about iran as threat to our survival. i worry about schelsinger and liberman riffing off each other to scare everyone to the point of being unable to thing.
i hadn’t heard schlesinger really lay out his views before… thanks again ctbob!
Shower some creative happiness your way by checking out the colorful site at http://www.planetsark.com I think you folks will love Sark, she is our kind of artist.
Specially recommended by egregious and the married daughter!!
Have a refreshing day full of new and lovely things.

I’m just being snarky here, I do enjoy being their guest, and a meal ticket for that matter. I love placing pistachios around in random spots at random times so while a squirrel is out and about conductiing their business of the day, they could happen upon a treat that they are not familar with since pistachio trees are not native to NJ.

Thanks! And no, it’s not a stupid question at all. It’s just that I don’t know how to do that with my Pinnacle video editing software yet. I know I can IMPORT mp3s into the program, so there might be some way to strip the audio out and save it as an mp3. I’ll look into it.
John Casper @

John, thanks very much. Yeah, yesterday Jane used my “Conservative 10 = Liberal 2″ remark that I was so happy with!
I became “CT Bob” when I started my blog and got so involved in the political process. I wanted some “name brand” blog recognition, not anonymity; I use my real name on my blog profile.
It was a real pleasure talking to an honest, sincere, REAL candidate yesterday. After all my horrific encounters with Lieberman and his phony slick greazy attitude, I was starting to think that Ned was an oddity, and that all other politicians were scum.
Alan renewed my faith somewhat in the process. While I don’t agree with many of his positions on the issues, I certainly respect the man and find him accessable and likeable.
That’s something I’ll never be able to bring myself to say about Joe Lieberman.
Jay @ 20,
Yeah. I can’t keep up with the new names.
To me, it will always be the place Booby Orr
Bill Russell, and the Cooz hung around.

Oh, if you want to see some good Boston views watch “The Departed”….it is also one helluva film.
Speaking of being creative and making things up, is there any proof that the explosion in NK was actually a nuke?
“American intelligence” found radioactivity in the air…(1) sure they did… (2) these agents report to Pres. Cheney or are they for real? (3) would an underground test produce any airborne radioactivity? (4) I thot there was a unique signature associated with the seismograph reading of a nuke test, does anyone have this?
Let’s not spend years arguing about what to do with NK’s nuke test as if this was an established fact.
Lt Cmdr Charles Swift is an amazing man. Makes me feel calm watching him this am. Very, very bright guy
If you want a good laugh, check out this audio-clip of a Bush speech interspersed with hecklers.

GSD @ 31
I have ABSOLUTE proof NEITHER Bush, NOR Chaney, NOR Rumsfeld even THOUGHT there were “wmd’s”
I haven’t seen this ANYWHERE, and if one of the writers here at the lake wants to do a piece I wish you would;
IF the administration had even the slightest iota of an idea there were nuclear weapons, WHY THE HELL DID THEY SEND OUR TROOPS WITHOUT RADIATION GEAR?
why?
if the answer is “the blast would kill them anyway, WHY THE HELL WEREN’T THE OUTSIDE PARAMETERS EQUIPPED WITH RADIATION GEAR?
HMMMM ??????
IF the administration THOUGHT there were “chemical weapons”, WHY THE HELL WEREN’T THE TROOPS EQUIPPED WITH ISOLATION SUITS?”
masks do nothing, chemical weapons attack the pores of your skin.
NOW
if someone asks the question and the president says “we couldn’t wait”, then he needed to at least BEGING PRODUCTION of the neccessary gear DURING THE RUN UP TO THE WAR so that at least SOME would survuve
this is loose loose for bush
IF he actually thought there were “wmd’s” then he is DERELICT to our troops for sending on a SURE MISSION OF DEATH without even BEGINNING the process of manufacturing the gear we would need
the ONLY excuse is he KNEW there were no wmd’s, ANYTHING ELSE LOOKS LIKE HE SENT OUR TROOPS ON A SUICIDE MISSION
that is entirely mathematical there are no other scenarios
these are the type of RHETORICAL questions need to be spread around since the media is NOT going to ask Rumsfeld or Chaney
just finished watching ctbob and pat carroll’s schlesinger interview video.. amazing job by all… including, suprisingly to me, schlesinger.
Christy — good morning! Sting on CBS Sunday Morning right now! :>)
Bolton avoiding Russert’s question about China’s “signing statement” to the UN resolution.
angie at 41 — oooh, thanks!
Ct Bob, thanks for airing that interview with Schlesinger. Much of what he says resonates with me, but then he gets into that GWOT stuff with yet another military response that scares the bejesus out of me. He certainly has a clear view of campaign funding problems, and his opponent Lieberman. Pat Carrol did a great job with the interview between asking good questions and letting the candidate answer fully. A great service to Ct voters.
quick question;
does anyone know what happened to the soldier that dressed down rumsfeld on national television about the lack of equiptment?
selise @ 40
selise, yes that was my thought about it. Schlesinger came off pretty well (except for his nutty talk about Iran) and I can see him appealing to those Republicans who are thinking of voting for Lieberman.
I only wish I’d gotten this interview maybe a week ago, so it would have gotten more play before the first primary tomorrow.
Oh well, we can only do so much.
And the coffee tastes really good this morning!
CT Bob - the interview with Schlesinger is awesome - I can’t wait to hear Schlesinger go after Lieberman during the interviews.
My favorite Schlesinger quote is - if Republicans vote for Lieberman they are voting to stab themselves in the back.
Of course, same goes for Dems
I must say…Captain Mustache on MtP is a serious let-down having watched a short interview with Sting.
I bet, Christy– I was late getting to notify you, sorry.
he is a phenom, eh?
There was an “Earth Charter Summit” here in Columbus yesterday morning.

angie at 50 — I have always wanted to just sit down and have lunch or dinner with him and just talk craft and composition. His constant need to continue to grow and learn and push his own boundaries is so impressive — and is one of those things that we all strive toward in some form or another, but he has been able to consistently DO it, and I’d love to talk to him about what motivates him to do so.
Would be interesting stuff…and the fatc that he is a hottie doesn’t hurt. *G*
looks like mathews DIDN’T ask condi why the president didn’t retaliate for the Cole
I am actually amazed, I thought they would prep her, make the question look foolish and ask her anyway, to which she would demean the question
I am truly amazed the question wasn’t asked
Oh, I heard through the grapevine that the RNC and RSCC have pulled out a lot of their additional ad funding from PA. Wonder if that means they’ve given up on Little Ricky Santorum…and wouldn’t that just be a shame. Am trying to get some confirmation on that — if anyone spots an article confirming, please let me know.
I’ve seen a number of posts about the RSCC and other orgs pulling out of Ohio as well.
me to me at 53 — was Condi on the Matthews show, too? I thought she was doing FOX today?

guys, I would REALLY like to find out what happened to the soldier that dressed rumsfeld down on nantional television
who is that soldier and what has become of him?
thanks for the bird photo, what a looker! As soon as I saw him i thought of my trip to costa rica, where i could sit on my porch and watch a buzzing flowered tree alive with more wildly colored feather bearing creatures than I ever imagined. Add a scope and a bird book and I was looking up species after species, sometimes by the hour. And all in the same tree!
Bird condo, I guess.
Good lord — it gets worse. Jeebus.

btw, sometime in the last few years, one of the teams still down there monitoring the parrots discovered a new species of monkey

me to me: Army Spc. Thomas Wilson, for example, of the 278th Regimental Combat Team that is comprised mainly of citizen soldiers of the Tennessee Army National Guard, asked Rumsfeld in a question-and-answer session why vehicle armor is still in short supply, nearly two years after the start of the war that ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.
“Why do we soldiers have to dig through local landfills for pieces of scrap metal and compromised ballistic glass to uparmor our vehicles?” Wilson asked. A big cheer arose from the approximately 2,300 soldiers in the cavernous hangar who assembled to see and hear the secretary of defense.
Rumsfeld hesitated and asked Wilson to repeat his question.

I don’t know how to find out current information about the soldier.
Connecticut Bob @ 65
that’s my point…that soldier is a hero, why don’t we know what
’s become of him?
Blackwell and Republicans aren’t getting a whole lot of love in Cincinnati (via Buckeye State Blog)
Curious in Central Texas @ 67
this should be a crusade of ours, we need to find this solier and make sure he’s safe
we REALLY need to, he risked his life and reputation to protect his fellow soldiers, we need to reward him for his service and we need to make sure he’s safe and secure, if not we need to find out the circumstances of any events in his life
how about a drive?
Renee at 69 — Blackwell is a frightening, small-minded little man. And I hope for all our sakes that he loses in a big way.
I read the Hartford Courant article GSD referred to above and one section really caught my eye. I’d like to know, what Dems have specifically told Joe, in no uncertain terms, that he would retain his seniority if returned to the Senate. Was it Reid? Clinton? Schumer? (Schumer sounds just about right to me)
I’d like to put Reid’s feet to the fire to find out who’s talking out both sides of their mouths? And if someone did promise this - how dare they…
Or is Joe lying about the certainty of this claim?
From the Hartford Courant article GSD referred to above -
http://www.courant.com/news/po.....lines-home
(snip)
“Lieberman’s boost from Republicans fuels speculation that he might ultimately join the GOP, especially if Democrats reconsidered allowing him to retain his seniority.
“I will not be confronted with that choice,” Lieberman said. “I will organize with the Democrats. And I am 100 percent sure, not just as a matter of hope, of speculation, but as a matter of explicit conversations I’ve had that the Democratic caucus will give me my seniority.”
He categorically ruled out accepting any post in the Bush administration. His goal, if the Democrats take the Senate, is to become the chairman of the Homeland Security Committee and serve his fourth six-year term.
“I’m not interested in anything else,” he said.”

Someone up there said, “Life changed for the better when I gave up watching the Sunday talk shows..”
Amen, amen. How very true. I can’t imagine why you encourage people to watch. Meanwhile, I have a sinking feeling… not about the Dems losing in November, but about what will happen when they WIN: an improvement, to be sure, but just a little longer tumble down the stairs to hell. The problem is, NOBODY IS TALKING ABOUT IMPEACHMENT, and you don’t need Sunday morning teevee to tell you what that means.
New thread, gang.
The event I attended yesterday provided a nice reality check about Ken Blackwell and the religious leaders who support him (some of their words and claims have been posted here).
As much as they like to use the language of faith and values, they are all about preserving “empire” and that’s about as anti-family as you can get.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 71
I think he’s losing big, Christy. And I’m hoping he takes DeWine, Pryce, and Schmidt down with him.
P.S. We’ve learned that Secretary of State is an important position, let’s go Jennifer Brunner!
anyone seen any footage of Murtha’s rally for Victoria Wulsin yesterday ???(not on her website this am)
According to this morning’s WaPo,Rove is still upbeat about the Nov elections. It sounds like Dubya’s trying to create reality again, mandating confidence from the top down.

Let me get this straight…the Cincinnati Enquirer–hometown newspaper–endorses two Democrats?
[crash…sound of egr fainting…]
His goal, if the Democrats take the Senate, is to become the chairman of the Homeland Security Committee and serve his fourth six-year term.
After he refuses to endorse a Dem takeover of Congress, how can anyone either reward or trust him with chairmanship of the HSC?
His narcissicism is unbearable. And the national Dems who refuse to excommunicate him are incredibly disappointing as well. Is all politics just a game of Stratego to them? Sigh. I already know the answer.
This is why ordinary people loathe ‘leaders’.
Millineryman @ 60
Wow! CUT AND RUN REPUBLICANS!!!
