No special Blue America guest candidate this weekend. We're getting down to the nitty-gritty and I wanted to have a different kind of discussion today.
If you're a regular here, you know about our song and our customized versions and videos. I've been hearing from people around the country that they've started finding the ads based on the song on the radio and seeing TV spots as well. This morning I had a call from a friend in Minnesota telling me she had heard the spot aired for Wendy Wilde and today I saw the TV spot that Carol Voisin is running in Oregon.
I've heard that Jerry McNerney's campaign, Coleen Rowley's campaign, Stacey Tallitsch's campaign, Mike McGraw's campaign and several others are also running it. Take a look at the Voisin ad and see what's she's done to the end of it.
If you recall, we started an Adopt A District project and last week a generous donor sent in $5,000 and adopted IL-14, John Laesch's race against Denny Hastert. Jacquie, the Blue America media buyer, worked long and hard to put together a plan to make an impact in a part of the district where we felt John's campaign could make some headway. We've bought 4 stations outside of the area where John seems to be making his major efforts (the eastern edge of the district from Elgin to Aurora). We'll be running around 230 one-minute radio spots on WDKB, a lite A/C station targeting women 30 and over in the DeKalb area, WLBK a news and information station that blankets DeKalb County, WAJK, another adult contemporary station targeting women 30 and up and WLPO, a local news/talk station, both in Oglesby. The spots are spread out between 6 AM and 7 PM for 7 days ending on election day.
Jacquie put together a similar program for local Connecticut bloggers who raised their own money to help Chris Murphy beat the odious Nancy Johnson in the 5th CD.
We're also deploying the radio spots to help our candidates in OH-02 (Dr. Victoria Wulsin vs Mean Jean Schmidt) and CA-25 (Robert Rodriguez vs Buck McKeon). That leaves almost enough money for one more district. Let's choose it today.
Everyone's entitled to make a pitch and to offer incentives to get people to vote for their candidate. Ann had these incredible "Time to Throw Musgrave Out" clocks up and she'll send them to the first 20 people who vote for Angie Paccione.
Oh, this is how you vote: You know the Blue America ActBlue Page by now– you should; you've helped us raise almost $280,000 so far. Drop some dough into the Blue America PAC slot.
BUT… here's the catch: if you want us to buy the spots for Charlie Brown add .02; if you want Chris Carney add .03; if you want John Hall add .04; if you want Eric Massa add .05; if you want Angie Paccione add .06; for David Roth add .07; for Bill Winter add .08 and for Steve Porter add .09. When we finish here today, we'll have another district.
I know there are plenty of Jay Fawcett fans here — me included — and Jay is in a dead-heat with a right wing extremist in a very Republican area. And yesterday the retiring Republican incumbent, Joel Hefley officially stated that he could not support the GOP candidate for his seat. So why don't we run our campaign for Jay? Well, the ads all talk about it being time to throw faithless incumbents out who have voted for Bush's hideous corporate agenda. The ads don't lend themselves to open districts like CO-05 or IA-01, where our man Bruce Braley is running a strong progressive campaign.
Anyway, let's discuss this and figure out who we where we want to deploy the ads. I'm really anxious to hear everyone's opinions and strategies. There is no absolute right and wrong in these matters. Don't hold back.
UPDATE: TAKE A LOOK AT REARVIEW MIRROR PROGNOSTICATION IN ACTION
The DCCC, big funders, Inside the Beltway committees and PACs and the big name pundits all live in their own little world. Those of us out in the country have seen a huge tsunami of disgust for Bush and his criminal rubber stamp Congress building. Inside the Beltway, they timidly revise upward for a seat or two their timid overviews.
Who cares? No one should; but the money follows the 2-3 week late analysis of various races.
You get a much better idea of what's really going on on the ground by reading Daily Kos, My DD, Swingstate Project or Firedoglake than by reading Charlie Cook. That said, Cook is getting a feeling that the Repugs might be in trouble. He says a 30 seat gain is more likely than a 15 seat gain. Perhaps someone should tell Rahm Emanuel or perhaps someone should have told Rahm Emanuel 3 months ago. No matter, he'll hear in enough time to position himself at the head of the victory parade. I mean he is a leader, right?

Tommy and family!
My suggestion is to put the radio spots right back where they came from, North Carolina. Home of the Squirrel Nut Zippers. North Carolinians already know their sound I presume so there’s a comfort level there with that. Also, congressional district boundaries are not the same as radio reach! Split the radio air time expense 50/50 on Larry Kissell (NC-08) in the Charlotte area and Roger Sharpe (NC-05) in the Winston Salem area. Spots placed in those two cites would basically cover the entire state radio reach wise. The radio ads would also reach parts of South Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee from those two cities. The ads could be candidate specific, generic “Had Enough” or a combination of both (my recommendation). Generic ads would have some bleed over in other races in the listening area.
Charlotte should be pretty cheap for air time relative to the rest of the country. Winston Salem, even cheaper. Both are good candidates and let’s give our “long shot” (Roger Sharpe) some follow through! In 1974 “embarrassed republicans” (Watergate) stayed home and didn’t vote. As a result, a Dem “long shot” came out of nowhere and won in NC-5, it could happen again. Focus the concentration (money) radio wise in one targeted state given the limited funds, think “Big Fish, Little Pond”.
Cozumel, Kissell is a big fave, of course, but he has his own media strategy and “Have You Had Enough?” is a little rough for what his campaign wants. We can’t coordinate with ANY campaigns but someone had a theoretical discussion with them and they want to do their own thing. AND THE GOOD NEWS: It is working. Kissell is ahead of Hayes and he looks like a winner.
Cook also said that the Democratic Party should borrow 10,000,000 right now to sink half a million in twenty additional expansion races.
From Cook’s typewriter to God’s ears.
As for Coz’s suggestion — a great one. And if strategically significant, Howie, it would be a great thing to do for Tommy to remind him what a difference he has made in such a tangible way in his own back yard.
Cook is certainly right that the DCCC should be spending money in FAR more districts than they are. Emanuel is the worst catastrophe in the history of the modern Democratic Party. As I’ve been saying all year, Rahm Emanuel is the only thing the Republicans have going for them.
Howie! Rootz!
And if Tommy lives in western NC — we could go with some eastern Tennessee races?
Howie Klein @ 3
Well, shoot. I didn’t know that about Kissell. Sharpe seems OK with ad though.
immanentize @ 7
We have, alas, a limited budget and we’re going to keep this to the candidates who we’ve met and talked to here at FDL. And these are progressives who will fight for our values, not generic Democrats who may be as likely to represent the interests of Big Business as they are to fight for workers and consumers. Is there someone in Tennessee I missed??
Carville says that the dems should borrow 5 million and spend it in second tier races- cause things are movin so fast that the may have a chance to hold the house for a decade with a big investment this year. Might be right.
Bringin in more money would change the calculations.
Angie Paccione. She’s a great candidate running against one of the worst incumbents in Congress. It’s a bellweather state too, and a Musgrave loss will end the nutty dreams of using the constitution to discriminate against people.
Howie Klein @ 5
This is so true — but I am worried that a huge victory for the Democrats, which seems possible right now, will boost Rahm’s stock (certainly his already prodigious self-image). He has been running down Dean forever in case things went bad there would be a scapegoat.
Does that mean Emmanuel will be willing to praise Dean if the Dems win? Of course not. There must be a post-election Rahm strategy.
Cozumel @ 8
Howie, no you didn’t miss anyone — unless Ford for senate counts :~)
Howie, I was preparing a great big speech (that means long and boring) about why Dr. Wulsin should be supported.
And here, you’ve gone and done it already.
You’re such a genius!
Angie Fan @ 11
I have a great feeling about Angie too, not just because of how bad Musgrave is– and she is as bad as they come– but because Angie would make an A-1 congresswoman.
You are right, Howie, the Conventionally Wise are coming around, but slowly. This week, I got an email from John Kerry, presuming to “introduce” me to John Laesch (ha!) and raise funds for him. The news of Kerry’s support also made the CNN Political Ticker, a CW summary if I ever saw one.
http://www.cnn.com/POLITICS/bl…..terts.html
It’s great to be out here on the bleeding edge of the blogs, and be able to say, “Oh, right….” whenever TradMed or TradPols catch the scent of a story we’ve known about for weeks or months. I got a nice thank-you note from John Laesch in yesterday’s snail-mail, prompting me to drop another $100 in his BlueAmerica bucket last nite. Not easy to spare it, but gosh, we need to take our country back!

The community seems to love Wulsin and hate Mean Jean and both John Amato and Jane are big Wulsin fans (as am I) and Jacquie got some great deals in that district
Rahm’s biggest job was recruiting candidates. I have mostly heard that he did a decent if not spectacular job. He’s got to raise money too- and I don’t know how he’s done vs his predecessors. Not too bad maybe.
The guy in charge always gets shredded when he prioritizes the money- that just goes with the territory- but if someone DOESNT DO THAT you lose
rwcole @ 10
I’d like to see some safe Senate Democrats upping their investment in the Quake of 2006. Hillary? Dianne? Florida Bill? Do ya really need that huge warchest, or could a second-tier investment right now make a real difference?
rwcole @ 19
Actually Rahm did a really bad job recruiting. He set out to chase away anyone who opposed the war or was “too progressive” and to replace them with… actual Republicans! Look at Foley’s seat in Florida as an example. After Hoyer and DeLay ran Dave Lutrin, a union member and teacher and anti-war progressive out of the race with their dirty tricks, we’re stuck with a Republican who changed his party affiliation in June or July as “our” candidate. That’s not an anomoly; it’s typical Emanuel.
TeddySanFran @ 20
I know I am a broken record, but…
Vote with your heart and pocketbook! Blue America PAC can use the love, and so can a very deserving congressional race!
I hope everybody understands that to vote you put the contribution in the PAC slot, not the candidate slot. I tried to explain it in the post above so you can vote for the canididate of your choice and, at Cozumel’s suggestion, we just added in Roger Sharpe (add .11 to your donantion to indicate you want the ads to run in Sharpe’s district).
Angie Paccione can use all the help you can give – Muskrat’s pounding away with negative ads – saw >three in a row! Muskrat came to Longmont (reddest of the red towns) and got only a lukewarm greeting. Angie Paccione, in contrast, got a standing ovation as she took the podium and roaring ovation as she left. Musgrave, meanwhile was being buttonholed by gay activists asking ‘What have you done for us??’ – Musgrave’s response: “What have you done for ME” – classic Delayism. Let’s send a message to the right: “Kiss the Chimp, Feel the Crimp”!!!!
Howie- well given the demographics of Foley’s district, I would have gone for the reformed gooper too. Didn’t the district go for Bush by over 60%?
Don’t see how a progressive wins there- unless I’m confused about the district.
Wwcole, we’ve heard from a number of candidates right here on FDL about Rahm’s complete lack of interest in their candidacies. Some of them might win this November, and it will be our support that has helped make the difference.
Dr. Wulsin is a prime example. And I think this should also be the kind of candidate we pick for Howie’s next Had Enough campaign.
By the way, it looks like Steven Porter has finally gotten a chance to debate that slug Phil English:
U.S. Rep. Phil English, of Erie, R-3rd Dist., and his Democratic challenger, Steven Porter, have agreed to a debate on Nov. 2 from 4 to 5 p.m. in the studio of radio station WJET-AM/1400.
Tim Hagberg, the Constitution Party candidate from the Warren area, also is expected to participate.
Porter, of Wattsburg, said he is trying to move the venue to Mercyhurst College because Mercyhurst students have asked for a debate. But Jeff Johns, program director for the station, said he has no plans to move it.
Johns will moderate and ask questions. Sheila Sterrett, director of government affairs for the Manufacturers’ Association of Northwest Pennsylvania, also will ask questions.

rwcole @ 26
Fawcett is a total progressive and in a district FAR nore conservative than Foley’s. It went for Bush in 2004 by 66%, one of the highest in the country. The race is an exact tie. Luckily for Fawcett, Emanuel didn’t think Dems had a chance there. I wouldn’t call Mahoney a “reformed gooper.” I’d call him a gooper with a new party registration. I hope he proves me wrong.
ifthethunderdontgetya @ 27
Porter wrote a guest post at DWT this morning– all about holding them accountable.
Howie Klein @ 24
Thanks!
Thunder
Don’t really know that much about Rahm or what he’s done- but I totally support having someone in charge of the nationwide effort makin tough decisions about when to hold em and when ta fold em. This can’t be done “democratically” where every candidate gets an equal share- someone needs to be a monomaniac with a mission and decide early on how many races to fund and who has a good shot at winning. If that’s what Rahm’s been doing- then it’s fine by me.
We are now, apparently, in the middle of a flood where many of the marginal races are becoming competitive. That doesn’t mean that Rahm “made a mistake”, it just means that the election Gods are being kinder than we could ever have imagined. He’s still got to prioritize- and the election God’s didn’t (I guess) bring him a huge bag of money.
Howie- Well I don’t know how reformed the guy is either- but I’ll take the win if we can get it.
Having the dems come back in red states won’t happen overnight- and especially in the south- there are gonna be lotsa yellow dogs along the way.
Howie Klein @ 29
Wow, that new tv ad by Alan Friedman is pretty spectacular… I love how the “Have You Had Enough?” ads always seem to include a swaying woman in them… remember the chick that looked like Jane from the one in LA?
rwcole @ 31
If that’s what Rahm’s been doing- then it’s fine by me.
Plenty of us have been paying attention to exactly what Rahm’s been doing, rwcole. And to what Lieberman’s been doing. If you want to keep supporting them, go ahead.
I’m here because I see a community that wants to make a difference.
rwocole – I think you’re missing the point. Rahm actively worked against progressives and has ignored a whole ton of great candidates who stand up for progressive values. The flood we’re seeing now (and I hope it continues through Nov 7) is not simply a Foley reaction, it’s based on the hard, hard work – day in, day out – of these progressive candidates and the grassroots support they’ve built and folks like us have given. They have fought their way into position to win – and they are doing so well not because they followed Rahm’s nonsense strategy of ignore the war, pretend you’re a republican – they are doing so well *because* they are stand up progressives speaking truth in their districts and voters are excited about finally having a real alternative to the incumbent protection party.
Rahm has worked against us – thank goodness we have folks like Howie and the whole netroots team to fight for our values.
Most spectacular act by a dem in a gooper role is Ford in Tennessee. I saw a bit of his debate the other day- and the guy quotes the Bible every other sentence. Made his gooper opponent appear sane- but Ford’s ahead- and the copyright on the Bible done expired- so ANYONE can quote it for free- a win’s a win.
well, I couldn’t decide amongst all these excellent candidates, and the passionate discussions on which sleaze-bag-racist-homophobic-anti-woman-Republican deserves to be run out of Congress on a rail the most, while all excellent, only made my decision harder.
So I just dropped $100 into the pac bucket to be used as needed.
When I get home from this business trip, I think I’m going to have to get out the old mason jars filled with nickels and dimes (once a waitron, always a waitron), go to the bank and get it counted and deposited into my account for my final round of contributions. I’ve already accepted I wouldn’t be making any deposits into my IRA this year, investing those monies into getting Democrats elected. I figure having a real democracy again is a better investment in everyone’s future, not just mine.
I just checked the donations and this looks like a strong and close race (so far) between Angie Paccione in Colorado and David Roth in California. It’s early though and anyone could take it
thunder- I have never supported Lieberman- but thanks for asking.
I am asking questions here about Rahm- and haven’t gotten many answers- but if ya want ta hate him- well have at it.

I’m familiar with your comments from back in the Lamont-Lieberman primary. Don’t try your cupidity on me.
Barack Obama and Rahm are coming to Indianapolis on Monday for a quickie noon fundraiser for the 3 hot Hoosier races – the media are excluded from the Senator’s speech – the local Democrats including the Mayor and Congresswoman are upset too. A very bossy style by the DCCC…

In your opinion- did Rahm prioritize too many races, not enough, or just the wrong ones. (fROM THE STANDPOINT OF TRYIN TO TAKE BACK THE HOUSE)
I’m in for Steve Porter with a special thanks to Tommy Yum.
*ilson46201 @ 42
ugghhhh… By the way, a tip for election day. Indiana polls close early. If we win those 3 seats– which looks likely– we take the House for sure. If we take a 4th seat (Pence’s, which would go to an actual progressive who favors the same things we favor at FDL, Barry Welsh), the GOP ceases to be a force in Congress. The 4th seat in Indiana would indicate that the Democrats, despite Rahm’s lame strategy, will take over 60 Republican seats– a landslide that would reflect the nation’s opinion of how Bush and his rubber stamp Congress have misgoverned.
rwcole@31,
If, as you say, “the election Gods didn’t … bring [Rahm] a huge bag of money,” then maybe we can. For example, I just wrote a much smaller check to the IRS than I expected, and have a couple grand burning a hole in my pocket. I’m tempted to give it to McNerney, but I really don’t think Pombo is vulnerable this time (that said, if the article in the SF Chron a few weeks ago about demographic change in that district is accurate, Pombo is toast next time no matter what he does).
Anyone out there have thoughts on where my $ can do the most good? And please don’t say “DSCC.” They’ve been calling me nonstop since the beginning of September, and I’m not giving them a dollar because of their failure to unequivocally say in July that they would back the winner of the Connecticut primary no matter who it was (I sent a letter to Schumer telling him that).

His philosophy was wrong and that led him to go after FAR too few races (as well as wasting too much money in primaries to defeat progressives like Cegelis and Lutrin, where he prevailed, and McNerney, where he was routed.)
RBG @ 47
I just sent in $100.09 (and 10% tip) myself. Since the two people I was thinking about were Dr. Wulsin and Dr. Porter, this was an easy choice. And if FDL picks someone else, it is already guaranteed to be a fine choice. If only Jennifer Nix’s donors could achieve this clarity!

BLUE AMERICA PAC!
The case for Angie: First, she’s a dynamo on the stump, and isn’t afraid to stand up for her values. Right now, many Republicans are switching to Angie for this election, because they are tired of the bullying politics of Marilyn, and because they see the national government is so extreme and so out of whack that they know we need balance. These folks understand that the well being of the country is at stake.
Angie’s got Marilyn on the run. Even Musgrave’s own internal numbers show she has only 43% of the vote! That’s a two-term incumbent. Musgrave is one of the most vulnerable incumbents in America, because the Ds are united, the Us are disgusted, and the moderate Rs are tired of the religious fanatics attacking them all of the time.
Angie’s been hammering Marilyn, and you’ll see it at the http://muskrathunt.blogspot.com blog. Musgrave is weak on the stump and people can’t stand her, Angie just needs help getting the word out!
Thunder- what’s “cupidity”?
I have thought all along that taking on Joe was noble but not wise this year- I still think that- but I don’t support him.

*ilson’s description of the style of this upcoming Rahm Obama nooner typifies the cognitive dissonance the dinos are going to present the Democratic Party at the time (2nd Wednesday in November) the progressive wing of the party delivers the Bidens, Obamas, Hillarys and Emanuels the victory the dinos refused to foresee.
The dinos are going to be less gracious toward the left and far left after the electoral victory than Karl Rove is to his fungelicals.
ah, hell. I was going to plead “tapped out” for the week, but I just succumbed. My first thought was McNerney (v. Toxic Pombo), but there’s probably some reason he’s not on the list today.
If FDLer Nate can sell his worldly belongings and move from HI to work on the Charlie Brown campaign, then I can throw a little coin that way too. That’s my two-cents worth.
Howie, saying you have done a terrific job is a gross understatement.
If Bill Clinton could visit some of these districts, that would probably pull in the revenue you need, but there probably isn’t time.
From far left field, would it be possible for candidates you like to submit three to five names and phone numbers of big donors in their district to you and you (Jane and Christy)
begforward them to Clinton? There are many weaknesses to this, but in the little time remaining, it might be the best way to leverage Clinton’s star power to fuel these races.OT, if you like this idea or some iteration of it, you’d probably want the candidate to bracket Bill’s calls with letters and his/her own calls, so that Bill doesn’t accidentally ask them to donate to Hillary. I fully realize the actual logistics of making something like this work are rather daunting.
Thanks again for all your great work.

Yes, perhaps he has a strategy, but he’s certainly lost a lot of credibility in the last couple of years. There’s very little he could offer that I would be willing
to be bribed withto accept. Unless, of course, he wants to do his freaking JOB.Wow, Howie, thanks for putting Carol Voisin’s ad up here! Just came back from debate practice and there she is! She has an ActBlue page too (hint, hint :)) and we could certainly use the money. Walden’s got $1 million to spend.
The hard part for us here in this HUGE district is that we have no idea where we stand – no polls or anything other then the feel of an anti-incumbent election. In Walden’s latest newsletter he whines about our “nasty” letters to the editor which I can’t imagine him doing unless some internal polling shows a close race. We just don’t know.
Howie has been such an asset to our campaign, and we are running the Had Enough spots starting anyday.
burnspbesq @ 49
Glad you asked. First of all, the latest polls show Pombo losing to McNerney, so giving McNerney some dough is not a bad strategy. If you want to toss in $5,000, you can Adopt A District and we’d run our ad spots for the progressive candidate of your choice.
My opinion: Colorado is poised for a Democratic sweep. We could see 4 GOP seats change hands with 4 right-wingers replaced with 4 progressives: Perlmutter, Paccione, Winter and Fawcett. That’s a good bet.
Here in CA, we have good shots with Charlie Brown, Jerry McNerney, David Roth and our dark horse in CA-25, Robert Rodriguez.
the 4th possible upset in Indiana is the 3rd CD held by winger David Souder. The Democrat challenger would at least grudgingly vote for Speaker Pelosi – that’s the best I know of him…
If Mike Pence would go down, the very gates of Heaven would swing open and Christ himself would descend to bless the first day of the new Congress on January 3rd…
Mr. Justification is campaigning. Can’t he just dedicate the Memorial and shut the fuck up.
Mark Souder, Mr. Abstinence-Only Sex Education!

Is that that Rapture thing?
@49 – burnspbesq – consider tossing that cash into the Blue America PAC as Jacqrat mentioned – and vote for which of the districts Howie mentioned above – this means your contribution will become a direct, concrete force helping a proven progressive with a chance to win.
That’s the exciting thing about this whole Blue America project – we’re not just little drops in a monster pond, we’re able to actually propel the wave with well placed contributions like the way we’ve paid for specific tv spots or direct mailings for some of our candidates and like today where we can put a very effective message (and fun song which gets people happy & energized about the election)on the air in carefully selected target spots.
( I know she’ll never say herself that she minds, but can I point out to ‘lakers that the vowels in Siun’s name occur in alphabetical order? )

Steve Harrison v Vito Fosslella
There are no polls on this race that I’m aware, but Fosella is a well funded incumbant rubber stamp and Harrison has goten no support from the DCCC or the DNC.
harrison has a lot going for him in his uphill battle. He’s good at making Bush’s policies a ball and chain for Fossella. We have Elliot Spitzer at the top of the ticket and he has very long coat tails in NY. This will be a big boost foe Harrison.
I’d appreciate it if folks would look in on this race and add any positive energy you can spare. This seat CAN be flipped to the Blue column.

Maybe Oklahoma Kiddo can persuade Senator Clinton to cough up $5M or so from the Senator’s war chest.
My vote is with David Roth in CA-45. His campaign has done what no other has done out here in history — and he can win, no doubt about that. It’s either now or never folks…and Mary Bono has got to go!!! Just look at recent DailyKos postings about Roth’s race…and HELP him out!
punaise @ 57
Me too. I found Nate’s decision inspiring.
Oh and lol about 2 cents worth, adding 2 cents to show voting for Brown.
The hardest thing is that Howie has found us such great candidates – so many good choices!
I am blushing Siun, please don’t feed the ego.
If folks don’t understand the significance of Clear Channel being forced to offer 10 dollar-a-hollah radio spots…
They are the EPITOME of corporate greed and malfeasance. (In fact, I just looked up the spelling of the word, and there they were – staring back at me!)
They own more radio/tv/outdoor/ venues than any other company in the country – and their speciality is to come into a radio market (deregulated in 1996 – thank you, NOT!) and buy up the majority of stations in order to set High prices.
So, ten bucks a spot is a BIG deal.
Ralph Santora @ 81
I agree… This is a race that can change the playing field…and there is no better candidate out there than Roth.
Siun @ 83
You can vote more than once and for any number of candidates you like in our poll!
Siun @ 83
That’s also the best thing. Thank you, Howie!
Michael Weissman @ 85
Ralph, Looks like a lot of people agree with you. Roth has the biggest number of votes (if not the biggest contributions)

I met Roth the other night, went to his fundraiser in LA. His dad is adorable. I’m thinking HE should be a stop on TRex’s virtual USO tour.

Citizen Howie Klein:
I’m a transplanted Minnesotan over here on the east bank a the St. Croix River… I haven’t seen you mention the good possibility of a 3 seat pick up in Minnesota. Shouldn’t we be funneling some cash down ta the guy who’s tryin ta take Gil Gutknecht out. For that matter the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Congressional Districts are all pick up opportunities that could hold for a good couple of election cycles, do you have any late info on these races?
KEEP THE FAITH AND TAKE CAREFUL AIM, THERE ARE A LOTTA TARGETS OUT THERE!!!
Siun @ 78
Actual quote from radio guy who we bought for John Laesch, after Howie sent him the spot: “Plays fine, Gets you singing along, “
Robert Rodriguez CA-25, one of the fastest changing districts in the country is the first Democrat to mount a serious campaign against the Republican incumbent Howard “Buck” McKeon since McKeon won 14 years ago. The district is suddenly a majority minority district after just a few years of the highest Latino growth rate on the west coast.
Jacqrat – that’s what I love about Had Enough! everyone I send it to, they can’t stop playing it and singing it!
And that’s why getting this on the radio is soooo great – folks are so tired of the usual political ads but this one makes them smile and join in.

Jane, that’s an excellent idea. Perhaps if you promised to keep the Taser holstered…

Relevant post to this discussion over at Next Hurrah. I agree with the writer that pumping a few million into these 2nd and 3rd tier races could open up a tidal wave in this election. C’mon Rahm, et al, wtf? That’s why what Howie, ActBlue, FDL, etc. are doing for these races is so vital. Push to the finish line and Take This Country Back!

The “guy” is Wendy Wilde and she went up on radio with “Have You Had Enough” spots this week. GO WENDY!!!
Hey gang – we’re not far from breaking $20K for the Blue America PAC – let’s hit the air!
Persuade Hillary? That is a concept. Faith can move mountains. I’ve heard it said. Why not a Hill?
Siun @ 102
Thanks Siun; we’re $1,000 from our 4th district. I know we’ll get there but if we get there today, we can get the ads up on the radio when it can help most– NOW! I’m still seeing a close race between David Roth, Angie Paccione, Steve Porter and Charlie Brown, although there’s enough time left for Massa, Hall, Sharpe, Carney or Winter to win too. And let me mention again that Ann made some incredible “Time To Throw Musgrave Out” clocks up that the first 30 contributors for Paccione get.
I’m frustrated with the incumbent dems who are not supporting these great candidates but I also remind myself that we don’t need some selfinterested bigshot to save us – we can do it ourselves and that’s what I love about netroots – it’s our energy and our money that’s taking back this country – one radio spot at a time!
We’re soldiers, not commas.
Warning: some of these images are not easy viewing.
What does it cost to run this ad, had how come NOBODY is talking about Francine Busby in CA50? I realize she got lots of attention last June.
The San Diego Democratic Party and Busby’s campaign are saying there is loud talk of a grand jury chat with Bilbray regarding his legal residence, tax breaks etc.
are you mad enough?
RE: Howie at 104:
This reminds me of “Dialing for Dollars” Channel 13 used to run during a noontime movie every day…
“How about it, Howie…What is the Count and the amount?”
Jacqrat @ 109
Two huge contributions just came in for Angie and it looks like she’s pulled ahead now.
Terry Olson @ 107
Terry, Busby has low-keyed the race herself. Her campaign has their own strategy and it doesn’t seem to include the netroots unfortunately. I invited her to one of our chats, we’ve raised her over $15,000 and add to that every day. But she’s fighting this her own way. From what I can see, it’s going to take a tsunami big enough to swamp Mike Pence– or a grand jury indictment of Bilbray. But the Feds rarely indict during a campaign. I was shocked when they announced they are investigating Weldon and his lobbyist daughter for a massive bribery scheme. Sestak is pulling so far ahead, Weldon might as well stop spending money.
Terry Olson @ 107
If you want to adopt a whole district, it’s $5,000. But smaller amounts have brought in almost $15,000 so far, enough for 3 districts. (We had one person adopt John Laesch’s district and Jacquie has already set up the deals with 4 stations. I’m sending the checks today and I sent the customized spots last night.)

Howie: Yeah, what about CA50…is Busby toast?
KEEP THE FAITH, THIS MIGHT GET TA BE FUN!!!
Okay- I “voted”!!!
Laesch is the kind of candidate who will fight til the very end. And if he loses– a possibility– let’s not forget that Hastert has already said he is retiring in 2008.
Howie Klein @ 112
Terry, per-spot cost varies, depending on how close a station is to a major market metro, rating, etc.
Blue America PAC focuses on “fringe” stations – those that cover the District well, but aren’t so close to the metro as to be cost-prohibitive.
For example, in IL-14 we got 230 spots for $5,000 – making the avg. spot cost $21 dollars and change. HTH
I cast my ‘vote’ for Angie. I haven’t lived in Colorado for over 20 years; but I was born and raised in the southern part of the state and went to school in Boulder. My mom and sister still live there and my heart still pounds whenever I fly over the Front Range and get my first peek through the clouds at ‘my homestate’. It’s been too long since Colorado has had Congressional representation that was anything other than embarrassing or downright cringe-worthy. With Angie, though, I will know what it is to feel proud in that respect again. Go Angie!
And thanks Howie. Especially for setting up ActBlue to accept donations from we Americans who live outside of the country but still want desperately to help reclaim what is best about America in ways that go beyond making sure to send in that absentee ballot.
oh…okI see it
230 spots! wow! so that’s 230 times folks are gonna hear Had Enough! and start singing along and tell their friends about this fun song and …
that’s gotta help push the momentum for Laesch!
and Howie’s so right – we are looking at wins this year but we’re also helping to build a progressive team of candidates for ‘08
NorskeFlamethrower @ 115
No, but the polling isn’t good and she doesn’t seem to be motivating the base. Francine is great and she should be herself and stop listening to the DCCC and she’d win. She could still win– Bilbray is a terrible candidate– but if I had to pick a southern California candidate to put my money on, I’d look at either David Roth or Robert Rodriguez– or, better yet, both.
Grateful thanks to Howie and his workshop of elves for helping get the Carol Voisin ad together. I’d like to tell how important it is to a way-underdog campaign like Voisin’s to have this help.
This isn’t a plea for money – Voisin isn’t even on the lists to vote for. The reason is that our district OR-2 is so big and rural and red (R-Walden wins by 40 points all the time), that it rarely attracts a real Dem candidate, and people don’t feel like giving money or time or belief to such a safe Republican seat. Carol Voisin is a real candidate, but she wasn’t able to attract the $250k necessary to show that she was a real threat, so she gets no money from the DCCC, Emily’s list, or any of the other big players in the money game. Kos wrote a post last month about not whining about stuff like that, and we agree that the bucks need to go where we can win seats and take back the house. But without any seed money, it becomes really hard to make a creditable challenge, and get your voice heard.
The Voisin campaign started late, and didn’t really get going until Roots Project people showed up after Ykos. We’re doing a good job (www.voisinforcongress.com), but with a 100-1 cash disadvantage its hard to get the word out. In our case, getting the word out about Walden and the Republicans will make a difference in the 2008 run against Republican Gordon Smith, and control of the Senate. It would seem that a real 50-state strategy would ensure some minimal support (like $20K) for campaigns in all the districts, before spending all the rest of the millions on the 30 races that Rahm gets to choose.
But that isn’t the way it works. And that’s where Howie and Blue America come in. We contacted them when we saw the first Had Enough? spot, and asked how we could get one. Everything was easy, everything was free, everything was fast, and we now have a professional, catchy, and edgy TV ad that will get us some attention and let people know the choices that are out there. And being frontpaged on FDL will help us get us a little more money to run the ad a few more times.
So thanks to Howie and Friends, Downwithtyranny, and FDL, and good luck to all the candidates, from the volunteers at the Voisin campaign…
Howie- thanks for all of the incredible work you have done, from ever since when. When I put in my “vote” I did it also with the idea of celebrating your fabulous contributions, hard work getting info on the candidates, great writeups, etc. etc.
Howie Klein @ 16
Amen, brother. Angie is the real deal–10 minutes in the same room with her and I’ve seen hard core Republicans convert. Folks can spot a fake a mile away. Angie is just geniune. She’s also incredibly intelligent, a true progressive and downright inspiring.
And hell, we could use your help in defeating MM–she’s raised over 3 million (and a million of that was just with the visits by Cheney and Bush.) She’s got big money on her side but Angie has the truth on hers. Angie’s campaign is about as grassroots as it gets but she’s still managed to raise almost 1.5 million and over 85% of those donations are from inside Colorado.
Thanks Howie!
Jack O’Roses and the Voisin team – thanks to all of you for understanding the value of getting out there and fighting even if the odds are against you. We will never build a progressive party if we don’t do exactly this – make the alternative visible, introduce folks to the idea that there are candidates who do speak for them and getting a foot in the door.
Bravo to each of you!
Jack o’Roses (#123)– you forgot something: a good place to donate to Carol’s campaign.
Voisin means neighbor in French.

Thanx for you incredible work …the world is a much better place ‘cuz of you. How do you see the leadership battles in the Democratic Party shakin’ out if we win both the House and Senate? Is there any hope of freezin’ Rahm outta leadership in the House…how about cashin’ The Bookkeeper Schumer out in the Senate and containing Mrs. Clinton’s power base in the leadership?
Have you had hits from Rahm during your work day… that you can talk about anyway?

I vote for Roth in the CA-45th. Thanks, thanks, thanks to Firedoglake and DownWithTyranny for the coverage you all have given to David Roth these past weeks.
Roth takes any questions, unlike Mary Bono who is hiding. He walks up to the GOP volunteers at registration tables and charms them. His win here will be a thunderbolt to the GOP. The Republicans are losing Rancho Mirage. Deal with that, Rove.
Another thing to consider – Howie, Tommy, Ken, Rickie, Mike, Siun, Adam, and producer Andy Paley (apologies if I missed someone) have provided real, effective (we hope!) creative content and support for FREE to campaigns that have been ignored by the DCCC.

What Jacqrat said.
It is now neck and neck between Steve Porter and Angie Paccione, with David Roth slightly behind and Charlie Brown coming up fast.
But the Feds rarely indict during a campaign. I was shocked when they announced they are investigating Weldon and his lobbyist daughter for a massive bribery scheme. Sestak is pulling so far ahead, Weldon might as well stop spending money.
As a native PA-07′er I ain’t counting any chickens yet. One poll has Sestak up 52-44, which is indeed very good news, but Weldon has built quite the little machine up there and will undoubtedly be fighting back with the “politically motivated prosecution” (yes, I know, but when has that ever stopped a Republican?) and the “nothing to see here” defenses.
All of which is to say that anyone who is interested should still consider giving to Sestak — I know there are several Act Blue pages (including Atrios’s) that include him …
Drive by …
Hey Howie, or anyone, I have a question
Just did some precinct walking for Charlie Brown and on my way to do some phone banking for Rob Haswell – is there a generic video of Have You Had Enough? Because Rob is a really great guy and I’d like to do a blog for Rob using/borrowing the video ;-)
Thanks, will check back later
p.s. And yes, I have, had enuf
Thanks, Howie and Everyone!
I’ll contact Busby and Crisenzo (CA49) campaigns and see if we can’t do something! How do I get in touch if they are interested?
I voted $100.06 for Paccione. She’s been hit with a ton of negative ads, and the DCCC just pulled $600,000 that they’d promised her as part of the “Red to Blue” program.
I was really surprised Carney got so few “votes.” He’s the furthest ahead of any of our candidates. I mean if we were only going to wind up with one Blue America candidate in DC next year, it would be Carney. Sherwood’s campaign has totally self-destructed. He’s made every mistake in the book– even over and above choking his mistress and telling the police he was just massaging her.
Money in politics is not the problem. Money from corporate interests is the problem. Every dollar we give is one we don’t need from corporate interests, leaving our progressive candidates free to vote for good policy, to investigate fearlessly and to take back our goverment.
Give now. I have. Next week it may be too late.

Thanks Siun! Met Jack O Roses and Old Gardener here on FDL, next thing ya know Carol’s campaign was going the netroots/grassroots route. It’s a nice diverse volunteer staff of smart passionate people. I’m new to being directly involved in a campaign, and all this nuts-and-bolts machinery of a campaign will benefit all of us next time, no matter the result.
Truly building from the ground up, finding what is successful (or not), and sticking to our values.
If anything, a landslide would affirm Dean’s insistence on a 50 state strategy, and the importance of challenging EVERY seat and being in EVERY race. If that happens, Rahm looks rather foolish. That being said, I don’t think Rahm is THAT bad…he’s just more of a pragmatist than a idealist.
rwcole @ 39
rwcole – luv ya – but you were against supporting a progressive candidate instead of Lieberman, from the word go.
If you are tuned in to any of the Congressional elections, I’m surprised you don’t know more about Rahm. He’s been absolutely appalling in terms of marginalizing many candidates who he considers too progressive to run successfully. He’s also fought Dean tooth and nail regarding the 50 state approach. It is only those two things – developing state & local dem parties, and encouraging impassioned progressive candidates with grassroots support – that have Dems poised to make such an impact on midterm elections.
All that said – I am so grateful to Howie Klein for vetting so many amazing candidates on ActBlue – so we don’t have to take the time to research candidates across the country. I have had friends come to me who want to support progressive candidates but don’t know where to begin – and I’ve sent them to ActBlue. It’s been great.
And I want to thank Jane & Christy for inviting the many ActBlue candidates to join us for truly valuable discussions. I’ve been able to support candidates in Montana, Colorado, Ohio, etc. that I would not have known about any other way. Politics will only change when policians like Chuck or Rahm no longer hold the purse strings and make the decisions regarding who is or is not worthy to run for office.
Siun @ 153
Yep. The last thing I want is to fall a few votes short and know I could have done just a little bit more. I’m giving it my all, right up to the finish line. I know you are too. Love ya much.
Howie Klein @ 140

Dag! the MetroPiratan came across some serious booty (the pirate kind) this week…
OK, we went over $20,000 (whew) so that means we definately have a 4th candidate who will get radio spots. I want to be sure it’s all counted right before I announce the winner. It is almost an exact tie between Charlie Brown and Angie Paccione. I will tabulate with a calculator so I get it right and announe it in 10 minutes. Voting closes in 2 minutes– at 2:15 Pacific Time on the nose, although by all means, keep on contributing. Who knows… maybe we’ll have enough for a 5th candidate!!
rock on Howie! thanks for everything!
Guess I’ll postpone my forest sanity walk for
another10 minutes. Thanks Howie, and thanks for making this possible.
As the generous donor who contributed $5,000.00 to run the spots in Il-14, I must tell people how wonderful it feels to give for a cause this good, and to bounce around all day thinking about how energized the Laesch volunteers will be when they turn on the radios and hear this zippy song playing. They have to go into that last week with a little more energy so they can ring one more doorbell, make one more call, find one more volunteer to help.
If you’ve ever campaigned for office or worked for a campaign, this is hard, exhausting work, and what keeps you going is the energy that keeps coming in, sometimes from unexpected places.
I’m two thousand miles away from Illinois, but I can do something with money that will help these patriots working to take their country back.
Finally, thanks for doing Vic Wulsin’s campaign. I grew up in Cincinnati, and this is another district close to my heart.
Aeolus @ 165
I didn’t want to “expose” you as the “generous donor” but now that you’re out, THANKS ON BEHALF OF ALL OF US!!! John’s campaign has been flooded with money since the Foley-Hastert cover-up started breaking. And Jacquie put together a great radio campaign in a part of the district where we hope to make a real difference.
Aeolus @ 165

second runner up was David Roth
runner up was Angie Paccione (and SO close)
And the winner is… Charlie Brown, a candidate we all loved when he came to FDL with his wife and talked with us a couple months ago. I think Jacquie already has a radio campaign outlined.

Woo hoo! I voted for a winner… (hopefully, they’re all winners on Nov. 7). Nate’s going to be one happy camper.
Howie, an idea for an independent project in Illinois where Laesch is running against Hastert.
I’ve noticed that the Aurora Commuter Train Platform is the select place for CNN to collar people and ask what they think of Hastert. Why not find some Independent Volunteers, paste up a 4 page tabloid, and hit that train station every morning between 6AM and perhaps 8:30 AM. I think it would get CNN coverage, and people who take the train to the loop need something to read along with their coffee.
The cost for something like this is essentially a cheap (Union shop) print job on newsprint — and I suspect there is enough “ditch Hastert” stuff around the blogs that could be snatched and toned down a bit, and used for content. Moreover, if CNN picks up a picture of volunteers working the commuter stop, all to the good. Volunteer Committes that are independent can’t say “vote for Laesch,” but they can say here is a bio of the opponent, and an outline of what he stands for. I think commuters are a good target audience in this race. They vote, but generally they are not political activists, as they have too little time for party stuff.
Aeolus @

Jacqrat @ 177
Jacquie, the advertising rates we’re getting makes me think the people you’re talking to like hearing from you too. Keep up the great work!!

WHAT A GREAT IDEA!!! My plate is so full that there’s no room for even a little tiny thing more for me to do. But maybe Pach could get the Illinois Roots guys on this? Or maybe this is something to pass on to the Laesch folks (which I will do)
Howie Klein @ 181
Heh.. what can I say. “I’m ADORABLE!”
Howie Klein @ 182
This is a FANTABULOUS idea… and so Pach/Roots Project-worthy. I wonder, what if we could pass out “Have You Had Enough?” CD’s or include the URL for a free download of the song within the printed material – not only would we get Visual but Aural impact, as well! Think about everyone playing this great song on their iPods, or Microsoft thingers while riding into Chi-town!
Hi — I’m late to the party, but I put in my .02 for Charlie Brown. We all know I love Charlie Brown, and more so after this week’s debate with John Doolittle. But I really want the $$ to go where they will be most effective. This is one where, no matter who wins, we all win.
Didn’t know the contest was over, but I voted for Charlie and threw some other $$ his way, then heard upstairs that y’all had picked him after all! Wonderful news — we really need to rid DeeCee of both Doolittle and Pombo in order to make any progress on lobbyist/crime reform.

Thanks again Howie and FDL.

I live in Palm Springs and haven’t seen a Bono support sign in anyone’s yard yet (though I’m sure there must be somewhere)…but lots and lots of Roth signs. And to hear he has a serious chance..well, there is a God and she is pissed!

“Lets take our country back!”
THANK YOU, HOWARD DEAN!!!
You should really run this in the upstate New York races! *Cheap* media markets. Only open seat is NY-24 (Mike Arcuri is running).
Some of the more notable races:
NY-20: Kristen Gillibrand is running to unseat
John Sweeney
NY-23: Dr. Bob Johnson is running to unseat John McHugh
NY-25: Dan Maffei is running to unseat Walsh
NY-26: Jack Davis is running to unseat the now-infamous Tom Reynolds
NY-29: Fighting Dem Eric Massa is running to unseat “Shotgun” Randy Kuhl
It’s especially notable that the media markets for NY-29, NY-26, and NY-25 overlap substantially due to the weird district shapes (and the large geographic coverage of stations in upstate NY). Parts of all three districts can all be reached by Rochester airwaves (although Rochester proper is in Louse Slaughter’s district).
There’s also such a market (Syracuse, Oswego) covering parts of NY-23 and NY-25.
NY-20 and NY-23 are enormous districts, but are arranged so that there’s also a media market where you can hit parts of both — it’s a kind of desolate rural one, though.
Unfortunately, I listen to radio so rarely I couldn’t tell you which stations to target.
I know you’re already considering running it in Massa’s district. But if you pick the right station, a single ad buy could run it for Massa *and* Davis *and* Maffei, which would be triple-the-value in some sense!
