John Laesch is truly taking the fight to Denny Hastert — and has pulled within 10 points in the latest polling. The above YouTube is John's latest ad, and as you'll see, it uses Tom Reynolds' (R-NY) own words to point out Hastert's failures. The production values aren't top of the line (and with Laesch's budget and the lack of DCCC money, how could they be? Thanks, Rahm, heckuva job.), but it's very effective nonetheless.
And it's important to keep this on the air with Hastert now barely polling around 50%.
We've been supporting John Laesch all along (since way back in July!) because he is a great candidate and it was the right thing to do – for his district and for America. But Laesch finds himself in a much better position now than he was several weeks ago when we had him over for his first Blue America chat. If you have any change to spare, the Laesch campaign could make some very good use of it this week, so please consider visiting our Blue America page and helping them out.
But John isn't the only Blue America candidate who is kicking butt at the moment. I highlighted some new polling results yesterday for rwcole in the comments, but I wanted to be sure that everyone had a chance to see them. The full results report is at MyDD, but I wanted to highlight a few Blue America candidates for everyone:
And that's not the whole House poll — just a few that I've pulled out to highlight.
Look, the fact is that a lot of these candidates were given little to no chance, and even less funding from the Beltway crowd and the DCCC. The netroots stepped in to help them out — Howie could tell you so much more about this, and likely will, but I cannot tell you how much it pisses me off that we are not nurturing good Democratic candidates everywhere.
Of course there are limited resources, and of course you have to pick and choose where best to apply them — but when you look at Vic Wulsin, for example, and what a fantastic campaign she is running against Mean Jean Schmidt — and how much it meant for her to have had Paul Hackett run the last time around, a real, hard-fought, gutsy campaign, that truly softened up Schmidt's numbers for this challenge…you begin to see the true wisdom behind the fifty state strategy.
I highlight this not just because I would LUV to see Mean Jean defeated in the worst possible way, but also because this has been a truly good campaign — and Paul Hackett has really stepped up to the plate here and worked for Wulsin as hard as if he were running himself this time around. And he ought to be thanked profusely for it every time you see him.
We cannot win where we do not challenge — and we will never win every contest the first go around. But Vic Wulsin pulling ahead by 3 points at the moment in one of the reddest districts in Ohio is an enormous victory for the Democratic party in Ohio and nationwide, and it should serve as a lesson that when you support great candidates, you get much better results.
It's not just the House looking up, though, it's also the Senate. Chris Bowers at MyDD and Bob Geiger have some great analysis on the latest trends. At the moment, things are looking a lot closer for Democrats than we thought would be possible only a month ago.
But here's the catch — every single one of these numbers is dependent on us turning out the vote. Without a good ground game and getting our voters to the polls and casting ballots, none of this means squat.
I stopped by my local Democratic party headquarters yesterday and signed up to do some calls for GOTV efforts here on Sunday evening. And I'll likely be doing even more as time moves forward. They had my number and were supposed to have called to let me know when phonebanking got going, but I hadn't heard from them, so I made the extra effort to track them down and volunteer in person. Our local Democratic apparatus isn't incredibly well organized all the time, but this is important stuff, and I made sure to get involved because…well, dammit, I have had enough.
Please take some time today, tomorrow, this weekend…whenever…to track down a local candidate, a progressive organization, your local Democratic party leadership, whomever, and volunteer to do something to help get the vote out. Offer to drop off absentee ballot applications at local nursing homes — that can make a huge difference for folks who cannot always make it to the polls on their own steam. Offer to be a ride to the polls for voters who need one. Make some calls. Canvass some neighborhoods. Talk to friends at work about all of you going together to vote. Use early voting — which around here uses paper ballots, which is a plus in my book — and bring along some friends to also vote when you do.
Whatever it takes, let's all do the work from now until November 7th. Because we have all had more than enough. It's time for a change for the better for America.

While I appreciate that you mentioned those other polls, Linda Stender in NJ-7 has made her race tighter than some of the ones you mentioned. She’s within 7 points of Ferguson (R), the incumbent, and has a real chance of winning as she is building terrific momentum going into the final weeks. And lest we liberal types forget, she’s a woman and we need a better gender balance in Congress. While people are throwing cash at these races, throw some her way.
Good morning! Fitz!
And Dave Mejias is in a statistical dead heat with Peter King, Chair of the House Homeland Security Committee
Mornin’ Dogs,

Can I say that all the GOTV in world won’t mean a thing if they steal the election.
Even is you can’t give tie day after day. Can you take just one day off and donate to your country?
Call your local Dem County Chair and say you want to sign up to be a poll watcher on Election Day. Ask them to have the Chair of the Law Committee set up Poll Watcher training.
I have been setting up training and running election monitoring programs since 2001. I have seen them work miracles.
Amoung other things, if you have a poll watching effort, and you tell the newspapers you are going to do it (don’t say which polling places–you don’t want to tip off the bad guys) that in and of itself, will discourage shenannigans and will help to energize our base to turn out because we have made it clear how precious each vote is.
Poll watching is something that you can do even if you are old or infirm because it involves sitting there and being a witness. Depending on your state, there may be incident report forms to fill out.
If you go to the DNC website, you will find links to those states that have already established “Democratic Lawyers Councils”, if you live in those states, you can volunteer directly with them and be part of a well trained well depolyed effort.
Also “Do more than VOte” is signing up poll watchers ll over the country.

Mimi Katz pointed out over at tnh that the sheer number of GOP seats in play puts more stress on GOP cash reserves.
Dems who have not enthusiastically supported Ned tend to forget that at a minimum, he has forced Joe to soak up GOP dollars that otherwise would have gone to other GOP candidates. IIRC, Joe has outspent Ned by about 2 to 1.
Mornin’ all. Just wanted to note this from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution from this morning. It’s like Mike Luckovich was reading the “It’s Time for GOP Limbo” thread.

JF at 12 — oh man, that is hilarious!
Way OT, but not really.
I don’t know enough about the situation to comment knowledgeably on it, but:
Sara Evans of Dancing with the Stars is leaving because she’s divorcing her husband who is running for congress, Craig Schelske. Supposedly his behavior, something awful he’s done has brought it on. Maybe you FDLers know about Delay’s involvement in getting people to vote for her b/c she’s a good Republican, etc etc and Jerry Springer is the devil.
I think her abrupt departure has something to do with the Hammer’s influence and yet more bad publicity for the rePukes. Anybody know more?
Just finished watching part 2 of KO’s piece on Tempting Faith. I don’t think it is as much a bombshell as it is a “no shit” moment. The evangelicals can just dismiss it with their tired claim of media bias. They’re as myopic as Raider fans.
Put it in bold, Christy:
And it’s happening now, not just on November 7. Right now, we need to identify solid progressive voters. Right now, if they are absentee voters, we need to make sure they vote when they get their ballot. Right now, we need to make plans for covering every precinct on election day.
Now’s the time. Right now.
“If the Democrats retake the House next month it would unquestionably make life harder for the president’s two final years.”
Boy howdy!!!
“While cautioning against premature wishful thinking, all the signs are that a significant change in the balance of power between the two parties is on the cards on November 7 – possibly on the scale of, though in the opposing direction to, the Republican revolution of 1994 under Newt Gingrich.”
From the Guardian 10-13-06
Christy, you forgot Arcuri: he’s ahead.
Sorry, Christy,
I scanned the list of races in your post really fast and didn’t realize you already had Mejias.
I am amazed he came this far. He started WAY late because there was a different candidate in th erace who dropped out and Mejias came in as a replacement.
So, he had to scramble to race $ and hire staff. He has put together a pretty good organization in almost no time with very little help from Rahm.
Nobel Peace Prize announced – from the WaPo:
Goes to show what a little creative thinking outside the box can do to reshape the world. Think of this as honoring the economic version of the Roots Project.
Lots of speculation around the candidates for this award, and you can make a great case for many of them, but the Nobel committee need not hang their head for choosing this one.
Pach at 18 — I’m sure I missed several. Our heater went out last night, and The Peanut and I are sitting here in our popsicle of a house waiting for the repair guy. Brrrrrr…..
Good Mornin’ All,
Christy,
really get your message and LOVE the suggestion about Absentee Ballots and nursing homes
And . . .
it’s Bushworld, so I’m having a reverse rant –
It’s here, it’s really, finally here – that shitstorm we’ve been waiting for, all that hurry up and wait everytime a shoe dropped with no consequences is GONE – it’s gone from a hit a week to a hit a day in TradMed – the bad news for them is hemmoraghing – and the best part ?!?!? think our own Sharkbabe summed it up with perfect hilarity:
/rant
please, I may need meds I’m so giddy, but I know there is plenty of work ahead, in fact someone in the threads last night pointed out this isn’t a simple run up to Nov or 08, but a daily effort to take it all back and keep it – but sweet tomata I’ll have a spring in my step doing it!
I just noticed, cuz he’s kinda cute.

excellent point!
while i don’t have much money to contribute, i do have good walking shoes…. so, i just sent an email to volunteer@nedlamont.com find out where i can go to help canvass this weekend.
besides – i enthusiastically support ned!
Christy, please don’t forget the Kirsten Gillibrand race against frat-boy John Sweeney in NY20. She’s running in a historically Republican gerrymandered district which stretches from Poughkeepsie on the east side of the Hudson River north and west to the Canadian border, cleverly skirting urban areas such as Albany and the City of Poughkeepsie. In the southern part of the district the network media market is New York City which means television ads are prohibitively expensive. The biggest challenge has been getting name recognition and she has done a heroic job of travelling this huge area all the while enduring the personal slanders which are the only platform/strategy of the Sweeney campaign.
Josh Marshall highlights the race in this morning’s TPM post:
talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/010339.php
Christy – about you being in a cold house, my heat went out yesterday afternoon too. Spent about an hour trying to find a repair guy, only to find out all of our city was without heat.
Redcross came in to offer shelters — but then the utility company said you had to be home to let the repair guy in to retart all the furnaces and water heaters. So stay home, freeze and let him in, or go to the warm shelters.
My outfit lastnight was pretty darn peculiar. I have a small space heater and my cat and I spent the night curled up as close as we could.
And Minnesota is very cold right now.
this is like the funniest stewar ever…well, maybe not ever but gotz to c it

I have previously posted this video ad for Claire McCaskill running for Senate. She seems to have closed the difference with Talent who is spending money like a drunk Bush brother. This ad is
making a difference and Republicans are doing their best to “swift boat” wounded Iraq war vet JOSH LANSDALE who has been denied VA care. But the VA hospital has been called the worst in the city anyway. McCaskill needs to get this ad back on television.

OT – chimpy on CNN about signing some port security bill thingy.
Go Larry! That’s absolutely amazing about Larry Kissell, with an awesome lead outside of the margin of error! Especially given where he started. But no sitting back — we’ve got to keep pressing. I’ve been making phone calls and will canvassing in a GOTV effort for Larry in the 8th district starting next week. You know, it’s really been reading FDL and Glenn Greenwald in particular, and other blogs as well, that convinced me I had to get personally involved in trying to turn things around in our country. Not that I’m responsible for this amazing poll result! But I’ll enjoy it just the same. Thanks, Christy and FDL!
OT – chimpy on CNN – we learned lessons on 9-11
-tripled homeland security funding
-we are the bestesterest country protectors eveh
OT – chimpy on CNN – act provides funds to protect ports from attack.
bill provides funds to improve technology for cargo inspection and increase physical security. if private shippers provide their own security, they can have expedited passage through our ports (that doesnt sound good to me)
OT – chimpy on CNN – “we’re gonna protect our ports. we’re gonna protect our homeland.”
presser ends with chimpy signing bill.

Targetting that lizard King should be a netroots priority. I will send Mejias some scratch.
I’m going over to Charlie Brown’s hq to work today. I started out working for Brown because Doolittle is so awful, but now I’m for Charlie Brown because he’s such a great person.
Two examples: In his debate with John Doolittle the other night, Doolittle (who seemed on the verge of a nervous breakdown) kept accusing Charlie of all kinds of things, being a liberal, etc.
1. Shorter Doolittle: You belong to the ACLU!! Brown: The ACLU’s mission is to protect the Constitution. Yes, I belong — why don’t you?
2. Shorter Doolittle: You support gay marriage! Brown: I support equality.
A lot of times, politicians waffle about gay marriage and say they support civil unions, etc. Charlie Brown didn’t do any of that. He said he is for equality.
Anyway, the above poll has Charlie down 8 points and it’s going to take GOTV to get him over the hump. So there’s more work to do.
Joe Lieberman is an unapologetic supporter OF terrorism in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Gaza gulag.

SurveyUSA has a new poll out for the MO Senate race, with McCaskill’s lead growing from one point in their last poll to nine right now. Lots of speculation among the pollster-pundits, trying to guess how much is temporary (due to Foley) and how much will stick, come November.
Among the highlights:
- McCaskill leads among women by 18 points. Among men, Talent leads by just one, which is down from a 15 point lead a month ago.
- McCaskill leads in urban areas, Talent in rural, and McCaskill leads in the suburbs.
- Most of the movement in the poll comes from independent (non Dem/Rep) voters, who swung from plus 12 for Talent in Sept to plus 13 for McCaskill now.
- The MO Stem Cell initiative seems to be helping Claire, as Talent has opposed it but it is looking very good for passage (57-27%). Lots of folks are making up their minds on this now, and breaking toward supporting the measure to allow stem cell research. This may indicate that the growing support for Claire among independents is related to folks now deciding on the stem cell measure.
All in all, lots of good news. Of course, as Christy said above, none of this matters if we don’t get the voters to the polls – and as LHP added, nor if the votes don’t get tallied properly.
cbl and Balrog — Thanks for the weepers. I have my George Jones greatest hits on here at work and tears in the corner of my eyes…. Hope my students don’t want any sage advice today. Primarily, as Prarie Sunshine says, for our next generation — tears for the living.

I forget where I saw it last night or early this morning, but when Ralston was hired her salary was in the mid 70,000s. When she left, it was mid 150,000s. Nice work if you can get it, indeed (with apologies to Ira Gershwin).
good morning, all… did anyone just see the ad on CNN where a bunch of people walk up and ask pointed questions of a shrub? with the tagline being, “You won’t get too many answers from this bush” (then a pic of Bush the preznit comes on) and then, “you won’t get one from this Bush either. Vote for change.”
Something called the September Fund… very nice, very effective ad…
OMG!
Wulsin is LEADING Mean Jean? MY Mean JEAN? If that is CLOSE to the truth it is phenomenal. This district went 78-28 Republican just four years ago and when Paul Hackett came within four points two years ago it was written off as a special election fluke when the Dems fielded a charismatic, gun-totin’ Iraqi war veteran, none of which is Victoria Wulsin.
John Murtha is campaigning for Wulsin in what may be the most satsifying campaign stop ever.

25 Minutes to Go – Johnny Cash
Well they’re building a gallows outside my cell I’ve got 25 minutes to go
And the whole town’s waitin’ just to hear me yell I’ve got 24 minutes to go
Well they gave me some beans for my last meal I’ve got 23 minutes to go
But nobody asked me how I feel I’ve got 22 minutes to go
Well I sent for the governor and the whole dern bunch with 21 minutes to go
And I sent for the mayor but he’s out to lunch I’ve got 20 more minutes to go
Then the sheriff said boy I gonna watch you die got 19 minutes to go
So I laughed in his face and I spit in his eye got 18 minutes to go
Now hear comes the preacher for to save my soul with 13 minutes to go
And he’s talking bout’ burnin’ but I’m so cold I’ve 12 more minutes to go
Now they’re testin’ the trap and it chills my spine 11 more minutes to go
And the trap and the rope aw they work just fine got 10 more minutes to go
Well I’m waitin’ on the pardon that’ll set me free with 9 more minutes to go
But this is for real so forget about me got 8 more minutes to go
With my feet on the trap and my head on the noose got 5 more minutes to go
Won’t somebody come and cut me loose with 4 more minutes to go
I can see the mountains I can see the skies with 3 more minutes to go
And it’s to dern pretty for a man that don’t wanna die 2 more minutes to go
I can see the buzzards I can hear the crows 1 more minute to go
And now I’m swingin’ and here I go-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o!
Wow,
Bush has been in charge for six years and it seems like sixty!
If we don’t take the House… I’m not sure

#14 the Sara Evans, Craig Schelske divorce looks pretty messy according to google news. What is it with Repubs? OC, the September Fund is a 527. It’s just an amazing ad. Mr. NJP sent me a link yesterday while I was at the office, and I asked several coworkers over to see it. Then last night, Mr. NJP showed me the trailer and first two installments of the 101st Fighting Keyboarders, told me the great news about Claire McGaskill in MO, and we talked about the two peace groups he’s joined, and what we can do to help Ned.
Keep warm, Redd. Hope your repairman comes soon. Know that we’re working to make the Peanut and all the kids proud of America again.

Coz at 58 — that’s actually good news, I think. A Ch. 11 filing gives the new owners an opportunity to start with a fresh business plan and a little leverage with the prior owners’ creditors that they wouldn’t otherwise have had. From a business standpoint, this makes a lot of sense, and it shows me that the new ownership plans on running it as a corporation and not as a hobby — which is a VERY good sign, in my mind.
The party of family values? Give me a break. This is beyond the pale, but little about the personal standards of GOPers in Congress right now surprises me anymore.

shit. imho, for all it’s flaws, we really need AAR.
one thing i did a while ago (don’t know if this is helpful or not) was to sign up for the “premium” podcast…. it’s only $11/month or $70/year. programs show up in itunes a couple of hours after broadcast, and without comercials. i don’t listen that much but when i do, i like to avoid the comercials and i wanted to support the effort.

Schadenfreude, a German word meaning “pleasure taken from someone else’s misfortune.”
Weltschmerz, from the German meaning world-pain or world-weariness.
Zeitgeist a German expression that means “the spirit (Geist) of the time (Zeit).”

#72, it’s not just that they’re supposed to be faith-based Republicans. As a candidate on a or the highest-rated national tv show, who Delay was pushing down people’s throats, they’re uniquely positioned to call yet more attention of the hypocrisy of the party to our ‘values’ voters.
Bound to keep more of them home in Tennessee and Oregon.

More good news IMO — Charlotte Observer reporting today that Republican challenger to Democratic incumbant representative John Spratt in South Carolina has had his funding slashed by two-thirds — some $600,000 — because the Repugs are channelling their funds to embattled incumbents. Challenger had been running some unpleasant ads — maybe this will be the end of those.

Does the Pentagon even have an IG these days? I know it quit having a general counsel a long long time back.
Odd how that Pentagon investigation of the death of Lloyd and the more recent, more public and using actual evidence and not Presidential nannernanners investigation in Britain reached such different conclusions. Illegal killing, commanders should stand trial – what are the Brits thinking?
Then there’s Canada, with some goofy judge saying they have to be careful sharing info with the US since it is a state sponsor of terror and all.
Italy, going around and indicting people, US people – who do they think they are? And as our ambassador told them, they have no business expecting Americans to follow the law in Italy when Italy won’t spend money buying perfectly good US cluster bombs and planes.
Germany – which has now sent names of US agents involved with el-Masri (and yeah, apparently they have names, aliases and ‘other’ info) to ask that the be barred from Germany as a partial safeguard against having them commit other crimes. But the pressure is still on the prosecutor there to file real charges (and gosh, he seems to have real names …)

Well, it’s looking more and more like North Korea’s nuke test didn’t go so well after all:
http://www.nasdaq.com/aspxcont…..8.htm&
“Experts and governments have been unable to confirm North Korea’s claim of a successful nuclear test. Japanese planes have scooped up air samples, but also detected no radiation. Seismic data show there was an explosion at the claimed test site but is inconclusive whether the blast was caused by a nuclear detonation.”
Hmm, North Korea still doesn’t have nukes?
I blame Clinton.
New thread, gang!
Jerry McNerney (CA-11) is the epitome of the grassroots-powered candidate. He ran two years ago when no one else would challenge the corrupt and anti-environmental incumbant Richard Pombo, and did well… but lost. He was one of the first DFA-endorsed candidates in ‘04, and DFA groups from all over the Bay area have been the backbone of his challenge this year… and independent polling has confirmed twice that he’s running neck-and-neck with Pombo – if not a little ahead.
McNerney’s been endorsed by the conservative newspaper the Modesto Bee… and just was endorsed by the Pleasonton Indpendent which said:
This is one we can win… and it’s been entirely a People-Powered and NetRoots powered campaign thus far. I’m a case in point – I’m president of the DFA chapter in my county, and we endorsed Jerry in the primary. I personally donated some graphic design work to the campaign… and when it came time to redesign his website after the primary victory, I was hired by the campaign to develop and maintain their website. The campaign is driven by volunteers and staffers who are, like myself, grassroots activists.
I’m posting this as a private individual – this is not a message from the campaign… and I’m here enthusiastically supporting McNerney not because I’m working for his campaign: I’m working for his campaign because I so enthusiastically support him.
George Bush just raised an enormous amount of money for Pombo at a fundraiser in his district: Pombo’s war-chest dwarfs McNerney’s. I guess I’m here to remind y’all about how important this race is… and how winnable it is… but it does need netroots support.
Mary, LMAO.
CHS, until the repair guy comes, may want to try filling the crock pot with water, turn it on high.
In CT 3 GOP Reps were thought to be vulnerable-Shays, Johnson and Simmons. The most recent polling indicates that only Simmons is currently behind.
In each of these districts the Dems enjoy a registration advantage and Bush’s approval numbers are below 35%.
What gives? Is Lieberman screwing this up?
What caused Shays, who has always seemed moderate and is up 6 points, to go off on Teddy K yesterday?
Hey, don’t forget NY-19, where Dem John Hall has been kicking butt and taking names. The district was recently upgraded to “leans Republican” by the DCCC, check out what’s going on here…
