Back in the day … when I was working full time with campaigns, this was the song that kept me going … from polling place to headquarters and back again. In those days, our campaigns were more symbolic – we knew we wouldn’t win but we kept going, working to add new voices to the political scene in our city.
Now, as we approach the ’06 midterms, we have a chance to win some, maybe win a lot – and our voices are being heard all over the map. So this post is a celebration – a pause in the work to say “WooHoo!” to all the firepups who are showing up and getting the work done at campaign offices and phonebanks, proving that netroots don’t just read about politics, we do!
Today I got an email from the folks at the DNC and they would like to celebrate the work that you are doing – the door-knocking, phone banking, lit dropping everyday work of bringing change in this year’s election.
And as the press sec. for FDL, I’d like to celebrate your work too – as we talk to the media, I’d love to have your stories to share with reporters around the country.
So along with taking a minute to cheer the efforts of everyone here, I’d like you to ask you to send us a link to your favorite photos of your GOTV work – you can post it here or send it over to media dot firedoglake at gmail dot com – or you can send it directly to Tracy and the great web team at the DNC at demsinthefield at dnc dot org.
And if you don’t have any pics yet, grab that camera the next time you’re heading out to hit the streets and help us to create a record of all the amazing field work done by FDL readers this year.

Siun!!!
Hey Valley Girl!
Extra thanks to Christy for talking me through WordPress … phew!
SIUN!
waving to Coz … so got any good pics?
It’s not my intention to hijack this thread, and I won’t be around to read or respond, but yesterday morning my three-year-old son was diagnosed with Leukemia.
It’s Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia, which is emminently treatable, and has at least a 90% survivability rate. A far cry from the 60s, when such a diagnosis was essentially a death sentence. Tomorrow he starts what will ultimately be three years of treatment, with a spinal tap and bone marrow biopsy.
This is on top of my wife’s moving out a week ago. At least, as parents, we are united.
I am well, and tell you this because FDL is a community that has given me comfort and strength. My son needs that now, as do I. Please keep Esten in your hearts, light a candle, say a prayer, or donate to the Leukemia foundation. Do as I have learned to do in adversity, and turn outwards instead of inwards.
I will be in and out of the hospital for the next several days, also taking care of our six year-old daughter when my wife is with our son. Sorry I won’t be able to read your well wishes, but can feel them even now.
Tom
Yay, siun!
Great clip, great persdpective and motivation.
I love Jimmy Cliff. And I miss Bob Marley.
Tom – we’ll light a candle and keep you all in our thoughts!
Thank Pach – Jimmy always reminds me that we can do it … just got keep at it!
Tommy yum – my unending love and prayers for you and your family.
OK Kiddo – me too. I got to see Jimmy Cliff last year and chatted with him a little – he’s still going strong and singing about how we can make a better world.
Wish Bob was still here to do the same.
Don’t have any pics yet, and am chiefly an Agonista (tho I read FDL several times a day), but I am volunteering 4 days a week at the local dem HQ, phone banking, data entry, scut work but work that has to be done nonetheless. I woke up one morning and realized that just voting was not enough for me anymore.
Tommy Yum,
You and your family are on my prayer list.
Suin,
I’ll need to take my digital camera when I start phone banking. Thanks for the idea.
Tommy– What sad news- Can’t imagine hearing that about my child.
I was diagnosed with Luekemia years ago and with no ill effects to date- so please stay positive.
Clean up needed last thread #131. Lieberman’s Willy apparently.
Scott – that’s great – thank you for your work. And Agonista or not, take some photos and share them … this feels like a historic year and we should record it.
I know I’d love to have photos from some campaigns past ..
tommy yum @ 5
Tom,
I am so very, very sorry. It’s so difficult when life piles it on. As you mentioned, the prognosis for children diagnosed with Leukemia is much, much better than it was even 10 years ago. It will be rough but I’m sure you son will pull through. (I have a niece who was diagnosed with Leukemia and treated 40 years ago and today she is married and happy with two beautiful children.)
We are all pulling for you and your family.
tommy yum @ 5
love headed your way, tommy! many blessings, too.
Siun,
It must be hell to share the same title with Tony Snow. He and Baghdad Bob make quite the pair, but no one would ever confuse you with either of them.
Tommy Yum – all love and good thoughts for you all.
Siun – on the Ned campaign trail in CT
tommy yum – thoughts and prayers with you and your family, especially little esten.
tommy yum @
5
You’ll read them later, and I hope be comforted by them.
In all the chaos that the next few weeks will bring, remember that you and yours are held in our hearts. Late at night, or sitting in the hospital, or in the middle of the day, know that you are not alone.
Peace,
Peterr
Suin,
The campaign pictures I would contribute would be the day we marched with Ned in the Labor Day parade. There are some great pics on his web site.
Also – I’m thrilled to announce that the Republicans in Connecticut have finally gotten fed up with Lieberman and are fighting back. They have set up a new web site in support of Schlesinger per below:
Here are some excerpts:
Why did we start Whose Side Are You On?
We started whosesideareyouon.org as a direct response to the White House’s abandonment of Connecticut Republican Alan Schlesinger. You can learn more about Alan on his own website.
It wasn’t just that Republicans in Washington – led by Karl Rove – made a conscious effort to distance themselves from Alan, but that they did it in order to support Democrat Joe Lieberman, a childish career politician for whom his own primary’s results weren’t good enough. Lieberman is the guy who said that he wouldn’t let his own party’s primary results stand – that, in essence, the people’s collective voice was a trivial annoyance to be swatted aside like so many bees.
(continued)
http://whosesideareyouon.org/
—————
If Schlesinger gets even 10% of the vote, it’s all over for Joe.
Peterr … I sure hope not! but Tony and BB sure are good at keeping a straight face as they spin … I couldn’t pull that off!
My thoughts and prayers are with you, Tommy. So sorry to hear you’re at one of those points in life when, as Garrison Keillor puts it, “life swamps your boat.”
I know you’ll prevail, though, and I look forward to seeing your voice back here again soon. Please keep us posted on your son’s progress.
Dale in Alabama @ 25
beautifully said, Dale.
There is some heat being generated starting with a campaign ad with vet Josh Lansdale for McCaskill called a “fraud” by Talent. The ad is worth watching. Josh was supposed to see primary care physician within 30 days but did not. I think the ad is true but MENTAL ILLNESS IS A CONSEQUENCE OF COMBAT-especially
with this bloodbath “subhuman nightmare” for the neoconservatives Iraq money machine. Might be a “swift boat”
—————–
The U.S. Senate race in Missouri — relatively calm for most of the fall — erupted into an emotional exchange Wednesday involving a veteran of the Iraq war.
The veteran, Josh Lansdale, had been featured in a campaign commercial for Democrat Claire McCaskill. In the ad, which is no longer on the air, Lansdale said he sought treatment from the Department of Veterans Affairs for an injured ankle and post-traumatic stress disorder but was unable to see a doctor for six months because of budget cuts. See the video at

Siun at 2 — any time! Have gotten my new iPod out of the box and am installing software. Wheeeee! (Mr. ReddHedd got me a new video iPod and a BOSE docking station for my birthday — but he couldn’t wait and gave it to me early. This is better than Christmas!)
Tommy- I do hope you get a chance to read the good thoughts for you and yours. I am thinking of you, and sending out hope and love. I thank you for sharing your news with us- such an incredibly kind thing that you have done for us. Much love, VG
Christy has the best husband ever … just want to testify to that!
Kathryn in MA @ 20
Hey Kathryn – You took great pictures that day. A good friend of mine is the guy holding the sign in picture # 3. I’m in picture # 12, partially obscured by my friend Ken, listening to Ned.
It was surreal to be in the same parade as Lieberman, but loved being there in support of Ned. Talk about energy! Had been part of the Kerry contingent in the same parade in 2004, but just not the same experience.
Kathryn’s pics are great – hope everyone has taken a look. I’ll point them out to Tracy and see if we can get some on the DNC site.
Tommy at 5 — if there is anything — ANYTHING — that you need from us, you let us know. Hugs and lots and lots of love from here. Pardon me while I go take a peek at my baby girl…
tommy, your son will be in my prayers.
And woo hooo! to everyone out working (or in working on the phones) for your local candidates.
Tommy, If there is anything I can do — in addition to my bestest wishes — please ask. I know you would do anything to keep Esten from whatever hardship you can like I would do anything to prevent Little Imm from ever having any pain in his life. And I know you would help me if you were able. So I am available for pretty much any thing you need. Is bone marrow transplant on the agenda and will you be seeking donors?
{{{Candle of recovery}}}
Love, Imm.
Tommy – Hang in there! Stay positive. My best to you and yours.
Rereading your post, the line “Today I got an email from the folks at the DNC and they would like to celebrate the work that you are doing” leaped out at me. Not to knock all the FDL door-knocking, but does the DNC take to heart any of the . . . ahem . . . constructive criticism that we offer them around here?
Just wondering.
not so much for suin’s purposes… but to share some of the fun, here are some CT canvassing for ned pics:
my least favorite – just a pic of a long driveway. except it was the sunday before primary day, hot as hell and i was canvassing in a neigborhood with VERY long driveways.
a favorite – “queen megan” on primary tuesday. actually megan perry, ned’s the out of state volunteer coordinator.
my most favorite – last saturday back in CT, when ned stopped by the volunteers to say “thanks”, i got this pic of him with me, Kathyrn_in_MA and scarecrow.
some more from CT here. i don’t have any pics of phone banking… (that’s a good thing)
p.s. Kathyrn_in_MA takes the best pics!
If we get lots of good pics, I’m gonna suggest maybe use this for the slide show background music.

Tommy, my best wishes are with you and your family, and a beautiful candle burns even now.
immanentize @ 35
ditto, and
Imm, this might be the most incredibly beautiful and heartfelt post that I have ever read.
Whoa, Tommy, what a shock. Prayers said, and just know you’ll be able to provide the strength and optimism your family needs through this trial. I feel for you, man.
OT – British Army chief calls for Iraq pullout
On Larry King, Andrew Sullivan just said the question voters should ask themselves is: Have you had enough?
Selise – love that picture of you and the gang with Ned in Manchester last Saturday. He looks so relaxed. I worry about him – always running from one place to another. He is going flat out.
Just an FYI – and wondering if other Lamont volunteers have the inside story. I’m seeing lots of blog comments to the effect that the Dem party asked Lamont to back off in August and first part of September while they “attempted” to talk Lieberman out of running. Apparently they didn’t try hard enough, or weren’t effective – but that explains the campaign “black out period” after the primary.
If Ned loses – the Dem party leadership has a lot to answer for.
LindaR @ 45
Don’t forget that this week’s Blue America with Howie will include selecting a Had Enough Target district and Jacqrat will buy us some great media there to send everyone the Had Enough song from our own Tommy Yum!
Peterr … I think one of the best ways we can show the DNC where we stand is to show them that we do stand up, day after day, for progressive candidates and we’d like them to stand with us.
I think a nice batch of photos would be a great way to communicate that …

Tommy, if somehow you see this or someone knows your email and wishes to relay it, sending this message from a family who live with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. We’ve done a lot of research on this disease and similar forms, ALL and a whole lot of other acronyms for various types. One of the most helpful websites we found is clltopics.org. The website owners also live with cll and their scientific backgrounds bring the complex medical papers, etc. into understandable contexts.
Another site we recently learned of is nccn.org, which lists the protocols that are standard and prioritized by peer review for all sorts of cancers.
For fellow pups, the organization is The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. And support stem cell research….this is why it matters.
Tommy, again, we’ll keep your little one in our thoughts and hearts. And if there’s any way we can help, with resource information or just giving you the comfort of knowing how many of us are out here caring…please let us know how we can help.
tommy yum — sending positive thoughts and energy to you and yours. Keep the faith; we have been blessed to have a family member pull through and survive after chemotherapy for leukemia, has been with us for 15-plus years, keeping us buckled up with laughter whenever we are with him.
For us FirePups, this is an example of the personal reasons we have for winning in less than 4 weeks, and again in 2008. We must regain power to restore funding and brainpower to agencies that rely on science, like NIH and CDC, so that they can work more effectively towards successful biomedical research and chronic disease management.
It’s for people like Tommy and Esten that we must get out the vote.
We’ll get your backs, Tommy, you and Esten.

the only thing i know is what i read in tim’s diary over at dkos:
Oh foo, Siun; we’ve been so damned busy with GOTV stuff that we’ve never bothered to take pictures.
We’ve done a lot of campaign-related stuff for which we’ve taken photos, but not GOTV.
Best ones also are the ones that include my kids — and there’s no way I can post them. Wish I could; the one of Governor Jennifer Granholm shaking my son’s hand is incredible.
I’ll try to take pics tomorrow when we do a rally for homecoming.

dab, wish i knew who you were then . . . I got stuck sticking to Leiberliar the whole parade because I had a video camera so i couldn’t march with the gang. Swannie asks and can’t say no.
We’ve got to turn this boat around so that the folks who aren’t tuned in in CT start to “get it.”
Spoke to a good friend today whose daughter is a UConn recent grad still doing some work there. Trying to get her daughter to start riling up her friends for Ned.

Prairie Sunshine! Was looking for you. I got my CD cabinet today in the mail and I love it. It’s a bit smaller than it looks in the catalog photo, but the construction is lovely and solid — we ordered the walnut finish, and it is absolutely gorgeous. I think you were looking at the same cabinet — and I can give it two thumbs up from our household. :)
Prairie Sunshine – I’ll forward your message to Tommy’s email.

Tommy, the NZ candle is lit in for Esten and the whole family. Some day, you and Esten can come here and see the land of the Hobbits. Meanwhile, there are stories to read him and tell him of the noble fight for goodness and honor. He’s going to like the stories you tell him that will carry him through these times.
And thank you, too, for your comment, about turning outwards versus inwards in adversity. I needed that today and you supplied my need so graciously, even in the time of your own need.
tommy yum — best wishes for your little guy and to you and family as you work through this. We’re all thinking of you.

I’ve become involved in my first Congressional campaign this year. I’m working as a volunteer for a fighting Dem, opposing an incumbent Republican. What’s really surprised me is the lack of an historical, institutional approach to the basics – the how-tos of initiating a volunteer base, canvassing, phone banking, and structuring a campaign. The paid and volunteer staff developed approaches along the way using computer tools available – listservs, wikis, calendars, etc. But there were better ways, and often my suggestions were implemented, but too late to avoid duplication of efforts, and occasionally (okay, more than occasionally) pissing off donors, supporters and volunteers. Our candidate is a good candidate with a good shot at winning, and it’s been a great experience, but as a volunteer I’ve taken on enormous responsibilities, often after work for several hours each day. We should pull together and do a “Campaigns for Smarties” book or something. Anyone else have any thoughts about this?
selise,
been sending you e-mails with no answer. Are you getting them or are they caught in the filters again?
Rayne @ 51
I couldn’t say it better, but I do want to put in a show of support for Tommy’s wife in this, too. We got ALL Y’ALL’S backs! XOXOXOX [BigAssHug]
selise, dab from CT — OMIGOD.
They stepped on Lamont. There was a 2 or 3 day window, TOPS, where they should have talked Lieberman off the ledge after the primary. Any longer than that would have played into Rove’s hands. We could smell it here in fly-over country, but we had no data to confirm it.
This is EXACTLY why the Democratic Party needed to be taken over from the inside out (and exactly why candidates like Lamont need to continue kicking ass and taking names). I only wish we’d had another year to get the job done, gutting and replenishing the party; some states have made enormous strides, but clearly some areas need help. I suspect this is a multi-state issue, too, with NY figuring largely into the equation.
Trust NO entrenched power, anywhere in the food chain, unless they have consistently delivered. Who ever was supposed to handle the suicide hotline is now marked with a bull’s eye, the word NEXT in the center of the target.
No matter what happens, we MUST do a post-mortem after Election Day so that we can line up the next line of attack.
I know Tommy’s not reading but if Suin could pass this along:
Cedars-Sinai or UCLA Med Center, OUTSTANDING for ALL. Also Doc T has onconlogist friends and will enquire. When I told him he said, “Good, well okay. This is very , very curable”
There was a “Politics for Dummies” book back in 1996 but the author then got trounced in the Democratic primary by progressive Julia Carson. She was no dummy. Oh well …
Tommy-
Your family is in my prayers.
For what it is worth, I had to have spinal taps when I was a kid. I remember distinctly that it is very important to stay horizontal and still after the spinal tap in order to avoid a headache, but otherwise spinal taps aren’t too bad.
Please keep us posted on Esten’s progress.
Hey, thanks for the heads-up, Christy@58! I came here tonight originally because I saw this in a WaPoo homepage teaser for Howard Kurtz’ column:
whaddya think, guys…do the words Fox News and sensibility belong in the same stratosphere, much less the same sentence?
My heart aches for Tommy and Esten and his big sister and mom. The stress for caregivers can be daunting sometimes. Fortunately, great strides have been made in leukemia care in recent years…despite the Rethugs best efforts to shut down … ah, hell, the concept of a man whose sister died of leukemia during his own childhood doing everything in his power to strangle, starve and shut down scientific progress leaves me so sad, I can’t begin to express it.
Get out our vote!!!!
Wonder if Christy and Jane are lurking tonight — if either/both are, I hope they’ve caught the post at DailyKos by Greg Palast.
Rehashed material, but certainly gives pause as to the other reasons why Plame/Brewster Jennings were outed…

IIRC Dodd was supposed to do the deed. Presumably JLie wouldn’t let him in the room. Dodd and Schumer and Reid and the bunch didn’t try hard enough. Had they said then and there that there would be no committees, no chairmanships, no nothing, it might have made a difference.
Rat bastards.
Rayne at 73…I can’t find the Palast post. Is there a link?

I’ve written many, many posts about my dismay with the American Taliban Jesus pimps and their symbiotic relationship with the Republican party. I never published them, and deleted them all. It is very difficult to strike the proper tone about faith, and false prophets without seeming like a godless heathen. I’ll put it together someday. The main thing is that doing these things in God’s name stains the cloth of the entire idea of faith, and until the church casts out these false prophets, they toil under the same cloud.

Ha! Well, the whole thing was lovely. Rosalind/Ann is beautiful — red hair, sultry, intelligent. We decided that blonde is the new red, however, and felt a little diminished in our red hair (but only a little).
Norman Lear started the whole thing off — I didn’t realize it had been 25 years since the founding of People For the American Way (in-the-knowers call it “People For”). I was very glad that I am a PFAW member, because by the end of the evening I was incredibly impressed with and proud of the organization.
Jane was gracious and lovely and funny, and Howie was a real dear. Ann/Roslind and I sat at a table next to Jane and Howie’s table. Our table was packed with people Howie invited, young hot up-and-comers in different fields, from guys that make Google work to a future fashion designer whose gone all political on her friends and associates. My admiration for Howie, the way he nurtures what he wants more of in the world, expanded that night.
Ambassador Wilson gave a great speech, Christine Lahti and Tommy Schlamme were funny, and Green Day was Green Day. Rob Reiner was funny and smart — oh, how I wish he were running for governor! The guy who supposedly is running was there too.
The event was in the ballroom, and it felt like being at the Golden Globes or something like that. Being around so many talented people who actively pursue their dreams and give back to the world was an inspiration.
To all young people with talent and desire: Don’t wait. Go for it now, there is no other time. I waited to become who I am, and now I’m 53 and just finishing my first novel. I’ve written a lot of great songs but never had them published. I am only now taking acting lessons.
Don’t do what I did. Don’t not do what you must do to be yourself. That is the DISH from my view of PFAW party.
And as for the SUITE, there wasn’t much partying, but the bed was so comfortable and the bathtub — wow.

I just emailed Tim Mahoney’s Campaign Manager to invite him (Adam Nashband)and Tim to stop by…I had met them both a month ago and emailed them some pics that I took of Tim and his staff. Waiting to see…
OT – holy crap. via war and piece, from newsweek:

bless you, Tommy Yum, and your baby and family.
Love Jamaica, Jamaicans, Jimmy Cliff and Bob Marley.
One love.
Peace.

HopeSpringsATurtle, I think so. Is he a young guy with dark hair who is going back to Washington after the elections? If he’s the one I’m thinking of, I think I got a picture of him at the Wesley Clark event. Is he in there?
tommy yum,

Late Night with Trex is up now! see you all there!
Thank you siun! It IS the perfect name for her – it means “at peace/in harmony” – fits her to a Tee. When we lived in Baltimore we could hop a USAir to Montego and be there in 3 hours. Went 3 times in 3 years, then we moved out west. Haven’t yet found the time or money to take Irie but it’s in the long-term plans. God I love Negril!
Angie, have had Sangster’s Rum Cream? Can only get it in Jamaica. Just one more thing you’d love…
Oilfieldguy @ 110
One way I’ve pondered to tackle this topic is to document how these “poor folks” have been repeatedly taken advantage of by holy-rollin’ con-artists over the last couple hundred years (or is that the last couple thousand years?).
The current batch of Repug “captured souls” is but a Rovian re-discovery of the vulnerability/susceptibility of these folks.
And these “poor folks” may also be the very same slaves to authoritarianism as described in “Conservatives Without Conscience” by John Dean.
Sacrificing one’s free will and placing all decision-making in the hands of “The Leader” works for religious fanaticism just as well as for political demagogues.
One note on my use of the words “poor folks”.
I know of no science to support this, but I have the strongest “feeling” that there are (and have always been) a group of people among us who believe that they are somehow literally incapable of living/surviving without others making decisions and providing guidance for them.
They are always around and if one can motivate them (capture them), they are incredibly consistent in following orders.
Stuff like “vote this way”, “hate this person/group/country”, etc.
Rat … try this spot … much much quieter than negril but … well …irie!
http://www.treasurebeach.net/guide/default.cfm
we stayed at Jake’s and it’s my heart home – Negril felt like a big city after TB but was wonderful too … 3dives for dinner, sala driving us to the waterfall… nothing better
rat bastahd @ 137
Nooo, I haven’t! I have been to Jamaica so many times and now have a very good reason to return! Thank you!
(pssst– what is it??)
Negril is awesome, stark and truly lovely if you meet the regular folks…
Rayne @ 68
Totally agree – we MUST do a post mortem.
Lamont was in a no win situation right after the primary. He had to go kiss Hillary’s ring. He had to meet with the Washington insiders who would just as soon stab him in the back than give him a helping hand. They told him to back off so they could ease Joe out – he did and now he has a seven point deficit to make up.
I’m particularly peeved at Dodd – and have told him so on numerous occassions. As Joe Conason said, Lieberman is proving the CT Dems’ point by his selfish, unprincipled behavior. I’d say the same goes for the Dem insider establishment.
Truly, if by some horrible twist of fate Lieberman wins – I think all CT dems who supported Lamont and were betrayed should switch their affiliation from Dem to Unaffiliated in protest – preferably all on the same day – or in the same week.
Betrayal has consequences.
That having been said – the campaign is really picking up steam. The Lieberman campaign is trying to bog it down again with the comment made by the former mayor of New Haven, questioning Joe’s civil rights credentials. I’m sure the Lamont folks are too smart to let that happen. There are thousands of volunteers across the state working their tails off every day for a Lamont win.
tommy – your news was like a punch in the gut, so I can only imagine how you must be feeling. Please know that we are thinking of your son, and you and your family, and will send love and prayers and healing energy your way.
In case anyone is interested, on South Park tonite at 12:30, the episode “Mystery of the Urinal Deuce” is on. It reads ….Eric Cartman exposes the true culprit behind the Sept. 11th attacks.
My son saw it and he said it is really good.
I love this place. I love these people.
I don’t know you Tommy, but in this setting you are so present to us all.
I pray for you and your precious family.
It’s kinda like Bailey’s but made with rum and a hundred times bettah! Our Jamaican friend turned us onto it first trip and one trip we brought home a case :)
Actually, I found a place you can get it without going all the way to Jamaica, mon…

Very late to the party, but this sounds like a great idea for a post-election thread. Bring it back, and let’s kick it around then.
(Lots of stuff flying around on this thread, like Tommy’s kid’s diagnosis, so don’t feel like people missed your comment.)

Tom -
Hugs and love for you, Esten, and all who love you both.
Doc T will know far more than I, but CLL in 3 year olds is quite curable in my world, too.
Wherever you and Esten are, I hope the program will offer psychological support for you both (and your spouse, of course).
I’ve only worked with the adult side of oncology (as shrink for oncology patients at a big ‘ol teaching hospital in LA), but even there with the grownups the program was careful to provide psychological support.
Oncology programs for children and adolescents offer even more psychological support.
IIRQ, National Cancer Institute (NCI) “comprehensive” oncology programs [41 in the US] are required to provide such care. THe comprehensive oncology programs are almost without exception part of big teaching hospitals.
The foregoing illustrates a relevant point, and I hope I’m not intrusive by stating it.
Docs are like mechanics – the more we do something, the better we get at the task.
In general, medical school hospitals – and the hospitals medical schools choose to work with – provide the most up to date care – they see a very large number of pediatric oncology patients…
If that was out of line, I do apologize.
[OT of my OT. Another option for emotionally supportive oncology care was created by a physician whose loved one’s cancer treatment was anything but supportive. In response, one Dr. Salick (a nephrologist) created a network of private oncology centers focused on state of the art care along with strong emotional and psychological response.
The network - which Dr. Salick sold - was extremely successful. The demand for this network indicates not all oncology programs are equal in terms of touchy-feeelies. A lot of options may be available, however, and demand for patient-centered oncologic care is very high.
PPS - above is not a plug - wouldn’t know Dr. S if he fell on me…..
The reason I mention the topic is to describe the simple fact that need for psychological support as a component of oncolgic care is very great, and often unmet.]
Someone else will read this for you – summary:
1) Hugs and love for you and Esten.
2) Cancer is a scary word for all of us. Yet, most little kids with CLL do really well – they beat the cancer.
3) Psychological/emotional support for you and Esten and Esten’s mom is likely to help, and requesting it is a sign of health.
4) A perfunctory “support” group (or groups) for whomever is on the hospital floor may well be insufficient to meet your needs. If that is the case, it is perfectly OK to say so and seek more personalized assistance from the oncology program.
5) In LA county UCLA, Cedars-Sinai, and the City of Hope (in Duarte, but worth the drive for the amazing care) have outstanding oncology programs. There are also excellent pediatric teaching hospitals in LA with very good oncology programs…
6) Hope suggesting some prgorams give better care than others does not seem intrusive or interfering. I intend it as empowering.
Peterr @ 148
Hmm, Lauren, hope you’re keeping notes so nothing gets away. This is a fabulous idea and another way to empower the grassroots. I for one have a Dem Senator who w/b re-elected this yr but is *seriously* in need of a good primary challenge, and there are lots of places that could/should have better reps.
If you would like to blog it where it won’t get lost I can set it up so that you can post on my blog (it’s really quiet there, a great place to store stuff for later)by way of temp storage. After the rush is over you cvan edit it or have folks can stop in and add or discuss stuff, it can stay as a blog/wiki and/or become a book, video, whatever. If you are interested, contact me at through my blog (link is in my name above).
Hugs to Tommy, best wishes for strength and calm (easy to say, I know…) for you, Esten, your wife and your daughter.
Just a small note to Kirk Murphy’s very comforting post — hugs are nice, but *facts* last longer! — is to make sure your daughter is OK in this. She’s going to be in a tough spot and she’ll be making the best of it but what with everything stressed and Esten the focus, she not be asking for what she needs. But you’ll probably see that if/when it occurs.
Take care of each other and take it as easy as you can. {{{{{Tommy, Esten, sis and mom}}}}}
Well, you know what they say about talkin’ to yourself, and look at the time! Night all.

It seems to me that it’s worth spreading this site around. If I didn’t know better, I’d think these guys were actually supporting Ned. Weird, huh?
Thanks so much for the music!!! Got me dancin’ and singin’! Needed the pick me up and motivation.
