(Ned the Fighting Koi hits the road, as rendered by Monk)
We've had some great submissions to the TRex Virtual USO Tour 2006 art contest! I will be posting the winners tonight and as a group, we will choose which design will go on to adorn the next generation of FDL t-shirts. Each artist featured here tonight will get their very own copy of "Ray Sings, Basie Swings" from Concord Records, a very fitting prize since I'm about to (virtually) hit the road, Jack.
On Sunday night, the series will begin with an intimate look at the Roberto Rodriguez for Congress campaign in California's 25th district. I had a great conversation today with Armen, the Rodriguez campaign's media ops manager. He was a delight to talk to and will be here on Sunday night in the comments thread (I hope) to take your questions and to explain why the Rodriguez campaign believes that every party needs a chicken.
But let's get to tonight's winners, shall we?
We begin with an entry from Mike V:

I like this one a lot because of the gumshoe/sleuth aspect. Plus, the hat and tie are très sharp.
We have this from the fabulous LindyH:

Brilliant. This is one of my favorites. Especially with Ned TFK as a tie!
From our old friend Monk, we have this very fun design, from which our post header was taken:

Hee!! I love that. Especially Ned's little bowl with tailpipes.
Millineryman sent this along:

I like the halo effect, but I think he may have me confused with a much nicer Theropod.
And we have one more hand-drawn entry from Carol S. that I have not been able to successfully resize into the proper number of pixels. Carol, if you're reading this, can you send me a 360×450 version of that image? It's so great. I want everyone to see it.
So, got a favorite? I'm having a hard time because I like them all so much. I asked Ned which one is his favorite and he swam three times clockwise around his castle, twice counter-clockwise and then rested on the bottom of the bowl, which means, "I like Monk's because I've always wanted a hot-rod, but they're all very good."
Help us out here. And be sure and be here on Sunday night to find out who on the Rodriguez campaign makes coffee so strong that no one else can drink it and yet drinks 13 cups of the stuff a day! Ouch!
Thank you all again for your help and support.
UPDATE: Still no word from Carol, but I did find this from Darkblack. It wasn't an entry into this contest, but I do like the image so.

UPDATE 2: Last but not least, this from Carol S!

Look what a little bruiser Ned is!! (Thanks, Monk for the resizing!)

MONK!
Sweet! I’m honored to have qualified.
I’ve been looking to pick up a copy of that Ray/Basie CD.

Great graphics!!!

Suggest starting a PayPal link for relief from medical insurance deductibles for great contributors to the NetRoots cause.
Post it and I’ll be first in.
TRex!
hmm. decisions, decisions… they are all quite good!
Of course you qualify, Monk. You’re very, very, very talented.
I was a *little* disappointed that Darkblack didn’t send an entry, though.
Looks like TRex paid a visit to Denny Hastert’s attorney earlier today. Good thing he only does this to soulless Republican lawyers.
TRex, I heard this today on the radio: “Alex Jones, the TRex of talk radio.”
Frank33 @ 11
Who the hell is Alex Jones?!
I’ll smash him like a grape!
I hate to say this, but Monk’s fish is not a koi. It is a fancy goldfish. I guess Ned was so excited about the wheels that he didn’t look closely and pick up on that.
You really do not want to know,(prisonplanet.com)
hmmmm …. Bono had a meeting with W today in Chicago on Airforce Uno and supposedly W raised a million during his four hours here where he called Hastert the current and future speaker …
I think they need a visit from Koi Ned!
and I can’t figure out how to pick a favorite .. I want them all! on black t’s please!
Monk. For sure. Um, Gnome de Plume, koi actually ARE fancy goldfish…. Monk rules.
Siun @ 15
I know! I love them all for different reasons!
And what the hell is Bono doing hanging out with the Most Evil Asshole on the Planet, anyway?
I think they are all very clever, it’s hard to chose.
But I love Monk’s because Ned has that little firedoglake flag flying from his bowl (he really should be wearing a helmet, too)
dab from CT @ 19
Have you ever tried to fit a fish for a helmet?
TRex @ 20
I’ve got a helmet for me pet dog Eric, and I’ve got a helmet for me pet cat Eric…
Gnome de Plume @ 13
You’re absolutely right Gnome, however… I simply based it off of TRex’s original FDL post where he introduced us to Ned:
http://www.firedoglake.com/200…..ark-rehab/
Plus, I just like to think he’s a baby koi.
-Monk
Monk! I like them all but it’s gotta be Monk, with maybe a caveman font.
TRex @ 20
I know they squirm a lot. But it’s for their own good. And they really have some fancy helmets these days…
I’m honored also to be in such esteem company also.
This was a lot fun.

TRex, today at lunchtime some of us had a BUNCH of fun telling everyone what was “Clinton’s fault,” just like the Goopers do. It might be fun for everyone to play the game, kinda like your limbo contest… Just wondering…

Damn. I think we need them all on tee shirts. How can a warrior queen pick only one?
I can barely narrow it down to Monk’s and LindyH’s.
Don’t make me choose!!!!

Alex Jones runs prisonplanet.com. Flaky, but gets more stuff right than a higher and higher percentage of the MSM every day.
Fun place to visit. Rense is even more hilarious, especially if you forgot which flying saucer you last saw.
Uh oh, Marion, are we going to have a fish war? Koi are not fancy goldfish. They get exhibited along side them because they are both cold water fish. Goldfish are Carassius auratus while koi are Cyprinus carpio. They are both in the Cyprinidae family, but then so are loaches, barbs and others that are definitely not confused with goldfish. Sorry, but my guys in the back yard wanted you to know. They have barbels and swim a lot faster than the goldfish that snuck in with them!
must sleep…
I’m having comment glitches tonight. You?
It ate the part where I said I loved LindyH’s ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK; Jeff Quatronne hit it right on the head because you are our own shining
startheropod and besides Ned’s tisket-tasket basket is just soooo cute; and Jeff Atta’s Rex Noir is just how I would have done it if I could draw. But Monk. Just, Monk. Except the font. Is that Bombere?

Fish in a helmet.
Being more of a wordsmith, I encourage a twist on the theme of Godzilla meets Bambi–TRex meets Lieberman, with Ned waving a Ned pennant.

Soon, eg, I promise. I’m about contest-ed out right now. Maybe Pach will do it as part of Blue Army. Contests are fun, but since I generally only get one post a day, sometimes they take the place of other more, uh, pointed writing that I would be doing.

Monk, hands down. I said the night I saw your entry, Monk, that you’re the reason I don’t seriously compete. But I had a lot of fun with it.
Better resolution here.
Wow, they are all amazing.
OT: Tonight I attended a live program featuring Al Franken and Tucker Carlson. Carlson stated, “Come November 7, the Republicans are going to lose big.” He didn’t expect it, but the diverse crowd broke out in spontaneous clapping and cheering. He further said such a loss for the Republicans made him very sad. He admitted that he was a Republican supporter. He also told us it was wrong to say Geo. W is evil.
Carlson said he was Episcopal and was adamantly opposed to any form of abortion whatsoever.
He said he didn’t think the whole Mark Foley-related scandal was THAT important.
He said he liked Dick Cheney.
Seems like Tuckerboy has had his head buried in the sand for a while.

OK, Web Sherlocks:
Here’s a fun little exercise. The Washington Post is currently running a blog commentary on its front page entitled — get this — “Strike North Korea, Now”. Catchy title, huh? Here’s a sample of the content:
http://blog.washingtonpost.com……html#more
“(I)t is just a matter of time before North Korea sells a nuclear weapon to another rogue state or a terrorist group such as Al Qaeda for cash. If allowed to continue adding to its nuclear arsenal — and one must assume that it will violate any agreement it signs and never submit to verification of nuclear disarmament — North Korea might also resort to nuclear terror to extract economic assistance and other concessions from Japan. [snip]
“There is no precedent for permitting a mentally ill state to possess nuclear weapons. It would be incredibly irresponsible — even suicidal — to let this happen.
“Therefore, war: A surprise attacks aimed at swiftly destroying the enemy using all necessary means available to the U.S. military. Though it may seem extreme, the use of sudden, devastating force may be the only way to resolve this problem. Kim and his cohorts are not likely to go quietly into the night. Retirement and exile are out of the question; rather than submit to strangulation by sanctions and blockades, the regime will likely attack South Korea, where thousands of U.S. troops are stationed, and fire missiles at Japan. Even if North Korea is not presently capable of putting a nuclear warhead on a missile, it can strike out with chemical and possibly also biological weapons; and analysts generally agree that the casualties of a new Korean conflict would surpass the numbers of dead and injured in the Korean War.”
The link to these Deep Thoughts is right now (9:30 PDT) on the home page of the Post, right below the link to Dan Froomkin’s White House Briefing.
Here’s the catch: the author is anonymous. You’d think someone calling for the certain death of tens of thousands of people might have the courage to self identify. And you also might think the Washington Post would grant us the courtesy of a by-line for a piece advocating (another) pre-emptive genocide. You would be wrong on both counts.
I suggest one way to find out who the author is would be to contact David Ignatius and Fareed Zakaria, who are moderating and editing (not so much) the blog.
The guest blogger is identified only by his own blog, “China Confidential.” My comment on the blog thread — sincere, brief, and not remotely profane — was blocked by the comment moderators.
Fortunately at firedoglake, we speak more freely. In that spirit, I’d say that if the Washington Post is so eager as to invite and compensate a “guest” commentary advocating human slaughter on their homepage, I’m sure Donald Graham won’t mind if I come over to his house and crap in his sauna.
Umm, that “Jeff Atta” would be me, Mike vanAtta. I understand how the first part of my last name might have been misplaced (I’m pretty used to it), but not so sure where you got the “Jeff” from.
Regardless, thanks for the mention.

the Shrillster weighs in on the election, via Raw Story:
TRex: I enjoy Alex but he is a bit “gruff” and he says he puts people who disagree with him first for callers on his show. And so if you call him up then I would have some responsibility. Tough choices. I really like Lindy’s tie and use of Attack, Attack, Attack. Monk’s reference to both FDL and Blue America is excellent and that koi kar is mighty cool. But then again, Mike’s Detective TRex is appropriately suave.
I’m glad I don’t have to judge the finals.
I’ve liked LindyH’s best from the beginning. The fish tie just does it for me. Monk’s is beautiful, and would make a great poster or book cover, but to me the detail is a little too fine for a t-shirt.
I like Mike V’s best and the Ted the Fighting Koi flag 2nd. Hard choice. Great colors and design.
Oh by the way I do not want to be critical but I would like to see a really big scary TRex T-shirt-virtual USO tour is good and I definitely will need a couple t-shirts.
I do love the Detective TRex.
A lot.
Alex Jones got all bent out of shape when a student paper called his show “left-leaning” (after a staffer was thrown out of a Bill Kristol talk at UT), so I don’t know how he’d feel about the warm fuzzies from folks here. Nonetheless, the man has nads of steel (even if he sometimes wears a tinfoil helmet to match).
On The Clock, I went to the WaPoo website, read, was appalled, left a comment, etc. Appalling. Fortunately, I’m still on a high from tonight’s great “Colbert Report” with my very favorite governor (at least, until Deval Patrick is sworn in).

Anyway, he’s not fooling anyone; he worships at the altar of Wingnuttia (High Church.)
As if to illustrate.
Crossfire may be gone, but Tucker is still out there hurting America.

Don’t know about you, but I’m thinking my donation to this Saturday’s Blue America is much larger than usual. Seems like the least I can do to recognize the incredible part Tommy played in the development of this fantastic project.
Just letting folks know I’ve just compiled the comments from last thread with specific info and sent them over to Tommy – along with our love and a suggestion that he read the full thread when he needs a boost. Well, his powers diminish against the night sky.

Oh, yes…What a great student of the guitar.
I found a Mac app that lets you actually download YouTube videos, called TubeSock.
so I’m sucking down Ted, Lenny Breau, Clarence White, Eric Johnson, all my fav players, for the ol’ video iPod.
Here’s a Youtube video of Lenny that I saw last night, which was filmed at MI in the early ’80’s.
Worth seeking out…He explains the 7 string and has a blow on a McCoy Tyner tune. Dodgy video quality at times, but that doesn’t matter.
I just downloaded that one, but thanks.
I may have told this story already, but a friend turned me onto Lenny’s first album on RCA while I was in college. It really moved me, esp. the meandering version of “Freight Train”.
I saw him live only once, at a NAMM in Anaheim, jamming at a booth with Steve Morse standing back and playing rhythm, with a big shit-eating grin on his face, knowing that he was in the presence of someone special.
Liona Boyd told me once that you couldn’t help but love Lenny’s spirit…So pure, yet so lost.
Did you get the Tal Farlow ’summit meeting’ clip yet?
Yes, thanks.
Liona came into Capitol for 2 albums while I was there, let me play a couple of her instruments. Really nice person, a little eccentric, but really nice, and man, could she play. I haven’t talked with her in a while, but I get her email updates.
Glad to know she was up on Lenny.
Did you see the post I did earlier this year about Jake Shimabukuro, the amazing ukulele player? He did a version of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” that is holy.
Yes…Quite good, isn’t he? That ukelele of his has a lovely tone.
Indeed. It just thrills me when someone takes the guitar, and its substitutes, to a higher level. Pretty cool!
It’s an imperative with some, I think…To go beyond the manufacturer’s suggested boundaries.
Here’s one I’m listening to right now…Tal playing Body And Soul.
Thanks! I hadn’t found that one yet.
I’m listening (and downloading) some Steve Howe right now.
Gotta sleep, but thanks for the musical interlude!
And I, as well…A very early good morning to you, Steve.

From the mood around here, it seems everybody’s been reading the good poll news–and made commitments to help turn out the vote to make sure that reality matches the polls. As always, lots of talent around the ‘Lake. I’d like all of the above designs on black tees.
Brisk morning here in central Jersey–low 40s, still dark. I’m making coffee and a batch of herb biscuits before heading off for a workout and work.
Anybody else up early?
Woah.. So this is how Bush Justice Dept types get in touch with their inner police state… McNulty’s announcement of Adam Pearlman-Gadahn’s treason indictment a couple of days ago (apparently for appearing in OBL’s video tapes):–
“Adam Gadahn is an American citizen who made a choice — he chose to join our enemy and to provide it with aid and comfort by acting as a propagandist for Al Qaeda,” McNulty said, adding later: “Today’s indictment should serve as notice that the United States will protect itself against all enemies, foreign and domestic. . . . Betrayal of our country will bring severe consequences.”
OK. The guy’s probably a bad guy, and he’s clearly broken the law by joining AQ, but, seriously, is this announcement unrequited hyperbole or what? …the choice of words is better than sex for every boot-clicking neocon.
up in the middle of the night for a minute – just heard that Yunnis and the Grameen Bank won the Nobel Peace Prize and this makes me smile soooo big – awesome work and world changing – I am so glad he will now get the recognition he deserves … good stuff!

Mornin’, y’all.
Don’t know what to tell you, JC. On the other hand, there’s a pattern of all the attention and help seeming to go in only one direction, i.e., towards the top. (In some of my tin-foil-hat days, I think it’s because they have dirt on, well, everyone now.) Frankly, I’m almost at a loss of what the Shrub gave these Congresscritters in return for the slavish rubber-stamping. My fear is that they got appointments within the line agencies that have been making destructive changes that will take years, if not decades, to undo.
Awfully dark for so early in the morning. Time for some more coffee, evidently.
Sorry to be gabbing so much but there is a Dark Lord Cheney Alert in Topeka KS, he is worried about Jim Ryun being defeated by Nancy Boyda. And he praises-guess who? Initials JL-give up?
—————
Prior to his 20-minute talk, Cheney posed for photographs with Kansans willing to pay $1,000 for the privilege, a contribution to the Ryun effort.
The nation’s commitment to Iraq would be undermined if the Nov. 7 vote throws Congress into Democratic hands, Cheney said: “This nation must reject … a strategy of resignation and defeatism in the face of a determined enemy.”
“Jim Ryun’s going to get kicked out of Congress,” Boyda said.
Ryun’s campaign said plans for a vice presidential visit began in midsummer, weeks before a pollster for Boyda released numbers suggesting a statistical dead heat.
The vice president said Democrats have “lost their perspective” in the war on terror. But he singled out one for praise — Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut
“Have I done something to offend the White House? … I am always getting the shaft,” Foley wrote to Gov. Bush on September 29, 2004.
Insert tasteless comment here.
No worries, Frank33 — it’s a loose ramble around here most mornings anyway.
Haven’t been following your race out there that closely, although my folks live out in Salina. Does Cheney actually have pull in Kansas? I’d have thought that even some of the GOPers would realize by now that these guys really aren’t Dole-style Repubs.
Good morning at the Lake! NJProgressive — are you still here? I was curious what the upshot of the husband/Menendez evolving decision was or continues to be? It is a very serious issue for many and it was nice to talk about it that one day.
PS Did everyone read Tommy Yum’s very sad news comment? I am trying to figure out how to do something real rather than simply virtual good wishes.

His GWoT adventure in Iraq has cost Americans 300 billion dollars, almost 3000 dead, and 20,000 wounded, and cost Iraq over half a million dead, and has vastly increased the number of terrorists and the amount of terrorism in the world. Yet that miserable piece of shit dares to say that Democrats have “lost their their perspective”!
With all due respect, I recommend that the Vice President take the advice he gave to Senator Leahy.
John Casper — on who is leaking.
If I were Foley — even in rehab, I would be able to figure out which way history is headed and I would do whatever damage control I could…. But do these really help him? It looks more like Bush was holding him at arms length because ? Because he knew Foley had issues but not what they were? Because Bush was told Foley had to stay but eceryone was holding their noses because of the little boy thing?
I am not sure yet where these letters go….
Salina Ouch. Don’t know much about why Dark Lord would be worried, but several Republicans have switched to D, Paul Morrison vs. the disgusting Kline, Attorney General. And Sibelius Lt. Gov.

Sorry! And thanks for the clarification. I knew koi were carp family, but thought goldfish were too. Give your guys my best — koi are beautiful. Are yours fighting koi too, or is Ned a different subspecies?!
Well, here’s a disturbing piece from the WaPost this morning. People should go take a read on this — I mean, it’s one thing to publicly discuss Foley, but 30-year-old arrests? At what point does the Dem party say, in essence, “hey, we’re better than that” when it comes to digging up dirt on private lives?
Maybe it’s something worth discussing here. The GOP playbook says to not give up until it’s over — like the old political joke about the difference between pink and purple (your grip on your opponent’s throat) — and it’s occasionally been painful to see Dems not jump at opportunities to do so. Is there a line separating personal and public lives that you can’t cross?
Thanks imm, your analysis makes a lot more sense.

Our local Democratic candidate hesitates to refer people to his opponent’s wikipedia entry because of the dirt it contains. ;-)
Morning imm,
Mr. NJ Progressive actually got a call from the Democrats yesterday, asking who he would be supporting in the Senate race. They asked if he would be supporting Menendez, and he said he had been planning to vote for Menendez, since he had voted against the Iraq war when he was in the House, but that since Menendez had voted to authorize torture in the Senate, he couldn’t bring himself to vote for him.
He decided to skip the protest route (I was willing to make the Abu Ghraib costume for him, with hood and wires and wooden box to stand on), but instead has gotten involved with two peace organizations, one in Princeton and one in New Brunswick.
I’ve signed up to help the Dems, and will voice my concerns about Menendez’s vote to the organization.
And we had a Dem doorhanger on the front door when I got home from work yesterday–nice mug shots of GWB and Baby Kean.
NJP _ I am so proud to know (in this small way) you and you husband. You both have come up with such thoughtful and positive responses ….

And the deciderer calls the party who won WWI & WWII cut and runners!
NJP, just being curious, what was the caller’s response when Mr. NJP voiced those concerns?
Thanks, imm.
I am very sorry to hear such sad news from Tommy Yum. Mr. NJ Progressive gave me a Squirrel Nut Zippers album for my birthday about 3 or 4 years ago, so I know and love Tom’s creative work, and I deeply appreciate all he’s done here at FDL.
OFG — will there be a test? :~)
Excellent list! I will just remember Hamdan. That is enough for me.
FishGuy,
I wondered the same thing. Mr. NJ Progressive said that the caller didn’t say anything. Mr. NJP figures he’s probably been taken off the “call back on election day” list.
And Padilla, big wups there!
OFG,
How about adding torture, and Clear Skies [the awful giveaway-to-industry environmental bill]?
And let’s add the Lieberman kiss!
Go Ned!
Coffee, anyone? It’s time for me to head off to work.
Work for peace, every day.

I guess I just find that a bit disappointing, in the sense that so many of the calls (including the ones that Mrs. FGD and I get) are so one-sided without an opportunity for any dialogue. There’s a certain Eddie Murphy-esque aspect underlying my response questions (”what have you done for me lately?”) in that some of these pols have voted in ways I strongly disagree, yet they and their staff still expect my unquestioning support, e.g., Bill Nelson. At the very least, these staffers/callers should agree to take brief note of the concerns and agree to pass them up the chain-of-command, so to speak.

Imm, not sure how Tommy feels about it, but I think a fund (YumYums for Young Yums?) to send a little joy Esten’s way would be great.
I love Monk’s entry. Especailly the font. It made me think of Monty Python’s Flying Circus and therefore created the correct laugh till your sides hurt snarkaliciousness
Just back for a minute before heading to the train –
It is a BEAUTIFUL day, just dropped Little Imm at school. Mrs. Imm always catches the early train…. Cup of Joe in my hand, sitting here with y’all. Just remiinds me how lucky I am.
As for OS and Balrog. Something like that for sure. I will write a note to OS later and see how we might go about this. I can think of a million things to make a three year old happier…. But let’s remember Tommy and his wife and well, and the sweet five-year-old who was just walked off to school by Dad.
So, I have another question. I find (perverse as it sounds) that really sad songs make me feel better at times like this. None for me is sadder or more heart wrenching than George Jone’s Grand Tour which I just listened to about five times this morning.
This is the only version I could find to share — a little overdone, but you get the idea — and wait for the punchline!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxxhSgHqs7I
I call these “weepers.” And the question is,
what is the saddest song you know?
John Casper — I keep hoping DoJ will eventually catch up and lump other non-profit so-called “educational” organizations in the mix with Abramoff-Norquist and the like.
Heritage Foundation and TownHall.com come to mind immediately.
What I wouldn’t give to see these places upended so that they could no longer provide shelter and support to the likes of Michelle Malkin and Ann Coulter…
Balrog, Esten AND his big sister. What a hard time for her too. (h/t Anne)
John Casper #155 — BTW, did you happen to notice that same Brit has now backpedaled over an enormous distance? Today Show must have spent 5 minutes on that counterspin.
Wonder who got to him…Tony? Did Bushie’s folks bypass the Poodle?
Oh gosh,
Just went back to read the comments and saw the sad news about Tommy Yum’s little one. What a heartbrake.

I did an EPU”d comment a couple days ago about a rogue investigation in NYC back in the late 80’s by a bunch of ex Presidential protective unit agents who thought NYC was being run by a homosexual cabal.
I opined at the time that too much of this looked like the work of people schooled in th e preservation nof evidemce. After all, I don’t have my IM’s from 3 years ago, do you?
I think after it emerged the Gannon/Guckert got into the WH, someone decided to dig a little deeper.
This crap about a network of gay people having a secret society on Captial Hill (click the links, you will laugh yuorself silly) sounds an awful lot like the “homosexual cabal” craziness from 20 years ago.
I wonder who put al this evidence into such nice admissable packages?
Sorry about the resizing TRex.
I don’t know how to do that for the Web.
Thanks Monk for doing it for me.
