UK Army Chief – Goes Public WIth “We HAVE to Leave”

The head of the Army is calling for British troops to withdraw from Iraq “soon” or risk catastophic consequences for both Iraq and British society.

In a devastating broadside at Tony Blair’s foreign policy, General Sir Richard Dannatt stated explicitly that the continuing presence of British troops “exacerbates the security problems” in Iraq.

Quite a piece, Mary. The religious content in the article has a subtext to it that needs parsing, but by someone closer to the religious scene in Britain and Europe. I can’t tell if Sir Richard is a theocon blasting at Blair, or a more moderate Christian lamenting his faith’s decline in the public sphere. His take on Muslim hospitality (and the difference between an invitation and kicking down a door) seems spot on (and makes the kind of distinctions a moderate Christian would make), but I don’t know how to read his comments about “Islamist” threats and challenges. Using “Islamist” in the US press would carry a lot of culturally-specific baggage, as it also does in the UK, but I don’t know enough to spell out what the cultural differences would be between the US and the UK in using it.

Still, the purely political aspect of the criticism is more than enough to knock Blair around on his way out the door.

Any chance of an active duty US general officer in any branch of the service dressing down Don Rumsfeld and then talking about it publicly? (Put that on YouTube, and I’d sit for an hour waiting for my poor dialup to download!)

GW Clusterfuck has now butchered 2994 troops in Iraq. (total coalition casualties).

I’d count anyone missing a limb, having their jaw blown off, or missing chunks of their brain as butchered as well. Walter Reed Hospital filled up with vegetable cases long ago, and the miracle of modern medicine can be heartbreaking. There are about four times as many soldiers as 3,000 dead who wish they had died.

yup and the same goes for the Iraqis and Afghans and Lebanese and Palestinians.
