(Hey, everybody. Jane's a little busy, so I am stopping in for a little afternoon fun!)
I can't stop giggling about this video from The Young Turks. In it, Cenk Uygur courageously attempts to wrest the truth from Dan Gerstein's locked jaws about Joe Lieberman's characterization of the Foley scandal as a "partisan frenzy".
Gerstein says: Well, that's just another Lamont campaign fabrication. He was very clear about what he said.
Oh yeah, Danny?
Cenk Uygur: I want to come back to that point in one second, Dan, but let me run the second clip that we have there for you and have you react to this. This is Joe Lieberman from a couple of days ago.
Joe Lieberman: (on tape)…It's spinning out of control. It's become, uh…another partisan frenzy in Washington…
C.U.:That is referring to the Foley scandal. It seems like he's saying that the Foley scandal has turned into a partisan frenzy, doesn't it?
DANGERSTEIN: Yeah, and, and…I'm happy to acknowlege that point, but what he didn't say, um, uh…was that Speaker Foley's role, ah, Speaker Hastert's role was, but that calling for his resignation is overly partisan…
You know, the next time I stick my foot grandly into my mouth, as everyone in the room recoils around me, I will assure them, "Well, it's what I didn't say that counts! I said Denise was getting fat, but I didn't say she was ugly, too!"
Oh, Dan. You're such a tard. Not only did you get caught in a lie, you just shot your own argument in the foot before you even got your pistol out of the holster. Holy Joe is saying that anyone who wants to see Speaker Hastert held accountable in his role in this Capitol Hill child sex ring is engaging in a "partisan frenzy", but THEN Dan goes on to maintain that no one in the Democratic Party has officially called for Hastert's resignation and neither has Joe. Joe has joined everyone else in Congress in officially calling for the investigation to be pushed off on the (glacially slow, entirely neutered) ethics committee.
Gerstein: I don't know of anyone in the Democratic Leadership who's called for Hastert's resignation. Essentially (Lieberman) has taken the same position as Nancy Pelosi!
So, uh, then where's this partisan frenzy? Dan, DAN!! Listen! If you're going to make strawmen, you can't rip out their stuffing in the same breath! It's not just bad form, it's worse than not saying anything at all!
I've said it before and I feel fairly confident that I will say it again. Sending out DANGERSTEIN to handle your campaign's perception management is like trying to change a diaper with a Molotov cocktail. It doesn't do anything about the shit, and now everything's on fire!
I wish we had Gerstein on camera during this interview. It would be funny to watch his eyes bugging out as he realizes that he's hoisting himself on his own petard.
When the movie of this gets made, I want Chris Kattan to play Gerstein. As "Mango".

"Would you tell a rainbow not to shine? A bird not to fly? Then you cannot tell Dan Gerstein not to spin and lie!"
Sigh.
What are we going to do for fun after November when Gerstein's out of a job?

Fitz, fitz, fitz..
One of the most disheartening things about being politically engaged as a progressive in recent years is the utter lack of integrity on the other side. It would be so gratifying to have spirited discussions/arguments with those who don’t share our political outlook, but you have to be starting from a place of basic honesty and integrity to have a meaningful back-and-forth. When there is an inability to come to grips with the facts, there isn’t any sense in engaging these people. Worse, we’re talking about a Democrat in this case (Gerstein.)
At last, Fitz?
“partisan frenzy” Well….there he goes again.
The amount of BS being thrown about by Gerstein is remarkable. The unfortunate thing about taking up the argument about whether or not Lieberman said what he did in fact say, is that it serves to extend the partisanship meme he’s been spinning since the primary. He’s effectively created that frame and every mention of partisanship or partisan frenzy serves to bolsters his campaign.
elrod @ 1
I don’t really believe that Gerstein is a Democrat. He’s a charter member of Ct for Lieberman…and it’s become quite clear that he’s a hyperpartisan CFL-er at that.
Has this been posted yet? it’s going around the Jewish neighborhoods.

What Lieberman finds doesn’t work to his advantage is “partisan” and objectionable. What Joe likes is ‘objective’.

Off topic, but a South Carolina mom has been charged with killing her twin boys. When a similar thing happened in 1994, Gingrich used it to get votes, saying it “vividly reminds every American how sick the society is getting and how much we have to change.”
It would be great if there were a newsworthy Democrat who would use this tragedy and remind voters which party controls today’s sick society.
The Dems need to TAKE CONTROL of the dialogue. Like – I am a PROUD LIBERAL – What does that mean? Way PAST TIME for current Dems/Lib to say it LOUD/OFTEN like JFK!
If by a “Liberal” they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people – their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties – someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad; if that is what they mean by a “Liberal,” then I’m proud to say I’m a “Liberal.”

No, you don’t understand. I’m on the AFA’s email list and this is what they told me would happen if the “liberals” win!
“How important are the upcoming elections? Extremely important! Below is a list of what we can expect if the liberals win. These elections are crucial. It is vitally important that you vote. Please vote and encourage others to do the same. As bad as things are, they will be infinitely worse if the liberals win.
The strategy of the liberals is to get Values Voters so disgusted and discouraged that they will not vote. If that happens, the liberals will have achieved their goal and they will be running our country.
Here is what we can expect if the liberals win:
Amnesty for 12,000,000 illegal immigrants.
A push to make homosexual marriage and polygamy legal in all 50 states.
Only liberal judges will be appointed. They will create laws to implement the social agenda liberals cannot get passed through the legislative process.
Liberals will make the killing of the unborn more difficult to stop.
Liberals will continue to try to rid our society of Christian influence, including any reference to God in our Pledge and on our currency.
A return to the “Fairness Doctrine” in broadcasting where opposing views must be given equal time. Every conservative talk show host will be forced to give a liberal equal time on every issue. The purpose of this rule will be to shut down conservative talk shows.
An increase in taxes to push new social programs.
Passing a new “hate crimes” law making it illegal to refer to homosexuality in a negative manner.
Liberals will give terrorists from other countries who try to kill Americans the same rights American citizens enjoy under our constitution.
We will withdraw from Iraq, sending the message to the terrorists that if they will just be patient they can win and bring their terrorist acts to the U.S.”
I’m scared, Daddy.

“Iraq, and screw-ups with N Korea and Iran, are hurting the GOP more than Foley; discussing which areas Republicans are weak on should not be construed as a consensus that the GOP is no longer in trouble over Foley and everything else. In fact, one could argue that the Foley fallout has yet to fully be characterized, whereas we are extremely clear on what damage Iraq is doing to the party in power. OTOH, it should also put into perspective the fear of an October Surprise. The likelihood of something like that entirely changing the election at this late date is pretty slim. It can happen, but it’d have to be something pretty radical to make a difference now.” The Next Hurrah 10-12-06

Mad Max… (edited)
MAX CLELAND, FORMER U.S. SENATOR: Well, first of all, I would like to remind the American people and the president that he cut and ran from Vietnam. So did his vice president.
I mean, they cut and ran from Osama bin Laden. They are cut-and- running from Americans veterans. They spend $8 billion a month in Iraq and underfund the V.A. by $6 billion a year, according to the Congressional Budget Office.
So, this cut-and-run stuff is just bumper-sticker stuff. It is not a plan to win. It is certainly not an exit strategy. So, we have 140,000 troops on the ground getting blown up and shot in a civil war. It’s time to redeploy them, bring our Guard and Reserve home, to guard our own borders, and go after Osama bin Laden, and al Qaeda. It’s still, al Qaeda, stupid. And that is what the president doesn’t get.
Get out. Redeploy. Take care of our own troops.
I mean, I think that’s what we’re talking about here. We have — we do not have a plan to win. Well, that’s not — stay the course is no strategy. It is no strategy to win. It is no strategy to exit. We’re just getting kids blown up. We have lost 2,700 kids over there. We have got 20,000 wounded, 10,000 wound — wounded for life, maimed for life. And it’s time to end this thing.
Now, the Iraqis are going to settle their differences, one way or the other. They have been at this for 5,000 years. Let them have it. And it is not our 51st state. We have got to take care of our country. We have got to bring the Guard and Reserve home to take care of our country. We got to focus our active forces , covertly and overtly, on killing or capturing Osama bin Laden and his terrorist cadre.
If people don’t understand that there is a civil war going on there, and more than 100 Iraqis dying every day, and that three out of five Iraqis want to kill Americans, then, I can’t make them — make this point any clear –any more clearly.
If a frog had wings, he wouldn’t bump his rear end.
I mean, this has been a disaster for the country, not just for the Republicans. We had four years in this war. We have lost a lot of fine young Americans there. It’s time to redeploy the forces, our forces, and bring them — bring the Guard and Reserve home, and refocus on the real enemy.
It is al Qaeda, stupid. And this crash in New York should just remind us that it’s been five years since 9/11. And, if we don’t get it now that it’s al Qaeda, stupid.

They were going to roll out a campaign suggesting that Dems were soft on pedophiles, by not wanting internet restrictions, but guess what that didn’t work out too well for them.
Breaking news.
Jim Baker and Lee Hamilton of the Iraq Study Group were just on the NewsHour. They agreed that Iraq was hot, especially if you’re older and have to wear 35 lbs. of armor. Outside of that they opined that they had reached no conclusions.
Well, there you have it. I know it’s a lot to take in but I think it was worth sharing. Yeah, I have no idea why they were on either.
Wow. Check out what Raw has re: Baker/GHWB and their studies.

This is huge.
Former Sec of State James Baker (R) and Lee Hamilton (D) on “Newshour with Jim Lehrer” now talking about their Iraq Study Group effort.
When Baker was asked why delay reporting their results and recommendations until after the November elections, (my paraphrase): “Jimbo don’t want their recommendations to be political”.
My translation: “Jimbo don’t want his best boys Junya, Darth and Dummy, and their complicit Repug colleagues to be held to account for this tragedy come November”.
“Let me run out the November clock on this one just like I did in Florida 2001, so we Repugs won’t catch one in the neck!”
Nice Rovian try, but no cigar!

What Cenk Ugyur did was the political equivalent of putting dog poo in a paper bag, setting it on someone’s porch, lighting it on fire, and ringing the doorbell. He knew Gerstein just couldn’t help stomping on the bag to put the fire out. I’m a (supposedly) mature adult, and I still find this old gag hilarious.

America. Can’t. Win.

Fry [to Bill Clinton’s head]: Hey, I remember you. I was gonna vote for you one time. But voting isn’t cool. So I stayed home alone and got trashed on Listerine.
Gerald Ford’s Head: Frankly, I’ve never felt voting to be all that essential to the process.
Richard Nixon’s Head: No kidding, Ford.
It’s probably boring, and it’s been said a bazillion times before. But the major problem with this country’s political system is that elections aren’t won on the merits, elections are bought. Something has to be done.

I really think that if Hastert is taken down it will clinch the election for the Dems. That is why Bush is with him today. It is very important because right now Hastert is holding it all together…
Right wing Christians, a group that went overwhelmingly for the Bush crowd is but another example of people voting foolishly against their own interests.
My Aunt, who is a 99 year old native Oklahoman, and didn’t make it past the 3rd. grade (and she’s a very religious woman) had the Christian right and the Bush ‘number’. She voted against Bush twice. She can’t stand the man. And everything he represents.

After watching KO, what I wouldn’t give to be a fly on the wall of Dobson’s study or Robertson’s Green Room. These folks are NOT going to be happy when Kuo’s book hits the shelves. They are not going to be happy at all, and they are going to be ringing Karl’s phone a great deal in the next few days, asking some very pointed questions.
Expect some kind of gay marriage/abortion/stem cell proclamation in the next week. They may be evangelicals and not Catholic, but Dobson & Co are going to ask for some extreme acts of penance, and Rover is looking at bad enough poll numbers to come through with it.
But as fun as it would be to listen in on those conversations . . . hey, is the NSA hiring? . . . the big, BIG, BIG question is whether this will get onto the radar of the run-of-the-mill rightwing pewsitters. If they feel taken, they may decide to sit home come November.
Let us pray . . .

This says it all…
With less than a month to go before the elections, Vice President Dick Cheney offered up strong words of praise for Joe Lieberman, while taking shots at the “Dean Democrats” who have “purged” the Connecticut senator from the Democratic Party.
“The case of Joe Lieberman is a perfect illustration of the basic philosophical difference between the two parties in the year 2006,” Cheney said at a Topeka, Kansas fundraiser for Rep. Jim Ryan on Thursday afternoon. “And it’s a reminder that the elections on November 7th will have enormous consequences for this nation, one way or the other.”

If Cheney thinks being a Dean Democrat is a bad thing in CT, he is sadly mistaken. Hope the Lamont campaign uses this against Lieberman.

Mommybrain- “I care about his past, same way I care about the rampant hypocrisy on the right. Arnie’s attitude toward women is bad bad bad. Ask anyone who’s worked with him what an arrogant (little) prick he was=is. It’s the character, stupid.”
Yeah, I just didn’t have time to get into all of that- about his ass-grabbing etc. etc. I’m surprised that TRex didn’t seem to be aware of Arnie’s “particulars”. And, you seem to know about even more “particulars” than I do.
(sigh)…if only those Christians were more like Jesus. Or at least were cognizant.

so are you, and I hope to meet you and give you a hug in person one day…
Your conscience is very important and real to me.

Peterr — I’ve always thought that most of the fundie leaders were at least as cyncial and manipulative as Bush/Rove. They were snake oil salemen dealing their own kind, and I doubt anyone had any illusions either way. They found each other useful and they both used their constituents to aggregate power, influence and money.
Ned Lamont is the bravest, gentlest, warmest, most wonderful human being I have ever met in my life!
How many times do I have to tell you IT’S CLINTON’S FAULT!
I listened to this interview and I was very disappointed with the way they let Dangerstien use them to spin his crap. They never called BS on his garbage and did not really challenge him. They let him get by with that “he never specifically identified any Democrat” crap when everyone knew what the LIEberman Grinch meant. Poor job, really.
Don’t spin this interview as a win, we have to work much harder to get our message out.

When it comes to Lee Hamilton, use the “D” lightly. That guy is as bad (worse?) than Joe Lieberman.
