While Ramble On Rose was speaking in the Rose Garden presser, the following hit the wires:
– MSNBC reporting that the Army will keep troops at the current levels in Iraq through 2010. Jim Miklaszewski. reports that this has been in the works since 2003 or so. Guess all that speculation prior to the 2004 elections that troop levels would be reduced was a whole lot of faux hot air? (And, according to MSNBC, only 1/3 of US combat brigades are ready for a response, if need be — which puts us at a very thin stance for North Korea. Heckuva job, Bushie.)
– OPEC is cutting it's production by one million barrels. (Fill up yer tanks now, gang.)
– Yet another school shooting — this one in a Missouri middle school — so how did the President get away with hosting a conference on school violence in America and not bring up guns one single, solitary time? Ignorance really is…I can't even type it in this context. I'm just disgusted at the attempt to manipulate the public.
– Can someone help Atrios decipher this Presidential direct quote?
I am, you know, amazed that this is a society which so wants to be free that they’re willing to — you know, that there’s a level of violence that they tolerate.
"[A] level of violence that they tolerate"?!? Um…hello…average Iraqis do not have the wealth and resources to simply retreat to the family estate in Kennebunkport or the "ranch" house in Crawford — they "tolerate" it because they have no other choice. Next time, try some compassion. Jeebus.
– Froomkin has much more on the Presidential quest for attention and relevence. And some interesting bits on Rove as well (Susan Ralston's resignation is bringing up a few more questions…). Lots of discussions on facts and potential failures.
So much for that change of subject Rose Garden strategy…talk about your lost news cycle opportunity, which makes one wonder about the messaging planning strategy overall. Guess when all you have is crap…
Had enough? One thing you could do: get involved with MoveOn.org's house parties for Iraq for Sale this weekend. Or join up with their Call for a Change effort. Or sign up to work for a local progressive candidate — the change we want is up to all of us — please get involved today!

There is still a month, the momentum seems to be shifting, and with the new Lamont ads, I think we will soon see a difference.

Does anybody remember the crap about the military not being ready in the 2000 elections?

Lets throw some of that back in their faces.

While OPEC has announced a million barrel cut in daily production, it has not yet apportioned those cuts among its members. There are four things to keep in mind here. First, OPEC members historically have cheated on their production quotas and will continue to do so. Second, even an agreement on paper will be difficult to achieve. Third, Saudi Arabia’s ability to enforce discipline because of its reserve production capacity has eroded as world demand has increased and its reserve production capacity has correspondingly decreased. Fourth, most oil producing countries are overly dependent on their oil earnings. They need the money to keep their unbalanced, inefficient economies and corrupt governments from falling apart, which explains why they cheat and will cheat on their quotas.
So Shays not only thinks it’s okay to cover for child predators, he’s going to exploit Mary Jo Kopechne’s death a little into the bargain.

In Christy’s last post, she linked to Glenn Greenwald’s post about the 3-year torture of Jose Padilla. It you have not already done so, please read the entire post. It is chilling, but is something that every American should be required to read.
I urge all here to spotlight the Greenwald post to every editor in the country, every political, legal, national, WH and other relevant reporters. In your comments in the Spotlight screen, you might want to note that the treatment used on Padilla has now been made “legal” by the detainee treatment act, and that the perpetrators and those who authorized what are clearly war crimes received amnesty in that bill — which is yet to be signed by the President. If you spotlight to Connecticut media, you might point out that Joe Lieberman voted for this bill, and Lamont opposed it.
The Bush Administration’s torture of US citizen Jose Padilla
The Spotlight link to use for Glenn’s blog is here:
Spotlight link for blogs other than firedoglake
To do this, click on the spotlight link first. In the space, enter the permalink URL from the specific Greenwald link above. Then select the journalists to whom you want to send the article by clicking on each name and clicking on “ADD” You can pick only 10 reporters at at time — the limit. Then hit continue, and follow the directions from there.
This is viatlly important and will help Dems all over the country. And it will help your country too.
Maybe a dumb question, but what’s the story with Bush sitting on that urgent torture bill, and not signing it? My understanding is that he has 2 weeks from passage to sign it. That’s tomorrow. Is he going to push it past that just because he can? Is he just waiting until tomorrow to get it in the papers Friday (as his press conference will be tomorrow) to try to run out the clock on the shitstorm that’s rolling in?
Sorry if this has been covered, but I had to ask. BTW Olbermann is such a hero.
I put this into babelfish.altavista.com
“I am, you know, amazed that this is a society which so wants to be free that they’re willing to — you know, that there’s a level of violence that they tolerate.”
and then asked it to translate from Peaforbrains to English. And it answered
“It is an incomprehensible contradiction that the land of the free and the home of the brave has twice elected a draft-dodging war-mongering dictator-wannabe as its president”
tying back to an earlier thread, do you think that bushie is going to hold the torture bill until the day the troop casualties cross the 3000 mark? it would be just the kind of rovian move to try to turn that negative to a positive (well in their minds anyway).

I fixed the bold, gang. Refresh your screens please.
Primordial Ooze @ 31
Peterr actually found the answer to this a few days ago. The signing date is provisionally set for the 17th. The President has 10 days to sign from when he gets the bill. The WH asked the Congress to go slow in getting the bill to him so that is why it will be more than 10 days between passage and signing. The timing was I expect because the WH wanted a big success it could trumpet closer to the elections. Events have overtaken them.
Can we have cleanup on aisle 37, please? (not that I necessarily agree with MoveOn, but that post is a bit voer the line by my standards)

[…..]
Any new emergency, [Gen. Barry McCaffrey] said, such as heightened tensions in Korea or Taiwan, a domestic terrorism attack or natural disaster, could push the Army beyond its limits.
“If the other shoe drops, we are breaking the U.S. Army,” he said.
McCaffrey said the Army has been fighting “on a World War II footing” since 9/11, exhausting its capacity.
“I think it’s irresponsible. I think we put the nation in the position of strategic peril,” he said.
[……]
I just can’t believe this is happening, and if people bring it up, we are called appeasers. Someone explain this to me.
Hugh @ 39
I suggest a location for the signing ceremony: the Hague
Bill at 37 — no idea what you are talking about with the MoveOn forums (I didn’t even know they had them frankly) — but they are an outside interest group trying to aggregate efforts on the progressive side independently of the official political campaigns — and, as such, they can have no coordination with the Lamont campaign or any other candidate. That’s a red herring to try and tie any problems you have with them to any individual campaign, including Lamont.
Anti-semitism is vile. I know we spend a LOT of time weeding out some nasty comments that people try to make about various folks, including against Lieberman, from our comments section. It takes a LOT of work, on an hour by hour basis, for us and for our volunteers — so I am more than aware how much work goes into that for us in our comments.
Thank you for filling me in, BobbyG and Hugh, and thanks to Peterr for digging.

So the plan is to keep troops in Iraq at least through 2010. If that’s the case, and I’ve no reason to doubt this, then Democrats might want to elect a president for 2008, whom they feel confident will not pursue that no-win policy. Jeepers, I wonder which Democrat presidential wannabe would at this time, and perhaps if elected, NOT pursue a policy of disengagement from Iraq?
“they “tolerate” it because they have no other choice. “
Especially the dead. Yeah, they really, really tolerate it.
Missed the presser, sigh! James Baker on the Daily Show said there was a pacification plan for Bagdad. Less than 24 hrs. later the munitions dump explodes in So. Bagdad affecting at least three residential neighborhoods. I am curious as to how much Depleted Uranium ordinance was stored there. The attrition of death over the decades will pale the new figures(650,000). I outraged, bummed, sad!
Froomkin links to a great op-ed in the Times of London by Alice Miles. A taste:
And she wrote this BEFORE his presser this morning.
We as a nation lost our strongest tool in international relations when we lost our credibility and integrity. Our credibility went down the tubes with the slam-dunk, we-know-where-they-are, who-gives-a-damn-what-the-rest-of-the-world-thinks invasion based on non-existent WMDs. Our integrity followed shortly thereafter when torture was revealed to be the official policy of the US government.
Our credibility and integrity made it possible for us to forge a moral consensus around freedom, human rights, and due process. Let other nations have their gulags, their secret military tribunals, and their kangaroo courts. Let other nations have their “Baghdad Bob” and “Tokyo Rose” spokespeople. We spoke plainly, truthfully, and openly, making our case for all the world to see. We left it to other nations to build their case around fear, oppression, and secrecy – we stood for openness, opportunity, and dignity.
But alas, that is no longer the case. “Sod off” indeed.
Our standing in the world is too important to leave to the Republican party led by a Shrub. We need a House controlled by Democrats, to hold hearings, demand accountability, and rein in his madness. We need a Senate controlled by Democrats, to insure that Bush does not continue to pack the Supreme Court with extremists who don’t give a fig for the Bill of Rights.
We need to win in November.

The Shrub Speaketh:

His amazement is perfectly natural. After all, because he tells them it’s necessary, Americans keep handing over their freedoms (and their souls) just for the illusion of safety.
The army has been beyond it’s capacity for quite a while already. That’s why Iraq is such a mess, and we are losing Afghanistan.
We should never have invaded Iraq at all, and should have kept Afghanistan appropriately “staffed”. I keep going back and forth though on why this has all happened. Is BushCo merely incompetent? Or are they deliberately making things worse, increasing worldwide terrorism, etc., as an excuse for doing things like getting rid of habeas corpus? In other words, incompetence, or cunning plan?
I’m not sure which anymore. But when Americans start getting declared traitors and “enemy combatants”, it’s time to remove the cancerous regime, or find another place to live.

love the skinner, hate the skin
Christy et al: last Thursday a group called worldcantwait.org held rallies in cities nationwide, coast to coast and in nation’s our capital. Since I’d never heard of them until they were mentioned on NPR (KCRW, Santa Monica for me…) that morning, I checked their website and was satisfied after looking at the names of supporters that they were a legitimate group with whom I’d be willing to work. People like Alice Walker, Daniel Elsburg (sp?), Harry Belafonte, Ed Asner, and too many others to try to list. Bottom line, my partner and I attended their rally in downtown L.A. in the afternoon, and realized we’re on to something. Their mission: TO BRING DOWN THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION. NOW. Hence their name, The World Can’t Wait. Each time I read one of your posts lately, I get a strong sense of your desperation with the status quo in this administration. Strongly suggest you check them out; your feedback/opinion of what you find would be most appreciated.
Meanwhile, know that they’re requesting that demonstrators who participated last week return to the places in their cities each them met, on each Thursday for the next six weeks, with the hope of building momentum for their movement. We’ll do our best to be out there. For almost six years now, I’ve been asking,”Why aren’t we rioting in the streets?” These non-violent demonstrations are a better route, and a great start, in my books.
the South is poised to fall:
Peterr #53,
I agree. There is a right way, an adult way for us to deal with the threats and challenges that confront us.
With terrorism, we could have pursued those who committed it, arrested them, tried them before real courts, and thrown the book at them. Instead we find our leaders defending torture, kangaroo courts, rendition, secret prisons, the suspension of fundamental legal rights like habeas, and the casual invasion of our privacy through massive data mining operations and warrantless wiretapping.
With Iraq, there was the Powell Doctrine we could have followed. John Casper and I are both very big on this. War must be the last resort after all diplomatic avenues have been exhausted. There must be not only overwhelming force but overwhelming support for its use. There must be clearly defined objectives. We must have a plan both of how we go in but also of how we get out. Bush’s invasion of Iraq violated not one or a few but all of the tenets of Powell’s Doctrine. The result is a quagmire for us and a civil war for the Iraqis.
With Katrina, FEMA under Clinton was an effective cabinet level agency that could anticipate and mobilize resources to meet large scale disasters. Under Bush, it was demoted, emptied of his experts, and headed by cronies. As a result, the fundamental social compact between Americans: that in disaster we take care of our own was broken. A major city and its citizens were left to fend for themselves or die.
What we have today is a country led by dumbasses. There is no other way to say it. They are so sure of themselves they will listen to no one else but they have no clue what they are doing. Everything they touch turns to cr*p. Everything they do is a failure because they do not think. We live in a complex, adult world that requires complex solutions to complex problems. While they see everything in black and white, either/or. If a slogan won’t fix it, they are lost. You can’t run a first world, technologically advanced country this way. Even the Taliban couldn’t run a third world state that way.
The problem is that Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, Addington, Yoo, Hadley, Snow and all the rest have no understanding of the modern, let alone adult, world. They have no understanding that actions have consequences. They are in the most powerful positions in the world and they do not know what they are doing, and what is worse they really, really think they do.
Here’s a quote from the first Gore-Bush debate on Oct. 3, 2000. It’s long but it’s so full of classic double speak, I don’t know how to edit it down.

Defeat Lieberman by attacking Schlesinger:
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/10/11/11400/389
This article REALLY makes sense to me. Lamont has gotten all the mileage he can out of pointing out the differences between him and Lieberman, and it’s just not going to be enough.
What he needs to do is to point out the differences between Schlesinger and Lamont/Lieberman. He needs to turn Lieberman’s Republicans against Lieberman. He needs to give Schlesinger name recognition and credibility. In short, he needs to do what Rove & Bush did in 2004 — run a divisive campaign that angers the opposition — in this case the CT wingnuts who are holding their noses to pragmatically vote for Lieberman. By equating Lieb with Bush, Lamont is giving them an excuse to vote against the Republican.
Hugh,
I’m not convinced following the Powell Doctrine would have made much of a difference, long term. An occupation is an occupation and a quagmire is a quagmire.

I humbly disagree on this last bit, Hugh. BushCo knew full well civil war would result, it was fully predicted, and this is playing out according to their BEST expectation. As noted, Bush is not dismayed by the 650,000 number.
They want civil war, because the policy is genocide, just at it is in Gaza, as OK Kiddo links, above. The simple strategy: cut off economic aid, remove/undermine any strong leaders, destroy any infrastructure for humane conditions, and let them kill eachother.
It’s what they wanted, each of them: Bush, Cheney, Libby, Perle, Wolfowitz, Condi, just like the Likud party openly discusses on a daily basis in the Knesset. And it’s what they have now. What’s a good number for them: 1,000,000? 2,000,000?
Sure, why not.

Cozumel #83,
The point is that if we had followed the Powell Doctrine we never would have gone into Iraq. It was a vanity war. It was meant to be quick, cheap, and glorious. It’s purpose was to cement Bush’s image as a tough, successful leader and ensure the dominance of the Republican Party.
The reality was about 40% did not support the war. For me the key point of the Powell Doctrine is precisely the need for overwhelming public support. If you don’t have it, you need to work to get it. If you can’t, then you need to rethink your strategy.
As for the remaining points, we did not have broad international support. Diplomacy had not been exhausted. The fairly goofy war plan of shock and awe had to be extensively modified and was far short of the ‘overwhelming force’ requirement. Overwhelming force btw does not mean simply going in and shooting a place up. It means destroying an enemy’s present and future capacity to wage war. This was not done. There were no clear objectives. And we had no exit strategy.

Walden, we agree.
Blantant unprovoked attacks for FREEDOM?
This is how Bush views the “freedom” he says Iraqis will tolerate anything for.
He’s using the same “line of thinking” that says Americans “love freedom so much” they are willing to let the decider shred their constitution and be wire tapped at the will of said decider IN ORDER TO STAY….”SAFE.”
Freedom is just a word to him that is used in a totally self serving manner. Freedom to him means freedom for ….HIM…. to do as he pleases and to con Americans into letting him do it by convincing them that they will be free of ..THREAT, PAIN, ANY EFFORT… if they let him RULE. Bush sees our freedom ( freedom that HE WILL PROVIDE US) as freedom from having to think, be adults, and participate in Democracy.
He has, in a sense, attempted to “privatize” our participation in government – sort of contract it “out” to ….him. Bush says: “now you can just sit back and let my corporation ( it used to be your government) “protect” you. All you have to do is pay for it with your future, your money, and your REAL FREEDOM

somehow their behavior reminds me of Skinner’s view of people. he wouldn’t want to accept that, for sure.
What’s with CNN? Talk about major creeps. The small plane crash can’t be tied to terrorism. Don’t have anything to tie it to a terrorist act. Remember 9/11, floors buckling. We’re not saying it’s terrorism.
Breathless, breathless. Panty-phone woman is telling us in borderline breathy voice: No we’re not bringing up terrorism because we think its any kind of terrorism…9/11….
Shiny thing.
Scheiss.

Yeah, that explains our government–pigeons pecking big red buttons.
Dpt of fdl people meeting offline…
ET and I talked for the first time by phone to discuss how to help Diane Benson (D-Alaska) defeat Don Young (R-Forced Abortions). Here’s his report at 153 late nite.
ET: “fdl rocks! seriously. I met egregious today on the telephone re e’s confidence in Diane Benson as the best outside bet for a US House seat. I’m overt in describing what I think I am and what I perceive myself to be doing politically and artistically when I post here. when we talked on the phone I wasn’t totally surprised to find out how amazing, effective and important egregious is in the vital world peace struggle. OK, I sorta was. some here are more modest than I am, and egregious takes the friggin’ modesty cake.” [end ET quote]
All I can say is, guess we didn’t talk long enough if he thinks I’m modest :D
Please support Diane Benson:

and stop Don Young’s slave labor and forced abortions in the Mariannas. This is a campaign that could really catch fire if it gets some publicity. And her personal story is one that would resonate with many of us here at fdl.
CNN – NORAD dispatched fighters over numerous major cities

see shiny thing? mind go blank. bend over, we’ll drive. leave everything to us. we know best. just go shopping. spend money……..
scheiss sums it up.
I am very sorry for the victims of this disaster on this day in dubya’s America. As I watch the coverage, I am thinking of the victims of our own violence and inattention in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, Lebanon, Chechnya, Darfur, North Korea, etc.
Fighter aircraft flying over our cities now acc. to Barbara Starr…dubya pretending to presidate yet again.
scheiss.

Hi, Egy! I read that this morning with a big grin on my face. I know you. You are ADORABLE.
um, like me. Yeah… that’s the ticket!
God Damn plane crashed into an apartment building in my town. What the F..? No one knows if it’s terrorism and now NORAD is releasing fighter aircraft over major cities. Son of a bitch.
Well, well.
All under Bush’s watch. Remember this people.
the revolution won’t be televised but it will be blogged. meanwhile it’s the land of nod for ol’ fahr (or old fart, if you prefer)> ‘nite all.

Schlaf gut!
This story STINKS, like Elephant dung.
I just wanted to add to the fine discussion above about the Powell Doctrine and especially the
complete fuckingabsence of public support and diplomatic unanimity with the rest of the world, which the Powell Doctrine requires.Iraq is classic nation building.* Reagan used to rail against the U.N. about their attempts at nation building.
Our ground forces are trained to work in conjunction with artillery and Air supremacy in the taking of military objectives. Building a government is NOT a MILITARY objective. Our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan are targets waiting to be hit. Most of the artillery used in Iraq is from the Sunni’s in their IED’s.
I think under the right conditions “nation building” can be done successfully by the U.N. From what I can gather, Bush has been trying to manipulate the Iraqi factions into becoming an ally of the U.S. and Israel, so I don’t want to soil the concept of “nation building” with what Bush has done.
Finally, we’re still spending $280,000,000/DAY over there.
new thread – Jane’s got a question: How Now, Barak?
God Damn plane crashed into an apartment building in my town. What the F..? No one knows if it’s terrorism and now NORAD is releasing fighter aircraft over major cities.
The FBI says it doesn’t think it’s terrorists. Fighter planes sounds like the usual over-reaction: prevent the last attack again.
NYC, I have a view of all this from my balcony but not much to say at the moment.
twolf1 @ 121
October nonsurprise. Yawn.
Boo! Scary brown people! Attacks! Oh wait it’s not Halloween yet. My bad.
An accident my ass…more like a warning. Boy, I’m such a cynic, but I’ve been thru this once already, having been a block away from the World Trade Center and watching the second plane fly into the south tower. But this time I’m not afraid. I AM PISSED. HOW THE FUCK CAN AN AIRCRAFT BE FLOWN INTO A BUILDING IN NYC AGAIN??!!
Someone please tell me…
I’m waiting…

Small craft on VFR, flying in too close on a foggy, rainy, windy day. Just like the plane that hit the Empire State Building in 1945.
Either one or two fatalities reported.
It’s Jim Miklaszewski.
I am late on this one…. sorry.
I agree with “Balrog”, please don’t ruin my happy memories….
Yes, it is Quite a juxtaposition, I agree with Christy on that. I think “Victim or the Crime” might have been a more appropriate song choice from the GD catalouge for that picture, ymmv.
Peace.

But I didn’t elect him! I swear I never voted for Bush!!! ;)
(love the translation)
There’s a freakin’ level of violence that we’ve inflicted on them! Six hundred thousand Iraqis found it pretty goddamn intolerable, don’cha think?
What? He thinks it’s a cultural indiosyncracy that they put up with a level of violence that Americans just wouldn’t put up with in their gated suburban neighborhoods?
I am so ashamed. This turd is President of the United Strates!
