A high level moderate Washington Republican, whom I may not name, thinks they will bring Romney to the nomination. McCain is also possible.

While I’m not up to speed on Romney I would certainly relish the idea of McCain as their nominee – almost too easy to imagine the grief his emergence would rain down on his pointy little head. My late husband, who served as a US Army intelligence officer in Viet Nam before and after McCain became a POW lost all respect for him for his involvement in the savings and loan scandal.

I’d love for them to nominate Romney! The fundamentalist Christianofascists would stay home in droves, because, you know, LDS Church. Also, he’s a horrible, horrible speaker.

And he has absolutely NO record in MA to run on. It’s been 4 years of thumb twiddling, marking time so he could then go out on the road and campaign for what he really wants. He’s an empty suit.

Rove is a classic postmodernist.

Moral impoverishment is an eventual consequence of postmodernism.

The thing that really could make a Democratic victory important is that the Democrats would be doing it without the Dixiecrats for the first time.

Think about that. Past Democratic control of Congress depended on an alliance with people like Strom Thurmond and Zell Miller. If the Democrats get control this time, it’d be done honestly, without pandering to the racists; even former Dixiecrats like Robert Byrd are real, if center-rightish, Democrats these days.

This is something very very important that nobody ever talks about. The “Southern Strategy” that brought the GOP into power depended hugely on a massive Anschluss of the Dixiecrat powerbase into the Republican Party.

A Democratic majority in Congress this time would be a true Democratic majority, not a Klan Koalition.

Well, yeah… but please bear in mind that there are some of us down here who don’t fall into that possibly over-broad category of “Dixiecrats.”

But of course. I was only referring to actual, self-proclaimed “Dixiecrats” when using the term “Dixiecrat”–Phil Gramm, Jesse Helms, Strom Thurmond, et al. I guess calling Zell Miller the “last of the Dixiecrats” is a bit of a stretch, technically, but the shoe certainly seems to fit, doesn’t it?

I was in no way using it as a synonym for Democrats from the South! I’m appalled when people do that, because “Dixiecrat” has an actual meaning.
