Who will be the GOP's "Woman in Red"?
Cumpanas deserted her husband on February 4, 1932. A year later, she opened a brothel on Halsted Street. By 1934, however, Cumpanas was facing deportation. On July 4, 1934, John Dillinger moved into an apartment Cumpanas owned. After John Dillinger was rumored to have killed two Chicago police officers on May 24 of that year, a large reward had been offered for his capture. On July 22, believing that FBI agent Melvin Purvis would stop her deportation, Cumpanas fingered Dillinger to the FBI, resulting in his shooting outside the Biograph Theater in Chicago. Despite the nickname, Cumpanas was wearing orange.
Some people believe that the Republican operative most likely to cave in to investigators and sell out the whole operation will be Sue Ralston. She's Karl Rove's aide de camp who recently resigned her position in the White House to spend more time with her subpoenas.
But I have high hopes for Scott Palmer.
Who is Scott Palmer? Lawrence O'Donnell has been wondering the same thing.
He is Speaker Hastert's chief of staff, which makes him the key player in the what-did-Hastert-know-and-when-did-he-know-it drama. Scott Palmer has issued a statement flatly denying that Kirk Fordham, Mark Foley's former chief of staff, warned him that Foley was crossing the line with pages long before Foley's inappropriate email surfaced. Palmer's denial of Fordham's headline-grabbing claim is the thread Hastert's Speakership is now hanging by.
Right! That Scott Palmer! Tell us more, Lawrence...
If Fordham did warn Palmer about Foley a long time ago, what are the odds that Palmer did not tell Hastert? As close to zero as you can get. Many chiefs of staff are close, very close, to their bosses on Capitol Hill. But none are closer than Scott Palmer is to Denny Hastert. They don't just work together all day, they live together.
There are plenty of odd couple Congressmen who have roomed together on Capitol Hill, but I have never heard of a chief of staff who rooms with his boss. It is beyond unusual. But it must have its advantages. Anything they forget to tell each other at the office, they have until bedtime to catch up on. And then there's breakfast for anything they forgot to tell each other before falling asleep. And then there's all day at the office. Hastert and Palmer are together more than any other co-workers in the Congress.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha haaaaaaaaa. Nudge, nudge, wink, wink! SAY NO MORE!! That's a good one! Hastert gay?! That would be really almost too much. I mean, just because he was once a high school wrestling coach (and apparently left that job under a cloud), and he cohabitates with an unmarried man and has for years, and his office was instrumental in covering up for Mark Foley, and, and...
Oh, god. I think I'm going to be sick. Is Dennis Hastert gay, too?!
EWWWWWWWW!! EW! EW! EW! EWWWWWWWW!!!!
Duuuuuuuuuuuude! If Denny Hastert is gay, then I'm going to have to start sleeping with women!! ARRRRRRRGH!! My mind! Ohhhhhh, my thinking may never be the same! Brrrrrrrrrrr!!
Say it ain't so!! Denny Hastert, the man who looks like nothing so much as a giant, ambulatory intestinal polyp? A friend of Dorothy? I kind of hope that we're completely off target in this speculation. Even though, were it true, it could well mean that the Republicans are incontrovertably, irreversibly toast, I just don't know if I could accept victory on those terms. Even if it would make James Dobson's head explode, I think I may find myself hoping that all of this is just baseless speculation, and that Denny Hastert never had an unchaste thought about all those eager high school boys in their tight little wrestling singlets. I'm sure his interest in them was purely as an educator.
Earlier I was scanning the headlines and saw the sentence, "DEMOCRATS POISED TO TAKE BOTH HOUSES OF CONGRESS", but for some reason my brain saw, "DEMOCRATS POISED TO MAKE BATH-HOUSES OF CONGRESS". If Denny Hastert is gay, I think the GOP may have already beat them to it.
P.S. We are closing last night's comments thread to begin the judging to see who wins their very own copy of Brainless: The Lies and Lunacy of Ann Coulter. Also, if you would like to submit art to the TRex 2006 USO Virtual Tour, tonight is the deadline. We've gotten some awesome submissions that I can't wait to share with you!

Kolbe! Reynolds! Hastert!
The more they talk, the deeper it gets.
TRex!!!!!!
OK, now I’ll go read the post…
;-)
I was telling my wife about Hastert’s housing arrangements at dinner this evening; the part she thought wierd wasn’t mentioned above: when Mrs. Hastert comes to DC she allegedly stays in a hotel.
You’d think that all men involved would have saleries sufficient to afford their own places. Are they that frugal?
dannyM @ 4
Nope. They’re just in lurrrrrrve.
The party of hyporcrites
You guys, our old buddy Jurassic Pork is kicking up quite a ruckus in the moderation queue tonight.
Hey, JP! Here’s a hint! In the moderation queue, NO ONE CAN HEAR YOU SCREAM!!
Heeeeee, heeeeeeeeee, heeeeeeeee….
There is so much more to be uncovered.
TIM Muckrakers has some about how Kolbe handled a complaint from a page, according to Kolbe’s own statement:
Wow.
I bet the Page really appreciated having his complaint be reported right back to the predator-on-the-prowl.
And did Kolbe never see the e-mails?
AmericaBlog qotes inconsistencies in two WaPo stories

Hastert: The buck stops here; especially the young ones in wrestling tights.
Go get ‘em Denny.
OH. MY. GAWD!!

Oops!
Guess Kolbe had his own idea of a good time with pages:
Rep. Kolbe visited Grand Canyon with pages
Of course, there were others along, including Kolbe’s own sister and some Park Service folks.
Sorry every once in a while your team has to take one of the…uh…undesirables.

Of course she does. Have you ever seen a house inhabited only by men?
If nothing else, women have a more sensitive sense of smell than men do. No sober woman in her right mind (even Republican) would spend the night in the hovel normally inhabited by a group of men.
They don’t call him Dennis the Penis for nothing.

~~ Just ran into Jean Hastert, the wife of House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) in the hallway outside the speakers’ Capitol office suite. She just dropped in on her husband.
It’s a rare D.C. appearence for Mrs. Hastert. She was here a few weeks ago for President Bush’s State of the Union address. She was off to an afternoon tea, at an ambassador’s residence, sponsored by some international group.
When in Washington, the speaker lives in a group house with his chief of staff, Scott Palmer and top deputy, Mike Stokke.
I asked her if she is bunking with the guys.
She is not. She stays in a hotel.~~~
speaking of friends of Dorothy… did anyone see this at Booman Tribune earlier today?

for those of you not on dialup, click the pic for the full effect (warning, spew alert)
As one local gay politician said about a gay man who supported the homophobic police chief, “Just because you suck &%^#, it doesn’t make you gay.”
I think under this clause of the gay constitution, Hastert is not and cannot be gay.
You don’t have to sleep with girlz, TRex. It’s OK. Most girls don’t like thunder lizards in their beds, ya know.
OT - just wanted to share that one of my oldest, dearest friends,Aimee Liu, past president of Pen USA - the national writers’ organization, coauthored a piece about the murdered Russian journalist, Anna Politkovskaya . The piece is featured on Huffington Post.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/.....31419.html
Anna’s story is clearly a profile in courage. She was determined to report the truth, whatever the cost.
If nothing else, women have a more sensitive sense of smell than men do. No sober woman in her right mind (even Republican) would spend the night in the hovel normally inhabited by a group of men.
You don’t know many gay men, do you?
Totally cool to have Jane working the blog comments while she’s at PFAW. Awesome.
TRex, she’s right. If we have to take Ole 60 Grit, Babs, and that Soulless harpy on our team, you’re going to have to own that bit of porcine pulchritude.
I do extend my sincere condolences, though, on owning that thing.
I just heard Tony Snow (probably from earlier today or yesterday) on C-SPAN telling Repub supporters the administration didn’t stop after a recession, 9/11, Enron and Katrina. And, they’re not going to stop. The supporters should be proud of their work.
It made me think of two things: first, didn’t stop them from what(?), ruining America; second, why didn’t they stop what they were doing and handle those crises? But, seeing this thread it also is becoming apparent they can’t stop themselves from all the other crass corruption and immorality.
Surely this isn’t what any Republic in the hinterlands wanted when they voted for their Republican representative, senator or president. They must be lurching toward the vomitorium when they hear about Foley or the Abu Graib torturing and such.
Have they had enough? Are they going to at last put a stop to Bush & Co.?
It’s been said the turnout probably won’t be very good for the Republicans. I wish they would turn out — and vote against Republicans. *That* would really send a clear message to Bush and their congresscritters that they don’t approve of this kind of ‘leadership’.
I suggest we send money to Joe Sestak (in Pennsylvania) and Claire McCaskill (in Missouri) to help them win their important races.
other suggestions of races where the Dem could use a bit of financial help?
T-Rex !!!
belated props on last night’s “Nice Closet You Have There” - that was some sweet tight writing there Your Rexness
but Denny is sooo not gay - if that were the case, I know some boyz who’d actually attend a Christian Conversion camp to leave that tribe, mah gawd
There are gay GOPers I will welcome to the Democratic party, as you proposed last night, dear TRex, although their price of admission might be high.
There are GOPers I will never welcome to “the team,” however, and the Speaker is one of those. I don’t want Denny to be gay. Not in your universe and not in mine.
PS Are you excited about doing the Book Salon on “Brainless,” TRex? Do you think we could get Susan Estrich to come on the Salon later the same day with her book, called “Soulless,” also about Coulter?

I’m trying for 4 tickets for November 7th, November 14th or November 21st, 2006.
We’ll see what happens.
I read somewhere that of all of the time spent in Hastert’s townhouse, no one there had ever cooked a meal. Denny joked about the fact that they “made tea” at one time.
Heading home, kids. Will be back in a bit.
can’t he just be asexual? I mean, ugh. All this talk about Republicans and sex is enough to make any normally, healthy person celibate.

On Topic - Scott Palmer is going down, no pun intended.
The Mafia made men totally compliant
by having them “Whack” someone and held the secret over them. The Repugs put Closeted Gays in vulnerable Power positions: Trandahl–Gay, head of Page Board; Foley–Gay, head of Child Exploitation Committee; Fordham– Gay, shovels dirt for Foley and Reynolds; Palmer– Gay, shovels dirt for Fordham and Hastert; Hastert–who really knows, but look at the circumstantial evidence. The Dons {DELAY/ROVE}have held our Congress compliant to their will by subtle blackmail and the insatiable greed and desire for power of the manipulated.

This is so evil and Machiavellian that I find it an attractive hypothesis.
Does this explain the bonding of the fundies to Rove et alii? How many of the leaders of the religious right are in the same position? There has been lots of gossip about Bauer and Reed and even some about Dobson. Perhaps they have a secret their members can’t discern, but they are completely vulnerable if someone confirms it. Perfect for decdes of blackmail.
I think a good question to ask Hastert is why Foley’s behavior was covered-up? What role did Foley play in the Palm Beach scandal of the Votes in 2000. Why would Hastert and other’s risk their whole career to cover-up for Foley??
Hastert is a man who is bluffing. He is putting the blame on his staff. The spotlight has to be kept on him. What is his and Palmer’s living situation about? It is ODD…
Go beyond Hastert’s deceit of saying he knew nothing about Foley’s emails and like a 3 yr old.. Demand WHY?? The world has seen the emails dating way back to 2000.. It is a reality. Go beyond Hastert’s bluff and raise the question WHY did the Republican’s protect Foley?
Why did Foley have so much power over them? This is what Hastert has to answer to… WHY??? It was not that they were not aware of Foley’s preying on children as they are claiming. Pressure them to reveal the source of why Foley was important to this Republican Administration and what he did for them in Palm Beach in presidential election 2000.
Why Foley is the issue with Republican’s
is to remember, The Republican’s can only get excited about “sex” news.
The Republican’s trained the American People in this, while they kept our country hostage for YEARS via the air waves and newsprint indulging in their fantasy’s about Bill Clinton’s sex life. The Republican’s even took Clinton’s lying (to protect to his family and himself over what was personal behavior) that he received a blow job from a seducing intern while the government Clinton had just been elected to run was shut down by Newt Gingrich and his Contract with America all the way to the Impeachment process…
Hoodwinking our country over nonsense for years..
While the Foley revelations might seem insignificant, It is really the tip of the iceberg of all the Republican lies; this administration’s way of life. It is the Foley story that can cause a domino effect of all the lies to be exposed as Foley’s story is hitting a nerve with what makes us American People decent people. We honor our children and our families. Foley pred on children and it was covered up by this Republican administration…
What every person should be asking themselves
IS WHY?????
Why would these republican men who are parent’s themselves ignore Foley’s behavior and enable him to have such power in the House???
Foley represent’s Palm Beach Fl. The place that was responsible for throwing the 2000 presidential election to George Bush Jr over the rightful winner, Gore. Foley had a huge hand in creating that and covering it up. This is the important story behind Foley being allowed to harm children.
Please all you worthy and intelligent people investigate Foley. AS this is where the source of Bush lies started. There in Palm Beach. Once the reason why these Republican Men covered up Foley’s behavior with children is exposed by going to the source of lies starting in Palm Beach. That is the loose thread that will unravel all the rest of Bush’s lies and deceit on this country very quickly.
Do not underestimate the American People to respond when a nerve in them is hit ( sex hits a nerve). Back in the early 1970’s the Republican administration and the Corporation’s running this country ignored environmentalist saying they were producing gas guzzling cars.
The leaders of our country in govt and business liked the money they got from these big cars…
They said “American People will never buy cars from Japs”. Then the gas crisis happened.. Overnight the American People brought Japanese Cars in droves. Screw the American Leader’s they said… They failed us… We are buying the enemy’s (then) cars… and of course the rest is history….
It just takes one weak link to bring this whole sham of a administration down… It will implode on to it’s self as it is all built on lies.
Oprah has history of moving mountains. She is doing her whole hour show this Thursday Oct 12,2006 on “Truth in America”
9/11, Katrina in New Orleans, Iraq etc. Go to her website to read more on shows this week..
As far as I can tell, the link you provide does not say anything about Hastert leaving his wrestling coach position under a cloud. The closest it comes is this:
Is there a different link that talks about trouble Hastert had with his tenure as a high school wrestling coach?

Once again, the Butterfly District is going to be in the headlights!
Goodman: Once again, America’s fate rests in Palm Beach County’s hands
Published October 8, 2006
So Republicans are worried about voters getting confused at the polls. They’re fretting that people won’t realize that Mark Foley’s name on the ballot is a place-holder for the actual candidate, Joe Negron.
This is high irony, given the derision that Republicans heaped upon Democrats who complained in 2000 about losing thousands of votes for Al Gore because of the baffling Palm Beach County ballot layout: while Gore’s name was listed directly beneath George W. Bush’s, his punch-hole fell directly beneath Pat Buchanan’s.
This voter-confusion talk isn’t the only echo of 2000.
Once again, Palm Beach County finds itself in position to tilt a national election.
Just as no one in 2000 expected the locally produced butterfly ballot to usher Bush’s ascension to the White House, no one in 2006 could have guessed that an obscure congressman from a secure district would throw the Republican Party into full S.O.S. mode just weeks before crucial mid-term elections.
snip
Elections Division Director Dawn Roberts issued a memorandum this week to the eight county elections officials in sprawling House District 16, recommending that they post signs in all polling places saying: “Any vote cast for Mark Foley (REP) shall be counted as a vote for Joe Negron (REP).”
The Palm Beach County Elections Office, to its credit, is blowing off this advice. There will be no such signs inside the county’s polling places, Elections Supervisor Arthur Anderson said Friday.

Until now, the GOP has been fast and effective at closing ranks when one of their own was in trouble. How have so many gotten away with breaking the code of silence? Hi everyone. I de-lurk every so often and I had to de-lurk for this. I’m sorry to cut in with something completely off-topic, but this is a pro-choice group of people and I just saw this ad and was so excited I had to share.
The Dem Senate candidate from AZ, Jim Pederson, just put an ad out supporting a woman’s right to make her own medical decisions. In the ad, Pederson criticized Kyl’s willingness to criminalize abortions, Kyl’s refusal to allow an exception even in cases of rape or incest, and Kyl’s desire to “stack the courts to change the law” (in the words of the ad).
I’m amazed and very impressed. I’m still not quite used to living in a “red state” and I’ve never seen anything like that here. I just donated to Pederson’s campaign (again…lurking on FDL has really taken a toll on my bank account :-)).
This election may be a long-shot, but (if I remember correctly), if the republicans hold on to the Senate, I think Kyl’s next in line for Chair of the Judiciary. That absolutely terrifies me.
I liked Jim already, but this ad was fantastic. At the link is a list of his ads if anyone’s interested (the pro-choice ad is titled “Criminal”). The ads have gotten better and better as the campaign season’s gone on.
Thanks for letting me interrupt! :-))

ccmask … not crazy - how can we even imagine what we have done?
CHANGE THE SEX AND GET THE SAME RESULTS?
Let’s just change the page boys to girls and have Foley hit on them for six years. Then have someone tell Hastert and his crew about it, no matter when, two years ago, a year ago, five years ago, and have it ignored. Mothers and fathers wouldn’t make so light of it, would they? Someone said if a principal of a high school ignored warnings that Foley got, he’d be fired so fast you couldn’t blink. Remember, please, these aren’t some underlings, they aren’t rank-and-file, they’re the top Leadership of the Republican Party.
I find it highly amusing that Hastert has decided he will be the arbiter of whether or not he goes or stays; of whether he was told or not; of whether he handled the situation in a way that protects the pages. It is a joke. An unfunny one, but a joke when Hastert says, “The buck stops here.” I think he must have meant “the dollar stops here.” Ditto for the Republicans who want to keep us safe from gay marriage and having abortions, who are so-o-o-o-o moral they can’t admit to any wrongdoing. After all, Foley left (when he was found out). That’s supposed to do it.
So vote for a Democrat this time around, or Hastert will still be there protecting us and investigating his staff, and tell your friends to vote Democratic. Sure, the Democrats are wimps and they may not be so well organized, and they will become greedy soon enough, but for a while we’ll have some balance.

Not to be mean, but an irresistible pun opportunity.
…Oooops! having just now read the thread I see you have already checked out mr. madsen…
Wayne Madsen allegedly chatted with the DC gay community and found that … well..http://www.waynemadsenreport.com/
“The rumors about another top GOP member of the House being involved in sexual encounters with young “men for hire” are confirmed to WMR by well-placed sources in Washington’s gay community. The member in question is House Speaker Dennis Hastert, whose “alternate” life style is the primary reason for him and his staff covering up the scandal involving ex-Florida GOP Rep. Mark Foley and his lewd messages sent to underage male congressional pages. Hastert’s penchant to receive anal sex is well-known to our sources in DC’s gay community. Additionally, Hastert’s reported extremely small penis is the subject of many jokes among Washington’s gay circles.”
Of course, anybody can write a blog entry, … and maybe it was all about the Repugnicon control and all….
Wow.
600,000 people.
The other day I was talking to my 88 year old grandfather who is a veteran of world war two. He has alzheimer’s so he’s in and out, but Monday was a good day. He was sharp as a tack.
“War,” he said to me, “is a drain on mankind. I was a radio operator in the war, and I’m grateful that I’ve gotten through my life without ever having to kill a man. Not in the war, not in a car accident or anything. And for that, I’m grateful.”
I told him I was going to do everything in my power to be able to say the same thing.
Remember: it is the hypocrisy, not the sexuality. It is the mendacity not the desire. Notwithstanding innappropriate, inethical, and possibly illegal age/power relations, the crucial distinction is on the lying and the manipulation of fact. That is what should be closely considered. We shouldn’t assume the puritan’s mantle for short term gain.
Geez, TRex…this decidering is hard work. I’ve got it down to under a dozen, do we really have to get down to five apiece?
Hopper @ 111
Barney Frank’s no looker, but he’s a hell of a man. He’s had the stones to be honest about who he is and to legislate in ways that make the lives of gay people better, not worse.
I’d be honored to be asked to dinner by Senator Frank.
But Denny Hastert, I’d spit in his eye for askin’!

Hi all — Ann is here with me (in the SUITE) at the Beverly Hilton. Howie was fab and Jane looked fab (Ann wrote that) She and Valeria are HOT (Ann and Valerie — oh, Jane too).

Thank you Howie! Thank you Jane! Thank you John (Amato — from Crooks and Liars)!

I just worry a little. I’m a great supporter and apologist for a fierce and encompassing erotic existence.
It is hard to be honest about this element of our natures.
The Republicans have so much to answer for….
Just thinking out loud.
I would love to have dinner with Scott Palmer, however, and try to get a fix on what the fuck would motivate a person to do what he has done.
I suspect povery, opportunity, and class have much to do with it.

Selden Spencer in IA-4. He is a neophyte who is finding his voice (see video from Harkin Steak Fry on his site) and who seems to be getting momentum despite the total mismatch of funding with the Republiclone Incumbent. They are debating tomorrow on KUNI (NPR) radio at 10CST.
I got a note from someone in his campaign, to wit:
Wes Clark was out last week appearing with him, and Feingold came earlier, but mostly the Beltway Wiseguys have ignored him. This is stupidity. Based on 2000 and 2004 Presidential voting, the district has a PVI of 0.4 D, and it’s represented by a Repub.
End of Iowa rant…
Wayne Madsen’s cover is way too deep for me, but he’s awfully good at connecting the dots. When BuggerGate hit, I googled various search terms because I suspected there would be a Rovian counter-attack on prominent Democrats before the mid-terms. I was looking to see how many Democrat office-holders/operatives had been nailed for pederasty, or who had rumors. I found three examples, two more than ten years old, one marginally current. On the Republican side I found over 50 recent convictions. This was done while waiting for my morning tea to cool.
Human nature being what it is, my expectation was that the two sides would be about equal. By a Google lens, they are definitely not. I don’t know what to make of it except to allow for some far-fetched possibilities, and to note that other organizations in the past have been ruled through blackmail and sexual favors. Like the Greek and Roman Senates at various points, pretty much every royal court before the 1800s, religious cults and churches, totalitarian parties, and certain bridge clubs. I’m still having a hard time buying it, but the data is piling up rapidly. Foley, Fordham, Reynolds, Hastert, Kohle, Mehlman, Santorum, back to Rove. If you have the same blood on your hands you can be easily controlled, and the Pugs are all about lockstep.
Lots of good work here. I think there’s so much more to come out, it’s unimaginable. And we haven’t even gotten to the war crimes yet.
My news is just reporting that JOHN McCAIN has called for an independent inquiry into the Page Scandal.
McCain has been busy today, first NK and now the Pages. Always an opportunist.
JHF:
Demonstrably, war crimes don’t clear the bar of expulsion in domestic politics. Illicit sex and illicit knowledge of that sex clear the bar comfortably. The irony is cold-blooded mass murderers may go down over mere sexual harrassment and innuendo raps. The consistency is Puritans haunted this country from the get-go.

My dad was also a radio operator in the Merchant Marine in WWII. He said pretty much the same thing to me as your gramps did to you about being thankful the war hadn’t been brutal to him.
Dad passed away last November. He was 88. My youngest brother delivered the major part of the eulogy. I talked about his love of deer hunting, which probably brought him as close to his image of God as anything he did, even though he was a serious Mason.
Playing “taps” for him after watching two of my closest friends who are now in the Merchant Marine hand a folded flag to my mom, was really fucking hard.

Rex ole boy. You just made my morning.
I am still wondering about a line I read in some MSM about the page scandal was going to reach all the way into the WH.
I am wondering if this is some unraveling that is related to Gannon/Guckert?
Is somebody trying to do a hit job on all the GOP closeted gay men on the Hill?
That is way harsh.
Gotta hit the showah. Breakfast meeting in the Big Apple today and lots of traffic to sit through.
Have a great day Firepups!
Good morning LHP and Nate (if you are still up) The clouds are gathering (literally over Boston) and we are expected to have a wet rest of the week. I hope everyone has a great day in their own corner(s) of the world.
Mornin’, folks.
Hey, imm, just wanted to thank you for your advice a week or so ago on the faculty interview seminar. It ended up going really well in North Carolina, and I’ll hear from them by the end of the month. Here’s to crossed fingers!
Mornin’, FirePups.
I’m trying to chill out after listening to that bast*rd McCain on the Today Show blame CLINTON for the problems with North Korea. (”…failed Clinton policy, blah-blah…”)
Not one mention of the complete abandonment of North Korea as a concern by the current administration.
It’s like McCain thinks it’s still 1999.
This guy must NOT be elected in 2008. Incompetent and immoral.
Only in the most warped of minds could a time of relative peace and prosperity be viewed as a negative. I just don’t understand how one can rationally argue that the Clinton Administration was any worse than the current one. Frankly, there’s more than a few that wouldn’t mind having Bill back!
Back in the late ’80’s wasn’t there a scandal about”call boys”visiting the White House after hours? I was Mom to a busy toddler and working full time in those days, but I do remember reading something about that in the papers at the time.
Sooo,I have to wonder if some of the same folks connected to this Foley sex predator scandal were involved in the 80’s scandal too. Especially those names at the top of this heap.
I also wonder about the number of female pages who’ve been hit on and otherwise, this can’t be confined to just be the males, can it? Seems to me the environment for this to be ok had to exist for it to be allowed to happen. If the environment was there, the females wouldn’t have been immune to this either.
CNN - British Medical Journal says 650,000 civilians killed in Iraq fiasco
-gunfire most common cause of death.
-bombing second most common cause.

I’m single, I’m an entertainer, when I am in the same show as a good friend of mine we usually share an apartment
neither of us is gay, neither of us is married, both of uas are womenizers
not afraid to share a bed when we’ve lnaded a couple of female friends that want the both of us…differant sides of the bed or differant ends of the women
here’s the really funny thing;
nobody has ever indicated there was ever a rumor about the two of us gay
personally, I don’t think it’s a strong indicator when two men or women share an apartment
Morning Good People, with wishes for peace and all manner of blessings the world over.
If the purpose of the page program is for high school students to further their education by working alongside House members, the latter didn’t do much to further the goal since by all accounts none paid any attention to the young people except for a few lecherous older men. Quite an educational experience to learn at a young age you are subject to sexual advances from your “superiors” and helpless to complain about it in case you may want their help after leaving the program.
Hi OS, how ya been?
I guess it’s an old joke right now, but it stikes me funny every time;
“although they were shooting themselves in the foot when the scandall broke, things have channged since then and now it looks as thoug hasert and the rest of the republicans are all on the same page”
or something similar
hehe
me to me, I think we run a risk by even caring whether anyone is or isn’t gay. Don’t get me wrong — I love TRex’s posts and would find it interesting on a political level if Hastert was indeed so — but we on the left end up playing into the “gay = pedophile and/or lecherous and/or promiscuous” meme when we have these sorts of discussions. Not being gay, there’s a limit to what I can speak to, but it seems that there’s much more to be gained by our promoting a community that accepts all sexual identities than participating in forcible outings. My $0.02-worth…
ot
my take on this weeks olberman;
not too good…no passion abut habeus corpus though to me it’s possible the most important issue to date
we really need our spokespeople to describe what habeus corpus is;
“the president can arrest someone for no reason at all and then create a law that never existed, that nobody thinks should have ever existed, and claim he’s holding that person on this new law even though the person never ever broke the law once it was on the books.
for instance, the president can arrest someone and when he finds out that person broke no law, he can declare “being in the vaciinity we arrested you is illegal”, and the person can actually be held for being in that area before it was concidered tresspassing”
things like THAT need to be said, NOT just “it violates the constitution”
Sally — you know, I think the pages got an invaluable experience working in the House, for the reasons you described.
I worked as a co-operative student at a certain Big Three auto maker’s facilities during my high school and early college years. What I saw then completely shattered my illusions about corporations and workers, white-collar and blue-collar alike. There’s nothing they teach you in engineering or in business curriculums in college that can match what students can learn in an actual work environment. Sometimes being ignored by senior adult staffers is a good thing; students can learn a LOT by observation.
But no worker, student or otherwise, should ever have to deal with sexual harassment. Period. The current dialogue offers us a great opportunity to talk about it both at work and with our kids; I just hope that people can make something constructive out of this mess and use it fas an educational tool. I know I’ve already talked with my tweenage daughter about the topic, and how to handle it when she runs into it (and she surely will).
Maybe the Foley scandal teaches us something else — we’ve assumed for too long that this kind of thing couldn’t and didn’t happen in the halls of our government. Yet another illusion shattered.
ot again
now that we have the numbers of 655000 people dead becuase of what we did to Iraq, can somebody compare the numbers for me?
hhow many people allegedly died BECUASE of saddam?
‘mornin’, pups. Heard Fineman on MSNBC this morning and the conversation was that McCain-Clinton were launching the ‘08 campaign. That McCain was going to have the meme that we needed to continue the course but he could do a more competent job.
ho-kay….
Personally I’m liking Wes Clark…and his creds…more and more.
Good morning, everyone…last warm day for a while, they say - cold weather and rain on the way.
I would like to echo the opinion that this whole thing of who-knew-what-when should be framed as an issue of power and not as an issue of sexual orientation. If Mark Foley were straight, and the page had been female, I doubt people would be speculating on whether Hastert is or is not gay, and trying to divine some meaning from his living arrangements.
This is about power: Mark Foley’s power over underage pages, the GOP leadership’s priority of maintaining their majority, and what happens when people begin to believe that their power is so all-encompassing that it shields them from discovery, accountability and consequences.
We should not be taking the bait from those who want to make this a gay thing out of ignorance and the opportunity to ratchet up support for demonizing and discriminating.
Exactly, Anne.
Absolute power corrupts. Absolutely.
Prairie — yeah. That’s what I saw this morning on the Today Show, the first salvo over the bow of the HMS Hillary.
But McCain made a major boo-boo; he was running against the wrong Clinton.
What strikes me as incredibly ignorant on McCain’s part is that he thinks North Korea would do anything else in its current position. It’s deadbroke poor, needs currency, has only one thing it can use to obtain relief. Carrots are an incredible incentive in this situation; they’ve got absolutely nothing to lose, so sticks will not work. Sticks might even make things untenable for China, since China doesn’t want North Koreans fleeing into their country.
What is so damned difficult about this for McCain? Why is he such a f*cking lunkhead?

Wrt Olbermann on habeus corpus, my take was that the visual, crossing off the 9 Amendments that no longer matter, was genius. In Keith’s defense, I think he was trying to educate people who had no idea what habeus corpus was. From that perspective, I thought he did very well.
Also the tombstone epitaph looked like it could have been stolen from Jesus’ General. The General closed down his site the day it was passed, with a big tombstone and just asked for comments. Anyone interested can still see it in his archives.

He’s got a great song and this chorus resonates: We’ve got to take this country back… Yeah, I know he’s singing about taking back country music from the drugstore cowboys. But it’s a great theme on many levels, including ours!

Heartbreaking.
Okay, FirePups, we’ve got a VRWC-orchestrated storyline going on here.
This isn’t just McCain being a d*ckhead; it’s a message that’s being actively propelled. McCain’s already drawn more than 24 hours of coverage on this matter; he’s appeared in the most valuable segment of the hard news portion of Today Show, and now his ugly mug is on the splash page at AOL along with a poll.
Here’s the current results:
Do you agree with McCain’s criticism of the former president?
No 51%
Yes 49%
Total Votes: 28,835
What’s motivating McCain to speak out?
- Posturing for the 2008 White House race 43%
- Combination of both 37%
- Concern over the situation with North Korea 20%
Total Votes: 28,539
Freep the poll, gang.
What are Rove, the RNC and the VRWC trying to do right now?
1) Change the subject from Foley Scandal, which has done considerable damage and will do so throughout the next 4 weeks;
2) Redirect attention AWAY from Bush’s failure on North Korea;
3) Redirect attention AWAY from the failure that is Iraq.
Obviously we need to continue to hammer away on all three issues since it’s bothering them enough to invest heavily in this misdirection.
What else are they obscuring as they do this? Are they playing the military card since the GWOT card isn’t working any longer?
cbl, I think this is it
US grants N Korea nuclear funds
I was thinking along the same lines. I think Bush’s 2002 actions confirm how
full of shitwrong McCain is. My understanding, mindful of those who know more, is that Clinton always kept the inspectors in there.I also suspect the WH knows they are negligent on this, so they fooled an unsuspecting McCain into carrying their water for them. If the WH had anything credibe, they would have let Rove give it to jounralists and given it to Tony Snowblower.
cbl, John Casper — you guys should point out that waiver at DailyKos in a diary, get this bandwidth to push back at the VRWC coverup.
Cripes, McCain is not just full of shit wrong, but a f*cking whore for Bush. He’ll cover up any of Bush’s bullsh*t to save his own backside for a run at the White House.

Rayne (172), the education the pages receive is not the positive one I want for them. I didn’t have to work for a Congressman to learn very early in life about sexual harrassment and sexism, both of which are alive and unwell.
ooh Big Thanks John Casper !
now for a little googling, heh heh
new thread upstairs.
McCain is Evil Jorge’s equally evil twin.
Sally — unfortunately, students would learn about sexual harassment in a multitude of workplaces as interns or co-operative students. But the page program is worth salvaging because of what the pages learn that isn’t readily quantifiable.
Personally, I think it’s well past time we elected more women to office; I think that would change the atmosphere greatly in Congress, and reduce the likelihood of the kinds of abuses that have been going on for far too long.
Rayne, thanks very much. I’m not an expert in the area and the more I write, the less it flows. My talents reside more in the area of Spotlighting and LTE’s.
John Casper — yeah, I gotcha, but the rest of us can’t SPOTLIGHT this issue if somebody doesn’t write about it. You’ve already done a fine job of making the case, just need to get it spread more widely.

But ultimately, it shouldn’t matter, should it? Isn’t that the liberal position. Isn’t that what we want. What two people do or don’t do behind closed doors is there business. I know it’s fun to watch the contortion of the Republican party try to square itself. But keep you eye on the prize.
We shouldn’t be in the business of outing public officials. I know of another quite prominate Republican who his constitutants say is gay. But that shouldn’t matter in and of itself.
And should you be making fun of his size? My 300 lb plus neighbor would want to chop your fingers off for pointing at her and making some comment like you just made. The gutter is not where Fire Dog Lake should making its comments.
