So how does Joe Lieberman respond to Ned Lamont's new ad? By mocking Howard Dean, of course. From his blog:
If you have not had a chance to check out Ned’s new ad, please do (Quicktime). It’s a scream.
Howard Dean would be proud.
Let's see, this week he's already castigated the "Democratic leadership" -- Pelosi and Reid -- for "politicizing" the Foley matter, now he attacks the head of the DNC.
I don't know what overarching party strategy has everyone staying silent while Joe Lieberman turns the leadership into his media bitch, but whatever it is, it doesn't result in anyone looking very decisive or commanding.

Jane for president!
Fitz!
Just a leetle slow. I like the “Jane for President” sentiment, however!
Seriously though, this guy makes my blood boil. Like I’ve said before, I’m quite sure Jane is one blogger Joe curses by name. Thank all that is good for fearless women like the ones at Fire Dog Lake!!!
Doesn’t surprise me. Liarman has *never* liked Howard Dean. Remember the “spider hole of denial” comment from Liarman?
The thing is, Dean stands for people having a voice in their government. Liarman wants all governing confined to the “elite”. Dean scares the crap out of Liarman.
Lame ad.
The Democratic leadership is really dropping the ball by letting Joe run any type of semi-legitimate campaign. Essentially they are saying that party unity and even respect for party primaries is not required. Long term loser of a strategy.
SusanD
Dean scares the crap out of Lanny Davis too. I saw him take a completely gratuitous swipe at Dean on the Larry King show last week, saying that Dean was politicising the Foley affair. Surprisingly, King called him on it. I was absolutely open-mouthed.
OT:
Hilary Clinton is handing out $$:
Sen. Hillary Clinton transferred $2.1 million from her Senate re-election account to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee on 10/5. She also gave $250K to the DCCC and $150K to the New York State Democratic Party. (Hotline sources) via Kos
I suggest that she should give some $$$$$$$
IL-06: Roskam Featured Guest At Fundraiser Headlined By Hastert
By Greg Sargent | bio
Peter Roskam — the GOP candidate who suggested that Dem vet amputee Tammy Duckworth wanted to “cut and run” from Iraq — doesn’t appear to be letting Foleygate prevent him from enjoying the fundraising help of Speaker Dennis Hastert. The embattled Hastert is headlining an upcoming private fundraiser for Roskam and GOP candidate David McSweeney, who’s targeting Dem Rep Melissa Bean in Illinois’ eighth, according to an invite obtained by Election Central. The event — which also features President Bush — is set for Oct. 12 at the Chicago Hilton. A Roskam rep declined comment. View the invite here.

angie & Rayne -
Tks for checking on the YouTube piece. I saw Sloan on last week talking about this but was hoping there might be something new. Will head over to the CREW site to see if they’ve updated there.
How far does Joe get to go before the ‘leadership’ figures out that he isn’t a Democrat any more? (You’d think they would have reached that point already, what with him deciding that primaries don’t count and badmouthing the guy who did win it.)
Joe Lieberman has connections to the DLC. The DLC attacked Howard Dean during his presidential bid as “an out of touch liberal”. I am suspect of the DLC, and those with ties to this organization.
Who is Eric Blankenbaker? Did Joe specifically mention Dean?
I’m confused, as usual.
Long time flip flopping incumbents want to see HoJo pull this off. They are looking down the road to their own game plans. They want to see the power of the progressive net roots defanged. God forbid we should do anything about finding progressive democrats to represent us.
Incumbency protection racket. period.

Wow bad news for Bush - the front page of CNN.com right now says:
“North Korea Calls Washington’s Bluff.
President Bush has long warned the U.S. will not “tolerate” a nuclear-armed North Korea. Monday’s announced test suggests Korean leader Kim Jong-il has decided to test Washington. Now, the question is whether that intolerance can be enforced.”

Hastert, Roskam, and shrub? No wonder they want to keep it private. A Chickenhawk’s Bawl.
That deserves to be picketed.
Glenn Greenwald has a great post up about how Howard Dean got it right (and he was the ONLY ONE who got it right) about Iraq and North Korea - that NK is a real danger, Iraq will be a distraction, etc.
Of course all of the jackels in Washington insider pundrity class were too busy laughing to actually listen.
I am trying to learn from the Amish, but I despise Joe.
I cannot forgive or forget what Joe has done to America.
Maybe the healing will start when we throw him out in November.
Rayne, if you followed the thread……
Appreciate the details; sounds like CNN ran the same piece from last week. Rats! Was really hoping there had been some NEW news.
That rotten mother-frakker! Of course he denigrates Howard Dean, Dean’s a real Democrat and a real Man and that prick hasn’t been one in so effing long, he
doesn’t know how to recognize one, hence his confusion

Totally OT, and I don’t know if it’s been posted yet tho: O’Reilly calls Foley a Democrat
Is this enough to finally call him a liar, and get him nailed for defamation or slander or something similar?
Senator Reid really needs to shoot lieberman down, and soon. I think he’s trying to cook and eat cake at the same time, and he really doesn’t need to.
This race is sounding a bit like the CA recall of Gray Davis only in the way the Party didn’t go all out to support the Democrat in the race, and went with the so-called moderate.
And that worked real well in CA, and it will work just as well in CT.
C’mon Harry, throw that mudsucker back in the river already. No seniority, no standing, no committees, no nothing, but maybe, a chair!
Imagine. One of these days, we will no longer have to concern ourselves about the likes of Joe Lieberman. We won’t have to care what he does, what he says, much less what he thinks. Mr. Lamont goes to Washington. Soon.
ESaund @ 21
Not trying to take anything away from Howard Dean at all, but he was not the only one.
Wesley Clark told the House Armed Services Committee, very adamantly, before the Iraq war that this would be a major mistake. He has always said that we need to pay attention to NK too. Everything that he warned of has come to pass.
mmr @ 32
They’ve been doing this since the story broke. They have probably figured out how to get away with it legally. Who is going to challenge it anyway? Foley has enough to deal with without worrying about being called a dem. and the dems don’t have the media behind them to call them on it.
HEy! Don’t be comparing Ducks to that two bit lying sack of goose shit, please. Ducks are loyal and honorable and a good friend in the garden. Geese, on the other hand, are foul mouthed, nasty, brutish, and ya better watch yer jewels around them, just sayin!!

Just a reminder of what the Dem leadership - Reid, Clinton et al - have allowed Joe to get away with…
NRSC Takes Lieberman
It’s no coincidence that a purposeful silence has replaced the well-publicized calls from Republicans last month for no-hope GOP Senate candidate Alan Schlesinger to make way for someone more credible.
The state and national party, it seems, have concluded that they can’t succeed in Connecticut this year under any circumstance, and would rather see Joe Lieberman win — which polls show he’s likely to do, absent a credible Republican candidate — than risk handing the election to Democrat Ned Lamont.
This morning, a source at the National Republican Senatorial Committee confirmed in a phone interview that the party will not help Schlesinger or any other potential Republican candidate in Connecticut, and it now favors a Lieberman victory in November.
“We did a poll and there is no way any Republican we put out there can win, so we are just going to leave that one alone,” said the NRSC source.
Instead, the NRSC is pulling for Lieberman over Ned Lamont, who rode an anti-war message to a victory in the Aug 8 primary.
“Most Republicans would agree that he’d clearly be a better choice than Lamont,” said the source.
–Jason Horowitz
UPDATE: An NRSC spokesman just called to make clear the distinction between actively and openly supporting Lieberman, which they’re not doing, and merely opting not to support a Republican in Connecticut.
“The NRSC is not supporting Lieberman,” said Brian Nick, a spokesman for the NRSC. “He is a Democrat who votes 90 percent of the time with the Democrats. The race isn’t competitive at this point — our resources will be used elsewhere.”

From Robert Novak’s column today in the Chicago Sun-Times:
“It’s really moot,” one of Hastert’s most severe Republican critics (who would not be identified) told me. “We are sure to lose the House, and Denny never would want to be minority leader.” With Hastert’s last performance as speaker coming in a predictably do-nothing lame-duck session after the Nov. 7 election, the month of October will be challenging for him and his party as he decides what to do with plans to campaign for challenged House candidates.

and also I have a WaPo article “Same Committee, Same Combatants, Different Tune” by Dana Milbank, April 7, 2005;
Unfortunately, I didn’t capture the link, but would be happy to email to you.
Rep. Walter B. Jones Jr. is a conservative Republican from North Carolina who voted to authorize the use of force in Iraq. So it jarred all the more yesterday when Jones turned his fury on Richard N. Perle, the Pentagon adviser who provided the Bush administration with brainpower for the Iraq war.
Jones, who said he has signed more than 900 condolence letters to kin of fallen soldiers, pronounced himself “incensed” with Perle. “It is just amazing to me how we as a Congress were told we had to remove this man . . . but the reason we were given was not accurate,” Jones told Perle at a House Armed Services Committee hearing. Jones said the administration should “apologize for the misinformation that was given. To me there should be somebody who is large enough to say ‘We’ve made a mistake.’ I’ve not heard that yet.”
As chairman of the Pentagon’s Defense Policy Board, Perle had gone before the same committee in 2002 and smugly portrayed retired Army Gen. Wesley K. Clark, who urged caution in Iraq, as “hopelessly confused” and spouting “fuzzy stuff” and “dumb cliches.”
Thirty months and one war later, Perle and Clark returned to the committee yesterday. But this time lawmakers on both sides hectored Perle, while Clark didn’t bother to suppress an “I told you so.”…….lots more?

Here’s my Don Young-Jack Abramoff narrative hot off my keyboard:
Don Young’s Connections to Jack Abramoff
P****** M*****
October 9, 2006
Don Young and Jack Abramoff first crossed paths in 1997. Young had “sponsored a bill to hold a vote in Puerto Rico on statehood for the U.S. territory. Abramoff was a lobbyist for a group called Future of Puerto Rico that wanted the same thing.” The bill passed the House but died in the Senate.
Beginning in 1999, Young became involved with Abramoff in scams designed to bilk Americans into believing that products produced under slave labor-like conditions in the Mariana Islands were “Made in the USA.” Young, as chairman of the House Resources Committee, had oversight responsibilities over working conditions in the Mariana and Marshall Islands. In spite of this responsibility, Young neglected to raise questions regarding working conditions in either Island group while touring the Pacific Ocean territories on trips subsidized or arranged by Abramoff.
Young has never been confronted on his failure to take action on labor abuses in the Marianas at that time which included forced prostitution and abortion, harsh working conditions, a rapidly growing narcotics trade and illegal garnishment of employee wages. Throughout the period of Young’s stewardship over the islands, working conditions worsened as sweatshops erected there replaced the American textile and clothing industry one shop at a time.
Chinese crime boss and sweatshop owner Tan Siu Lin was able to launder money through Abramoff to a number of GOP legislators and committees at the same time the US Interior Department was issuing reports to Young about horrendous working conditions and the growth of organized crime at Tan family-owned businesses in the Marianas. There is no evidence that Young or his staff responded to continuing reports of horrendous conditions at the Pacific islands sweatshops.
On January 4, 1999, Abramoff was hired to represent the Republic of the Marshall Islands. Abramoff’s main mission was to stop legislation pending in Congress, which would have raised costs of clothing manufacture by the Tan family and other clothing manufacture interests there.
On February 21, 1999, Young visited the Marshall Islands. As soon as he returned to Washington, DC, Young killed House Resolution 730, which called for the implementation of US labor laws in the Marshalls.
On February 2, 2000, Young called Abramoff’s assistant Jennifer Calvert to ask for use of Abramoff’s MCI skybox for two upcoming fundraisers. The request was granted. The fundraisers were held March 30 and July 24. Young failed to report use of the skyboxes, as required by Federal law, until early 2006, after the Abramoff scandal broke.
Later in the summer of 2000, Abramoff’s lobbying firm, Preston, Gates and Ellis, held a pricey tribute for Don Young at the Republican National Convention.
In 2001, Abramoff moved to the firm of Greenburg Taurig. In a January 4, 2001 proposal to represent the government of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Abramoff wrote about his confidence in Don Young’s ability to quash legislation prejudicial to the Tan family business interests. But Abramoff also complained about Young’s removal from the Chair of the House Resources Committee, saying, “The loss of Chairman Young’s authority cannot easily be measured or replaced.”
But Abramoff wasn’t yet done with Young. We know of at least two more scams. On March 21, 2001, Abramoff staffer Tony Rudy met with Young’s staff to “start gathering signatures on letter to chairman,” an as yet unclear reference to a Marianas official.
During the remainder of 2001, Young or his staff met or had discussions with Abramoff agents at least eleven times, May 25, 29 and 31; June 5, 8, 13 and 25 (twice); August 22; and December 13 and 21.
In the summer of 2002, Young’s senior counsel, Duane Gibson, went to work for Abramoff.
In September 2002, Young sought to intervene with the General Services Administration on behalf of Abramoff, who at that time was seeking preferential treatment for a group of his Tribal clients who were bidding on a proposal to develop the Old Post Office site in Washington, DC. Although Young merely wrote two letters to the GSA recommending the tribe’s business consortium, he received a $7,000 contribution from two of the partners in the deal. Irregularities in this business deal led to the indictment of David Savafian, GSA chief of Staff, congressman Bob Ney of Ohio, and Ambramoff.
On November 21, 2005 Abramoff’s partner Michael Scanlon pleaded guilty to conspiring to bribe a member of Congress and other public officials. On January 3, 2006, Abramoff pled guilty to three felony counts, conspiracy, fraud, and tax evasion, involving charges stemming principally from his lobbying activities in Washington. He is purportedly continuing to cooperate with Federal investigators, but Alice Fisher has led the investigative team. Fisher has been tied to fundraising for Tom DeLay’s legal defense team.
In February 2006, the Anchorage Daily News published a story that covered some of the Young-Abramoff links detailed above. Young responded with a long letter to the editor of the News. Young concluded, “I find the Daily News’ editorial suggesting an unethical link between myself and Abramoff to be reprehensible. You need to get your opinions [sic] straight and quit attacking my integrity.”
Soon afterward, Liz Ruskin, the reporter who wrote the Anchorage Daily News story critical of Young, left the paper. As of October 9, 2006, the Daily News has found no replacement for Ruskin, who reported on Alaska’s Congressional delegation. According to their publisher, Patrick Dougherty, they have nobody assigned to cover Young during one of the most important national elections since World War II.

Great Ned ad, for radio as well.
Ned Lamont just came out with an excellent statement about Lieberman’s protective behavior towards Hastert. It is up on the official blog. Here it is:
Ned Speaks on Joe’s Hastert Flip Flop
“Seventy two hours ago, Senator Lieberman said Congress can’t police itself because of conflicts of interest, but today he’s saying everyone should rest assured that Congress can police itself.”
“The only thing consistent about Senator Lieberman’s position in all of this is his willingness to criticize Republicans and Democrats who are calling for Speaker Dennis Hastert to immediately resign. Apparently in all of his grandstanding, Senator Lieberman forgot this is a very human tragedy that requires immediate action – not career politicians talking out of all sides of their mouths. This matter should be about how we best protect children – not how career politicians can best protect themselves. The fact that Senator Lieberman cannot see this shows once again why he’s part of the problem, and why it’s time for a change.”
“I once again call on Speaker Hastert to immediately resign – he cannot effectively govern the U.S. House.”

It seems worth a moment to celebrate that FDL just hit 20,000,000 visits!
Trying again with a clip and a link. Ignore at your peril (ack, where have I heard that before?).
WASHINGTON - In an unusual move, the Republican National Committee is investing heavily in television advertising in Senate races in Ohio, Tennessee and Missouri in what officials describe as a firewall strategy designed to limit Democratic gains in the Nov. 7 elections and maintain the GOP majority.

Actually the Diane Benson donation opportunity is my own egregious ActBlue page.
I added Benson after reading your impassioned pleas for supporting her.
So far it’s running about $1,000 I think. Not all of my friends feel comfortable donating thru fdl but will give thru my website.
Hope fdl will join the fun and help sponsor this excellent candidate.
Hi, pwwwww Mwwwww! How is the weather up there in Alaska today? We too contributed to Diane Benson (maybe I mentioned it already). I mention again, not to toot my horn, but to help dislodge an avalanche of contributions.
OT but about North Korea…
Does anyone else find it odd (absurd) that Bush is going to sanction North Korea for testing a nuke (meaning they already have Nuclear capabilities) but he wants (intends) to attack (nuke) Iran who do not have nuclear capabilities.
If that doesn’t prove to people how insane he is, nothing will.

Yikes! I am running out of $$ here!! But because it’s you, egregious, I cannot refuse. Just put a little something in the Diane Benson cookie jar.
Okay, so I’m going to drive down to Beverly Hills tomorrow for the PFAW shindig. I decided not to fly since I want my lipstick and my eye moisturizer with me. I’m so delicate. Black dress, check. No pearls, sigh. I might buy some new dangly earrings if I get into town early enough.
The truth is, I am upper lower class white trash — and I mean that in a good way! Also, let’s face it, I’m 53 years old! I missed the glamour train. But I will be shiny and good and on my

Ya that was one of my regrets in deciding not to blog for a while in order to shed excess responsibility-taking. Usually I am timing the rollover to the hour, it’s the statistician in me.
That, and hovering over a zero fitz opportunity at a CHS post yesterday for over 3 minutes. Now that’s just too much of a sacrifice. Not good for the soul.
On the health front I’ve been working out an hour plus every day and my blood pressure has dropped 20 points. Woohoo!
Seeya all at the future Senator WEBB debate tonight at 8pm.
BTW Bush used the word ‘proliferator’ today. In the context, it should have been plural not singular and yes, he did trip over it. Not only is North Korea dangerous for its WMDs but for the polysyllabics associated with them.
BQ @ 119
Sorry, I guess I need to agree with the majority in this poll.
Over the weekend I heard that someone on Joe’s staff (was it Dangerstein? Someone else? Sorry for the memory lapse!) said that blogs are new and great and all that good hip stuff — BUT:
that bloggers hide behind their precious ANONYMITY, and thus can throw all sorts of unfounded charges at po’ widdle Lieberliar, who thus can’t fight back against these masked attackers.
And my first thought was WTF? What are Jane Hamsher and Christy Hardin Smith? Chopped liver? Bloggers using pseudonyms?
Jeez, these people are truly pathetic. This fact is being recognized more and more everywhere, by everyone, even in SPITE of the in-the-bag corporate media.
Balrog @ 122
i gotta disagree…. i don’t think such an attack on the USA is justified.
What are the odds that Lieberman will join the Republican Party if he wins Nov. 7th?

In my early years in Russia I decided to spring for some heavy duty jewelry so that I would be less intimidated by high level people. This worked great. So many times I would be talking with such people [or on Russian television!! eek] but I stood my ground, because I HAD MY JEWELRY.

Thanks for the good news! 20 million, wooo hooo!
And thanks, too, for your comment yesterday linking to my message from a year ago using the word “Karmageddon.”
Testament to my memory problems? Yup. I had forgotten I had ever said it! Little did I know I was ever that clever! Of course, since I didn’t remember ever saying it, I have know way of knowing if I made it up myself or picked it up from some other smarty pants.
What made me laugh even harder was the archived date stamp on my original comment (in the October 2005 thread) — it said I made my comment on December 31 1969!!?! I mean, I know I was a clever kid, but I didn’t remember being THAT precocious, not to mention PRESCIENT in being able to comment on the Plame case (which the original use of “Karmageddon” was referring to) THAT far in advance. Musta been an archiving software hiccup, methinks, rather than a time machine.

If the Democratic establishment - including the Clintons - believed that Lieberman would come out as a Republican if he wins Nov. 7th, what would they being doing now? Wouldn’t Barbara Boxer, Harry Reid, even Big Dog get over to CT to appear with Lamont? I thought Hillary was going to help out. I ahven’t seen Chris Dodd showing up. Lieberman’s ad could be countered by a big Dem establishment appearance or ad for Ned - (See, he’s one of us!)
I don’t get it!!
Please don’t throw any rotten tomatoes, but I think Ned Lamont’s latest ad is a little over the top. It will definitely be remembered, and I’m sure that’s what he was looking for.

You are so right about jewelry or whatever it takes to push us a little farther down the road. Use all weapons necessary to give us the confidence and sometimes, just to distract the audience. Especially at times the shiny stuff. Rove does it all the time. He’s no genius, but it doesn’t hurt to use what works.
mrobinsong,
Maybe they’re of the Gilliard opinion (that Joe will fold at the end due to no GOTV support, no organizations to draw from, etc) — although that presupposes that the other repugs’ GOTV doesn’t carry over for him. They may think they can make more of a difference there at the final stretch, if needed.
someone posted a good take by Colin McEnroe about the fact that the Repub apathy about races other than one woman who didn’t need their help would mitigate against Joe re turnout, and his placement on the ballot is another big obstacle.

LOL!!!
Your last remark reminds me of how much Mr. K8 and I used to enjoy watching old Perry Mason reruns — for their camp value.
And then we found out, in a toss-away remark in an article, that Leo Strauss (that Machiavellian “philosophical” mentor of the PNAC crew) absolutely LOVED watching Perry Mason. For some reason never completely clear to me, he thought the program embodied every single “value” he preached to his adoring students.
Haven’t been able to watch the show since. Ruined it completely for us.
OMG, this guy is pathological
Then the audience breaks out in laughter

1,298 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Hey Firepups:
Are we beginnin’ ta see jest how corrupting the Clinton experience has been for a viable populist, progressive Democratic Party? The corporatists have taken over the superstructure of the party. First we have Joe Lockhart and Mike McCurry leading corporate assualts on the public interest thru very well-connected PR consulting firms. Then we get Rahm Emmanuel and Chuck the Bookkeeper Schumer coverin’ Mrs. Clinton’s backside, wagin’ war on Howard Dean and the DNC and maybe controlling’ the outcome of the November elections thru the DCCC and DSCC. The we have Joltin’ Joe Lieberman comin’ outta the closet in his Superman pj’s, exposin’ jest how long the fascists have been at this game. Now we find out that McCurry and Corporal Bonehead were feedin’ the Bush operation information from inside the Kerry campaign ON ELECTION NIGHT!!! WTF??!!!
While the enfranchised corporate fascist party is comin’ apart at the seams, leadership within the Democratic Party are workin’ their scrawny little asses off ta keep the jackbooters in power.
The damage to our constitution and political and legal institutions since 2000 started in 1994 with the benign neglect of William Jefferson Clinton and with the active efforts of Clintonite corporatists within the Democratic Party.
This election is the last chance for a change in direction in the country and even if the Democrats sweep, there is SOOOO much that hasta be done that I’m afraid the baby was drowned in the bathtub before the water was thrown out.

But Straussian approaches would only work in a Perry Mason-style world–i.e., a world where one person has absolute psychic knowledge of right and wrong and is able to convince others by the sheer power of his rhetoric.
My father used to say, “Why do they even have a police force in this town–why don’t they just ask Perry Mason whodunnit every time someone commits a crime?”
GWB’s neocon cabal thinks they’re Perry Masons, but they’re not even Inspector Clouseaus. (Clouseaux?)

I’d love to send Lamont some money, but from what I’m seeing he’s running either a lousy campaign or no campaign at all. I keep reading about how sleazy Lieberman is being (I agree) but where’s the fight in Ned. As soon as I see it I’ll open my wallet, until then I’ll send to Webb.
I believe that this ad is a misfire at best or potentially damaging at worst. Are you mocking the fear that the political opponent has created to retain power or are you mocking the fear that voters have about the state of affairs in the world? Is it not O.K. for voters to be fearful of the events unfolding in the world?
This ad falls under the category of unintended consequences. If the target is young, hip voters or voters who think that Bush and his henchman Lieberman have created a climate of fear to further their own political fortunes, then the ad clearly will resonate. But what about all those squishy voters, the ones in the middle? Do you think they’ll find it amusing to be laughed at for feeling wary or for a having a sense of uneasiness over the events unfolding in the world? What about the older voters? Do you think they’ll find it amusing or funny that they find the world to be a more dangerous and scary place?
Ned Lamont has had some really good ads. However this one is a little too clever by half. It has the potential to backfire. It appears to me that it has been created in a vacuum. By itself, the ad is funny. But in the context of a world that grows more dangerous every day (think of voters who worry about terrorism, Iraq, Iran, N. Korea), the ad that to some may seem funny and hip, may seem to others “unserious” and to still yet others, mocking.
Who is the ad intended to reach? What message is it supposed to deliver? While I am not on the ground in Connecticut, it appears to me that it misses it mark and may have unintended consequences. Ned already has the votes of the voter group who would find the ad funny and hip. But what about those squishy middle–of-the-road voters? Most of them are worried about Iraq and terrorism. Now along comes N. Korea testing a nuclear weapon. And what about those older voters, the ones who always take the time to vote? It’s a rapidly changing, more dangerous world for them. Not that this isn’t true of younger voters, but they’re more willing to take risks on a new approach, a new leader. There’s a reason that incumbents get re-elected easily. The voters already know them and unless they screw up a lot they tend to stay around as long as they want. That’s because a lot of voters (especially older voters and middle-of-the-road voters) don’t really give a challenger a serious hearing unless they’ve first decided they might like to change horses. Ned Lamont is doing well as a challenger because a lot of people have decided that they don’t want Lieberman to represent them anymore. But those last few votes needed to cinch the deal for Ned Lamont are always the toughest to get. They’re the voters who won’t make up their mind until the end or the voters who aren’t quite comfortable enough with Ned Lamont yet.
The ad worries me because every challenger to an incumbent Senator or Representative has to clear the hurdle of comfortability. The last few votes that win a campaign for a challenger come from the people who have finally cleared the hurdle of feeling comfortable with tossing out the “tried-and-true” incumbent and putting a new face in his/her place. It’s not unlike wearing an old shoe even after it’s way past it’s time. It fits, it’s comfortable and the wearer may know it’s time for a new shoe but they hold on to the old shoe as long as they can. At some point they become comfortable with trying on a new shoe. And then it’s goodbye old shoe. In general, the older the voter, the more risk adverse they are (they tend to stick with the incumbent).
Will one ad lose votes? No, but it may turn enough of those “last few” voters off just enough that Ned Lamont will end up having to expend a lot of work just to bring them back to the point where he can work again to try to win their votes. In other words, the unintended consequence of the ad is that it picks up the goal post and moves it farther downfield for a group of voters that the candidate may need to push him over the top .
There is a fine line in using humor in politics. I worry that this ad may cross the line for some of the voters that Ned Lamont may need. It’s O.K. to mock the political opposition using fear for political gain. It’s a potentially damaging misfire to use mocking humor in a way that can be misconstrued as mocking voter’s fears. Not only does it have the potential to alienate some voters but it can make the candidate appear as less likeable and/or “unserious” to other voters (especially older voters). Poll after poll has shown that middle-of-the-road voters don’t like the Bush policies and don’t much like Bush himself anymore. What they’re looking for is an alternative. Failure to provide an attractive alternative for many of these voters could result in a default vote for the status quo or in them not voting at all.
I’m not sure what this ad is supposed to accomplish. What it does do is appeal to the voters who already feel this way and who will vote for Ned Lamont, if they vote. At this stage in the game, is this where the campaign should be? Usually one turns to mobilizing the core voters in the final and waning days of the campaign when it’s all about the ground game - turnout. If the goal of this ad is to show voters that the opposition uses fear for political advantage then I suspect that this goal can be better met by using a non-humorous approach. Keith Olbermann has done a great job of pointing out how the Administration has used fear for political gain.
Does this ad make the best case against Lieberman? Voters tend to fire an incumbent because they perceive them as being out-of-touch, non-responsive to the needs of the community, embroiled in scandal, having impaired judgement or no longer trustworthy (having lost faith with constituents). It would appear to me that the overarching theme for any campaign against Joe Lieberman would be that he has exhibited such a stunning lack of judgement on the issues of war and peace that he can no longer be trusted to represent the people of Connecticut. The narrative to drive this point home in the last 4 weeks of the campaign easily writes itself. All messaging should reinforce the main narrative. This ad message doesn’t do that. It’s message is more tangential to the race. The ad, if developed differently, could be used to deliver a national message, from Democrats, exposing how the Bush Administration and the Republican Representatives and Senators have used a climate of fear to scare up votes. But I’m not sere that it would be money well-spent there either.
In summary, I don’t believe that this ad meets its intended objective and worse, it may actually be harmful. If I were a competent Lieberman campaign consultant, I’d welcome the ad because it leaves an open door wide enough that one could drive a political mack truck through it with middle-of-the-road and older voters.
P.S. - The latest Bob Shamansky (OH-12) animated ad very effectively ties his opponent to Bush in a funny way that cuts through the media clutter.
Was it a Greyhound, or one of those old School Buses?
Was Howard’s head seriously impacted, or were injuries minor?

My Lord, it’s funny watching you lefties freak out. Keep it up. Guess it’ll get even better when Senator Lieberman kills what’s-his-face in November.
Uh, you guys threw him under the bus, continue to castigate and vilify him at every turn, and somehow Joe Lieberman is supposed to turn the other cheek and say, “Thank you Sir, may I have another?”
Good Lord. You sow what you reap. I only hope that Joe has the good sense to not throw his support towards the caucus that stabbed him in the back when he’s re-elected.
And he will be re-elected.
That’s the most delightful part of this whole thing.
