I hope Lamont wins and never liked Lieberman that much when I lived in Connecticut, but I don’t think your graph is all that illuminating. Connecticut has (I understand) the highest per capita income in the U.S.A. So it pays a LOT of Federal taxes. It would be very strange if it got back more than it paid. After all, federal taxation is somewhat redistributive. I mean, let’s say there was a perfectly “fair” distribution of federal funds on a per capita basis all over the U.S.A. In other words, imagine that every state got highway dollars, dollars for military bases, and all other federal spending in the exact proportion of the size of their population.

In this thought experiment, you would expect Connecticut to have the worst ratio of pay in to recieve because of Connecticut’s high incomes. (I realize that Connecticut does not have universally high incomes–as anyone who has been in Bridgeport, New Haven or Hartford can tell you–but its average income is very, very high compared to the rest of the country.)

A much better measure of how well or how poorly that Joe is bringing home the bacon would be a ranking of per capita federal spending by state. As it turns out, Connecticut ranks 3rd by that measure (see http://research.greatplains.ne.....alysis.htm). This surprises me. This study only measured “pork” (earmarks aimed directly at a particular state), National Science Foundation money, and NIH money. So it can’t be said to be the last word.

In any case, it seems to me unfair to condemn Lieberman or any Connecticut politician for the ratio of tax revenues sent to the feds to fed dollars recieved. The ratio described is what you would expect from a wealthy state like Connecticut.

Bush is a carpet bagger pretending that he is a Texan. The ranch that he has in Crawford has not been in the family for a long time he just bought it in 1999 and he rents cattle.

Jane: Sidney Blumenthal mentioned that he thought Lamont should ramp up his attacks on Lieberman’s flip-flopping on Social Security “reform,” because this would rattle his base, which are CT seniors.

Did this percolate up and out of the book salon thread? Because it immediately struck me as true: for a long time I have wondered who could support Lieberman, and when SB made that comment I suddenly connected the dots.

Think about it: who supports Lieberman? Republicans and old-school
democrats and independents, right?

So wouldn’t that be (one place of oh-so many) where to hit him?

Focusing on that and his blase indifference to Foleygate, I think, could swing the momentum back to Ned.
