With the elections fast approaching in November (31 days and counting…), and the Republican party facing a full on karmageddon in the news cycles, an assessment of where things stand is in order:
– Karen Tumulty of Time has an interesting look at the problems facing the GOP — and how what they have left is grasping for power — and how that should never, ever be enough of a reason for supporting political leadership.
– The latest Newsweek polling numbers are good for Democrats and devastating for the GOP.
– The LATimes details the predatory scheme that former GOP Rep. Foley used in seducing former pages over a period of time until they reached the legal age for sexual contact. And that he's had sex with at least one that the LATimes has identified. That sort of long-term planning requires a lot of thought and cunning — so you tell me whether the Republican leadership, which has apparently known about Foley's predelictions for several years now, was doing enough to protect kids in the page program? My answer: NO. The NYTimes reports that Fordham may testify as early as next week before the House Ethics panel. The WaPo explores Foley as metaphor for the entire Republican party.
– The WaPo reports that US casualties in Iraq have reached an all-time high. And the Army is having to end-run Rumsfeld and pitch their case directly to the White House for a larger budget to be able to do their jobs and protect their forces adequately with desperately needed equipment. (Robert Dallek is the latest to call for Rummy to get the boot.)
– After being placed in her job specifically by pals Grover Norquist and Jack Abramoff, Karl Rove's assistant Susan Ralston has resigned from her position "so she doesn't provide a distraction for the White House" because she got caught with her hands elbow-deep in the lobbyist goodie bin. Which yet again raises the question for me: what exactly was it that motivated Karl Rove to "tell all" on the stand in his FIVE grand jury appearances during the Fitzgerald investigation? Hmmmm…you know, it's not really taking personal responsibility and being accountable if you are forced into it because someone catches you in wrongdoing, and you have to spill your guts to save your own ass. I'm just saying… (Some enterprising reporter ought to be digging about this issue. And I bet Murray is…)
– Five years later, Afghanistan's violence is getting worse. And Osama Bin Laden? Still at large.
And there is more bad news for the GOP — much, much more. But will this matter in terms of the election in November? THAT is the real question that Democrats ought to be asking themselves from the grassroots upward.
I keep going back to the Tip O'Neill maxim that "all politics is local." Time and time again, the sentiment that the national Republican party is a craven bunch of hack cronyism, rife with self-dealing and pork doling and pocket lining for corporate and religious and political supporters keeps reappearing in every scandal headline. Tumulty is correct in saying that holding on to power seems to be the prime motivation of the GOP these days.
But is knowing this about the party enough for individual voters in their own home districts to vote out their own representative? The person who has gotten them an earmark for their local rail trail, or bridge to nowhere or whatever.
Reader *xyz came up with a political statement that I think is brilliant in its simplicity and impact while hitting the canvassing trail for Ned Lamont in Connecticut. And I wanted to highlight it this morning for everyone else:
I went door-knocking for Lamont the other day. I found that the people were most responsive to the simple message:
“Ned Lamont will stand up to George Bush. He will not be Bush’s best friend, the way that Lieberman is. Ned Lamont will help to end the war in Iraq, bringing our troops home and reinvesting all that money in Connecticut.”
This is exactly right, I think. Ultimately, there needs to be some serious accountability in Washington, D.C. — and the Republicans have shown, over and over and over again, that they cannot be trusted to do the work necessary to hold the Bush Administration — or their own membership — accountable for wrongdoing and poor decisionmaking. The Republicans who control Congress and the White House have failed — they have failed in their foreign and domestic policy positions, they have failed to hold themselves accountable for their repeated mistakes, and they have failed to uphold their duty to protect the Constitution and to work for the good of the American public ahead of their own craven interests in money and power. And shame on them.
While the GOP may be pushing itself over a cliff with the sheer weight of all of its party transgressions over the past few years, Democrats cannot let up in their fight all the way to the finish line in November.
If anything, now is the time to do more work — to get out the vote, to push the door-to-door canvassing, to make the phone calls, to redouble efforts to send out postcards and contact likely voters and set up rides for friends and family and neighbors to the polls…whatever it takes. This nation of ours desperately needs a change in leadership — and it is up to each and every one of us to ensure that the work gets done to get us there. If you haven't signed up to help a local candidate, or put signs in your front yard, or helped out in any way, it's a great week to jump into the political fray. We could really use your help!
Had enough? Work for a democratic win in November. Vote for Democrats. And get folks that you know in your community to do the same. It really is that simple.
(Great Time cover this month. H/T to aReader for the heads up on this one. Also, huge H/T to whomever coined the "karmageddon" in the comments earlier this week — I've searched back through, but can't find that comment, so if anyone remembers who that was, I'd love to update with a specific thank you. UPDATE: The "karmageddon" kudos go to reader "lurkers-r-us" — really good one.)

Gad! My timing is just incredible lately. Bwaahahaha! :D
And if you long ago stopped trusting Carville, you’re right. Take your blood pressure meds for this one.
OfT, Pach, thanks for a great post last night and congrats on the Mets.
Karmageddon … that’s good.

Much wittier than “Something-or-other-gate.”
Why did Time magazine put a picture of Lieberman on their cover?

Aw, well, the post was okay. The Mets made me happy!
Thanks.

For that to occur everyone involved in the PI (Preliminary Investigation) at the FBI would have to march in lock step with the White House. Do you honestly think that’s possible?
I don’t.
More likely the PI (Preliminary Investigation) didn’t find anything so it was dropped.
Pachacutec @ 3
Long ago would’ve been about the time Jimbo got hitched to the shilliest of Repug spinsters, Mary Matalin.
Anyone kowtowing to Jimbo’s spiel after that point had a serious reasoning deficit.
About those polls . . .
Just a heads up for anyone with a landline phone that has caller ID. We don’t answer calls from private callers or from numbers we don’t recognize–just let answer machine pick up. However, a few weeks ago I picked up before checking the caller ID and it was an opinion poll. Since then I have had 4 other opinion polls call me. 3 of the polls were for local or state races but 2 were for broad generic national polls, the latest being Thursday night (with lots of Foley questions). I don’t know why my number is coming up, but just in case any of you want to get in on the polling data–don’t ignore the long-distance numbers you don’t recognize or the private numbers. It was great to do my part in setting the record straight (at least on polling data).
sjvalleygal @ 13
Consider the implications for poll sampling validity, folks.
Coz @ 11. Here’s what I think – I think that the Republicans are coming out over and over (even with students who seemed like plants on reliable sources this morning) saying,
Democrats have manipulated this leak to take place right before the elections.
Then, when or if pressed, they say – no evidence “yet”
So IMO the appropriate response is,
The President and Attorney General Gonzales have covered up or Folely and Hastert and despite having the emails, have buried the investigation.
Then, when pressed, the Dem can claim the same sources and evidence at the Republican – iow, nothing yet.
As to marching in lock step, I don’t have much faith in anyone anymore. How long for anything on the Tenet & Black briefings to come out? How many people do you think knew? Clarke, BenVeniste, Ashcroft, his staffers and deputies, Rice, Hadley, Tenet, Black, their staffs, …
Take a look at the Arar situation. How long for anything to come out and all the smears that would continue unchecked here in this country if not for the Canadian investigation. How many people knew and were willing to let the man be kidnapped and tortured, then continue in torture for months, etc.
How long was Padilla held in military detention based in large part on tortured confessions of a crazy man?
You find me the good guys, cuz I’m not seeing any these days.
Accountability is important. Perhaps essential. Particularly in politics, where millions and millions of lives are in the balance. We say we are a nation of laws. And I firmly believe this. Accountability in politics serves the purpose of ‘if you do such and such; this then will be the result’. Without “accountability” we are a nation of authoritarianism, not laws. This is unacceptable and abhorrent. It is at once unlawful. Such behavior is immoral and it IS perhaps most importantly, against ‘natural law’.
There must be an impeachment inquiry begun after the Democratic Congressional take back soon to be. Irrespective of the political impossibility of full impeachment hearings. We have to send a message to our children that political lawless in not without grave consequences. Otherwise we will lose the respect of our kids.
Mary,
It was the FBI that blew the whistle on the interrogations at Gitmo. They didn’t want any part of it. So there’s one thing ; )
“Ned Lamont will stand up to George Bush. He will not be Bush’s best friend, the way that Lieberman is. Ned Lamont will help to end the war in Iraq, bringing our troops home and reinvesting all that money in Connecticut.”
The special guest admiral candidate who was here yesterday said much the same thing, and it’s a simple point that anyone can understand-I’ve used it with my co-workers and others. My argument is: This is the country that built the A-Bomb in three(?) years flat (leaving aside the moral questions, as a technological feat it’s nothing short of remarkable, given the technology of the time) This is the country that put men on the moon nearly 40 years ago.
Bush has mortgaged the country to the tune of half-a-trillion dollars in his pursuit of a resource that A) is going to run out anyway, and B) causes enormous damage to the planet. Don’t you think that money would have been better spent on using the proven technological smarts of the US to come up with an alternative to oil? One that would free us from the Middle East FOREVER? A technology that we could export to the rest of the world, creating jobs for Americans. Bush is hurting America, not making it safer.
Most people get this argument.
Rant over.
The whole time Foley was in congress he was trolling the pages for dates. Jeez, that’s sick. And how calculating to wait until the pages leave DC to really get personal with them. But that was part of the scheme, to prey on the kids insecurities (as all teens have) by getting personal after they leave. Foley wasn’t being nice to them because they were in the Capitol and it was part of his job, he was really interested in them.
The page in the LATimes article was 21 when he had sex with Foley, so it wasn’t criminal, just sad.
Re: polls.
I have had so-called product consumer opinion polls attempted (not since I wised up), where they slid in the political questions that were the real goal of the polls after about five minutes.
Without “accountability” we are a nation of authoritarianism, not laws.
Yes.
Accountability = Democracy.
Impunity = Dictatorship.
Which is why I want the elections and the media to work properly.
Hi Mary!
I thought I saw a FDL reference that you were writing Diaries over at Kos. I searched under Mary and found two,
What Foley Shows Us About Republican Corruption
and
Al Gore’s Global Warming Crisis Action List
but I didn’t think you were the author.
I don’t go over there much, are you posting Diaries over there?
Mary @ 15
By saying these things, I think they know they have abandoned the moderates and are only talking to their rabid base. They need some excuse to motivate the base to vote. I don’t think they actually expect anyone outside the base to take this seriously. It’s pure desperation.
Taegon Goodard in politicalwire.com says a Univ. of CT poll shows Lamont is way behind Liarman. Was there such a poll?
YouTube banned a Michelle Malkin video about Islamofascists.
LMAO.
NYT’s has a YouTube up of Michelle complaining to YouTube. I refuse to link to it.
Karen at 24 — not that I have seen. Have you checked the blog over at Ned’s website? Tim is usually on top of every new poll as it comes out. I don’t recall seeing that, but I haven’t checked this morning — been busy with The Peanut and some company most of the morning today…
karen allen @ 24
There’s been a lot of debate about this at FDL lately.
Pollster .com show that the two most recent Zogby and Rasmussen polls both show Ned suddenly ten points behind. That drop happened in seven days. Prior to that Ned was within two points according to both. Something happened, but I’m not sure what yet. CT Bob was on last night and sounded confident.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 16
I think this should have some serious discussion by the Dems in Congress. There are many strategic and tactical pros and cons to understand.
I’m personally in favor of it. I’d prefer a “long, drawn out” impeachment process for both Darth and Junya in order to neuter them as much as possible for the remaining 2 years of this administration.
And a related question for Christy, Mary or other legal folks:
In a reading of the US Constitution, Art. II, Sec. 2, which states that the President:
“shall have power to grant reprieves and pardons for offenses against the United States, except in cases of impeachment“.
Does this mean that a President cannot issue any pardons when the President is under impeachment assault?
Or does this mean the President cannot pardon anyone who has been impeached?
Or both? *g*
Cleanup at aisle 27.
Christy – I see two corrections: predelictions should be predilections, and then there’s
GrverGrover.Speaking of Grover Norquist, what economic philosphy inspired him to come up with his idea of making the government small enough to drown in a bathtub? Was he trying to privatize all the functions of the federal governemt?
I’m intrigued by your comments about Susan Ralston and Karl Rove. I wish we knew more about what motivated Rove to “tell all” in his grand jury appearances, knowing what we know now and what we are finding out about the CIA leak case and the Abramoff and Foley scandals. Connecting the dots from the CIA leak case to the Abramoff and Foley scandals might enable us to find out not only what motivated him to “tell all”, but also to enable us to determine the extent, if any, to which the aforementioned scandals are interrelated.
It’s not just corruption (e.g. Abramoff), incompetence (e.g. Katrina), treason (Plame), and no accountability (everything).
PervGate also reveals the inability of the GOPederasts to tell the truth. Half-asstert, Boner, Reynolds, and the rest of the noble crew can’t get their stories straight. They’ll say whatever is expedient for them at a given moment, subject to revision whenever Karl finally tells them what the cover story will be.
Republicans can’t be trusted to tell the truth about anything.
Thanks, Christy. I went over to the Lamont blog. They say the Stamford Advocate just completed a poll showing Liarman, 42%, Lamont 39%, and Republican Candidate Schlesinger with 4%.
And which candidate are the Republicans supporting? It’s certainly not Schlesinger!
The CW from Time is so completely wrong so often that this cover terrifies me.
In all seriousness I’ve been planning to buy my first house the week Time runs a cover saying “The Housing Bust: Is It Different This Time? Why some experts think we’ll never recover.”
There are so many good possibilities among the Democrats for the nomination for president in 2008. The Democrats are poised to win both houses of Congress in a few weeks. And we will win. But with such a short time (about 24 months) left to replace Bush, we need to turn our eyes to the huge prize. We must do this right after our upcoming win this fall. It’s difficult to choose between so much good Democratic potential presidential timber. Most of our Democrat presidential wannabes are great. A few. A very few, are less than great.
re: Carville…co-option of spokespeople, strategists, pundits, journalists, and Not-for-Profits that were more or less sympathetic to the Left has been one common thread throughout the Repubs rise to power. Look at all the moles…Lieberman, Zell Miller, the most obvious. And what about NARAL and even Human Rights Campaign now, infiltrated and used as Republican stooges. And Carville and his wife…how about no more marriages with the enemy, and Andrea Mitchell, and so many more. Co option by the Right has been part of their long term strategy of neutering all opposition. Sickening. Soon it will be time to clean house of this filth.
Mad Dogs at 9 — THANKS!
I would ask Republicans when is it a ‘good’ time to disclose a child sexual predator in Republican leadership? For them, obviously never.
Has anyone heard from marksb lately? Haven’t seen him around since he told everyone about the cancer diagnosis, and I’m wondering how he is doing. Thought maybe I’d missed an update in the comments since I’ve had in-laws and company for the last two weeks, and I wanted to check to see if anyone else had seen him around. Anyone?
Why not?

As long as you’re getting a fixed rate mortgage, you should be fine. IMHO, and I’m not a financial advisor, nor do I play one on the internet! ;)
yes invest the money we spend on the war on America. Maybe we can help detroit create some hybrid car tech and put the autoworkers back to work. Then make every car a hybrid or diesal in the USA. With lower demand for gas gas prices will collapse and help our economy while at the same time it will dry up Ossama’s cash flow from oil producing Arab states. Tell me how Iran will get nuke tech if they can’t pay for it. Defeating an enemy WITHOUT GOING TO WAR. Sun Tze would approve
Coz at 40 — dang, I thought I might have missed him, then. *g* But I didn’t realize it was that close in time. lol

James Carville and Mary Matalin put on a good show and enrich themselves personally by doing so. Ever seen the American Express ad showing all the things they bought with their AE card? They both appear on whatever show, fight like dogs on air, then leave hand in hand.

jinny at 49 — I’ve got something coming up momentarily on that — appalling stuff.
I realize that the cover of the NY Times magazine is NOT about the trouble that the Rethugs are having ( and unfortunately, the online edition does not print a pic of the cover to link to), but I think that if you click on to the link below to the cover article, you can truly appreciate the irony. I loved it.

OT a bit. I have two phone numbers on the same wire, one is for my fax machine. The fax number gives a double ring when it is dialed. Since I keep the fax turned off to prevent spam, I mostly just pick up the phone when I hear the double ring and quickly hang up, but the other day I answered.
Turned out to be the Nielsen Ratings people. I answered a few questions as to viewing habits and the lady said she would send a log book for each tv set in the house. I’m looking forward to skewing their results just the tiniest bit away from the usual suspects towards Free Speech TV, C-span, and Bill Moyers.
Note that the call was to my unlisted fax number, they had to be calling blind. They didn’t ask many demographic questions, wanted to know my age range, did I have any kids. I don’t know how they characterize their sample population, but it seems that random dialing is in the mix.
The caller mentioned the dairy had space for comments. I have a few already. Can you think of any?
Hey, Hey, (stomping foot) Don’t I get some love for Remembering that I saw KARMAgeggon on some thread? huh? *g* Now, what is countdowns email again….
ah, my 15 minutes of FDL fame :) better enjoy it while it lasts. i must admit to having some anguish lifted re: dems prospects in nov due to the foley debacle, but i am waiting for the other rethug shoe to drop. and btw, does anyone else think it is hugely weird that hastert lives with his chief of staff??????? that screams closet to me.
NRCC chief Tom Reynolds — who’s supposed to be spending all his time helping other GOP Reps keep their jobs — is now losing by an eye-opening 15 points to Dem challenger Jack Davis, according to a new Zogby International poll done for the Buffalo News.

Maybe that’s why Reynolds was a no show on This Week. Heh, heh, heh.
that screams closet to me
Other commenters have mentioned that it’s not that unusual for Congressional staffs.
FWIW, our beloved Mrs. K8 used the term Karmageddon in an FDL comment almost a year ago. Lurker, I hope it was a beautiful 15 minutes.
BTW, Christy’s offering a new thread.

And yet, we still should mention it. They would! We have to stop fighting napalm with matches.

John Casper @ 27
I wouldn’t trust Rasmussen to read my weight off a scale, but Zogby at least used to be somewhat credible. Hard to know what’s going on, although I still think poll sampling has to suffer when current telecommunications make so many registered voters inaccessible.
Frank Probst @

Actually, I think it’s a rather good picture. Very true-to-life.
EvilDrPuma @ 66
First of all – Joe is using the Republican money he has raised to blanket the airwaves with ads. Of course they don’t put Ned in a favorable light. Secondly – most polls after the primary showed Ned from 2 to 10 points behind Lieberman. Have no idea how Zogby got the number it released in it’s latest poll – it was clearly an outlier.
Hopefully, the Lamont campaign will begin putting out ads that start hammering Joe. Ned got a lot of great endorsements this week – and canvassing is really gearing up. And there will be three debates, during which residents get to see whiney, lying Joe in action (and perhaps rude and angry Joe, too). And finally, there were some good pieces in the Hartford Courant about Ned today.
Republicans and lobbyists are pouring money into Joe’s campaign so they can keep him in office – that’s the difference between the primary and the campaign now. I’d say Ned is being outspent three to one.
I have to admit my first thought when I saw the cover was how on earth did they ever get a nude picture of Denny Hastert’s big fat butt?
A few quibbles with the Time article:
