How come we don't hear anything coming out of the LieberLiar campaign any more about what a good Democrat Joe is, how he voted with his party 90% of the time, all his "liberal" (*choke*) interest group endorsements, and the fact that Ned Lamont is practically the Strom Thurmond of Greenwich? Without question, this has been the most schizophrenic campaign in recent history. And the people most likely to be persuaded by either side of the conflicting rhetoric are not necessarily the sharpest tools in the shed.
With each passing day Lieberman depends more and more on the least motivated voters. Least motivated to turn out, I mean. A Republican or conservative-unaffiliated who doesn't like the war, who doesn't like Bush and who is now appalled by the Foley scandal, has less incentive to go to the polls. That voter thinks: Jodi Rell doesn't need me, and I don't like anybody else.
Add to that Lieberman's position on the ballot which is basically a crossword puzzle coordinate. Five down, three across. He is the Waldo of the Connecticut voting booth.I think the Foley scandal will keep evangelicals home on Election Day, but they're not such a big factor in this state. Voters who are motivated to save any of the three incumbent Republican congresspersons may or may not hunt around for Joe while they're in the booth.If Lamont can make it a little closer by November than it is right now, he will have a better chance than most people give him in the long, strange trip of this campaign.
The Republicans had also, at that moment, spoken forcefully about their own vision of Joe Lieberman. On Aug. 9, they held in their hands the unique formula that allows Connecticut to elect a Republican U.S. senator, once ever 36 years or so. It is a near-impossibility, unless the Democrats spilt themselves, as they did in 1970 and again this year. A strong Republican candidate would have had a plausible chance at the brass ring, and the fact that the state and national Republican leadership decided to leave Schlesinger in place tells you what they think of all that messaging by Lieberman about what a good Democrat he is and how he votes 133 percent of the time with his party. The Republicans, anyway, dismiss all that as hogwash. From Karl Rove on down, they decided they already had a pretty good Republican senator in Joe Lieberman.

Lamont will win.
Score a zero from downunder! It is hard to tell from here, but it seems Ned has lost some of the fire that was in the campaign for the primary. No Kiss Float (though I understand that’s not his to control) and less media attention. Of course, at this distance it is very hard to know. I went to HS in CT but that was so long ago I have lost touch with the state.

I propose a new rule: each scandal must have a new name that does not end in “Gate”. The Foley/Pages/Hastert mess should be able to inspire a catchy phrase of its own. Come on Fire Pups, I know you can do it.
The Foley Pages. Sounds like a good name.

Since things seem quiet, any thoughts on my idea to do a little fund raising to get FDL more server power for election day? I’m happy to kick in but am in no position to organize it.
The near melt down 8/8 should be a wake up call that this where people want to be on days like that.
After the victory in a few weeks, and if we run the right candidate for the grand prize in 2008, and we keep motoring up the progressive turnpike, and doing our job, then the people will keep us. Far into the future.
Mr. Lamont goes to Washington soon.

Forget Foley, the bullseye is on Hastert!
Talking about Foley works for the GOP. Hastert doesn’t ; )
What about Boehner? Hastert’s controller.
I don’t understand Lieberman.
Why has he decided to stand so strongly with the Republicans and I realize that this question may have already been answered.
I don’t remember him voting with Democrats since the 2004 election. Well I hope he did…

OT, but news keeps pouring in. Republican Rep. Tom Reynolds (D-NY-Coverup) was interviewed by the Buffalo News in an article published yesterday. During the interview:
This struck me:
What is he implying? That he checked out with the “Page Board” whether Foley should run again? Seems doubtful. But he did ask Hastert whether Foley should run again? That is, he did a “review” before imploring Foley not to retire, but to run for his seat again?
Furthermore,
He was decided uncurious:
And then there is this, which indicates that the Republicans still cannot put children ahead of protecting other Republicans:
Or has somebody already blogged this Buffalo News article here?
Anyway, Reynolds now down 15 points.
But we still have 30 days to go, so we should not get complacent. Walk the precincts. GOTV.
“I’ve thought the bloggers were getting too much credit for [Lamont’s success] from the get-go,” said Monaghan. “The bloggers reflect the zeitgeist more than create it.”
For Dan Gerstein, the communications director for the Lieberman campaign, political blogging in Connecticut has been largely a mixed bag.
“I personally am a fan of blogging, I think it’s a really exciting development that has the potential to dramatically democratize the political landscape,” said Gerstein. “But I would say, in our campaign, for the most part blogs have been used as sort of an underground railroad for misinformation about Joe Lieberman’s record.”
Lieberman’s campaign finds the resounding anonymity associated with these blogs — and their reluctance to speak with the press just a few weeks before the election — to be disturbing.
“Their silence speaks volumes,” said Gerstein. “They want anonymity, but they don’t want accountability. When a newspaper reporter writes a story, they put their name on it, and they have to defend it.
“As someone who’s a fan of blogging, that’s a real threshold issue,” said Gerstein. “If people don’t trust it, or don’t think it’s believable, they won’t pay attention to it.”

That 8/8 event was a one-off thing that took us all down — C&L, Atrios, Kos, etc. When people couldn’t get into one they tried to get into the others and everyone just got hit repeatedly; even with Kos-sized servers we couldn’t prevent it. It was a domino effect.
We have beefed up our system since then and Jamie and John have been working on software stuff to keep us from overloading again. But we apprecite your willingness to support us — I think John just did some tinkering with the server that speeded us up.

I know that lots of folks are looking for movement in the Ned/Joe race and wondering why no big headlines. I think we have to remember that an incumbent being challenged in a primary was an anomaly. It got lots and lots of media because of it. The race was also in the middle of August and not much else whas happening. Now there are so many races being hotly fought, not to mention all of the scandals, revelations, books, NIE reports, etc. that the reporters are running around themselves just trying to keep up. Lots of competition for those headlines.
If Joe keeps stepping in it like he did for CTBob on film, and if the local press picks up on it, and if Ned starts fighting back harder, this will happen.
Meanwhile there are lots of races for folks to get involved with close to their homes. If not, send $$, make phone calls, do what you can.
Vigilance!

Hi all! I was out sailing since yesterday morning, and didn’t get back until a few hours ago. I missed all the nice things you said about my video with Joe yesterday until just now. So…Thank you.
The Joe video is doing really great on Youtube; it’s up over 10,000 hits. People are getting to see Joe being the phony politician we all know he is.
Kirby is doing a fantastic job with getting out and interviewing people on tape; unlike myself, she can actually think on her feet and follow up complex questions with insightful queries. She is a star!
We’ve got 30 days to go. We’re gearing up to go on the offensive. There might be some kind of float back around that people have been asking about, but I don’t think I can say anything about it yet. Joe is getting to the point where he sees my stupid grinning face in his dreams almost every night.
And Lieberman campaign manager Sherry Brown just sent me two tickets to the October 23rd senate debate…courtesy Joe2006.com.
I think that was awfully sweet of her.
I read the following this afternoon and thought it summed up Joe the Panderer pretty good!
Real political independents don’t lose their party primary and suddenly convert to being an independent just to cling to their seats.
Real political independents are for change and new, fresh, better solutions. They are not interested in 18-year incumbents whose poor judgment was instrumental in causing the problems we are now trying to solve. Real independents are looking for some shred of accountability and responsibility in Washington for the blunders that have been made by the people Joe Lieberman consistently supported: George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld.
In Connecticut’s U.S. Senate race, Joe Lieberman is trying to be - simultaneously - the de facto Republican candidate, a Democrat and an independent. He may think this is a clever political ploy or some evidence of nonpartisanship. But real independents see through this kind of “politrick” and recognize it for what it really is: pandering.

I dig all the Joe domain names, but I’m not sure how to utilize them. One of my blogger pals went out and got “connecticutforlieberman.com” as soon as Joe announced his new “party of one”, and he has some good stuff posted there.
As far as those other domain names, feel free to redirect them to connecticutbob.com or connecticutforlieberman.com, or any of the other blogs you like.
And thanks again for saying the nice things about the video. I was tempted to interrupt Joe while he was double-talking and free associating, but it all looked so…perfect…that I had to let it go.
Besides, I’m trying to dispell the theory that we’re all “angry lefty bloggers”. Just having a friendly smile on my face while Joe babbles is my most potent weapon.
Well…that, and my camera.

My understanding is that it’s another Pug. I could be wrong, though. Everyone seems to “know” but noone is naming names, yet.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 39
Yep - exactly. I think that all CT Dems who have worked so hard on Lamont’s campaign should change their registration from Dem to Unaffiliated in protest - if Lamont loses.
I have called and spoken with so many voters in CT and really the main source of confusion is that after 18 years, Lieberman is no longer the Democratic candidate. We continue to stress that Ned Lamont won the primary and is the Democratic candidate, and that because he lost, Lieberman left the party so he could run on his own (I keep the snark to a minimum but would love to riff on the Connecticut for Lieberman party of one situation).
All that aside, the way Lamont’s campaign has been handled by the “Dem Leadership” is disgusting and inexcusable. Lieberman caused the “awkward” situation, not Lamont. The leadership is insulting all those who came out in record numbers to vote for Lamont by their stance. Our opinions are clearly not of consequence in terms of their political calculations. That being the case, I’m sure they won’t mind if thousands of Dems switch their affiliation to “Unaffiliated” if the unspeakable happens and Ned were to lose.

My thoughts would be that this is the usual dirty political tricks by Rove and endemic of the Republican ‘race’ as it has evolved. I say ‘race’ because it is my firm belief that the Bush’s are thoroughly convinced they are better, qualitatively speaking, than the unwashed masses. Of which I include myself. Naturally. I would actually consider it to be a sort of blue badge of courage to be considered one of ‘the unclean by the Bush royal family.

I would surmise the Republicans and their religious nut-base has de facto already done this.
Kolbe Saw Foley’s Messages In 2000
Another Republican congressman knew of disgraced former representative Mark Foley’s inappropriate Internet exchanges as far back as 2000 and personally confronted Foley about his communications.
A spokeswoman for Rep. Jim Kolbe (R-Ariz.) confirmed yesterday that a former page showed the congressman Internet messages that had made the youth feel uncomfortable with the direction Foley (R-Fla.) was taking their e-mail relationship. Last week, when the Foley matter erupted, a Kolbe staff member suggested to the former page that he take the matter to the clerk of the House, Karen Haas, said Kolbe’s press secretary, Korenna Cline.

~~~Local bloggers are talking about the English deviance connect now that the Foley scandal has broken. This one looks very similar– Republicans and the establishment shielding a suspicious case from investigation.
Now it looks like eyewitnesses to English’s arrest are coming foreword and this story may break big enough to at least cause a serious investigation into the allegations. A state representative from English’s district, with intimate knowledge of one of the arrests, involving English and a teenage male prostitute, has told friends that this is the week the local media will be confronted with the facts. Stay tuned! Meanwhile, Blue America’s latest video highlights Steve Porter’s valiant race against English and his grotesque record of non-accomplishment.~~~
John Casper- re: polling in CT- a repeat of earlier posts-
OT–Lamont polls- I just went and checked out the polls at pollster.com. Statistically, there is no point in including polls that only have a single point, because there is no way to compare these data, over time, and each poll has a unique bias/audience. The only three polls that have multiple data points are- Rassmusen, Zogby Interactive, and Quinnipiac.
Percentages are Lieberman adv. over Lamont.
In the 4 R polls after primary 5% > 2% > 2% > 10%
In the 3 ZI polls after primary 10% > 4% > 2%
In the 2 Q polls after the primary 12% > 10%, but Q poll data 1st was random voters, 2nd likely voters. Hard to interpret these two points, thus.
Most of the alarm seems to have been created by the entry of the Zogby Poll (not the interactive one)- first entry, no data points to compare; and the Rassumsen poll change from 2% adv to 10% adv Lieberman.
Disclaimer- I am not a statistician. Wish Bobby G were here. But, I do look at data a lot in my job. At this point, I just don’t see any evidence, based on these data, that Ned is falling behind. And, he has clearly gained in name recognition. If anything, my own look at the polls says it’s 50/50 L/L at this point- though I wish Lamont had already moved ahead. As Jane has said, 4 weeks is a long time, in the current environment. And, the more people know about Lamont, the more they will like him. The more people know more about Lieberman, the less they will like him. I am feeling much more optimistic having looked more closely at the polling data, rather than just responding to
