for the week ending 10/7/06:
Synopsis: Rush Fox, a professor of ethics at Yale, is called upon by a fellow college secret society member to investigate a scandal that has erupted in the nation's capital. Four weeks prior to a major election, a well-respected Republican congressman has been accused of sexual improprieties with underaged congressional pages, forcing him to resign, ruining his career, driving the Republican party into a tailspin and ensuring that the Democrats regain the House and/or the Senate. The implications for the government, the pharmaceutical and military industries, and for rich people everywhere, pleads his friend, would be disastrous. Can Professor Fox find the wellsprings of these lies in time to save the election?
As he makes his way around the D.C. cocktail circuit, Professor Fox uncovers an unholy nexus of power, religion, and Hollywood corruption. His probing threatens to disrupt the ultra-secret Opie Day, a loosely knit organization of liberals, women, homosexuals, minorities, Jews, Episcopalians, Baptists, Catholics, World War II, Korean, Vietnam, and Iraq I & II veterans, retired generals, union workers, and the National Education Association, all hell-bent on the same goal: wresting control of Congress away from the Republicans and implementing their mad plan for peace, universal health care, and fiscal responsibility for the country.
As Fox draws closer to the truth, and with the support of the online conservative commentariat, he is joined by Joenas, an albino monk who was cast out of Opie Day because of his unwavering devotion to the President and the Iraq War, and French journalist David Rivulets, who seeks to recapture his glory days as a Beltway pundit. In a mad dash against time and the evil forces of justice, the three men discover the source of power in a basement caucus room in the Capitol Building, where a soft-spoken, Democratic grandmother from San Francisco named Nancy Pelosi heads up the secret organization and steers the United States on its path to an ill-advised liberation from right-wing ideals.

Yeah, I know. The truth is stranger than fiction.
However, as Travis G. at Sadly, No! illustrates, some people live in alternate realities:
This column is directed entirely to the sleazy, scuzzy, unprincipled and entirely Machiavellian Democratic political operative who helped design the careful plan resulting in the fingerprint-free leak of Mark Foley e-mails:
Bravo!
This whole Foley business is one of the most dazzling political plays in my or any other lifetime – like watching an unassisted triple play or a running back tossing a 90-yard touchdown pass on a double-reverse.
For reasons having to do almost entirely with funding the war in Iraq, I am profoundly concerned about the consequences of a Democratic takeover of the House of Representatives. But as a close student of American political gamesmanship, I so admire what you’ve accomplished that I almost have to root for a Democratic landslide in November.
Sometimes, you gotta wonder whether all that hair on J-Pod's back has somehow cut off the bloodflow to his brain.
The Rude One isn't so quick to get sucked up into the Foley-o imbroglio:
Again and again and again, Democrats forget the rule that Karl Rove lives by: "Everything they do is wrong; everything we do is right." And that's right down the fuckin' line. Every cloud has a silver lining. Every wet spot is a chance to gather DNA. Every fuck-up is an opportunity. Every sign of weakness must be exploited. That's because it's what fires up the base. It's gonna happen on the Mark Foley debacle. Right now everyone's running around without Rove's black leather gloved slap of guidance. But soon, Rove will figure out how to spin this into something to attack Democrats with.
The Editors at The Poor Man Institute gives us a quick primer on pedophilia.
Kvatch at If I Ran the Zoo prepares the Republicans for the grieving process, while Atttaturk at Rising Hegemon prepares the counter-assault. The 110% heterosexual General J.C. Christian, Jesus' General, explains the "measuring" comment Foley made in his instant messages. And TBogg provides the proper signage for the Florida congressional election, now that Mr. Foley is IM-ing from rehab.
Uggabugga's Quiddity puts it all in perspective.
The people at Huffington Post spot tomorrow's headlines, while NTodd at Dohiyi Mir highlights yesterday's.
Elsewhere in the ether:
Shakespeare's Sister gives the mainstream media a nice bitchslap wake-up call. After all, Keith Olbermann can't do it all by himself.
Roy Edroso at alicublog bitchslaps John "It's Okay if the Girls are Underaged" Derbyshire's interpretation of Christianity in the wake of the Amish country shootings, and August J. Pollack wryly notes that the NRA channeled more money into the Pennsylvania races after the girls' funerals.

They really do seem to be arguing that Nancy Pelosi somehow tricked the entire Republican leadership into covering this up until right before the election. Maybe she’s a Jedi or something. If so, wouldn’t it be cool to have a Jedi as Speaker of the House?
Frank Probst @
3
Better a Jedi than Jabba.
And at the CorrenteWire organized L.A. Blogger’s Association party last night, one of the debates was:
“Gannon’s bottom in the White House: McClellan, or Rove. Discuss.”
It’s going to be nip ‘n tuck as far as peace breaking out after this November. The chance for more war, not less, is the worry. No matter the Democratic win in weeks, we still have Bush, Rove, Rice and Rumsfeld. Major turbulence possible, perhaps probable ahead. The Republicans are scared, they’re in a corner, and extremely dangerous.
As for Pelosi, this person makes me feel far more comfortable than some few Democrats I could mention.
Frank Probst @ 3
And the Jedi mind trick only worked on Republicans, because those tricks only affect the simple-minded.
Thanks watertiger.
Per your book jacket cover, one of the GOP talking points today was “Nancy Pelosi” will be the Speaker of the House. Nancy Pelosi has very low name recognition. To me this suggests how desperate the GOP is to find something to say.
I am just amazed that some democratic operative managed to bolt a remote control device to Foley’s libido……………………….It’s the only explanation that makes any sense.

When will we see the Republican counter attack. I’m a wimp. I’m scared.

And meanwhile, the U.S. Navy shows what it thinks about defense lawyers in its ranks by refusing Lt. Cmdr. Charles Swift (attorney for Hamdan) a promotion, which under military rules ends his distinguished 20-year Navy career.
He says that, even with such results, he would do it all again because “All I ever wanted was to make a difference.”
A credit to the rule of law and the ethics of lawyers.

I’m not telling you not to be scared, but Rove had all week to prep for the Sunday talk shows. They determine in large part what gets covered this week and imho the best Rove had was to try and scare people with the prospect of the first woman Speaker of the House. Prepare for more Hastertgate, who knew what, when; seasoned liberally with STATE OF DENIAL and more bad poll numbers for the GOP.
Peter VE @ 23
LOVE it!
Rove is fucking toast. It’s called reality and real humans, you fucking little nazi prick. Eat it.
OT – I wanted to share a message for the Lamont campaign that I posted over on their official blog.
I was up in CT volunteering this weekend and I just thought of an excellent way to combine our door-knocking outreach with the “Friends and Family” program.
At each headquarters, each volunteer who returns at the end of a full day of door-knocking should be given a photocopy of the information sheet for all of the people whose doors they have knocked on during that day.
Then, during the next week, the volunteer can follow up by sending a postcard through “Friends and Family” to all of the people on the list who were either pro-Ned, undecided, or not home.
I think that the combination of “Friends and Family” with our door-knocking program could be extremely effective!
People are very likely to appreciate getting a friendly personalized postcard a week or two after speaking with a Ned supporter.
Bush is the Unitary president. He says he’s a unitard.
Rove is trying to scare people with Nancy Pelosi?

watertiger @ 26
You forgot those scary Quakers……
God if Ned doesn’t beat that chimplickin piece of fuck, I will fucking shoot myself. Well not really. But goddammit.
OT:
The conceit that the sun will shine, peace will be bustin’ out all over, and America will be forgiven for its transgressions should the Democrats carry the day a month hence should be avoided at all costs.
Many here may remember the paroxysms that Watergate visited on the American psyche…Paroxysms so severe that the nation almost broke its back figuratively trying to avoid repeating them during Iran-Contra, to the detriment of the nation.
The fact that so many of the same players are suited up is far from coincidence.
They were mildly chastised then, and expect no punishment now, in spite of the fact that their crimes and proclivities have grown so much more…ostentatious.
The body politic, whatever their ideologies, are only self-deluding if they should mistake short-term gain for long term solution.
The fight for justice and freedom is forever…a lifetime commitment for our children, and the future.
Guess everybody’s out weed whacking, which I should be too, but FDL and YouTube vids of women kissing are so much better than domestic chores…plus it’s a long weekend…
You have to wonder whether the main MSM are not also getting weary of Mr. Rove. Now that Olbermann and other news have given them some cover, maybe they will be happy to shove the knife in.
Rove is NOT a genius, he is simply sociopathic in his amorality.
There is no good way out of this debacle for him or the Preznit. Check out the NYDaily News article which states the Gee-Dubb is in a “black mood.” I wanna see a total meltdown on live teevee — it may happen yet. A full-on Captain Queeg moment.
The only thing they can do is pull a PNAC stunt with the Pentagon weaponry, tossing some at Iran. Or Syria. Or Venezuela.
OTOH, if they try to do that, the (non-civilian) military very well may pull the rug out from under them, one way or another.
Gotta love the new Time Magazine cover pic, even if Time has such an egregious recent history of suckitude. (Y’all saw that, right? The rear end of an elephant, walking into the darkness.)
Yesterday it was pointed out in the newspapers that Wall Street political donations are going, in the main, to Dems (just in the low fifties, percentage-wise, but still…a bellwether.)
You don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.
Thanks for the very funny post, watertiger.
Darkblack – your comment is very important – recognizing that the lack of justice during previous excapades has led this group to feel invincible … we are all paying now for that failure.

you should see the ads running for Talent
in MO. I’m on my way across the state line to see The US vs John Lennon with a friend who was to run against Claire years ago in the state legislature. He’s known her a long time and is a Republican. He says she’s honest and totally legit. The Talent ads try to paint her as otherwise and oh yeah, Democrats are soft on terrorism. That’s pretty much the gist of the independent pro-Talent ads running here one right after the other. The relief are ads Sebelius is running on the same stations for Gov. of KS. She is so the calm voice of reason. If Claire can come across to people the way Kathleen does, those ads may help her. BTW Kathleen and Dennis Moore are attending a fundraiser for Claire in KCMO, big bucks…I can’t afford it. It’s nice of them to help her raise money as the neighbors to the west. Obama came for her as well, although the article I read questioned him for supporting Claire and talking about an issue (energy I think) when he’d co-sponsored a bill with Talent on the subject. Now Talent’s group is all over it. Obama shouldn’t run for president in 08. This is the type of thing he’ll run into over and over with the old flip flop routine.”
Just FYI — when my snagged comment finally gets dragged out of moderation, it may make much less sense than when it was written.
The phrase “a few minutes ago” will no longer be applicable.
Just wanna point out that I’m not quite as nuts (or living in a time warp) as the delayed posting of an “awaiting moderation” comment will seem to indicate.
Not QUITE.

This is a really simple one for Rove. He’s going to wait until about a week before the elections, and then the Ethics Committee is going to find a couple of Dims in flagrante buggerecto. The message to the Base is as follows: we’ve had some problems, and we’re cleaning them up. But LOOK what you’ll get if you vote for the other guys. Now get the hell out there and vote your asses off before Satan breaks into your house and rapes your children.
Hillary is pissed because the Republicans are using Nancy Pelosi as a boogey man instead of her.

For me, the oddity of the week was the appearance of Attorney Stephen Jones representing a victim of Foley and Republican pedophile protectors.
Now many of you may remember Mr. Jones from the OKC bombing and his defense of convicted and executed Timothy McViegh. I also remember him from his defense of convicted and executed Roger Dale Stafford of the Sirloin Stockade murders, where Mr. Stafford lined up his victims in the walkin refrigerator and gunned them down.
Attorney Stephen Jones has always struck me as the potential love child of Maj. Emerson Winchester III and Major Frank Burns characters of M.A.S.H. fame. He has the pompous air of Winchester and the anvil-sharp wit of Burns, and a curious mix of both in appearance.
Nice to see him take a break from designated tackling dummy, to working point for a real live victim. Don’t expect cute or flashy from him, it is not his style. But cute and flashy doesn’t seem to work against a steady Eddy like Stephens either.
Speaking of snark, Cheney as Scarface is a must see. But if you are watching at work make sure that you’re using headphones instead of speakers. You won’t be hearing much Unitarian Jihad language here :)

Thanks for the response.
When pastiching Dan Brown, you have to say “renowned professor of ethics.”
Coz (if around) – I didn’t mean to be a snot and I know that’s how it came out.
I know that Mora and naval investigators have gone on the record, flat out, that abuses were taking place. I’m sure the FBI had people who may not have been thrilled and pulled back, but I don’t really see any flat out revelations and on the record castigations. And it’s a bit late now it seems.
Besides, they don’t have to worry about torture testimony much anymore, do they? Between Fitzgerald’s Salah case and Comey’s Padilla, as well as Arar and el-Masri – it’s a pretty clean set up now. You kidnap and ship for torture, that’s a state secret. You use the torture tesitmony for convictions – that’s case law now in those two settings.
I’m not tryiing to be obnoxious – I’m just very sad. No, I don’t see many good guys and the FBI refusing to make a very public reaction to the fact that we were kidnapping and abusing hundreds of innocent people at GITMO, but they did refuse to involve themselves in some of it, doesn’t really fill the “good guys” tank. It’s in that hold your breath, sitting right below empty, spot for me. Hopefully, you and a whole slew of other people have milesthatmayvary.
My mileage sux.
And yet ANOTHER former page comes forward. Approached five years ago.
Oilfieldguy – That’s the same Stephen Jones? When I first read the name I thought, “Steve Jones is a pretty common name. No way he’s the same guy as OKC Steve Jones.”
Strange.

Mary @ 62
Hey Mary,
I know you’re bummed out about the whole mess. Me too. I can’t remember where I read it but the FBI at Gitmo suggested to HQ at one point that a) They weren’t happy with the way the interogations were taking place (and weren’t involved) and b) Suggested to HQ that they (the FBI) should pull out of Gitmo because of it.
FBI to Gitmo: Hostile Interrogations Risky
Aggressive Interrogations Ineffective, Legally Risky, FBI Warned Military at Guantanamo
WASHINGTON Feb 24, 2006 (AP)— FBI agents repeatedly warned military interrogators at the U.S. prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, that their aggressive methods were legally risky and also likely to be ineffective, according to FBI memos made public Thursday.
A senior officer at the prison for terror suspects also “blatantly misled” his superiors at the Pentagon into thinking the FBI had endorsed the “aggressive and controversial interrogation plan” for one detainee, according to one of the 54 memos released by the American Civil Liberties Union.

we really should start spreacing this around in earnes joking fasion so the democrats pick up on it and it DOESN’t happen
bergs @ 48
Bergs – I beg to differ. Although it was great having Jane in CT following the campaign up close – and national blogs focusing on it – the campaign was fueled in large part by Connecticut grass roots.
Regarding lack of energy – please keep in mind that Campaign staff and volunteers have been working slowly and steadily on this campaign for well over six months. Lamont kept the same folks who worked on the primary – unlike Lieberman – so they’ve had very little rest for a long time. People are exhausted – not lacking in enthusiasm or committment. Quite frankly, much of campaigning is slog stuff.
Let’s get this in perspective. It was highly unusual that Ned was made a super star and got the press he got during the primary. Obviously it was because it is highly unusual to unseat an incombent Senator. Quite frankly, this is just another Senate campaign, fueled by enthusiastic volunteers. It can’t always be the flavor of the month.
I think to a degree this is a chance for Hillary to show she has a sense of humor. I think she should remind the press that once upon a time she warned of the Very Right Wing Cabal — and perhaps it is time for the press to again look to that source for some facts and answers!!! If she can say it with a straight face, and people get the joke, it could help her.
As I understand Speaker to be Nancy, she is one fantastic Italian Cook, and when she ran for Minority Leader, she campaigned by serving up major league Italian Dinners before the discussion of leadership began.
So I think it would be a wise move for her to move into a TV Kitchen, where a good many people can sit around a cooking island, and she ought to offer a lesson on one of her better dishes, all the while talking politics. Afterall, that’s where lots of people talk politics, and it is where youngsters get their first lessons. I am frankly so sick and tired of someone behind a podium, nearly hidden behand a bank of mikes, I think it is time for a “I am Nancy Pelosi, I do both food and politics, and believe one goes with the other.” It would end the effort to paint her with “fear paint.”
I don’t want to go off topic in the book salon, but MAN,I just had an EPIPHANE!;
