You have to see the above YouTube from CTBob to believe it. Joe Liarman says it's Ned Lamont who falsely accused him of using the words "partisan frenzy" when referring to Democrats who want to hold Dennis Hastert accountable — and then in the next clip…well, take a guess. Once again, "say anything" Lieberman proves he is, indeed, willing to "say anything."
He then goes on to parrot the new GOP defense of Hastert du jour — let's "wait until the investigation" in order to call for Hastert's resignation. Right-o. That would be the GOP controlled Ethics Committee that GOP Joe has so much faith in to get to the bottom of the GOP coverup for sexual predators within their ranks. Hmmm. Some folks not named Lieberman are rightfully skeptical that this particular Ethics Committe, gutted and retro-fitted by Hastert himself to look away from every single GOP scandal of the past two years, is qualified to do the job:
Now, can a panel that has been derided as a symbol of congressional dysfunction take up a tough, politically sensitive case a month before an election and produce results within weeks, as promised?
Skeptics abound.
"We don't have a lot of confidence in the ethics committee," said James Benton of the public watchdog group Common Cause.
The committee launched an investigation Thursday into the House GOP leadership's handling of a scandal involving sexually explicit communications that former Florida Rep. Mark Foley, a Republican, sent to teenage pages. It has prepared nearly four dozen subpoenas for records and testimony, and its leaders are promising to "go wherever the evidence takes us."
But the investigation follows months of attacks on the committee for failing to aggressively investigate the dealings of disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff and other scandals.
The committee's last major action – admonishing then-Majority Leader Tom DeLay, a Texas Republican – was about two years ago. Afterward, the Ethics Committee chairman was booted from the panel.
"The last time the committee did its job it had its head chopped off," Democracy 21 President Fred Wertheimer, a longtime champion of ethics reform, said yesterday, calling it "not exactly a good sign" for the job ahead. He has called for outside investigation.
While the DeLay case was considered politically sensitive, this one could be tougher. It involves looking into what House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert of Illinois and other lawmakers knew about Foley's activities, when, and how they responded.
The investigation also is being conducted in the heat of a partisan fight for control of Congress. Yesterday, New Jersey Republican Senate candidate Tom Kean called for Republican Hastert to resign as speaker. And Democrats plan to discuss the scandal in their radio address today.
So far most of Hastert's House GOP colleagues appear to be standing by him. Rep. Joe L. Barton of Texas sent a letter yesterday urging fellow Republicans to wait for the results of the investigations. "Then we can judge everyone's actions for ourselves, based on facts instead of frenzy or ambition," he wrote.
Watch the YouTube above to see how quickly Bush-kissin' GOP Joe picks up the GOP talking points — ready to assist in the official coverup for the GOP without limit. He'd have to improve significantly to be deserving of the word "scurrlious."
On the plus side — how cool is it that CTBob obviously now haunts No-Show Joe in his dreams?

CTBob – that video is EXCELLENT!
Hmm, Rep Joe Barton. That would be the Joe Barton of TX that Imus was ragging on the other day because he lied to Imus’s about supporting for passage the autism bill she so strongly advocates.
Politics makes strange bedfellows….
Thank you, CT Bob for helping Liarman to hang himself with his own words…again and again!

Second Source Tells ABC of Earlier Role by Hastert’s Office
ABC’s John Yang reports: A current House staffer has told ABC News that Scott Palmer, House Speaker Dennis Hastert’s (R-IL) chief of staff, met with disgraced former Rep. Mark Foley (R-FL) to discuss the time and attention he was giving House pages many months before the Speaker’s office has said it became aware of the issue.

CTBob –
Good on you! You’re a genuine hero to me.
And to all those out there who consider their politics merely an extension of their fundamentalist religious beliefs (not that too many of you are necessarily reading this), remember this:
Satan is the Father of Lies.
That should tell you everything you need to know.
I think it is way cool that Dems bought time on “Christian” radio stations. It’s about time!
Connecticut is a race between a Democrat and a Repug,AKA No Show Joe.
Look at national polling. No Show Joe is out of touch with America, and he is out of touch with Connecticut Democrats. I would think most of Joe’s Democratic support is loyalty, and these Dems have to be shown that No Show Joe is a Repug in everything but party title.
Ned has to confront Joe on whether he will pledge to not switch parties. I think Ned should spend big, immediately, to show Joe being out of touch with national, and more importantly, Connecticut consensus on where this country is headed under King George and No Show Joe. And in this ad, call out Joe on whether he will pledge to fill out his 6 year term as a Democrat. Ned should tell Joe that Democrats, who feel loyalty to Joe, will get that same loyalty back with a full term as a Democratic Senator(hopefully Joe will not be heard of again after 11/2) and not with some non answer to a very simple question,
Good job, Bob!
Next time he offers the “you’re with Ned” aside, tell him you’re with the Democratic party.
left in a right world @ 7
There is only one problem with that approach. I can see nothing preventing Lieberliar from simply lying about that. He can pledge all he wants to, and then still switch at a later date, coming up with some revelatory reason for his “conversion” which then supercedes his prior “naive” “commitment.”
Liars lie. It’s what they do most consistently, if not best.

I don’t understand how someone like this, who just doesn’t get it, and who is out every day saying things that clearly demonstrate that he doesn’t get it, can still be leading in every poll out there.
Had to quote this from SusanG’s post at the top of dailykos right now:
Sheesh. It’s as if Karl Rove woke up one morning last week and said: “Hey! You know what Foley money beneficiary Candidate X needs? Defensive play from Candidate Y, who’s implicated in the Abramoff emails! And oh, yeah … a visit from the Delusional Decider as well. That’ll confuse the hell out of the American people, trying to figure out who to be pissed off at the most. That’s a winner for the entire GOP ticket!”
This is compulsive, self-destructive herd behavior writ large, and it’s appearing more and more bizarre by the day (can’t wait for the Sunday talk shows).
Political theater doesn’t get any bloodier than this. Even Greek dramatists would be throwing up their hands at this point, disbelieving of the lethal combination of power, hubris, tragedy, lies and sheer stupidity of the main players.
I’ve spent some time on the Lieberman-Lamont polling sites mentioned in the previous post. It IS looking good for Ned, but I’m surprised he isn’t closing faster. Over 50% of the house races have closed for Dems at least that fast during the same time span.
Great video, CTBob. How many undecided or uncertain voters do you suppose see videos like this?
Next time he offers the “you’re with Ned” aside, tell him you’re with the Democratic party.
Great line.

OT, for a laugh. Politics1.com has a headline:
FOLEYTIO PAGE SCANDAL
Hey, CTBob!
They’ve got your video and fdl up at the top at atrios!
I’ve written up more from last night’s forum. There were four speakers. I really appreciated hearing Eric Williams, who spoke first, and was one of the main people behind the IRS complaint that was filed against two major churches that were practically endorsing Ken Blackwell. I’m hoping to write up some of what he said next.
There were also two other speakers, both Evangelicals. Everyone was supposed to give a 10 minutes opening statement. Lankford’s statement was almost 20 minutes, so it’s taking a long time to get through it. But I do think it’s important to try to understand the motivation here. I’ve done a diary at Kos which includes what I posted last night, along with a bit that I haven’t posted here yet. In this post, though, I’m just including what he said is the role of civil government. Obviously, my view of “what the civil government’s job is” is quite different from his.

Good question earlier in Blue America, ET…Shame you didn’t get an answer.
AN OPEN LETTER TO NED LAMONT
Dear Ned,
First of all, thank you for stepping forward back in January to take on Joe Lieberman. I can’t tell you how furious I had become at Holy Joe and felt as if there was not going to be any option to him this November. It was depressing…almost as depressing as it was when Bush was elected in 2004.
I went to my first political town meeting in March just to meet you and came away impressed enough to jump on your primary bandwagon with money, time and recommendations to friends and family. And my husband and I hung in on primary evening – with a good bottle of wine – and watched with baited breath as you beat the pants off Bush’s CT sock puppet. (Had a little headache the next morning, but it was worth it!)
Now, a favor please!
GET OUT THERE AND KICK ASS! I mean, what have you got to lose?
I know that you’re working on broadening your appeal to independents. I know that you have to make sure people know that you’re smart, experienced in ways that will translate to the Senate, and willing to take our issues to Washington.
But DON’T STOP FIGHTING when it comes to Holy Joe’s abysmal record in Washington.
I read the NYTimes this morning and gagged at the MSM’s description of your primary campaign as negative…seems that if you use an opponent’s record then you’re negative, even if you’re simply telling the truth. What do they expect you to do…lie and say that Joe has done a terrific job in DC?
BUT DON’T STOP CALLING LIEBERMAN OUT ON HIS RECORD. HAMMER IT HOME. KEEP IT SIMPLE. AND TELL IT LIKE IT IS.
WE NEED TO SEE YOU OUT THERE, STRONG, VOCAL, AND VISABLE. (Where’s the Kiss Float been since the primary?)
What have you got to lose? Not a damn thing. But your supporters have a lot to lose.
PLEASE!!
THANK YOU!

This is the $64,000 question. What is Ned doing, and what can we do, to make sure the voters of CT understand what a liar and quisling Joe is? We need some hard hitting ads, for a start. Hillsman, where are you?

If Joe is using republican help, it would follow that behind the scenes massive direct mail campaign is hitting houses containing false info about Ned and that is holding the numbers down for him. SOMETHING is going on that is not on the public airwaves.

All I have to say is WTF is wrong with the good people of CT, that are giving this DINO a lead over Lamont? Albeit a small lead, but still? After what he did, and more importantly, did not do in 2000 and ever since then? WTF? Can someone from Conneticut please explain this to me?
Sincerely,

“I never saw a single e-mail,” Reynolds says in the ad. “Not one.”
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/200…..y_ny_gop_3
That’s the same BS Hastert is pulling. He never saw them…
Re frame the question so you can deny it. Um, so he heard about them and their contents instead
I’ve posted an explanation for my confrontive questioning of Admiral Sestak at the end of the Joe Sestak thread – #97.
Remember the dynamic here in CT. The cost of living is outrageous and the housing market is going in the dumper fast — leaving lots of people with interest-only mortgages owing far more than the house is currently worth. The middle class people Joe has been so worried about in the last 24 hours are scrambling to get through the day, without the time to sit down with coffee and newspaper and actually learn the issues that we know by heart. It’s just the way it is.
People here know Joe as a Democrat. Period. When polled, it all depends on how the questions are asked and how carefully the people listen — they may be solidly behind the D, but won’t realize until they are in the booth voting for a D for Congress or Governor that Joe is not the D candidate. It’s not from stupidity — it’s from being totally overstretched — these folks should be spending more time with their kids and sleeping, not reading newspapers.
Again, THAT is why phone banking and canvassing is so critical — people need the personal contact from people who are knowledgeable about both candidates and can educate the people who are now willing to listen. And, the fact that Joe is on the SEVENTH row of the ballot —
Internal polling had Joe winning Aug 8, too.
There is one way to try to get Joe Lieberman to stop lying. Ask him, until he gives a clear answer, if he will promise to not support the Republicans for Senate leadership for the entire six years of the term. Ask him to promise that he will not vacate the seat if a Republican is likely to be named to replace him.
Joe Lieberman has betrayed the Democratic Party over and over again so he needs to make a binding promise not to perform the ultimate betrayal, which he seems to have been headed for since the mid 90s. Make him go on record in no uncertain terms. If he won’t you know that he planned to jump to the Republicans all along.
Hard to believe in the Ethics Committee investigation when at least two of its members have accepted campaign funds from Dennis Hastert. One of them, Judy Biggert, from my own IL-14, has taken $7,000 from him. We are supposed to expect the Committee to bite the hand that feeds it?
Steve in CO @ 31
As a nutmegger I’d love to explain it to you, but I can’t. I think the experience ads combined with saving jobs at the Groton sub base may have something to do with it. They know Joe. They’re just learning about Ned.
Good for CTBob for dogging Lieberman and making these wonderful videos.
Lieberman is plastering the local networks with ads…plastering. I haven’t received any mail material from Lieberman since before the primary, but I received some from Lamont. So they haven’t hit the mailers much yet.
Look for something interesting in the newspapers tomorrow, not sure what papers are being targeted, but I think it’ll be quite good.
Steve in CO @ 31
Lieberman is all over EVERYTHING – tv/radio ads, call ins, appearances, local NPR, etc. Several direct mail pieces a week.
Lamont, unfortunately, isnt getting the media attention, and isnt buying the time. I’m hoping there is a plan. It’s been one giant lull ever since the primary win.
I wish I had the money to finance and negative ad campaign on tv against Lieberman. His track record is indefensible, yet he is not being forced to defend it.
I wish I had the money to push the Repug in the race too, because every vote he picks up is a vote for Lieb.
Personally, I don’t know one person voting for Lieberman. Every independent, dem, and republican I have spoken to in CT is voting for Ned. I don’t understand the polling at all, but it is what it is…
We’re up against EVERYTHING – the status quo, the lobbyists, the pugs, the dem establishment, the AIPAC money, you name it.
Sha – I just posted your open letter on the Lamont blog. There are lots of other comments just like yours.
His campaign seems wedded to primarily using a grassroots effort. They don’t think political ads work or are meaningful.
In this instance I disagreee. They should be blanketing the airwaves with Ned’s bio, Ned’s positions, spell out Lieberman’s record. I think it’s a real mistake not to do so.
On the positive side – the momentum is building. Lamont got some great endorsements this week (which I hope he uses in ads) and there are lots of volunteers phoning and canvassing. Ned showed up in both Norwalk and Danbury to kick off the canvassing today. I went door to door and the response to Ned is quite good.
Many people in CT still do not really know Ned – so we really do need lots of ads on TV and radio from now until November 7th that spell things out. Although I think his current ads are clever – they’re not appropriate in terms of educating uninformed voters.
Howdy, folks.
Oh man, the students at Southern CT College slammed Lieberman. He was visiting and campaigning there yesterday. I just saw an article in my actual paper version of the Courant. The lead in question by a student was this:
WOOHOO! This is next to on the same page the story of Wesley Clarke’s visit to UConn with Lamont.
I’ll see if I can find this on the net version of the paper.
Kirby – your interview of Brig General John H. Johns was incredibly good. Katie Couric should take notes.
You and Bob are doing a fantastic job. And the site is becoming very well known. How do you guys do it? You’ve got day jobs and other demands on your schedules.

I just moved to New Hampshire from Oregon. Unfortunately, too late to re-register to vote. Do you know of any volunteer opportunities in CT?
By the way – Lieberman has gotten millions of dollars from lobbyists and Republicans SINCE the primary. That’s why his ads blanket the state.
Lamont will be lucky to have gotten half of that from fundraising, grassroots – and his own pocket. I don’t think the national party has helped much if at all. Ned is being outspent at least 2 to 1.
A lot will be revealed when the FEC reports come out.
Got it. Here’s the one on Lieberman.
Here’s the article on Lamont and Clarke.
anjinsan – are you sure about that? I think voter registration is open until October 24th
Anyway – if you’re looking for volunteer opportunities, I would recommend the Lamont web site: http://www.nedlamont dot com
Thank you Sharon and Urban Pirate… perhaps the polling is done with people who still have land lines? I dunno… and yes, I’ve gathered that Lieberman is spending millions on ads… does anyone know what the strategy is in the Lamont camp? A last minute push? And your right, a few negative ads about Lieberman’s record would be nice…
Off to a party where our local Matanuska-Susitna Borough Mayor, Assembly and School Board victors – progressives and rational moderates, one and all – will celebrate last Tuesday’s sweeping victory.
We were heavily outspent, dissed by the evangelical machine, cut down in the local media and flipped off by people who tore down our signs. But we won big. It was the first progressive sweep any of us can remember since…….? Never happened before. And all this on Diebold machines – though the touchscreen machines were noticably absent thanks to a lawsuit by our Democratic Party.
Is the ethics committee “republican controlled”? I understood it to be split 50/50 between the parties?
I was just at the campaign website. October 23rd looks like it’s going to be a very eventful day. A three-way debate between Lamont, Lieberman, and Schlesinger. Schlesinger? Wow, he’s still around.
Steve in CO @ 49
Answers in order to questions: Land lines most likely. A little tiny bit. Yes. And I agree.
The way Lieberman is campaigning he’s already asserting that Lamont is running a negative campaign even though Lamont’s ads have been very, very decent. Lieberman’s constantly whinning about how mean Lamont is. Frankly, I think he ought to knock Joe’s block off with some ads now and GIVE him something to cry about, but that’s just me. In that area, I don’t know how the campaign views the idea.

Yeah. It’s how you can really tell Joe’s a Repug. How can you tell when they lie??? Their lips move….
@42 — thanks! I have never had the pleasure of working with such great folks before! I live in the middle of the state, Spazeboy is North, CTBob is south, and CTBlogger is West. Spaze and I have the most flexibility in our schedules and even though I blog at CTBob, there’s no problem with me pitching in with Spaze when Bob is unavailable. Yesterday, for example, Spaze and I covered the event with Clark, and Joe was in Bob’s town, so he was able to sneak away and get that amazing footage.
We share the load, share leads and ideas, revel in each others’ scoops and support one another through work, family obligations and sleep (when needed). It is just a joy. In the case, the outcome is so much more than just the sum of the parts.
And, hate me if you must, but CTBob hit the home run yesterday — if you can show him some PayPal love to say thanks — it will all go to him, I don’t want a penny.

A couple things to consider:
1) Lamont has a very sophisticated ground game; Lieberman has none. Most agree that if Lamont is withing 5 pts on election day he will win.
2) Recent polling reflects that Lieberman is spending like a drunken sailor on ads right now thanks to his Republican, war hawk and lobbyist friends. That advantage will disappear quickly as Lamont steps up to meet him.
3) The debates are coming up. I can’t and won’t predict who will win them, but they will no doubt have a huge impact on the race.
4) The GOP is in a tailspin and Lieberman has hitched his wagon to them. It will be much harder for him to distance himself from Bush et. al. in the debates and still keep the new GOP voters he needs so desperately.
5) Ned has a great team of wonderful, committed people. Tortureman has Dan Gerstein. ‘Nuf said.
I believe in Lamont, his supporters and the campaign. And four weeks is an awfully long way away.

Absolutely! It was this video that made me FINALLY go to his site to leave a “thank you” comment. (And, of course, bookmark the site.) I sincerely hope that when all this is over and Ned is in the Senate CT Bob moves on to a MUCH larger venue… Although some of the posts on his site tell me he’s just about there already. Amazing work, for sure.
Perhaps your right Sharon. But seriously, when are the ‘polite left,’ going to realize that factual negative ads work? Take the gloves off for pete’s sake. Joe has provided ample, ample foder for lots of them. Where’s the 501’s on the left? Here in Colorado they are rampant, and are slandering and sliming any and all democrats.

My best guess is it’s name recognition only. Any informed Democrat knows better by now, and the morons (sorry, I’m a bit cranky) who only think about elections when they realize that the bars might close (at least they do here…) run on “Hey, duh, I think I saw that name before… I guess I’ll vote for him…” Tragic, but I’ve learned here in Savannah that you can never use “The TH word” when talking about a large group of people. (The “TH word,” by the way, is “THINK.” It’s just not done all that much…)
I’ve put together a Kos diary that I want to serve as a one-stop resource for PredatorGate Myths and Facts. Stop by and feel free to add to it (or maybe Jane or Redd or someone could start a similar page here).
Sorry for my outburst at #63. Everyone is working their tails (even TREx) off and who am I in my comfy chair to say a single word. I had been begging the Wetterling campaign to take the gloves off because the NRSC is slamming her in T.V. ads. And she has come out fighting recently. Current events have the wind at her back.
Again, thanks for all that everyone has done. And Ned is courageous for taking his proud stand.
Want to reiterate a point that others have discussed above regarding what in the world is wrong with CT voters.
Right now, there are a number of Dem voters who think Joe is the candidate of the Dem party. It makes a HUGE difference when – during either phone calls or door canvassing, when we explain Joe lost the primary, Ned is the official Dem candidate for Senate – and that Joe’s campaign is being funded by Republicans and lobbyists.
Believe me, those facts, presented nicely, have had a big impact.

Welcome, and I love your name! One of my favorite books…
Kirby @ 35
Most people are apolitical, we tend to forget this because most of us here are decidedly not. Sure, you can pin anyone down on an issue, maybe get them to declare for a party, but they do not live and breathe politics. We can’t make them pay attention, we can only hope that the last thing they heard on the way to the polls is a message from our candidate.
This doesn’t mean we can’t do anything, we have to be sure that our message is out there, talking to your friends and neighbors, giving money to the campaign, phone banking, etc & etc. We have to get our folks to the polls on election day.
Negative ads work, and Ned needs to bite the bullet and use them. 47th in return on tax dollars is nothing to brag about, not to mention torture and gutting the bill of rights. If Ned won’t, we need to call for outside groups to do so. Move On comes to mind, the national party could help, but the triangulating bastards likely won’t.
High profile endorsements are good, send those letters to Hillary and Bill, shame Dodd into coming through.
Jane Hamsher @ 56
I agree with everything you said, Jane. I also wondered wrt that last poll if Lieberman wasn’t merely being lifted by the same small wave from 9/11 and Bush stumping that produced Bush’s exceedingly modest bump in the polls. If so, the numbers are in a complete downward spiral now.
On a brighter side, having said some rude things about unthinking voters earlier, it’s my understanding that in order to vote for Joe you’ll have to go down to “door #5.” It is to be hoped that the uninformed Dem voter will simply look for the “D” and pull the lever…, no, wait… mark the box with the pen…. no, wait, punch the chad…. no, wait… well, do his or her best to vote for the REAL Democrat.
ember @ 64
I thought that absolutely hilarious. I literally pictured a crowd of people with pitchforks in hand trying to railroad the villan out of town.
From the Lamont blog…
“I promise everybody there will be no more soft ads from Lamont. Lieberman won’t be able to plug the whole negativity bullshit argument anymore to the media. In the real world pointing out that you suck at your job gets you fired. According to Joe Lieberman it means time to play the blame game. Well I hope everybody makes sure we end it on November, 7th.”

Thank you. I have another favorite book, but I didn’t think “half-cocked jack” would be appropriate for this site.
As for people voting D or door #5.. I think we should give voters more credit. The best way I saw it put recently was that recent scandals are disgusting conservative voters, making them less inclined to vote, while also energizing liberal voters. It’s my hope that thus energized, democratic voters would pay attention to who they’re voting for and what they stand for.

CTbob, excellent job on this and maximum score on the interview with General Johns. Keep it up, and Ned will win. The key now is to get the Republican votes icked out about Lieberman. Icked out enough to stay home. So a campaign about how liberal Lieberman is and how he is in Israel’s pocket might peel away a lot of winger votes.

That’s code for “we’re planning to run out the clock by interviewing the janitors who might have gone through certain wastebaskets in 2005.” Joe, I hope you don’t mind if I fail to take comfort in your assessment of when the investigation will be “over.”
I just want to say:
Thanks, Conn. Bob!

OT: This fucking Mets game is killing me.
James! Such a good guy. He knows what he is talking about. The ethic comm. has no teeth, as it was intended. Not that the previous version was that much better w/Hefley, but it is even worse now,

Again, a false premise and no amount of swear to die, etc is going to work. Nothing, I repeat, nothing a liar says, can be worth the oxygen consumed in uttering it. I don’t care if Joe swore on a stack of copies of the Old Testament–we all know him, so this line of argument makes no sense. He’d sell out Hadassa, if the price were right.
He’d have to improve significantly to be deserving of the word “scurrlious.”
Or “scurrilous,” even.
Awwwww Hahaha, Bob! You rock!
Ned Lamont is the bravest, gentlest, warmest, most wonderful person ever to become Senator for Connecticut!
Can anyone know how to get Clinton Gore or Babama to go stand beside Lamont? Sure people open thier eyes .That will be two votes for REPS LIBERMANS AND CHENEYS. hE HAS TOLD THEM HE WONT STAND WITH THEM WHEN HE DIDN`T ACCEPT DEFEAT.
Jane Hamsher is the bravest, gentlest, warmest, most wonderful human being I have ever met in my life!
Turncoat Joe is slime. Anyway, it is all about him, his ego – otherwise he wouldn’t have called his new party “Connecticut for Joe”, he would have called it “Joe for Connecticut” if he really was what he likes to pretend to be.
