Wes Clark campaigned with Ned Lamont today, slamming Joe Lieberman for his hopeless bungling of the war in Iraq that has left America less safe as a result. Meanwhile, Connecticut House Majority Leader Chris Donovan also castigated Lieberman for refusing to call on Dennis Hastert to step down, saying:
Ned Lamont, correctly, has called for Speaker Hastert to step down. You, instead, have criticized those who want accountability from those entrusted with great authority.
Clark and Lamont also addressed the issue of the DC insiders Lieberman is so loyal to who have no problem putting kids at risk:
QUESTION: This issue of Dennis Hastert? Everybody is talking about that. The nurses that I work with — bingo. You don't have to explain it, you don't have to get in an involved argument, because they see this Congress as putting kids at risk.
LAMONT: My sense is we have people in Congress who haven't been parents for an awful long time. If any of you've got kids and you've got somebody in seventh grade and you found out that there was a teacher who was sending potentially inappropriate emails to somebody's fellow student, and that principle hadn't reacted, my God you'd go ballistic. You wouldn't be wondering about what the reaction of the other parents was going to be. And as far as I can figure out, the people in Washington are wondering what the political response was going to be and they didn't worry about the kids.
QUESTION: No, and that's what people can identify with.
CLARK: Why don't you just say, in case of Hastert — it's kids at risk. In case of Republians — it's America at risk.
Lieberman's refusal to hold Dennis Hastert accountable for his actions is even more deplorable when you listen to him undercut Democratic leaders like Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi who are trying to do so.
He is a vile and soulless human being.

Heart of stone and broken moral compass.
Thank you, Ned Lamont, for putting the issue right into perspective. And thank you, Wes Clark, for sticking it to Hastert and to the party.
Quick and to the point, get ‘em Ned.
Looks like Ned is gearing up for the home stretch … great stuff with Clark.
Maybe I’m just overindoctrinated, but I just can’t figure out what would make ANYONE vote for Lieberman, let alone a Democrat.

Loopholes mean fence may never be built, at least not as advertised
The office of Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Tex.) yesterday released a letter from House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) promising to ensure that Chertoff has discretion over whether to build a fence or choose other options. Homeland Security officials must also consult with U.S., state and local representatives on where structures are placed.

Ditto. For the life of me, I cannot understand the Dems in Conn. On a more positive note here in New Mexico, I read today that Heather Wilson (R) was on the Page Committee (or whatever it is called). She is already lagging behind Patricia Madrid. I would think this Foley thing is going to do her in. Oh Happy Day. I don’t live in her district, but nonetheless, she is another one that needs to go.
Joe = stale socks. time for a change.

I agree with you. Particularly with the way he gave Hastert a free pass yesterday in his comments. I hope the people who don’t pay attention until it gets close to vote have started to pay attention.

I think it will end up as a series of golf courses with links fees that only Republicans can afford.
EPU’d (Thanks, Rayne, for calling down to the basement!)
When Hastert said he “takes responsibility,” what exactly did he take responsibility for?
Read his statement, and he actually takes no responsibility for anything. Foley is responsible for sending the emails, of course. The Dems and George Soros are responsible for leaking them. He’s asked about his staff’s role, but answers with doublespeak – which says in essence, “I’m not responsible for my staff.”
Hastert’s statement accepting responsibility seems to be little more than a sentence that says “my name is at the top of the House table of organization.” Everyone else is to blame for this mess, it seems, but not Dear Denny.
whoo, hear that?
*crickets*
Where is everyone?
Cozumel #13 –
Wait. The shoe hasn’t dropped yet.
Check out the FULL text of The Real ID Act, passed last year March, and you’ll see what I mean.
There will not be much more discussion about this fence if the Dems don’t take back a majority.
Were I a Republican, I’d start buying stock in whatever companies are starting to write up proposals.
Blecchhhh…
I have to think Lieberman has handed Lamont a huge gift here. This play so perfectly into the “out of touch, too long in Washington” theme.

It doesn’t really distinguish between the gas and oil markets and they are different. The part that I found interesting and which was also cited in a recent NYT story is the possible role of current Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr. He came from Goldman Sachs and
It’s not that Goldman could go against the market but it could tip it since gasoline was near its historic high and seasonal declines were only a month or so away. In such a situation, it is possible to affect the timing of a change and also influence its rate. In fact, gas prices began their still ongoing decline just 3 days later on August 12.

The Democrats need to point out that this is not an isolated incident that can be resolved with a few resignations and tearful apologies. This is the way the Republicans handle *everything*. It’s emblematic of the last six years, packaged (as I keep saying), in Jerry Springer terms.
I would also like to see them use the phrase “moral rot”.

C-SPAN had the program today of former President Clinton campaigning Thursday for Joe Sestak. Clinton, as usual, made some great points. The main one–vote Democratic if you want to vote for someone in the reality-based community and not for the ideologues who brought you the huge deficit, the Iraq war, tax breaks for the wealthy, cuts in college loans, etc. The reality-based will listen to reason; the ideologues already have the answer so discussion is not an option.

If you want to know why someone as duplicitous as Lieberman continues to have support, check out the story in the NYT (Jennifer Medina reporting) in which Lieberman claimed, falsely, that Lamont doesn’t support Israel.
Lieberman queries Lamont over commitment to Israel
As I wrote for an earlier post:
So Joe got a two-fer — Lamont has scary black friends, and no matter what Lamont himself says, those scary black friends don’t support Israel. In the story, it seems Joe’s “proof” that Maxine Waters doesn’t support Israel is that she joined with about a dozen other Dems to abstain on a House resolution expressing support for Israel recently, but the resolution also contained language praising the Bush policy in the region. Maxine abstained for that reason. But the kicker is, Lamont had already announced that notwithstanding the BS about Bush, he would have supported the resolution at the time. At least Medina got that part right.
So Lieberman was being completely dishonest in claiming Lamont didn’t support Israel, but the whole point of the remark was to play the race card, again. He did the same thing before the primary, and Jane wrote on that at the time.
rwcole @ 38
I would suppose that would depend on whether you took into account the effects of their interventions in the gasoline market.

I don’t understand?
Hi guys –
Just wanna drop in and say hello to all my dear Firepups before I go do my “aqua-therapy” in the pool.
I can scarcely keep up with all the news as it goes down (”may you live in interesting times,” a curse, indeed), let alone have time left over to post. And then I was up so late last night trying to find out about the Apex NC chemical fire — my cousin lives right on the outskirts. Thank goodness no one was seriously injured, just some briefly treated for inhalation problems, then released. My cuz is OK and so are her kids and husband. (Hope they nail the corporation responsible!)
But I know y’all are on top of everything as rapidly as things occur! And it gives my heart a warm glow to know this FDL community is thriving right now. You all are the best!
One of the prayers that Mr. K8 and I utter every single night goes like this, “Please, Lord, help to unmask people of power to reveal exactly who they are. Please help trip up the evil and the corrupt in their very own evil and corruption. Please help to catch them in the very snares they set for others.”
I’m feeling like this prayer is being answered many, many times over in recent days.
We also pray for strength and energy and courage for all those who love justice and truth — and all you Firepups figure prominently in that category.
So I just wanted to thank everyone here around the Lake — hosts, posting guests, all the commenters — for your example, for your inspiration. You all help keep me motivated and focused and eager to keep on fighting, not just for this election, but for the rest of my life. Justice is a battle for the long haul, and this website is one of the best places anywhere to find renewal, refreshment of spirit, recharging of batteries, mutual support.
Long live FDL!
Oh, and lest I forget:

Hi, OFG:
Believe it or not, I have fond childhood memories of Centerville, TX!
The interstate wasn’t there, of course, but it was half-way between our town and my grandmother’s town, so that’s where we would meet when one of us kids was going for a visit.
There was a big old hotel there, that is draped in numinous memories for me (It had a little pond with a frog sculpture for decoration), which is where we would meet.
When we were driving all the way, we would stop at the cafe there just off the square, for my father to have two cups of coffee. He was all about keeping to the schedule (gotta make time) so we had to explore the little town really fast.
Thanks for reminding me of Centerville. :)

Oh dear. I didn’t know. I’m a fan since the 60s.
Washington Week is such a waste. My favorite quote was from the Establishment nincompoop John Harris when he said that Ned Lamont had run a typical Rovian campaign (because he had appealed to his base) Apparently, Harris doesn’t realize that in a primary that’s who you are supposed to appeal to, you know, your own party, unlike Joe.
A close runnerup came from Linda Robinson who said that with Warner’s negative take on Iraq there was likely to be a new plan proposed for Iraq after the election. I guess it’s so important that it can wait a month and another 30-40 American dead. Dutifully, Robinson opined in Bush speak talking points that they will propose something between stay the course and cut and run, conveniently forgetting that nobody has proposed cut and run, not Murtha, not Kerry. In fact, Murtha’s plan does stand between Bush’s mindless stay the course and the fictitious cut and run.
I have a suggestion for a new TV show. How about getting a group of experienced reporters together and have them talk intelligently about the week’s top stories? I know it hasn’t been tried but it might be interesting.
What great point did Hugh make? Im lost
Thanks for the help with the pop quiz, gang.
Must just be me, I guess; I figured if more people saw the same connection it might be legit.
I thought I saw a connection between these states; each of them were “targets” of a PAC called “Special Teams 2004″.
And all of them have Native American tribes, as well as folks that might have been on the take from Abramoff.
I think. I’m still doing the legwork. Tripped on this PAC while digging for connections between Foley and Hastert on money.
Seems really, really weird that neither Foley nor Hastert got money from the 20 PAC’s I just ran through FEC. Like everybody else did, but not these two. I’m going bonkers from looking, too, going to have to give it up.
HotFlash @ 132
Thanks, right back atcha…
Bill — it wasn’t a direct point, but it was there in his daily run-down of gasoline prices.
The states I mentioned also trend towards lower than average gas prices.
Hmm.
Hugh — actually, as you probably recall, there used to be such a program, called Washington Week in Review. Paul Duke, Peter Lisagore and others who were really interesting. They’re all gone. Last night on PBS, there was an excellent series on war reporters, including Ernie Pyle and others from WWII, and how their jobs have changed with the nature of war and the dishonesty of the governments waging it.
Bill @ 141
Me too. I mean it’s so unlikely.
whoops, Bill– I mistakenly credited Hugh for kirk murphy’s 125.
smart men, both.
good points are made by both of them, all the time.

Oklahoma kiddo — then it wasn’t just me.

And I thought it was something like: the states that are dead last in education spending. (Washington is pathetic, on that account.)
Okay, off to Bartell’s!

Thought I was on to something for a minute.
heh.
What was it Foley wanted that page to do? Get a Buzz and Neal?
Jane Hamsher @ 74
Jane, speaking of FDL merchandise… have you given any more thought to the FDL business card idea? I really think it could be a great way for FDL readers to spread the word about FDL to their friends, family, and acquaintances.
People love to get business cards, and they really carry a great deal of weight – adding an aura of legitimacy and authority, a sense that FDL has really “arrived” in the flesh and blood world outside the internet (which, of course, happened long long ago, but it is the perception that matters).
It is one thing to mention FDL to a friend, and another entirely to give them a business card so they can ponder it and remember to look it up later.

Re moderation: my computer is infested with ad software which has taken over almost every function. And yet my comments (simple as they may be) almost never are moderated. I have been advised my machine needs to be totally emptied (wiped???) and I could start all over again. Options: Take it to my son-in-law (works in computer security) and wait a month or so, pay $100 to a computer fix-it shop, or do it myself.
Ummm, so I do nothing. I am not emailing anyone or receiving anything because I am afraid of what it will do. I only read and post here once in a while.
Re situation with oldest son who lost his wife in Feb., he is now hospitalized. Long sad trubulent story. His children are with his wife’s family. Too much pain. One day at a time…

I am. There isn’t, but it’s still genius.
op99 — you were very, very close.
Cantwell did get money through the Abramoff scams, money from two tribes — Agua Caliente and Saginaw Chippewa, which to the best of my knowledge are not natural constituencies for her (not in her state – correct me if I’m wrong).
Swap out David Duke for Tauzin, Thurmond for Taylor and Hayes.

Ok, who could really keep up with punaise!?

This has saved my computer a few times, I think:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/xscan.php
It is just a free spyware/adware scan you can run, no muss, no fuss.
Then there’s Ad-aware, a free download. Very good. It finds the ad goblins and quarantines them and deletes them. I hope this helps.
I have always thought that one of the great unsung villains of our times is Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. He has been one of the foremost opponents of campaign finance reform of any kind. IIRC he was involved in the case that had the Supreme Court declare that money equals free speech ensuring that our political system was and would remain up for sale.
Larry King has 5 ex pages on; all gung ho; they claim they heard rumors Foley was gay but say they were never warned about possible predator behavior. That will be the news. Pages weren’t warned. One of the guys talks like he just got out of Jesus camp, with Melhman talking points.

I typed in Special Teams 2004 Political Action Committee and got two hits back, one from Outback Steakhouse’s list of political contributions in 2004, listed at opensecrets.org. But opensecrets.org doesn’t list Special Teams 2004 as a PAC……? What is the Alaska link?- I can’t find it.
Rayne @ 170
For me the count on S.3930 (torture) was most telling. The country needs at a minimum seventeen new Senators and forty six Representatives to keep that kind of vote in check.

Seconded on Ad-Aware.
Also, if you use Mozilla Firefox as your web browser, I would recommend using the NoScript plugin…Everywhere but in domains that you trust (such as FDL).

Neal and Bob.
GrandmaJ — very sorry about your family situation, wish there was something we could do for you. We’ll have to continue to pray/send healing thoughts to you and yours.
In regards to your computer, assuming you have a PC running Windows: you need to spend the $100 and have it cleaned, or spend $20-$50 on getting a memory stick/flash memory media, then go to the library (if they have high speed internet).
Download these things (you can find them on CNET.com):
– ZoneAlarm firewall (free version)
– Spybot (anti-spyware/anti-malware, free)
– AdAware (anti-spyware/anti-malware, free)
– AVG from Grisoft (open source anti-virus – free)
Download to stick memory, copy to your computer from stick memory, install, then run each package.
If you are already using a firewall, you may have a problem with it since it’s not doing what you need it to do. Probably ought to consider removing and replacing it (never surf without one, though).
You will need both of the anti-spyware packages because no one package picks up all spyware. Just run them alternatingly.
AVG is a nice, non-invasive anti-virus; I suspect whatever you currently have isn’t working properly, should replace it.
I suggest an alternative browser, too, to see if that also helps with blocking the problem stuff.
You might be able to pay a teenager you trust to handle all of this for $25 bucks. I know my 12-year-old could handle it, from downloading to install to running the software to clean out the bugs. You may still need to have a tech do more work on your machine, can’t guarantee this won’t be necessary — but you would have the tools you need to keep your machine clean and running smoothly.
And then you’ll be back up and running at top speed with the rest of the FirePups. Best of luck to you.

No argument here.
Rayne — VA, CT, and FL also lay claim to Native Americans (when it suits)… actually lots of states do. Could it be so sophisticated a rip-off that much is stolen via other states who have a bit more scrutiny constantly cast upon them?
(tinfoil optional at this point.)

So many facets to that one.
angie — yeah, I caught the Moyers’ program. But I already knew it was going to take us as long to get out of this mess as it did to get in it.
We need to pledge to ourselves that at some point we must launch a viable third party that will keep the other two in check; the Republicans have proven that a majority party cannot ever represent the best interests of a nation in a two-party system. Theoretically it should, but it’s far too easy to game.
Shorter analysis: Absolute power corrupts absolutely – proven.
Ed*ard Teller — go to the FEC site here:

Go to the link for Committee Search, type in Special Teams. You’ll see two of them, one for 2004 and one for 2006. Evidently the goals for 2006 have changed a LOT.
Eureka Springs — yes, the Tortue vote was most emblematic of the nature of the threat we face, made the point crystal clear. But the threat has been creeping up on us for some time, and we’ve been asleep (like The Real ID Act — very bad bit of legislation and not enough Dems got angry about it).

TeddySanFran: As you know, a California appeals court upheld the State’s ban on gay marriage. A 2-1 decision. The dissent was Justice Anthony Kline who many years ago founded a liberal public interest law firm, Public Advocates, with Sidney Wolinski and was later legal affairs secretary for Gov. Jerry Brown. Together they overturned discriminatory funding for schools and improved prisoner treatment in California prisons. Tony should have gone on to the California Supreme Court, but Reagan et al ended that. Back about 1975 or so, while a law student, I worked as an intern to Tony Kline on prisoner rights issues — very similar to Gitmo issues today — and he won a big case to get due process in parole hearings. They were good people, great lawyers.

Haines Johnson, was another. And there was someone else wonderful whose name I can’t remember, who wrote a great book on Russia and then did a documentary for PBS about same.
Ken Bode (pronounced Bo-dee) was a fantastic moderator on Wash Week. He got booted off for being too smart, too truthful, and asking too many important questions.
Hence, we ended up with Gwen Ifill.

How sad is it that everyone wants Hastert’s head on a platter, but Condi “I have no recollection of that mega-important briefing wherein I could have maybe tried to stop 9-11 before it happened” Rice gets to skate? Why doesn’t anyone seem to care about why that little tidbit didn’t make it into the 9-11 commission report? I think the GOP has done a superlative job of taking everyone’s eye off the ball that actually matters.

Point and match! (collapsing into giggles)
Lieberman has been throwing everything but the kitchen sink at Lamont. And then he gets journalists like that idiot on Washingon Week to say that Lamont is running a nasty campaign.
Unfortunately, people who don’t know Ned, but are familiar with Lieberman, believe Joey.

We keep this up and the mod’ll put the cabouchon it.
Hastert’s so radioactive right now that a growing number of Congresscritters are suddenly cancelling fundraisers where he was supposed to be the lead draw.
And Denny’s odd belief that he could get out from under the cover-up charge by blaming everything on Bill Clinton and George Soros isn’t working either, even with other Republicans:
dag garnet, have y’all gone loco?
Yes, that is me asking the “Hastert question” of Ned and Wes Clark. Average people, like the nurses I work with, just don’t have the time or inclination to learn about the Geneva Conventions or habeus issues. But when they hear in passing while they are doing 4 things and the news is on, that kids are at risk — they stop and listen. Yes, the war is critical, but for the average “soccer mom” here, I think this story has legs.
More grist for the war mill from last night when Spazeboy and I interviewed Brigadier General John H. Johns. Talk about a man from West Point who us just so mad — everything he has stood for as a proud military man is being shredded in front of his eyes. (you can see it here or here
We’re all pitching in and helping each other — Joe was close to Bob today, so he nailed him on Hastert — while Spazeboy and I were at UConn. Lots of energy from the students at the rally.
People are rumbling about the campaign — hey, this is a marathon. We’re at about mile 10 of 27. At this point in August, we were 20 points down, now it’s about 10. Ned’s fear ad, first broadcast yesterday demands your attention by starting with that scream and being in B&W like the Iraq ad. IMHO, Lieberman is still polling well because of the name recognition. When people get in that booth, and have to go down SEVEN lines to Lieberman, we’ll see the real results.
What’s really needed at this point is phone canvassing. People are not tuned in yet the way we junkies are. When Lamont callers and canvassers start telling people about Joe — they nearly fall over. It is all about the one-to-one education effort — and you all can phone from wherever you are. Check the Lamont Web site.
Ned still has great crowds while Joe does very few public appearances that aren’t set up with carefully screened attendees. The debate Monday even 10/23 with Stephanopoulous moderating should be interesting. I’m betting it will be live on C-SPAN. But, against the home NY Giants playing Monday night football, it won’t get the greatest viewership.
We’re doing well, working hard and trying to pace ourselves over the next 30 days, while we all work at our full-time jobs and miss our significant others. Thanks for all of your support!

Argh. I’ll probably be sleeping. This new schedule change (5 p.m. – 1.30 a.m., plus a longer commute) is driving me batty. I like it. But it’s still a big change.
If I get used to it soon enough, I’ll be pounding some pavement for Ciro. I haven’t seen one sign up for him yet, and I’d really like to have him for a Congressman. Anyone but Bonilla! Hm. Maybe it’s time to do a bit of snooping for photos of Bonilla smiling beside Hastert or Foley. And hm… Wonder about his campaign contributions. That puto would take money from Satan if it would keep him in Washington (which, honestly, is better than having the cabron here-but not as my Rep!).
