GOP Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert is claming his memory is faulty and that he can't remember whether or not GOP head of the RNCC Tom Reynolds told him there was problem with GOP House member Mark Foley and inappropriate sexual behavior toward a congressional page earlier this year.
John Laesch, Hastert's Democratic opponent (and Iraq war veteran) appeared on Hardball this week and reminded everyone of Hastert's own words (video Crooks & Liars):
MATTHEWS: Do you believe that Denny Hastert is a man of character?
LAESCH: I think that this issue has defined the clearest difference between myself and Mr. Hastert, that being I stand for honesty and integrity..
MATTHEWS: And he doesn‘t?
LAESCH: … and I‘ll let the voters decide where he stands.
MATTHEWS: But you‘re not challenging his character here or word? Is that right? You don‘t challenge his word here? You think he might be telling the truth?
LAESCH: I will challenge his word. I‘ll get out there and say so. On page 186 of Dennis Hastert‘s book, he says that he listens to everything, and, you know, he knows everything that is going on. Use his words. Apparently he forgot, but on page 186 of his book, he says he listens to everything and he remembers everything.
John is one of our Blue America candidates whose campaign is getting a lot of attention, and the more people know about him the more they like him. We've raised about $7500 for John over the past few days and the money will go to show people there is a viable alternative to Hastert. New scandals emerge every day, and not only can the GOP not stop the bleeding, they're making it worse by sending in Dubya to throw him an anvil (who next, Mr. 18% JAR?)
John's a great candidate. You can help him out here.

I’m beginning to feel, “Glad All Over”.
I’d like to say this should really puncture Hastert’s gasbag, but even that metaphor makes me nauseous.
Frankly I’m in favor of anything that will keep me from ever again having to watch footage of Hastert walking. Except maybe into a prison.

Nice list of Repubs on the official house “vacancy” status list, with Foley topping it. Hope we’ll be adding sex crimes facilitator Denny to it soon….
Delicious Irony. Now if we can overcome the 40% paperless vote and the photo ID voter requirements, we could actually win this thing in November.
angie!
This entire mess makes me ill. Throw the lying, enabling idiots out. And then in jail.
There’s no polling for Haster because he was (and likely still is) considered unbeatable. Hopefully this issue will shine enough light to change that.
Oh DAMN!! Nice slam. Pg 186 baby! ROFL!
Oh and a little OT info:
Just heard on npr that Susan Ralston is “stepping down” (?) due to the news that there were over 400 contacts between the WH and Abramoff. Waiting for more, sorry if this has already been posted.

Not to rain on the parade, but its difficult when the one you want to toss out has lots of seniority and brings home tons of bacon. See Mayor Daly comments in Chicago Tribune. Hastert has been good for Chicago by apparent Democratic accounting. How do you clear this incumbant advantage as it plays against even a good blue state candidate? Can or will the Demos crack this linkage if they get the house this time around ?
I didn’t include it in the post because I didn’t want to take the focus off of John but Matthews’ line of inquiry about whether gay people should be allowed in the House or not and their ability to restrain themselves sexually (like these were reasonable questions) is just outrageous.
Anyway if you didn’t click through on the link above to see Petty Officer Laesch receiving one of his many commendations you can do so here. He’s the anti-Hastert, no doubt about it. No wonder Dubya is coming to town (though one has to wonder who thought this was a good idea).
Don’t resign Denny! We like you right where you are….dangly from that chain…all punching bag-like.

Damn fine job Jane. Laesch already got some cash from me and I will give more. What an opportunity he has!

It is a hard problem, but one that must be solved. We cannot allow complacency to allow incompetence and corruption. They all go together as we are seeing in the dismal record of the rubber stamp Rethuglican congress.
Susan Ralston is and always has been an agent for the Philippines. Is anyone surprised?

Dear Jane,
I’d be a terrible Jehovah’s Witness. I don’t seem to be able to proselytize for Ned Lamont. I have a colleague at work who is still registered to vote in Ct and whose Republican parents live in CT. I’ve been trying to talk to her about ditching support for Holy Joe and without success. She told me today that even some Democrats that she knows back in CT are planning to vote for the Party of One.
What should I do? What can I say?

Look all you have to do is start out annoying, move on to being abusive, and finish by telling them they’re going to hell. What’s hard about that?
Boehner claims he warned Hastert about the pedo thing. But outside of ‘warning’ Hastert, Boehner did nothing. I fail to grasp how this is a good defense for Boehner. Boehner is protecting himself and I think, Rove too.
Denny Hastert has been a pimp since he was the monitor on Stanley Peterson’s school bus.

nj progressive –
Did you ask her what issues are most important to her? I’m curious. (You can get information from Ned’s web site regarding where he stands on major issues.)
When we start to prob people like her, they usually are much closer to Lamont than Lieberman in their POV. If it makes sense – just continue the dialogue.
A lot of the indecision right now is over who Ned is and what he stands for – since he’s an unknown quantity. And Joey has built quite a myth around who he is and what he’s done.
That said, if she is a Rep or grew up in a Rep household – there may be nothing you can do. We’re not targeting Republicans.
Jane Hamsher @

On the one hand, it’s outrageous, yes. You and I don’t see any problem with gay people being on Capitol Hill. But on the other hand, the Republicans have been comparing gays to child molesters for quite some time now, and they’ve gone so far as to try to write us out of the Constitution. In that context, I think it’s completely reasonable to ask the Republican Party’s bigwigs if they think it’s okay for gays to be Congressmen, Chief’s of Staff, press secretaries, senior aides, etc. So what do you think, Ken? Should a homosexual be allowed to have your job?

Kean calls for Hastert’s resignation
10/6/2006, 4:35 p.m. ET
By DONNA DE LA CRUZ
The Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) — New Jersey Republican Senate candidate Tom Kean Jr. on Friday called for House Speaker Dennis Hastert to resign over the congressional page cybersex scandal, making him the first major candidate in his party to do so.
“He is the head of that institution and this happened on his watch, and Kean urges House leaders to go further by appointing an outside panel to review the matter immediately,” Kean said in a statement.
Kean, in a tight race with Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez, added that if any members of the party beside Hastert or his staff are found to have covered up knowledge of the scandal, they should also resign or be relieved of their duties.

2) he supports the wars unconditionally
3) he voted and continue the use of cluster bombs against innocents
4) he backed, without condition, Michael Brown
5) when we are in the majority, he will finally vote with us– MAYBE– but, he will never say he is sorry. He has not brought much of anything good to CT (though he whines that he has). He “got” Groton in exchange for his support of the wars and b/c he coulda been the sec def for this monstrous admin…

Both groups already know they are going to lose the House but this kind of self destructive behavior is more in line with the ideological/theological purity of the movement conservatives who may see this as a chance to eliminate the whole top tier of an insufficiently rigorous Republican leadership.
Jane……..anyway that we the American people could petition the people below to have a party…..or kind of DEMAND they have a “party?” An interesting and eye catching petition it would be indeed. That way they could kinda find ways to have a “good time” and “share” what they have in common over a “bowl of hot punch” so to speak. Ya know? Sort of come together………….. Maybe they could even discuss (during dessert-maybe we could contribute the dessert recipe from the Firedoglake recipe cache) how to be able to KICK THE BASTARDS THAT HAVE RUN THIS COUNTRY INTO THE GROUND BACK TO THE HOLE THEY CRAWLED OUT OF????
But seriously…..we can’t just hold Republicans accountable. We the American people have to insist that these people below, add or subtract a few, put aside their differences and “have a party.” I can just see it now.

Thanks for all the good advice. My colleague explained to me that one objection to Lamont is that he was just a local Selectman, 20 years ago. I said that he was building a successful business, and pointed out that people get elected to Congress from many walks of life, not just as lawyers.
My colleague also mentioned that Lieberman’s done a lot for CT. I said that Joe hasn’t done nearly as much as he’d like to take credit for, and that in the future I hope we’ll be having less gov’t spending by earmarks, and more in programs that have accountability.
My colleague also pointed out that CT political parties don’t conform to the national image: Republicans in CT are much more liberal than the national party, and Democrats are much more conservative. I said that’s a good reason to support Ned Lamont, because he’s a centrist.
And then I laughed and gave my line about not being able to hack it as a Jehovah’s Witness. Just not good at proselytizing.
Could someone explain this headline from TPM muckraker “Hastert: I Want a Good Thorough Probe”
Cannon’s got himself in a hole. And the whole “prank” story seems to be falling apart. Oops.
According to a late story (4PM ET) in the WaPo, Foley has done what the pope could not – get diocesan leaders and a major abuse victim’s rights groups to agree. Both the spokeswoman for the Diocese of Palm Beach and the national director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) are demanding that Foley reveal the name of the clergyman whom he claims abused him.
For those not familiar with the details of the Roman Catholic clergy abuse scandals, the diocese of Palm Beach had not one but two former bishops admit to sexual abusing minors. Foley grew up there and went to catholic schools, so his allegations just light up every latent bit of “here we go again” that’s left in the Catholic community in Palm Beach. To have the diocese and SNAP both demanding that Foley name names is amazing.
Where do the Illinois union groups stand on Hastert? Have they endorsed Laesch? It’d be nice to see a lot of feet on the pavement in Illinois during the next few weeks.
Cannon thought he could go on radio and say outrageous stuff and get away with it … opps! Wolfie did go after him on each quote and that was fun to watch.

on tuckie the nappie.
When Hastert said he “takes responsibility,” what exactly did he take responsibility for?
Read his statement, and he actually takes no responsibility for anything. Foley is responsible for sending the emails, of course. The Dems and George Soros are responsible for leaking them. He’s asked about his staff’s role, but answers with doublespeak – which says in essence, “I’m not responsible for my staff.”
Hastert’s statement accepting responsibility seems to be little more than a sentence that says “my name is at the top of the House table of organization.” Everyone else is to blame for this mess, it seems, but not Dear Denny.
John might want to ask Denny to make his acceptance of responsibility a bit more specific. Any enterprising reporters lurking around here might want to do the same.

Correct me if I am wrong but I think that I have read, but don’t remeber where, that Brian Ross has indicated that his source is a Republican. I have been wondering who it is since the story broke as I am sure the GOP has also. My gut feel is that this whole mess has been known about for years and both parties let it go on. That’s why I think it is tied into the NIE and a member of the CIA is Ross’s source. I am sure it is not the Democratic party because they would have used it in 2000 or 2002 and of course in 2004 to derail the GOP juggernaught. Whoever exposed it, all I want to say is Thank you!!!
