[Update: Howie's got a diary over at Kos. If you're a Kossak, please stop by and recommend.]
Howie Klein has done amazing things since taking over stewardship of our Blue America page, most notably the production of the "Had Enough" campaign song with our own commenter Tommy Yum (of the Squirrel Nut Zippers) and Ricki Lee Jones. It's been a godsend to small but oh-so-important campaigns as Democrats across the country fight to take back the house.
Now with the help of another one of our commenters, Jacqrat (who is also a media buyer) our Blue America PAC is raising money to do media buys in targeted areas on behalf of our progressive candidates. So we're having a contest. Says Howie:
You can go see the new Al Franken movie, Al Franken: God Spoke; in fact you should. And you can watch the trailer. You should and here it is. But what you can't do is go buy the dvd for this wonderful movie. I guess in a few weeks or so you'll be able to. But right now, there's only one way to get your very own dvd of Al Franken: God Spoke: enter the Blue America raffle. Not only do I have 5 beautiful mint advance copies, each one has been autographed by Al specifically for Blue America.
OK, so here's the deal. We want to run targeted radio spots customized for some of our candidates, based on the song "Have You Had Enough?" We've raised nearly $10,000 for this, using the Blue America PAC, so far. Take a look. Now, for every $25 you donate between now and midnight (your time) you get one raffle ticket. Tomorrow morning when I wake up I'll put them all in a box and grab 5 and the 5 winners each get an autographed dvd. If you donate $50 you get two tickets. If you donate $100, you get 4 tickets. See how it works– $25 per chance.
So please visit our Blue America page and help out if you can. And you can click on the above YouTube and hear Howie tell the story that made me entrust our Blue America project to him in the first place — how he got hoodwinked into giving money to the wrong candidate and has been doing penance ever since (you'll have to listen to the YouTube to hear who it is, but trust me, it's baaad).

FITZ! Thanks Howie, and everyone else, for all the hard work.

What a great story. And I like what Howie says at the end about Ned Lamont giving him reasons to support Ned, and not be just against Loserman.

Hail Jane, Christy, Howie, Al and firepups here, there & everywhere!
I know this doesn’t belong in the comments on this particular post. But every once in awhile I take pause and reflect on humanity, and in this case a mother’s love for her son and a son’s respect for his mother.
NEW YORK — An exhibit at the Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum explores the life of Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy through personal papers and photographs that were donated to the library by her family in 2004. This historical collection spans 1878 to 1995. The grand matriarch of what’s been called America’s Royal Family apparently kept everything — every letter, every memento and scrap of paper. There are close to 200,000 items.
Some are intensely personal. They weave a portrait of a life that was both charmed and tragic.
In a note to his mother, a young schoolboy named John Kennedy, the future president of the United States, misspells his own name. There are so many “Dear Mother” letters. In one, her son Jack, all grown up and in the White House, gently scolds his mother for writing Soviet leader Nikita Kruschev, asking that he autograph some photos.
The president said to his mother, quote: “Requests of this nature are subject to interpretations, and therefore I would like to have you clear them before they are sent. “Rose Kennedy wrote back to her son the way only a mother can: “I am so glad you warned me about contacting heads of state … as I was just about to write to Castro.”
Jeeze. I miss my Mom.
Oklahoma kiddo, I loved that. Thanks for posting it.

Here is the ad I would like to hear (just replace Michelle Bachmann with the Republican of your choice or even Joe Lieberman) in the tone of your choice, but I prefer a nice over-the-top pissed-off sarcasm to start, the middle resigned and the last lines deliberate.
Here ’tis:
If you like George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and Dennis Hastert, then you are going to LOVE MICHELLE BACHMANN. Because MICHELLE BACHMANN agrees with those guys on almost every single issue! From ending funding for stem cell research, to phasing out Social Security and all the way to endless war on Iraq, MICHELLE BACHMANN just LOVES George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and Dennis Hastert’s policies. She can’t get enough!
And that’s fine….
As for me, I’ve had enough! This November I’m voting for CHANGE, I’m voting BACKBONE, and this November, I’m voting for PATTY WETTERLING for the US Congress and I hope you will too.
thanks for linky twolf
Hi ya’ll. Good to be back in the USA!
Damn, Damn, DAMN!
I would like to take this moment to nominate Mr. Olbermann for the Medal of Freedom.

I just hope Keith has his own security precautions in place and a good lawyer that will know what to do if he disappears.
The toobz seem to have eaten my comment on Olbermann’s Special Comment.
I said it was incredible, he deserves a Pulitzer Prize, and I hope he is able to keep his job.
It’s really rather remarkable that he is doing this.
Sharkbabe, it was called “All the President’s Lies,” and he talked about how Boosh is going around the country to speak at Republican fundraisers, and saying things like the Democrats don’t think we should be listening to conversations with terrorists, and the Democrats think the best way to deal with terrorists is to do nothing and wait for them to attack again. He read Chimpy the riot act 16 different ways, calling him a liar and much more. I’m looking forward to seeing the repeat on Crooks & Liars, and bookmarking it for posterity.
rwcole!
My god that Keith dressing-down of Mr. Fake President Cokehead Psycho is simply stunning. We do have an Ed Murrow in the house and he’s more pissed and Murrowesque with every passing second. He’s gonna make history like Murrow too. Guy doesn’t give a shit about being a successful star in this fucking horrorshow anymore. I think he’s into shaming the whole MSM.

It’s worth repeating one more time. They have a comment page over there folks. Go tell Keith what you think of his latest.
Oh- Howie’s article also has a poll! Like that idea. Just because it’s fun, with a serious purpose.
It’s too bad Ms. magazine has to go back to its roots. Haven’t we evolved since then?
http://www.chicagotribune.com/…..9291.story
I’mma buy me a copy.
Knowledge of Foley’s unsavory activities go all the way up the Grand Old Party ladder. Bush knew about Foley because Rove did. Rove knew about Foley’s gutter escapades because Boehner did. Boehner knew about Foley because Hastert did. Hastert knew about Foley because he was told by a former senior aide to Mark Foley who “said he repeatedly had warned Hastert’s top aide about Foley’s inappropriate behavior toward underage pages more than two years ago.”
I think Keith is ONE special comment away from calling for impeachment.
A little bit OT, but quite important. From the Washington Examiner (via Raw Story) “Cheney flatly rejected predictions by pundits that Democrats will take control of the House and Senate in November.
“We will retain control of both houses,” he said.”
Just a few days ago I recall reading that Bush also snapped, “it ain’t gonna happen” at someone who asked about the Dems taking control of the House.
With two Carrier Groups (lots of ships with lots of nasty weapons) scheduled to be in the Persian Gulf by late October, I fear a Rovian one/two punch. Attack Iran just before the election, then Diebold the election. Sigh. I also fear that Foleygate is serving as a useful distraction away from Bush/Cheney’s plan to attack Iran. Sigh some more.
How do you do a recommend at Kos? I see boxes for Jane and siun, but not for Howie.
Eleanor Smeal was on Carlson last nite and she was brilliant, imo.
wow… john’s already got keith up at c&l… i’m downloading it now, but it’s going a little slow… bet i’m not the only one who can’t wait to see it.

Okay, I’m in for two chances. I love that song.
And I love this plan. Thanks for thinking of ways of letting me help.
Another outstanding message from Keith Olbermann tonight.
Words do not express his strength, passion, integrity.
I am bowled over. As an anecdote to the lying weasley snivelly forces of ineptitude, Keith is magnificent.

Ok really off to read Christy’s GOTV thread, then catch up with things Howie. I did stand with a sign last weekend for awhile, but personal rage does little compared to synergy.

OT, but thanks to reading Howie’s blog DWT, I finally went and checked out the blogger site where the first emails were posted. I am somewhat ashamed of myself for not having looked sooner, and for making the totally unwarranted assumption that the blog was created to provide the Foley emails. NOT at all. Just a heads up for anyone else who may have been reluctant to check out the blogger’s site, for one reason or another. Power to the Toobz! Blogger power!

Keith O. is my Prozac.
OT, but in typing this thanks to Keith, I realized I wished to share a great woman with the FDL community. BTW, she can not wait to throw the bums out in November.
My mother celebrated her 80th birthday this past Monday.
She had to scrape enough money together to hand sew a dress so that she wouldn’t look “poor” when her class went to see “Gone With the Wind” in 1939 (she was 13). She drove a laundry truck, bussed heavy automat trays and stuffed dill in pickle jars on an assembly line during WWII, while taking stenography classes (she didn’t have the luxury of wealth for college). Lived through the spectre of McCarthyism, the fear of the Bay of Pigs (but not so scared that she didn’t start her family at the age of 36). Witnessed the horrors of Vietnam. Put plastic on windows and closed off some of the rooms in our home during the energy crunch. Managed to put three girls through college and pay for it.
She votes every election, and yes, she is a Roosevelt Democrat.
She called me after Keith’s special comment tonight.
“I’ve never seen a journalist speak such truth in such a manner. It scared me to death for him, but made me so proud. It makes me want to thank him and give him a hug.”
She makes me proud.

Thanks Angie! I just felt that through all that she has lived and seen, the fact that she felt that what Keith is doing is unprecedented, well, it just speaks to the history that we are witnessing with his words.
watertiger @ 78
That’s good news. Let that endorsement be the cement boots that take him right to the bottom.
Wonderer @ 54
Don’t fear it. One of the Rovian tactics is “creating an air of inevitability” — meaning that they talk that way to make you think they’re confident, not because they actually are.
I don’t doubt that Diebold is a risk, but if they had that locked up, the NRCC wouldn’t be spending bundles of money in places like Wyoming and Idaho. Vote suppression is a more serious worry, and both the air of inevitability and the “Diebold makes it hopeless” meme feed into that.
I’m certain Cheney wants to attack Iran, but if they do it or even make serious threats before the election, gas prices will go through the roof, and after a couple of years of “a vote for Republicans is a vote for more war,” I don’t think there’s enough rally round the flag left to counteract that. They may be incompetent at everything else, but they’re cunning campaigners, and everything they do is for political purposes.
In any case, the best antidote to all those things is to keep working GOTV so we have too much of a margin for them to overcome, keep watching for ditry tricks, keep warning of Republican wars-to-win-elections so if they do try it, it’s seen as cynical and immoral, not patriotic.

Completely agree.
This is a drive-by post, just popping in with a kinda-related question:
Jacqrat, if you wanted to line up an advertiser for ‘Iraq For Sale,’ where would you even start? I have a crazy scheme to turn it into a downloadable media/podcast and use an ad-share model to pay its director. Objective is to get a lot more people to see it and not cannibalize their DVD sales revenue.
Jane, a publicly traded client of mine has bought a couple of podcasting companies and is trying to buy more. So I already have an excellent place to handle all the download details, and they love the idea. We just need to get Mr. Greenwald some willing advertisers, and of course his go-ahead. Sound crazy yet?
Now, off to my neighborhood bistro! Lord Baby is with Lord Wife tonight! (I’ll check back later.)

Howie — you shouldn’t be too shy to post the video. You are absolutely adorable in it. :) It is always so fun to see people in person, after e-mailing them so much and talking on the phone. And the real Howie just shines through in this video — what a joy.
Thanks so much for all your amazing work on Blue America. I tell you this all the time, but I want to say it in the comments — this really is my very favorite thing that we do on the blog. Kudos to you, Howie!

But I really want to see Pombo gone (go Jerry McNerney). And a little money could go a long way out in OH-2, where Dr. Wulsin is battling the Wicked Witch of the Midwest.
I am assuming Olbermann must have gotten some form of strong commitment of support from the MSNBC suits before launching his Special Comments, or at least before airing this one tonight. Otherwise, one phone call from Rove and he would be gone. Is the fact he is able to do this a sign that the Repugs’ iron grip on the TV networks is slipping?

YAY, Howie! You are a natural.
“Midterm Madness
FOLEY AND REPUBLICAN GOTV. Last week, former Rep. Mark Foley (R-Fla.) become the fourth House Republican to resign in disgrace, get brought up on criminal charges, or both, in less than a year. With this in mind, GOP campaign strategists are beginning to wonder whether these salacious scandals might depress turnout among the party’s “value voter” base.
“A social conservative may think, ‘Well, Democrats aren’t going to represent the legislation I want to see passed, but the Republicans aren’t representing me,’” said Tom McClusky, vice president of government affairs at the Family Research Council.
“They may just decide to stay home,” according to Mr. McClusky, who said many conservative voters are rightly “disgusted.”
Bob Bennett, the veteran Ohio state Republican chairman, predicted there would be damaging political fallout from the Foley scandal, and several Republican campaign pollsters and strategists say it may give Democrats the final push they need to capture the House.
“If you think Foley doesn’t have an impact on the electorate, someone is kiddingthemselves,” said Mr. Bennett, whose state was pivotal in the last presidential election and has several hotly contested races, including the re-election bid of Republican Sen. Mike DeWine, which polling shows is statistically tied.
For months, polls have shown a lack of enthusiasm among Republican voters about the upcoming election cycle. Party leaders nationwide seem to believe the Foley sex scandal may very well make a bad situation worse.”
“The GOP has become a walking soap opera,” said Craig Shirley, a Republican Party consultant. “The only scandal that hasn’t been visited upon the Republicans is Paris Hilton.”
–Steve Benen, The Carpetbagger Report

Well, there’s the fact that as VP nominee in 2000, he rolled over for Cheney, and then licked his hand, in their debate, and I believe he made some public statements in Florida during the election-stealing that were not helpful to the Clinton/Gore ticket, something to do with absentee ballots, does anyone remember?

Well, when I was at dinner with Howard Dean the night before last (*brag*), he was saying that one of the ways the blogs are helpful is that the media read them obsessively. I’d guess this is an example, eh?
Go Team Blue!
Reuters and Zogby teamed up to poll 15 of the most competitive House races in currently Republican districts, and they came up with some worrisome news for the GOP. (Not coincidentally, 15 is the number of seats Democrats need to win the House.)
The surveys showed Democrats leading in 11 of the districts surveyed.

Well, just off the top of my head – why not a brand of bottled water (tie in with the guy that cries when he talks about serving polluted water to the troops).
Alcohol companies always have large discretionary budgets for sponsorships. But…. kinda tacky.
I thought about long-term health care companies, but they are as crooked as the corporations Glenn highlights in the film…
Might look into green companies … Move-on and Purple Ocean might have money but, their very involvement might turn potential audience away…
Online-content companies? Netflix? I am free-associating, here.
Anyone else have an idea for MarcLord?
I will never catch up with the comments today but I would like to suggest something that occurred to me as I sat through the first minutes of Tucker Carlson tonight and he had Noron give a report.
I read earlier on FDL that Nancy Pelosi turned down Hastert’s suggestion of Louis Freeh as an investigator because the Dems wanted a larger and more thorough investigation
Noron just reported that Pelosi turned down Hastert and “she did not know why,” leaving the impression that Pelosi was an obstructionist in the effort to get to the bottom of this mess.
My suggestion would be for the Dems to have a “War Room” as Clinton did iirc., to counter this MSM slanted reporting to favor the Repubs.
At the very least, from now on, Pelosi, Reid, or one of the people speaking for the Dems. put the responses in the form of a press release that the MSM cannot twist to their purposes.
Sorry the rant is so long.

Yes. I was thinking more on this last night. You need to find a company that wants to align itself with the film’s message, or get in front of the people who will be watching it.
