Christy @ 130: It’s your blog and you can put whatever pictures you want on it. I just never thought I’d see voting as sexy on firedoglake.

I’ve stopped watching TV because I’m so tired of seeing women portrayed as nothing but eye candy. I thought I had a couple of places to go where I wouldn’t have to be on guard. It just really took me aback. I wasn’t expecting it here.

Older women like me fought hard to have women taken seriously. And it’s difficult to accept that our work isn’t really appreciated…I guess us old women libbers are quaint…just like the Geneva Convention. The Backlash continues.

Sting? Sexy?

Fun way to make voting more interesting for the public, don’t you think?

If someone needs to see a poster like this in order to inspire them to vote, I would aver that the electorate and the commonweal are better off having that individual stay home and not vote at all.

The hard truth of the matter is that voting, and political involvement in general, are often just plain old boring hard work.

Absolutely necessary boring hard work. Critically important boring hard work. Boring hard work without which the nation will ultimately fail and fall.

But if someone isn’t prepared to do the boring hard work of poring through the fine print of ballot measures, and looking at the actual legislative records of candidates, rather than being swayed by expensive staged video commercials and recycled movie one-liners, then they are not prepared to act as a competent voter.

Voting is not a fashion statement. Nor is voting a lifestyle choice. Nor is voting a piece of glossy accessory baggage. Nor is voting a shiny new consumer toy. Voting is a civic duty, with all that implies.

lol. Last week Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenow VOTED FOR the fence and VOTED FOR the torture/revocation of civil liberties bill. I have worked on her behalf for nearly thirty years in her rise from county commissioner to state rep. to state senator to Congress and finally the Senate. I can’t forgive her votes and called her office to register my disgust (i’d called earlier this year to register support for Feingold’s anti-war efforts). For some reason her staff person thought the Senator could write a letter to explain her votes. Egad!!
I’ll be skipping the Senate line on my November ballot; can’t vote Repug and won’t reward inexcusable votes; if I wanted a Bush administration lackey, I’d vote Repug.

My take on the photo as a selling piece:
The most serious problem imo is that it’s unclear whether the model is wearing any clothes. As a symbol, that ambiguity, set in a public place, leaves it in a bucket with a lot of pornography that is frankly misogynist, imo.

Well said. I was trying to find the words to explain why I find this image so upsetting, and you found them for me. Thanks, John.

A very late note, mainly to Christy. Can’t please everyone, I suppose… but I (female) liked it a lot. I thought that the legs were really sexy and I quite admired the shoes (I am a sucker for shoes). Since my legs are my only really good feature, I’m always happy when legs are equated with sexiness.

I’m with Slade and Kelly. The legs ad is incredibly stupid, not just objectifying. Getting women to vote Democratic will be a very significant goal of any Democratic success next month. This ad can be read in a number of ways (salacious by those more conservative, torture-by-footbinding by the more liberal) that are counterproductive. But beyond the stupidity is the in-the-face sexism. There’s enough of this crap being broadcast 7×24 by the ad-wielding Republican-funding goose-stepping plutocrats without us adding to it. We’re in the realm of public discourse here, not the private realm of foot fetishism or whatever…

Two statements that I cannot agree with:

lhp:

I really should not be allowed on the internet without a minder. Between the typos and the tech foulups, I am a menace

Can we take a vote on that?

and ck:

Two Points — the female form is sexier than the male;

 Ummm, not so much.

Gotta run, and don’t know how to link, but MoveOn.org has a great and simple way couch potatoes can help gotv. Even an idiot like me can understand it and do it. I made 70 gotv calls in an hour (only reached 15 live people). If you’ve got an hour a week, and are interested check it out.

slade at 127 — considering the variety of pix we’ve used, including my occasional photo of Sting for a post here and there, that is just bunk. And you read here enough to know that. And the point of this pix, as I explained above, was to stimulate some discussion on what does and doesn’t work for this sort of ad work — if it doesn’t work for you, fine, but inaccurate hyperbole about this blog is not appreciated.

karen jacobs @ 226

I came in this morning especially to see if I could post a campaign idea. So here it is:

Instead of candidates for Congress mailing out giant plackards extolling themselves or slinging accusations at their opponent, I would like to see single-issue “when I am elected, I will . . .” postcards.

I believe that this would be a cost-effective way of communicating with voters. I definitely would want to vote for someone who makes an unequivical statement that I could conveniently keep for future reference. In addition to mailing “pledge postcards,” they would be useful as handouts for supporters to distribute. Note: One sheet of heavy 8.5″ x 11″ cardstock paper = 4 standard postcards {4.25″ x 5.5″}.

Another way to do postcard mailings: I have mailed 4″ x 6″ photos with a small message on the
back left side with the address and stamp on the right side. Candidates could take and send a photo of an event they attended with a reminder, “I enjoyed having the opportunity to talk at {this event}. If I overlooked a question you have, please call {phone number}.” ***obviously, the number has to go to a live person 24/7 through the week of the election; and they have to be able to contact and get answers from the candidate if necessary for a call back to the voter.

Any candidate for public office is welcome to use this idea with my sincere best wishes.

WHEW! glad this is done, and still in time if someone can use it.

^..^

I just posted the above at TRex USO Tour, and wonder if it would be appropriate here.

^..^

Wonderful idea. I’m sending it on to someone here in Ohio. Thanks!
