Some interesting news for your reading pleasure -- or disgust, as the case may be:
-- Just a reminder that we'll be having our first FDL Film Salon this afternoon with Robert Greenwald of Iraq for Sale at 2:00 pm PT/5:00 pm ET. Hope everyone can join us!
-- MSNBC reports that the FBI has requested that Foley's computer and other electronic equipment from his Congressional office be preserved for evidentiary purposes. (I listen to Rita Cosby so you don't have to...)
-- CNet reviews an IM-scanning safetyware program to protect your kids from "a Foley." (H/T to Rayne for this find -- that was a quick leap into the lexicon, wasn't it?)
-- Wes Clark will be campaigning with Ned Lamont in Connecticut on Friday -- Ted Kennedy is there today, just FYI. (One wonders what the Clintons are doing next week...since I hear that Kerry will also be campaigning for Ned, and Edwards already has, and that Warner is working with the Lamont campaign as well...hmmmm...)
-- Froomkin's White House Briefing is a Must Read today -- fantastic compendium of issues.
The only thing anyone wants to hear from the president right now is his reaction to the Congressional page-sex scandal revolving around former representative Mark Foley and rapidly enveloping the GOP House leadership. On top of that, the public doesn't trust him. A fresh round of polls shows that most Americans think Bush has been intentionally misleading about the progress in Iraq, they oppose his war there, and they don't think it's making them safer. His approval rating is back down to a dismal 39 percent.
And establishment Washington has finally and conclusively written him off as being in a state of denial.
And that is just for starters. Great read from start to finish today.
-- Digby asks about the silence of Holy Joe. (As Atrios says, "wishes are not ponies.")
-- Joseph Califano has some thoughts on the state of the House of Representatives under the Republican leadership:
The most troubling aspect of the Mark Foley scandal is not his conduct, disgusting as it was, but what the response of the leadership reveals about the rancid state of partisanship and the consequent decline of the House of Representatives. Speaker Dennis Hastert presides over a legislative body so infested with mistrust that it doesn't even have a functioning ethics committee. Since the House is incapable of washing its own dirty laundry and policing itself, the speaker has to turn over that responsibility to the attorney general and the executive branch of government.
-- The NYTimes says that Hastert is going to fight back to keep his job. Well, that should be interesting. Anyone want to talk odds on the buses versus Hastert question?
-- Perhaps Denny ought to talk with Roy Blunt, since he's been talking to Forbes about Hastert's questionable leadership.

“So why do I fear for Olbermann? Because I know his bosses. In the runup to the Iraq war, I too worked for MSNBC – as an on-air pundit and a senior producer on the primetime Donahue show.”

Here’s another link about Kirk Fordham’s resignation/firing: http://blogs.abcnews.com/thebl.....affer.html
Let’s see what happens next…
Stephen Parrish, CPA @ 1
ha! seems that the firings (resignations) will continue… things are pretty “quiet”; anybody from the “leadership” doing talk radio today?
I think the FBI’s a little late on the requesting the computer thing…

Lying room only under the bus.
Somehow this reminder got deleted in the post the first time through — I’ve updated above but I don’t want anyone to miss this:
Just a reminder that we’ll be having our first FDL Film Salon this afternoon with Robert Greenwald of Iraq for Sale at 2:00 pm PT/5:00 pm ET. Hope everyone can join us!
So the FBI “requests” Foley’s computer be “preserved”?
Isn’t that kid-glove treatment Christy?
Doesn’t a law enforcement office usually secure evidence themselves so that no tampering can happen? I don’t get this. *Maybe* they learned (from the Jefferson incident) not to waltz into a congressperson’s office and take stuff. Maybe. Or maybe this is by directive of the DOJ and friends?
It’s a shame we automatically think the worse.
Wishes are not ponies…My grandfather used to say “If wishes were horses, beggers would ride…”
Does anyone have faith in the executive branch and the Attorney General to truly investigate this? Gonzales works for Bush, not us. If we’re going to place bets, I’d bet that the cover-up goes straight up to that office. The corruption is thorough and all-encompassing. Ordinary citizens are starting to see through the lies and the criminality thanks to the nation’s “leadership.”

Thanks, Christy. I’m about to watch it now.

Wow, thanks Stephen Parrish. One down!
BTW and way OT (and way hard to write), I could use a little FDL community energy and love. The mass they took off my neck this week (giving me a lovely Frankenstein zipper scar just in time for Halloween) was cancer and now I get onto the wonderful and exciting cancer treatment treadmill. If y’all can light some virtual candles for my household I’d be grateful. Thanks.
I heard something about this on NPR’s news at the top of the hour:

marksb– done! blessings and much hope heading your way.

Yesterday’s metaphor for Foleygate was “tip of the iceberg”. With Fordham off to spend more time with his family, the new metaphor should be that of an avalanche, as in “the first resignation will snowball into a full-fledged avalanche of resignations from the Republican leadership.”

You’re welcome - and we will all have to wait almost three hours from now for the FDL Film Salon.
Condi has two very “profound” messages for the people of the Middle East and the world today. First, she tells Hamas they cannot “rule the region”. That’s acceptable, because ruling the Middle East is reserved for the only nuclear power in the area, the Israeli government. By consent naturally. Our consent, that is. And then this sage Rice informs us that the “U.S. will help the Palestinians”. Help the Palestinians do what, exactly?

FBI: We’re on top of this. BTW what are computers?
Stephen Parrish — oh, thanks for that bit, hadn’t caught that yet out of Detroit on Patriot Act.
Apropos of nothing except backgrounder, Judge Denise Page Hood, if memory serves, also handled some of the bankruptcy stuff for Dow Corning on breast implant litigation, if memory serves correctly.
That’s the second important bit I got from NPR today.
If you have the chance, see if you can find and listen to an interview aired this morning on NPR with John Yoo, author of far too many evil positions for this administration. To hear him questioned on S. 3930 Torture Bill will bring one immense soul-searing pain, but it’s necessary to hear how dispassionately Yoo reflects upon the plight of persons taken into custody and detained — regardless of whether they are charged or no, or innocent or no.
If I were by some freak of fate to be sworn in as President after the 2008 elections, I would immediately have John Yoo picked up and detained on suspicion of seditious acts, for conspiring to undermine the Constitution and the fabric of this nation. I would put him in Gitmo — and I’d leave him there, to the letter of S. 3930 that he so fondly embraces.
If only wishes were ponies…there would be real justice and just deserts.
meta @ 10
The Attorney General and the rest of the Bush legal team, give lawyers their much undeserved bad-rap reputation. Sooner or later, at the very least, Gonzales should be disbarred. He is a disgrace to the profession.

People familiar with Fordham’s side of the story, however, said Fordham was being used as a scapegoat by Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert.
They said Fordham had repeatedly warned Hastert’s staff about Foley’s “problem” with pages, but little was done.
The complaint about Foley was brought to the chairman of the page board, Congressman John Shimkus (R-IL), last spring, and he then consulted with the Clerk of the House of Representatives, Jeff Trandahl.

Since O’Lielly and someone at the AP want to tinker with Foley’s status as a Congressman, I’d propose this revision, amplifying from Christy’s post/link:

nice list christy
off topic, I need a few opinions here
thanks to the firedogs and the proprietors of the lake, I’ve compiled the following;
so, up until recently everyone (but a few who have a more intimate knowledge of what has happened) was accepting the administrations line that 9/11 was a “failure of inteligence”, that they “had the information but it wasn’t compiled”, that it was a “failure of imagination’
and from the start the dogs at the lake and others following the events have been pointing out that not only was the inteligence precise, that it WAS compiled, that there was NO failure AT ALL, accept among those who didn’t act on some of the the most alarming intel ever gathered
as we look into the claims that Rice was urgently breifed by the cia with the hopes of averting the attack they knew was coming, biefed on a level ten urgency, we find the state department documents those events exactly as the reports and that is indeed what happened
Not only was rice briefed, others as well, the cia was SO concerned about the precise inteligence they had, they had the “highesl level of alert”, and “everyone was running around with their hair on fire”
that’s indictment enough for anyone concerned about America’s national security
here’s a chronology of the events before the successfull attack in the middle of september, an attack we knew was comming yet did nothing to preventl
an alarm from credible sources is calling the cia to action, all of the intel is pointing to one direction, there is an attack comming
our inteligence knows it will involve highjacking and flying commercial airliners into government buildings, we also know they are targeting new york and washington…we confirm with high level of confidence the event will happen due to the unusual level of monetary transfers and comminications, we are pretty certain from this intel the event will occur within weeks, on the outside, months.
Tenet tries to get a meeting with the national security advisor, codoleeza Rice, concerning an attack soon to be delivered at our door, he has precise actionable intelligence and is pretty certain the attack can be averted if we do what we know can be done
Rice refuses the to meet
tenet thinks if he flies down and presents the intelligence in person the urgency will impress rice and she will take the intelligence more seriously…he needs her authorization to take contrill of agencies and programs that will protect America…this has been done before, the template is clear and will Tenet is certain we can avoid the attack if their inteligence is correct.
though Rice tried to deny the breifing, this meeting is documented with minutes, there is nothing to deny..her claim is exposed and here “memory” is embarrassed
at the meeting, Rice gives him the brush off and tells him she’s not going to authorise any of the programs Tenet requests to protect America, he needs to go and tell it to Rumsfeld and Ashcroft, maybe they will
she passes the Buck…maybe she doesn’t have the authority, maybe she doesn’t know if she has the authority, but she moves Tenet along to rumsfeld and ashcroft…tenet thinks Rice doesn’t care, but that’s his opinion, maybe she just can’t do what needed to be done…but she doesn’t raise the alarm to anyone, she claims she forgot the briefing
Tenet does not relent, he flies down to hand deliver his presentation to Rumsfeld and Ashcroft
they also don’t give a flying turd, they do not authorise any action Tenet requests to protect this nation and Tenet doesn’t know what to do next
Tenet has the infamous presidential daily brief written and hand delivered to the president of the United states
title of the brief;
“Bin Laden Determined to Attack the US”
the brief is a concise compilation of the intended targets, the method of attack, where the attack would come from, the exact buildings targeted, and the likely date, probably weeks, on the outside a couple of months
the president is breifed, in person, just as his aids, he also does nothing even though there is a template already created for the action that needs to be taken, none of it is authorised
a summary, from clarke;
pretty simple stuff right there, there were other programs as well, this is a sumary, none of it is done
and then the walls came down
so here’s the question
we know from page 128 that Clinton received an almost identical pdb, clarke tells us the precautions taken to avert the attack
my question is, if Tenet jumped through hoops before he put together the pdb, and the reason the pdb was put together was because no action was taken to prevent the attack, did tenet jump through hoops to get Clinton to respond and when clinton didn’t he out together THAT pdb
in other words, what led to the pdb clinton received
Hastert definitely needs to consult with Trent Lott on crisis management, and seek his support, before it’s too late!

There is a powerful quote from a statement by Ned Lamont up at his official website:
“Secretary Powell is the latest expert to say that it is time for a change, and Connecticut deserves a straight answer from Senator Lieberman about why he continues to ignore these experts by pushing a failed ‘stay the course’ strategy,” said Lamont. “Last week, our intelligence agencies said ‘stay the course’ is endangering our security. Early this week, Bob Woodward reported that the administration has misled the American people about the reality on the ground in Iraq. Now, a distinguished military and diplomatic leader like Colin Powell is saying stay the course is a failed policy. When will Joe Lieberman finally face reality?”
“How much more does America’s national security have to be compromised before Senator Lieberman stops being an apologist for the Bush administration?” Lamont said. “We now have one of the Bush administration’s own national security icons saying it is time for a change. Connecticut deserves a senator who actually listens to our military and intelligence officials – not one who is so reliant on the Bush White House that he refuses to start pushing for a change in a war that is harming our country’s security.”

Rasumussen polls on Bush JAR have never gone below 40 percent for a month. After rising slightly to 42 last month, and as high as 45 percent in February, the number has falled back to 40 percent in the last week.
The “disapprove” rating is now 58 percent (”strongly disapprove now at 44 percent!), one point below its worst (59) rating. These are three-day rolling average polls. The results are in line with two other recent polls showing Bush JAR back down to 39 percent.

Glad to see that. It couldn’t have come soon enough. I hope he takes it two steps further:
1. Extend the “they are making us less safe” to “they are making Israel less safe.”
2. The same kind of thinking that got us bogged down in the Iraq quagmire is going to draw us unto another quagmire in Iran, which will be even worse and more dangerous to our exposed troops in Iraq, to US security interests, and to Israel’s security and survival. This President listens to a reckless crowd, people who have been wrong about everything and then lied about it; and Lieberman has been cheering them along every step. Just listen to what he said in his speeches: . . . .etc. Those are not the words of someone who is going to be asking tough, realistic questions and standing up to those who have misled American into these reckless policies.”

The FBI may have opened an prliminary investigation (PI) or a full blown case file. We don’t know which.
The FBI does not have the right to just waltz in and “secure the evidence”, they need Probabale Cause for a warrant, or at the very least they need a prosecutor to agree to present to a GJ so they can issue a Grand Jury subpeona.
having said that, you might be able to use a “forthwith” subpeona whcih requires the items (like the computer) to be turned over right when you bring a subpaona.
However, considering the pussyfooting around that happened with the Search Warrant the last time, I ma not surprised that the FBI is handling it this way.
Don’t forget, once they make that request anyone so much as touching that computer may put themselves in livne for a destrcution of evidence/obstruction of justice charge.
Even if there is only a civil case, anyone noodling with the computer will cause a spoliation problem.
FBI seems to be going by the book.

Munson Thurd,
Perry Logan’s list seems to have been copied from the Armchair Subversive site, which is more up to date. From some googling today, I can tell you it would be significantly harder to compile a list of democratic pedophiles who held office, I would guess on the order of at least 5:1. This is a rich area for research.

Now about the other shoe that’s been dropping this week: Rice and the damned warnings…
Is the Foley case what it takes to push this beyond a page A-24 single-column report?
I’m wondering if—as Foomkin implies—the Foley case pushes the Press and the public (further) over the edge regarding Bush as well. Could the negative atmosphere being generated by Foley cause these Rice lies to be looked at with more detail and more regard?
Interesting. Quite a study in mass communications and the process of political critical mass.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 88
My concern is the persistent 10 point (some polls) or 2-4 (others) gap. I’ve felt for some time that Lamont needs a sharper attack that goes after that portion of the Dems that Lieberman retains who mistakenly believe the Senator is better on national US and/or Israeli security. There’s enough evidence to shake this grip out there, but it needs to be highlighted by strong campaign statements and ads. If you couple that with suggestion from Book Salon that Lamont go after Joe’s shaky support of social security (his toying with privatization when Bush proposed that), then I think Lamont can start to pull away more of those remaining Lieberman supporters — still over 30 percent of Dems, according to some polls. And I think that’s where the winning margin is. The recent labor endorsements were also quite helpful.
