I'd read about this earlier today on Joementum, but I knew that CTBlogger was going to put up a YouTube and I really wanted to see it with my own eyes before I wrote anything about it. Yep, there's no mistake. Here is Joe Tortureman on Imus, joking about...well, what else, torture:
I have particularly appreciated your interrogation of some of the other Democratic elected officials. And I’m very comforted to know that your interrogation is not covered by Common Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions. Heh-heh-heh.
Oh!!! My sides, my sides. The Geneva Convention is no longer even quaint, it's now devolved into schtick on Imus. Yes, this is how seriously Joe considered his vote to institutionalize the United States as a nation of torturers. Just another rubber chicken to whack the Democrats with, right? Oh I can't breathe. Joe you teh funny. You really are.

KOBE!
I am at a loss for words. POS
To quote my favorite VW commercial, “Oh, schnap!”
That Joe is a funny, funny man alright. If only they had put electrodes on someone’s changepurse, that would have really sealed the gag. Pun intended.
Is it too late to move to CT? I want to move, just to vote against the clown.
When Imus thru his support to Lieberman he lost me. For the first time I thought: “Wow, drugs really do fuck up your brain.”
Words fail me after listening to that freaking f*ckhead.
Making fun of torture and congratulating Imus for interrogating democrats! And this 2 days after the Day of Atonement.
It’s a shanda. (shame on him, really deep dark shame.)
dab — I haven’t seen any story wrt a Lamont comment on Lieberman’s vote on the detainee bill. Is there one?
And Lieberman is being considered to replace Rumsfeld. Still! Which would be worse at the Defense Department. Lieberman or Bolton? Now I ask you.
Joey, you one sick puppy.
Oh, he’s such a kidder. You know, I used to believe that Joe Lieberman wasn’t incompetent enough to be Rumsfeld’s replacement, but he’s starting to win me over.
WTF is he thinking, what exactly what is his position? Even some of the Repubs are yelling at Foley louder than Lieberstink.
I don’t get it, who does he think his constituency is?
My God, Lieberman is such a whiner. After all these years in politics, you think he would have gotten some voice coaching.
Throwing Hastert overboard is like throwing a deck chair off the Titanic. Well, in his case maybe two deck chairs. But they’re taking water fast and the pumps aren’t keeping up.
Regime change here we come.
Is there anyone in the world who does not think that Imus looks like an utter doofus when he’s wearing that hat?
Not terribly undoofusish without the hat, but much more so with it.
Of course I have a blog
Maybe Joe thinks if he can joke about something this obscene, they’ll finally let him into the restricted fraternity that’s running things. This is lower than frat-boy humor.
Any more news on how well Kerry’s visit is helping?
Reading your post I hatched a feverish hope that the “Joementum” moniker can come true in this way:
If Lamont’s campaign can keep stepping up (and if we can keep supporting them! =-) and bring those polls around, perhaps that will build powerful momentum for other races! (Lamont already has, but here’s hoping for more.)
OT Hey SteveAudio- just to let you know that folks will be looking for you on Late Nite- heads up. It started with my question about making an audio of the Greenwald film, and brainstorming went on from there. See comments on http://www.firedoglake.com/200.....-for-sale/
Joe needs to do more TV appearances. He’d be great on The Daily Show.
What an utter embarrassment to the American people.
A cad of the first water.
Making a mockery of the Geneva Conventions, a unifying code of honor that contributed to our now thoroughly debased stature in the global community.
Godwin’s Law is now dead when a so-called man of faith and Jewish heritages sounds like a Nazi.
Disgusting, beyond adjectives and adverbs; worse than a Republican.
I am going to have to find a way to choke out some money to give to Ned Lamont so this horror can be retired.
Wow. Is anyone sure Lieberman is a human?
Maybe more like a twisted Zaphod Beeblebrox?
Joe REALLY needs to quit letting DANGERSTEIN come up with his talking points. It’s getting embarrassing.
Is anyone but me not getting the ‘Refresh Comments’ button when they load the page?
Juck Loe Fieberman.
is listening to Lieberman called “Joeboarding” or just “boring Joe”?
Jeebus,
I wish Keith would give Joe a slap upside the head.
Maybe then the Dem’s in Charge would do something.
Colin Powell Pins Bush, Lieberman on Iraq
Unfortunately I believe that this is the real Joe talking… not even Dangerstein can curb his rabid tongue and beliefs.
Is there anyone in the world who does not think that Imus looks like an utter doofus when he’s wearing that hat?
I think it’s the cap pistols on his belt and the broomstick horsie by his chair that REALLY make him look like a doofus. I bet when he was eight his mommy told him he couldn’t wear his cowboy costume to school. He’s been trying to get revenge ever since.
Lamont on the torture issue, from his speech of September 13:
Real security in a dangerous world
I wonder if Joe has any other torture jokes up his sleeve.
He should go on the late night comedy shows.
afterthought @ 19
No, Zaphod is two-headed. Joe is two-faced.
Speaking of harassment of young employees, you should the stories about Imus at WNBC long, long ago…
utterly morally and spiritually bankrupt…
Dab? are you here?

Well, I did say twisted, but you are right.
Longtime Republican was source of e-mails
The source who in July gave news media Rep. Mark Foley’s (R-Fla.) suspect e-mails to a former House page says the documents came to him from a House GOP aide.
That aide has been a registered Republican since becoming eligible to vote, said the source, who showed The Hill public records supporting his claim.

scarecrow @ 7
Lamont made a statement but more to the effect that the torture vote was a Rove distraction. He did go on to talk about how reprehensible Lieberman’s vote was - I can’t find it on his web site, but I’m sure it’s there (quite frankly I wish he had hit Lieberman harder)
Lamont did issue a strong comment about Lieberman’s refusal to comment about the latest NIE about Iraq and terrorism.

ot- is anyone watching PBS -moyers on America on the abramoff scandal? I can’t believe what they tried to pull off!!!
Talk about Imus looking ridiculous in that cowboy hat. Lookie a Georgie trying to look oh so cowboyish chopping weeds at his big spread in Crawford. It’s all so phony. What are these guys trying to prove? Most of the real (if you will) cowboys and cowgirls I know here abouts, wear normal clothes. That is… Nikes and whatever.
LindyH @ 32
Yep -
Scarecrow - I’m impressed. I looked through a bunch of Lamont statements but couldn’t his specific comments about the torture bill.

truly.
This Moyers show is puke-inducing, too. Nothing everybody here does not know, but it’ll be news to many. It is factual and chilling.
Delay and now Boehner… all of them getting slammed.
Frank and Ornstein discussing all of this with Moyers.
Just 4 1/2 weeks to Joe’s angry, bitter non-concession concession speech to the sparse crowd of janitorial staff indifferently cleaning the vacant ballroom at the Hyatt. “Who is that asshole?” the guy stacking chairs will ask the man who is vacuuming. “I don’t know,” the vacuuming man will reply. “I think he used to be a Senator.”
Joe is as ‘human’ as Cheney, Bush, Limbaugh, Bill Bennett and all the other sanctimonious liars. Human in name, but ignorant of his true self. I am convinced that Joe is oblivious to his own bullshit. Probably thinks he has a great speaking voice, too. I won’t be surprised if he becomes a lobbyist for Halliburton after his defeat.
hey, Mack!
cleter @ 46
Thanks, Cleter - I needed that. I’ll sleep well tonight with that mental image.
Angie –
Yep. I love Moyers, because he doesn’t pull punches. He calls a crook a crook. I still remember the Moyers Report he did on Watergate and what Nixon’s crowd did to the Constitution. Moyers is not confused by the Fox notions of “fair and balance.” Just Unvarnished Truth.
PBS News Hour: When asked about Foley and the predator scandal, he says some things, and then says that Minnesotans are more concerned about how the Twins are doing.
Once again, is anyone having trouble getting the ‘Refresh Comments’ button to load or is it just my computer?

OT and better on an earlier thread, but I was on an airplane w/o internet connection. The horror.
Is the government lying to us about important things like war? Absolutely. Is the government lying to us about the attack five years ago, and let’s not forget Washington, where I personally saw the Pentagon on fire from the top floor of the courthouse.
Look I don’t know myself where I stand on this continuum but here is an idea I have not to date seen being discussed.
Theory to help bridge the gap between the way out there conspiracy folk and people who won’t go out there but do think that some people in the government knew in advance.
Changes in flights, Sept. 10 stock exchange put options, and so forth.
Personal data: I had a flight for Sept 12 and got a very strange notice in the mail about extremely high security measures. Sure put a lot of question marks in my head a couple of days prior to the event. Ok here is my theory.
If you accept: Some people high in the administration did know in advance there would be SOME kind of attack.
Problem: How could so many Americans go along with such horrific destruction to our country.
Answer: Only a tiny number of people knew the EXTENT of the attack, and their loyalty might be to
censored. Most thought it would be justmissles…oops not supposed to say that!planes flying into buildings; not that they would fall and kill thousands of fellow Americans. The lesson from Germany is that a few evil people, and a relatively small number of acquiescent folks, can bring down a civilized nation.

dab from Ct — just to let you know that the MA Militia and Ladies Auxiliary will be down to CT in the weekends ahead. We haven’t forgotten you.
LindyH @ 53
Great. I’ll shoot you an email.
Well, hmmmm. Ms. Hamsher continues to bring all the ammo via her articles, but somehow it doesn’t yet seem to connect to Ct. voters (via polls I’ve read here).
You know, it almost seems to me that Mr. Lamont has been floundering, and it goes back to late August. Back to when he made his rounds of seeing politicos, including Queen Hillary. And it doesn’t seem that he’s regained that June-July momentum. Yet, via Ms. Hamsher, we all know that there’s SO much good ammo out there for Mr. Lamont.
I HOPE Mr. Lamont has identified the groups who heavily voted for LiarMan in the primary. Those groups ought to be the focus of these final weeks. Blow off the LiarMan R teamers…they’ll never vote D. But at the primary, I have to admit that Liarman got a bunch of votes! Who were/are those folks?
In these final weeks, I hope Mr. Lamont spins up some of his usual, clever ads….but TARGETED to LiarMan’s D base who voted for LiarMan in August. That should be the point of attack. I’d urge Mr. Lamont to blow off his generic ads from pre-primary. Mr. Lamont has his base, and they remain energized. They’re solid. But go get those LiarMan voters from August. TARGET your fire….target your ads, target your position speeches. This I believe, is the path to victory.

I closed firefox and reopened it. Now it’s all better.
coouple of things, all ot but important
raw story now has it up, another page talking about foley’s messaging
that’s the first, the second is about the rice breifing telling us we were about to be attacked
I’ve been trying to get who else was at the tenet presentation to rice
cressey tells us who else, I got this from c&l
I’ll tell you what
the democrats aren’t taking advantage of this, this is KEY
it is OBVIOUS 9/11 would NOT have happened if ANYONE else were in office
obvious by the performance of the previous administration given a LESS credible threat
and obvious that this president stood down
this is what has to be brought up
NOT by sighting the fact and then leveling charge, but by leveling the contempt and THEN giving the fact
for instancee, NOT;
“we find out from the state department that the president was warned and did nothing to defend this country”
but like so;
“this is the most INEPT president in the history of America, the persident KNEW there was going to be an attack and did NOTHING, we KNOW this is what happened, there are official documents that tell us this”
THAT’S the way to take CHARGE in the war of words
Sharkbabe! too kind….

TRex have you tried restarting your computer? There are times when that is all that will work for me. Sure beats the old days of dialup, though.
Hey TRex, when will your LN be up? Eagerly awaiting.
Ghostman @ 68
Ghostman - I couldn’t agree with you more. Lamont has been put in a terrible position, reminded again and again that he’s running against a fellow Democrat (which is BS). I think rather than give Lamont a boost - all the readjustment that went on in August integrating what little Dem support he was getting - almost took the wind out of his sails.
Lamont has been constrained and Lieberman hasn’t.
I agree with all you say about the targeting. I can assure you that the campaign is definitely targetting efforts. I would say that most folks who are over 60 are inclined to vote Lieberman - they remember the Old Joe and they’re going to stick with him.
I think the Lamont campaign should ask Carter to campaign for him. Even my Republican mother-in-law was moved by Carter at the Dem convention and decided to vote for Kerry (which was huge).
But I think the past week the campaign has gotten it’s old fire back. Lieberman is vicious and is no more a Dem than Dick Cheney is.
me to me -
they did NOTHING. ZIP. Why on earth has nobody seized on this unarguable fact - biggest question of my lifetime. Condi fucking Rice not only kept her job but got fucking promoted.
Yay.
Hi pups, had a dream two nights ago that a bunch of us were doing a protest event involving large signs, costumes and many random bumper stickers about dumping this entire admin and Congress. I went into a trailer to change my costume and when I came out, there were suddenly bleachers full of a military band, a bunch of generals and others in uniform and suits. Nobody recognizable, but clearly Government types. We totally ignored them and went on with our protest. Even though I only know a few faces, my mind gave faces to many of my “old friends” here.
It was fascinating.

Ghostman — I agree with your basic insight. The votes that need to move are not Republicans, and only a few Indies, but instead the remaining Dems who support Lieberman. Who are they, and why are they staying with Lieberman? According to polls, Lieberman still has support from over 30 percent of Dems. My speculation:
Jewish voters are very proud of Lieberman — but I understand they make up less than 5 percent of the electorate. Little to be gained there.
But there is a larger group of folks who are highly supportive of Israel. To move some of these folks, I think Lamont needs to sharpen the argument that Bush/Lieberman policies have endangered Israeli security. The war against Hezbolla in Lebanon provided the evidence for this argument.
There are those who may disagree with deadlines for withdrawal from Iraq, even though they are concerned about the war. The argument to be made to them is that the Bush/Lieberman rhetoric could recklessly lead to war with Iran, and that would make things even worse for US forces in iraq, US interests in the ME, and for Israel.
There are older voters concerned about Social Security. More could be done to highlight Lieberman’s playing with Bush’s privatization effort.
Finally, Lamont is already hammering on Lieberman’s lack of judgment and integrity — being wrong on the war and consistently abandoning Democratic principles to enable Bush policies that undermine those principles. I think Lamont is doing this well, so the emphasis should be on the other areas above. Just a guess. But something more than what he’s doing overall is still needed, IMO.
I like the sharper attacks of the last week or so, re the NIE, the detainee bill, torture. And the constant bad news re Iraq all amplifies his messages.
dab from Ct: well, good! If the Lamont folks are indeed targeting, then some positive results should show up. Perhaps you ought to tell the campaign about the Carter angle….every little bit helps! And, I hear what you’re saying about the senior citizens….but there must be some way to chip into that base as well. I just don’t know how. Carry on the good fight up there!

zenn - I think all kinds of honorable military people are going to be right beside us in the US gulags
ljt @ 76
I don’t want Hastert to resign. I want him to lose. I want there to be mass Republican unemployment. I want there to be 3 unemployed pols for every one cushy lobbying gig.
I want Hastert’s grotesque balloon-head to be the public face of the Republican party for the next month. I want Hastert, bleeding from all orifices, to lead them off the cliff in November. I want him to be their big blubbery anchor.
That said, I did bet a guy at work a dollar that Hastert resigns on Friday.
Anyone got a link to the Scarborough video claiming there’s going to be an out-a-thon next week?
Jon Stewart nails holyfoleygate.
Is it just me, or does anyone else think that the republicans are sticking knives in each other’s backs because the cartel is cracking. I mean, what if Fordam is saying all that stuff about Hastert just to stick a knife in his back. Fordam was forced out of the inner circle of thugs, and so he says “Fuck it” and plants one in Hastert’s back. Hastert may have been telling the truth, but he was caught flatfooted. Before, Hastert had a chance of survival, now he is DOA. Everyone dies. This is political Shakespeare at its best.
This sinking boat is going to have a bunch of fighting and back-stabbing over the next few days. If we are lucky, this political infighting will spill over to the white house, and ripple all the way down the fascist wavelength til it does the San Andres. It will be known in the history books as “The Rupture.” A beauty to behold.
Maybe then, democracy will have a chance.

Gosh! How’d you know??
Lamont won the primary but he didn’t win the Democratic Party. The truth is Reid, Schumer, and many other DINOs feel more comfortable with Lieberman. Sure he’s a backstabber but down deep he’s really been just as supine as they have been and still are (just look at Iraq or their cave-in on torture and kangaroo courts). Hillary sent a check but that was not her heart but the triangulation talking. And Big Dawg doing his Big Dawg thing? Making amends for his earlier support of Joe that gave Joe enough of a boost to contemplate an independent run? Dream on. If Chris Wallace hadn’t opened his mouth and stuck his foot in it, that Dawg would have never barked.
Put simply Lamont won the primary despite the Establishment Democrats. If he wins the general election it will be the same way. They will not lift a finger to help him in anything but a symbolic way and probably not even that. I have said it a million times here: the Republicans may be criminal but it is important to remember that the Establishment Democrats are feckless.
For instance, punaise, my “arrrgh’s” are a gauge of my appreciation of the pun. The ultimate successful pun as described by Spider Robinson is when your auditors hold their noses and flee the thread.
The problem with these polls is CT seems to be that while the majority of Republican voters have moved to vote for Lieberman.. you still have a significant minority of Democratic voters willing to vote for Joe. That somehow needs to be turned around.
Independents are a different matter, but without your own base firmly backing you, you’re handicapped in 2 areas, not 1.
egregious @ 101

Hugh, the very same thing happened to Webb. None, not one, of the big dems would be campaigning with him if Allen hadn’t outed himself as the racist pig that he has always been.
Webb walked alone with his own believers for a long, long time. Too long, imho. Both he and Lamont were so unsupported by the establishment that I cut off funding to the “establishment” solicitors long ago.
They did not listen to the people.
Wait and see is not a strategy for winning.
