Oh, god, it's Katherine Harris. She's baaaaaack. And here's what she has to say about Foleygate:
"The media are being quite disingenous to make it a partisan issue. If anything, the Republicans didn't know about these issues and we're going to be very anxious to find out who in the media and on the other side of the aisle knew this and kept it from the public interest as our children were at stake…"
Uh, do what?
Okay, so in the pantheon of lying Reich Wing flacks, it appears that Drudge was dispatched to blame the victims, Ben Stein was called out (It must be a serious political emergency when Karl Rove's office is asking F-list Mtv game show hosts to carry water for the RNC. I mean, who's next? Jenny McCarthy?) to blame the gays, Sean Hannity is (of course!) blaming President Clinton, and Katherine Harris is blaming, well, who, exactly? The media? The Democrats? Oh, and of course, Foley himself is blaming a combination of alcohol and the priest who molested him when he was a teen.
The fact is that this is a Republican scandal, made by Republicans, perpetrated on Republican Youth, covered up and hidden by, yes, Republicans. They have no one to blame on this but themselves.
So, what do you suppose is next? Rush Limbaugh will blame the ACLU? Ann Coulter will viciously attack the mothers of the pages for giving birth to them? ("Never before have I seen women enjoy their childrens' molestation so much!! They're just playing to the GRIEFARAZZI!!") Michelle MalKKKin will blame a couple of Arab guys found carrying cell phones in their pockets, Atlas Pam will blame "duh MOOSE-lums", and Joe Lieberman will blame Ned Lamont and his supporters. Oh, and John Mark Karr, in an attempt to avoid extradition back to Thailand will blame himself.
It is the Reich Wing Culture of Denial that is to blame here. It's as I said last night, in an environment where secrecy and repression are the law, predators flourish and thrive, escaping detection because nobody wants to admit that there is a problem. The victims are too ashamed to talk about what happened to them. Parents hush it up rather than risk the embarrassment. And then the cycle repeats itself.
If anything good can possibly come out of all this, I hope it is that people will be less afraid to speak openly about the topic of sexual predators who prey on children. As it stands, it took the pages themselves coming forward with their allegations, and one particularly sick rightard blogger is now threatening to "out" the personal information of the original whiste-blower. (This was a front-page story on HuffPo, but it looks like they scrubbed it, probably to preserve the page's privacy.)
There's a lot more I want to say about this, but frankly, my outrage and disgust are becoming such that I need to take a break and walk around outside. We all know who is to blame here. Let's not lose sight of that as the Reich Wing furiously tries to push back by mis-characterizing the victims, the perpetrators, the House members who covered it up, and those of us who are writing about it.
Never defend.
Never explain.
ATTACK!! ATTACK!! ATTAAAAAAAAAAACK!!!!

Late Nitez! TREX!
Katherine Harris! I’m not surprised she’s speaking out on this Foley thing. She’s finally found someone in Florida with lower poll numbers than her…
Well done, TRex.
scarecrow @ 3
Thank you, kind sir.
Bet this wasn’t the October surprise Karl wanted…
Shadenfreude is the word of the week, eh?

Excellent insight, TRex. So much truth there.
Ah TRex, you went and hauled out the Pink Sugar for us to feast on!!
Hope that Starbucks triple venti, no fat, no foam, is extra hot, baby.
epu’d– Andy Stern on Colbert!
I wonder how many women in Congress have breast implants.
Don’t forget the libruls. They tolerated all this sexual stuff, and as Tony Perkins told us on Hardball, last night, “the next thing you know, we’ve got Congressmen chasing pages around the halls of Congress.”
I voted for a librul once, so I guess I’m to blame. Except she didn’t win.
Did anyone see Pat Buchanan on Chris Matthews? He claimed that gays were only 3% of the population (false by all realistic estimates), and yet 36% of all gays were pedophiles (statistic pulled conveniently out of his ass I’m sure).
Have to give Tweety props though, he called him on that crap.
TRex !
Kurt @ 12
It’s about time people started calling these hateful lying freaks out.
Dennis Hastert has to resign. John Boehner, who slings blame at anyone but himself, should resign.
Um, was Ben Stein a little drinky drinky when he wrote that. Who pulls the, “I have friends…” arguements anymore? I think he woke up this morning and looked back on what could only be described as drunk typing.
Evidently Abu Gonzales got caught with no one to blame this morning.
That might explain why he looked to be in a wide eyed scared sweat on camera this morning.
I agree that a good outcome would be for people to be able to talk more openly about sexual predators. I want to point out the obvious: people are aware. Responsible organizations, churches, and schools, all have policies regarding protecting children. Sure, awful things still happen, but it’s not as if everyone has their head in the sand about this issue. It’s precisely the widespread acknowledgement how important this is that makes the Republican leadership’s response to information about Rep. Foley so irresponsible.
Parents who are concerned about their children should inquire about ways churches, schools and organizations plan to protect their children. Most of the time I suspect you’ll get good answers. If not, work to make sure there are good plans put in place; there are many good examples to guide organizations.
Nicely done, TRex.
Muzzy @ 18
He always fucking looks like that, prissy little weasel.
Ted @ 17
I don’t think Ben Stein has any friends. There are probably some people who find him useful.
Kurt @ 12
I think what he said was worse, as I heard it: Buchanan claimed that gays = only 3 percent of the population, but they account for 30plus percent of the pedophile cases. At least Matthews challenged the validity of his numbers, and other panelist ??? just sat there dumbfounded.
Hey Trex, you nail it with the righteous truth, creative snark the intensifier (as always). You are a sauring genius, a treasure.
Katherine Harris: You’ll be my BFF Marky! Hugs and smooches!
Mark Foley: Bleechhhhh….get her off of me, somebody get her off of me! I’m gonna hurl!
Oh lawdy, where’s a priest when you need one.
Jeffrey Feldman @

Yeah, but not by much.
Your so-called outrage is lame and not believable.
Uh, Ken, I don’t think you know enough about my situation to say anything about the state of my emotions on this issue. Some people here know why this topic burns particularly close to the surface for me. You clearly do not.
SO FUCK OFF.
I called the RNCC this afternoon and asked them if Tom Reynolds used friends’ kids at his press conference. The young woman on the phone anwered, “Yes”. I then asked her, “But isn’t it true he really rented out a daycare center as a prop?” She responded, “uhhhh, maybe, I don’t know.”
These Repugs can’t even get their stories straight. Why isn’t Rove, the master strategist, doing his job?
Actually, Rush blames the Democrats because they obviously asked these pages to ‘titillate’ Foley. I am not making this up:
Hey, what about Charles Darwin – I’m sure the teaching of evolution in schools can be factored in here somehow…. Discovery Institute…come on down
@home nursing a sick kitty (they knocked him out at the vet today, trying to figure out why he won’t eat), LNFDL is a great way to spend the evening, as always… time to turn on the tivo and get me some Keith O.
George @ 10
I wonder how many breasts in Congress have women implants.
Mods, it looks like “ken” here is a troll. Would someone take him out behind the barn and shoot him? I have to clear out of here so I can get home from work.
karen allen @ 16
And Bill Clinton, Mel Reynolds, Barney Frank should all be aplauded right Karen
scarecrow:
Yeah it was some stupid out of thin air statistic, I probably screwed up the nuance hehe.
Clean up: aisle Ken.
Hi TRex — thanks for calling out the wicked witch of the South on her outrageous comments. {{{hugs}}} to you for this and more…
Hi ken-doll, are you just visiting for a bit? Because if you are, you may just want to pay close attention before jumping into the honest and clean waters of the lake.
Ken, you are a horse’s ass.
Ban that little worm or let me have a swing at the troll.

(((TRex))))
Chris Mathews was ok – though sorta into the “all of us insiders know lots of closet gays” line but he said they were as “straightlaced” as the straights. He later went after Pat about this again on the second hour he did.
And Nancy Grace asked “why isn’t Foley in jail?” in her best outrage voice so I think she’s looking for some love from Trex!
In the spirit of going on the attack – I have an idear for Darkblack and the other photoshopping artists out there.
I would like to see pictures of Hastert, Reynolds, Boehner et al with ‘MaF54′ stamped on their lapel, hat, shirt, etc. Everyone knows MaF54 now, so the connection in the public’s mind upon sight of the image is instantaneous and memorable.
MaF54 – let’s literally stamp it all over the enablers and conspirators in the GOP who helped Foley to keep his slimey behavior hidden from the public.
Maf54 equals GOP
The way I see it these three have got to be held accountable via the big boot.
Hastert Boehner Reynolds
who else?
I don’t think that blame the victims nonsense is going to go anywhere. Rush and Drudge are sawing off the limb they’re sitting on, and some of the most conservative wingers are going to sit back and watch. People are parents, and sisters, and uncles before they are Republicans or Democrats. What has happened is totally inexcusable, beginning with what Foley did, but including the lack of response from Hastert & Co. and the FBI, which has been sitting on this since July and is just now starting an investigation. You don’t have to be a partisan for this to make you really angry.
TRex, I especially appreciate your last three lines. I have been increasingly helping with some drafting for a candidate, and when someone writes something that is a little too nice or indirect, or that contains an apology, I quote T-Rex. Then I take all the nice stuff out.
Attaaaaack!!!!
Glad to hear John Walsh on Larry King say in response to Larry’s question whether Walsh knew Foley was gay(paraphrase): This isn’t about Foley being gay, it’s about him being a pedophile.
Which is the problem for the House leadership. In that they view all gays as child molesters, they probably thought (?) they WERE being politically correct by tolerating Foley’s predation, or gayness (same thing, to these guys). Look at Hastert, with his redface and his old-man aviators, shaking his head saying, “I knew, I didn’t know, he told me, no one told me, well maybe he told me but I don’t remember….”
Clearly, he’s in a stew he doesn’t understand — folks have been telling him to be polite to the caterer-gays who show up at political events, and to the Hill-staffer gays, and to the Log Cabin Republican gays. He was just being “nice” to Foley, like everyone told him to be. Now he’s being asked to make a distinction without (to him) a difference, between a gay and a child predator.
Heckuva job, Denny.

What the schools teach about sex and the plans they have to make the schools safe are separate things. The mandatory background tests are not the end of it. Schools and other organizations generally have procedure in place to investigate questions of impropriety. They well should.
Liberals control the schools?? Part of the American public school system are local school boards. My impression is these tend to skew conservative, at least in the monetary conservative meaning.
My basic point is that people should take an active interest in the welfare of kids and there are real ways we can do so.
Well, even though the Republicans have only themselves to blame, they’re working overtime to find somebody – shoot, ANYBODY – else to drop this stinky diaper on. The Wurlitzer sounds like it’s cranked up to like 11 or 12.
Krazy Katherine Harris tried desparately to get Foley to endorse her this summer. But alas he did not. Silver linings, Krazy Katherine, silver linings! Be thankful he didn’t endorse you.
And be thankful nobody gives a shit what you say anymore. ‘Cause it’s embarrassingly easy to yank all the gooey Foley kissey-uppy suckupage you did a mere month ago, right off the Sarasota Herald Tribune’s web archive.

Maybe it’s time for Cheney to shoot an old man in the face again to divert attention from Foleygate, lol.

Buchanan is very strange. When he writes about the war and how we got into it, he seems pretty cogent. He’s cogent almost 50% of the time when he talks about economics. But when he talks about social issues, I wonder what planet he was born on.
Scarecrow – I think the Nancy Grace Trex thing is a whole new version of Daou’s triangle!
TRex:
Particularly the “covered up” part seems crucial to me. It is not enough to throw Dennis Hastert under the bus when the whole Republican elite was in this together.
The MSM has a great story with the scandal per se, but it is up to the blogosphere to spotlight the complete cover-up story behind this.
Just as Watergate went much deeper than the burglars, this story is deeper than Foley or Dennis Hastert. It involves the whole culture of Republican governance. The Republicans want to do damage control by hiding Foley in a scientology dry-out camp and throwing Dennis under the bus. We should not let them get away with that.
Yeah, I always suspected Nancy Grace was after TRex. But who can resist him?

I just cannot fathom the moral bankruptcy of these people. What I’ve heard from Drudge, and Limbaugh, and now that harpy Harris (appologies to harpies everywhere…) they simply have no ability to reflect…do they really not understand what they’ve done? Or is it a conscious decision? Can there be that many morally deficient people running around? And how did they get control of our government?

Mel Reynolds and Foley (apparently) both assaulted children under the legal age of consent.
The issue wrt Hastert, Boehner, and Tom Reynods is criminal negligence in the workplace, enabling sex with underage victims. Since you missed that, are you a Roman Catholic Bishop?

Fox news is identifying Foley as a democrat on tonights newscast. Of course only a willfully ignorant hillbilly would believe that…oh wait, thats the majority of Americans. Its kinda fun watching a empire crumble.
Something here stinks… Ross of ABC claims his sources were republican not Dems as Hastert has attempted to assert. For Dems, this would be a rovian aping that goes beyond their abilities. Remember Sista Soldja and how surprised we all were that a Dem could b so machivellian?
OK, who would be interested in “poll”uting the GOP waters? Perhaps someone who’s really interested in preserving his non-existent reputation by being able to blame it’s decline and fall on a sex scandal.

Where the blame game ends, the real moral squalor begins…
There’s a deep sadness here — layers upon layers upon layers of meaning in this iconic Buffalo News photo that perfectly sums up and symbolizes the whole damn Foleygate scandal, which has rapidly moved beyond the “merely” sleazy, salacious and corrupt. Now it’s an utterly surreal, blame-shifting mass abdication of all personal responsibility. BW photograph of a truly shameless moment.
Above all, there’s the deep, visible moral rot that anyone can see. Look at the children in the photo. Look at the man (Rep. Reynolds) at the microphone. See the face of a party that uses children to score “family values” points but doesn’t give a damn. At all.
TeddySanFran @

Okay, I disagree with you here. I think just about everyone on Capitol Hill–even someone as dense as Hastert–knows that “gay” does not equal “child molester”. I don’t think any of them really believe that. They may spew that crap to their base, but when they need someone to run the Republican party, they’re perfectly happy with a gay man. Ditto for their office staff. And that’s why they’re in trouble right now. Everyone knew Foley was gay. Now they’re stuck trying to explain why they didn’t draw the “obvious” conclusion that he was also a child molester. They painted themselves into a nice little corner here. Now we’re four days into the scandal, and they have no idea how to get themselves out of it. They can hide Ken Mehlman for as long as they want, but eventually someone’s going to ask him, “Are you gay or a child molester?”

PULLING UP A RADISH !
Let me see if I can summarize the current state of spin on this:
1. Foley is only a sexual predator on young boys because a priest molested him once.
2. Foley is only a child molester because he has an alcohol problem, and alcohol makes everyone gay child predators.
3. A Democrat did it too, 23 years ago once.
4. Foley is really a Democrat! (per Fox).
5. Foley likes to molest boys, because Foley is gay, and 36% of gay people molest all kids (or something else incoherent said by Buchanan hehe).
Did I miss anything? :)

US House of Representatives (R-IL)
Dear Rep. Shimkus,
Take a deep breath and relax. I know things look bad for you now, but it’s going to be okay. You just have to remember that even though you procured pages for Mark Foley after you were warned of his predatory nature, Speaker Hastert was okay with it.
Indeed, the Speaker, after discussing Foley’s page problem with you, Rep. Reynolds, Majority Leader Boehner and former House Clerk Jeff Trandahl, declared “Mission Accomplished” on the PR front. That’s why the Speaker and the Majority Leader didn’t lift a finger to stop you from holding a slave auction where eager young pages could bid for dream date with Foley. The House Republican Caucus had already “turned the corner” in its battle to suppress negative news about one of its members.
You have nothing to worry about. You were only doing your job as Chair of the Page Board, ensuring that the pages serviced every Republican member’s needs. You did it well. Your friends in the caucus will remember that.
Heterosexually yours,
Gen. JC Christian, patriot
Pedophile
Pedophilia or paedophilia (see spelling differences) is the paraphilia of being sexually attracted primarily or exclusively to prepubescent or peripubescent children.
The evidence right now is that Foley is a child molestor, not a pedophile.

You forgot about the Democratic conspiracy to bring this up right at election time. They tricked the Republicans into covering all of this up until now.

Frank Probst @ 100
I would have said the same for Tom Cruise and for Scientology in general. It didn’t stop ‘em, did it?
TRex – another wonderful piece – beautifully written and heartfelt – with just the right amount of snark thrown in.
I think those who say people are parents and grandparents first before they are Dems or Republicans are right.
There was a pedophile threat in my neighborhood and the police and the community took it very seriously. We had a neighborhood meeting and the police explained the situation and talked about how to keep our children safe.
What I found completely chilling was one officer’s statement – “At least you know who your neighborhood pedophile is” They also said they wouldn’t let their kids ride bikes alone to the playground, etc. (this was in Montgomery County, MD – a fairly affluent community)
Pedophiles seek out situations where they can be around children. They usually try to prey on the most vulnerable.
And they are always also unrepentant. Usually, they blame it on the child, for being seductive (sound familiar?) [I’m sure mental health professionals were interested in what Drudge had to say - hmmmm.]
At the meeting was a doctor from Johns Hopkins Hospital (where they have a highly regarded treatment program for pedophiles) who told us that while their program has had some success – once a pedophile, always a pedophile. Just ask the Catholic Church about lives ruined and lessons learned.
The Republican leadership is responsible for allowing this to continue for years. And they are doubly wrong for covering up and then trying to blame everyone but themselves.
And these idiots are supposed to be the strong daddies? Talk about dysfunction…

John Casper @93:
Point taken – by any stretch Foley’s behavior was simply inappropriate. What I wrote above still holds true, however, in that the public are still being talked into this idea that gay=inappropriate behavior towards children = pedophile.
As you state, pedophiles are interested in children, perhaps they have a preference for one sex over the other, but a preference for victims of the same sex doesn’t make them “gay.” The problem is that many people tend to make very different judgements about men who have sex with underage boys from those who have sex with underage girls.

The “Take Ben Stein’s Money” op-ed I never thought I’d ever hear.

Was labelling Foley as a ‘D’ someone at FOX’s idea of a joke or do they really think of their audience as total morons? Surprising that they haven’t just started labelling bush as ‘imperial leader’ if they’re going to go that route.

I’m sorry…was that a rhetorical question?
gbear @ 133
Blogwatch has a screen capture of him logged onto his AIM account.
What’s worst in the public imagination: male-male, male-female, female-male, or female-female pederasty, pedophilia, or ephebophilia? I’m confused and tired of perverts, so I don’t know the answer, but I bet the other side of the aisle gets hit with a ton of something worse closer to the election.
Too bad this came out while the Pugs still have time to defend themselves and respond to it with something bigger. Illicit predatory sex has always been the #1 attention-grabber in this country since the Mayflower landed, and there’s nothing better to take the mind off Iraq than to have Hester Prynne and promiscuous page-boys running loose in the capitol, and the press roasting up more branding irons.

AZ Matt @ 123
The poster is incredible, but so is the comment. I particularly like his observation about the shifting standards of morality that allow the Christian right to justify torture, while emulating the “moral relativism” they have always accused the “secular left” of relying on.
egregious @ 124
You assumed I used the term ‘hillbilly’ as a perjorative. Why is that? I did mean it that way, but the fact that I didn’t have to put the word stupid or idiotic before the word and you still understood it to be an insult speaks volumes doesn’t it. Explain how the use of the word in and of itself is an insult.
Tweety was on the teevee at my dentist’s office today–he hosted a little “debate” between Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN).
It was interesting that Schultz agreed with Blackburn that “this is not a partisan issue, it’s about parents!” Tweety actually corrected them both, noting that the GOP controls the Congress, so of course it’s partisan.
Unfortunately, this segment preceded a spew of bilge from Professional Heterosexual Tony Perkins (of the Penis Research Council, IIRC). Tony-Tone-Toni cited non-existent “statistics” that homosexuals are more likely to be pedophiles than are heterosexuals. Liar.
When I check Patriotboy’s website the other day he had up a black page with United States of America, 1776-2006. It was as if he was clsing shop.
He has written a piece that moves me. For those eho haven’t yet read it is are the first few paragraph:
A few last words from my Inner Frenchman
The memorial to the United States I posted yesterday caused a few people to wonder if I’d given up. They were wrong. I was merely doing what I do every day here, expressing the way I felt about the day’s events.
Although I expected we’d lose the fight in the Senate, the final result nonetheless brought tears to my eyes. I had witnessed the death of the nation I loved, or more specifically, the murder of a set of ideals, upon which a nation was structured. I felt a need to memorialize that loss.
I target patriotism almost daily with my satire, but it’s not a love for country I mock, rather it is the simple-minded nationalism of the right; a patriotism that values symbols over substance; a patriotism that drives legislators who angrily acted to ban flag burning to pass a law gutting our Bill of Rights.
The basic values I love most, the ideals that made me proud to be an American, due process, habeas corpus, the proscriptions against cruel and unusual punishment and the use of coercion to compel confession were destroyed in the name of that kind of patriotism yesterday. Our America, liberal America, died with those ideals.
That’s why I mourned.
But today is a new day, a day in which I hope we will all resolve to fight harder than ever to bring our America back. The first step is to retake Congress and the Senate from the tyrants and cowards who committed yesterday’s crimes. That means doing everything we can to ensure that the Democrats win in November.
Renee — I feel horrible for Ohioans, that Blackwell and his minions are complete freaks.
Although DeVos and his dominionist crap here in Michigan is pretty nasty, too. But the DeVos freaks don’t have the massive persecution complex that Blackwell, Parsley et al have, so much less scary.
Hang in there, Renee, hope this Foley biz cuts into the “faithful” at GOTV.
AZ Matt at 9:28 pm
I’m a big General fan and he has been at FDL as a guest poster on occasion. I’m afraid in this early phase of the story surfacing, someone in Rove’s office will get a hold of this, a contest where pages “bid” money for a lunch with Foley, and use it to blame the victims. I think in a later phase, as the public and prosecutors understand better how many Republicans knew exactly what was happening, that this same story will illustrate how completely fucked up, Shimkus is/was. Knowing what Shimkus knew and allowing this “auction” to go on is beyond belief. I think it’s very possible that this “auction” was “reimbursement” to Foley for hitting some fund raising goals the leadership requested. Anecdotal reporting in the TM is that all the pages “knew” about Foley. The “auction” may have been the results of a negotiation between the House leadership and Foley. The “auction” is a powerful and very public statement by Shimkus and the Republicans to the pages (who afterall are House employees) that Foley was “safe” From Foley’s point of view, the auction is a huge statement by the leadership that he can be trusted by the employees he covets. It “opens the door” not only to the page who won the auction, but to all the others too.
I have zero evidence of this, but I think with the Abramoff scandal cutting off a lot of their money, they were willing to try anything to drive fundraising.
Anybody see this at http://www.waynemadsenreport.com/ Thoughts?
“October 3, 2006 — WMR has learned from informed sources in the Justice Department that the salacious e-mails from Rep. Mark Foley were leaked to ABC News by career Justice Department prosecutors and FBI agents who are incensed that Attorneys General John Ashcroft and Alberto Gonzales covered up the House page scandal for political reasons. The back story of Pagegate is that there was a criminal conspiracy by the top political leadership of the Justice Department to cover up the predatory activities of Foley and other GOP members of Congress since at least 2003 and, likely, as early as 2001.”

John Casper @ 143
With this bunch of GOONs(Guardians of Our Nation) anything is possible. If I were someone whose ancestor came over on a slave ship I would some problems with an auction of this type. This kind of thing went out of high schools and colleges long ago for the most part. Branding fraternity brothers, unless you are George, is kind of frowned upon also.
TRex @ 150

Jeb knew?!?!
If Gonzales is part of the coverup, then that does, incidentally, add weight to my Lieberman post earlier. Lieberman practically shined Abu’s shoes.
Ardant @ 145
But wait, there’s more! From the post above the one you cite:
Hmmmm. Does anybody think that covering for a child molestor could put a crimp in Jeb’s plans to redecorate the Oval Office?
Well, if those reports hold up. . .
I take WMR with a bucket of salt, but this week, who knows what’s what. . .
Eureka Springs–
I had an ancestor that left Breathitt Co KY for Arkansas in 1820, when very few people had yet settled in Breathitt, because it was “too crowded.”
So maybe we’re cousins :)

Given the dates noted by WMR, Gonzo would probably have been tipped off about this Congressional potential scandal with serious political overtones by DOJ while he was White House Counsel. Who else at the White House would have been told? Cheney? Rove?

I don’t know – however there’s more dirt on his site about Florida politics, a Foley coverup by Jeb, and the implications for the upcoming Governor’s race.
What a tangled web we weave…

Damn good Lieberman post, Pach.
FWIW, Wayne madsen was on Randi Rhodes today, apparently he had this story before ABC News did.
egregious – You bet yer sweet patoot I am!
I see many derogatory comments about hillbillys here and elsewhere. Honestly it doesn’t bother me when folks think we hillbillys are less than someone else. When needed it gives us an upper hand in many situations. It also keeps many a city folk out of my pristine back yard.
If true, these are mindblowing little bits of info. And it would be like early Christmas to know that another Bush’s chances of landing in the Oval Office were seriously downgraded. He is even more self-righteous than his brother the Preznit.
I’m still waiting for Lieberman to go on the Senate floor and denounce the immorality of the enabling/covering-up House “leadership” the way he did with President Clinton.
Pach #153, TRex — could be a partial explanation why Meredith Viera was interviewing Ashcroft this morning at 8:48 am EDT, during what is traditionally the fluffy soccer mom zone (no real news content after 8:00 am).
I guess I thought it might be to do damage control on the 9/11 stuff everging from Woodie’s “Denial” book, or a promo on Ashcroft’s book (but there was no real promo)…
But this bit puts the interview in a new light — wasn’t just a response, but a preemptive move to head off damage to Brand Ashcroft.
What a skeeze.
Oh, and John Mark Karr, in an attempt to avoid extradition back to Thailand will blame himself.
I was sooooo proud of that line and no one’s even lol’ed it.

dab from CT @ 163
Not very, to be honest. He jumps the gun a lot. And he often rants about homosexuals and child molesters (they seem to be the same to him) in government. But he does seem to get it right every now and then. And frankly, nothing he’s said about the Foley scandal has seemed very far-fetched.

Omigod. Dennis Miller needs to be put down.
Cannot believe that Jon Stewart wasted valuable time on this idiot.
Miller actually believes Bush is right there with hated-as-much-but-as-beneficial-as Lincoln and Truman.
Waste of pixels and bandwidth.
I am very skeptical of Madsen, but Bush’s support of Hastert imo makes more sense, if there is evidence that the Attorney General knew.
The problem I see is, if the AG knew, Hastert wouldn’t let Boehner and Reynolds finger him, unless Boehner and Reynolds, and the WH all know what Denny doesn’t, the AG knew. In this scenario, however, I would expect Bush to ask Hastert to resign, to protect the WH.

I think the inference of veterinary compassion in the above statement is apropos.
Rayne @ 187
I won’t go that far Rayne, but you make an excellent point. The timing sure adds weight to your theory and to Madsen’s as well, “S.3930, the last straw.”
What’s S.3930 for us non bill trackers (except following WRDA for my job)?
TRex @ 187
He had kids. I’ve seen it happen. Doesn’t always…but sometimes. One of my best friends went from believeing, as I did, that Iraq was about oil to believing Iraq was a terrorist state. Went from stoner musician to christian conservative who STILL supports Bush to this day. It all took place within a year of having a kid. We are no longer friends.
Talk about messed up — from Wednesday’s NYT’s:
Software Being Developed to Monitor Opinions of U.S.
A consortium of major universities, using Homeland Security Department money, is developing software that would let the government monitor negative opinions of the United States or its leaders in newspapers and other publications overseas.
Such a “sentiment analysis” is intended to identify potential threats to the nation, security officials said.
Rayne @ 185
Remember these are the people whose regular business is bringing down governments. So we’ll leave it in the hands of trained professionals, it’s much safer that way.
John Casper — the thing about Wayne Madsen is that he’s too far out for the average person to believe him, but that’s exactly what keeps him from being a statistic. I think some of his material is stretched or manipulated so that it partly resembles the truth, and might even be a way for certain persons to convey certain important points.
In re: Foley, I think the point Wayne makes is that somebody with inside access set this up. There’s another angle here, too, pure speculation of course: Big Dawg tells ABC that he won’t sue their f*cking *sses off if they make it up to him, and by the way, did they check out blogs for tips?
Heh.
TRex — hey, my last comment may not have come off the way I intended; I think we’re going to see for a while now a spate of “demon rum” and “perv” type excuses, as long as it works for Foley. Hope you caught that, apologies for not being more succinct.
What worries me right now is if this goes back to 1995 as WaPo says today, then we’re back under Big Dawg’s watch and they’ll find a way to twist this.
Rayne @ 184
Hmmm. Strangely persuasive.
Okay, we’re fairly far down in the thread now. It’s probably safe to talk about this. The whole Foley scandal has really driven home the fact that the 44 year old man who seduced me just like Foley when I was 14 was a predator. It wasn’t my fault. (Yes, I have actually been carrying that around for 24 years, that I solicited this kind of attention from an older man.)
I am going to try to write about this soon, but I have to tell you, having the media frenzy rake back and forth over this raw spot in my soul is WEARING ME THE FUCK OUT. I told my family on Monday along with some other people I trust.
I want to tell families what they need to watch out for. As much as there is a predator typology, there’s also a victim typology. It needs to be openly spoken about and dealt with.
But, GOD, in the meantime I feel so freaking tired and sad all the time. Jesus.
Dennis Miller must have an old head injury. He had an HBO special about a year ago and tried to be a right wing answer to George Carlton. sad
Don’t know if anyone’s come up with this bumper sticker yet:
Republicans *coddle* Pedophiles.
AZ Matt,
That is weird, ’cause I can tell you without writing a single line of code that they hate our fucking guts.
knuckledragger @ 195
It essentially made Bush a king by abolishing habeus corpus and retroactively pardoning past torture.
Bush can now put any U.S. citizen in jail, for any reason, for as long as he wants, without the right of appeal. Without habeus corpus, the rest of the Bill of Rights isn’t worth anything. As long as Justice Stevens is healthy, it probably won’t survive a SC challenge, but that is years away. In the meantime it overturns about a thousand years of precedent in Western Law. IANAL YMMV
AZ Matt @ 196
No, no, actually if the right people are creating that threat assessment software, it could be very beneficial to us. I hope it’s this company.

Thanks, TRex. I wouldn’t have thought to turn her on, ‘cept for your post the other night.
TRex @ 199
I’m sorry, TRex… but I think it’s healthy to bring it into the open (at least with family and close friends). And damn straight it wasn’t your fault. I don’t care what you might have done, it’s not the minor’s responsibility to make sure this kind of contact doesn’t happen. Even if you had initiated some kind of sexual contact with an adult (and I’m guessing that this isn’t what happened here), the adult is still responsible for stopping things in their tracks.
It’s a sad state of affairs when so many people have been sexually and psychologically abused by the adults they were entrusted to…
But that’s no excuse for continuing the cycle of violence and abuse. If anything, the victim should be especially sensitive to the kind of damage abuse causes, and thus LESS likely to exhibit these behaviors. *sigh*.
AZ Matt @

Its all happening. This is one of the reasons I hide my IP while surfing/posting at these blogs. While I kinda admire those of you who think this empire can be saved, I think history shows that we are too far gone now, we’ve done too much to too many people. There wasn’t a policy or leader that could have saved Rome in the 4th century and there isn’t a policy or leader that can save us in the 21st. Maybe our energies would be better spent on thinking of what comes after…
TRex if you need time off we’ll save the country until you get back, ok?

You know, I’m just glad it made me into a drug addict (now recovering) and a garden variety fuckup and not into a molester. Frankly, I can’t imagine any creature less sexually appealing than a teenage boy. So. Obnoxious.
TRex, You know we have you in our hearts and feel honored that you share your experience with us. We will all be able to grow (ok, many of us) from this experience because of what you bring to the conversation. We have your back!
Wow, TRex, I didn’t know (obviously) about when you were 14. The closest I ever came was when I was 12 or so and this guy kept oddly insisting that he give me a ride to where I was going. At the time, it didn’t strike me as odd, I just didn’t want the ride as I wasn’t going too far. Of course, looking back and judging by his aggression, there wouldn’t have been much of a “seduction” and probably something very much worse (not that any kind of molestation is at all acceptable). I was just lucky, I guess. I think you know that you weren’t to blame now, but I can’t imagine how something like that could damage a person. Stay strong and verbose, we need ‘ya and love ‘ya, bro.
Raoul
Thanks TRex.
FWIW
“It wasn’t my fault.” Yes, I think that’s what you for your own sake, have to keep reminding yourself of.
That’s why we have laws. At 14, with an adult, it’s not your fault.
More FWIW, your family, or some of them, may be working off their own legitimate guilt. Someone should have been looking out for you, that’s what families do. Since they, or some of them, failed, they may have a vested interest in keeping you thinking it was your fault. You can’t control whether they come to grips with their responsibilities or not.

Many years ago in the place where I currently live, a male teacher was arrested after molesting over many years more than 100 boys. That groups has grown up and I am told some have committed suicide. I have had a couple of former female friends who suffered the abuse of their fathers.
Trex, I can’t say I know what you went through but hearing the stories here and from the women I have known, it does take a strong person to deal with the abuse you suffered. We have never met but on these pages and you come across as someone who has the inner strenght to thrive. And from the comments posted here tonight you have many, many friends who care very much about you. In that respect you are a fortunate man. Love, AZ Matt
T-Rex, I was about to head to bed, but am glad I stayed for this. I just sat and stared at the screen for a while, like the time that Christy talked about being victimized. It’s amazing that we can put one foot in front of the other, keep going, love others, do good, own cats, and just keep breathing while weighed down with events like this.
I’ll be interested to hear what you think the victim typology is. I wonder if we all have a bit, but as we get older and tougher we have more tools to tell someone to back off. What makes child predators so unforgivable is the vulnerability of kids. I think that teenagers are more concerned about pleasing others than very young kids are, and their sense of who they are trails the body in maturing.
I only know you through your writing, but I would be proud if you were my friend. You are funny and insightful and fearless, and your writing is wonderful.
Hugs, TRex. It’s exhausting to deal with that kind of stress.

Elissa’s memorial service was on Sunday. Then this happened yesterday. In the midst of it all, I have completely lost my appetite. I keep trying to eat and everything tastes like glue and paper. Weight is falling off of me. I am one of those people who has to struggle to maintain a healthy weight. And everyone says, “Oh, I wish I had that problem!”, but they don’t know how haggard and sick you look and feel when your weight drops suddenly.
TRex — I really wish you could have been one of my peeps in school way back in the day, ‘cuz we could have compared notes about it, and I would have told you it wasn’t your fault way back then.
It was the same for so many girls, too, we could relate; I remember far too many of my girlfriends hunching and hiding their bodies because they believed they were “asking for it” by merely being young women, many of them tormented by experiences like the one you had, older persons trying to take advantage of them.
And of course it’s the same for so many young men; it’s not limited to gender, it’s about youth and power/powerlessness. How could it possibly be your fault? At that age you’re still wrestling with leaving childhood and just getting your head around being a man — it’s the last thing on a juvenile’s mind, really, until it’s forced on them. You were chosen in no small part because of your powerlessness, because it couldn’t be your fault.
What really concerns me is how common this is, and how many young men must have shared your experience, people that were our friends but never told us because they couldn’t. How do we ever make it up to you for not seeing it or being there?
I will tell you as a mother of a tweenager and a stepmother of a grown man there is NO way that you could be responsible; I can see the topic of sexuality and maturation and identity all shaping before my eyes as my child reaches her teen years. No matter how open I am with her and careful about explaining all of this to her, there will be events that will shape her that will not be positive, and she will have little control over them. I’ve explained all of this Foley situation with her, and still she will not recognize it when it sneaks up on her or her friends — and it will — and it will not ever be her fault. EVER.
Just as it was not your fault, EVER.
Keep talking, and definitely on your own terms, TRex. This is where you get to exercise the power you didn’t have then. We will be here for you, unconditionally.
TRex @ 242
You know where you need to come to. Just come on out here to the farm. We’ll feed you.
I bet we can find something up in here you’ll like.
karen allen @ 240
He was NOT a family member.
And he’s dead now. He drove his car into the woods and put a bullet through his head in 1988 right after I moved to Athens from my home town.
I feel curiously numb about knowing that.
TRex, I can’t think of anything witty to say, not that there is ANYTHING funny about it. My neice was abused at 13 by a neighbor, and all my in-laws (except her Mom, who got her therapy) told her to stop talking about it and “get over it”. My sister-in-law arranged for her to see the guy behind bars–the judge arranged it through one-way glass. When her father wanted the whole family to go to the bastard’s get-out-of-jail party (as a “Christian” gesture of forgiveness), her Mom threw him out and divorced him. I was proud of them both–mother and daughter.
Oh, TRex, I wasn’t implying he was a family member. Just musing.
punaise @ 239
I meant the real thing, outside of the toobzz. It takes a lot more work, and you have to persist over time. See: TRex posts on Little E. He knows how to do it.
bed time.
That the curiosities of the young can be used against them makes it no less a crime. In some ways it’s an even more egregious transgression.
Consider the rare, but not unknown cases where an attractive heterosexual woman seduces underage, but post-pubescent boys. Human nature and social conditioning provides plenty of willing participants, but it is still a crime, one that may have truly devestating effects on a kid who has not had a happy upbringing to that point. Confusing sex with affection, that never happens!
Or consider this analogy: many, but not all teenagers drink or are curious about alcohol. That in no way mitigates the act when an adult provides gives booze to kids, especially where sufficient quantity is provided for them to get drunk.
As far as my own upbringing, which occurred on a tobacco farm in North Carolina, I think of myself growing up as a Woody Allen character trapped in a Faulkner novel.
John Casper @ 236
SF Chronicle:
Mixed emotions on this one. For the sake of history, he should back off the record, but it’s so close he’s compelled to go for it. My guess is that with the All-Star Game in SF next year, they’ll bring him back. It will be at the expense of the rebuilding they desperately need.
TRex-
Know that you are not alone.
I think the “otherness” that characterizes gay youth is such a breeding ground for predation. I also think that the reason many do not reveal the abuse even years later is not to hear the smug summation of your life in “Oh, so that’s why you’re gay…” With lesbians, of course, its “That’s why you hate men…”
Open. Authentic. Out. Only way to live.
TRex @ 239
When was the last time one of them got sick? I’m still hurting from the nasty vet bill that’s only getting bigger! But they’re worth every penny.
This must be such a painful time, still deep in grief for Elissa and now ready to share another terrible thing with family and friends.
I do see kind of a connection, maybe your bond with Elissa has encouraged you to be more authentic and more sharing of your inner self.
We are here for you and love you.
Must sleep. Will be checking in on you tomorrow morning. (((((TRex)))))
I think of myself growing up as a Woody Allen character trapped in a Faulkner novel.
Snort! That notion has immense comic potential.
Oops. “Niece” I really do know how to spell.
We had a clean sweep. I’ve lived in this borough for 23 years and three days, and this has NEVER happened before.
Progressives and rational moderates won Mayor, three Borough Assembly seats and two School Board seats – the only issues on the ballot, BY WIDE MARGINS!
I can’t share with you pups and sauropods how happy I really am, but I’ll pass on what I can.
YEAH!!!
TRex,
Yes, I wonder what kind of family Sarah Silverman grew up in.
I forgot to mention – they outspent us by about 5 to 1…….
Ed*ard Teller @ 254
strong work, ET, congrats. may this be the leading edge of the sweep of 2006.
ET – Fantastic news, you worked hard for it, congratulations!
Ed*ard Teller @ 254
BOOYAH!! Hooray for the good guys!
And now I’m really going to sleep. You guys stay up and keep TRex company, ok?
ET — WOW. Clean sweep, and you folks cleaned out their piggy banks, too???
That is EXACTLY what the 50-State Strategy is supposed to do, you folks must have been doing it right! Hurray!!
OT for left coasters Frontline PBS on the taliban is worth catching if it’s not to late.
It’s so funny. Now that I have talked about what’s been bothering me, suddenly my appetite is back. I’m RAGINGLY hungry.
Just phoned in an order to the local 24 hour greasy spoon for two eggs scrambled, sausage, toast, and hash browns with onions and cheese.
It’ll be ready in ten minutes.
Eureka Springs,
Are they haggling prices with Sen. Frist? (He said we should negotiate a settlement with them and –wait for it, wait for it– cut and run!)
TRex,
Catharsis is a powerful remedy. And as much as I love Austin, there’s hardly anywhere to get food after 9:30 pm. Ah, city life!
What Eureka Springs said, catch that Frontline.
There is NO way that Bush was ever up to the job of the Presidency. The job requires grasping complexity and being able to think in color; the history of Afghanistan and Pakistan relations with the US is the perfect example of how complex the demands of the job are.
While Musharraf is not someone I can respect, I can certainly understand the man’s immense frustrations dealing with Bush and trying to keep Pakistan from looking like Iraq.
TRex:
I have a giant hug for you, because I know exactly what you’re talking about.
Hon, it isn’t your fault. I had one guy, 25, who tried to lure me into a very scary scene when I was 13. For a very long time, I blamed myself for that, because he was attractive, physically and personally, and I found his attention flattering. At first. I was also old enough to be sexually curious, but smart enough to know, when he put the move on me…something isn’t right. And I almost didn’t escape the scene without worse happening to me than did (I won’t go into more details than that removal of clothes did happen). I got out of there, somehow, and have never mentioned one whisper about it to anyone–until now.
It wasn’t my fault that someone preyed upon my innocence. It wasn’t your fault that someone preyed upon yours. We were young and inexperienced and messed up from our changing realities (and bodies). This is why it is so terribly wrong when adults approach children. They’re preying on vulnerabilities to satisfy their own sick and twisted desires. The vulnerabilities themselves are a turn-on for them, and that’s disgusting. We can’t help going through all that teen stuff. But they can help taking advantage of it for their own fulfillment. They’re the ones who are wrong and bad and evil. They’re the monsters. Not you. Not me.
That is what I learned, many, many years later. Too many, unfortunately.
TRex @ 264
That’s interesting, T. I had a dream last night that I was at a restaurant somewhere, and I had ordered ice cream, and then I saw them cooking breakfast food that looked just like what you described, and I cancelled my ice cream order and ate that instead. Hope you enjoy it!

Page Scandal Complicates Race For ‘Mr. Clout’
By Michael Powell
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, October 4, 2006
AMHERST, N.Y., Oct. 3 — Possessed of a pleasant smile and a sweet demeanor, 60-year-old Eleanore Klepser represents something of a nightmare for local Republicans.
She is a registered Republican and she has always — always — voted for her local congressman, Thomas M. Reynolds, a Republican. But she is following this scandal about the congressional pages, and she suspects Reynolds just might have covered up the actions of a fellow Republican congressman who sent suggestive e-mails to a teenager who had worked in the House.
Rep. Thomas M. Reynolds (R-N.Y.) is at risk because he knew of a lawmaker’s inappropriate contact with a page.
“Why didn’t he do more? That’s what I wonder,” Klepser said as she walked down a street in her well-heeled suburb northeast of Buffalo. “Was he paying close enough attention? Was he covering something up?
“These aren’t great questions to ask a month before an election.”
I think many voters will be wondering for many weeks to come.
TRex @ 261
A couple of milkshakes to top it off!!
AZ Matt,
Dear Eleanor will have fewer questions when she finds out that Foley’s PAC gave $100K to Reynolds’ campaign fund.
Hey TRex, I’m mostly a lurker around these parts but just wanted to thank you for all your fine writing and rapier-like snark – sauropods everywhere must be proud (and jealous). You’ve been through alot lately, but you keep delivering the goods and I appreciate it – you’ve been the bright spot in many of my darkest nights these last few months. Just wanted to let you know the lurkers love you too, and wish you the best (and your little koi too!!). Take care, and good night…
TRex — ah, don’t tell me you called the Waffle House…
Funny how one’s body says things that your mouth won’t, huh? Think it was Martha Beck who wrote about physical manifestations of non-physical challenges; sometimes they are very literal.
Like the chronic pain in my neck I had at a job with a boss who was…well, you can already tell.
Mangia. Enjoy. I’m heading off to bed, only 4 hours before I have to get up and get the boy read for school.
‘Niters, Pups!
Good night to all, and remember, it takes a campaign budget of millions to hold us back, NOT!
I worked and rehearsed in Anchorage too late to go to the local “Election Central” celebration. When I got home, I popped open the laptop and went to the borough home page. I DID NOT expect this. I’ve been conditioned to work and volunteer for people who lose to the juggernaut of developers and fungelicals.
AZ Matt @ 270
Oh, gosh, a milkshake would be gooooood.
*onderdog @ 272
Thanks, *onderdog. I have actually felt a little off my game lately, writing wise. So, thanks for easing my mind on that.
Off to pick up food.
Will check back in before bed.
TRex — ah, don’t tell me you called the Waffle House…
Worse.
Huddle House.
The even trashier version of Waffle House.
knuckledragger @ 269
That and the matter of his news conference with his protective wall of kids. He needs a big time out in that wonderful New York institution Sing Sing.
knuckledragger – They are hagglers alright. Probably one of the best things we could do is prepare to haggle for the next few thousand years and just enjoy the haggle. but noooo
TRex, At the risk of sounding a bit cliche’. You just let out an enormous amount of f****ng shi* that you have been carrying around for a long time. Don’t trip up on the myriad of emotional overflow right now, just let your new emotional jeans (paper denim) shrink to fit. Easier said than done, I know.
knuckledragger @ 264
Huh? I hardly know Austin, but I’ve been to quite a few late-night eateries there. What about Katz’s or Kerbey Lane Cafe or the Magnolia? Or are those no more? It’s been a while since I’ve been to Austin late at night…
Oh nuts, just realized I meant to comment on something upthread. Must scramble because a thunderstorm is starting.
RE: software analysis of opinions — kids, it’s already most of the way here, just needs a few more tweaks. Google Trends is a perfect example of that; dare you to compare trend of Mark Foley with Tom Mahoney, for example, and then compare the results to any other races, like Webb-Allen or Laesch-Hastert.
I’d gotten an email from my brokerage this evening about Google working on software to test the veracity of statements; they expect it in five years. I think I’d give it less time than that. Imagine being able to discern almost immediately based on internet data, without doing all the digging, whether a candidate was telling the truth.
Or an incumbent.
Go Google!!!
TRex — Huddle House? Oh lord, I hope you have Pepto in the cupboard, babe. Enjoy yourself, though.
I cannot wait up to hear how TRex liked his breakfast. I’m supposed to get stuff done tomorrow. Good night, folks.
Got this email earlier this evening. Good news from California.
McNerney 48%, Pombo 46%.
Despite over $500,000 in attack ads unleashed on Jerry McNerney over the last month, the voters of the 11th Congressional District are standing strong behind Jerry.
That’s the upshot of a public poll conducted by respected firm Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research, highlighted in an excerpt from a prominent article in this morning’s Stockton Record:
A bit of amplification on this before I get back to work on the uphill campaign for Diane Benson for Congress – who is going to WIN with or without direct support from my doggie friends, including Jane and Redd, who have NEVER answered a query re Benson.
This is one of the most RED areas in the USA. It just went rational and progressive like it has never done before – in our short history….
ET – aka scrappy *g*
punaisette just turned thirteen, turning a page (no pun intended, really) from child to young lady. like all parents of teens, for the next five-plus years we worry about, well, you know…. all you can do is keep the channels of communication open, try to instill a sense of skeptical situational awareness without veering into paranoia, and trust in their street smarts.
We figured out why the coverup- Hastert and the other Repub Leadership meant to have a face to face with Foley, but they just couldn’t all get on the same Page…. (no matter how much they tried to persuade him).
punaise @

punaise,
Yikes, a teenager! Congrats. My 17yo trotted off to bed ten minutes ago after giving me his newest well-presented version of his need for a new, bigger amplifier head.

And love love love love her. Tell her that your love is deep and unconditional and permanent. And that anyone who tells her they love and understand her more than her family is LYING.
These monsters prey on a kid’s sense of alienation from their families and friends. The best way to fight that is to make your kids feel more special than anyone else.
monkeys @ 286
resisting the urge to use the phrase “incumbent upon” ….
Trying to imagine a lil punaisette. hehe
Watch out Berkeley.
For some reason I’ve never figured out, the later it is the better greasy spoon food tastes. Alcohol may or may not enhance this effect. ;)
Trex, sweetie, with everything you’ve had going on, it’s no wonder you’ve been feeling out of sorts. {{big hugs}}
Eureka Springs, AR @ 291
LOL
TRex @ 289
good advice. we’re talking about a reasonably mature and well-adjusted kid, cognizant the world her older brother is experiencing, so the alienation thing doesn’t appear come into play…
anyone remember the movie Thirteen?
TheOtherWA @ 293
You guys have no idea how much good this blog does me on a daily basis. It is a daily source of hope and inspiration. Something to get out of bed for.
It’s like being in a band again, except without the smoke-choked claustrophobic practice space, the noise, the fighting, the hours wasted hanging out in bars, and having to drag my ass from town to town in a shitty van with four asshole straight guys whose feet stink.
In fact, without the band. But otherwise, it’s just like that.
I really want darkblack to do a photoshop of me and Christy and Jane and Pach as ABBA.
I despise Ben Stein and frequently write to Yahoo to complain that they feature his stupid articles on their Finance page.

Well, the Party of One being a subset of the GOP (Ghastly Old Prigs), I doubt you’ll hear any too much nattering from him on this subject.
punaise- sorry to interject stupid humor- the source being a serious discussion on “democracy now” – they didn’t catch their own pun…
but happy b-day to little punaisette- i remember na/hi when she was knee high (and haven’t really seen her since)… best wishes all around… (5-0, the giants win!)

heh heh, you sly ole former neighbor you….thanks for the wishes, I’ll pass them along.
Good night, my friends. Everyone sleep well. And parents, take this opportunity to discuss the topic of sexual predation with your kids. And then hug them tight and tell them how special they are to you.
g’night TRex….be well
“monkeys”? ’sup wit dat?
ET – Ok I will send a little support to Diane Benson upon your warm recommendation and her web site.
Just got radical chic & mau-mauing the flack catchers in the mail today. I may have read it years ago, just can’t be sure. Stocking up on winter books and looking over my house everyday in anticipation of your Alaskan eagles arrival for their winter stint.
I think montag recommended Second front by John Macarthur, anyway it arrived as well.
good night all
So what is it with Florida? “Some people say” that Mark Foley was talked about as Senate candidate instead of Katherine Hairass. I hear that Jebthro took a pass on that idea, since MaF54 got called out(of the closet) in his abortive 2004 Senate bid. lol
hey, Pach’s post got front-paged at HuffPo (scroll down on the left side, “featured posts”.
The Lawrence King/Boys Town Scandal from the Reagan/Bush1 era should be reopened for comparison purposes as well as the ultimate question: What is it with Republicans and pedophilia?
Google “Conspiracy of Silence” and watch the only remaining copy of the film that was banned by the RNC. The case was sandbagged by the FBI, Nebraska State Police, et al.
It is disgusting and the cover-up was classic RNC. Go watch it!
Today on Tweety’s first show (he had more than one today what with all the excitement in D.C.), when Patty Buchanan was bloviating about gays, Bob Schrum shot back at him, I’ll paraphrase, “oh yeah, like you have alot of credibility on gays, the guy whose keynote speech at the Republican National Convention lost the election for the first President Bush in 1992″. You should have seen the expression on Patty’s face!! He recoiled in a way that looked like somebody had bitch-slapped his fat jowls! Priceless!
TRex, now it’s really down on the thread, and you’ll probably not see this. Yes, I’m mostly a lurker here, but I’m with whomever has got your back on this.
There was a diary over at Kos about the Ms abortion petition. I burst out crying. I think that had something to do with the climate over this Foley issue. There are lots subjects people don’t talk about, and sometimes part of the reason is the discussions just get into a muddle.
Protecting kids is serious, but not something too lofty to even think about. Responsible people come up with ways to do so. I don’t work with kids, but I have. For all the shortcomings in our institutions, the issue of sexual predation is on the radar.
I feel very strongly that gay people–yay!–are important. Driving gay people undercover doesn’t help protect kids as much as some people may think so. That’s why attention must be drawn to the real ways to protect kids. Quite fundamental to any organization involving minors is having procedures for protecting kids ahead of time.
Parents should ask adults who are involved with their children about what steps are taken. Most teachers should be happy to say: they know what the laws are, have received training and know what are protocols in place–this is widely the case. Teachers and people who work with kids are overwhelmingly on the side of kids. So the idea of talking about the issue of adults who abuse kids sexually should be towards making larger communities of caring which include us.
Take your time in telling your story. It’s such a hard story to tell because it is yours and has bearing on too many others who have been abused. I hold you in very high esteem. It’s nasty out there in the public arena. I know this is going to be really, really hard. Don’t underestimate how good people can be either. There must be people who know you here, for whom you are the first openly gay person they’ve met. The distinction you are making between abuse and sexual orientation will be clear to most people–! All I can say is there are many people like me who you don’t know but are with you. Tell us how we can help.
Thanks for trustin us T-Rex
You have a lot of strength & a good brother who cares; enjoy your life
You`ll get better if you let yourself so take care

What an astute observation. Bush runs this country as if it was a giant fraternity. For instance the torture buill has its roots in frat hazing. What I find so incredible is that a frat character like Bush can hold this job for 6 years.

drifting off for the night. hasta manana.
TRex @ 199:
I feel for you, buddy. I am fortunate enough not to have been molested as a child, but this episode has been ringing the bells loudly for me too. The abuser in my case was (ironically) a therapist, who really took advantage of his position of trust and my emotional vulnerability at the time. I strongly suspect that, like Foley, he hid behind a do-gooder persona to cover up his own fucked-up-ness.
I made the decision not to report the bastard, because of the repercussions it could cause in my life. It was a twisted, complicated situation. But I’ve been thinking about how the pages kept it silent for so long, and have just today pretty much decided I’m going to report him.
And yes, this is far enough downthread that I feel safe posting too. It would mean a lot to me to know that you’re thinking good thoughts in my direction, that my family and I can get through this without too much more pain. You know I wish the best for you. If you want to chat, my email is firstname.lastname@google.com.
Raph L – you can be sure that TRex will see your post in the morning. thanks for summoning the courage to share your difficult story.
Oh T-Rex, sitting here weeping & trying not to drip on my keyboard (re post 191). What courage you have, and the inner strength that gave you the courage to post will certainly keep you unerringly pointed toward growth and healing.
You’re probably hitting raw spots with a lot of us lurker types. Thank God/dess I didn’t have that issue, but have seen the ramifications first hand in a sister, cousin, friends both male and female. And all of us who end up being royal fuck-ups covering up our pain and shame by self-medicating…I was just a garden-variety druggie-alky who avoided looking at my substance abuse by choosing men whose problems were much worse than mine, always easier to point at someone else’s problem!
In my young and skinny days I was sometimes accused of being anorexic or bulimic, which I was not. It was just that during times when I slid into deeper than usual depression i’d completely forget about eating. So when i made it thru treatment and into recovery, watching my weight became a mental health tool…too much weight loss? Time to call friends and work my program ‘cuz something was bothering me that i wasn’t looking at. Now i see post 262, hurrah, glad the appetite is back!
Well, sorry to blather on about myself so much, it’s just to let you know that a lot of us who usually remain silent can identify with your pain and also the courage that you display. Even tho we’ve not met physically, over the months i’ve been here, your writing has touched my heart as well as my funny-bone, and how could i not love dearly someone who speaks so eloquently to the goodness in humans. Not to mention being without peer when it comes to slice’n’dice time for idiots!
Hugs also to Ralph L and others who’ve shared painful experiences tonight. Keeping quiet harms ourselves, it is SO HARD to overcome that sense of shame, bravo and mucho hugs to all of you!
This is an amazing place – it is great to know it exists and to be able to participate in it. That it is a safe place for T-Rex (and others)to share such deep feelings I believe is what is the difference between us and the ReThugs: compassion.
I have never heard a sincerely compassionate word, nor seen a compassionate act by any of them. Here at the Lake there is little else.
It is good such a place exists.
TRex:
Dude, Goddess Bless you! You’re a large reptilian macher with a good heart.
Thanks all, I’ll check in tomorrow morning.
Oh, and my email address is gmail, not google, if anybody (other than spammers) wants to drop a line.
Hugs to all, and good night.
Find myself wide awake at 3 am (jet lag).
This Foley thing is big- is it big enough to tip the election? We’ve still got five weeks to go- which is a long time in poloitics. Goopers will want to get it all put to bed within the next week. If you are still seeing Foley headlines in two weeks- they’re fucked.
“…in an environment where secrecy and repression are the law, predators flourish and thrive, escaping detection because nobody wants to admit that there is a problem.”
Well said. Mark Foley is the “Citizen X” of the Republican Party. They knew of his proclivities, and did nothing. Ignore it and it will go away.
Blame the gays: what this does is allow the voters in his region to rally towards the ‘real’ Republican who will save the seat. Voters can then vote NOT to avenge the bad judgement by Foley and the Leadership, but they CAN avenge the injustice done to the GOP by this gay man! Very effective rallying cry to win the seat back. It is truly horrible to make the GOP into the wounded party rather than the parents of America, but that’s their plan.

I said the other night that you had emotional bravery. It’s not only brave of you to do this, it shows your goodness. This mess has raised demons from the past for many people. Your post will lead the way for others, and perhaps allow them to ease the burden of their memories. You are a shining light in these dark days.
May I add that a fourteen year old boy barely knows how to operate his own feet, let alone how to handle his sexuality.
Morning All, and Blessings for a day filled activism on a base of justice and peace for all. The goal seems within reach now, but we must keep our focus and good cheer and reach out to all those around us with whose help we can change the world.
I’m writing this while crying searing hot tears–for Trex and others who’ve shared their experiences of abuse. My own memories have been surfacing lately and this Foley/cover up has jogged more–My heart keeps surging with compassion for all of us and anger at all of THEM!! Those who “knew or should have known…” must be held accountable!!
These motherfuckers refuse to be held accountable for ANYTHING!!! I’m furious and sad and filled with so much tenderness for all of us who’ve suffered at the hands of sick, sick, sick, SICK people.
Hugs to everyone. Good will prevail. I’m a believer.
Just noticed that Frist is getting the shit kicked out of him for saying that the war in Afghanistan can’t be won militarily and that some political reconciliation with the Taliban may be necessary.
Sanest thing the fucker has ever said and he’s getting his head handed to him for saying it. Pundits have declared his presidential ambitions DOA.

I can’t help but thinki that this is just the tip of the iceberg. Victims, Moms, Dads, siblings, teachers, counselors, cops…who doesn’t HATE pedophiles? How can Republicans do anything but condemn this on every level without pissing off all but the sickest of the RapePublicans??
I think they’re going down in a blaze of putrid power grabbing GREED.
Praise be.
And a fine morning to you too, Old Sow! Thank you!
Just that far on the thread of comments above…GREAT NEWS ET on your local election!!
You know, this whole Foley mess is like a BIG dysfunctional family where abuse passes from generation to generation and no one ever talks about it. Sometimes even children being abused in the same household don’t speak of the horrors among themselves. So many messed up dynamics at work here,it’s hard to know where to begin.
If nothing else, this does give parents a good way to open this discussion with our kids.
I worry terribly about my son, almost 13,who is high functioning autistic. He’s so open and trusting and everyone is his friend. Many kids his age befriend him,but mostly it’s just to talk him into doing stuff he shouldn’t do(like disrupting class,or throwing a rock to break a window). It scares the hell outta me. I’m still trying to figure out how to talk with him about this so he’ll understand but not lose his open, friendly ways and be afraid of people. We’ve had that”good touch/bad touch”talk in the past, but honestly,I don’t think he understands.
He’s alot like a big, goofy, overly enthusiastic black lab puppy,as many boys this age are. He can be obnoxious one minute, and sweet the next. But he’s incredibly vulnerable, and sometimes it scares me to death that someone will prey on him.
TRex,try to be gentle with yourself. At 14,no child is so savvy that they can be”in charge”of a situation with an adult, especially where sex is concerned. The adult ALWAYS has a choice in what they’re doing.
I think that’s why child predators always, almost without fail, try to spin things away from that matter of choice. “I was drunk and have an alcohol problem”(repeat if it’s drugs of some sort),”I was molested as a child”,and in relating to the victim “You tempted me”,etc, etc. But there’s a concious choice an abuser makes to act,a fact that gets lost sometimes. If they didn’t think it was a bad choice, there would be no need for the hiding, the lying, the coersion, and the myriad excuses. They KNOW it’s wrong and do it anyway.
All this hiding, lying, and excuses allows the abuse to continue and lays the shame at the feet of victims. Our culture is very hypocritical in how we deal with sex and sexuality, and with so much repression and fear involved,I think that perpetuates abuse. Look at how afraid so many people are of simple sex ed classes in schools. We wouldn’t let our young people drive without knowing at least some of the basics of how a car works, but when it comes to sex,for some reason many people will fight tooth and nail for their child to remain ignorant. It’s so foolish and stupid, but beyond that, the ignorance and shame attached to sex is downright dangerous. One can teach kids about sex without sole focus on”the act”itself. “The act”is such a small part of the big picture anyway, imagine if along with the mechanics,we taught kids about the emotions that come with sex, relationships and respect, commitment and integrity. We could end up with a new generation of sexually healthy adults at some point.
This hit home for me this week too, brought back lots of things I thought were closed and dealt with. We need to share and talk about these things, perhaps that can be one good thing about this whole page scandal. I hope so.
Hi,
Do you think it would be a good idea to avoid the Foleygate tag?
Let’s find something that doesn’t diminish its significance by grouping it with other scandals and something that will remind people of the truly appalling nature of the scandal. Something with ‘republican, sex, predation and enabling’ would be good.
Any ideas?

Well, it’s still Frist being insane, but, what is absolutely uncharacteristic (of him or any of the other Bushbots) is the even brief willingness to consider options other than the current course.
Just about every faction in the country ultimately wants to gain control of the government, and the Taliban is no exception. It’s not that only the Taliban would take the mile, given the inch–virtually all of political powers there would. If the Taliban were to regain power again, that would greatly embolden the Islamists in Pakistan, and that could lead to a civil war there.
The country has been hopelessly fucked up for a long, long time, and even more so since we suckered the Soviets into invading. Installing a puppet government that then turned over people to the U.S. for torture and indefinite confinement didn’t win any hearts and minds, either. No security from either the warlords or the Taliban made a bad situation worse.
There was a chance early on when there was a general call within the country to bring back the exiled king (though very elderly, he was still quite popular among the non-aligned in the country) and return the loya jirga to its original function as a tribal council.
Had we protected the tribal leaders across the country from both the Taliban and the warlords–instead of paying the warlords and the Pakistanis bounties for the privilege of us getting rid of their enemies for them–the country might have been able to return to its pre-1970 status. Instead, because we have a bunch of control freaks in the White House who work for oil companies, the Afghans got a puppet who’s a virtual prisoner in his home and offices and has virtually no authority beyond those walls.
The Taliban are doing just what the mujahideen did with the Soviets. When the Soviets came in, there was a brief flurry of fighting, and then they just melted away and regrouped, bided their time, and then came back with a vengeance after the CIA and the Saudis started funding them.
Can all that be walked back after the number and degree of mistakes the U.S. has made? I don’t know. What I do know is that if the U.S. doesn’t find a way to convince its friends–meaning the Saudis and the Pakistanis–to stop supporting and funding the Taliban, that bunch of loonies will win, eventually.

Yesterday somewhere I saw this referred to as “masturgate” which, although a tad direct and gross really gets the point across…
has anyone verified Foley’s alcoholism?
Are we sure the parent’s were too embarresed to report or was there a little arm twisting going on.
It seems incredible to me that the republicans covered up so well, but left parents out of the loop.
They were loose cannons that could blow at any min. That was sloppy on their part.
Gotta keep a constant eye on the press. From today’s NY Times:
“Mr. Dinerstein said he and other Republicans intended to trumpet the story of Mel Reynolds, the former Democratic congressman from Chicago who was imprisoned for corruption and for having sex with an under-age campaign worker. Former President Bill Clinton pardoned Mr. Reynolds before he left office.”
Bill Clinton did not pardon Mel Reynolds…he commuted his sentence for bank fraud. See below. But the reporter never even considered that the assertion of a Bill Clinton pardon for a sex crime was pretty absurd on its face. She just repeated it without even looking it up.
=============================================
In August 1994, Reynolds was indicted for having sex with a 16-year-old campaign volunteer. Despite the charges, he continued his campaign and was re-elected in November 1994. Reynolds initially denied the charges, which he claimed were racially motivated. On August 22, 1995 he was convicted on 12 counts of sexual assault, obstruction of justice and solicitation of child pornography. He resigned his seat on October 1, 1995.
Reynolds was sentenced to five years in prison and expected to be released in 1998. However, in April 1997, he was convicted on 15 unrelated counts of bank fraud and lying to SEC investigators. These charges resulted in an additional sentence of 78 months in federal prison. Reynolds served all of his first sentence and served forty-two months in prison for the later charges. At that point, U.S. President Bill Clinton commuted the sentence for bank fraud. As a result, Reynolds was released from prison and served the remaining time in a half way house. [1][2]

Only mention of that, as I recall, is that Foley had never been seen drunk in public. It’s not exactly an issue, for a couple of reasons. First, it doesn’t excuse his failures to assume his in loco parentis obligations, and his abuse of those under his supervision–and rehab or no, if there were violations of law, that won’t stop prosecutors from taking action.
Second, Foley’s gone, he’s resigned, but his enablers are still scrambling for their jobs and their reputations. If they’re covering up their role in Foley’s continued predations, as it seems (from the speed with which their stories are changing), the focus ought to be on them–Reynolds, Shimkus, Denny the Hut and Boehner. Alcoholism doesn’t figure into it–it’s gone way past the point where that should even be a talking point. (!)

I just sent a note to the NYTimes public editor about this. Thanks for pointing it out.
uggh! (s t r e t c h)… a little coffee please! woke up to some congresscritter on CNN sayin’ the page program should be suspended because, in essense, them being there is just asking for trouble… the anchor flashed back, “are you saying we can’t trust Congress with our young people?!?”
good job…
oh, and good morning, all!

LOL
Nope. He’s too busy going negative on Lamont and then blaming Lamont for being negative. He’s too busy vacuming in hundreds of thousands of dollars from Republicans and lobbyists to bite the hand that feeds him.
Again, I wish the national and CT Dems would wake up and smell the coffee. What does it take for them to see reality?

TRex – I’m glad you feel safe enough to confide in us. We’ve got your back. It’s amazing how many people have had experiences similar to yours. You most certainly were not at fault. It’s the abuser’s MO to blame the victim.
The Foley mess is certainly representative of the dysfunctional way our country approaches such crimes against children or young adults. I thought this part of your post was particularly poignant:
“It is the Reich Wing Culture of Denial that is to blame here. It’s as I said last night, in an environment where secrecy and repression are the law, predators flourish and thrive, escaping detection because nobody wants to admit that there is a problem. The victims are too ashamed to talk about what happened to them. Parents hush it up rather than risk the embarrassment. And then the cycle repeats itself.”
TRex – a hug to you… I’m always amazed at how many of us have been abused as children – the sheer numbers and percentages are enormous… I can hardly fathom it… the costs of it personally are staggering… (shakes head sadly).
and yes, all the news coverage of Foley is setting each and every one of us off.
Good morning, OC.
Headed out to work. You folx have a GOOD day.
Way EPU, TRex, but as it happened I was one refresh away from seeing your comment before I went to bed last night, and didn’t catch it until this morning. In case you end up reading this far, I just wanted to say that we’re happy to be here for you. This is such a great community, and you’re such an important part of it.
TRex, thanks for your front page post, your candor in your comment about your own experience downthread, and especially for taking your anger and using it as fuel for something positive.
TRex, I love your healthy doses of snark, but I gotta take issue with one point here – Malkin. Yeah, I know, it pains me to say it, too, but I flipped through right-blogsylvania after the Foley scandal to see exactly what you were expecting – the spin, denials, blame and equivocation festival that I was sure was already well underway. And, in the main, I was not disappointed. Drudge, the PowerTools, many of the usual suspects were already in full damage-control mode.
But not Malkin.
Oh, don’t get me wrong, I think she’s a wingnut of the highest order, and no stranger to ethical lapses herself, such as when she published the personal information of those 20-year old UCSC students. But she’s also the mother of two small-ish children. And, as such, she understood this one on a level that went beyond partisanship. If you haven’t already, read THIS. Here’s the money quote(s):
And, if I may borrow a line from Ms. Malkin, there is a time and place for attacking (with plenty-’o’-justification) Ms. Malkin for her many sins. But this time, you can leave her off the list of usual suspects in the rogues gallery.
Just sayin’.
Pot calling the kettle black – from the WaPo
In addition to expressing his support for Hastert, Boehner also wrote in his letter to the editor that the timing of the allegations against Foley was odd.
“We also need to know why these messages surfaced only last week, on the final day of legislative business before the November elections,” the House majority leader wrote.
“If this evidence was withheld for political purposes, one can only speculate as to how many additional children may have been endangered before this information was finally revealed,” he wrote.
These guys really are completely insane!
